This film expertly brings together a bunch of unknown heroes and puts them in a team together and made it work. I love all of the characters, especially Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Yondu. My only complaints of the film is once again, the bland villain. In the end, I'm going to give this film a 9.2/10 Expand

It's one of those films you feel like you love while watching it, but that love later turns into 'I liked it'. First, the good stuff: It is a lot of fun, it looks amazing on the big AND small screen and the soundtrack is out-of-this-world good! The characters are good on their own, they are fun and fresh and exactly what was missing in the MCU. Now to the bad stuff: While there are emotional moments and serious conversations, the movie somtimes feels like a joke-fest without any depth to it. It feels like it doesn't want to be meaningful. It wants to make people love it by being a rollercoaster of joy. Now, while that is not the worst thing, for me a 'team-up' movie needs to establish at least some form of emotional connection between the characters and while there certainly were moments like this in the movie, they didn't quite nail the 'we are a team now' feeling for me. This is also the reason why I didn't like the final confrontation of this film as much as I would have liked. This movie has a lot of heart, great characters, amazing visuals and music and it is definetly a must-see, but it's still not as amazing to me as other people say it is. I don't see myself rewatching it on a regular basis, but I was excited to see that the Guardians would return for a sequel. Maybe with a story that gives them more time to become the 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. Overall a very solid entry in the MCU. Expand

However, the plot is once again generic, there is nothing special that makes it get into your brain and stay with you (no special acting, no special score, nothing not seen before). It is also too cheesy for adults. Weak villian and motives, many of the characters are very uninteresting. Good points are that it is well paced and it is better than most Marvel movies (that does not mean much though). A film with so many basic elements should never get scores like 8 or 9 out of 10 like the ones I´m seeing here. There are many better blockbusters released in 2014. Expand

Many saw it as a big risk, having been adapted from source material that isn't well-known, and whose characters were possibly too silly for general audiences to embrace. Those people couldn't have been more wrong if they tried, as James Gunn crafted something truly special here. At this point it became clear that the creatives at Marvel Studios should always be given the benefit of the doubt.

The movie has such a unique voice, and doesn't feel beholden to the cinematic universe that it exists in. The characters have excellent banter, and are a joy to spend time with. They are flawed, but likable. They grow over the course of the film. It's visually spectacular and has an enormous heart. The only things holding it back from perfection are a few moments that go a bit too over-the-top and a forgettable villain. Otherwise, Guardians of the Galaxy is a total blast.

Probably the best MCU movie yet! There is humor, a good plot and relatable characters. The only reason I didn't give it a ten is because the villan is dull and a little cliche-d. Great Movie!

It's the first Marvel movie set in the cosmos, opening the doors to the weirder Marvel Comics stuff. Five unrelated characters are initially united for money but at some point they decide to protect the Galaxy and become heroes instead because a Kree named Ronan the Accuser has gone mad and wants to destroy a planet named Xandar with a powerful artifact. Sure, the movie's plot is messy at best, and there are some pompous heroic lines that become cringy because they are both cliche' and are spoken badly. But it's a stylised movie full of great situational jokes, with great character interactions, likeable protagonists, featuring a great soundtrack composed of '70s hits, and you forget about the above negatives. This movie is more about introducing the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than telling a great and cohesive sci-fi story. Guardians of the Galaxy is more style than substance, but it's undeniably fun. Expand

The Short Verdict: A Marvel film that takes the franchise in a total different direction. Hilarious, fresh, nostalgic soundtrack-wise and unmissable.
>
Related Media: There are comics based on this group of heroes a few decades ago but I read that the comics are not that good. The heroes featured in the comics are also not the five in the film.
>
What’s it like? A human man, a green female alien, a pink male alien with scarred skin, a cybernetic racoon and an anthropomorphised tree must put their differences aside to team up to defeat an alien bent on revenge. Just like the Marvel’s Avengers story then… The story is fun, hilarious and fresh, the soundtrack is nostalgic and the action scenes are well done. >
Pros:
> 1. It is great to have the Marvel franchise go in a new direction and come up with fun new characters that most people have not heard of. >
2. The story is fun and hilarious. >
3. The soundtrack consists of several popular songs from the 70s and 80s that were very nicely placed in the film. >
Cons: >
1. It was slightly poorer towards the end. Only slightly though. >
How would the different age groups rate it?
Children: Excellent
Teenagers: Excellent
Young adults: Excellent
Medium age adults: Excellent
Old adults: Good
>
5/5 (No half scores) - Good enough to watch it in the cinema and to buy the DVD.

High hopes for the sequel, there are some really clever ideas in here that, on second attempt might just be great.

All the characters seem to work really well and Rocket Racoon is amazing. If he wasn't in the film I don't think this movie would have been as well received or as funny. Leaving the theater I was amazed by this movie, recently I re-watched it and some of the magic has worn off sadly. The pacing can seem off and story has many moments of "that is convenient." Plus the ending has one of my favorite moments ever in recent memory, but sadly when you think about it the entire ending is really kind of stupid. Just sit back, grab some popcorn and enjoy it. There is far more to enjoy about his movie than complain about. Expand

This movie just tries to be funny and achieves it flawlessly, it doesn't want to be ground breaking, just have an enjoyable time and that is what it does.
Probably the best Marvel movie so far.

I thought it would be funny and quirky, but James Gunn manages to exceed all my expectations by building something genuinely heart-felt and emotional. Really, it's not the awesome world-building and humour that make this film, instead it's the character dynamics, where each individual manages to bring something really unique and touching to the film. I was genuinely emotionally engaged, on the edge of my seat, and rooting for these heroes right from start to finish, to the point where I laughed and cried.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: There certainly are tiny moments where you sit back and question what the hell this is, but then I guess that just adds to it's overall charm.
VERDICT: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' is a properly fresh, properly exciting comic-book movie with no shame. It's got soul.

NO MARVEL ****

This is Star Wars ... like 30mins into the movie I felt on my chest a feeling that I just felt the first time I saw Star Wars New Hope

The passing, the anti-hero, the good and evil, the mysterious worlds, weapons, species and lore and above it all the crew of the ship and how they come all together was so amazing and I didn't feel the CGI maybe because I was so engaged with the story and the music is well chosen :)

I pray that marvel doesn't bring the others hero crap into guardians 2 and keeps more in this universe.

Out of all the Marvel films, this is the most well-put together comic book adaptation. Unexpectedly, the performance by Chris Pratt was great as he simply dominates the role as Star-Lord. I was a little skeptical on the directional choice of James Gunn. He has a history of writing and directing bad or mediocre films such as Slither, Scooby-Doo, Super, and Dawn of the Dead. I guess I was extremely curious on what this man can accomplish and how he can overcome his mediocre films and create something mind-blowing. And he did!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film really convinced me that Marvel is truly on top of the world. Even though I was very knowledgeable of the original Marvel universe in the comic lines, I knew nothing about these chracters, therefore i didn't know what to expect. i expected this movie to bomb but once again Marvel had done it. The major highlight of this film was the comedy. Each line made me laugh mostly because the film itself never really took itself that seriously because it knew how absurd the premise was. It is so engrossed in int's world that I didn't care that the film had a raccoon wielding a machine gun and a talking tree who can only say "I am Groot". These characters end up to be very compelling as they give their back stories and their personalities are fun to boot. Star Lord is your out of his luck collector, Gamora is the great warrior, Drax is the muscle who doesn't understand figures of speech, Groot is also the muscle, and Rocket is the foul mouth engineer. These chacters are so interesting and so funny that i actually want to sit down and have a cup of coffe with them. The CGI is obvious to spot but the world still felt organic due to the combination of sets as well. James Gunn was the perfect choice of a director since he knows what kind of movie this is and has fun with the premise. In fact he would be a decent replacement for Josh Weadon. Some did mention that Ronin was a lame villain since he wasn't that comedic but I thought it was warranted in order t contrast the humorous personalities of the main team. The biggest problem with this film though are the times when it takes itself seriously. The scenes are done well but they do produce an emotional whiplash For example, the opening scene had Star lords mother die of cancer and right after that he is abducted by aliens and then hunts for treasure. Another moment like that was when Rockect start to break down but it is after he gets drunk in a comedic fashion. Despite this though, the film is definitely worth your time and will make you reach for the stars. Expand

It takes place in outer space, a setting where few action/adventure movies have found traction in recent years. Although it remains to be seen whether this will represent a shrewd movie on the part of Marvel or a significant misstep, the resultant production is engaging for the most part and highly reminiscent of the wave of post-Star Wars space operas that emerged during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The vibe, if not the specifics, is highly reminiscent of The Last Starfighter, Battlestar Galactica, Battle Beyond the Stars, and others. The fact that the movie's "present" is defined as being 1988 and the soundtrack is peppered with '70s tunes cements the retro feeling.

The action takes place not that long ago but definitely far away, although the opening scenes are on Earth. Peter Quill (played by Wyatt Olef as a child and Chris Pratt as an adult) is abducted by aliens shortly after his mother dies of cancer. He grows up as part of a band of intergalactic thieves and smugglers and the first time we meet him as a man (with the code name of "Star Lord"), he's stealing an orb. It turns out that seemingly everyone wants the orb: terrorist Ronan (Lee Pace), who wants to use it to obliterate his enemies, the Xandarans; Thanos (Josh Brolin), the warlord who can use it to attain mastery over the universe; The Collector (Benicio Del Toro), who covets all rare and powerful items; and many lesser entities who plan to sell it. After being arrested and imprisoned (and having the orb taken away from him), Quill is forced into an uneasy alliance with several of his fellow inmates: Gamora (Zoe Saldana), an "adopted daughter" of Thanos; Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), a literal minded mountain of a man who seeks revenge against Ronan; Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper), a genetically engineered raccoon with a bad temper and a love of guns; and Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), an Ent-like creature who speaks only one line: "I am Groot." The five remain united after their prison break in order to retrieve the orb and keep it away from Ronan.

The basic narrative of Guardians of the Galaxy is the kind of light popcorn fare that comic books (and their spin-off products) can get away with. The plot is riddled with seeming inconsistencies (although I'm sure die-hard fans can explain all the limitations constraining the supposedly all-powerful orb) and a lot of threads are left dangling (presumably for exploration in the already-greenlit sequel). However, the characters develop a nice rapport, the dialogue crackles with wit, and the '70s songs add an element of freshness to the proceedings. The anticlimactic resolution, which relies in part on an unfortunate instance of corny physical humor, is a bit of a letdown but that's often the case with superhero movies, where the journey is more entertaining than the destination.

Visually, the movie overdoses on CGI - it looks a lot like the Star Wars prequels (although director James Gunn has indicated he mixed in so-called practical effects). The two non-humanoid members of the team were created entirely by computer. Groot, the walking tree-like entity whose voice is provided by Vin Diesel, is a triumph of artistry. A similar comment can be made about Rocket, who looks almost like a raccoon… but not quite. The 3-D falls into the "neutral" range of the spectrum in that it neither enhances nor detracts from the overall experience.

With the exception of Lee Pace, whose Ronan isn't as nasty as one might hope for a big, bad villain, the cast is well-chosen. Chris Pratt brings a mix of Han Solo-inspired bravado and Luke Skywalker-influenced heroism to his part. Zoe Saldana, adding green skin to her resume (after having been blue-skinned in Avatar), is effectively tough and conflicted as Gamora and her chemistry with Pratt generates the right amount of heat.

Despite a variety of unresolved narrative elements, Guardians of the Galaxy is sufficiently self-contained to work as a stand-alone film even though the goal is to make this the starting point for a long-running franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy is immersed in a characteristic evident in The Avengers--related movies (but not found in most other major comic book films): irreverence. By not taking anything too seriously, it allows cheesy plot elements to work where they might fail in another context. Guardians of the Galaxy is solid summer fun - not the mammoth epic we have come to expect from each new Marvel release, but a welcome entry into a moribund movie season.

I don't watch mindless dross on the SyFy channel because I take no delight in watching awful films. I sat down to watch this with high expectations because people had told me it was brilliant. It's not brilliant. It's how I imagine those SyFy movies are. Loud, obnoxious, mindless... and boring. The "humour" on offer goes something like this... "I'm a tree. I'm a tree. I'm a tree." This is the only thing one character can say, and it is the punchline of several "jokes" throughout the movie. Joy.

There was no story to speak of. Character development was basically a guy saying "I'm a tree" a lot, oh I give up. I don't want to waste any more time thinking about this abomination of a movie.

If you like mindless nonsense, you'll love this. If you can stomach the **** on SyFy, or heaven forbid actually enjoy that kind of thing, go watch this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am quite critical in general and I did not know what to expect from the movie. I was presently surprised by almost everything. There were some minor issues which made me not rate it at 10/10. But like I said they were minor issues.
The bad:
1. Not really realistic: Yes I know that I should probably not complain after seeing a ridiculous tree creature and a talking raccoon. That is fine but what I am getting at is how overpowered these characters were. Not only were they all masters of combat but they were invincible as well. After the prison escape the movie lost all the suspense.
2. The lack of "real ending". I know that they want to continue to release more movies but at least don't make it that obvious. I have seen many TV-shows and also movies where they wrote that there will be a continuation and then the show is cancelled or the movie was not financially successive.
3. The whole fleet at the end got destroyed, how did the same people manage to survive without a single scratch? One of the most annoying things there was. Not only were the heroes invincible but it seemed that all the "good" guys were also invincible for no apparent reason.
4. The buildup was quite fast, you got thrown into the action almost immediately. It is however good or bad depending on what you like. I would have preferred around 10 minutes longer buildup as it was the first movie in a presumed series.
The good:
Everything else. The actors did an awesome job. The whole story was very good. You got really invested into the characters and that is a good thing. Plenty of funny moments. The effects were also top notch.
It is ridiculous that this movie got a lower rating by the "experts" than star wars episode 7.

The retro soundtrack adds a layer of cool to the movie as well - instead of any hard rock, typical intense soundtrack backgrounds or EDM, we get Earth Wind & Fire, the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and more. There are those moment of movie score in there, but the casette tape-style soundtrack is a tasteful addition that enhances the movie and, just like its characters, adds to the on-screen characteristics of the film. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy plays on the fact that these are absolute no-body's of the comic book universe and evolves them into pop culture idols through vibrant special effects and charming humour from Chris Pratt and Cast.

Evil boss to hero, "What are you doing?"
Hero(dancing on a unheard 80s tune), "I am distracting you."

Guardians of the Galaxy is a fun no-brainer that requires relentless nonsense, snappy banter, a pretty lady, and a lot of cgi to keep you confused. The script follows the-everyone-is-after-a-macguffin-that-is-worth-a-mountain-of-cash formula for first half of the movie, the second half sees the mismatched fortune seekers band together to stop the supreme bad guy from using the macguffin to destroy the galaxy... or was it the universe?
If they would pause to allow you to catch you breath you might start to ask questions, therefore rapid pacing tries to keep you off balance and hopefully entertained. Just like the hero Peter Quill tries to distract main baddie Ronan with a silly dance so he won't see the super duper blaster that Peter's companions are setting up to evaporate him.
It is fun, it is flashy and it works when it does..
At the end of the movie the tale has shot its bolt. With the bad guy gone there is no reason for the group of selfish adventurers to work together and they lack the motive and the personalities to do so. Non of the characters have any depth and the juvenile attempts by Peter Quill to get into the breeches of Gamora is something you do not want to see continued. Perhaps the only person who is marginally interesting is Nebula and she isn't even one of the 'good' guys.
Guardians also suffers by disclosing a public secret: marvel heroes never die. Death is not a requirement but danger becomes meaningless without death or at least some serious injuries. But the heroes shrug of death and injury as if they merely change a shirt.
Guardians is like a firecracker: it makes a lot of fuzz, but once it is spent the fun is over for good.

That alone, and the fact there was a talking raccoon in the trailers had me very hesitant in going to see it. But after hearing how good it was from a few friends I decided to go see it. This movie has such a great soundtrack (if you like 80's music that is) and they also did a perfect job in casting, the acting was pretty awesome. Overall the movie was very well balanced, action and comedy as well as a good story line that kept my attention throughout. Science Fiction is my favorite genre, but I've never been a fan of superheroes, and in fact, ten years ago I would never have even considered seeing a film like Guardians of The Galaxy. On the surface, this looks like a kids movie, but thanks to some fantastic writing and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), as interesting a character as you will ever meet, Guardians of The Galaxy is Science Fiction at it's best. Quill is a thief, nothing more, nothing less. He is hired to steal something and does it the same way he's done hundreds of times before, only this time, there are a bunch of other people trying to take it from him. Quill will come to learn that the item is so very valuable because it is a nearly unstoppable weapon, that the worst men in the universe will stop at nothing to possess. Together with the other renegades, Quill decides the best thing to do is to stop these men and make sure the item is never able to be taken again. Chris Pratt stars and gives the performance of a lifetime. I remember first seeing Pratt in the show Everwood, and thinking that this guy has no personality, amazing how things have changed. Finally able to be himself, Pratt shows that his personality is larger than life itself, and twice now in his young career, he has turned that gift into two of the best characters I've seen in years. Paired with some of Hollywood's brightest young stars, an incredible team of writers, and special effects that are out of this world, Guardians of The Galaxy had all the tools it needed to become the companies biggest earner. This is a film that a lot of people are never going to think of as anything more than a comic book turned into a film for children, but it is so much more than that. From the music to the storyline, to the stars themselves, this film has something for everyone, it was my top film pick of 2014, a must see movie, and something that any true fan of cinema shouldn't miss. The most unique thing to come out of Marvel in years. Guardians of the Galaxy is a blast that everyone should check out.
This new franchise has what looks like enough lore and unique creatures, planets and spaceships to rival that of Star Wars and while maybe not written as tightly as a Star Wars film, this epic is a blast to watch from start to finish.
The films main selling points are the characters and the visual design and universe the film is set in. Our 5 rag tag heroes are so crazily unique and absurd all bursting with their own personality that they flesh out the film themselves; and then added to them is a dozen different races and planets to make their universe exciting. How are these characters unique though? Well, if you haven’t seen the front cover let me explain all characters to you:
Firstly we have Peter Quill a.k.a Starlord, the human of the group. What makes him a quirky and unique character is that he was abducted by aliens in the 80’s and now roams a completely different universe. This comes with him quoting many 80’s film references and pop culture references that he is a hilarious blast to watch, along with his own quick witted personality and charisma. He also then brings lots of 80’s music to life that add to the feel and tone of this sci-fi epic.
Secondly, we have Gamora; admittedly probably the most boring of the group. She is a Green alien who wants to betray her master. Her character acts as the most effective assassin of the group who is very skillful but just comes across as a rather average moral anchor for the characters and potential love interest.
Thirdly, we have Drax the Destroyer. He looks awesome, but is the character with the lowest IQ, not understanding sarcasm, metaphors or anything a little more complex in the English language. He is hell bent on revenge and will stop at nothing to avenge his fallen ones. A simple plot device for him but his idiotic but devoted character makes up for it.
And lastly coming in a pair as they should, are Groot and Rocket; the wackiest bros to come out of Hollywood in forever. Groot is a humanoid like tree, who has regenerative abilities and knows only 3 words; “I am Groot”. He is incredibly tough and will not leave his friends behind no matter what. Rocket on the other hand is a talking racoon that was altered with experimentation and now has an obsession with making explosives and other weaponry. He is also best friends with Groot, and more the voice of the two, although he is a bit of a dick, but he is awesome. These two act as GOTG’s equivalent to Han Solo and Chewbacca.
After taking a step back and looking at the worlds these characters inhabit don’t be surprised if you’re impressed. The visuals are beautiful, with an incredible mix of practical and visual effects (Star Wars episodes 1-2 should’ve taken note) and they are all polished and sleekly made making them feel authentic. After watching the film you want to find out more about this universe.
The only downsides to this movie are the story and the script (at times). The story is a typical people band up together and put differences aside to save a world and a crazy bad guy goes mad with power and so wants to destroy it; nothing new here. Then also the script has a few too many plot conveniences and makes the speed at which all characters suddenly become devoted to each other a little unbelievable, but somehow the chemistry between the group still seems to work well.
Overall, this film is a triumph and well worth the watch. Chris Pratt nails his character and is easily the breakout star of 2014, all other cast members are great and the visuals and lore of this universe and enticing enough to have already warrant itself a sequel, which I’m sure we all can’t wait for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion, this movie is overrated. A lot. I may have only seen 44 minutes of this movie, but, in those 44 minutes, I loathed this movie. The majority of the dialogue is poorly-written, the soundtrack is out-of-place, the scenes transition way too quickly to understand what is going on, and the characters are boring. I assume the boy in the beginning is a young Quinn, however the boy is blond and Chris Pratt has dark hair. The reason I only saw 44 minutes of this movie is because I thought it was so bad I just gave up. I didn't even bother seeing if the movie got better because it was already damaged beyond repair. Now, it did have good special effects, and I liked the songs in the first few scenes, but everything else either made no sense at all, or was poorly-written. The opening title sequence was lousy, as Chris Pratt broke out into dance for no reason other than so the credits could show who made it and who starred in it, and then when the aliens threatened to arrest him for stealing the orb, he looked genuinely shocked. It was his fault for wasting all that time dancing for no reason other than something that is beyond the fourth wall. If you enjoyed this movie, fine. I think kids could get a kick out of this movie, though there are some elements that parents may not like. I, however, could not enjoy this movie at all and didn't even finish it due to how bad it was.

I don't think there were new things that I noticed, but the jokes fell just as well the second time, and it was just as much fun to watch the actions unroll. Bradley Cooper's raccoon is voiced perfectly, and gives some of the funniest lines of the movie, particularly in his interactions with Groot. The visual effects and makeup were all interesting and original and really well done; it was neat to see people in red and green and blue, and I like that they didn't go to any trouble explaining history or dynamics, and leaving the audience to mostly tease out the relevant details for themselves. The ending was a bit predictable in its happy fuzzy feelings and sense of adventure, but it was entirely appropriate to the movie and it worked really well. Guardians of the Galaxy has some of the best aspects of the comic book movie genre in the neat, creative environment of outer space. Super fun. Expand
