OH WELLL I GUESS THIS IS MY CUE TO START LAUGHING SINCE EVERYBODY ELSE IS LAUGHING. it got to the point where people were laughing and snickering at every tidbit in the movie, cause they thought that part was supposed to be a cue for the audience to laugh. nobody knew what was and what wasn't supposed to be funny!

I guess I could call the humor in this movie DRY HUMOR cause the jokes are executed with a lack of exaggeration, and dry humor doesn't make me laugh out loud. dry humor just tells my mind that im supposed to be laughing at something.

and that's what this movie fails at ultimately. this movie is a **** joke! never once was I worried about these evil guys destroying and taking over the galaxy! I was never worried! I was never at the edge of my seat! the movie didn't fill me with intensity and epic feelings! I couldn't because everybody was too busy laughing at each other and making a joke out of everything! soooo I wasn't laughing, I wasn't at the edge of seat in intensity, this movie just fails all around!

the only good part of this movie was the somewhat epic ending with the bad guy, but even that got ruined with an attempted funny joke. the ending battle did get me laughing, cause it was so ridiculous you had to laugh. sooo this movie did make me genuinely laugh ONE TIME! but in doing so it ruined a totally epic battle that this movie had going at the time! soooo they sacrificed an epic final battle for a laugh. good choice director.

overall, special effects were amazing, the only good thing about this movie. some touching moments here and there, a somewhat epic final battle, and you got yourselves a satisfactory, mediocre, marvel movie. lol goddamn marvel movies have been going downhill lately. seriously I would only watch this if you got nothing else to do on the weekend, but im pretty sure you can find things to do a lot better than this average film lol

I'm past that point in life, but noted (and laughed at) some of the obligatory pop-culture jokes aimed more at parents. (Funny note: Michael Rooker, "Merle" from "The Walking Dead," shows up as a teal-skinned intergalactic redneck!) I gather most people didn't mind that plot was silly, the hero a dope and the raccoon inexplicable ... it's an OK "popcorn movie" and achieves that purpose well. Expand

After all the hype and box office numbers, I finally get to watch Guardians. Actually, I watched it twice because I thought I missed something everybody else seemed to have gotten and yet still don't see why this movie is so hyped.

Yeah, entertaining...yeah, nice visuals...was the story rushed, absolutely...was the editing crappy, without a doubt...because I guess unlike everyone else, I kinda want to get the whole story and not the condensed version Guardians was left with (SPOILER: think Rocket crying over Grut...absolutely amateur editing).

Besides all that, I was entertained so can't ask for more...well, I can and should get more but eh, it's Hollywood 2014...nothing but reboots and hacks so an original plot, you know, band of fighters join to together to save the gal..ax...y....okay so Star Wars did it first, so what at least you have space ships and al...ie...ns....okay so a hundred other movies, same thing. My point is, 4 good jokes in the movie, that's it and the rest is rebooted, regurgitated sci-fi crap.

If you are into this space-opera/superhero/action genre stuff, then "Guardians of the Galaxy" is a must-watch for You. If you are not, then be sceptical and do not expect to see the greatest movie ever.

A huge weakness for this film is it's screenplay which is a huge cliche. Or maybe it is a parody of itself. Either way, if you have any experience in watching movies, you will always be able to predict what is going to happen next. Although one of the main aspects of the film is the fate of the entire galaxy, there is never really anything at stake. The climax is cheap and predictable

On the other hand, "Guardians of Galaxy" can be surprisingly fun at times. All actors are good too, even though the characters are all black and white - this is a classic good vs. evil fairytale after all. Visual effects are outstanding as well and if You are going to watch it, watch it in 3D, because 3D always covers some of the film's weaker aspects and failures.

All in all, "Guardians of the Galaxy" is not a terrible movie, but I would not be as psyched about it as the rest 95% of Internet is. Seeing its success, we should brace ourselves - the sequels, spin-offs and reboots are coming.

Guardians of the Galaxy is childish, clumsy and looks like a mess all in one but still manages to entertain enough to make it worth watching. Depending how you look at it, you'll either find it completely stupid or entertaining. I say its both.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't go in believing the hype. Worth a matinee pricetag but not the blockbuster hollywood so desperately wants us to believe it is and clearly needs this summer (the worst hollywood summer season in years.)

The heroes of the movie consist of a talking raccoon, a green woman assassin, a muscle bound mercenary, a talking tree and a funny human front man. The movie seemed to be confused on whether they wanted to make a a superhero film for the kids, a serious film targeting adults, or a rom-com teenager film. It felt like the movie never settled in to a theme and about a dozen times I found myself thinking "that was out of place."

For example, the main hero, played by Chris Pratt, starts off the journey on an abandoned planet where he turns on his 80's walkman, dancing and using the native lizard creatures for microphones to find an orb to make some coin from a collector. Its very fun, light and seems like a great movie that even the kids can come to. It then bounces towards the middle of the movie where the drunken raccoon "rocket" breaks down over his history, saying he didn't want to be created and at one point even tells his co-hero that he doesn't care that he lost his wife and daughter, in a move that probably sounded better written than they pulled off on film. Then add in and awkwardly long flip off scene from the main hero to the camera, an awkward blacklight "sperm joke, and finishing the movie with a "We're the guardians of the galaxy, **** punchline.

I did find myself however enjoying the special effects and was surprisingly impressed by the acting from a tree, raccoon and former WWE wrestler.

Worth seeing once, but it could definitely have done without all the hype.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fresh installment into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Guardians of The Galaxy" is a fun adventure featuring an interesting leading ensemble of characters. The film's visual effects really help to bring the various extra-terrestrial settings to life. The pop compilation soundtrack is an additional fun factor to the film's light-hearted humour.

However, these features seem to make up for and mask "Guardians"' lacking plot in which a forgettable villain seeks to destroy the universe while the protagonists take measures to stop them, something not too dissimilar to other Marvel movie story lines ("Thor: The Dark World" in particular). This cliché plot needs to be given a rest, especially when the film doesn't seem to really accentuate that particular threat and its implications.

Other than colourful alien worlds, there is nothing else that this film seems to offer or present other than its entertaining cast and humour. I really would have liked for a better insight into Peter Quill and his experiences, having been taken away so suddenly from Earth, and a better look at the various worlds we are presented with in the film. Star Wars is a great example of showcasing distinct planets that we become accustomed too and can easily recognise; "Guardians" needs to take a page or two from that book.

I have a feeling that the direction in which this film could have been taken in was shunted due to the fact that Marvel wanted to introduce key plot points that would feature and play heavily in the overall arc of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its Phases, especially with the expanded introduction of Thanos, whom we can speculate will be the ultimate villain in an "Avengers" movie. Though I understand that this film had the appropriate setting and theme in which to officially introduce these plot points, it feels like it drags it down from feeling like its own, separate entity and not just something that has to very specifically tie into Marvel's current plans for their movies.

"Guardians of The Galaxy" is a particularly entertaining film with the crux of its popularity seemingly accumulated from the wild response to the vivid and discrete ensemble of characters and the film's lively and amusing tone. The cliché plot and forgettable villain disappointingly drags "Guardians" down. Don't be fooled by the critics' consensus; this film is good but its notable errors prove that there is definitely room for improvement. Origin stories often tend to fall into this trap but leeway is obviously permitted as the filmmakers get to find their footing and subsequently and hopefully deliver a more developed story and villain for the sequel.

Is "Guardians" worth the watch? Yes! But, don't expect anything more than just a fun comic-book movie.

But as a film, i'ts a bit repetitive and doesn't arc very well start to finish. all the stuff that makes it feel like a "movie" seems shoehorned in, which is why you have a 3rd act which races up on you once you get there, and all of a sudden you're thrust into an epic battle that you don't really care about. "Guardians" values jokes over drama, and it's not funny enough to get away with it. Expand

This opens things up for irreverent humor, which isn't always that funny. Action is inevitable, but most of it's fast & noisy without standing out. There's also lots to look at, including dozens of fun creatures and some cool design. The playful tone and unusual individuals make it entertaining, but the underlying lack of originality keeps it from soaring. Expand

Don't you hate it when the whole world is caught up in a cultural moment, where everything just seems right with a movie, and you just don't feel it? Maybe I'm jaded, maybe I'm out of the times, or maybe I just think entertainment needs to "earn it"a bit more. Everything here is certainly in earnest and yes I had some laughs, especially with Rocket Raccoon and Groot (who are so good, they should have their own trilogy), but the film felt empty, poorly scripted (especially for Pratt's Starlord, leaving him with little to do but be cute, which he oozes effortlessly) and just creatively bankrupt. In particular, the device of the walkman could have been brilliant, but the filmmakers lack originality in their music choices and simply coast on songs that have already had their massive cultural moment (in particular "Hooked on a Feeling" which all but belongs to Quentin Tarantino, not to mention momentous choices from "Boyz in the Hood" and a PSH scene from "Almost Famous"). It would be one thing if Gunn was either 80 years old, or 22, but Gunn came of age with these other films (I'm assuming he's seen these touchstones) so his borrowing feels much more like laziness than homage.

I am also shocked that the filmmakers were unable to make Zoe Saldana, one of Hollywood's most stunningly beautiful actresses look good. Honestly, their makeup made her almost unattractive. And this is someone who blew people away in BLUE makeup and cat eyes in "Avatar", and is incredibly sexy in the 2 recent Star Trek films (where she at least had a chance to appear in her natural pigment). Fortunately she brings gravitas to an almost thankless role (except the enormous residuals), thankless because the writers seem to forget about her until she is convenient.
Mostly this is a caper that spends a great deal of time with bickering, and highlighting ways in which Pratt's character is an unredeemable jackass to just about everyone he's ever met including his dying mother, some unfortunate little alien flying creatures, his father figure Yondu (Micahael Rooker).

And once again, this is a movie where the film's funniest sequence is all but ruined by the trailer. I was bored watching the characters' introductions as previously seen in the trailer because, yep, seen it already, and it was funnier in the trailer because it had tighter editing.

As I said, there are so many problems I didn't know where to begin. I'll stop here. Go see GOTG. Enjoy it's moment. I'm sorry it somehow escaped me.

After 6 horrible movies in a row (Avengers, Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Cap America 2, X-Men Days of Future Past, Guardians of the Galaxy), it is safe to say Disney has officially ruined Marvel. Done seeing their movies at the cinema.

No, The Amazing Spider Man 2 is not part of the list because it is produced by Sony. That was the only good Marvel movie since Iron Man 1.

Way too many effects overload the story until at times the screen is a virtual moving abstract painting hardly making any visual sense at all. The tongue in cheek cuteness is way too self conscious. Zoe looked great in blue in Avatar, but covered in green in many of the shots she looks unattractive, which is something I never thought I would say about her. She's always been the sexiest actress around in my book. The story is your average save the world from a weapon of mass destruction plot, where the bad guy has absolutely no motive for being destructive. Maybe once it becomes available for a few bucks it might be worth a casual viewing from the corner of your eye when you're doing something else, but as I write this it's only downloadable for $20, and it is definitely not worth that.

I have to add something about the reviews posted here. In more than one review, a poster criticized the "dialogs" in the movie. There is no such word as "dialogs." The plural of dialog, is dialog. Just like the word "fish." And the better spelling is "dialogue." And I will agree, there was a lot of bad dialogue in the movie. But there were no "dialogs."

This is my primary problem with Guardians of the Galaxy. It follows the same formula of others in the Marvel cinematic universe but it fails to add it's own distinctive personality to the trade. While a lot of elements in 'Guardians' feel very polished; from the well-crafted action sequences to the witty dialog it cannot shake the overwhelming stale feeling left by the films the proceeded it. 'Guardians' just doesn't feel original.

The story of Peter Quill and the formation of the other Guardians is predictable and full of typical blockbuster cliche's but this is not to say that it isn't fun. At times, the tale can be thrilling, and almost engrossing, but it all amounts to feel like I've seen this before. Many of the scenes feel directly ripped out of other films it resembles, and this results in the overwhelming feeling of deja vu.

With all this said, Guardians of the Galaxy can be a lot of fun, just don't go in expecting something spectacularly original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok this one is for all you retarded, ignorant and annoying fanboys out there that are so used to lying to themselves that marvel and superhero (no capital letters thank you very much) movies aren't useless pieces of boring **** and actually good that when they finally see a MERE AVERAGE movie they spray their pants and go "OMG BEST MOVIE EVEERRRR".

Look, if morons like the guys who rate GotG 10 have never seen a genuinely good film it's your goddamn problem but stop pretending you actually know anything about cinema and get the **** off metacritic.

GOTG : the review :
The good : the 5 main characters are visually interesting. There are some REAL actors in this movie (Rooker, Riley, Close, Deltoro), unfortunately they share 5 minutes of screen time. A couple of original situations and jokes that rise above the usual mediocrity I've grown accustomed (and fed up with) to when it comes to superhero movies. The dialogs are a lot better than your usual retarded and overused lines nowadays blockbusters vomit in our ears. Also it's a space opera and not a superhero movie. That's about it.

The very bad : was sold as a new and fresh approach to comic book films, ends up being the usual pile of redundant clichés and thrash that has been thrown to our faces since the last 10 years. tries to have a hardcore edge but being a disney film (including a line that uses the word "whore". Yup, a disney film), that vibe gets quickly kicked in the nuts. So why even try being hardcore in the first place?

Apart from a couple of scenes, there is absolutely nothing new with this movie. You have your mandatory space dogfight, confusing brawl, escape from prison scene, all the usual bull****, shot as unoriginally as possible. Formulaic, boring, predictable from beginning to end. The plot is three sentences long. The main cast sucks, Pratt is useless and transparent and that hack Cooper tries to play it mob gangster (I heard he was going for Joe Pesci in Goodfellas. PESCI IN GOODFELLAS, can you believe the nerve on this ****ing guy??), but fails miserably because he has no acting talent whatsoever and becomes incredibly annoying in about 15 minutes.

Saldana is useless and all the characters are so clichéd, generic and poorly written or fleshed out that you quickly don't give a **** about what happens to them. And shoutout to Vin Diesel and his - wait for it- SINGLE LINE OF DIALOG. Talk about acting skills.
The space dogfight scenes look like ATTACK OF THE ****ING CLONES. Didn't everyone hate that movie? Could you be honest with yourselves just a minute and acknowledge that GotG isn't really better? Not to mention the last half hour is a ripoff of Return of the Jedi. Call it a "tribute", I call this a ripoff.
The humor works on a 10/2 ratio : 10 jokes, two giggles (not LAUGHS). I could go on and on and on but I'm getting fed up writing about this turkey.

Final words : geekboys, NO MOVIE DESERVES 0 or 10. Go and learn how to ****ing grade. A movie deserves 10 if it can resurrect the dead. Since this never happened, stick to 8 as being the absolute top grade, and adjust your ratings accordingly. When you rate a movie 10 or 0, you're just screaming I'M A TEENAGE ****ING IDIOT THAT HAS NO CLUE TO WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. Furthermore by doing this you are ****ing up the rating system, and trhanks to that a metacritic ratings now means **** ALL.
That being said GotG rises 5 inches above the usual boring and retarded nonsense contemporary blockbuster's average quality thanks to a couple of funny dialogs and a second degree approach that merely saves the day.
Otherwise it's just your same old, same old bull**** script that has been done a thousand times before and will be done a thousand times again. Until you ****ing retarded idiots pull your heads out of your asses and start asking for actual quality productions instead of being spoon fed the usual atrocious insults to intelligence that hollywood execs enjoy shoving down your throats in exchange for your precious dollars.

Most of all leave the ratings to people who know something about good movies and have an IQ superior to 65. Nighty night retarded kiddies, time to go to bed.

Fast forward to present day, when technology makes even the ludicrous appear real, yet somehow we get dialogue written by high schoolers for grade schoolers narrating a plot that has been retreated so many damn times I'm surprised congress hasn't enacted a law against it. If it weren't for the pre-existing weirdos from the Marvel Universe this movie script would be sitting on some producer's desk hoping to make the cut for the SciFi channel.

Here's what you get - a few somewhat entertaining moments (most of which have been released in the trailers) and the slightest bit of suspense as to what nonsense will be used to bridge the next gaping hole in the plot. Oh...and you get to watch what powers these uncharacteristic heroes can use.

Can you tell I'm peeved?! Mostly because I waited to watch one of these summer blockbusters with a pretty good Metacritic score...lot of good that did. This move has very few redeeming qualities. Dumb ass lines, same old same old plot and day time soap opera like emotional autism. It holds your attention much like a three ring circus with a bunch of fools, jugglers and lion tamers would. But I'm afraid to say it has far less density.

i'd give the movie a 4 but at least the boys liked it so if yoiu have a couple of teens lying around take them to see it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Extremely shallow adaptation of Dan Abnett Gotg. Helmed by Scooby Doo director under the uncompromising guidance of Kevin Feige. This movie is nothing more than a bunch of sitcom skits strung together by a forgettable plot involving another cosmic item. Ronan is as forgettable as the Dark Elf guy from thor 2. The final battle that ends with a dance number and human/oid chain holding of hands is just the kind of crappy stupid dreck that's slowly been working its way into the Marvel phase 2 movies. There are no real stakes or feeling of danger as everything is wrapped neatly for the convenience of the stupid masses of fanboys who will flock to this movie and eagerly swallow whatever Marvel Studios sees fit to **** out nowadays. It's not particularly bad, but it is a very flawed movie. The main reason would be the fact that the character interactions were mainly exposition. It's like a stuck record - they either tell their past stories or explain the plot, or constantly bash your head with reasons why they do or will do the things they do. In short - sloppy character writing that relies on exposition way too much.
Second problem is the plot, that really doesn't have much of themes or ideas behind it. It felt like it was to further up the Thanos plot line. It all revolves around the mystical relic that everyone wants. That's it.
Lastly, its saving grace was supposed to be its light-hearted humor. I expected it to be something similar to more subtle humor in previous Marvel installments (for example: Iron Man, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier) however this time the humor to me was way weaker, because of its abundance. It wasn't subtle and it relied more on specific character traits, pop culture references and easily noticeable formulas. It stuck to a few places, but ultimately fell flat.
In the end, the film wasn't a waste of my time, but I left the theater unimpressed.

The guardians are all well presented and easily engaged with. Marvel's ability to weave comedy into it's films is also still present, giving Guardians of the Galaxy a nice balance between action and comedy. The story is sadly holding this Marvel entry back. The plot is easily forgettable and the friendship and formulation of the group of guardians is ridiculously unlikely. However the loveable guardians and impressive cast make for an enjoyable watch that combines action and comedy in a satisfying way. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Guardians of the Galaxy, o Star Wars wannabe

• Vin Diesel como Groot — I am Groot.
• Dave Bautista como Drax — I am muscle.

A promising cast and story is let down by weird flourishes of humour. Any build up of drama in the world ending climax of the film is lost because the resolution to that conflict is and you won't believe this, a dance off.

Am I putting too strain on the on the movie itself? But here comes a realization: forgetting what we just witnessed as the bathroom line piss down the drain after the big show.

It is a worthwhile praise for actors to followup on a comedic relief it is a short fun fling.
Yet if there was a trend, the trend is to get in bed, jerk it off in the next 5 minutes, and call it sex.
We've all seen it, why bother with a newborn bastard.

High hopes for the sequel, there are some really clever ideas in here that, on second attempt might just be great. It is also too cheesy for adults. Weak villian and motives, many of the characters are very uninteresting. Good points are that it is well paced and it is better than most Marvel movies (that does not mean much though). A film with so many basic elements should never get scores like 8 or 9 out of 10 like the ones I´m seeing here. There are many better blockbusters released in 2014. Expand

It wasn't funny enough to be a real comedy, or exciting enough to be an action film, or smart enough to be a drama, etc. etc. Another issue was that the two computer rendered characters - Rocket Racoon and Groot - stole every scene from the bland/irritating human ones, especially given a highly underwhelming performance by the actors. Last but not least the movie is incessantly peppered with songs that are highly dependent on taste - if you liked them then they probably picked up the film. If you didn't then it just made it all the more tiresome. Ultimately I wouldn't recommend Guardians of the Galaxy, though I suppose it might be okay for a Tuesday showing at a cheap theater. Expand

Don't get me wrong, it has it's funny moments like the 'pelvic sorcery' line got a good laugh out of me. But other than that all the humor seems to try and force it's way in rather than flowing naturally. A lot of the jokes either make me chuckle very slightly or just fall flat altogether and that's not what I expected. Every time someone told me about this movie they told me how funny it was, how smart it was, and how much fun it was, and it's possible that I had too high expectations before I watched it but even then it still was just decent. Now, I can't really comment on the characters as I haven't read the comic books and don't know how they were written but my god are they boring. Seriously, I enjoyed Bradley Cooper as Rocket but everyone else was so boring! Yes, even Groot! And the story was so rushed I watched it 2 days ago and I barely remember what happened. Also, spoiler alert here but the ending was SO cliche that it was just sad. And the beginning 5 minutes of the movie was just to serve a means to the end of the movie, nothing else. Overall, I don't think this is the worst movie I've seen but it's definitely overrated as hell and shouldn't be praised as much as it should. That manly because the movie doesn't divide it's time well among the characters, instead the movie mainly on one character Star lord, who is arguably the biggest ass in the movie. The only character I like in this movie would be Groot who can't speak but can convey the most emotion. The other characters we learn vary little about. But the worst part is the villain who is not given a back story for us to understand, all we get is he wants to kill a race of people for some reason that is not explained. When viewed in tandem with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Guardians of the Galaxy makes a lot more sense. Gunn and Pratt sticks out a branch in this infamous franchise that has the essence of friendship in its root.

Guardians Of The Galaxy

Gunn has made a family drama. This space isn't filled with pew-pew guns anymore- not technically!- it focuses on gritty 1-0-1 textbook drama that ought to warm you in this train of cold superhero blockbusters. James Gunn, the co-writer and director, of this surprise entry in the MCU world is every bit of fun as it doesn't sound. With new writers, director, actors and probably the least familiar characters of Marvel, this franchise has managed to work on merit and as they claim it, an "awesome" soundtrack. Gunn's film is filled with pop songs, his passion for music drives the script for the most part of it, in fact you can filter out those moments, some might call it an unpolished or unfinished job I'd like to call it an homage to "the greatest movie ever" Footloose.

Chris Pratt as the "Star-Lord"- a heartwarming name that has its own arc- is as good as the butt of the joke is, in a sketch show. He can never carry the whole show, yet the act would be incompetent without him and his major support and Gunn's trump card, is a raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper. Not only has the character an appropriate depth that any writer would die to have for, but with three dimensional perspective on his views that he shares through a dogmatic edgy humor in his vocab, "you are making me beat up grass.." he remains light headed with a deep voice.

Zoe Saldana never gets to complete her purpose or justify her existence contrary to what her performance says, and so does fall Dave Bautista under that section along with heart swooning Vin Diesel as Groot whose predictability is a double edge sword. Guardians Of The Galaxy is fast with a killer track that makes your feet groove with banal sense of humor and its approach to the sincerest plot points, are they ingenious or game-changing, I think it doesn't matter.
