It seems Marvel is scrapping the barrel for more superhero’s to take the stage, but anyways. Let’s get into it.
So first of all, the best thing about this film is probably its soundtrack. Thanks to the most relatable character, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), we get a handful of music that’s pre-90’s. The first example of this is in the opening credits sequence, which is fantastic. It’s fun and something never really seen in a Marvel film before. Seeing as how this film is like a cousin to Marvel’s The Avengers it focuses on a group of hero’s and not just one. However, unlike Avengers, which had a film previously released to explore each individual character, this film has to use some of its runtime to introduce each of the five characters right off the bat. Luckily this doesn’t happen too quickly, and it’s set up so the characters don’t like each other at first, which is a good way to keep us interested in how they develop a relationship with one another. Although I will say that the opening scene is depressing as hell, and it goes from realism to comic book feel too quickly. But overall, this film starts out kicking ass. It’s different, the characters are unique and interesting, and they get a really nice setup. Unfortunately as the movie goes on it starts to deflate slightly.
The biggest problem this movie has, despite its excellent take on character development, is its villains. The problem, simply put, is that they’re boring as **** Seriously. They have no character development. As far as I remember, the main characters don’t even talk to Ronin (Lee Pace) until an hour into the movie, and even then they barley have any conflict with him. The only person who has a real beef with this guy was Drax (Dave Batista) and even then it was too cliché and forced. In fact, Drax is probably the least developed and intriguing character of the five Guardians. Even Groot (Vin Diesel) is a more interesting character, mostly because he’s the sidekick to Rocket (Bradley Cooper), who is absolutely badass. Rocket and Groot practically resemble Han Solo and Chewbacca. In fact, they are Han Solo and Chewbacca. The clues are there. Look for them. In fact, both Peter Quill and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) have a rouge/Han Solo feel to them. At first they’re just trying to get what will make themselves happy, but then they grow beyond that. The relationship among the main characters develops really well as the movie goes on. It’s the villains that need more work. Don’t even get me started on Thanos (Josh Brolin). Is it even worth mentioning the actors name? The whole Macguffin (the thing that keeps the story going) was poorly explained as well. In this case, it’s the orb. It’s vaguely explained to be this all-powerful device which can unleash inconceivable powers, even though it’s apparent that only certain people can control it, one of those being Ronin. The conflict is that he wants to use it to destroy the republic of Xandar, which is implied to be like the capital of the galaxy, but there is no explanation of why. You know, what his beef is with Xandar, what their history is, and why he’s so keen on destroying them. Yeah, anyone who has read the comics doesn’t really need an explanation, and will probably fangasm over this film more, but what matters is the film as a film on its own. It’s not just made for fans who were previously familiar with Guardians of the Galaxy.
Overall, this is definitely one of Marvel’s finest films in years. If you liked Avengers, then this is definitely your forte. The main characters are each unique and interesting in their own way and are really what make this film. And they should be. After all, they’re the Guardians of the Galaxy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Extremely shallow adaptation of Dan Abnett Gotg. Helmed by Scooby Doo director under the uncompromising guidance of Kevin Feige. This movie is nothing more than a bunch of sitcom skits strung together by a forgettable plot involving another cosmic item. Ronan is as forgettable as the Dark Elf guy from thor 2. The final battle that ends with a dance number and human/oid chain holding of hands is just the kind of crappy stupid dreck that's slowly been working its way into the Marvel phase 2 movies. There are no real stakes or feeling of danger as everything is wrapped neatly for the convenience of the stupid masses of fanboys who will flock to this movie and eagerly swallow whatever Marvel Studios sees fit to **** out nowadays. Great story, great transition from the comics to the movie, great acting, good cast and outstanding soundtrack, Guardians of the Galaxy is a 9/10 movie for being an unknown comic books that came to the theathers respectfully, it has some nice sort of comedy, some nice and bizarre characters and it comes with a distrust, a distrust that a bizarre group of a 2 thiefs, one tree, one servant and one strong men, but this distrust is surprisingly broken when in the end you realize that they actually deal with the situation, this is the kind of surprise that we don't see that usual in actual days movies, just outstanding.

For those who read the original stories in Marvel comics, this is a pretty good visualisation. But most people will not care about the source material one way or the other, and will just see yet another Marvel movie epic that is intertwined with the other Marvel epics of late. Quite a lot of wit is on display, and the musical jokes are easy to take as well. And hopefully we have now seen the last comic book movie for a while where the plot hinges on bringing an enormous spaceship down just before there is some kind of mass extinction. Bring on Thanos! I was very doubtful when entering the cinema. But this is actually a very good film. It has some obvious "american superheroes" clichés that are highly boring, but not too much, and Groot saves it all.

However, to my surprise it turned out to be a really fun movie in the same light and humor as The Avengers. Great action and effects throughout. Chris Pratt is really funny and great to watch as Starlord, Zoe Saldana also does really well. However, the two people who steal the show are Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper who voice Groot and Rocket respectively. Overall, this film is all around great and just plain entertaining from start to finish. And just like any other Marvel film, stick around for a post-credits scene. Expand

The biggest problem with this movie is that it couldn't really decide what it wanted to be, so it didn't wind up as much of anything. It wasn't funny enough to be a real comedy, or exciting enough to be an action film, or smart enough to be a drama, etc. etc. Another issue was that the two computer rendered characters - Rocket Racoon and Groot - stole every scene from the bland/irritating human ones, especially given a highly underwhelming performance by the actors. Last but not least the movie is incessantly peppered with songs that are highly dependent on taste - if you liked them then they probably picked up the film. If you didn't then it just made it all the more tiresome. Ultimately I wouldn't recommend Guardians of the Galaxy, though I suppose it might be okay for a Tuesday showing at a cheap theater. Expand

Behold the era wherein Marvel can't do anything wrong. It even **** gold now! True story! ‪Gunn‬'s a super-rad director planted in the perfect shoes by Marvel and boy does he deliver! By far the boldest move, the finest venture in the comic-turned-into-a-movie department and the decision to bring Gunn to the front page couldn't have been more perfect! ‪ DarkAster‬: The superb depiction of the badass floating frigging gigantic warship would make you forget any spaceship stereotype you ever had! Things are getting artistic! ‪ Thanos‬: All hail the mighty Thanos! Bow down to the soon-to-be-God master of villainy! Though he braces us with a cameo we still get the picture of the Assembling of the Infinity Stones and an even bigger picture of the oncoming war and the impending chaos! ‪ Pratt‬ is adorable with his wits and awesome humor doing justice to "Star-Lord" while ‪Rooker‬ breathes life into ‪Yondu‬, with his accent and flair he makes the Ravager fun to watch and he is extremely lethal yet badass with the arrow! Watch out for that bit! ‪

Del Toro‬ permeates Collector with pizazz yet again, whilst ‪Lee Pace‬ strives to make ‪Ronan‬ a grim intimidating character however Marvel still ends up making him another passable villain that might disappear as a hungry-for-desolation and power lout. We might cherish him as the Kree-ian who dared defy Thanos though!

‎Rocket‬: Words fail to describe this guardian. He's the life of the group and a true hero just with a filthy mouth. His pairing with ‪ Groot‬ is kickass! whilst Groot's our ‪Hodor‬ in disguise! He is packed with surprises! Not that Vin Diesel had much to say anything about it (you see what I did there?) ‎Gamora‬ the unfortunate adoption was good with the team. ‎Saldana‬ plays it fine. Bautista‬ is brilliant as the dumb ‪Drax‬ who's bent on revenge and getting his ass kicked and Stan‬! Go get a room man!

If you can't somehow watch this movie, just stop existing! :P

It is a worthwhile praise for actors to followup on a comedic relief it is a short fun fling.
Yet if there was a trend, the trend is to get in bed, jerk it off in the next 5 minutes, and call it sex.
We've all seen it, why bother with a newborn bastard.

In all, "summer blockbuster 2014", give it two extra stars and call it commercial success.

This is a great action film that loosely ties itself to the other Marvel films (Avengers) with several nods.

I enjoyed it as a sci-fi film that really didn't feel very "super hero" to me so much as a nicely compiled homage to Firefly, Farscape and even some 1970s Buck Rogers.

I highly recommend this to anyone that is a fan of sci-fi cinema (even if they're growing tired of superheroes). The dialogue is smart, the cinematography is top-notch and the characters are well-defined and likable (Bradley Cooper's Rocket Raccoon is among my favourites).

It is the best comic book movie of the year, maybe only a little above of Days of Future Past and The Winter Soldier. Marvel did take advantage of the little fame that the Guardians of the Galaxy had as a hero team, but also make them seem as a group of all time favorite characters. The visual effects are excellent, the casting was well-chosen and the soundtrack is a perfect combination of 80's songs that can easily be a short compilation album of the decade.

Chris Pratt is great as womanizer and sarcastic, Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana develops well as the serious killer Gamora, Dave Bautista is outstanding as the fugitive Drax the Destroyer and Bradley Cooper was the perfect choice as the voice of the funny and witted Rocket Raccoon.

The story has charisma, action and very funny moments that as a whole make an entertaining and very interesting film. Without mentioning its hints of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Chronologically perfect, each scene and act plays at the exact time, with a perfect conexion, I wasn't expecting that kind of chronology from a superhero movie, but yes, I found it. Guardians of the Galaxy is funny, unpredicable, extraodinary and epic from the first begining to the great end, you'll never believe in a bunch of dummies, but you should, how they pass through situations is totally unpredicable, but they always pass.

This sense of "those bunch of weak guys will never defeat the most strongest person in the galaxy" is well used in all the movie, which gives you the confidence that maybe you'll need for a possible sequence. This nonsense group of a ferret, a tree, a silly but very strong men, a girl and a thief makes a connection with who's watching that is unbelievable, you start to like each one of this group, a nice connection that a lot of serious movie will never make.

The Super Hero Movie Craze lately shows superheros as they would occur in our reality now. Everything can be explained. So, maybe I just haven't accepted that all alien life forms are fluent English speakers (I know, it's a movie, but at least explain it). But Rocket and Groot make the movie for me. And Dave Batista makes for a really good Drax. Gamora, I wasn't so sure of. Being one of the fieriest warriors in the Universe wasn't really put across. But, a thoroughly enjoyable movie nonetheless! It defines the meaning of space adventure and sets the standard of it too. WIth a mix of epic action scenes that go along with the unique soundtrack that is packed with nostalgic 70s songs, this isn't your typical heroes on space movie. There is no real leader of the Guardians, there is no side-kick either, they all play their part and work well as a team to reach their goal. Even Groot, who some see as comic relief, has a major role in the movie. Along with the dazzlingly realistic CGI that is a huge step for the industry, many up close scenes of creatures show their pores and wrinkles, even follicles of hair. There isn't much bad to say about this film apart from the fact that it's a shame that it goes by so quickly because of how action packed and intense it is. Expand

It's a zany but marvelous take on an unknown comic book (At least until now). The characters are funny, quirky as hell, and also have strong heart to them. Initially, I thought the humor would weigh the movie down at some point. However, it never relinquishes it's zany feel, which not only feels fresh to the story but doesn't feel forced. It's really the only marvel movie that has used tons of humor to its advantage and makes it truly special. Overall, it's a hilarious fun time at the movies. I give this an A! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to admit. I had very high expectations that this movie would be better than The Avengers as what some people said. That's not the case at all. But just because it's not better than The Avengers or the Iron Man movies, it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it.

I **** ENJOY THIS MOVIE.

I would say that this movie is much more entertaining than the Captain America and Thor movies. This is the movie that is worth my money without making me fall asleep for five minutes during the movie.

There were so many great parts of the movie that I can't list them all.

The cast did a brilliant job in their performance in the movie. I would like to say that this movie will make Chris Pratt a star and I am so glad he is going to do more movies like this. Chris Pratt's charm adds to his performance as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord. He has his charming comedy roots from his earlier works especially from Parks and Recreation which is why him playing Peter Quill is a great casting choice.

Bradley Cooper did a great job voicing of what would have been one of my new favorite superheros, Rocket Raccoon. I really enjoy Rocket Raccoon in the movie so much that I almost forgot Bradley Cooper is voicing him. He is a very good actor. He isn't nominated for two Oscars for nothing!

Vin Diesel also did a great job voicing Groot. Even though he said the same line "I am Groot" all over again in the movie, you can hear, feel and understand the emotions when he repeated the same line all over again.

I want to give credit to Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista for their portrayals of Gamora and Drax respectively. As for Zoe, I enjoy her as Gamora more than her as her character in Avatar. I mean, does anyone remember the characters in Avatar? As for Dave Bautista, I never expected I would enjoy a performance from a wrestler and his portrayal of Drax is great and enjoying to watch.

The supporting actor I enjoyed watching was Karen Gillian. It might be biased due to the fact I am a Whovian and I love her as Amy Pond. But her playing as Nebula is so cool and refreshing. I want to see more of Nebula on the sequel!

The characters they played have chemistry and they also have great character development even though the backstories are not quite elaborated. At this point, the team which I will call by their titular name is so great that if you ask me which Marvel Cinematic Universe team is better, it would be a tie between The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are both funny. They are both charming. They have great chemistry together. It's the hardiest nerd question I will have to face when the time comes.

I loved how there are themes to this movie. My favorite one is about dealing with loss which is quite thought-provoking for a superhero movie. Each of the team member lost something in them. Star-Lord lost his mother. Gamora lost her parents. Drax lost the family he loved most. Rocket lost his optimism because of the experiments he is forced to take in. Groot....ummm....I have no idea but Groot felt sad too. The way they dealt with their loss lead to their criminal activities but they dealt loss with hope as soon as they realized that they still have a chance in saving many people's lives. Another great theme is teamwork which is pretty self-explanatory.

The direction and the screenplay from James Gunn shows how much of a passionate nerd he is in this movie without isolating the non-nerdy audience. I love his take on the superhero heroes and the fact he is directing and writing the sequel makes me excited already.

The 70s-80s pop-culture references are awesome especially "The Legend of Footloose" part. I fear the day when Peter Quill comes back to Earth and learns the existence of Justin Bieber.

The soundtrack is unexpectedly perfect for this movie. This adds more to Star-Lord's personality. After all, he is the protagonist and he is the main focus of the movie. I will review the entire soundtrack in a separate review soon.

While not entirely better than The Avengers as what some people including myself hoped, this is a great, if not one of the best Marvel Cinematic Universe movies so far. I will watch this movie again as soon as it comes out on home media.

Imagine my surprise when I began to feel a genuine connection to the movie (and yes, even to Rocket Raccoon, who is hilarious). The movie may not be striving for high art, but it is just about everything you could ask for from an action flick: all shades of humor, glorious special effects/cinematography, interesting characters, and even an interesting plot. It didn't quite have room for an interesting villain, but I still give it a 9 out of 10 for going above and beyond my expectations. I would happily watch it again. Expand

It's not particularly bad, but it is a very flawed movie. The main reason would be the fact that the character interactions were mainly exposition. It's like a stuck record - they either tell their past stories or explain the plot, or constantly bash your head with reasons why they do or will do the things they do. In short - sloppy character writing that relies on exposition way too much.
Second problem is the plot, that really doesn't have much of themes or ideas behind it. It felt like it was to further up the Thanos plot line. It all revolves around the mystical relic that everyone wants. That's it.
Lastly, its saving grace was supposed to be its light-hearted humor. I expected it to be something similar to more subtle humor in previous Marvel installments (for example: Iron Man, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier) however this time the humor to me was way weaker, because of its abundance. It wasn't subtle and it relied more on specific character traits, pop culture references and easily noticeable formulas. It stuck to a few places, but ultimately fell flat.
In the end, the film wasn't a waste of my time, but I left the theater unimpressed.

Incredibly witty yet scruffy with amazing style that doesn't follow any superhero formula, it is near impossible to dislike Guardians of the Galaxy. Classic soundtracks oddly fit the cosmic saga, giving it grounded and slightly nostalgic feeling. This may very well be the Star Wars of this generation.

This adventure of ragged uncommon crew has a unique light tone, almost resembling morning children cartoon or video game. The humor is spot-on, cleverly written and personalized the characters better than dull gloomy distress most fantasy movies opt for. While the dysfunctional team has its issues, they are delivered with ease, discarding any cumbersome drama and replacing them with accessible comedy.

Chris Pratt is an excellent choice for Peter Quill. He is a good example of ruffian with somewhat noble heart, and Chris Pratt hasn't been too fixed on a protagonist image. It works well since Pratt could be your usual hero, but more importantly he brings great unsuspected humor. His character serves as anchor for humanity, because even though the tale happens in gigantic other realm, Quill is often shown as mere human and this aspect will definitely resonate with the audience.

Zoe Saldana as Gamora is now green skinned. After Avatar and Star Trek it’s safe to say that she possesses the exotic alien look. As a veteran of sci-fi genre, she carries herself comfortably and quite believably as action persona. Her character is indeed a peculiar love interest for Quill, but deep down it’s more a search for companionship rather than romance. Dave Bautista as Drak hasn’t got much experience in acting yet, still this character suits him and with a compliment of good cast, he probably has the better role any pro wrestlers have had in recent time.

Groot and Rocket are both CGI. Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, is the heart of the movie. He’s a strange mix of raccoon and mercenary, a bit broken and still eloquently funny. Vin Diesel voices Groot, ironic that most of his roles are tough guys but as a gullible and vocabulary challenged tree that he delivers his better work. Aside from these two, CGI also covers the vistas and expected laser shooting futuristic action.

Design for the setting is great, often depicting places like those in video games. The splendor of debris and explosive accompanies the movie, it’s undeniably a good spectacle and top tier for blockbuster. The director James Gunn delivers a good continuation of scenes, humorous line and constant pace. Soundtracks from classic 80s music is gold, the contrast works much better than any techno tune could possible do.

Guardians of Galaxy is a rare movie that keeps its audience fully entertained, it doesn’t let up, if fact it gets better as it progresses. It’s a heartfelt and genuine effort to connect with audience. When it ends, it gives a warm fuzzy feeling as one leaves the cinema. It is no less than an utter cinematic achievement.

For those calling this our generations star wars or spiritual successor to star wars, those people need to visit their local health facilities and have their frontal lobes examined. On the positive side this movie has the usual visual flair of a good marvel movie. It also has the same simple mundane plotting coupled with another poorly executed villain. Your enjoyment of this movie will also rest on how funny you find the constant joking that occurs about every 5 minutes. In the theatre that I saw it, I heard the audience chuckle once and I must have chuckled about 3 times quietly to myself. The movie eventually ends with the usual marvel clichés. People are comparing this to the Avengers. I enjoyed the Avengers more and I thought the humor worked much better that movie. The rumor is that guardians will team up with the Avengers for the super movie Avengers 2. I really hope they start bring more than the usual that we have come to expect. Expand

The best thing that Guardians have going for them during the whole film is it’s obscurity to the marvel universe with the audience. Most people know whom Iron man, Captain America and Thor are, however hardly anyone knows members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. This is played on with great affect during the film which allows itself to be humorous in some places. Additionally the film can be a little laid back and comedic due to this obscurity. It can be jokey in some certain places and doing so helps us enjoy the characters even more.

The cast themselves have done a brilliant job in introducing us to these unheard heroes. Each member has their own traits to them with all of them being a joy to watch. Furthermore due to each character having their own trait it allows banter to be bounced of each other again giving a more likeable appeal to the cast. All the cast mould well together making the Guardians a cohesive team which when together is a moment to see.

The one item that I wished they touched upon more is the backstory of some of the characters, especially Rocket Raccoon and Groot. It is touched upon during the film but not to a good extent where we know where these characters have come from. By developing their backstories we could have seen more character from Rocket and Groot and allow us to see how they came to be brothers in arms.

In all, Guardians of the Galaxy is a fantastic film in which sets a new era for the Marvel franchise. The story is brilliant since it allows these characters their own individuality, their own spotlight however when the time comes, when they are all brought together its magnificent. The characters all mould together extremely well allowing banter to bounce of one another directly causing a likable cast. Guardians of the Galaxy is a must see.

Fast forward to present day, when technology makes even the ludicrous appear real, yet somehow we get dialogue written by high schoolers for grade schoolers narrating a plot that has been retreated so many damn times I'm surprised congress hasn't enacted a law against it. If it weren't for the pre-existing weirdos from the Marvel Universe this movie script would be sitting on some producer's desk hoping to make the cut for the SciFi channel.

Here's what you get - a few somewhat entertaining moments (most of which have been released in the trailers) and the slightest bit of suspense as to what nonsense will be used to bridge the next gaping hole in the plot. Oh...and you get to watch what powers these uncharacteristic heroes can use.

Can you tell I'm peeved?! Mostly because I waited to watch one of these summer blockbusters with a pretty good Metacritic score...lot of good that did. This move has very few redeeming qualities. Dumb ass lines, same old same old plot and day time soap opera like emotional autism. It holds your attention much like a three ring circus with a bunch of fools, jugglers and lion tamers would. But I'm afraid to say it has far less density.

But for me this movie was so dumb that it would up being pretty entertaining. This may not be the most well constructed or well put together Marvel film in fact it might be the weakest of Phase 2 but it was the most fun I’ve had watching a Marvel movie since The Avengers, which while I didn’t think it was the best of comic book movies was entertaining, and considering how dark and brooding a lot of comic book movies are now it was nice to have something fun that was just a nice standalone film. And give Marvel credit for blowing away my skepticism and making this film about a group I’ve never heard of work. Because this film has little to no substance, it doesn’t have as much rewatch value as other Marvel films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier but as a fun summer blockbuster this movie fits the bill. If you are going in expecting nothing more than a fun summer blockbuster you’ll be entertained but if not you’ll probably disappointed. I’d say its worth one viewing. Don’t know if I’d watch this movie over and over again but for one viewing it was fun although I have no idea how you can pull off a sequel to this but we’ll see. For what this was it wasn’t the best Marvel film I’ve ever seen but it was one of the most entertaining ones I’ve seen in a while and I think for that the film should be given some credit where credit is do it did what I movie should do it entertained me. After being forced to watch Ex3 and Hercules Guardians of the Galaxy was paradise. I just love superhero movies and finally marvel brought out a film that was on par with the Nolan batman trilogy.

The guardians blew avengers out the water despite a weaker cast on paper. Chris Pratt was incredible as Star Lord and Bradley Cooper voiced Rocket well, I would also praise Vin Diesel for his performance as Groot but he didn't say much.

On my all time favourite movies this is in the top 15 for the great humour and it ranks 2nd behind the dark knight in my list of favourite superhero movies. The film set up very nicely for a sequel and had a great soundtrack. I'm hooked on a feeling!

The effects are good made, enjoyable for the eye and the brain. It still has good fashioned jokes but a rather movie like that seemed to me a bit silly as the jokes were a bit childish, still funny for us.
Acting is good, they really made it good there. Characters are also cool - a talking rodent, a talking and transforming tree, a modified woman turned into a living weapon and a big muscular guy that is looking like Agent 47 on steroids and on alcohol. Not even want to talk about the other characters (negative guys and misc.) The antithesis was there too. But in the end positive always wins, while negative is still right a bit. Doesn't actually affect anything on me.
The story (plot) isn't actually that bad. Placed into a sci-fi contemporary Earth time, 2015 probably, it's like Star Wars which is good, aliens everywhere and big ships - everything good for a movie of that kind.
As my review stays like the antithesis, I rate 9 because the positive isn't always right. Enjoy watching this movie; if you didn't go watch it now 3D!

After all I was set in space with all new character we have to learn about, as well as how they meet and then have them do something heroic. I thought it would feel rushed like if the Avengers had to explain each character origins instead of having all of Phase 1 to do that. Clearly my prediction was wrong as it is so perfect it is hard to explain why. It's a story about a group of relatively unknown character set in a relatively unknown setting and is so brilliant for it's ability for the character to run around and not bother with explanations except for one small part in the middle of the movie but it never loses the fast paced story and action. It doesn't have the super awesome super hero fight scenes of The Winter Solider but fills the gap with some awesome star-ship battles and the music which proves that old 70-80s songs can be better than having music the likes of Star Wars. The character are a ragtag band of misfits who take steps to make the film not take it self seriously at some points. But I think the treasure is the fact it made Chris Pratt, a talking raccoon, a green skinned assassin, a walking tree, and a alien maniac look like the coolest people in the universe. Expand

I have never reviewed a movie before, but I came here to promise you anything in this world that the person who wrote the script for this movie does not have an IQ higher than 85.

There is nothing in the movie that is not unfathomably cliche (a sci-fi movie where protagonists fight for a mythical orb for no reason, a deus ex machina ending that I can't even remember despite seeing it a few days ago, and absolutely moronic dialogue in which characters announce their intentions for actions while doing them).

Also, the poor delivery of every "joke" renders the entire thing devoid of humor, unless you think that a giant ambiguous plant repeating its name every 5 minutes is funny.

If you are an idiot, then feel free to see this movie. If not, do yourself a favor and watch something that is not utterly pathetic in every way.

I waited about a week and saw it again. I enjoyed it even more. Now it has been almost a week since then and not only do I want to see it again, but my thoughts on the movie have only improved since I first saw it. I still can't completely decide if this is the best Marvel movie or second best next to the original Iron Man. I just can't come up with many flaws for this movie.
The chemistry is top notch between the characters even more so than Avengers. This movie was also much more funny than any of the comedies I have seen this year. Couple that with amazing action and special effects and you have a grand slam of a movie. I have never not wanted a movie to end so bad. This might have been the most fun I have had at a movie ever.
One of the most intergral parts of the movie was the soundtrack which had no original songs on it. This is not a complaint, no, no, far from it. I immediately wanted to listen to the classic tracks from the 70's on a cassette player no less right when I left the theater. Don't be surprised if old orange foam headphones start selling like crazy.
The wait for Guardians of the Galaxy will be excruciating. I used to not be able to wait for Avengers 2, but this has surpassed anything that Avengers ever gave me. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is now my most anticipated movie for the next few years.

I won't write a massive review about this movie, but I just want to add credibility to this rating, I would point out the strengths and the weaknesses.

- The cast is well chosen, both the anti-heroes and the villains are very well believed

- Even though the backstory of each character seem a bit 'force pushed' against the viewer, you feel sympathised with the Guardians.
- You aren't getting a deep, vibrant story, but an adrenaline, fast paced adventure, with a 'crew' you fall somewhat attached.

- As I said, it is not meant to bring something new to the blockbuster movie genre, but it is a great adventure movie that even people outside the marvel/dc universe feel as if they have experienced a pretty good entertaining and that's part of its strength actually, it manages to bring a rather complex universe and simplifies to the 'outside of comic' people while managint the 'comic fanboys' to nourish and savor its details.

I think it was another victory as I was rather preocupied how they would bring such a complex universe to the screens, and they have done it once again, all I can say is that DC should hire some of the screenplay writers on Marvel because they do a pretty good job.

Metacritic Rating: 9/10

Aside from being set in space Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't really differ all that much from the Marvel movie formula of the last few years with the focus yet again on a mystical item that apparently yields great power. Despite this Guardians of the Galaxy is great fun from start to finish and is arguably the funniest of all the comic book movies to date. The performances and action sequences are as excellent as well making for a superbly entertaining addition to the Marvel universe. I can pay no higher complement than to say that it is probably as close as we’ll ever get to seeing Firefly back on our screens.

As it turns out, this was a fresh new banana that was a little green on the outside but still quite tasty on the inside.

I have very little experience with this Marvel series of comics. I can’t say whether the film is true to the comics or not. And, I don’t care. This is a well made film that will appeal to a wide audience. It is fast, fun, and fantastic.

The formula for this film as my son Nolan also pointed out, runs parallel to the epic Avengers movie of a few years ago. That film however had all of its characters established in an impressive run of eight movies. This film had no such introduction. Yet it did have one thing on the Avengers; the opening scene introducing the main character and setting the tone for the entire film. This opening sequence may very well be the best of any of the Marvel films. Now let’s not forget that the opening scene for the Avengers features Natasha Romanov taking a call from Coulsen during an “interrogation” and in its own right is one of the best ever. But it did not tell us anything about the movie we were about to watch. It showed us that Scarlett Johanssen can pull off bad ass and look great doing it. It gave us insight into her character and it was brilliant. But Guardians’ simple and fun opening told a lifetime of tales about our “hero” to be in the short span of a few minutes.

We start in 1988 when Peter is just a boy in a somewhat dramatic scene (no spoilers here) and quickly cut to 26 years later and a now grown Peter in a scene that is part ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and part ‘Risky Business’. The music and the action drives home the core value of our protagonist as well as any opening sequence in any of Marvel's other feature films.

The opening is followed by 120 minutes of fun. This movie moves at a fast pace, maybe a touch too fast at times, but never to an overly frenzied spectacle. In a very short period of time we are introduced to a full cast of “heroes” and director, James Gunn manages to give us characters we can feel. This is no easy task and many a good movie has failed to properly develop characters in this kind of group setup.

Marvel has always done a great job of injecting humor into the sometimes dark themes that permeate the super hero versus super villain dichotomy of this genre. Guardians manages to be a genuinely funny movie from start to finish. This story never really takes itself too seriously and that is what makes it so darn good. Fantastic Four (2005) offered similar 'smart-alec' humor like this film.

Our main character is absolutely lovable and pretty tough in pinch. At the end we are given a hint that he is more than he appears to be, and you will of course want to stay all the way to end of the credits to find a most peculiar revelation that may foreshadow the return to the silver screen of a quirky character you never would have guessed.

This is one of Marvel's best efforts. Yes, it is that good. You need to go see it, right now!
