Wanted for something to happen somewhere, but had no luck. It only teased me with some sudden loud noises and briskly camera panning away from the characters just what the monster appeared from nowhere, but it didn't. I think the human story and monster's did not synch in with a clean perfect one movie. Humans and monsters were completely parted. At least collision between them would have been very interested, just like the car and helicopter chase in the '98 version.

All the human characters were very weak including army general, the protagonist and his silly mission. I wanted a gutsy person like Stephen Lang, who was excellent in 'Avatar' as a lieutenant colonel. You gonna love the graphic side of the movie, but this story badly misses the rockstar characters like one from Ron Perlman for 'Pacific Rim' and Jean Reno for '98 'Godzilla'. Aaron Johnson was good, but not good enough to handle whole movie himself. The inclusion of another couple of well know actors would have helped better in my opinion. Maybe the surprise entries are kept for a sequel, I guess.

Like any other Godzilla fan, I fought for my ticket that I booked a day earlier and saw on the first day itself. Actually, I enjoyed a lot this movie, but it will never be my favourite Monster movie. 'Favourite' and 'good entertainer' are two different categories. All the good entertainers are not my favourite. Though I cherished this film in a few scenes. Most importantly, this movie making opportunity was landed on the pair of a good hand. I liked 'Monsters', the director shown his caliber in that low budget high quality movie. So I had faith in him, but the thing was he's a documentary style movie maker. I was wondering how this commercial movie gonna shape up. Well, he proved that he can pull the trigger of the bazooka as well. It was visible that he was given freedom to make his way, at least in the majority of the movie.

‘‘Let them fight.’’

Must agree this is the best version according to the appearance of the monster. So the credits must go to all the members of special effects and visual effects team. No doubt stunts were breathtaking. It was a 2 hour movie, in that first half was dragged with human drama that I did not like much. It was drifting away from the main picture. So I was lucky in the exact beginning of the second half where the 'king of the monsters' appears in front of us completely with a huge roar. There's another flying monster in the movie called Muto. This second hour is all about them fighting each other. In a couple of the scenes I was totally disappointed where the fights between them were smartly concealed other than showing us through cable news channels and in few other tricky ways. Well, they saved it for the final battle. I guess it was a little late, but in some way it convinces us to satisfy after a long wait.

During the final battle something did not look good. I thought Godzilla was an animal, suddenly he becomes very intelligent and uses his fire-breath in a particular position to defeat his enemy. That's not at all, walking back to the sea was kind of looked like a Disney's fairy tale concept. Because monsters should behave like one not like one of a Marvel's superhero who concerns for human safety. That is the portion made me think like is it a children's movie? Because I just saw it till the end without aware. That small mistake was one of a drawback in the movie. They desperately wanted it for a sequel and so they did it without harming humans around.

Again the digital 3D was wasted with this movie. It was shot as a regular and converted into digital 3D. There was none pop-outs throughout. Okay, fine, that's not a big deal, but in most of the parts depth of the visuals were weaker, almost plain with too much darker background. I would say there's nothing special offers in this digital 3D version of the movie. Since it is made as a one we must prefer 3D over regular for somewhat better result to get.

There's a generation gap, fighting over different version won't change anything. My favourite version will remain the same and so yours and others. The purpose of all versions is to entertain the audience and so it does. As far now my review was mixed respond with a bit slides toward the negative side. In one line to say what's the wrong with this movie is that human portion of the story was a big letdown, though the vfx tried its best to lift is as much it can.

Overall, I believe repeat viewing this movie won't help us to love it. The first impression is the best, if you got it, then fine, if not, so you must be either '98 or '54 version fan. If you are a Godzilla fan then it is a must see movie whether you like it or not. Put all your faith and take a chance, who knows you may like it better than me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just love the way they casually set off a nuclear device off the coast of San Francisco. That would cause more damage than Godzilla ever did. Too many people, and not enough kaiju. It has been said "a camel is a horse designed by a committee." Way too much "plot:" not nearly enough action. Too much military nonsense (although the "insertion" from 30,000 feet was cool-looking, but not really how they'd do it). And what were those pathetic creatures? The writers couldn't decide if they wanted Rodan or Mothra, so they created a.....bat with a human butt. Gareth Edwards used the same blinking lights he used in "Monsters," (which also could have been a lot better with more monsters and less human "interaction"). Am I the only one who noticed they stole King Kong's nose and facial expressions? They had the opportunity to make a movie using real science to advance the plot (archeologists do keep finding bigger and bigger dinosaurs), but no, they had to go all Hollywood on us and make a movie somebody thought would appeal to the widest audience. And so they got plain vanilla. Not even vanilla bean, just vanilla..... Expand

The movie has great actors supported by Bryan Cranston(breaking bad, malcolm in the middle),Elizabeth Olsen(oldboy, avengers 2),Aaron Johnson(kick ass),they all deliver a magnificent performance ,especially from Bryan Cranston. The human element which most of the movie is hangs onto is fantastic ,you root for these guys ,you care for them, you want them to survive. The story itself is quite gripping and fascinating, constantly innovating, but also remaining a good throwback to the 1954 original, which itself held a very political message with it.

BUUUUUUUT,besides an ultimately intruiguing plot, the reason we all came to the theater is to hear and see the KING OF ALL MONSTERS,GODZILLA.The director utilizes a very smart approach instead of showing him to us all the time, like 1998 Roland Emmerich's film, this movie constantly teases us ,so that when it actually gets to the fight and glory it's all the more energetic, worthwile and MY GOD THE FINAL FIGHT is absolutely worth the price of admission, its just 15 to 16 minutes of pure BADASS,EPIC AND GLORIOUS,battle i have ever seen,in fact when it does get to the ultimate climax it made me clap, now ussualy i am pretty pumped and all anxious when i see action in theaters, but i never clap, this movie made me want to do that, and the whole theater clapped with me ,which made this moment truly amazing because it that much more effective when everyone gets their mind blown and ripped to pieces.

GODZILLA ,is without a doubt a cinematic masterpiece and achievement, its the best example of how to do a proper monster movie:heartful, suspenseful, exciting, teasing and one that pays off very big.
So what the hell are you waiting for go line up and hear the big guy roar.

btw, GODZILLA's the roar is one of the most unique and awesome out there, seriously its really loud.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was very much looking forward to seeing this movie. I waited months and months for it to come out, and being a long-time fan of the Godzilla movies, I felt that a modern version would be definitively worth my money. I was sorely disappointed. Here are my reasons:
- Bryan Cranston is killed off within 15 minutes.
- The rest of the acting is LAUGHABLE at best. His son (Aaron Taylor Johnson) was board-like in his acting: I felt nothing. He has the same emotional range of a potato. The only character with less depth was his wife. Just. Plain. Awful. I could not bring myself to believe anything that they were portraying, and they had no on-screen chemistry.
- You came to see Godzilla in a Godzilla movie? Good luck. He has about 15 minutes (give or take 10 minutes) of screen time. That's it. The first HOUR or so of the movie is Godzilla-less. No Godzilla. None.
- You came to see Godzilla fight? Yeah, right. Three times in the movie does Godzilla fight - The first time is shown on a TV screen and cuts RIGHT BEFORE the fighting actually begins. The second time, the fight scene is cut short AGAIN by doors closing RIGHT BEFORE the fighting actually begins. The last time they fight (to give credit where credit is due) is an actual fight... but its in the last, very last, minutes of the movie.
- All the space before and between the fighting is bland, boring and emotionless planning and dumb subplots.
Save your money. Go rent Pacific Rim.

Godzilla and the Muto are great, the look cool and when they fight it's great, but we don't see much of it, mainly just in the end. The titular character is mostly just treated as a backdrop for the human conflict, which while watching Aaron Taylor Johnson's and Bryan Cranston and their struggle wasn't bad, it wasn't great either. The middle of the movie was pretty boring. We get to see Godzilla for the first time (as in all of him) and right before a huge fight starts, the movie cuts away and we don't see any of it. Ultimately, it's still a good movie but the sequel has a lot of room for improvement if you get what I mean. Expand

But the problem is, that almost everything else feels like a filler because of it. Besides Godzilla and other creatures and their spectacular confrontation, this film has little to offer:
Characters are bland and uninspired, except Bryan Cranston, whose character had at least some emotion behind him. The son (played by Aaron Johnson) who is the main protagonist in the second act of the movie has none of that.. Mind as well be a faceless brick...
The film can be just split into three parts: first, containing Cranston is actually an engaging character study and mystery plot. After Cranston leaves the movie, interest starts to fall apart, mainly because of dull characters and the anticipation of Godzilla. Human drama wasn't important to me, because these people had no emotional weight to it (except the first act).
The third act is actually hurt after all that tedious teasing in the second act, but it is still enjoyable and is the highlight of the movie. This part saves the film from being a complete disaster.

I agree with everyone who says there wasn't enough screen time for the big guy. But they are better off leaving the audience wishing for more, rather than having people feel they got an overdose. There will certainly be an appetite for a sequel. I would love to see a tie-in with Pacific Rim one day. Expand

Alas, the lack of an inspired screenplay wiped all of these pros clean off the table and left this as a mediocre monster flick with severely underdeveloped characters. The talent was there! Yet, the main character (Johnson) had "motivation" that felt forced and his character's arc was practically non-existent! Bryan Cranston was sadly underused and could have been more interesting given more screen time. Ken Watanabe and his team served absolutely no purpose to the plot, as he just follows the monster around with his mouth open in awe of the creature the whole time. The more I think about what the characters were "doing" the more angry I get and the less I like the movie because I feel like every human character wasted my time. The film also took itself way too seriously, and lacked any sense of humor or fun. (see Pacific Rim) The intention was well put in this reboot... but in the end, the script was not there. I really really wanted to like this movie, but was left sadly disappointed. Sad times.

This is the first negative review I've forced myself to write because of how false leading the movie and adds are.

You wont' see Byran Cranston more than 25 minutes after the movie starts cause he dies, and not only has one of the worst deaths ever, but his son completely ignores his fathers death without a single word bout it the entire movie, but instead continue on with the crappy story.

They also spend 7/10 of the movie talking about and locating these Creatures taht feed off nuclear waste.

I didn't expect this movie to be realistic, but it's so unrealisatic and there'es so many crappy plot holes I was surprised they released it, espeically ecause 99% of the scenes seem drawn out and add absolutley nothing to the story.
Atleast great, and I do mean great action tries to help save this film, but it only comes in the lsat 15-20 minutes and by then it's way too late.

Also why the hell does Godzilla create a Tsanmi when hes coming (durriing Hawaia), but the next 5 times doesnt cause any
I could desect this video into a millin pieces.
his is the biggest disappointment I've ever all year. Perhps worst movie of the year.
Not only is Godzilla a cameo in his own film, they show his villian (not oe of his recognizable villians) atleast 5 times more then they do him.

If you wanna see 10 minutes of fighting watch the final 20 minutes, that's the only part of the film worth watching. Watch it and you'll see what I mean. I wanna justify spending money on seeing it the day it released ,bu It really can't. This film was **** terrible.r
BTW I love Byran Cranston, he dies within 25 minutes of the film.

Worst ofThe new GODZILLA is one more overproduced bore-fest produced for one reason--to exploit the past and make tons of money. At least with some remakes, the filmmakers pretend to have a point or at least a somewhat new point of view. Worst of all, this big budget fiasco is simply no fun. Something one can't say of the original or the multitude of Japanese sequels. And two questions, why cast fine actors like Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche, Elizabeth Olson, and Sally Hawkins, and then give them nothing to do? Second, the budget of GODZILLA is about $200 million and yet, they can't even get Cranston a half way decent wig for his 10 minutes of screen time? You know a film is in trouble when you're noticing wigs. But anything beats looking at the murky cinematography made even muddier by the perfunctory 3D. Expand

The last ten or twenty minutes would make a good intro to a good Godzilla movie. This, while not being the worst Godzilla movie, certainly not worse than the 1996 one, is certainly not one of the better ones. Three big things are wrong withThe last ten or twenty minutes would make a good intro to a good Godzilla movie. This, while not being the worst Godzilla movie, certainly not worse than the 1996 one, is certainly not one of the better ones. Three big things are wrong with it. The first is that Godzilla is depicted not as the terrifying embodiment of the atomic threat and enemy of both sides but rather as a somewhat apathetic superhero and defender of mankind. This has been done in a lot of Godzilla movies and it has never been much good. At the end for instance, when Godzilla defeats the monsters in San Fransisco, he goes to sleep. If this were a good godzilla movie he would rampage on and level San Fransisco, but this is superhero Godzilla so he takes a nap and then heads off into the sea.

Second, the humans do nothing and can do nothing. I'd also point out they are uninteresting, but in order for them to be interesting in any Godzilla movie they need some sort of potency. They need to be capable of affecting the monsters. Most Godzilla movies also have impotent humans, but then most Godzilla movies aren't that great. Humans take up a ton of screen time in this version and they are boring as hell. Godzilla won't hurt them because he's in superhero mode, so we aren't really scared for them and they can't hurt any of the monsters. They humans essentially do nothing. I'm almost convinced they added in the whole monster eggs sub plot just to give the main character something to do. And I still don't know his name!

Lastly, too little screen time for Godzilla. There are theoretically two or three times that there could have or should have been a monster fight scene in the move but where instead the camera just cuts away. A lot of people compare this to Jaws and talk about building tension. The problem here is that we see plenty of footage of the monsters who kill people. Godzilla just isn't one of them. He's not Jaws, he's superman and a superman movie with about ten minutes of superman in it just at the end is kinda terrible. It's exacerbated by the fact that instead of Godzilla footage we have scene after scene about the human characters who nobody can care about and who cannot possibly have any affect on the plot.

On the bright side, this is the best-looking Godzilla movie of all time. One shot of Godzilla literally riding a tsunami had me convinced for a second that this movie was about to get awesome. Also, San Fransisco gets torn apart, so at least it has a happy ending. There are a lot of smaller technical and plot related issues. I honestly think Toho was just thrilled to finally have a great budget for a Godzilla flick and let the Americans decide the plot points. Rent it on Netflix or something but seeing it in theaters is kind of a waste of money. My theater has really comfy seats though so I still enjoyed it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ve to start off by saying a couple simple things. **** the haters...**** them right in their asses". Now that I've got that off my chest, I can write this review. Also don't read if you don't want to read spoilers.

This movie is amazing in every way. Like Alex Maverick said "it's almost like Jaws". It builds the suspense of Godzilla coming and uses distraction as well. The people saying Godzilla wasn't in it enough need to just shut the **** up. Seriously, were we watching the same movie? The movie created this sense of how? Godzilla was destroying the nuclear plant that's eventually kills Brian's wife in the movie. We later find out it's the monster Godzilla will be hunting down the entire movie. This was pretty much what the movie was. A predator hunting down its prey. People also had the criticism of how it jumped around too much. It was about giant ****ing monsters that were trying to consume nuclear waste. It's not like there's ****ing nuclear waste just siting in one area.

The critics seem to be getting more snobby by the minute. If you don't like this movie, then simply you don't like the character of Godzilla. This was a perfect version of what a Godzilla movie should be. If you don't like Godzilla...then you have no right to comment then. You are just simply not liking the movie because of the character is quite childish to me. I'm looking at you Geoff Pevere. I don't care if you don't. Like the character...just don't be a jackass and make a movie rotten because you're a pretentious prick.

Some of the critics reviews were "Godzilla is a secondary character to his own movie". Like I said before, but let elaborate why this idea ****ing makes me made. Godzilla has a screen time of about forty five minutes and that's plenty of time. We see when he has too much screen time and the filmmaker runs out of things for the creature to do (the 98 version is a prime example). What did the critics expect from this movie. Mindless action of two beasts fighting the whole time? Didn't you hate when transformers just had a bunch of mindless action with robots? Or monsters fighting robots? The answer is yes.. It's sad that character development of the people around the beast and Godzilla himself, is classified as boring. So basically the critics are being pretentious and childish snobs.

The other man argument is that they killed Walter White off too soon and kick ass isn't a strong enough actor to be the lead...well I'm going to call your bluff and raise you another **** you. First of all. Godzilla is the lead and none of the humans were leads at all. They were simpler there to not have mindless action and also to have the audience to relate to someone. Also, he's a perfectly fine in the rule. "He's not a storm enough actor". Like I said "he's not suppose to steal the show" and what did you want out of the guy for Christ sake? I do wind Brian was in the movie more, but this doesn't hurt the movie that much. Critics sometimes to to just hide in their caves they live in and literally such their mouths.

The movie wasn't perfect by any means. It had a few plot holes, but they weren't major. When going into a movie called Godzilla, you do wish there was a little more fighting scene with Godzilla, but to me the fighting scenes were epic. It would have been too much like Man of steels ending if you would have Godzilla fighting for too long. Also the end scenes when he kills the last creature is ****ing epic. It's one of most epic scenes I've ever seen in movie history. It actually had me saying out loud "holy **** **** yeah". Overall it's one of the easiest 10/10 I could give to a movie. 2014 was saved by GBH and is now a success because of this move. 9.6.10.

After each bad review that I read, I looked at said reviewer's OTHER reviews. I found "perfect ten" ratings on well known bad movies like R.I.P.D., or Battleship. Honestly, this movie was reviving the style of the 1954 original. It's much more about the message than the "mediocre acting," or the "boring plot." (Which isn't) Not only that, but if you're not some neanderthal of a moviegoer, you will be enthralled by the plot, and the final battle puts movies like Pacific Rim to shame. Expand

Yawn. If you like special effects, go. If you like stories, look elsewhere. Does not live up to the hype. The special effects are seamless. But the script is the standard monster-movie schlock. Predictable and smarmy.

Unfortunately for this film it spent a LOT of time on the humans and trying to make me care about them in some way, but it failed at that. Furthermore it has the 100% typical Hollywood action/disaster/monster movie plot, so there were absolutely no surprises or unexpected twists in that department. Some sequences just seem like they were straight up ripped from other, better, movies. Brian Cranston does a decent job of acting but the only other people involved in the making of this movie who weren't phoning it in were the special effects team. Godzilla is good when he's on screen, but that's only for like 15 or 20 minutes or so, and you have to sit through the whole rest of the movie to get there.

My advice is to:
1. Stay home and watch Pacific Rim, Jurassic Park, or one of the Japanese Godzilla movies.
2. Wait for this to come out on DVD so you can watch it with RiffTrax on or fast-forward past all the boring parts (there will be a lot of fast-forwarding).

My favorite is still the original Japanese version (Gojira) and although I never thought I would say this, the 1998 version was better in many ways. A lot of the acting in the 1998 version was downright silly, especially the “love story,” but one thing that movie did was exploit New York as a setting and that was fun to watch – Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. In this current version, Honolulu and Las Vegas could have been almost anywhere (we saw a lot of American tourists and some slot machines) and San Francisco was totally wasted (don’t they have hills there?). Also much was made of having quality actors like Juliette Binoche, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Olsen, but you don’t see them very much (don’t blink or you will miss Binoche entirely) and a lot of what the others do is silly or insipid. On the other hand, we see much too much of Aaron Taylor-Johnson who looks dazed and confused most of the time (a hero he ain’t -- not that he runs away, but mostly he is either complaining or being ineffectual). I thought the monsters were good, and so were their battle scenes – and yes, the idea was good, but really do you want to go to a serious Godzilla film? The audience applauded when Godzilla finally breathed fire, but the applause at the end was tepid. In many ways, I found this film unimaginative and mediocre. Expand

(if you can hang with that you'll enjoy the film) This is the film I was waiting for since 3D modeling and the movies got together. As a fan of giant monster movies since I was a kid I was waiting expectantly for this film since I saw the trailer and it definitely is the best Godzilla movie ever!

Having seen it on opening day I can testify that the audience had a great time. My only wish list would be in the future - more monster - less military. This film takes awhile to get going, like a lot of other (superhero) franchise films, it needs to lay down a solid foundation for the many sequels still to come - Whoo Hoo!! ( man am I getting tired of Spiderman, Superman, Transformers, etc over and over - giant dinosaurs destroying cities much more fun!) You know you're going to be seeing those sequels so you might as well go to the local IMAX, strap on your glasses and have some fun with Godzilla this weekend. Note - this film is rated PG and although there are scenes that might scare small children - lots of destruction - there is virtually no gratuitous violence - which means its fine for kids over 13. It follows in the tradition of the Japanese movies nicely. Exciting, funny at times, with a decent supporting story - if you're a Godzilla fan - you'll enjoy it!

Yeah that one fight scene that lasted 3 minutes was good. Godzilla was a creature that apparently existed for a thousand years ? And no one ever discovered it until the last century ? Instead of having a clever nuclear sub plot where a lizard is mutated, which was made to symbolize the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings, but no. The ending was just stupid, basically Godzilla just apparently is cheered for saving the city, even though he destroyed it as well *cough Man of Steel cough*. 3/10 Expand

Directed - Gareth Edwards

In 1954 the Toho Film Company made a picture about a huge dinosaur-like monster that rampaged through Tokyo. It was only 93 minutes long but it spawned a legend that has lasted 60 years and 28 (Japanese) films. I am, of course, referring to the colossus that is Godzilla.

Fast forward to 2014 and the newest incarnation of the world's most famous kaiju. Godzilla is an icon and the director, Gareth Edwards, had a mammoth task to overcome; how to bring the monster into the 21st Century without angering the fans.

The film begins with some original opening credits; words are redacted before the viewers' eyes, leaving only the names of the cast. This plays out over footage, supposedly from the 1950s, showing radars, military personnel and, finally, a large nuclear explosion at Bikini Atoll (the first of many references to actual events and /or classic Godzilla movies ).

We jump to 1999 and meet Dr. Ichiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) who is investigating the skeleton of a large, prehistoric creature found in the Philippines. Then we zoom over to Japan where Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) is concerned about the nuclear plant where he works. Disaster obviously ensues and what follows is a sequence reminiscent of the Fukushima disaster which occurred only a few years ago.

And now we are up to date. Joe's son, Ford, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is happily living in San Francisco with his wife (Elizabeth Olsen) and young son.

At this point I would like to say that I was slightly disturbed at watching these two young actors playing lovers as, in my head, they are the Maximoff siblings (I know, I know, it's not real but I can still have my opinion).

Father and son are eventually reunited and that's where the action really begins.

Cranston is brilliant as a father who feels like he has lost it all; both traumatised and unhinged in equal measure. Watanabe is the yin to Cranston's yang; calm and collected to a point where some of his dialogue is barely above a whisper.

The younger actors; Taylor-Johnson and Olsen, are not as strong in their roles. Olsen is not given much to do except cry and run. In fact, one downside of this movie is that there is a distinct lack of strong female characters.

Taylor-Johnson has a larger part to play but he doesn't quite fulfil the leading man role. He isn't entirely convincing as an action star but neither plausible as desperate family man. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a good actor but he wasn't given enough to work with. The script is basic with Cranston's impassioned ranting (heard in the trailer) as the only stand out part.

But to most, it isn't the human cast that people care about. Does the 2014 version of Godzilla make the grade? In short, yes. He bears a resemblance to the original creature but without the look of a rubber suit. You could believe that there is a dinosaur-like monster out there. As you have probably gathered from the many trailers, Godzilla isn't the only kaiju in the movie but I will leave what they are, and why they are there, as a surprise.

And then there is THAT roar. Spine tingling with a bass deep enough to turn your internal organs to mush, perfect.

At several points in the film, just as the audience thinks it might be treated to a monster smackdown, the focus is always pulled back to the less interesting human story. However, the final battle is worth waiting for, if not a little short. Gareth Edwards has held enough back for the inevitable sequel (pending box office results).

There are small niggles here and there but I was always a fan of the King of Monsters (another classic reference) and there is enough here to remind us of the creature we fell in love with.

Bonus points if you spot the reference to another kaiju which appears in the first half of the film.

Rating - 7/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This has become my favorite movie of the year so far. This is exactly how a monster movie should be. It was realistic, it was intense, it had my jaw on the floor for some scenes.

Let's start with the story. Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) loses his wife (Juliette Binoche) in a giant power plant earthquake but what the public doesn't know is that it wasn't an earthquake at all but a giant cave in where a giant monster known simply as a MUTO has hidden itself in a cocoon for 14 years since that day and is now being hidden away in a fake quarantine zone. Once the monster escapes it's left up to the only other thing big enough, Godzilla, to take it down.

Now I took into account that this is a giant monster movie and for a plot to be something pretty simple like that is perfectly okay with me simply for one reason, the execution of the story is done in a way that I feel as though this is how it would go down if there were giant monsters roaming earth.

Now the acting. Bryan Cranston just kills it in this role. In the scene where his wife died I believed he was truly sad. All around an amazing performance which makes it kind of heartbreaking since he's only in the movie for maybe 20-25 minutes and then just dies leaving us with the rest of the story to be told through his son, Aaron Taylor Johnson. I'll be honest I think I would've liked it better if Cranston had stayed alive and like helped back at the headquarters that was monitoring everything but that's just me. I say this because Aaron's character just feels a little one dimensional to me. Like he didn't have enough character. I cared more about seeing his wife (Elizabeth Olsen) stay alive than him and she's off somewhere hiding while he's risking his life trying to diffuse a bomb to save thousands of people. Elizabeth Olsen does a great job playing the wife in trouble and Ken Watanabe is great as always.

The CGI. I'm just going to run through this one fast because this is something I don't focus on a ton in movies but I was told how amazing the CGI in this was so I knew I'd have to focus on it for this and talk about it. The CGI for the monsters is just beyond incredible, Godzilla just looked all around great and I loved every moment that I got to see him and the MUTOs. Now as for the scenery I felt it was a little lacking, I don't know just when I see those buildings fall apart I had a harder time believing I was actually seeing buildings get destroyed. That's all I really have to say on CGI.

Now for our main man, The King Of Monsters himself. Godzilla. I had a few nitpicks in everything but this guy right here is the reason this movie got a full 10/10 from me. To describe him in one word, Epic. Just all around epic. His grand reveal sent chills down my spine and left my heart racing 10 minutes after the scene had ended. Every time that roar came out I just melted with pure nostalgia and love. This is exactly what I want Godzilla to be. He's not a "hero" he's not an "enemy" he's just an animal trying to take out things he feels threatened by. He didn't attack humans, only if they attacked him and even then it seemed like he didn't purposely try to hurt them. He seemed more scared than angry. I feel he doesn't attack humans simply because well... they're humans. They're no threat to him, they tried to drop nuclear bombs on him and he just walked it off. He fights the MUTOs because they're a threat to him. They want him dead and have the strength to back it up. The fight sequences between Godzilla and the MUTOs are something out of your childhood dreams. He throws these things around into buildings and the second you see his tail turn blue you just get this amazing feeling in your stomach because you know what's coming. ATOMIC BREATH!! Me and my friend saw Godzilla grab the larger MUTO's jaw and we said how we thought he was gonna break it's jaw and it was going to be awesome but what does he do? He freaking uses his laser breath and shoots it down the MUTO's throat until it's head falls off. My jaw was on the floor out of sheer amazement at this sight.

In conclusion Godzilla is a great movie with nice acting, good effects, and one bad ass monster. A definite must see for any Godzilla fan or fan of monster movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To go in with tempered expectations is wise here. This is by no means a bad movie, but for how long the movie was compared to how little we saw Godzilla, I was left wanting more and feeling somewhat robbed. That being said, the scenes Godzilla WAS in (chiefly those near the end) were some of the best I've seen on the big screen in quite some time. The reason my score is a 5, however, has more to do with the awful cliched bits forced in throughout the movie. I realize this movie was a big nod to the Godzilla movies of old (which was, admittedly, well done) but that doesn't mean we can't have character development and deeper plots than: hero soldier torn from wife and child and does heroic deeds only to be reunited with them against all odds. Sadly are left with 10 minutes of awesome Godzilla footage and an hour and 50 minutes of shallow, plotless nonsense. To cap it all off, the money maker, Brian Cranston, is on screen for about the same amount of time as Godzilla... why even cast him at all if not to lure Breaking Bad fans into theaters if you're not even going to give him ample time to help drive the plot? Couple of surprises, couple of annoying teases, and a whole lot of blah. Redeeming qualities - excellent sound effects, and for the most part, visual effects aren't too bad either. Not worth IMAX 3D, but still noteworthy. It took a while to get used to, but I like the new look of Godzilla. So what, Japan, he looks fat... Godzilla went to the U.S., and was chillin' in Frisco, ordering the Supersize meals from Mickey D's. He'll lose the weight after swimming back to Japan. On a more serious note - this film IS better than: Godzilla 1998, and Godzilla vs. King Kong. That's it. The movie's flaws are numerous. Once again I will not go into spoilers, but there are several let-downs, numerous holes, and a couple of oddities that are senseless to have in a Godzilla film. This film is not shockingly embarrassing like 1998, but it is fairly disappointing to this Godzilla fan. You could hear everyone gasp or even start clapping during certain scenes due to just how "godzilla-like" they were. A good mix of modern story telling and scents of the old school monster we all know and love.
The story is what you can expect but its not terrible either. The characters are ones we've seen before and Bryan Cranston was not utilized enough. My only real complaint is that the directer teases you the entire movie with Godzilla ready to fight but would always cut away. I can understand a tactic like that if you were to give a epic battle during the grand finale but it never really happens.

I hope Toho pulls the licensing for any sequels .I could go on and on but the more I think about it the madder i get so you have been warned Expand

Honestly, it seemed two of us liked it while two thought that it lacked in areas. Let me start by saying, I liked it. It was no Pacific Rim, thank God, because i was so expectant for that movie and it was a major disappointment to me. This movie however, was more like a disaster movie, rather than a monster movie. I was a little disappointed that Godzilla was not in very many scenes, but afterward, I thought about it and talked with friends and I realized I was kind of glad because then it would have simply been another Pacific Rim. Only it would have been Kaiju fighting Kaiju. Godzilla looked awesome! On that, we all agreed. The acting suffered a bit but the storyline was interesting. overall, I enjoyed the look and feel of the movie. It's what a summer movie should be, loud, exciting, and intense! Expand

Godzilla, the King of Monsters himself, ladies and gentlemen, shows up for about 20 minutes of screen time in this 123 minute clunker. Much of the film is padded out by boring, BORING, super-one-dimensional characters and their boring friends and family: specifically Ford Brody (can't act), Joe Brody (can't act) and Elle Brody (for God's sake, woman, eat a hamburger!) This movie shouldn’t have been called “Godzilla.” It should’ve been called “The Brody’s” or “Ford Looks Up Stupidly with his Mouth Half-Hung Open for Ninety Minutes While the Audience Texts and Moans Audibly with Boredom.”

This film is a serious disappointment, as I love the Godzilla series, King Kong, and Kaiju movies. Do you know who else loves all these wondrous repositories of imagination? The great Guillermo de Toro. Please, please do yourself a favour and go see the much superior and joyous "Pacific Rim" instead. Seriously, go and watch it. *There* is a movie that honours Godzilla, and handles the material properly: with love.

I'll also drop the word !!!Kaiju!!! in this review so you know I have a diploma on my wall from Toho University.

Whether it's a Japanese or American film, boring side-plots have always been an issue in Godzilla movies. They don't contribute to character development, building tension, or serve as (useful) plot devices. They are just something you suffer through before getting to the good stuff. This movie has very little good stuff. Even when the monster fight scenes were happening they seemed slow and didn't pack the same punch as other movies.

Using my super awesome research abilities I have calculated the ratio of awesome monster action to boring filler, which is reflected in my rating.

Science.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went to my local cinema who had just received 3D and i watched what i though was going to be one of the better movies of the year. I don't know why i got myself hyped up so much because i just feel even further, so here is my review of Godzilla. Let's start with the acting with Johnson as our lead he really doesn't say much..at all, and when he does speak it is literally five words- now this didn't bother me too much just it did get annoying. Wantanabe provided a decent performance and he didn't say much either, heck pretty much nobody said much in this film, i think the only person who said anything more than five words was Cranston who was axed before the 30 minute mark. Now we move onto the CGI, and boy it was impressive, no flaws and actually quite convincing, except for maybe the flood scene, even so i am glad to see that the money went to the department that is needed the most in a film like this. Now onto the writing, what can you expect from a monster film, poor writing and not the greatest explanation for a story, the film itself was so predictable and so stereotypical it wasn't even funny, i just feel the movie could have been better if the writers (who also wrote Doom and The Expendables) could have put some more effort into their work. Now i come to the final and most important component, the action and it really did work, it was perfect, Godzilla's reveal- perfect, the fight scene in Hawaii- awesome and final battle in San Fransisco, well it was a little bit overdone but still i can bypass that and say with confidence that this remake was better than the 1998 version. I highly recommend you watch Godzilla as it is awesome just not a great film therefore it receives a 6/10. Expand

More than half of the movie revolves around humans not the movie. The director should have done a family drama instead of Godzilla. The world's most loved monster got few screen times. All fights between Godzilla and two mutants were cut at times.

Hollywood has once again taken a classic story and made it all about America. The trailers looked amazing but the reality of the film is a Greys Anatomy type want to be tear jerker about a family who is torn apart.

It was like someone said "hey, lets make an awesome Godzilla trailer, with all the best parts of the movie and then pad the movie out with lots of daytime tv quality acting and script writing to save money. Also, lets put heaps of Bryan Cranston in the clip but only get him on set for 6 weeks to get enough shots for a trailer because that will sell tickets. People love Bryan Cranston. He's so hot right now."

The problem is that the set up of the characters relationships isn't substantial enough, and you just don't care. I wasn't worried for the well being of the characters, and didn't really care what was happening to anyone in the cities. There were no moments when my heart was beating faster or where I gripped by bag of popcorn even slightly.

As others have said, watch Cloverfield again. That was a real monster movie.

In a polar opposite of the lighthearted rendition 16 years ago, Godzilla is now radioactively gloomy, bringing a more nuclear oriented plot. It opens well with good human interaction for first half, but sadly the momentum dies down in lieu of gargantuan fight, which is somewhat acceptable and expected just by looking at the title.

The cast looks a bit stumbled with the sparse dialogue and repetitive scenes. Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Ford Brody does look the part of a marine with ancient history with unnatural disaster. He carries himself decently until the last act where he stares into the ruins or eyes of behemoth far too often. Ken Watanabe is utterly underutilized, channeling Mark Wahlberg from The Happening. He seems so confused the entire time, even at ordinary moments, and at rare scenes where he's given script, his role is reduced to giving catchphrases.

Bryan Cranston as Ford's father does a fine performance setting the somber tone at first half. His part is by far the most emotional one; it's a good set-up for the reveal and sells the menace of the creature. The movie works by building the anticipation and not prematurely showcasing the giant, although in some scenes the story progress is told by exposition, either by news or reports. It makes the encounters feel rather cut short, it could've used more visual delight before switching gear to next sequence.

Graphic has more somber atmosphere, at later parts the movie even embraces horror vibe, completely with eerie humming. The drab color palette adds more terror, there's little quizzical tone to be had here. While it's not as colorful as the recent monster movie Pacific Rim, the theme holds consistently. Effects are put to good use; unworldly battles are done with powerful impact. Camera angles often tease the massive beast, occasionally focusing on its scale or eye to enhance the size. Contrasting color, with each passing setting, delivers the solemn ambiance.

There is discrepancy while the story moves forward, human interaction is increasingly reduced towards the end. The movie could've maintained the relationship, but it is certainly lacking at last act. No amount of child actors put in dire situations, and one dog, can bait more sympathy from audience. Script itself is lacking, often leaving the characters glaring emotionless to the screen. A bit coincidence or plot luck is also at played to fit Ford Brody to the scenes, which understandable in disaster movie. Regardless of the flaws, Godzilla serves as a colossus carnage leaving destruction on its wake but not on the original material.

Unfortunately, the scenes of destruction don't occur until about halfway through the film and Bryan Cranston doesn't appear for long. Also, much of the film is shot at night so it's very difficult to see the mayhem created, so don't bother with seeing this in 3D as the images will be rendered useless. The build-up to the tension is extremely long so you might be bored by the exposition where only Cranston out of all the humans characters, injects energy. One also wonders if this movie should be called "Muto" because these creatures seem to feature more in the film than Godzilla. It doesn't matter what the critics say anyway because "Godzilla" will still be a huge international box office hit. Expand

I first have to compliment the engaging human element that was lacking and reduced to downright embarrassment in the horrid first American reboot in 1998. While despite Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character dragging at times, he still manages to be a tolerable lead along with his talented supporting cast, especially since the original Godzilla films never had acting as a strong suit. The screenplay was gratifyingly reminiscent of previous Godzilla installments as well; while not being the most ideally written it's still effective enough to grip the attention span with its serious feel. The score for the film composed by Alexandre Desplat, has an old school Akira Ifukube vibe to it, paying reverence to the great Godzilla anthems of old, while injecting an additional neoteric feel that helps set the dark tone for the film. This gives each scene an extra ounce of thrilling tension. Now, as for Godzilla himself, he is seen for a limited time in his own film which was not necessarily a bad thing. Gareth Edwards' incessant build-up and teases work like a charm to make the audience crave more of the big guy (who is designed into his most intimidating incarnation to date), and more of his terrifyingly alluring parasitic foes. With that being said, the film culminates with one of the most awe-inspiring and jaw-dropping giant monster smack downs to ever be graced on screen. The nearly impeccable CGI in this film make the fight scenes seem even more unparalleled to anything that any Godzilla movie or action movie has ever delivered before.

Overall, this is a welcoming return for the king of the monsters and a commendable attempt by director and fellow Godzilla fan, Gareth Edwards at delivering an awesome reboot to the fans and breathing new life into a storied franchise.

Story: 7/10 Decent
Acting: 7/10 Decent (10/10 Amazing for Bryan Cranston)
Spectacle: 10/10 Amazing

Overall Score: 9/10 Great
Verdict: Go see it if you like epic disaster movies or monster carnage

A brand new start and also an homage to previous Godzilla movies, this new film combines the best of disaster epics and monster brawls in one package deal, yet seems to forget a few things behind when portraying the human story underneath it all (but who wanted to watch this movie for the human story?). The beginning plot with Joe (portrayed by Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad" fame) witnessing the traumatic effects of (what's soon to be revealed as) giant dormant monsters and desperately wanting to find answers, is really interesting and gets you emotionally invested in the non-monster side of the film. Sadly, the trailer shows almost all of Cranston's scenes because he dies as a result of the carnage from the first monster debut at about 45 minutes into the film. This is pretty sad, as his acting stands leagues ahead of everyone else in the film. In his wake, we're left with following his son Ford (played by former Kick-Ass, Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who while believable as a emotionally-damaged son and still caring father and husband to his own family, comes off as wooden and emotionless in scenes where he's confronted with the brutality of kaiju destruction. He seems to forget the urgency and danger of what's happening except in scenes where he reminds others of it. Ken Watanabe plays the lead expert on Godzilla, part of a secret corporation whose main goal is to study the monster since its discovery in the 1950s, yet always seems to have a strained confused look on his face when looking at... well... anything. While the corporation is worldwide, his role seems to be there for two reasons: 1) to be the token Japanese guy because this is a Godzilla movie and 2) to be the only one in the story who (like the audience) wants the American military to back off and let the monsters duke it out. "Let them fight!"

Enough about the humans... GODZILLA AND MONSTERS! Like a true Godzilla film, this isn't just a disaster film about a giant monster rampaging through civilization. Godzilla is the strangely-accepted solution to dealing with OTHER monsters. We're introduced to 2 giant bug-like MUTO (massive unidentified terrestrial organism), one male and one female, who have awoken from their dormancy to begin mating season in San Francisco. These big beasties love radiation and emit EMP-like signals that thwart all major military equipment within range. With both a first round in Honolulu between the male MUTO and Godzilla, and the main 2v1 battle in San Francisco, too much of the monster fighting action is portrayed in the background, watched second-hand on TV screen, or quickly cut-away from to the human story. Only at the end, do we get to see full-on unadulterated monster-on-monster-on monster action, which makes the entirety of the movie worth it, especially with Godzilla's secret weapon and finishing move. That scene is almost worth the price of your movie ticket on its own.

In summary, "Godzilla" is a film that returns to formula on monster movies. While it take a while to get the story going (about 40 minutes), gets rid of its best actor too quickly, and later peppers in a bit too much human story when the monster action is at its peak, it's still a great popcorn flick that's worth it for anyone who's been hungry for a truly epic movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Someone has been studying his Spielberg, and he gets an A.

This is less about the destruction wrought by monsters [although there is plenty of that] as much as the appearance of monsters: out of the mist, the water, the sky, the earth, as they march, or fly, or erupt into view. The protagonist doesn't act as much as react [and in a nod to Jaws, one of a number of references to other science fiction/monster movies, he is named Brody] and many shots are framed from his literal view point, from behind, his person small against a huge background.

The movie takes its time: in one memorable scene, four soldiers need to check a railroad bridge, two walking on top and two below. Even if it weren't 3D the railroad ties are far apart, the view down below vertiginous. When one of them drops his flashlight, we follow it all the way down from the top, and then cut to it almost hitting one of the two below. A quiet minute or so of sheer suspense. Of course, they radio back that it's safe to come across, only to have a flaming engine [see burning train from War of the Worlds] coming straight at them, followed by a point of view from underwater, in which you see Brody, having jumped from the bridge, break the surface, the glowing train right behind him.

The sound design in exquisite: several times cables give way and snap with a twang of menace, and of course the creatures bellow much more loudly than anything in Jurassic Park [thank you IMAX speakers. if the glass of water on the dash board vibrated in Jurassic, this time your seat vibrates]

A reference to Aliens is the hand held motion devices, and for an extended, beautiful paratrooper jump, with long orange smoke trails against a deep blue sky, the sound cue is the same one Kurbick used for the approach to the monolith in the Moon excavation.

I wasn't so much scared as delighted, and I had a big grin on my face throughout. I kept thinking, WOW, someone really took the time and the trouble to get every detail right. There were no bombastic "Today we are cancelling the apocalypse! " moments, just a father separated from his wife and son, wondering whether he may be called to give his life one minute, or the next, or the next.

I first heard of this film from James Rolfe some months ago; since then I've been waiting anxiously for it's release date, hoping that it would justify all the hype I had built.
And it didn't disappoint, in fact it delivered more than I expected. Now, I want to clarify that I'm no Godzilla expert and my limited knowledge of this cult originates from the vision of Godzillathon, but I don't think I would exaggerate if I said that this movie is probably one of the best in the entire saga.

While the first half of the film may be a little slow paced for some people, it does a good job at introducing the characters and developing the plot.

The constant interruption of the fight between the monsters was clever: it made me crave for more and more and the tension I had accumulated was slowly killing me , but it paid off in the end.

The last 20 minutes were epic, and really explain why Godzilla is the "King of the monsters". Sure, some may complain that, for a movie titled Godzilla, 20 minutes of screen time aren't enough, but I'd rather have 20 minutes of an intense and well done fight, than 2 hours of:"Oh look explosions and destruction and other random stuff!"

The human element of the movie sadly falls a little short, and Godzilla does not grace the film with his presence that much, but his scenes are amazing and I'm only sad because the movie would have been even more amazing with more of him.

There are also plenty of scenes that focus on the main characters while the rampage is occurring and that let's you appreciate the scope of the action.

The only person who needed more screen time in this film was Brian Cranston.

Aaron Taylor Johnson left something to be desired though. The monsters are well done and the cgi is heavily used but to good effect. There is plenty of action for those looking for it, and a great buildup to the final showdown. Overall, this one gets a 9 out of 10 from me. Expand

That being said, I felt I was in good hands as the director teased me and built intensity towards a worthwhile payoff in the final act. Kaiju filmmakers will always have to ask their audiences for a leap of faith on certain plot points and securing top talent to carry the majority of films during monster rampages isn't easy. I applaud the efforts in this latest reincarnation and would happily see it again. Expand

Godzilla is the kind of movie in which you can submerge and let everything go. Its candy for our imagination. Epic in every way, and at the same time every frame could be exhibited as a painting in any gallery over the world. Having seen Gareth Edwards most famous previous work "Monsters", i knew i wasn't going to be disappointed. Now i can say i have seen Godzilla, the King of all Monsters, in its full glory. Just like this movie is now the King of all Fine-Arts-Blockbusters. Expand

As a lifelong, 30+ year fan of everything Godzilla, I can not help but feel disappointed in what we have been presented after 5 years of anticipation and Hype.

First of all, Godzilla himself is glorious! The MUTOs look great, but I am still unsure of exactly they are supposed to be. They are imaginative yes, but I am unsure how such an alien creature can be a product of prehistoric radiation. They could have used some color or markings as well to make them look more natural.

The battle scene (notice no plural, because there is only one battle that you see more than a glimpse of) is fantastic, and is the only part worthy of the Godzilla name. His breath weapon was a bit underwhelming, but solid for an attempt at a realistic version.

The introduction of Godzilla is very lackluster. He just sort of shows up, and we track him moving along for almost an hour in the water. He finally makes his big entrance in Hawaii, only to disappear within seconds of exposure, literally. They should have really gave the audience more at the airport battle.

There is no terror in the eyes of the people witnessing this. The few shots that they attempted this, the extras looked like they were running for the catering truck for lunch. No horror, no urgency, no giant foot coming down within inches of a terrified populace. Godzilla did not spank us for our arrogance, not once; the MUTOs tried, but they were more concerned for with one another. When it comes to the Monsters' interactions with humanity, they were just doing their own thing that happened to be in the middle of a city.

Notice how first and foremost, this review has contained the monsters. Not so with this movie. They build up this story with the help of Brian Cranston for almost an hour until the writers decide "Okay... his job is done" and the rest of the movie just continues as if he never existed. His son Ford certainly doesn't care. Note to the writers: If you want the audience to invest in a character, don't make them almost pointless. It seems that this movie just tried to force character driven drama so bad, that they just shoved it in where ever they could, and forgot to include GODZILLA! If you think the big man had enough screen time, I have no idea why you watch Godzilla movies in the first place. I can understand a dramatic build to the reveal, but that was not a dramatic reveal. That was 60 minutes of build - to 30 seconds of Godzilla - to another 40 minute build to the actual part of the movie worth watching. One can argue that "it worked in cloverfield", but cloverfield was much more suspense driven from a POV that was built for the long reveal. This is the best 20 minute Godzilla movie ever hidden deep within 100 minutes of something else.

This movie could of, and SHOULD of been leaps and bounds better. So much potential wasted on trying to force drama. The awesomeness that was the creature Godzilla should have been more than a cameo in his own movie. I don't need tons more... Just a secondary battle in the second act, and a bit more instrument of destruction as his motivation. I can't help but feel like this lack of substance stems from the novice writer and director.

Say what you will about the 1999 movie, as least Zilla was there for the whole thing and the characters had personality.

The most frequent thought approaching any individual with a respectable taste in films will be "I've seen this before." It may show off its visual brilliance in parts that mimic the brainless god-size conflicts in Pacific Rim, but in the end it feels cartoonish, fake and ultimately not as awe-inspiring as it could've been. Sadly the film then plods on for the next hour with very little happening and with some of the most forgettable characters ever committed to film, (I could only remember the one characters name because it was the same as the make of car I drive).
As the storyline and the characters were so dull I decided to hold on to the hope that maybe some monster action may at least make the final third of the film exciting - boy was I wrong! for some reason a decision was made to cut away from any action everytime there was actually a threat of some action starting. Views of fights from inside wrecked cars, over peoples shoulders and even on TV screens, (that's right - I paid for IMAX 3D just to watch something happen on a TV screen instead), instead of letting the audience actually experience the monsters clash in all their glory.

I've heard a lot of people commenting that it is a film that slowly builds tension with character development and the slow reveal of the creatures allows the tension to build but I honestly recommend that these people go back and watch films like Jaws & Alien to see how this is done properly because Godzilla is just an extremely dull movie.

It maybe had some too slow moments for a movie about the King of Monsters, but it didn't ruin the experience for me at all. All of the background information was awesome and made the story much more interesting. As for these slow scenes - it's just that people (including me) probably went to the movie to see more of Godzilla himself and him fighting than it was shown. But when it was shown - it was epic. It's probably the best Godzilla movie (of course it's almost impossible to compare it to the oldest films, but it was definitely better than the previous 1998 American version). Expand
