Not quite what I was hoping. Avoided combat scenes extremely often, almost entirely till the last 20 minutes. It was upsetting bc every time that something good was going to happen it just switched scenes.

I have seen every Godzilla movie, all 28 of them, all I can say is that the critics here are they lack a proper appreciation for the genera, because this was the greatest Daikaiju film I have ever seen.

People complaining about there being not enough of Godzilla apparently haven't sat down and taken the time to actually watch the source material.

He wasn't eye candy, he wasn't the main character, he wasn't MEANT to be the center of attention, he was meant to be an allegory and the destruction he caused and the peoples lives he affected were the main focus of the original.Given, that through the 60's and 70's he WAS the main attraction, but, that was in a time when he was targeted towards twelve year old kids while the original as well as the 1985 sequel were meant to be enjoyed for their undertones and plot.

TL;DR The movie is like the original which was amazing and the movie is SUPPOSED to be about the human element, so quit whining about there not being enough monster even though he is there for a reasonable amount of time.… Expand

To all the people who complain there wasn't enough Godzilla in this movie: Have you ever seen the original Gojira (1954)? Or ever heard of a thing called 'tension-building'? Surely not.

This film was everything I hoped it would be and thensome! The characters were all great, there isn't a single bad performance - everyone treats this with respect and add an appropriately serious tone to the film. Ford Brody is my favourite as his strict code of honour and morals was put to the test by malevolent creatures, which created some brilliant dilemmas and great duo scenes with his father (played brilliantly by Bryan Cranston). Themes were perfectly adapted from the original Gojira, which makes this 10x more dark and gritty, but it doesn't come off as stale or half-assed.

Godzilla himself is a majestic beast, and one I don't think audiences will forget about in the near future, as well as the MUTOs who are perfect adversaries for Godzilla. This isn't Pacific Rim, you actually care about these Monsters fighting and look forward to the outcome.

In conclusion, Gareth Edwards' Godzilla is a magnificent monster movie full of heart and soul with wonderful direction and spectacular visual effects.

Even better than the original, IMO! (10/10)… Expand

I have to tell you that IMAX 3D is really the only way to watch this movie. I enjoyed it thoroughly. A lot of people say that the first half of the movie was slow. This new depiction of the great kaiju, acting as a reboot of the franchise and directed by an up-and-coming director, Gareth Edwards, is a very entertaining film despite the complaints of there being too little of Godzilla. I somewhat concur with this argument, however, having seen many of Japanese films, especially the original in 1954, it is known for Godzilla to be teased throughout the movie or have limited screen time, yet still have a profound impact on the film and the audience it is delivered to, and this is what the 2014 version does very well. However, at times, it did come at an annoyance when right as we see him, the scene changes. But this should not take away from otherwise a really good film. The design of Godzilla and the monstrous villains, the MUTOs, were very well designed and augmented to represent a respectable scale to real world buildings/infrastructure. As usual, the action scenes were a blast, with the final act dedicated to the fight we've been waiting for between the creatures. The plot carried the film smoothly, coupled with some good acting from the likes of Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, and David Strathairn. But it should be noted that the good acting came from secodnary characters while our central character, Ford Brody, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was very bland and one-dimensional. The film was an attempt at very human orientated monster film rather than focused on the monsters themselves, which is somewhat of a problem in a movie called "Godzilla". However, Gareth Edwards blends both well enough to not detract what this film manages to accomplish. With the news of a Monsterverse being created by Legendary Studious, involving the likes of King Kong, I am very excited to see where they take Godzilla in his next movie in 2019, where he will pit off against his greatest foes, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, before taking on King Kong in 2020 to determine who the real "King" is.… Expand

This movie is amazing. I get that people don’t like the lack of Godzilla, but I thought the build up was great. And the sound design and CGI was perfect.

The movie was perfect the way it was done. I can't see anyone do better than this. There is a thing called, "suspense" that a lot of movies lack nowadays. There is a thing called, "suspense" that a lot of movies lack nowadays. I loved the teasing because that's when you know they got you hooked. Many monster movie franchises in the past pulled this off effectively and no one complained about it. Let’s start off with Alien and the way that teases us little by little on what it looks like as it kills people one by one. The next one is Predator. This one is completely camouflaged killing squad members until Arnold is the only one left to finally show himself. Just look at movies like Jaws, Dragonslayer, Terminator, The hidden, Jurassic Park, The abyss and many others. This is a great formula because it keeps you in anticipation. Pacific Rim was pure garbage from beginning to end. I'm glad this movie didn't follow that path because then there’s nothing for you to look forward to. Children probably liked Pacific Rim just like another movie called Transformers. These are movies that failed to have an on par story. All they are is multimillion dollar toy commercials from beginning to end in which by the time the movie is over you wind up with a migraine. There’s no suspense or WOW moment unlike what the new Godzilla movie accomplished. There are enough Godzilla WOW moments and Trailer scenes that were newly edited which no one talks about. This made every Godzilla scene new to me. Also I will say that I have seen every Godzilla movie and I will say that this one had more screen time than each of those other ones. Now with talks of a sequel they will probably add more fight scenes but they have to stick to this formula.… Expand

Admittedly, this installment in the Godzilla franchise is my very first experience with Godzilla. It's nothing like King Kong, and Godzilla is not a villain. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ve to start off by saying a couple simple things. **** the haters...**** them right in their asses". Now that I've got that off my chest, I can write this review. Also don't read if you don't want to read spoilers.

This movie is amazing in every way. Like Alex Maverick said "it's almost like Jaws". It builds the suspense of Godzilla coming and uses distraction as well. The people saying Godzilla wasn't in it enough need to just shut the **** up. Seriously, were we watching the same movie? The movie created this sense of how? Godzilla was destroying the nuclear plant that's eventually kills Brian's wife in the movie. We later find out it's the monster Godzilla will be hunting down the entire movie. This was pretty much what the movie was. A predator hunting down its prey. People also had the criticism of how it jumped around too much. It was about giant ****ing monsters that were trying to consume nuclear waste. It's not like there's ****ing nuclear waste just siting in one area.

The critics seem to be getting more snobby by the minute. If you don't like this movie, then simply you don't like the character of Godzilla. This was a perfect version of what a Godzilla movie should be. If you don't like Godzilla...then you have no right to comment then. You are just simply not liking the movie because of the character is quite childish to me. I'm looking at you Geoff Pevere. I don't care if you don't. Like the character...just don't be a jackass and make a movie rotten because you're a pretentious prick.

Some of the critics reviews were "Godzilla is a secondary character to his own movie". Like I said before, but let elaborate why this idea ****ing makes me made. Godzilla has a screen time of about forty five minutes and that's plenty of time. We see when he has too much screen time and the filmmaker runs out of things for the creature to do (the 98 version is a prime example). What did the critics expect from this movie. Mindless action of two beasts fighting the whole time? Didn't you hate when transformers just had a bunch of mindless action with robots? Or monsters fighting robots? The answer is yes.. It's sad that character development of the people around the beast and Godzilla himself, is classified as boring. So basically the critics are being pretentious and childish snobs.

The other man argument is that they killed Walter White off too soon and kick ass isn't a strong enough actor to be the lead...well I'm going to call your bluff and raise you another **** you. First of all. Godzilla is the lead and none of the humans were leads at all. They were simpler there to not have mindless action and also to have the audience to relate to someone. Also, he's a perfectly fine in the rule. "He's not a storm enough actor". Like I said "he's not suppose to steal the show" and what did you want out of the guy for Christ sake? I do wind Brian was in the movie more, but this doesn't hurt the movie that much. Critics sometimes to to just hide in their caves they live in and literally such their mouths.

The movie wasn't perfect by any means. It had a few plot holes, but they weren't major. When going into a movie called Godzilla, you do wish there was a little more fighting scene with Godzilla, but to me the fighting scenes were epic. It would have been too much like Man of steels ending if you would have Godzilla fighting for too long. Also the end scenes when he kills the last creature is ****ing epic. It's one of most epic scenes I've ever seen in movie history. It actually had me saying out loud "holy **** **** yeah". Overall it's one of the easiest 10/10 I could give to a movie. 2014 was saved by GBH and is now a success because of this move. 9.6.10.… Expand

This movie really made me forget the crappy 1998 G.I.N.O... Speaking about it, Roland Emmerich stop doing movies, please! You and Michel Bay are almost at the same level as Uwe Boll!. The only reason I can't give more score is that there isn't enough of Godzilla in it, and! the anti-climatic fight scenes during the half of the movie. Who cares about human drama! I don't! and the only thing I expect to see in Godzilla is a MASIVE monster fights! Well, it got all that but they just focused too much in human drama that the title monster feels like a secondary character or an Extra. Anyway, saying all this, the movie is very entretaing and you will walk out of the teater with a smile. Hope to see more Godzilla movies soon!… Expand

Amazing movie, don't listen to all the Godzilla fans saying there wasn't enough action and Godzilla sighting.
The effects are breathtaking and this film is worth seeing in 3d, it easily enters my top 5 films of all time!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All over I think this movie is an example for a good "monster movie", which should be watched in the cinema. All effects, started at Godzilla himself over to explosions and so on, and also the sound are worthy for the cinema. When I went to watch the movie I just saw the first trailer, so I was unbiased, because I heard some trailers after include "spoilers". That was good.

At the beginning the movie starts with a good pace, but then there is a lean period in the middle. The movie takes time to describe the characters and the background of Godzilla, etc. I don't think that it is as bad as it sounds but I wished there was more pace in this part of the movie. In addition in my opinion the character Ford Brody keeps a little bit pale. The love to his wife and his little son is illustrated very well but I think the relationship to his father is neglected. But this might be dedicated to the early death of his father. These are the only points of criticism. The rest of the movie is great. As I said the effects and especially the final fight are awesome!

Persons how know the "old" Godzilla will watch this movie with a little chuckle I think. Above all at the final fight.

I hope you'll like my first little review. (I apologize for my beginners English. Be patient with me, I promise to improve :-)… Expand

Anyways, first off, I love Bryan Cranston's acting. He was perfect at his role. It was unfortunate that he had to die early in the movie. On the other hand, Aaron Johnson was alright. To be honest, I do not like the part of him saving his family and all. Still, Ken Wanatabe was quite good at his acting. A quiet character who believe in Godzilla saving the world. The weird part was when he brought up the bombing of Hiroshima. I might not understand what significant of that reminder, but yeah.

I thought Godzilla was to be the only monster in the movie, but it got better. In this movie, Godzilla is not the destroyer, but the savior. It was very nice of him to save the world from MUTO. My favorite part was when Godzilla decided to use his laser beam towards his enemies. It was AMAZING. I love it. There were some anti climax in the movie. When Godzilla was about to fight for the first time, it was shown in a TV which also skipped some part of the battle. Still, it was nice and I was happy that Godzilla did not die at the end.

I recommend this movie. It was nice to watch, especially at the end. Go Gojira!… Expand

This movie is deeply human and visually gorgeous, but I don't think it will fulfill the expectations of audiences used to lots of action and none of the leave-it-to-the-imagination-suspense built on a slow pace in here. Every time Godzilla appears it makes your eyes jump out of your face and that only happens because it's image wasn't banalized and the levels of tension were very well controlled. It is worth your money and I seriously believe that, if this movie gets misunderstood now, maybe in ten years it will begin to appear on top10 or top5 best commercial movies of the 2010's.… Expand

Hail the king to monsters. Everything is done so well. The acting is what we can expect from a Godzilla film. The action sequences are very good. Godzilla's design is good. The roar is incredible. I usually hate dumb monster or superhero movies, but I thought this movie was very well done. It was probably too suspenseful for the average dumb movie goer who wants instant gratification. Yes, the human drama leaves something to be desired, but I I really liked the back story. The best part of the movie was an incredibly satisfying, epic finale. It's an enjoyable movie. More than most remakes, it remains very true to the original concept. Since the original concept involves rock 'em, sock 'em fights between giant monsters as puny humans watch their cities crumble in the crossfire, there's a limit to how auspicious this new film can get. It's pretty close to that limit.

The concept is revised for modern times, cleverly and disturbingly working in some of our modern experiences with nuclear energy. Some of the film's strongest work is a visit to the ruins surrounding a destroyed power plant in Japan, a chilling reminder of recent history. It's good enough to keep your attention while you wait for the monsters to appear. The movie builds suspense for a while, but don't worry. The mayhem is coming.

The effects are very strong, and seeing this movie in a good theater with IMAX and/or 3D is advisable. This being an American production Godzilla seems to be illustrating our obesity problem, but he works. The score is a bracing homage to early film music, with a bit of Japanese flavor sprinkled in. There isn't a great deal of ceremony or sentimentality. The tone is very appropriate and conveys a sense of cosmicism. That is, the lesson of Godzilla is that the universe is bigger than us.

There are some fetching lines of dialogue, but the human characters aren't particularly developed. The Bryan Cranston character is probably the most compelling one in the movie simply because he is trying to do something productive, while the others occasionally act but spend most of the film sitting and watching the larger goings on. Which, to my way of thinking, is fine. You're not going to see a movie called "Godzilla" for the people in it. Ultimately, the film's suspense and action, summoned skillfully by a surprisingly newfound director, make it worth seeing.… Expand

Seen there....... really enjoyed it. Love the creature design of Godzilla and MUTO!!!!

2014 is definitely a great year for the King of Monsters to return!!!!!

Also this movie is way better than 1998 Godzilla movie (awful!)

Will it be a hit this time unlike last time? Well unlike Ronald Emmerich helmed 1998 remake, which I haven't seen so far, this is the best monster movie made in Hollywood since Jurassic Park. In some parts it is even better and more creative than Jurassic Park. Only thing lacking is the humour and memorable character like Dr. Ian Malcolm or Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park. But enough with the comparison, let 's talk about the film on its own. This movie is non-stop entertaining that's for sure. It is entertaining even when the scene does not involve monster fights and human drama. And main credit for this goes to Bryan Cranston(whom we said goodbye on TV last year as "Walter White" on incredible finale of equally incredible "Breaking Bad") and Ken Watanabe who steal every scene they are in as scientist due to their incredible acting despite the fact they are in supporting role. As for the leading characters played by Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elisabeth Olsen as husband and wife, they are okay in their performance, but are not convincing enough to be a parent of 5 year old, since they themselves look like a teenager. However when they are not together, they do their job decent enough to hold their scenes tight.
Enough about performance, let's talk about the action scenes. The fight scenes are pretty awesome. They would be one of best fight scenes you would see this year. Some of the monster-vs-monster fight can give competition to last year's Pacific Rim. Unlike some monsters in a PG-13 film, here monsters are really scary not only because of their looks (kudos to creature design department) but because the not so experienced director add enough build up, momentum ,unpredictability and thrill without any clichéd jump scares, to make the atmosphere scary.
The film is brilliant technically. And by technically I do not mean just the special effects but the cinematography and sound effect. But most impressive thing is art direction. Here everything is not grey or dark, which is the case in movie like these, but here each and everything looks beautiful, be it architecture of Japan or close up shots of insects(yes, insects!) which looks like they are from National Geographic Channel.… Expand

For those of you that remember the 1998 train wreck of a Godzilla film this will breathe new life into the franchise for you. There's a lot of focus elsewhere for big chunks of the movie such as when we're with the human characters or the other monsters in the film. It's not that these portions of the film aren't good but after a while you do expect to see a bit more Godzilla in a film called 'Godzilla'. It's like when you go to see a band and the support act is good but have an obnoxiously long set so you're standing there thinking "Okay you guys aren't bad but you're not the reason I came here. Wrap it up." But when the headliner finally appears it is just un-freaking-believable.
The acting is decent though not outstanding. Bryan Cranston puts in the best performance but that was kind of a given. Birds fly really well, fish swim really well and Bryan Cranston acts really well. Aaron Taylor Johnson has the most screen time and there's nothing really wrong with his performance it's just not his most impressive one. Although that's mainly because the writing of them film rarely calls for him to show anything other than worry, angst or fear.
Could it be better? Yeah but it's still a huge leap in the right direction, a triumphant return for everyones favourite kaiju. For people new to the franchise it would be a great introduction. For those long time fans it is tremendously satisfying to see Godzilla have his dignity restored more than a decade since the last horrific attempt that we can all finally forget about.… Expand

The middle of the movie was pretty boring. We get to see Godzilla for the first time (as in all of him) and right before a huge fight starts, the movie cuts away and we don't see any of it. Ultimately, it's still a good movie but the sequel has a lot of room for improvement if you get what I mean.… Expand

While it's human characters don't leave a lasting impact (with the exception of Bryan Cranston), Godzilla compensates with plenty of action and an overall eerie tone not found in other epic monster movies.

The fight scenes in this movie were awesome, reminded me a lot of the movie Pacific Rim which I also really enjoyed. In 1954 the Toho Film Company made a picture about a huge dinosaur-like monster that rampaged through Tokyo. It was only 93 minutes long but it spawned a legend that has lasted 60 years and 28 (Japanese) films. I am, of course, referring to the colossus that is Godzilla.

Fast forward to 2014 and the newest incarnation of the world's most famous kaiju. Godzilla is an icon and the director, Gareth Edwards, had a mammoth task to overcome; how to bring the monster into the 21st Century without angering the fans.

The film begins with some original opening credits; words are redacted before the viewers' eyes, leaving only the names of the cast. This plays out over footage, supposedly from the 1950s, showing radars, military personnel and, finally, a large nuclear explosion at Bikini Atoll (the first of many references to actual events and /or classic Godzilla movies ).

We jump to 1999 and meet Dr. Ichiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) who is investigating the skeleton of a large, prehistoric creature found in the Philippines. Then we zoom over to Japan where Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) is concerned about the nuclear plant where he works. Disaster obviously ensues and what follows is a sequence reminiscent of the Fukushima disaster which occurred only a few years ago.

And now we are up to date. Joe's son, Ford, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is happily living in San Francisco with his wife (Elizabeth Olsen) and young son.

At this point I would like to say that I was slightly disturbed at watching these two young actors playing lovers as, in my head, they are the Maximoff siblings (I know, I know, it's not real but I can still have my opinion).

Father and son are eventually reunited and that's where the action really begins.

Cranston is brilliant as a father who feels like he has lost it all; both traumatised and unhinged in equal measure. Watanabe is the yin to Cranston's yang; calm and collected to a point where some of his dialogue is barely above a whisper.

The younger actors; Taylor-Johnson and Olsen, are not as strong in their roles. Olsen is not given much to do except cry and run. In fact, one downside of this movie is that there is a distinct lack of strong female characters.

Taylor-Johnson has a larger part to play but he doesn't quite fulfil the leading man role. He isn't entirely convincing as an action star but neither plausible as desperate family man. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a good actor but he wasn't given enough to work with. The script is basic with Cranston's impassioned ranting (heard in the trailer) as the only stand out part.

But to most, it isn't the human cast that people care about. Does the 2014 version of Godzilla make the grade? In short, yes. He bears a resemblance to the original creature but without the look of a rubber suit. You could believe that there is a dinosaur-like monster out there. As you have probably gathered from the many trailers, Godzilla isn't the only kaiju in the movie but I will leave what they are, and why they are there, as a surprise.

And then there is THAT roar. Spine tingling with a bass deep enough to turn your internal organs to mush, perfect.

At several points in the film, just as the audience thinks it might be treated to a monster smackdown, the focus is always pulled back to the less interesting human story. However, the final battle is worth waiting for, if not a little short. Gareth Edwards has held enough back for the inevitable sequel (pending box office results).

There are small niggles here and there but I was always a fan of the King of Monsters (another classic reference) and there is enough here to remind us of the creature we fell in love with.

Bonus points if you spot the reference to another kaiju which appears in the first half of the film.

Verdict: Go see it if you like epic disaster movies or monster carnage

A brand new start and also an homage to previous Godzilla movies, this new film combines the best of disaster epics and monster brawls in one package deal, yet seems to forget a few things behind when portraying the human story underneath it all (but who wanted to watch this movie for the human story?). The beginning plot with Joe (portrayed by Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad" fame) witnessing the traumatic effects of (what's soon to be revealed as) giant dormant monsters and desperately wanting to find answers, is really interesting and gets you emotionally invested in the non-monster side of the film. Sadly, the trailer shows almost all of Cranston's scenes because he dies as a result of the carnage from the first monster debut at about 45 minutes into the film. This is pretty sad, as his acting stands leagues ahead of everyone else in the film. In his wake, we're left with following his son Ford (played by former Kick-Ass, Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who while believable as a emotionally-damaged son and still caring father and husband to his own family, comes off as wooden and emotionless in scenes where he's confronted with the brutality of kaiju destruction. He seems to forget the urgency and danger of what's happening except in scenes where he reminds others of it. Ken Watanabe plays the lead expert on Godzilla, part of a secret corporation whose main goal is to study the monster since its discovery in the 1950s, yet always seems to have a strained confused look on his face when looking at... well... anything. While the corporation is worldwide, his role seems to be there for two reasons: 1) to be the token Japanese guy because this is a Godzilla movie and 2) to be the only one in the story who (like the audience) wants the American military to back off and let the monsters duke it out. "Let them fight!"

Enough about the humans... GODZILLA AND MONSTERS! Like a true Godzilla film, this isn't just a disaster film about a giant monster rampaging through civilization. Godzilla is the strangely-accepted solution to dealing with OTHER monsters. We're introduced to 2 giant bug-like MUTO (massive unidentified terrestrial organism), one male and one female, who have awoken from their dormancy to begin mating season in San Francisco. These big beasties love radiation and emit EMP-like signals that thwart all major military equipment within range. With both a first round in Honolulu between the male MUTO and Godzilla, and the main 2v1 battle in San Francisco, too much of the monster fighting action is portrayed in the background, watched second-hand on TV screen, or quickly cut-away from to the human story. Only at the end, do we get to see full-on unadulterated monster-on-monster-on monster action, which makes the entirety of the movie worth it, especially with Godzilla's secret weapon and finishing move. That scene is almost worth the price of your movie ticket on its own.

In summary, "Godzilla" is a film that returns to formula on monster movies. While it take a while to get the story going (about 40 minutes), gets rid of its best actor too quickly, and later peppers in a bit too much human story when the monster action is at its peak, it's still a great popcorn flick that's worth it for anyone who's been hungry for a truly epic movie.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This has become my favorite movie of the year so far. This is exactly how a monster movie should be. It was realistic, it was intense, it had my jaw on the floor for some scenes.

Let's start with the story. Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) loses his wife (Juliette Binoche) in a giant power plant earthquake but what the public doesn't know is that it wasn't an earthquake at all but a giant cave in where a giant monster known simply as a MUTO has hidden itself in a cocoon for 14 years since that day and is now being hidden away in a fake quarantine zone. Once the monster escapes it's left up to the only other thing big enough, Godzilla, to take it down.

Now I took into account that this is a giant monster movie and for a plot to be something pretty simple like that is perfectly okay with me simply for one reason, the execution of the story is done in a way that I feel as though this is how it would go down if there were giant monsters roaming earth.

Now the acting. Bryan Cranston just kills it in this role. In the scene where his wife died I believed he was truly sad. All around an amazing performance which makes it kind of heartbreaking since he's only in the movie for maybe 20-25 minutes and then just dies leaving us with the rest of the story to be told through his son, Aaron Taylor Johnson. I'll be honest I think I would've liked it better if Cranston had stayed alive and like helped back at the headquarters that was monitoring everything but that's just me. I say this because Aaron's character just feels a little one dimensional to me. Like he didn't have enough character. I cared more about seeing his wife (Elizabeth Olsen) stay alive than him and she's off somewhere hiding while he's risking his life trying to diffuse a bomb to save thousands of people. Elizabeth Olsen does a great job playing the wife in trouble and Ken Watanabe is great as always.

The CGI. I'm just going to run through this one fast because this is something I don't focus on a ton in movies but I was told how amazing the CGI in this was so I knew I'd have to focus on it for this and talk about it. The CGI for the monsters is just beyond incredible, Godzilla just looked all around great and I loved every moment that I got to see him and the MUTOs. Now as for the scenery I felt it was a little lacking, I don't know just when I see those buildings fall apart I had a harder time believing I was actually seeing buildings get destroyed. That's all I really have to say on CGI.

Now for our main man, The King Of Monsters himself. Godzilla. I had a few nitpicks in everything but this guy right here is the reason this movie got a full 10/10 from me. To describe him in one word, Epic. Just all around epic. His grand reveal sent chills down my spine and left my heart racing 10 minutes after the scene had ended. Every time that roar came out I just melted with pure nostalgia and love. This is exactly what I want Godzilla to be. He's not a "hero" he's not an "enemy" he's just an animal trying to take out things he feels threatened by. He didn't attack humans, only if they attacked him and even then it seemed like he didn't purposely try to hurt them. He seemed more scared than angry. I feel he doesn't attack humans simply because well... they're humans. They're no threat to him, they tried to drop nuclear bombs on him and he just walked it off. He fights the MUTOs because they're a threat to him. They want him dead and have the strength to back it up. The fight sequences between Godzilla and the MUTOs are something out of your childhood dreams. He throws these things around into buildings and the second you see his tail turn blue you just get this amazing feeling in your stomach because you know what's coming. ATOMIC BREATH!! Me and my friend saw Godzilla grab the larger MUTO's jaw and we said how we thought he was gonna break it's jaw and it was going to be awesome but what does he do? He freaking uses his laser breath and shoots it down the MUTO's throat until it's head falls off. My jaw was on the floor out of sheer amazement at this sight.

In conclusion Godzilla is a great movie with nice acting, good effects, and one bad ass monster. A definite must see for any Godzilla fan or fan of monster movies.… Expand

If you don't go in thinking you're going to see a Godzilla movie - it's not bad.

Sure by showing the monsters from an 'ordinary man' perspective and delaying the monsters' reveal, Edwards made a creative choice that is artistic but controversial at the same time. It would have worked wonderfully if the characters are strong like in Spielberg's earlier efforts (Jaws, Close Encounters..) But Aaron Taylor's character is not compelling that it almost derails the whole film. (a weakness of old Japanese Godzilla films too in fact) Thank goodness for the kick ass monster action and spectacle, while reserved for the final third, was so great that you don't mind those boring bits. Great re-start of the franchise..essentially 'Godzilla Begins'. Can't wait for the next installments when classic monsters such as Mothra and Ghidorah are re-introduced.… Expand

This Godzilla reboot is both massive and highly unique, and the directing is just something spectacular. Gareth Edwards is one director I’m not familiar with, but with this movie he truly kept me interested. The things that truly stands out with this movie is the epic soundtrack, the CGI and massive and unique scenes that I never have seen before. There are much awesome things with this movie, but it got some critical downsides. The aspects of the movie that I find most disturbing is that there could have been more scenes with Godzilla, it felt like the focus of the film is on other things. Another critical thing is that it could have had more action sequences, and that some choices that some characters did isn’t well thought through. Aaron Taylor-Johnson isn’t the best actor for the main role, I think they should focused more on Bryan Cranston, who is an flawless actor. The final critical thing with Godzilla is that one of the main characters died, and I think that ruined the movie, but also that the ending could have been more entertaining.

My conclusion of Godzilla is that it’s an cool and massive movie that's well directed, but it got some critical things that lowers my rating.

Thanks to the new Godzilla director Gareth Edwards, I must say in this new latest monster anticipation of the summer, Godzilla brings better sound, and visual effects, new casts and the first time they actually ever converted it in 3D and IMAX 3D. I am going to contrast between gojira 1954 and Godzilla 2014. I'll start with gojira 1954. In this first Kaiju film, this is in black and white, they speak Japanese and it's over a ninety-eight minutes if the film which that sucks to only me. Now next am going do about Godzilla 2014. In this new reboot franchise, this has new creatures fighting Godzilla in it, perfect sound, and visual effects, also in 3D and IMAX 3D and best action performances which I gotta say I loved it better then the 1954 one and other franchises before the new one came out. So I would liked to say thank you Gareth Edwards for bringing the franchise back this year. And one more thing to say that this is the summer's best anticipation movie I ever seen in 2014.… Expand

Godzilla is just amazing, and the two Mutos he fights look amazing as well, the action was awesome and the Human characters didn't really get boring. Some things i didn't like were that the human characters didn't have much effect on the story and Godzilla didn't have a motive for fighting the Muto's, for some reason he just decides to fight some monsters. Also it was weird how he didn't harm and humans. Over the story and action were great, i recommend watching it. 8/10… Expand

His opening credits, which no one seems to have noticed, focus on the very immediate crisis of government concealment of truth and prosecution of whistle-blowers. Note how he "whites out" information about the filmmakers and actors against background imagery of everything from Darwin's Origin of Species to classified documents on nuclear testing. The other themes have been much discussed and usually mistakenly by conventional movie reviewers who really have no idea what they are watching. This is a monster movie about the relationship between individual and state, and between individual and nature. Don't miss it! Blow-off the latest vacuous romantic comedy or the next BS transformers regurgitation. Godzilla is the real thing.… Expand

This is my new favorite incarnation of Godzilla: a dark guardian protecting the balance of nature, no matter the cost. The special effects are fantastic. The acting is good. The story is great. This is all that I could ask for from a Godzilla movie. I left the theater with a smile on my face, and I would definitely recommend watching this movie.… Expand

Watching Godzilla was a cathartic experience.

It's a good movie. It follows the original ways of godzilla movies by hyping up the appearance of godzilla which is really awesome on how it is done. It mostly portrays the story for the stupid son. Overall it is a good movie.

Godzilla isn't a bad creature feature despite not enough Godzilla or Bryan Crantson. And the whole "will the family be reunited ?" plot is old by now. It was an amazing experience. It felt very real. Godzilla is the kind of movie in which you can submerge and let everything go. Its candy for our imagination. The instructor could easily have included the battle between the Mutos and Godzilla at the airport. But once the fighting was on it was a pleasure to look at!

If a sequel comes, I hope, however, there will be more focus on Godzilla and less on humans.

I agree with a lot of the criticisms of the film. It felt less like a film about Godzilla and more like a film about a soldier trying to get back to his family, with Godzilla fighting monsters in the background. Ive long been a Godzilla fan, Ive seen almost every movie and the original one from 1954 still hails as a classic in my opinion and while there was some things that could have been done better in this movie, I still feel like this movie was/is one of the best movies of 2014 and marked a successful return for the King to America. Yeah, some could say that holding Godzilla back until roughly an hour in was sort of a letdown as well as killing off Brian Cranston(the only actor who seemed to give a **** the entire film) but this film mostly suffered from what I felt like was under-developed characters and over-all a somewhat too "human centered" movie. Taylor-Johnson is passable and Olsen is also enjoyable but other than Cranston, Hawkins, Strathairn and Watanabe the movie could have benefited from a better lead actor who could take command of the screen while not feeling like such an emotionless rock someone like Chris Pratt, Matt Damon (doubt he would do it) or even a Tom Hardy would have been much better suited for the role than Aaron Johnson. Yes, showing the human side of Godzilla's path of destruction is a much needed quality to these movies but not to the extent of giving your title character around 24 minutes of TOTAL screen time(+small appearances in the beginning) which is why I didn't have an issue with it. But on the flip side, most of the movie showed the humans being stupid and trying to nuke Godzilla(who feeds off nuclear fallout) and the MUTOs, the entire human aspect of the film could have been done alot better then the simple "lets nuke em" approach. The fight scene towards the end really made the movie for me as a whole and the final appearance by Godzilla was glorious as well. All in all, I feel like this movie was very well done. Say what you want about Godzilla's screen time but you can definitely feel his presence being felt as they cleverly took a page out of classic movies like "Jaws," and "Jurassic Park" at holding their biggest and baddest monster back, allowing you to feel his presence off screen before unleashing him onscreen.… Expand

From the start to the ending I was eyes open into the storyline. Which was the generic awesome original Godzilla genre. "We need to **** kill these things" then meeting with failure over failure. Godzilla is a destructive force..Godzilla is natures balance.. and the idea just knowing that pays off, because in this film they are fully there in the astmosphere, but they barely show them until the end product. For an example, they show off that they are about to have an epic battle, then teases it into someone else ACROSS THE WORLD. For some people it was a big problem, for me. It was just right. It kept me watching, looking for whats next, it gave me chills down my spine. Btw Godzilla is a badass MOFO.

Though it needed more of Byran Canston. He made the starting of the film, feel so nice. He was the center of darkness and emotional depression that nature caused him to be. It makes you feel mentally that bad things are going to happen to the humans in the future of the movie. In the end it sorta pays off with good acting but generic characters.. which my family didn't mind. End result it was smooth and dramatic. Visually it couldn't be better, we hit the point of realism that our eyes can handle.

I first heard of this film from James Rolfe some months ago; since then I've been waiting anxiously for it's release date, hoping that it would justify all the hype I had built.

And it didn't disappoint, in fact it delivered more than I expected. Now, I want to clarify that I'm no Godzilla expert and my limited knowledge of this cult originates from the vision of Godzillathon, but I don't think I would exaggerate if I said that this movie is probably one of the best in the entire saga.

While the first half of the film may be a little slow paced for some people, it does a good job at introducing the characters and developing the plot.

The constant interruption of the fight between the monsters was clever: it made me crave for more and more and the tension I had accumulated was slowly killing me , but it paid off in the end.

The last 20 minutes were epic, and really explain why Godzilla is the "King of the monsters". Sure, some may complain that, for a movie titled Godzilla, 20 minutes of screen time aren't enough, but I'd rather have 20 minutes of an intense and well done fight, than 2 hours of:"Oh look explosions and destruction and other random stuff!"… Expand

The best giant monster movie I have ever seen. The tension is real, the characters believable, and the destruction is glorious. A perfect melding of the original Japanese mentality towards the series with American writing and filmmaking. IThe best giant monster movie I have ever seen. I found myself to be completely absorbed in it and enthralled by it.

There's definitely more of a focus on the human element and characters, which clearly has disappointed some. Personally I don't feel the movie could have succeeded quite in the same way. This movie has the potential to please audiences new and old. If they had just focused on Godzilla himself then this would've only appealed to old-school Godzilla fans. It would've also lost the realistic feel this movie has. Honestly I see it as the best of both worlds, and I loved old-school, Japanese Godzilla.

The movie doesn't skip out on it's monster though. Godzilla is still here in all his magnificence, and director Gareth Edwards just loves to show off his massive size. I love how Godzilla is portrayed in this film, and I can't wait for the sequels this movie sets up for. It's a perfect introduction to Godzilla, and what is hopefully the start of a new series of films.

The tension builds to perfection in this movie. It's an absolute blast to behold and it had me sitting on the edge of my seat in suspense many times throughout. It's an absolute masterpiece of a monster movie, and one that I recommend be at the top of your must-watch list.… Expand

Only it would have been Kaiju fighting Kaiju. Godzilla looked awesome! On that, we all agreed. GODZILLA,is the most epic monster movie i have ever seen in my life,it was the most exhilirating ,exciting and satisfying in it's genre truly an example to follow.Director Gareth Edwards has done only one small budget film beforeGODZILLA,is the most epic monster movie i have ever seen in my life,it was the most exhilirating ,exciting and satisfying in it's genre truly an example to follow.Director Gareth Edwards has done only one small budget film before "monsters",he brought quality and true emotion in that movie,while still maintaining that great spectacle action.

The movie has great actors supported by Bryan Cranston(breaking bad,malcolm in the middle),Elizabeth Olsen(oldboy,avengers 2),Aaron Johnson(kick ass),they all deliver a magnificent performance ,especially from Bryan Cranston.The human element which most of the movie is hangs onto is fantastic ,you root for these guys ,you care for them,you want them to survive.The story itself is quite gripping and fascinating,constantly innovating,but also remaining a good throwback to the 1954 original,which itself held a very political message with it.

BUUUUUUUT,besides an ultimately intruiguing plot,the reason we all came to the theater is to hear and see the KING OF ALL MONSTERS,GODZILLA.The director utilizes a very smart approach instead of showing him to us all the time,like 1998 Roland Emmerich's film,this movie constantly teases us ,so that when it actually gets to the fight and glory it's all the more energetic,worthwile and MY GOD THE FINAL FIGHT is absolutely worth the price of admission,its just 15 to 16 minutes of pure BADASS,EPIC AND GLORIOUS,battle i have ever seen,in fact when it does get to the ultimate climax it made me clap,now ussualy i am pretty pumped and all anxious when i see action in theaters,but i never clap,this movie made me want to do that,and the whole theater clapped with me ,which made this moment truly amazing because it that much more effective when everyone gets their mind blown and ripped to pieces.

GODZILLA ,is without a doubt a cinematic masterpiece and achievement,its the best example of how to do a proper monster movie:heartful,suspenseful,exciting,teasing and one that pays off very big.
So what the hell are you waiting for go line up and hear the big guy roar.

btw, GODZILLA's the roar is one of the most unique and awesome out there,seriously its really loud.… Expand

I felt the movie did a lot to try and keep to the traditional Japanese ideology. I thought they did a decent job building the suspense. I will admit it felt a little drug out once the first encounter between Godzilla and an MUTO occurred,I felt the movie did a lot to try and keep to the traditional Japanese ideology. I will admit it felt a little drug out once the first encounter between Godzilla and an MUTO occurred, Even 30 seconds of action there could have made the appetizer Edwards was trying to give us more filling.

They did an 'okay' job setting up the story, It was better than almost every Godzilla ever conceived but it felt like several different movies going on at once. Godzilla looked great, the action sequences involving Godzilla were great but in the end I don't really feel like I got enough, and came away a little disappointed as a result. Trading some Aaron Taylor-Johnson face time for Godzilla would have gone a long way.

As a fan of the series, I would have preferred Godzilla as an antagonist. It felt like making Godzilla this misunderstood savior of humanity, destroying buildings as collateral damage was hedging their bets a little much.… Expand

Godzilla is the new superhero! (if you can hang with that you'll enjoy the film) This is the film I was waiting for since 3D modeling and the movies got together. As a fan of giant monster movies since I was a kid I was waiting expectantlyGodzilla is the new superhero! (if you can hang with that you'll enjoy the film) This is the film I was waiting for since 3D modeling and the movies got together. As a fan of giant monster movies since I was a kid I was waiting expectantly for this film since I saw the trailer and it definitely is the best Godzilla movie ever!

Having seen it on opening day I can testify that the audience had a great time. My only wish list would be in the future - more monster - less military. This film takes awhile to get going, like a lot of other (superhero) franchise films, it needs to lay down a solid foundation for the many sequels still to come - Whoo Hoo!! ( man am I getting tired of Spiderman, Superman, Transformers, etc over and over - giant dinosaurs destroying cities much more fun!) You know you're going to be seeing those sequels so you might as well go to the local IMAX, strap on your glasses and have some fun with Godzilla this weekend. Note - this film is rated PG and although there are scenes that might scare small children - lots of destruction - there is virtually no gratuitous violence - which means its fine for kids over 13. It follows in the tradition of the Japanese movies nicely. Exciting, funny at times, with a decent supporting story - if you're a Godzilla fan - you'll enjoy it!… Expand

I went in expecting big, dumb action, a.k.a. a summer blockbuster, and that's not really what I got. With that being said, I'm in no way disappointed with that outcome. Director Gareth Edwards does a great job of keeping Godzilla back for the most part, only showing glimpses of him until the final 20 or so minutes. This style of narrative pays great homage to the original film, and I really respect that. People complain about Aaron Johnson's character not being emotive enough, and while he certainly isn't, that's not what the character calls for. The character calls for someone who is in control-both physically and emotionally, and that's what Johnson brings to the table. The entire cast brings their A-game and elevates occasionally clunky dialogue to fascinating, realistic drama. A great movie.… Expand

This is less about the destruction wrought by monsters [although there is plenty of that] as much as the appearance of monsters: out of the mist, the water, the sky, the earth, as they march, or fly, or erupt into view. The protagonist doesn't act as much as react [and in a nod to Jaws, one of a number of references to other science fiction/monster movies, he is named Brody] and many shots are framed from his literal view point, from behind, his person small against a huge background.

The movie takes its time: in one memorable scene, four soldiers need to check a railroad bridge, two walking on top and two below. Even if it weren't 3D the railroad ties are far apart, the view down below vertiginous. When one of them drops his flashlight, we follow it all the way down from the top, and then cut to it almost hitting one of the two below. A quiet minute or so of sheer suspense. Of course, they radio back that it's safe to come across, only to have a flaming engine [see burning train from War of the Worlds] coming straight at them, followed by a point of view from underwater, in which you see Brody, having jumped from the bridge, break the surface, the glowing train right behind him.

The sound design in exquisite: several times cables give way and snap with a twang of menace, and of course the creatures bellow much more loudly than anything in Jurassic Park [thank you IMAX speakers. if the glass of water on the dash board vibrated in Jurassic, this time your seat vibrates]

A reference to Aliens is the hand held motion devices, and for an extended, beautiful paratrooper jump, with long orange smoke trails against a deep blue sky, the sound cue is the same one Kurbick used for the approach to the monolith in the Moon excavation.

I wasn't so much scared as delighted, and I had a big grin on my face throughout. I kept thinking, WOW, someone really took the time and the trouble to get every detail right. There were no bombastic "Today we are cancelling the apocalypse! " moments, just a father separated from his wife and son, wondering whether he may be called to give his life one minute, or the next, or the next.… Expand

Godzilla 2014 is by far the best movie of the year! I am glad to see the King of the Monsters return to the big screen. Yeah, he doesn't have that much screen time like a lot of people say, but you have to remember that this is suppose to beGodzilla 2014 is by far the best movie of the year! Finally, after roughly 10 years of waiting and great anticipation, Godzilla has finally returned to the big screen, and the outcome couldn't have been more satisfying. I first have to compliment the engaging human element that was lacking andFinally, after roughly 10 years of waiting and great anticipation, Godzilla has finally returned to the big screen, and the outcome couldn't have been more satisfying. I first have to compliment the engaging human element that was lacking and reduced to downright embarrassment in the horrid first American reboot in 1998. While despite Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character dragging at times, he still manages to be a tolerable lead along with his talented supporting cast, especially since the original Godzilla films never had acting as a strong suit. The screenplay was gratifyingly reminiscent of previous Godzilla installments as well; while not being the most ideally written it's still effective enough to grip the attention span with its serious feel. The score for the film composed by Alexandre Desplat, has an old school Akira Ifukube vibe to it, paying reverence to the great Godzilla anthems of old, while injecting an additional neoteric feel that helps set the dark tone for the film. This gives each scene an extra ounce of thrilling tension. Now, as for Godzilla himself, he is seen for a limited time in his own film which was not necessarily a bad thing. Gareth Edwards' incessant build-up and teases work like a charm to make the audience crave more of the big guy (who is designed into his most intimidating incarnation to date), and more of his terrifyingly alluring parasitic foes. With that being said, the film culminates with one of the most awe-inspiring and jaw-dropping giant monster smack downs to ever be graced on screen. The nearly impeccable CGI in this film make the fight scenes seem even more unparalleled to anything that any Godzilla movie or action movie has ever delivered before.

Overall, this is a welcoming return for the king of the monsters and a commendable attempt by director and fellow Godzilla fan, Gareth Edwards at delivering an awesome reboot to the fans and breathing new life into a storied franchise.… Expand

Loved it. Director Gareth Edwards made one of the best Godzillas in recent memory. Taylor Johnson was awesome and so was Cranston and Olsen. A very well made monster movie and a return to glory for the King of Monsters. The movie looked amazing with its visuals and cinematography, you care for the characters and the build up to Gojira definitely pulls off.
