This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was an O.K movie but, it didn't live up to what the trailer promised. It looked like a Heisenberg vs. Godzilla film, but sadly there were let downs. Despite the title being "Godzilla" the bad guy MUTOs make more appearances and do more damage than Godzilla does. Also it looked like Bryan Cranston was going to be a main role character, but sadly he dies a 1/3 through the movie leaving us with Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character taking up the main role. And where was Godzilla this whole movie? When he did appear in some scenes you only got to see his spiky back swimming through the water, shrouded in smoke, his full scale body not seen clearly enough until the very end, and right when a Godzilla fight scene begins it cuts to another scene. Also if Godzilla is suppose to be a good guy, why is the Army shooting at him while the navy teams up and rendezvous with him, wouldn't the Navy like tell the Army that Godzilla is an ally before they bring him to the city? Even though the movie had some down sides it still had positive sides like, awesome special effects and CGI, interesting action, and a brand new Godzilla who may appear to be fat, but hey, least they made his atomic breath look cool and brought back his iconic roar. So unless you didn't like the 1998 version this reboot will make you forget that one even existed. Let's just hope that the planned future sequel will be better. Expand

The movie didn't focus on Godzilla entirely. If you want a lot of Godzilla, go see the terrible Roland Emmerich traffic collision. If you want a good movie with decent (to say the least) acting that features a good-looking Godzilla, watch this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A new Godzilla movie with the awesome CGI you've come to expect from modern blockbusters? And it's got Bryan Cranston in it? Awesome! The story is well told at first but it just isn't as interesting after Cranston's character dies. It's not that he shouldn't have died, it's that the wfie worrying over her husband and all just wasn't as good as, well, the plot before. The fight scenes are epic, though (even though there are few). Godzilla owns those [expletive]s! I'll admit I was just a tad disappointed, but it's still around a 7.5/10 in my opinion and it's definitely worht seeing. Expand

Given the director’s startling lo-fi debut Monsters gave us full-on creature rutting, you might fear that this is a daring director being shackled by a rating-conscious studio. Happily, the Brit director’s take on the Toho studio icon gives full reign to his ability to create compelling imagery and a knockout monster mash. It’s a shame, then, that the movie gets caught between honouring the character’s B-movie conceit AND delivering a let’s-take-everything-super-seriously approach de rigueur in post-Dark Knight blockbusterdom. If any film needed a sense of levity, it is one about a 355-foot lizard hitting stuff.

The movie gets off to a cracking start, a title sequence depicting nuclear tests, Darwinian theory, sea monster illustrations and redacted information all to Alexandre Desplat’s flash-and-thunder score. Yet, unlike 99.9 per cent of recent blockbusters, the film then admirably slows down to set up story strands of (chillingly mounted) family tragedy, anomalous seismic activity, frustrated interrogations, perplexed scientists and all-round conspiracy.

Edwards and credited writer Max Borenstein try their darnedest to legitimise the potentially hokey conceit, smartly respecting the creature’s atomic age roots by imagining the ’50s nuclear tests as attempts to kill off the subterranean creatures and peppering the movie with post-War On Terrorism reference points: jets plummeting out of the sky, carnage playing out on 24-hour rolling news, helicopter shots of refugees escaping to safety, the displaced seeking out loved ones in huge stadia. There is definitely no place for Godzooky in this world.

Yet underneath the patina of realism, Godzilla doesn’t have the story smarts to pull you through. Much of the drama set up in the first 30 minutes bears little consequence later on. The scene work suffers from logic lapses (where does Watanabe get his preternatural understanding of Godzilla’s motives?) or feels just plain fudged — a plan involving a nuclear bomb is unclear and unthrilling.

Edwards creates evocative moments, both small — a slug crawls over a toy tank — and huge — a submarine dangles from a tree — but he has less of a sense of keying it into a narrative imperative. The HALO jumping that everyone loved in the trailer remains fantastic but makes little sense when it appears the army can simply drive into the danger zone. If the movie had a different, more playful tone — Independence Day, for example — all this would be less problematic. But in the credible real world the film seems to want to set up, it just rings dumb.

While the characters may get time to breathe, they don’t emerge as a complex, memorable bunch. For all the great casting, the first-base writing never allows these people to emerge as anything but stock characters. Bryan Cranston is at his most Cranstonish as a man trying to prove a theory deemed crackpot, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a colourless, stoic soldier, a criminally under-utilised Elizabeth Olsen is a wife-mother-nurse permanently stuck on the end of a phone, Ken Watanabe is a noble Japanese scientist who spurts homilies about messing with nature, Sally Hawkins his exposition-clarifying assistant, and David Strathairn labours as a one-note military man. Given, as with most creature features, the humans are bystanders doing practically zilch to affect the outcome, it demanded a more rounded, engaging dramatis personae.

This lack of personality extends to the main monster. In certain respects the Lizard King struggles to register as the star of his own film. Not only does Edwards afford the evil M.U.T.O.s (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Objects) a better introduction — Godzilla’s entrance feels a bit thrown away — the malevolent, moth-like creatures also seem to get longer screen time and more characterful business.

Edwards’ film boasts great filmmaking, noble intentions and cracking monster action. Yet it never reconciles its B-movie origins — preposterous premise, clichéd characters — with its solemn, Nolanised tone. This Godzilla stomps but very rarely romps.

Especially considering how bad the last one was and I've got to say this movie does not disappoint. It has good characters that actually feel real, which is unique considering that most monster movie characters feel bland. However since there is more time donated to the humans in the film the monster aren't seen as much as I would like. Which leads to my biggest problem with the film, the monster fights are cut short. Most of the time in the movie we only see the beginning and end of the fight meaning we don't get to enjoy what made Godzilla infamous. Also they changed Godzilla's origin's, from an experiment gone wrong to a giant creature who lived in prehistoric times while feeding of radiation to survive, yet Godzilla lives at the bottom of the ocean so how does it get radiation? In conclusion if your a long time fan of Godzilla you might want to steer clear, but if you just some one looking for good movie then sit down and give this movie a watch. Expand

The reveal of the big green lizard was one of the most exciting and intense experiences I've had in the cinema in a long time. The VFX are simply jaw-dropping, and at least it TRIES to maintain a human element. I respect the very bold pacing choices, many of which are never seen in tentpoles these days. If you like Godzilla, you owe it to yourself to at least give it a chance. Expand

Unenthusiastically voluntary to the story’s development and cardboard at their worst, it makes the overacted presence of the original films’ characters feel like Academy Award-worthy performances compared to these “characters”, who tend to take a lot from the film it really, really could’ve used. It’s not a bad film by any means and the breathtaking visual effects and setting still makes me excited for upcoming entries. But I wouldn’t nearly award the film as many re-views as I’ve given to even some of the least likable Gojira films that make up a lot of my childhood. Expand

The special effects are pretty moving and the first couple of times Godzilla appears on screen are hair raising. The complaints about not having enough Godzilla are not valid, usually the less you see the monster the more intrigued and kind of scared you are. Not only that but the whole final act shows a lot of Godzilla (in fact, the less interesting part to me). However, a movie like this can not offer character development or a great plot, it´s not its nature, so I cannot give it more than a 6 out of 100. Still, the performances are ok for this type of blockbuster. See it! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sad to say this is my first time finally being able to see wht all the hype was about after being accosted by the many trailers and promos for my favorite movie monster whom i've had the distinct and sometimes not so distinct pleasure of seeing on both the large and small screen as a kid. Loved the various makeovers down through the years as 'zilla went from the ass kicking, one lizard demolition crew to being downright cute in the 70s and back to being a sleep deprived threat to humanity ( lemme tell ya...i'd be pissed too if someone awakened me from a sound sleep) and in the late 90s found a niche as Doritos spokeslizard. Yes, i have the nerve to refer to tht debacle of a movie tht in '98 tht should have remained on the cutting room floor. The only thing tht saved this movie from a much lower rating were the special effects (hence the rating of ''7'') along with the presence of Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche and let us not forget the true star of this movie Godzilla who has of course been working out (check the well toned abs and beautiful white teeth and those ''guns''...niiiiiice! ). After having read the various reviews for this movie, i've noticed the many laments of ''not enough screen time or the murky darkness. At first glance, i too was wondering why the film was so dark and then i saw the final fight between Godzilla and the the mutos and then it hit me: if the fight was staged in broad daylight it would have a devastating effect visually...a waste of perfectly good special effects and who needs tht? I watch to be amazed...to feel the same thrill and awe I did when i first saw the original Gojira. I wanted to see his signature move and have it blow me away and it did just tht! His roar was incredible (awesome sound effects) ..the mutos could've used a little more ....originality in their design but were overall menacing enough to pass muster and quite possibly scare the candy corn out of u if u happen to be below the age of twelve. Because of the length of the movie i'm not entirely certain tht children would be patient enough to wait for the King of the Monsters appearance but once he does show it is well worth the wait. Ok. Anyone taking bets on whether there's a sequel in the works? Hopefully, the makers will improve upon the this treasured franchise enough to do it justice. Expand

The first flaw in the film is that the protagonist of the film was a miserable fail because Aaron Taylor-Johnson simply cannot act. Sure, he did great in Kick-Ass but the reality is that those films are more silly in nature. Godzilla required him to deliver a few scenes that were more serious and emotional and he simply couldn't do it. Making his lack of acting chops even more apparent was the incredible acting of Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen. The other fail in the film was that they tried to artificially manufacture drama in order to add intrigue. All those things did was take away from the film. Honestly, I feel that this movie would've been so much better if it was about 30 minutes shorter. Johnson's lack of acting ability wouldn't have been so pronounced and the ridiculousness of the unrealistic drama wouldn't have existed. Those two adjustments and now we have a legitimately awesome Godzilla film. Expand

"Godzilla" 10 Scale Rating: 5.0 (Mediocre) ...

The Good: Godzilla himself was absolutely fantastic. When he is finally shown in all his glory, he is a sight to behold. Probably the best representation of the famous monster that I have ever seen. The effects were top notch and Godzilla (as well as his adversaries) looked quite real. The story is initially a good one with a setup that grabs your attention. Cranston is great in a supporting role and Taylor-Johnson is adequate, despite playing a very generic character. The final 20 minutes or so of the film were outstanding.

The Bad: If you are hoping to see Godzilla duke it out with monsters for the better part of two hours, you'll walk away disappointed. At the 1:40 mark of a 2:00 film, Godzilla had appeared twice ... briefly. On two occasions, right when Godzilla is about to finally throw down, the scene shifts elsewhere and when it returns, the battle is over and we are instead shown the aftermath. Not until the film's final moments, do we get to see any full on Godzilla action. Godzilla's enemies honestly weren't very spectacular either and looked like rejected designs from "Cloverfield". With a long list of cool and interesting monsters that Godzilla is known for fighting, it is baffling to me why they went this route. Also, the military in this film were shockingly stupid, making poor decisions left and right. The dramatic elements of the film also start to fall apart halfway through as some characters are no longer around. Elizabeth Olsen was a poorly used plot device and brought nothing to the film. Ultimately, the film is a disappointing effort that had vast potential.

At the end Godzilla went back into the ocean and everyone was happy and cheering, I mean come on people there is a giant monster in the middle of the sea he could turn any day and come back to kill or eat you all!The plot was rubbish, the only thing I liked about the film was the idea of bringing Godzilla back but to fight for us. The least they could of done was make it the original's (which was so much better by the way) egg. I actually fell asleep! I hope this has helped you NOT watch this film! Expand

After the dreadful 1998 debacle with Matthew Broderick (where’s he been?), Hank Azaria (where’s he been?) & Jean Reno, I’m confident saying the Godzilla freaks were chalking off days on their calendar like a prisoner chalks off his days on his cell wall. With all this anticipation the new movie had to be a sure hit, if not with the industry then with its fans…Well, let’s take the tour.

The movie should have opened with a disclaimer informing everyone who paid their hard earned cash, or stolen cash, depending on your place in society, that the first 50 minutes or so was going to lull you into dream state where you swear you could hear those 2 adorable Asians twins singing “Mothra, Mothra” At any point during the first hour of this movie of the movie I would have loved to have seen Mothra jump on screen and start kicking ass, not Godzilla’s but Gareth Edwards who directed this movie. Listen, I know the diehard Godzilla fans will say “if you look at all the Godzilla movies you’ll notice the Mean Green stomping Machine has minimal screen time in all of them” Really?? So 28 wrongs shouldn't make a right!

I plopped into my nice comfortable recliner, I’m all comfy eating my popcorn, when, what the hell, It’s the guy from Breaking bad! Hey, I have nothing against Bryan Cranston but at about the time he realizes his on screen wife, Juliette Binoche’ ass is soon going to be a bright nuclear red, I was hoping the rage he was feeling was going to make him shave his head and revert back to his Walter White character if for nothing else but to keep the audience’s attention, which I could swear was starting to hum “Mothra, Mothra”.

Alright, enough of the bashing. All I’m trying to say is that studios spend more money promoting their movies than some small countries spend on keeping their people alive! When the movie does end you leave scratching your head wondering if I just saw a ‘monster” movie or the remake of “A Love Story”? However, a “monster” movie with a plot involving characters that fall in love with each other can work & has. Can you say King Kong? Yes, the beginning of that movie also dragged along a bit in the beginning but Peter Jackson was smart enough to use beauty to keep your attention until Kong arrives, both in the female form, Naomi Watts & in scenery, New Zealand. By the time Kong arrives you’re heart starts to pump just as mine did when I saw Godzilla making waves waiting for him to come on shore and start wreaking havoc. But then all I got was Godzilla walking with his back to the viewers! What the what?? Hell, my heart wasn’t pumping anymore, it was barely beating.

Jackson had enough sense to hit you full blast with Kong, taking no prisoners. Had Jackson taken Edwards approach just showing Kong’s ass, we would have been wondering why only his ass & was Kong going to take a sh!t on some of the tribesmen? Here is my thought to the studios that are willing to spend millions on strategy & concept and have no sense on what the public wants. We came to see Godzilla!

Let me put it to you this way. Would Paramount or Universal do a remake of the Godfather using Judd Apatow as their director? Hell no! They would track down Ridley Scott or Martin Scorsese. So why would Warner Brothers sign an unknown director with minimal experience to direct a nostalgic “Monster” movie we all grew up with? Godzilla deserved better! This one should have been a 9 or 10 but ends up with a 6.

Amazing monsters and beautiful(ly tragic) cityscapes are in no short supply, and the lighting and cinematography are there to match. The monsters themselves have a story (albeit somewhat clumsily exposited by the human cast) that is actually compelling.

Sadly, however, this movie - like many creature features before it - suffers from "cardboard human syndrome." The human characters are largely flat, uninteresting, and shallow as a kiddie pool, whose only purpose is to serve as a vehicle to deliver the awesome monsters. This would be fine, if the movie didn't spend three quarters of its screen time devoted to the humans, and not the aforementioned awesome monsters.

But, come on. It's giant monsters battling in gorgeously rendered cityscapes. That's why we watch it, that's why we love it. Still, even a little bit of depth in the human characters would be nice.

On a side note, Watanabe and Cranston give by far the best deliveries in the film, which is sad considering their soap opera dialogue and relegation to bit parts. Such a glorious waste of talent.

The tension is real, the characters believable, and the destruction is glorious. A perfect melding of the original Japanese mentality towards the series with American writing and filmmaking. I found myself to be completely absorbed in it and enthralled by it.

There's definitely more of a focus on the human element and characters, which clearly has disappointed some. Personally I don't feel the movie could have succeeded quite in the same way. This movie has the potential to please audiences new and old. If they had just focused on Godzilla himself then this would've only appealed to old-school Godzilla fans. It would've also lost the realistic feel this movie has. Honestly I see it as the best of both worlds, and I loved old-school, Japanese Godzilla.

The movie doesn't skip out on it's monster though. Godzilla is still here in all his magnificence, and director Gareth Edwards just loves to show off his massive size. I love how Godzilla is portrayed in this film, and I can't wait for the sequels this movie sets up for. It's a perfect introduction to Godzilla, and what is hopefully the start of a new series of films.

The tension builds to perfection in this movie. It's an absolute blast to behold and it had me sitting on the edge of my seat in suspense many times throughout. It's an absolute masterpiece of a monster movie, and one that I recommend be at the top of your must-watch list.

Although not a cinematic masterpiece by any means, Godzilla is in fact a monster-filled extravaganza that when the monsters are on screen (either Godzilla or the Muto's) is truly excellent. The Kaijus look fantastic and every shot feels like a painting of perfect coloring and composition.

Then, there's the human factor of the movie. Which holds it back from achieving excellent. I refuse to accept this tag-on human stories just because its "big budget Hollywood". That doesn't mean anything at all.

A lot of people complain that Godzilla is not in the movie often enough. That's true, yet there's no shortage of Monster mayhem thanks to the presence of the Mutos. Which are a fantastic addition to the roster of Kaijus in Godzilla's lore.

I honestly can't wait for a sequel to this movie. But as it stands, Pacific Rim is a better Kaiju movie overall, but when Godzilla is good and the monsters are on screen, it beats Pacific Rim. Yet, it's obvious that unlike Pacific Rim, Godzilla was not intended to be a pure Kaiju movie. It was intended to be part that and mostly a disaster movie. Which is not bad if the human aspect of the story was better...

Nasty, very large praying mantises. (3) Pretty awful acting. I checked out the hero's bio and was shocked to find that he is not a graduate of a pre-school acting academy. His disturbed, vacant stares into the distance gave me that impression. (4) Turn some damn lights on! What are you hiding? Mediocre and unimaginative CGI? I mean, this movie was and still is the ultimate tease! Ten years later after "Godzilla Final Wars" (Amazing movie by the way for those true Godzilla fans) traditional fans are left with this garbage. Besides my rant, let's get into a few details. (1) I barely saw Godzilla. (2) Every time MUTO and G-Man were about to brawl it out, for some d**n reason the scene was cut off. All of the fighting took place on the TVs IN the movie, that's ridiculous! I wish I was watching those televisions besides this mediocre garbage. Anyways, (3) Ending barely made sense. This so called "massive bomb" had successfully evacuated the area, by the terrible-acted-protagonist, in less than 5 min on a mini boat. THAT'S A MIRACLE! There are many more awful parts to this movie but to spare my fingers of typing 5000 characters, I'll end here for this movie doesn't even deserve my rant. Hopefully this disgrace does not carry out a complete trilogy. Best case scenario, Japan make their own Godzilla film and show America once again what a true Godzilla film looks like. This movie barely scores higher than 1998 Godzilla. I would score the 1998 version a -10 if i could. Expand

So when I heard that it’s going to be rebootedI remember watching the previous Hollywood attempt on Godzilla as a kid. I was confused, bored and I had my eyes rolling. It showed that I do not like every blockbuster I have seen as a child. So when I heard that it’s going to be rebooted but this time in a much darker tone, I had high hopes and it did not disappoint, barely.

The plot is well-crafted for a monster movie like Godzilla. It’s quite thought-provoking. I thought about how the world is dealing with the aftermath of Godzilla.

The cast performances was okay. Bryan Cranston’s performance is really excellent to watch. I really enjoyed him as an actor and as a person and I really forgot that he is Heisenberg when I was watching his scenes. As for Aaron Taylor Johnson’s performance, I am sure he is a nice guy but during the entire movie, all I could think of his character is that he is played by Aaron Taylor Johnson. So, I am so sad to agree with people saying that he is a terrible actor in this movie.

The character development is actually really good. It made me care enough for the human characters in this movie.

The CGI and visual effects are perfect and realistic. It actually looked like San Francisco is really in ruins. The monster designs of Godzilla and MUTO are really well done that they are very scary to look at.

The direction from Gareth Edwards is also excellent. The cinematography was also really good for a movie like Godzilla.

The dark tone of this movie really paid tribute and respected to Godzilla’s legacy. It seems like Hollywood already forgot about its previous disastrous attempt.

Overall, not the best movie ever but it’s a really good monster movie that I enjoyed watching. I am looking forward to the sequels and it would be interesting how it would take the story from there.

I had expected so much more going in, from all the hype and glowing reviews, I had thought it would be something of a masterpiece (as far as Godzilla movies are concerned.)

But its not (at least not for me.) For a movie called Godzilla, Godzilla is barely in it. I'm aware that it was the same in the original (the original original, not the Broderick one) but the original was due to budget and the effects available at the time. 2014 Godzilla does not have that luxury. Even the Broderick Godzilla had more screen time.

Still when Godzilla is there, he's F**KING AWESOME!! I guess that is why it annoys me that he isn't in the movie more. Godzilla was done right. *sigh*

As for the non-Godzilla moments: Cranston is fantastic, I really wonder why on earth he wasn't in the movie more? Had he been a more central character for the whole movie, then this movie would have been absolutely brilliant. Watanabe is also great, but again, he's barely in the movie and his role feels mostly needless. As for the rest of the cast: *meh* nothing special.

Overall:
I guess as far as modern Godzilla movies are concerned this is the best we are going to get. I hope for the sequel they remember who the star is (see title for hint.)

Cons: Aaron Taylor-Johnson is nothing more than a discount Channing Tatum/James Franco combination with a horrific US accent, most of the other characters are two-dimensional at best, Gareth Edwards or whoever the photography or editing team seem to be obsessed with using too many filters at the same time to create seemingly nice but ultimately hard to look at pictures, and the mere fact that we barely see any fights until the very end gets frustrating in the end.

The creators spent a lot of the movie explaining the existence of Godzilla and his origin. Of course it is logical to tackle that subject and explain why and how Godzilla came to be on earth and what awoke him to begin with. The movie leaves the viewer constantly deciding to love or hate Godzilla in respect - or fear - of his awesome power and dangerous presence. In the end, Godzilla unfortunately is a bit camera shy and doesn't make much of an appearance. Overall, the quality of the movie is great and goes much beyond action and explosions. The good thing about the story-telling style of this film is that if there is ever a sequel (for some reason) then Godzilla will not need any more explanation as to why he is on earth. There are characters throughout the movie as well but they all fail to captivate the viewer, but instead are simply tools used to drive the plot further. There is not much of an emotional attachment to the main character, instead I felt more attachment to Godzilla himself - not to mention I am sure that we were all cheering him on at some point - knowing full well that the main character consistently remained virtually powerless against the odds.

If you watch Godzilla, expect a lot of amazing detail, graphics, explosions, and talking! If you are a fan of Godzilla (or just want to wash the bad taste of the 1998 release "Godzilla" out of your mouth) then this movie is definitely for you!

TheAs a massive Godzilla fan, I was a bit of a skeptic going into this movie, but as time went on and the more I learned about it the more excited I became. I was not disappointed, but yet I was a little bit. This movie did Godzilla right. The monster I mean, his character was just what he needed to be. This was very important to me and I was happy to see it, considering how wrongly done the 1998 version was. Overall, the movie isn't really anything special, the cast is a bit lackluster and the acting/script isn't much either. It drags on for a long time and Godzilla is seen few and far. Director Edwards went on and on about this "cinematic foreplay" he would be using and I was surprised how much of it was used. We were TEASED with Godzilla. Showing fights but then not really and stuff like this. I initially was very frustrated by this, but after a second and third watch see what he was going for. The combat in the end is stunning. Absolutely jaw dropping. Technology has truly come far to create the king of monsters and his foes so perfectly. Now I don't speak for everyone, but I would estimate that if you are a godzilla fan like myself, this movie is generally between 7/10 and 10/10 and if you are not, I would say 5/10 to 8/10. It depends on how much you are willing to put up with to get to the monster. Overall, I'm pleased with the reboot. The king is back and next movie needs to be intense. I feel Edwards was afraid to just go all out with this movie and make it a monster bash for fear of harsh criticism, so they really tried to use human feeling in this, that's fine and all, but I would hope at some point we can get to a monster bash movie. I won't complain too much, but with all these visual effects, a destroy all monsters type movie would instantly be one of the greatest movies of all time in my opinion. I will give Godzilla (2014) an 8/10. Good movie, not a great movie, +points because GODZILLA Expand

Just forget godzilla(1999).
This new godzilla it' s completely another thing.
The main problem is that now godzilla is a strange creature between dragon and dinosaur.
the twists are also too much foregone.

So Godzilla was my big movie the year, the one I was most hyped for, the one I paid the most attention too, I watched all the trailers, and you know what I think? I liked it
It wasn't quite what I was expecting (Mostly when it comes to Godzilla's screen time) but overall I liked it.
I thought they did a good job of restarting the series and keeping it grounded, at-least as much as possible. I like how the monsters were presented, not just unstoppable giant monsters (which they are) but also as animals (M.U.T.O.s just wanna breed, Godzilla's their natural enemy and nature's way of restoring balance) was really cool.
The M.U.T.O.'s I thought were okay, but Godzilla himself was just awesome. Sure he's not in the film a whole lot (9 minutes and 30 seconds according to a completion video on youtube, felt more like 15 to me). But every second he was on screen I was in complete awe, (I got more excited at just the first atomic breath scene, then I did all the action in Pacific Rim put together) I hear some people complain about making Godzilla a good guy, I don't think it's so much he was a good guy exactly, more like he just didn't care enough about us to mean us harm or not. I personally prefer a more morally ambiguous Godzilla (not really good, not really evil) but if I had to chose between the two I would choose good (So I feel less guilty about cheering for him)
I hear some complaints about the human characters, cept Bryan Cranston who is without a doubt the best performance in the film (That's coming from a guy who's never seen a episode of Breaking Bad, I now aim to watch the series from the beginning, seriously shame on Warner Bros for turning him down as Lex Luthor)
My personal favorite character was Ken Watanabe as Dr Serizawa (Not as cool as the original, but interesting) I hope he goes on to become the main human character in the sequels. Elizabeth Olsen, I think she did a good job, she didn't get to do much, but I don't think it's really her acting that's too blame. She was basically a character we could watch go though this crisis that is a giant monster attack (I'll bring that up again),
Then Aaron Taylor-Johnson, my personal opinion, the guy's playing a soldier, someone who's trained to be emotionally reserved, still overall I don't think he was that bad. I'm use to him as Kick-Ass, who's a very light-hearted and funny character, because of this I feared he would be a repeat of Matthew Broderick from the 1998 one, so he was better then I thought he'd be.
Another thing I like about the film is that, similar to the 1954 film, it felt like a natural disaster film. We see a lot of focus on the aftermath of the destruction, in the end we see rescue efforts, families torn apart, news reports, we see people worry about the safety of their loved ones. It just felt like a disaster movie, I went to see it with two of my classmates (we're film students) and me and another student were actually reminded of the rescue efforts after 9/11 during the final scene.
I know some people weren't completely satisfied with this movie, and that's okay. But for me, I loved it, and I plan to get the DVD and I'll definitely go see the sequel.

I bring that up because they both had the same problem. They had very key components that make great movies that they just fumbled with and squandered away. The only characters that seemed to drive the plot anywhere ended up dying or just timidly disappearing from the moment. And Godzilla is this like god of earth who balances all nature who saves man from catastrophe, and he just wants to help us. I mean because that was clear right? He just pretty much destroys any city he walks into and doesn't seem to be all that great of a fighter either. I wanted fight scenes of Pacific Rim proportions, couldn't even give that to us. Godzilla is a Japanese baby, and they tried to make it American, if you follow me, and they failed. It was hard to sit through this one without laughing at what they managed to get away with in this movies. They possessed good footholds in the beginning of the movie and created a unique way to look at the Godzilla creatures and their mythology. But certain scenes and certain plot points nosedived everything. Too many holes. This makes he 1990s one look golden. For shame. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why do I keep doing this to myself? This movie is awful on all fronts. Every single aspect of this movie is terrible and stupid - the plot, the subplot, the superplot, the dialogue, acting. Even the special effects are lame. I hope they paid Cranston piles and piles of $ to compromise his acting career in this fashion. He was trying to act like crazy in a wholesomely futile and purposeless effort, and all he succeeded to do is to look ridiculous. At least they put him out of his misery quickly. Don't even get me started on Juliette Binoche. What the hell is she doing in this fiasco. She dies quicker than Cranston so maybe she hopes no one really noticed her. I marked this review to contain spoilers, but there's no spoiling this movie. It is spoiled beyond anything I can reveal here, and revealing how terrible this movie is can only help people's lives and I feel that it is my citizen's duty to do so. Here goes: the movie ends with Godzilla being cheered by masses because he had just killed the other two monsters (hybrids between a bat, the alien, praying mantis, and early days of robotics) with his dragon breath. His motive was to restore balance?!?! Humans are quite inconsequential, and they all act like bunch of people who just don't care and are fully aware that all of it is just make believe. Anyhow, give it a wide berth. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me Go with the BAD stuff first.

The Trailers of the film are mostly false advertising, and the movie does not really portray GODZILLA the way it did in the trailers......
and the King himself receives a very poor amount of screen time for a 2 hr movie, and they cut away a couple times, up to the point where it will frustrate you.
Most of the human characters are bland, But they're not bad either, just not good to the point where you would care for them.
Only one I actually cared for was Bryan Cranston but he sadly doesn't get a whole lot of screen time either.

The GOOD parts:
The CGI, animation is done very well, even sometimes where they are shown in the dark, looked pretty good for my taste.
The monster designs are GREAT ,The MUTOs that Godzilla fight may have some simularities with CLOVERFIELD, but I find them interesting.
The monster fight scenes are great as well at the end.
Some of the tension build up is also pretty good.
And the humans encountering with the monsters is also GREAT.

Bottom Line
It stands good as a GODZILLA movie which is why I give it a 7/10

but as a film that lives up to the trailers I give it a 5/10.

I know you can argue that the Toho movies had bad acting to but at least they were interesting. If the humans aren't interesting in a monster where 90% of the movie is bored humans failing to act scared. I actually don't mind that much that Godzilla isn't in it that much since in some of the great Godzilla movies he doesn't show for a while, but what those movies did that this one doesn't was give some great battles when he is there. Seriously the movie has 1 fight scene and while it was great it set up 2 more but makes you watch more of the boring humans. I would have understood if there was only one conflict but don't tease me. I hope the sequel will improve upon these mistakes. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the beginning (first10-20mins): great! it's a great start etc. the scenes with the scientists were very interesting.

middlepart: holy crap. i dont know how they could destroy that athmosphere but it gets very boring pretty quickly. the movie is 123 mins long and they spend like 80-90 minutes on a soldier with a very flat character. the movie is already long as hell but they thought "hey, let's stretch it some more" by including scenes that did NOTHING to the plot.
1st example: that japanese boy. he got seperated from his parents at a trainstation(boy in the train, parents at the station. doors refuse to re-open). the "protagonist" tries to tell the parents that they will wait at the next station for them. that happened at daylight. shortly after it's already PITCH BLACK OUTSIDE and they're still in that one train. oh and yeah, a giant monster attacks and guess what: the train conductor keeps driving that train until he is like 10m away from him. he was clearly visible even at night. (ill cut this short now) all of this stuff just to give the "protagonist" some "character". but that sheet didn't get a single dent. he appeared still very flat to me. all those scenes were like 10-15 min long IIRC and wouldnt hurt the film if they were cut off.

2nd example: the dog. sigh. "oh no there is a dog leashed on a palm while a giant wave is coming". gj on stretching another 2 mins or more.

overall consists the middle part out of endless long (somewhat) "lone soldier" scenes. honestly it barely adds to the plot and stretches this movie unnecessary long. i sat in the cinema and BEGGED this movie to end. it was unbearable.

the endpart(last 20 mins) oh boy, THE part everyone was looking for. godzilla fight! yisss
very nice effects, very nice attacks. that part really shines after that horrific middle part

TL;DR
if the middle part would get cut to a minimum it would be an easy 8-9/10.

Not as good as the expectations, but it’s still an massive and entertaining movie that’s worth paying for.

This Godzilla reboot is both massive and highly unique, and the directing is just something spectacular. Gareth Edwards is one director I’m not familiar with, but with this movie he truly kept me interested. The things that truly stands out with this movie is the epic soundtrack, the CGI and massive and unique scenes that I never have seen before. There are much awesome things with this movie, but it got some critical downsides. The aspects of the movie that I find most disturbing is that there could have been more scenes with Godzilla, it felt like the focus of the film is on other things. Another critical thing is that it could have had more action sequences, and that some choices that some characters did isn’t well thought through. Aaron Taylor-Johnson isn’t the best actor for the main role, I think they should focused more on Bryan Cranston, who is an flawless actor. The final critical thing with Godzilla is that one of the main characters died, and I think that ruined the movie, but also that the ending could have been more entertaining.

My conclusion of Godzilla is that it’s an cool and massive movie that's well directed, but it got some critical things that lowers my rating.

Godzilla get a 7/10

If there was ever a time that you needed to take a sleeping pill to go to sleep, put them back in the medicine cabinet and just load this movie!! This was the worse movie that I have seen in a long long time. Thank god it was just my sister and me that watched for movie night. My nephew was asleep 15 minutes into the movie. Horrible acting, no substance from any supporting actors or actress. The only good actor was Bryan Cranston. My sister and are truly convinced the he demanded a contract renegotiation and begged to be killed off early. There were scenes that made absolutely no common sense. Point in case, there was a scene where the entire building was demolished no roof no walls and dang near no floor except one door that they could have literally walked around but instead the director demanded that they go through a door that had noearthly reason to nbe there. And don't get me on how these Marines traveled from Japan to Hawaii and then to San Francisco then to Las Vegas all in a 10 minute span The most enjoyable part was reading all the bad reviews and knowing that we were not alone. My sister and I could not stop laughing. I honestly almost peed on myself we were laughing so hard. That was 2 hours of our life we can never get back. Do yourself a favor and watch a few snails race because that is how paiful this movie really was.

Destruction, destruction .. and well, even more destruction. Chances are if someone had approached me a year or two ago, and told me I was going to fall in love with the re-imagining of “Godzilla”, I would have proceeded to call you, and IDestruction, destruction .. and well, even more destruction. Chances are if someone had approached me a year or two ago, and told me I was going to fall in love with the re-imagining of “Godzilla”, I would have proceeded to call you, and I quote “A crazy lunatic”. Thankfully, no-one approached me with such an acquisition
Because, like everyone else, nobody thought a remake of “Godzilla” would be as lively, thought provoking, and most importantly, character driven. I remember scrounging on my laptop a couple years ago, squawking at the news of another “Godzilla” film. I mean, did you see the 1998 Roland Emmerich directed version? .. for your sake I hope not. Small time director Gareth Edwards (his only previous film was a small indie flick called “Monsters” currently available on Netflix streaming). I digress, Edwards had so much to prove to such a fanbase of a film. Not only does this crew succeed, they have obliterated any bad taste that the forsaken ‘98’ version left inside everyone’s mouth.

Where to begin is such a question of concern, there is so much ground to cover. While yes indeed the film is called “Godzilla” trust me, you are not reading your ticket stub wrong. The point I’m attempting to make is, “Godzilla” has his presence in the film. However, Edwards does a flawless job at executing characters that we (the audience) can actually relate and appreciate. I found that to be the film’s greater strengths. The ability to capture the emotional integrity that make this film worth investing in.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick Ass) has finally made a film worth writing home about, (only joking, I loved the Kick Ass films). The film is told across a few spanning time periods. After a nuclear power plant outside of Tokyo leaves the city in ruins, and eventually a quarantine zone. 15 years later, former plant supervisor, Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) is still coping with the loss of his wife, in the tragic accident and the distraught relationship with his son. Ford (Johnson) who is now an explosive ordinance disposal officer. With a wife, Ellie (Elizabeth Olsen) and son living in San Francisco. One thing leads to another, and eventually, something awakens. Another being, from inside the old plant. A “MUTO” or Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism. Causing a tundra of mayhem. and an other worldly creature known as “Godzilla” to surface. Let the games begin.

I was meaglery impressed with the ambition behind these filmmakers, and staying true to their authentic source material. Not settling for generic monster designs, and boring spectacle. In fact something “real” and dare I say … original? (GASP!). Yes those words are correct. Shot in stunning 3D. The world’s biggest monster, should be captured on the biggest screen. (IMAX 3D is nothing short of breathtaking). When the big fiery monster lets out his first roar, you better hold on for a fun ride. Although, the big friendly giant does not make his first screen appearance till an hour into the picture. The build up is spectacular. The claws spiking out of the pacific ocean, or the shadow in the dust. The talins in the distance. These feelings are suspenseful and mind bending. They only add to the intensity.

(May contain minor spoilers) Of course, the film has some very minor flaws (very minor) this is just me being picky. For starters, the wife (Elizabeth Olsen) was a basic throwaway character that added nothing to the plot. Other than to add that whole relationship (which makes sense, I understand, people want a love story). I also felt that some of the cast was underutilized. Most importantly, Bryan Cranston. For the very brief time we see Cranston, he turns in one caliber of a performance. For being nearly sixty years old, the man is a true gem to watch on screen. Aside from these minor instances, the film runs very smoothly.

The visual effects team worked tirelessly and this easily shows through the many layers, the film possesses. The climax in its entirety is something for the record books (and bought my sold out crowd to roaring applause). Something that rarely happens screening a film is my ability to suspend all and every disbelief. Sure, to an extent you need to, A movie like “Godzilla” requires that and more. The entire two hour run-time I was immersed in an experience that makes going to the movies, awesome.

From the outstanding cast, director and visual effects team. Everything works for this re-imagining of “Godzilla” from the tight, dense and eagerly pleasing screenplay, to the final battle that is .. jawdropping. Gareth Edwards has not only pleased his many fans, but has subdued himself into full throttle, as one of the best directors stylizing films today. I had such a blast watching our titular hero going to work. Amidst all the destruction, there is a plot that is character focused, and can pull on the heart-tugs. “Godzilla” has roared, and everyone around the world has heard him. One of the best films so far this year.

You go see this movie to see the second hour of the film, where Godzilla fights the opposing giant monster, destroys the city, and just be an overall badass. The effects in this film are great no question, but they needed to focus on the main character of the movie more than anything, that is Godzilla and no one else. Expand

The laughably cliqued dialogue and one dimensional characters who spend an inordinate amount of their considerable screen time open mouthed and staring above or open mouthed and frowning drag pace to a crawl. A safe option would be to give the film a miss and instead watch the two minute trailer which revealed the only interesting and well done parts of one of the dullest blockbusters ever witnessed by man, beast or winged preying mantis.
