Great Disney remake. Heavy on the camp, and incorporates elements of the Asian filmmaking tradition of entertainingly overdone fighting/drama.

The characters could have been done better and maybe keeping some of the non human characters like cricket/dragon would have been a good idea. I get that people who liked the music will be unhappy with this version, but it was a solid 7 for me. Expand

Key scenes are missing that remove much of the drama and importance in a film that somehow takes longer to tell less of the story than the animated version.
Despite this it is watchable, mainly for the cast who I won't fault and the score.

Looking at the title,Saw 2020's 'Mulan' as a massive Disney fan. Although their recent live action offerings are very mixed and none are as good as the originals, many of their animated films are fine examples of how to do animation right. Looking at the title, the advertising and that seeing it was made by Disney, it is very easy to think that this is another one of the live action remakes and it is easy why it has been critiqued as one. Part of me was really psyched being somebody who loves the 1998 film, but also worried when seeing the hate for the film and for the lead actress.

When seeing 'Mulan', it didn't actually strike me as a live action remake and doesn't have an awful lot of Disney in sight. Other than the title and references to the score of the 1998 film embedded in this one. Instead to me it came over as more another version of the character and her story, and one more serious and less family friendly, so directly comparing the two films didn't strike me as right. While the disappointment that is expressed is understandable, as there are big flaws to be found and it definitely does not have the same amount of charm, heart and thrills as the 1998 film, to me 'Mulan' was not that bad and was not deserving of the extreme backlash before it was even released. Seeing as Yifei Liu's personal views had/have nothing to do with Disney or the film crew.

'Mulan' is not perfect. Do agree with those that say that a lot of the dialogue is pretty bad, with a tendency to sound stilted, especially in the cringe-worthy and very out of place attempts at sporadic humour with the troops, and go too heavy on emphasising the characters' values. Loyal, brave and true agreed did not need to be emphasised so much, the point was made quite quickly. There are things in the plot that sounded oddly intriguing on paper, but done too little with. Especially with the phoenix, which doesn't really add anything.

Both Xianniang and Bori Khan felt like underdeveloped characters. The former comes off better as she is suitably mysterious and alluring, but her motives are pretty confused later on (with it being not clear what side she was on), she is pretty much a come and go plot device and her final scene felt very rushed. Bori Khan has an intimidating look but is underused and his motivation is pretty much the only thing that is learnt about him. Didn't like how easily defeated he was and how clumsy the scene looked. In general the characters could have done with more depth, Mulan and Zhou are the ones that come closest, and the film could have done with more soul.

However, 'Mulan' does look great, especially striking in the truly exquisite historical visuals and the at its best majestic scenery. There is a lot of colour and atmosphere in the photography, which was clearly inspired by the likes of Zhang Yimou, and the costumes do catch the eye. The CGI didn't seem too excessive and didn't look jarringly cheap either. Harry Gregson-Williams' score is stirring and also has a sumptuous emotional core, also enjoyed hearing references to the music from the 1998 film. Niki Caro on the most part directs with confidence.

Personally really was impressed by the beautifully choreographed and dynamically photographed action. When it needed to be tense it was, when it needed to be particularly athletic it was and when it needed to excite it did. Especially the big battle and the avalanche. It was easy to feel the strength, pain and perseverance needed to get through all that training, only the final showdown came over as ridiculous. The story was not perfect but it engaged enough, intrigued with the cultural aspects and inspired thanks to Mulan still being a strong character (though she doesn't grow as much or go on a character journey as much as the animated Mulan, if to briefly compare). Although the father-daughter reunion was more emotionally powerful previously, it is still quite moving in a subtle way here.

Moreover, the acting wasn't bad at all to me. Liu is a confident lead, bringing authority and vulnerability to Mulan that was ideal for this ideal heroine. Donnie Yen and Jet Li are strong authority figures and Jason Scott Lee does inject some menace into his underdeveloped role. Tzi Ma's performance is very telling in its nuance, more than once not even saying a word. Li Gong looks wonderful in the film and is both deceptively alluring and mysterious, despite the character herself is not meaty Gong's acting is quite complex.

In conclusion, prepared myself to hate it but quite liked it while finding it very flawed. 6/10

With extreme ease I can say that Mulan is to this day the most ambitious film of all the films that Disney has remade in live action.

The scale, staging, colors, details and setting easily put it on a higher level.
The trailers already showed some of it but seeing it in the finished film lets you appreciate the attention to detail in a better way.

Speaking about the film, I can say that I really enjoyed the first part, with the elements it took from the animated film and because it keeps a nice pace that feels pleasant and fun.

However, once the middle of the film is over and on its way to the third act, the film loses its compass, and when I say that, it's not that it becomes a bad film but that it becomes somewhat cartoonish.
Perhaps the weight of staying true to the ease with which things get fixed up in an animated film.

The way she accepts her destiny, the way she accepts that she's a woman in the Imperial army, that feels a bit forced because of the way the film pushes that plot development so quickly.
The final course, the final battle, that personality twist of one of the villains, it feels forced.
I didn't like that it doesn't feel organic, that frustrated me a lot.

Without a doubt, it's a fantasy story and also this never stops being a Disney film but that's a problem by itself because in the conflict Disney bets on the easy show, the Marvel kinda show, so it lost points in my eyes for it.

Liu Yifei does a good job, although I feel like they didn't give her much to work with. I feel like the script didn't give her much to explore with the character and it's a shame.
The film is totally hers, there's no doubt about that because of the rest of the cast frankly all are merely supportive, none leaves an impression with the exception of Donnie Yen and that's me being benevolent. I mean she's not a great actress, but anyway I feel the film didn't allow her to explore the character in the best way, although I blame this more on the script than on her because it's clear that she did take the role seriously and worked with what it was provided. I do think it was a sad thing to see the film ending up on Disney +, both for what it means for movie theaters and for the fact that it diminishes the film in a huge way.
Don't forget, this is a 200 million dollars blockbuster, and I honestly, would've loved to see it on theaters but today, beyond the cost of renting it, ending up in the service that way, makes it feel disposable.

About the changes between the animated film and this one, to tell you the truth, some of the complaints seems ridiculous to me, mainly because people has to understand something: This is supposed to be different, if you really want to see the exact the same thing, then go watch the animated one. Of the rest I can only reaffirm that I think that of all the live action films that Disney has released of its animated classics, this is the one that I've enjoyed the most.
Because the truth is that until now, none of them has made me say: '' Oh wow, it was wonderful. '' And this one didn't do it either, but I think it's the one that completed the circle in a more satisfactory way despite its defects, and maybe when the time comes, I will add it to my collection.

And if you're **** about the price. Well, sucks to be poor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Soy mujer y me menosprecian.

If you want to support HK, go to social media not a movie rating website I think most Disney movie are falling into a serious problem about "creating strong female characters".(star wars, frozen, captain marvel, etc)
I'd loved to see female characters pop up on the big screen, however not Disney's formula. All four movie (mulan, star wars, frozen, captain marvel) has its main character "gifted" with power, however, there is always a evil male character telling them they needs to be "that good girl" in their thoughts. Then at certain point, the fema character realized she needs no one and unleashed the inner power. The problem here is, there is no reason for them to change, and since they are "gifted", they can suddenly become super powered like turning on a switch, which makes the story mary sue.

How our kids can relate on such story, when the movie is trying to tell them you can only be a hero when you are gifted.

The original mulan is a very good movie.

The Art Direction and soundtrack is incredible, and I think, visually, this film stands on it's own merits. But everything else is trite at best and annoyingly cliche at worst. The symbolism in some scenes is so one the nose at times, I rolled my eyes whenever that happens. Mulan's conflict isn't protecting her family by taking her father's place in the army, now it's "I need to accept myself as I am, and not hide behind the Identity of a man to be viewed as strong." I found it jarring to constantly see how she has constant power over others, and not having any weakness other than her own lack of confidence being the only obstacle in her way in the film. I will say now, It's really NOT a terrible movie, but the lack of conflict and reliance on western belief systems feel less like Mulan from the book or the Movie. Expand

It's too slow paced, the characters are unengaging, some questionable directing choices were made, and there are some editing hiccups here and there if you care to notice them. I fell asleep in the middle of the movie, and that is a very bad sign considering I've stayed wide awake for 3-hour epics like Lord of the Rings and The Avengers. It's a shame the movie isn't a musical like the animated version, because it would've filled in the gaps much better in a movie that otherwise feels way too long. There's a few interesting scenes here and there, but it's not enough to hold the movie up from its flaws. As for the ridiculous $30 on top of a subscription, that alone would warrant this movie to be a 3 or below. But I want to be fair and judge the movie for what it is and not the bad corporate decisions behind it. Unfortunately it's still an unremarkable movie. Expand

This movie just wasn't necessary. It happened but it didn't need to. Everything was kind of blah and it didn't really have any heart to it.
The only good thing was the cinematography, which looked really nice. It was fine enough to sit through once or half-watch but I wouldn't want to do that again.
I appreciated that it was set in China with all Chinese actors it it was also annoying that they spoke English. Like… you almost had it.
Also, that makes it clear that it was just an attempt to make more money. The story of Mulan is always great so the remake wasn't really necessary since it's the same plot. All the signs point towards cash grab.
Also, the special effects were really bad and just didn't seem to fit.

The cinematography is beautiful, no doubt.
The soundtrack is good as well, albeit without thinking about the musical aspect of the 1998 animation.

The bad:
By trying to please everyone, the director has efficiently managed to create a movie which feels distinctly flat, without any heart or emotional connection to the characters on screen.
The screenwriters misspelled "Mongolians" as well (they didn't, but it's just so damn stupid).

There is no real feeling of impending doom like in the 1998 animation, and the dark scenes to establish the ruthlessness of the Khan, are gone.

With the inclusion of "Chi" they have also effectively removed the fundamental message of the whole tale. Mulan is just the best at everything because reasons, it's weird.

The character display some nonsensical reasoning as well, which I won't spoil, but holy damn, there are some encounters which are just straight up badly written.

In summation:
The movie is questionably written, without any real heart, and feels like the 1998 animation, if the animation had had a lobotomy.

I disliked giving the hero Ki powers. The whole point of the story is a normal girl worked hard, was brave and clever, etc. Instead now she’s a superhero? Weird choice that undermines the character, plot and theme of the whole narrative. The original is far more enjoyable. Expand

we have all the A-star Chinese movies actors but none of them could save this horrible disneyfied show. why must they write scripts for kids? so condescending.... don't they know by now kids are way smarter and sophisticated. don't insult them with pretense of filial piety. they know that's the premise of the whole mulan legend.
why must the real stuff in the middle by shortened to make way for the mushy last part. give me a break, please.

It was decent and some parts where genuinely enjoyable. However, unfortunately, I think it has far more negatives going for it than positives I’m afraid (especially since my 6-year-old was so excited to watch it, but wound up walking away in the first 10 minutes).

To start, this new "Mulan" is an entirely different story from the 1998 Disney animated classic or even the 6th Century Ballad of Mulan. Mulan was a heroic story of a young girl in Ancient China who, in order to bring honor and pride to her family, risked death and torture to keep her father safe. Taking her father's place in the war to save his life. She overcame obstacles that men, bigger and stronger then she could not. It never overshadowed or undermined men. It was a story of leadership, and putting the needs of others before your own. A story of doing the right thing, no matter the personal cost. In the end she tries to offer to her father the treasures she got from the emperor as gift to bring honor to their family only to find out that she herself was more precious to him than anything else. All while having a positive message about both sexes doing what was needed to be done. It’s a story beloved by people of all ages and backgrounds. 2020's Mulan is more of a reimagined historical documentary than an actual Disney live-action adaptation. It's lost the magic that made it Disney. No heartfelt positive message. No comedy. No light-hearted interactions. No songs. No animal sidekicks. No Bisexual Le Shang. It's just a story about a historical Chinese figure, turned Mary Sue, being exceedingly monotone, uptight, and strict throughout a war who will fulfill her duty and "bring honor to us all” (China) by being a one-woman wrecking ball. It's obvious the movie tries exceedingly hard to be “realistic” in multiple aspects of the film. However, this Mulan was born with incredible Chi and godly natural talent and abilities, was a complete badbutt from the start, the fact that there is magic and sorcery in the film, and unnatural acrobatics that would absolutely require assisted rigging say otherwise. Especially since the Green Screen and CGI in this film are painfully obvious. Other than that, the movie tends to be slow-moving with dry and stale interactions from the cast. There are many awkward interactions that feel out of place.

Lastly, I have to mention all of the negative publicity and acts behind this film and during production of it. Especially the human rights crimes that were taking place in Xinjiang were video footage of hundreds of Uighur prisoners were blindfolded, shackled, and shoved into busses headed for internment camps. The actress portraying Mulan, Yifei Liu, has been very public about siding against freedom and the people of Hong Kong by supporting the Hong Kong Police cracking down on protests. In the final credits of the film, Disney offers “special thanks” to eight government entities in Xinjiang where several “re-education” camps have been documented. The film also expresses thanks to the “Publicity Department of CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region Committee,” the Chinese Communist Party’s Propaganda Department in Xinjiang. Finally, just as a last show of toxicity surrounding this film, the film crew have allegedly filed a complaint regarding the films diversity issues and for being forced to take DNA tests to prove their "Asianness" because there have been complaints that the film is too "White" despite having an all-Asian cast. *Sighs*…Sorry, but Disney absolutely missed the mark. I don't think I'll be seeing this one again and I will be informing the rest of my family and friends about it. 2020’s Mulan looks like it’s been turned into a glorified propaganda piece for China. #Disney #WaltDisneyStudios #Mulan #BoycottMulan #Dishonor

But this is a film which many good people worked hard on. So if we ignore the fact...that an evil regime will benefit from this film and if we ignore the fact that the lead is infamous for her active support of the Hong Kong democracy crack down by mainland China and if we ignore that this film was actually filmed next to concentration camps and used slave labour only to actually thank the Chinese officials in charge of that well documented genocide etc...if we ignore all that ...what about the film? Well the film is not mulan as we know it. Its not much like the poem and it's even less like the cartoon. Its like ...star wars with the force called chi and some Chinese state propaganda thrown in for good measure. The Dragon is gone too. Apparently Chinese audiences didn't like it but western Americans loved it...So ofcourse China won. I guess the live action Shrek remake will also cut eddie Murphy and donkey Because apparently the chinese regime doesnt like donkeys...or winnie the pooh. The film is average as a film. Its no longer about coming of age or work hard and get good or anything to do with women's plight in China...which under the 1 child rule has been pretty bleak. Its more about being born the right type of Chinese person...So again very Xi JingPing rhetoric and reminiscence of Nazi Germany superman philosophy. Outside of that it looks lovely and sounds fine. Just very average overall and not really for kids. Not sure who this is for except China but apparently China isn't a fan due to the issues it has brought to light in our uncensored free press. In China there has been a media black out. So i found myself asking was it really worth it Disney ? No is the simple answer. This is a shameless greedy cash grab which has failed and cost reputations as well as lives. As a fan of mulan I'm gutted but in 2020...What more can we expect ? We should expect more than thanking Chinese nazis imo but then maybe I'm out of touch. C - Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Niki Caro simply destroyed the issues of the original Mulan movie. Attempting to rewrite the story was praiseworthy but man, there are some subjects and scenes you just can't miss. According to the huge feminism movement our societies are dealing with, the Mulan movie should have been the perfect place to transmit deep messages and to develop strong points of view. Instead of this we face a Mulan endowed with supernatural powers (the still unexplained Chi thing), hesitating to reveal them or not. The movie kind of try to address the problem of omnipresence of honour in men living in Medieval China but until the end the father of Mulan (who represents it) stands his ground and eventually never questions things the way they deeply are. Instead of this we receive a cold and superficial message about the importance of familiy. Nothing in the status of any woman in the movie changed from the beginning to the end. When all this thing ends you feel like you wasted your time for some childish random movie without any second lecture as an adult. The heroin is impossible to understand, the action scenes are jerky and unepic, there is an unexplained presece of some meaningless phenix, characters are just caricatures of themselves, and above everything feminity is a totally muted subject. A good point is that the landscapes are wonderful. Still a mess. Expand

I find it hard to imagine anyone who can relate to a magical person born with extraordinary unearthly talent far superior than their peers, whos main struggle is to just use their potential. Not learning to get better, not working or training, but to not hold back their physical prowess. This internal struggle of a demigod is sadly not even that well executed of a journey. if this being is so powerful why does another equally powerful shapeshifter need to sacrifice themselves against a measly arrow. makes no sense. donnie yen's character was also the only one who looked like they could actually fight. I was so excited and hopeful after seeing the trailer, but this lacks the spirit and emotion that was so integral to the animated version. ex the decision to take the place of her father was such a powerful moment in the original, but in the modern remake it just happens. so many things "just happen" for the sake of happening. Had some emotional moments, but this came over more like a cheesy cheap remake of an old tale rather than living up to the opportunity that Mulan could have provided to girls like it did for so many in the 90s kicking off the girl power movement.

The acting was terrible all around and horribly edited. If you want to sum up the movie in one scene, watch the emperor scene right after he gets saved and the ropes get undone by Mulan (close to the end).

So much potential, a real shame. I’ll stick with the classics.

CON: poor Chinese cultural understanding, action sequences draw from wuxia but fail to do it well, editing is choppy and fails to build any tension or emotional impact, dialogue feels translated directly from Chinese and is both simple and lacks complexity. This film feels ultimately like a potshot by Hollywood productions at a Chinese movie. They tried really hard to make this appealing to a Chinese movie goer and honestly, missed this mark completely. Disney seems to have missed the development of Chinese cinema in the last 20 years. Taste in 'costume dramas' has developed a lot and there are much higher standards in both the production and acting. Chinese cinema now has done every part of Mulan 2020 did, but far better. Removing the distinctly American parts of the original exposes the flaws of this movie and magnifies it to who are more familiar with the material. Despite the complaints about the cartoon Mulan, the cartoon Mulan is somehow far more genuine in it's representation by being true to the American Chinese experience. The irony is the remake poisons it's own Qi by not being true to itself in either the cultural origins or the Disney predecessor. Expand

Totally disappointed by the movie. It lacks the depth and emotional variety of the original, and comes up as dry and flat. It lacks the depth and emotional variety of the original, and comes up as dry and flat. Not anything special in the background music except a copy of the original songs. No emotional changes, no transition from village life to home atmosphere, no intensity. I can only excuse these decisions given that in the asian culture it is not polite to express intense emotions. However they could've found a balance. Mulan's personality has dramatically changed between the two movies, from cheerful, kind, courageous, determined and honest to silent, non expressive, a bit proud and too weak. In the original, she fought hard to get strong both physically and mentally. She never hid her character. In this version, she is struggling until she discovers her "chi" which magically boosts everything from her fighting skills to the team's full acceptance with almost no effort at all. It's cringe, cause you can't see a smooth/ logical transition in the soldiers' feelings towards her, they just go from "you brought shame upon your family" straight to "You are a warrior, you will lead us". There is no inner struggling, no overcoming of their prejudices, no final giving in to their gut and faith in her. It doesn't make sense that a cartoon covers all these aspects of human nature and the actual film just overrides them all. The actress is ok, although I don't see the impulsion, innocence, humility and kindness found in the original. They seem forced and don't flow naturally out of her. There is more than one scene that I've caught her being a bit too proud and snob about her acomplishments. There are many other things I would like to refer to, but these are the most obvious to me. Generally I expected a lot more. re. Expand

Remaking the original would have been much more pleasing. This movie seems rushed and full of missing story plots.

Was expecting more but was completely left wanting. The cinematics were good but the story and cohesion were lacking. I expected more for my money and was disappointed. I watched the original animation shortly after and much preferred it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is full dull and simple characters! As a result Mulan is the only relevant character. They worried so much about making a realistic film that they removed Mushu... but included unrealistic martial arts scenes, a witch and a fénix. By far the worst one Expand

The original was full of life and spirit, while this film goes for a gritty and rather soulless approach, which is not what audiences in America asked for. Maybe Chinese audiences did (since this film was clearly made to pander to them), but even then from what I heard they loved the songs, Li Shang, and Mushu too, who are both absent in this film. I appreciate Disney trying to actually make notable changes to its remakes for once, but this is just a boring slog of a movie that lacks any major enjoyment. Expand

They took as story about a woman working hard to achieve her goals while the whole world is against her, into a woman born with powers and everyone just treats her like she's special.
Why work hard when you can be born with magic right?
oh and don't expect to see fan favorites like Mushu. Apparently Disney wanted this to be a grim and boring movie with 0 comedy.
Stop doing live action remakes if you're just going to make sh** worse.

No joke this movie is so bad even pirates are staying away from it.

Underwhelming
Full of contrived cliches
The Disneyfication ruins what could have been a great Kung Fu'esq movie
Decent cinematography and choreography watered down for what the execs think is the target demographic, of which I am not a part of.

In the original Mulan made the heroes journey of self-discovery as she develops and overcome the odds by determination, will power and working harder than anyone else. Here there is nothing as she is a Mary Sue or close to it. Even more they removed Mushu. You read that correctly. Mushu was a highlight of the original and it is beyond my imagination how they thought this could be a good idea or well received. They say they wanted appeal more to the Chinese audience. The characters are overall more diluted and inferior to the original. I don't blame the actors here because it is the fault of the script and decisions by the production company. This is also true for director Niki Caro. My respect for what she did here with this crippling limitations for character development and storytelling. I must also mention the CGI. It is also strangely unpolished and sticks out. The soundtrack is O.K. and fight scenes are good. The scenery and looks are a bit strange and it is hard to describe. A YouTube reviewer said it looked like a Bollywood movie where they took out everything that makes a Bollywood movie great (Singing, joy, emotions, etc.). Again this is strangely a fitting description. However my main summary would be that the movie was boring and you will often look on your **** Overall this is a movie that was ruined by corporate decisions and makes you to want to rewatch the original to remove the bad taste in your mouth. I am not sure if I would recognize it as remake of the original if I did not know it. I subtract 2 points for the cash grab on Disney+. Expand

Boring and soulless. Giving a message that you have to have extraordinary genes and not hardwork to become something. Totally unfunny too. Had to watch Alladin after to balance it out.

The worst sin is that they added superhero chi because market survey says people want to be special and not earn things through hard work like in the original.
Really the sins are of three types:
PC stuff, like removing romance with superior officer
China appeasing
general poor writing (stupid villain: "we're the same". "no"
"yes") and lazy effects like removing the pole scene for mountain scene just for lack of stunt actor

Basically, the only reason this review has any points is that there is continuity in sense, and there is something resembling an instruction like the beginning middle, and end. Other than that I would recommend not watching this movie to anyone.
For starters, people who liked the original Mulan should go watch the original. If you like kung fu movies go watch something else.
By itself, this movie has a bunch of stuff that is bad. The main actress plays Mulan as flat and blank. Mulan's character has non-sensical motivations that aren't consistent. One of the villain's character's motivation doesn't make any sense. And then the film removed all the redeeming qualities from the original movie. Many of the elements of the movie are contradictory, and the supporting is forgettable.

My recommendation: watch the original movie or go watch kung fu movies, but don't waste your time on this movie.

I could understand most of these changes, but they just don't work. The whole war aspect was executed poorly, and Mulan's character development was non-existent. Instead of breaking through barriers and proving self-worth, this Mulan is supernatural kung fu, Avengers-style superhero - no struggle in overcoming yourself, bettering other men, or using clever strategies.
This movie is flawed on so many levels that I will not have enough space to describe it all. Only redeeming quality of this film is its cinematography - the film looks absolutely stunning.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MILD SPOILERS:

This version of Mulan makes her a Mary Sue. She is born with a huge reservoir of chi, which makes her more powerful than everyone else. She didn't work for it, she didn't do anything to deserve it. She was just born with it. In the animation, she actually makes up for her lack of physical strength by outsmarting everyone else. Not here. Here, she's just a child prodigy. Just because she takes part in the training doesn't mean she needs it. She's actually suppressing her power, Elsa style.

Apart from that, the movie has glaring editing amateurish mistakes. One moment she's holding the sword, the next she's already armored up and striding out of her village, any emotional charge or dramatic tension is gone from this scene compared to the original animation. In another part, Mulan wants to find higher ground to fight the enemies, she mounts her horse, and the very next frame she's already behind a rock shooting arrows! It feels like the movie was butchered in the editing room.

They also stripped down any comic relief whatsoever. No Mushu, no jokes, even granny had to go. The movie takes itself too seriously to the point where it becomes dull. The actor playing Mulan has the acting range of a wood plank. The CGI is sometimes OK and sometimes hideous.

There's nothing epic about the fights like it was promised. We've seen wire-fu done a lot better in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and in House of Flying Daggers, and even in The Matrix. There are no epic scale battle scenes.

This movie is inferior to every other version of Mulan out there, including and especially to the animation of 1998.

It's not a terrible movie, mind you. But it's definitely NOT worth the 30 bucks. And I have no wish to watch it again. One time was more than enough. This movie is in fact scaled-down in every sense. There's magic (or chi) but it's not magical. The fights seem to be actually scaled down from the animation, fewer people, less epic, huge empty fields. Even the Imperial City has no citizens. Empty streets everywhere. We never get to connect with the other characters and we do not care for them. Mulan's village is smaller. The war camp is smaller. The pacing feels rushed. It's amazing that with all the songs taking up screen time and about 30 minutes less, the original amination felt a lot more fleshed out and had better pacing.

Disney sacrificed everything that made this movie special in order to appeal to the Chinese audience. I hope it pays out to them. This movie is just the latest disappointment in a series of unnecessary remakes. It is certainly not worth 30 dollars to watch.
