The storyline is great it makes all sense the action was mind blowing, as well as the special effects. This movie has great potential for awards in my eyes and I dear do hope it gains an award for the Oscars. It starts of a bit blunt but as you get further into this film you start to understand it a bit more as it shows photos and suspicious videos from 15 years ago or so. Godzilla is literally a God in this movie, he has incredible power and is perfect for the film.

Godzilla a must see movie for all!!!

I'm on the side of viewers that liked the idea of building tension for Godzilla, and the ending was pretty solid and ultimately a good climax. My criticisms include the poor acting from almost everyone other than Canston. Aaron Johnson is pretty bad guys, I don't think this kid can carry a lead role yet. I mean he has like two total expressions throughout the movie. He barely shows emotion from his father's death and gets over it extremely quick. Doesn't panic or seem to care when MUTO or Godzilla shows, that bothered me throughout the movie how poor of an actor he was. Visuals were great....but i don't understand the purpose for the NAVY skydiving out of that plane. All they did was land on the ground, they could've just flew down there with the plane.. The two monsters weren't worried about anyone else unless u attacked them. They were tryna fight each other. I guess that was evidently done for the purpose of a good stunt and visual nothing else. And yes MUTO probably overshadowed Godzilla a little bit. The MUTO did seem like it was the main monster for awhile. Overall, I can't really give this movie anything spectacular, it was good enough for me to enjoy however. Was not bad at all but nothing in this movie put it over the top. There were some errors that deducted it... Expand

Enter Gareth Edwards and the team behind Legendary. What we have is a film that respects its origins as a kaiju movie, while trying hard to balance it with modern sensibilities. Sure by showing the monsters from an 'ordinary man' perspective and delaying the monsters' reveal, Edwards made a creative choice that is artistic but controversial at the same time. It would have worked wonderfully if the characters are strong like in Spielberg's earlier efforts (Jaws, Close Encounters..) But Aaron Taylor's character is not compelling that it almost derails the whole film. (a weakness of old Japanese Godzilla films too in fact) Thank goodness for the kick ass monster action and spectacle, while reserved for the final third, was so great that you don't mind those boring bits. Great re-start of the franchise..essentially 'Godzilla Begins'. Can't wait for the next installments when classic monsters such as Mothra and Ghidorah are re-introduced. Expand

The human story in between is interesting and it pays off. This is a movie that must be seen in theaters for the audio alone, because when Godzilla roars, it is epic. The score is good and the visuals are spectacular. Cinematography is great. My only real complaint is that Bryan Cranston feels underused and a particular scene that I will not mention because that would be spoiling it. Go see Godzilla. Expand

While it's human characters don't leave a lasting impact (with the exception of Bryan Cranston), Godzilla compensates with plenty of action and an overall eerie tone not found in other epic monster movies.

If there's one thing this film does right its building tension. At the centre of this is Brian Cranston's brilliantly developed and well acted character. However they kill him of so quickly he might as well not of been there... Which is a shame because he's the only interesting character in the film! Everyone else is a generic, one dimensional stereotype, devoid of any character or personality. This is made even worse by the fact you'll be spending 3 quarters of the film with them! And that's not cool. The problem is there's no payoff. While the last fight scene is good, it just feels unsatisfying, which then leads to a rushed ending that's obviously setting up a sequel. Overall its jut mediocre. Expand

Gareth Edwards has incorporated all of the elements of the mid-50s tradition into a contemporary film that has several significant messages for our time, and is an absolute blast to watch. His opening credits, which no one seems to have noticed, focus on the very immediate crisis of government concealment of truth and prosecution of whistle-blowers. Note how he "whites out" information about the filmmakers and actors against background imagery of everything from Darwin's Origin of Species to classified documents on nuclear testing. The other themes have been much discussed and usually mistakenly by conventional movie reviewers who really have no idea what they are watching. This is a monster movie about the relationship between individual and state, and between individual and nature. Don't miss it! Blow-off the latest vacuous romantic comedy or the next BS transformers regurgitation. Godzilla is the real thing. Expand

You have to sit through a "human" story that is not all that involving, you get a peak of Godzilla or another monster now and then, building to a brief ending where Godzilla and company strut their stuff. Technically the film is great, and when Godzilla finally struts is stuff, he kicks ass awesomely. The director obviously is influenced by Spielberg and "JAWS", too bad the human story couldn't have delivered. This does need to be seen on the big screen, so you can enjoy the impact Godzilla makes. What should have been a fun monster mashing spectacle ended up being a strange disjointed character drama with absolutely no character. The film was awfully paced, almost absolutely devoid of tension and undermined by a horrible script and ham fisted references to Hiroshima. Also, the removal of the only strong lead in the film so early on, left the last two thirds of the film with a cast that had no emotional push or screen presence whatsoever (Aaron Taylor Johnson doesn't exactly demand one's attention). Luckily, Godzilla and the other kaiju looked tremendously good and what little of them we actually see was fun. It's just a shame that everything else in the film is just so thoroughly boring and lacking in emotion and heart. A true B movie in that respect then I guess. Expand

For me we've seen this before and what I thought was more entertaining sci fi in Pacific Rim. Though that movie was from perfect as well. It seems that directors cannot quiet please everyone on these monster movies or strike a balance with how much a monster should be shown. I like how Pacific Rim came right out the gate and got into the monsters. Then you have Peter Jackson King Kong..which practically ran an hour and half until you saw the Monster. True character development is important but uninteresting character development can a weigh a movie down. I thought this was the case with Godzilla, it seemed that there were much more interesting things going on than what Aaron Taylor was talking about. He seemed like a very straight forward lead, where as Byron Cranston was much more colorful but was killed in the first 1/4 of the movie. Expand

And Godzilla totally fails in this attempt. The visuals are stunning. The monsters in the movie look over engineered and the audience are unable to comprehend what they are looking at. This is neither a monster movie, nor a disaster flick but tries to achieve both and fails in both aspects. The human characters are underdeveloped and the monsters are overdeveloped to an extent that if you are not a pre-teen audience or a die hard Godzilla fan, this movie would be an ordeal to sit through. The plot is silly and incomplete with most of the times some unknown character look at the sky with awe. The flying monsters are so synthetic looking, you get tired of looking at them for the second time. Godzilla is an evidence that both Hollywood and the American audience are losing their taste in movies with substance, and are leaning towards eye candy, synthetic extravaganza with no life in the content. To sum it up as succinctly as possible: the director wanted to do a modern remake of a classic Godzilla movie. Unfortunately he chose to remake a really *bad* one. The trailers use Cranston to sell the pic and the movie isn't really even about him, and he's in less than half of it. The monsters seem to be able to become silent and invisible at will, Godzilla's place in the film is barely explained (and poorly at that), the Japanese scientist pulls theories from thin air based on NO data whatsoever but which somehow turn out to be correct. Its a painful watch, and just seeing the Big G stomping around for a little while in classic form isn't nearly enough to save this clunker. A rental at best, but honestly you'd be better off re-watching a GOOD giant monster film like Pacific Rim. Expand

Worst movie from this year... Keep the 1999 version in your mind! and keep it safe!

Visually speaking.. Stunning! Sound... very good also! the rest... oh my god...humans are stupid in the movie. Spoiler: Go to the place where you keep all your radioactive waste, but as you go there you go with a bang (cars, trucks, helicopters, the full load) and you star picking at every little window on the silo to see if is there something wrong... until o see one where light comes out... and you open the door and find out that you have a 10 mile hole in the entire nuclear waste silo ceiling.. that no one ever noticed before... WTF??? that is just one of many...... And the part where godzilla after engaging the monsters goes into sleep mode... WTF???? and after a quick nap it just gets up, and walks away... WTF???

In the movie you can see all the references to some past events, like the tsunami in indonesia, the colapsing of towers.... nuclear disaster in fukujima... and at the end see the fat godzilla kamehameha the **** of a giant moth..... enough said! dont waste your Money on it

This is successfully achieved as the film proposes a darker, grittier and more authentic feel than its predecessor.
Godzilla is sleek ,beautifully crafted and it's obvious that the studio spared no expense in rendering a Hollywood monster that would leave audiences wanting more. Unfortunately this is to the detriment of the film itself as the title character is more often than not overshadowed by both it's Kaiju and human opposition.
Edwards' attempt at blending both monster porn and a compelling story of human courage ultimately misfires as he fails to strike the mean between both approaches. These two primary concepts are underdeveloped and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's bland cliched performance highlights the lack of attention given to characters who show less life than there primordial counterparts.
However Edwards does step up to the mainstream with confidence and his Spielbergian influences add some degree of quality to an altogether under-whelming experience. The slow tease introduction of the showpiece à la Spielberg's Jaws is certainly a step in the right direction but the lack of a payoff ultimately negates the positive intentions. This along with the never thoroughly explored 'Man versus Nature' angle only aids in emphasizing how much more this film could and should have been.
Although sandwiched between some heavy hitting summer blockbusters, such as X-men, Godzilla is sure to attract significant audience numbers but with the final product delivering less Jurassic Park and more Lost World, it is undecided as to whether or not this is the film that will resurrect a franchise already dead in the water.

The Godzilla movie reaching 93 million dollar in 4 days that is success for the film but there is a question here how the movie get this number?
The first reason of course the name of movie and the second reason is the film Depends on Technique, Technology and tricks But there are Negative side in the movie the story is weak without content and when you see the film you feel like see film build from rocks without happiness or sadness feelings and the Plot is so weak Which gave the impression the film production just for money not for the Entertain audience or to send a good message and there Confirmation on the global Level and local level the Cinema now is just for the money not for the Art

Brian had the good sense to be killed off in the first 30 minutes. The rest of the actors would have been laughed at in a High School production. The script was inept with more plot holes than Carter has little liver pills. The directing was abominable. I wouldn't watch this horrible movie again even when on FREE TV. How bad was this Godzilla? The ONLY THING that humans contribute to in this film is the awakening of the three beasts. After this, none of their actions matter. In fact, the human characters actually MAKE THINGS WORSE by trying to use atomic bombs. So you could literally remove the human characters from the equation, and not much would change.

Second, the actual meaty part of the film - the monster feature - wasn't executed very well. For one thing, we barely get to see much of Godzilla and his two adversaries. The only major fight happens in the ending of the film - out of a running time of two hours!

I also really dislike how they handled Cranston's character. He was the best thing about this film, and they just decide to kill him off early on to make the film easier to write.

On top of this, the human plot of the film follows a very formulaic Holywood formula which prevents us from caring much about the characters. Ken Watanabee literally spends the ENTIRE FILM with the same crazed "oh my god" expression on his face and the same crazy dialogue, while his female "assistant" is only there for exposition. Pretty much every character is this film is a stereotype.

Having said that, I did enjoy the backstory that they set up for Godzilla and the MUTOs (particularly the part about the atomic bomb "tests" in the 1950s). And watching giant monsters wreck cities was fun as well. But overall this film is quite disappointing.

and a star for the CGA Slavies, rolling their eyes at their overlords marching orders and dutifully doing their bidding.
Watching colorful CGA Monsters destroy colorful CGA Cities and other gratuitous twaddle; - Is so much like watching colorful Paint dry.

As someone who's first Godzilla film was this one, I was severely disappointed.
Fresh out of Pacific Rim, where the battles were intense and the chaos was satisfying, this one seemed lacking and confused in aim. The film suffers immediately with the cliched military man and his 'save my family' story we've seen a million times. The only good acting was from Bryan Cranston, but he's not even in the movie for long. Oddly enough, the movie seems devout on maintaining focus on Aaron Taylor-Johnson and not, well you know, Godzilla!? Every bit of tension in the film is either without a satisfying payoff, or is cut short with a transition to Mr and Mrs. Cliche. Three times too many you expect Godzilla to do his thing, but nope, just a tease. It's frustrating to endure as you are expected to just shrug off potential epic monster battles.

Many are comparing this film to Pacific Rim, saying the action there was frequent but the story was lacking and Godzilla is the opposite. I agree with this, but even in this regard I prefer Pacific Rim far more. It's a monster film, so it's fair to expect it to be about monsters wrecking cities and not whether one guy saves his family. The film plays with your expectations like crazy, ultimately driving you crazy.

To its credit, the visuals are amazing and the cinematics spectacular. Godzilla himself looks and moves exactly as you would expect. The new kaiju are sinister looking and cool as hell, but it feels as though they steal the show from The King of Monsters, especially when Godzilla is way too late to the party. In the couple of fight scenes that he's in you barely feel the need to root for him because the film's excuse for him being there is simply ridiculous. I feel the story is the worst part about the film despite it being the main focus, and the action alone fails to carry the entire movie.

Great visuals with a brilliant Godzilla rendition, but the story is cliched and a chore to watch, while the action struggles to generate any tension and even when it does it always falls flat. Usually I wouldn't recommend a film I dislike, but audiences seem to be completely split down the middle (even some extreme Godzilla fans dislike it) so I would say watch it as a gamble just to see whether or not you like it. If you expect action and epic destruction though, go see Pacific Rim instead.

From Bryan Cranston, Aaron Johnson, to Godzilla itself, every character was forgettable. Some more so, such as Ken Watanabe (hired him mostly so he can say its name "Godzilla" with a close up shot) and Sally Hawkins (hired her mostly so someone can introduce Ken Watanabe to the others "this is Dr. Ichiro Serizawa")...

All the movies build suspense and show us glimpses of the monster throughout the film. Then, before we get too bored, they reveal the creatures. With these movies, the main monsters drive the films plot and story. Godzilla, however, doesn't really do that. The whole plot is driven by the film's antagonists: the MUTO's (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms). The MUTO's cause most of the film's destruction and terror. And, in my opinion, the MUTO's are too generic and forgettable. I don't have a short attention span, Godzilla just isn't in the movie. The MUTO's look too much like the Cloverfield monsters. If Godzilla is supposed to be an allegory for nuclear destruction, or the destructive force of nature, well it doesn't really work out in my opinion. If the focus of the originals was to show how Godzilla affected peoples lives, they didn't really show that in this reboot. Most of the movie was about a generic mission to stop Godzilla and the MUTO's.

That wouldn't be too bad if we had Godzilla for more than 15 minutes (give or take) in the movie. I really would've liked to see more of "The King Of Monsters". The film torments us with glimpses of Godzilla and shows him fighting the MUTO's. Then the movie changes to another scene. It avoids what could've been spectacular battles. Really? WTF?

To add to the other dilemmas, the cast is a bit too generic. The soldier, the wife, and the conspiracy nutjob. Bryan Cranston (who evidently has given up being a drug kinpin after faking his death) is the most interesting character, and he extremely underused. (--SPOILER ALERT: He was killed off way too quickly.--) Aaron Taylor Johnson (who I guess has given up his costumed identity as Kick-Ass) and Elizabeth Olsen are fine, but like the MUTO's, are forgettable. (Did anyone get my Kick-Ass and Breaking Bad reference? Also, how weird must it be for the two to be a married couple in this film, and then a pair of superhero siblings in The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron? Might I add they are sometimes an incestuous couple in the comics?) Ken Watanabe is only there to tell us important plot details. The Army is not entertaining enough and just a distraction, especially in a film that should star the King Of Monsters. Most of the movie is filled with boring sublots. The move makers didn't want to oversensitze us to too much CGI, so I feel they crammed in human drama.

The film starts out interesting, but after SPOILER ALERT Joe Brody dies, the film goes downhill from there. There is a lot of exposition and, as we are taught in school, "rising action".

Visually, it looks great. But in these days of CGI spectacle, that is the norm for Hollywood blockbusters. The final 15 minutes are good, and the scene where SPOILER ALERT Godzilla shoots atomic breath down the MUTO's throat is awesome. But even that, yes even that, isn't enough to save the Americanized "Super-Sized" Godzilla and his movie. Just kidding, Godzilla's design is great. (Maybe a bit too bulky? But the scales on his back are great, especially in the swimming scenes.

Ultimately, IMO the movie falls short in all aspects. However, I'm glad others seemed happy with the film. 10 years after the last official Godzilla movie, the King Of Monsters is back! And that roar is so iconic. Godzilla is very badass, lol. Can't wait for the sequel! I welcome Godzilla's return into movies, even if it was a bit underwhelming.

However if you are patient and are a fan of the original Gojira's tone and feel than I suggest you give this movie a shot.

At its core this is a movie that is less about Godzilla and more about how humans are dealing with the threat of giant monsters. For the most part this movie is very serious and while the human drama is fairly cliche, the film does a good job of putting these people into extremely tense situations which I feel keeps the movie entertaining.

Godzilla might not be in the movie all that much but he does have a big presence over a lot of the film and when he does do stuff man is it awesome. Some may not be pleased with the new monsters from a design standpoint. With that said however I felt that the movie did a good job of making these new monsters seem both threatening and destructive.

A lot of complained about how this movie teases the action too much and that there is not enough Godzilla action but I feel that the direction that the movie took helped make this movie seem fresh while also staying faithful to the original Japanese movie. while I do think this movie is good I felt that the poor human drama and lack of fighting might have held it back from being one of the best Godzilla movies. That said though it is nice to finally see a good American made Godzilla movie and while the teasing of monster fights and lack of Godzilla action was somewhat annoying, I think that the direction taken helped make sure that this movie could be taken seriously and also kept the movie from feeling monotonous. If your a fan of the original Gojira movie or are patient and looking for a movie with some fun and tense destructive action scenes then I would say that you should definitely check this movie out. If you are looking for a movie with giant monsters constantly fighting however, then I would suggest skipping this and instead watching either Pacific Rim or one of the many entertaining Toho Godzilla films such as Godzilla Final Wars.

Above average high-budget CG (partly thanks to Andy Serkis), plot can be weak and predictable, but the climatic battle has plenty of redonkulously uplifting fan service. You get the feeling that director Gareth Edwards forgot that if you're doing a franchise reboot, you have a checklist to fill out, and he only remembered this late into the film. Also this film dabbles in the same mistake that the Transformers films in that there way to much focus, on the unimportant humans, but luckily to much less of a degree due to both doing it less, and recognizing that giant monsters are not the best at giving intellegible dialogue. Watanabe plays the only person who knows what the hell is going on, but we get stuck with Johnson's character who is exhibiting far less intelligence about the situation than he should be. It's not a bad movie, it's just a movie that clearly shows you that it can be better. For a sequel, either Evans needs to learn how a giant monster movie should work, or Legendary should hand it over to either Guillermo Del Toro, Neill Blomkamp, or the Wachowskis. Expand

Incredibly well thought out and crafted, summer escapism picture works on nearly every level. Instead of a typical temper tantrum plot, the protagonist hero isn't feeling sorry for himself, and things are quite meta(love, God, family) under the surface. The suspense and technical achievement combined make for an exciting picture that is highly involving, and especially delivers a great adversary, with nods to early Spielberg(Jaws and Close Encounters), some bashing of later Spielberg(totally overrated JP). The action sequences are complex, easy to follow and beautifully captured. Godzilla delivers on a huge build up, and the monster fights are great. Thank you Thomas Tull for hiring Gareth Edwards. The effects are adequate and the action is average, but nothing about it is special. Aaron Johnson, who's haplessly thrust into the hero role, continues to impress with his chameleon-like ability. The first part of the film starts of promising. It builds suspense, develops the characters and creates an interesting world which would allow the plot to unfold in interesting ways.

Unfortunately as soon as the US Military shows up after the first monster attack, the whole set up is thrown over boards. After that the movie feels like its just a set up for iconic photography.. Which works great for trailers, but for me just ruins the film.

In a film which in the beginning tries to be taken serious, I really get annoyed when huge monsters appear out of nowhere. Literally, you have no clue the monster is around until a huge foot drops from the top of the screen. Like they move completely silent unless they are filmed by the camera.

Also, huge holes in the side of mountains are only discovered from the air after the ground team discovered them from the ground, even though the ground team was flown there by helicopters.

Also the human/military response to the monsters in the movie is almost always borderline suicidal and idiotic.

These cliches work if you set up the film in that direction, but in this movie it does not work for me.

The plot started out somewhat interesting, but then it lost everything it had going for it. The characters were mostly boring and one dimensional and I had no emotional attachment to them at all.

I appreciated the fact that Godzilla wasn't shown for quite awhile into the movie and that the movie did have a bit of a slower pace compared to most blockbusters. But whenever they had Godzilla on screen, the movie felt so silly and absurd and not in a good way. This is Godzilla! He's suppose to be epic and cool. And when he bashing the other monsters I should be cheering him on in awe. But instead I get some very hokey moments between the monsters. The whole battle at the end had no weight to it and bored the hell out of me.

What this movie needed were some more human elements, more story, and maybe not to take itself quite so serious because doing so made certain parts just silly instead of fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life, along with Skyline (as an example).
I am aware that the monster, supposedly fits the original, but I think that's exactly why the movie it's so bad. Godzilla looks like a giant lizard, too " humanized ", and it seems a fat and angry man. The other monsters that are among flying cockroaches, mixed with spiders, are very "alien". I felt like watching a movie filmed frame by frame, "I could almost see the hands of puppeter" (if you know what I mean) and not because the effects are bad, but how the movie is directed.
The story have no sense, the entire first half, is about the drama of the father crying for his mourning nearly 15 years ( I am surprised that Bryan Cranston has played that role after Breaking Bad ). The son, as a good American soldier is better than anyone else and the one who always survives thousand events. When the monsters are going to fight, cut the scene. Out of nowhere, everything is solved and the family is reunited and they live happily ever after... the end.
I did not like at all, I would not see it again by mistake .

Lets get to the review, Godzilla (2014) is a great movie, got the tension and suspense regarding how chaotic they can be and we, human, are such tiny and have useless weapon that we can throw against them.

I would like to appreciate Bryan Cranston who gave the film a great 10 minute opening scene, he got it right, got the appropriate sense of urgency, and have the right to know!!

More than most remakes, it remains very true to the original concept. Since the original concept involves rock 'em, sock 'em fights between giant monsters as puny humans watch their cities crumble in the crossfire, there's a limit to how auspicious this new film can get. It's pretty close to that limit.

The concept is revised for modern times, cleverly and disturbingly working in some of our modern experiences with nuclear energy. Some of the film's strongest work is a visit to the ruins surrounding a destroyed power plant in Japan, a chilling reminder of recent history. It's good enough to keep your attention while you wait for the monsters to appear. The movie builds suspense for a while, but don't worry. The mayhem is coming.

The effects are very strong, and seeing this movie in a good theater with IMAX and/or 3D is advisable. This being an American production Godzilla seems to be illustrating our obesity problem, but he works. The score is a bracing homage to early film music, with a bit of Japanese flavor sprinkled in. There isn't a great deal of ceremony or sentimentality. The tone is very appropriate and conveys a sense of cosmicism. That is, the lesson of Godzilla is that the universe is bigger than us.

There are some fetching lines of dialogue, but the human characters aren't particularly developed. The Bryan Cranston character is probably the most compelling one in the movie simply because he is trying to do something productive, while the others occasionally act but spend most of the film sitting and watching the larger goings on. Which, to my way of thinking, is fine. You're not going to see a movie called "Godzilla" for the people in it. Ultimately, the film's suspense and action, summoned skillfully by a surprisingly newfound director, make it worth seeing.

Cons: Too much build up at times, the first 2 acts aren't quite as good as act 3, a couple of silly moments.

I feel like how they marketed it in north america was fairly different than what the actual movie was and I think that hurt it a little bit. I feel like if it had a little more of the Pacific Rim action throughout I would've enjoyed it. Overall Godzilla is a decent watch.

Dear Godzilla,

I really wanted to like you, like, like you like you, but I'm not so sure anymore. We had a good time though! I might have almost fallen asleep in the middle, but I was pretty tired from studying for finals. Still, the last third of was SO awesome and fun that it almost made up for it. Almost. See, the problem is, I can't shake the feeling that you weren't... yourself the whole time. You were pleasant, and enthusiastic, and easy to follow, but the whole time I thought you were just hiding the whole story. You made sure to tell me you were sensitive, and caring, and had your heart in the right place, and that you have some of these crazy experiences in your life! But they're not that crazy so you might not want to hear about all of them but to trust you, because they're crazy. I don't care about how crazy these stories are, I care about the stories themselves, and how they affected you. But you insisted on moving on, and that was ok, and it was just ok. But when the whole thing was over, I felt like I'd seen all there was to see, but clearly that's not the case. Is it? If we ever do this again, which we should, I know you really want to, just be yourself. Don't hide what you think I might think is weird, stop telling me about things to impress me and just tell me things, and stop pretending to know what I care about so I can get a chance to know and care about you. Again, I did have fun, and I like you, but I don't see this really working out right away. Take a little while, figure out what you want, and maybe we can give this another chance.

Then you walk around the mall going to all the stores parents go to. You even PASS BY THE TOY STORE two or three times! And you’re craning your neck to just get a peek at what’s in there while your dad is pulling you down the hall away from that place of child heaven, with all the colors and things to touch that don’t break so easy. Then after visiting every store that is not the toy store, and your legs are swollen and tired, and your parents are ready to go, a not so gentle reminder stomp of the foot and accusing scream sends the weary group to that wonderful place. You get there and suddenly your legs are no longer tired, you could run and jump for a life time in this place. You fly to the action figures and pick up a Ninja Turtle and no sooner have you determined that you are holding Michelangelo, do you hear your parents say that it is time to go because the store is closing. WHAT KIND OF BULL CRAP IS THAT!!!??? Yes, “technically” you went to the toy store. Even went inside and touched a real toy. But it feels like the promise was broken. That’s what this new Godzilla is like.

Back in “Th’ Day” there was a commercial with a little old biddy driving around to different fast food restaurants (McDonalds, Burger King, etc) and she’d pull up to the drive-through and say “WHERE’S TH’ MEAT!?” It was an advertisement for Wendy’s because their meat was square and you could SEE it. It was also implying Wendy’s meat was thicker. So with that bit of background memory, I say,

“Where’s the Star!?”
The movie is named Godzilla. It’s a reference to the most famous monster of all ‘Kaiju’ Monster films. One would think with all the hype and attention and – oh, because the movie is named “Godzilla” – that the star of the movie would be…well, Godzilla. Godzilla gets what feels like about 7 minutes for the whole movie. What IS seen of he-who-should-have-been-the-star (at the end of the movie), is really good stuff – but all that really good stuff is what was promised in the trailers and is what was lacking throughout the rest of the whole entire movie.

“Where’s the Action!?”
It seemed like every time some action was about to happen, the writers would jerk their fishing rods and yank the audience as far away from the action as possible. It was as though they DIDN’T WANT the audience to experience being right in the middle of the awesome colossal fights. Power Rangers daily showed more action with the over grown monster battles.
Maybe I wasn’t supposed to go in thinking this was an action film. This was a suspense movie. I don’t mean anything like Signs, Odd Thomas, or…..well, I don’t watch suspense, because generally they’re in the Horror section and I HATE Horror/Suspense – for different reasons (though Odd Thomas is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen). What I’m saying here is – it was an action film built on a very firm suspense foundation. If you can’t stand the pains of delayed gratification and being let down in the end anyway – do not see this film.

“Where’s the Script!?”
Speaking of script, it was as though the writer(s) couldn’t figure out between BBQ chicken wings or Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. What do those two have in common (besides being food)? Nothing. You’ve been waiting on it, so here it is – Pacific Rim. There I said it. A lot of people didn’t like Pacific Rim. A lot of people didn’t like the plot holes and floopy script. In my opinion, I think that’s what made it a better movie. The writers/directors decided they were going to make a Monster Mash action flick, and the story could work its way around the action. It was a fun, fast, brawling movie with things that made you think “why didn’t they do that to begin with!?”, and not really care because it had already been fun watching so far. I felt like Godzilla was started with that same mindset intended (work the story through the action) and then someone kept getting lost in story development and had to constantly be reminded to throw in action – which they would then rebel against to focus on their bad actors. If they were going to go with the full story script, then that’s what they should have done, but if they wanted an action movie, the script would have to take a side and just let the explosions and graphics do the rest. I’m not saying the script isn’t important, it’s just intensely difficult to do them both together and still make sense. The 1998 Godzilla had better developed characters (and acting) (and action) (and it had Godzilla).

And now, with a colossal hype train behind it, the king of the monsters is finally back. Was it worth the wait?

Alright, maybe it's not REALLY worth a decade, but the new Godzilla is a damn god film nonetheless. The only major flaw is its slow start. And when I say slow, I mean very, very slow. Sure, a nuclear power plant collapses and the presence of the to-be-revealed creatures is hinted at, but just be prepared for some long stretches of dialogue before anything really picks up.

But once it does, it becomes abundantly clear that Godzilla is arguably the best monster movie of the new millennium. The visual effects are spectacular, and the sound design is sufficient to shake the seats in the theater. It's an experience like nothing else.

The over-the-top soundtrack while people were simply walking around took me right out of the film. It's alright... I can see why fans of the original Godzilla would love this movie. I'm just not a Godzilla fan to begin with. I just wish humans had a bigger role in this film to save themselves. At least it wasn't terrible... also, I didn't realize that Godzilla likes to constantly take naps. He wakes up from the sea, fights, sleeps, fights some more, takes another nap, wins the last battle, and then goes back into the ocean to sleep until another giant monster appears. Expand

The film from a visual standpoint is pretty incredible. Godzilla and the MUTOs look really great as they throw each other threw buildings and the climatic ending battle was surely a spectacle to see. But I think from a human standpoint, the film is a little choppy. I never felt totally committed to the relationship between Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen's characters. But this movie is about Godzilla after all and his effect on society which the film does very well. Overall, in terms of an American remake on a Japanese classic, it's a solid film that is definitley worth the overpriced movie ticket. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The worst piece of **** I have ever seen. The story is aimed at U10 children, and makes absolutely no sense. Monsters that grow out of radioactivity, would be more credible if these monsters ate rock. Godzilla fights them (who knows why??) because he does not eat them. He is an extreme oddity! Soldiers that activate a nuclear bomb (they carry the ICBM missiles instead of just the bomb, but at this point nothing makes sense and you have already started laughing) within a major US city and then realize they need to deactivate it. My god!!!! Everything is crappy, the FX are **** compared to Pacific Rim, the music is definitevely non-existent (in PR it was **** great!). The actors, OH MY GOD, they are a joke, the old guy (the seinfeld dentist, yeah that is his profile) makes you laugh, he overreacts to anything. The young guy is expression-less, well he is not even an actor, he seems to be a robot. An extremely weak argument, absolutely bizarre and crazy, and poorly executed. Its not that I dont like Kaiju movies, as I said, Pacific rim is a masterpiece Expand

Most of the dialogue is boring and not interesting and it feels like as if the movie was rushed. The only things I like about this movie was the action scenes with Godzilla fighting those 2 monsters (which idk what the **** they are suppose to be called) but yeah. Overall this is a decent movie I will give it 7.2/10 I just wish they cans show us more of Godzilla fighting rather than cutting it out so much. Expand

The King Of The Monsters Returns! Bow down to the king!
The Human drama is dark and brutal. The Godzilla movies always shown the destructive nature that the humans cannot escape from the battlefield. From the start to the ending I was eyes open into the storyline. Which was the generic awesome original Godzilla genre. "We need to **** kill these things" then meeting with failure over failure. Godzilla is a destructive force..Godzilla is natures balance.. and the idea just knowing that pays off, because in this film they are fully there in the astmosphere, but they barely show them until the end product. For an example, they show off that they are about to have an epic battle, then teases it into someone else ACROSS THE WORLD. For some people it was a big problem, for me. It was just right. It kept me watching, looking for whats next, it gave me chills down my spine. Btw Godzilla is a badass MOFO.

Though it needed more of Byran Canston. He made the starting of the film, feel so nice. He was the center of darkness and emotional depression that nature caused him to be. It makes you feel mentally that bad things are going to happen to the humans in the future of the movie. In the end it sorta pays off with good acting but generic characters.. which my family didn't mind. End result it was smooth and dramatic. Visually it couldn't be better, we hit the point of realism that our eyes can handle.

It was more that we could of asked for.

I thought they did a decent job building the suspense. I will admit it felt a little drug out once the first encounter between Godzilla and an MUTO occurred, Even 30 seconds of action there could have made the appetizer Edwards was trying to give us more filling.

They did an 'okay' job setting up the story, It was better than almost every Godzilla ever conceived but it felt like several different movies going on at once. Godzilla looked great, the action sequences involving Godzilla were great but in the end I don't really feel like I got enough, and came away a little disappointed as a result. Trading some Aaron Taylor-Johnson face time for Godzilla would have gone a long way.

As a fan of the series, I would have preferred Godzilla as an antagonist. It felt like making Godzilla this misunderstood savior of humanity, destroying buildings as collateral damage was hedging their bets a little much.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is difficult to put the awfulness of the movie in words. I think the main problem is that the producers tried too hard to make this movie more than it is.
What the movie is: an excuse to show CGI monsters fighting. From this perspective, it works. The CGI is nice, even beautiful to look at. Plenty of eye candy in the monster fights. The only complain I have in this perspective is the unimaginative monster design. Godzilla is fine (moves like a chubby teddy bear) but the others are not very interesting.

What the movie isn't: dramatic. There's no drama there simply because the human characters are totally inconsequential. There's no reason to care for them, their actions have no impact on the events unfolding and while that may help the point that humans are just pawns in a bigger game, it also made me feel that the time spent with human characters was a waste.

There's no tension building, the story just drags on to the moment everyone is waiting: the unveiling of the monsters. And one they're on screen, they quickly go off screen to make some room for the inconsequential human characters.

Speaking of inconsequential, the movie spends time introducing us to to the main character's father and mother, the latter dying while the former becomes obsessed with unraveling a supposed cover-up. Why? The entire setup has no consequence over the story. His father blabbers about 'echolocation' which leads to the army discovering a second creature en route to ... Vegas? They discover it about 5 minutes before entering the city. That would have happened with or without his father. The main character's participation is also no triggered by the introduction: he's an army man, he could have simply stayed home and join the battle there.

We could spend weeks discussing the movie's shortcomings. The producers don't bother much with physics and making a difference between radiation and nuclear fuel, although the movie's setup is based on that. A nuke explodes 2 kilometers (yes, in the end the bomb with 5 minutes to go is left moving on a small boat at about 13-14knots, meaning it was about 2km away from the harbor when it goes off and there seems to be no effect, no blast, hitting the city, nuclear fallout, etc.

The movie has about 15 minutes of worthwhile scenes and over an hour of pure annoyance. Can't recommend it.

Will it be a hit this time unlike last time? Well unlike Ronald Emmerich helmed 1998 remake, which I haven't seen so far, this is the best monster movie made in Hollywood since Jurassic Park. In some parts it is even better and more creative than Jurassic Park. Only thing lacking is the humour and memorable character like Dr. Ian Malcolm or Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park. But enough with the comparison, let 's talk about the film on its own. This movie is non-stop entertaining that's for sure. It is entertaining even when the scene does not involve monster fights and human drama. And main credit for this goes to Bryan Cranston(whom we said goodbye on TV last year as "Walter White" on incredible finale of equally incredible "Breaking Bad") and Ken Watanabe who steal every scene they are in as scientist due to their incredible acting despite the fact they are in supporting role. As for the leading characters played by Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elisabeth Olsen as husband and wife, they are okay in their performance, but are not convincing enough to be a parent of 5 year old, since they themselves look like a teenager. However when they are not together, they do their job decent enough to hold their scenes tight.
Enough about performance, let's talk about the action scenes. The fight scenes are pretty awesome. They would be one of best fight scenes you would see this year. Some of the monster-vs-monster fight can give competition to last year's Pacific Rim. Unlike some monsters in a PG-13 film, here monsters are really scary not only because of their looks (kudos to creature design department) but because the not so experienced director add enough build up, momentum ,unpredictability and thrill without any clichéd jump scares, to make the atmosphere scary.
The film is brilliant technically. And by technically I do not mean just the special effects but the cinematography and sound effect. But most impressive thing is art direction. Here everything is not grey or dark, which is the case in movie like these, but here each and everything looks beautiful, be it architecture of Japan or close up shots of insects(yes, insects!) which looks like they are from National Geographic Channel.

I walked into this movie and I wasn't sure what to expect. Walking out I can tell you.
Imagine you shot the 1954 Godzilla film in color (like 1998 film without the creative changes), gave it a contemporary plot and mashed as much of the film Cloverfield in there as you can manage. That would suitably describe this film.
There are pros and cons of course.
Cons:
The Scientist archetypes don't really contribute much.
The epic monster fighting is mostly done off screen or is presented in wake of destruction shots for the first part of the film.
Nothing really astounding in the acting department.
Pros:
Godzilla looks like godzilla. He even emotes a bit at one point. He looks weary.
The right number of monsters to keep it interesting.
Believable destruction,
An interesting original take on the whole ancient monsters thing.
You don't lose the human scale of things.

Overall this film magnificently combines the three elements that make up a Godzilla film; nuclear weapon fears, massive destruction the military either causes or can do nothing about and also a giant green lizard that is extremely hard to kill. Overall this film falls just short of excellent. Ironically it is the human element that is its biggest weakness.

The redesign and reintroduction of the king of monsters is fantastic and he is truly mesmerizing when on screen. Just don't expect to him being on screen too much. There's a lot of focus elsewhere for big chunks of the movie such as when we're with the human characters or the other monsters in the film. It's not that these portions of the film aren't good but after a while you do expect to see a bit more Godzilla in a film called 'Godzilla'. It's like when you go to see a band and the support act is good but have an obnoxiously long set so you're standing there thinking "Okay you guys aren't bad but you're not the reason I came here. Wrap it up." But when the headliner finally appears it is just un-freaking-believable.
The acting is decent though not outstanding. Bryan Cranston puts in the best performance but that was kind of a given. Birds fly really well, fish swim really well and Bryan Cranston acts really well. Aaron Taylor Johnson has the most screen time and there's nothing really wrong with his performance it's just not his most impressive one. Although that's mainly because the writing of them film rarely calls for him to show anything other than worry, angst or fear.
Could it be better? Yeah but it's still a huge leap in the right direction, a triumphant return for everyones favourite kaiju. For people new to the franchise it would be a great introduction. For those long time fans it is tremendously satisfying to see Godzilla have his dignity restored more than a decade since the last horrific attempt that we can all finally forget about.

The focus of the film highly lies with the other two antagonist monsters and with the awfully cliched military-man protagonist. Godzilla has absolutely no depth whatsoever to his character and exists purely to serve the role of absolute and total savior. He submerges for the first time in 60 years just to kick the bad guys butts and then immediately leaves as soon as the job was over as if he was just waiting to be a good guy. Some criticize this film for lacking action but I actually found that to be a great relief in the days where every blockbuster movie must spend 45 minutes of the film blowing things up for no reason. To discuss the positive aspects of the film, the CGI monsters really do look fantastic and some scenes of the fight sequences were genuinely very cool but what drags this movie down is how Godzilla is almost a supporting character whose only role is to save the day when needed. This film should have just concentrated on one kaiju, that being Godzilla. Other monsters should have waited for inevitable cash-in sequels. Expand

It treats its subject matter as seriously as a good disaster movie should, and provides us with ample buildup as the human characters work to piece together the mystery of Godzilla and his foes.
There is certainly an ample supply of stock side characters and disaster-movie tropes, and Bryan Cranston's role in the film is basically just to deliver lines for the trailer, but this is a Godzilla movie. Judged by that standard it stands tall as one of the best.

The best of the worst. - A-grade B-grade. Finally a half decent monster remake. Plot had substance but felt like the performances were at best contrived and too family-friendly for my liking.

Anyways, first off, I love Bryan Cranston's acting. He was perfect at his role. It was unfortunate that he had to die early in the movie. On the other hand, Aaron Johnson was alright. To be honest, I do not like the part of him saving his family and all. Still, Ken Wanatabe was quite good at his acting. A quiet character who believe in Godzilla saving the world. The weird part was when he brought up the bombing of Hiroshima. I might not understand what significant of that reminder, but yeah.

I thought Godzilla was to be the only monster in the movie, but it got better. In this movie, Godzilla is not the destroyer, but the savior. It was very nice of him to save the world from MUTO. My favorite part was when Godzilla decided to use his laser beam towards his enemies. It was AMAZING. I love it. There were some anti climax in the movie. When Godzilla was about to fight for the first time, it was shown in a TV which also skipped some part of the battle. Still, it was nice and I was happy that Godzilla did not die at the end.

I recommend this movie. It was nice to watch, especially at the end. Go Gojira!

Speaking of Godzilla, he served virtually no purpose in his own movie. He was just there to clean things up so that the stars of this film, the MUTOs didn't go to the credits unchecked.

It was a terrible... terrible movie.

And they retconned Godzilla's atomic breath to be actual fire... and that upsets me.

I understand the desire to tease us, but at some point it gets to be too much. The reveal was worth the wait because Godzilla seriously kicked butt, but the fight could have been shown much more.

It was an awesome but frustrating movie. Whenever it comes out on home video, I will surely watch it again but I may fast forward to the good parts, if that tells you anything about the movie.

With that being said, I'm in no way disappointed with that outcome. Godzilla is a taut, smart, and morally sound THRILLER, not action film. Director Gareth Edwards does a great job of keeping Godzilla back for the most part, only showing glimpses of him until the final 20 or so minutes. This style of narrative pays great homage to the original film, and I really respect that. People complain about Aaron Johnson's character not being emotive enough, and while he certainly isn't, that's not what the character calls for. The character calls for someone who is in control-both physically and emotionally, and that's what Johnson brings to the table. The entire cast brings their A-game and elevates occasionally clunky dialogue to fascinating, realistic drama. A great movie. Expand

The storyline is fairly interesting as well besides not being much of one.

This film is definitely worth watching.

But do not expect an insane amount of fight scenes as the film is more focused on the humans rather than the kaijus. The only thing I was disappointed with was the music for this film. There should had been more adreniline rushing music with guitars etc. Rather than a orchestra.

I had very few complaints when watching the movie. None of the ones I usually had were in the film at all, like the military being completely incompetent or people getting killed by the monster by doing dumb things. It felt very realistic and everything had weight to it. Seeing it in IMAX only helped with this, the depth was fantastic.

Godzilla was faithful to the original monster, and felt respected as Godzilla instead of just a big dumb monster. The designs of the MUTO's did seem a little out of place, but they did look great as well. A few scenes were very striking when they stood in full form, same with Godzilla.

This was the first movie in a very long time to give me chills. I can't stress enough how massive everything felt. I recommend IMAX if possible.

Even if you aren't a fan of the original Godzilla, you can still find things to love in this.

Extremely flimsy and overlong character drama with a bunch of good actors squandered in nothing roles and a lead role played by a guy with zero charisma. Flimsy characters and hackneyed plot would be expected in a traditional monster movie, but the script doesn't focus on the monsters, instead turning it into a generic disaster movie--forcing us to spend 100 minutes following a guy who can't even play a convincing action figure. Its like Jaws without any of the great characters or suspense. Script gives talented Liz Olsen nothing unique to do. Anyone who liked this movie: you can't tell me the main character's little kid son wasn't the least interesting kid in a movie ever. It's like he wandered in off the street and was cast on the spot. Pacific Rim was a little corny but it had a lot of personality and a strong director's vision. This director's vision seems to be that the most mundane things from a monster movie need to be given a huge spotlight while ignoring the centerpiece of the film--the monster. It's like if Office Space was 5% funny workers and 95% bubbling water cooler. Expand

Think the movie would have been more interesting from the POV of Ken Watanabe.
Godzilla Was magnificently done but he looked like he was a support character on his own movie...

Going to try and keep this short and spoiler free for you all. I had a couple of problems with it, but they were just minor niggles. Overall it was an enjoyable film, well worth seeing in my opinion.

We don't look for great dialogue as a rule in this type of movie, but thanks to the too short role of Brian Cranston, truly one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood, who can make anything believable, the movie takes on a more human role and its hokey factor is much lower.
The big draw here is cinematography and special effects, as one would expect, and on that note the movie excels. The colors especially in background shots are well placed as we see Honolulu, Las Vegas and San Francisco bear the fury of our hero Godzilla fighting two creatures called "mutas", or mothras, perhaps, that in the case of the male look like huge cockroach/bat monsters. In fact, they are actually quite disturbing in detail, and as a caution, your littlest kids may not want to see them that close up in a theatre.
That being said, "Godzilla" will be a big draw as word spreads that it's actually as good a monster movie as you're going to get, the closest comparison maybe being the scarier "Cloverfield". It isn't deep, but it's good for watching to get your mind off anything that's bugging you.
