This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is exactly as I thought it would be. A more realistic look of the most famous movie monster therefore distancing itself from Godzilla's much earlier films. If your expecting Bryan Cranston as some sort of lead role then turn back now because he's not in it for that long. Its a shame really because the trailer portrayed him very well. I can't help thinking he was only in this as a selling point because he was in Breaking Bad. Instead they make us sympathise with a dull and unrelatable marine soldier. This brings the film down further because he's terrible in this. Honestly the most blatant and obvious example of a bad main character. The most interesting character (next to Bryan Cranston) is Godzilla himself. At the end of the film, he's treated as some sort of hero for defeating the enemy MUTO's. But here's the thing in every film he's portrayed in Godzilla only serves himself and nothing else. I only thought that Godzilla defeated the MUTO's because he wanted to reclaim his territory which is cool but the film ultimately wants to express Godzilla as a saviour of the people instead of an uncaring and unfeeling atrocitie of humankind. Overall Godzilla is a good watch if not a little dull in parts. But if the perfectly executed fight scenes sell it to you then this film could be forgiven for a lot. Expand

4 things that work in this movie are Bran Cranston, Godzilla's Roar, Ken Watanabes voice and the last 20 to 30 minutes of the movie, the rest is just filled with characters we don't care about and a lifeless protagonist.

Whilst Godzilla is mostly lacking of its title monster, it does offer more depth, better acting, and a smarter script than your typical smash-everything-in-sight monster movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, this is a major justice to all Godzilla fans after that unmentional disaster just over a decade ago. I always love going into a movie not knowing what is going to happen next or in the case of this movie, not knowing about anything besides Bryan Cranston's amazingness and Godzilla being in the movie with maybe another monster, or two. Three is better than 2. Godzilla's opponents, the M.U.T.O's are awesome in their own ways. They're a great challenge for old Goji, who is looking rather tubby in 2014, but probably twice as big as the last time we saw him, back in Final Wars in 2003/2004. He actually looks like Godzilla instead of the iguana thing from the 1998 movie. The rest of the characters didn't really bother me as much as they bothered others, I never really saw a problem, the humans in Godzilla movies are never really fleshed out like they would be in other movies. I'm just used to it by now. But people need to expand their minds because there's military men just like Ford in the movie, they're trained for extreme situations. Anyways, the movie looks amazing, some of the best CGI around was used in this movie, the fights look very realistic and not as flashy as they were in Pacific Rim. The movie also has an amazing soundtrack for the monster fights and tense scenes. Its also a very loud movie, but loud in a good way, it literally sounds like Godzilla is in the theater with you and is roaring, and the first roar he lets out at the airport scene shakes the theater and goes right through you. It really tests the strength of the eardrums. Phenomenal experience, and the best movie of 2014 so far. Expand

They did a great work catalogueing every one of them and putting them together in a somewhat reasonable order. I cannot believe someone who's more than 7 years old could like this movie, tedious repetition. I watched it with my brother and cousins who are early teenagers and they were as disgusted as I was. In fact, we were so mad by wasting our money on such crap that we watched X-Men Days of Future Past without paying for it, seriously, it's the least the cinema should do for us.
Spot the critics who gave this movie a good review and don't ever read their reviews again!!!

By the way, sadly, this might kill Bryan Cranston's. **** believable that they kill one of the best actors of all time just so we have to keep torturing ourselves with the stupid looks of the disappointing Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I say disappointing because Mr. Taylor-Johnson did an amazing job as Count Vronsky in Anna Karenina. Total shipwreck is an eufemism for this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie as a whole just really bummed me out.
For starters, they barely show Godzilla. I know people say it was to build tension, but there comes a point where you stop building tension and just start pissing off the audience.
Even ignoring that fact, the movie is annoying. It focuses more on the humans than the monsters. That would be fine if the human characters were interesting. They kill off Bryan Cranston, the best character, early off in the movie. All of the other characters are uninteresting.
I was just very disappointed with this film. There is one scene at the very end of the movie that bumps my score up 2 points, but if not for that I would have given this film a 3.
Hopefully the next Godzilla film will be good.

As a fan of Godzilla films this was pretty good, there is a few plot holes that are glaringly obvious but to be fair what do you expect from a monster film, especially a Godzilla film.
The special effects for this film are quite impressive you can tell a lot of the budget was put into it, but not much of that budget was put into character development with the main character being a good guy because he as half a brain, and the main scientist knowing nothing at the start but suddenly becomes an expert in the field because of a few floppy disks on earthquakes and 10 seconds speaking to Bryan Cranston's character, who doesn't appear in the film for spoiler reasons.
But at the end of the film (last 25 minutes) it gets really interesting and is just brilliant to watch, but it really takes forever to get there.
In conclusion only watch this if you have patience or are a Godzilla fan.

Godzilla movie review

Long ago in a dark, dark time known as 1998, a film was brilliantly advertised as being a remake of the original Godzilla movie, making it dark, realistic, and have political undertones. What did we get? A slapstick comedy featuring baby Godzilla slipping on gumballs and Matthew Broderick saying “That’s a lot of fish.” So naturally fans were left rather annoyed, and left feeling that their beloved king of the monsters wasn’t being paid enough tribute in modern cinema. And sixteen years later director Gareth Edwards saves the day with his movie “Godzilla”

Normally I would talk about the plot in this paragraph, but I really can’t. Half of the experience of going to see Godzilla is really being unaware of what’s going to happen, and so I’ll only give a very brief look at the plot. Joe Brody (Brian Cranston) works at a nuclear power plant, and on his birthday his wife (Juliette Binoche) comes with him to the plant in order to help him with some problems. While there they discover a string of odd radioactive spikes and then blah blah blah Godzilla. I really can’t explain any more than that.

This movie’s biggest advantage is its buildup. Godzilla himself only shows up in the last half-hour in the movie, and so the other hour and a half is spent mostly around Brian Cranston’s character and his son Ford Brody (Aaron Johnson) searching around nuclear sites and trying to track down whatever is causing these odd radioactive spikes, and rousing these mysterious other monsters that a certain king of the monsters may throw down with near the end *wink*. The tone that this film sets and the overall feel that it creates is astounding, and is very much up to scratch with something like Jaws or Flight of the Navigator. Its all extremely interesting to watch, seeing how governments and scientists react, how the military reacts, etcetera.

However this film’s negative (notice how it only has one) is sidelining Brian Cranston’s character for his son. Cranston is an infinitely better actor (one scene of his I’m determined to get him nominated for best actor) and his character is the one that we were most attached to. Pushing him to the side for a character that is a cold, military soldier with a “Let’s get the job done” attitude was definitely a poor decision.

But what’s a Godzilla movie without a gigantic lizard destroying the city? Not much, and when Godzilla does appear in this film he is truly fantastic. He is brilliantly CG’d, his scale is brilliantly portrayed, and when he is scrapping with the other monsters he is scrapping HARD. The final fight contains what I would like to say deserves the “Best Kill Award” from whatever silly organisation would grant such a thing.

However, a complaint that people have is that Godzilla is teased too much in this film. I completely disagree, as keeping Godzilla’s fighting for the last little bit of the movie made it far FAR more impressive. It’s like having a steaming hot lobster that looks like the most delicious thing you’ve ever seen served, but you aren’t allowed to eat it for half an hour. So this delicious meal stares at you, making you lick your lips in anticipation more and more every second. And when you finally are allowed to chow down, it tastes oh, so delicious.

So in conclusion Godzilla is easily a contender for best picture this year. It has excellent build-up, flawless acting, and a final fight scene to blow any other film’s climax out of the water. For any lover of action, monster, or any darker movie in general, Godzilla is a must see. Godzilla scores a 9/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thanks to the new Godzilla director Gareth Edwards, I must say in this new latest monster anticipation of the summer, Godzilla brings better sound, and visual effects, new casts and the first time they actually ever converted it in 3D and IMAX 3D. I am going to contrast between gojira 1954 and Godzilla 2014. I'll start with gojira 1954. In this first Kaiju film, this is in black and white, they speak Japanese and it's over a ninety-eight minutes if the film which that sucks to only me. Now next am going do about Godzilla 2014. In this new reboot franchise, this has new creatures fighting Godzilla in it, perfect sound, and visual effects, also in 3D and IMAX 3D and best action performances which I gotta say I loved it better then the 1954 one and other franchises before the new one came out. So I would liked to say thank you Gareth Edwards for bringing the franchise back this year. And one more thing to say that this is the summer's best anticipation movie I ever seen in 2014. Expand

The enemy was really scary. That's the best thing on this movie. The idea of human characters involved was too much be forced. But, it's really great job. The scientist people in the movie were stupid, it's remarkable none of them were dead. It's very sweet family movie.

Didn't care much for the actual plot, particularly because the main character is rather dull and extremely lucky having escaped imminent death several times - it's a recurring theme (particularly with the helicopter rescues). Not terrible, but nothing I'd really recommend either. Expand

Godzilla brings new life into the GodzillaThere's something most of us Godzilla fans have been patiently waiting for for a long time: a good Godzilla film made by Hollywood. With this sweeping epic, however, that wait is finally over. Godzilla brings new life into the Godzilla franchise with a violent fibrillation shock to the heart. Finally sweeping Roland Emmerich's disastrous attempt under the bed, Godzilla delivers not only a thrilling, engaging and emotionally invested film, it brings along that sense of shock and awe that most monster movies don't with cinematography and special effects that bring movies like Transformers down to their knees. Backed by an enriched and powerful story packaged with a script evidently written by truly devoted people and an unpredictable sequence of events that always gets you pondering about the next thing that might happen, Godzilla is a delight for movie-goers and blockbuster sightseers alike.

Without a doubt, Godzilla is one hell of a film. Guaranteed to get your heart pounding throughout the 2 hour run-time of the film, the team at Legendary Pictures has successfully pulled off a grand spectacle for western audiences to enjoy greatly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Right off the bat it seems like another summer movie and it is. But the brand name is so well known that it is impossible to overlook this film.

While it gives us a fresh start with the King of the Monsters (after that last movie), we never quite get enough of the feel that made the original Japanese film a classic, but then again I never saw that one and I regret it until I do. This one was just too Americanized.

The main problem was the people, they are just a drag. Bryan Cranston starts the film very strongly and the film would have benefited greatly if he were not killed off in the first 30 minutes. Aaron Tyler-Johnson is just too young to be a "good" actor, he needs practice and LOTS of it.

The monsters were typical Cloverfield monsters like always so they are disappointing. Come on, be more creative next time like the Japanese! But Godzilla himself was better than ever, even though many people have been critical of his "weight gain".

The main criticism that I for one am not very particular about is the fact there is barely any Godzilla at all. It was all about build up, guys. But in fact: Just get the cool shot, foot comes down, pan up slowly, close up shot, the King lets out a mighty ROAR!!! Cut to aftermath... Okay, I guess that's okay. But they did it again, and again, and again, and...

Okay, yes this film has problems but it was FAR better than the last American one, that Roland Emmerich disaster. I mean seriously, stop whining about this one and complain about the one with Ferris Beuller (That's a lot of fish.) I mean seriously.

Anyway, Godzilla is a faithful film, it lends the fans something to look forward to in the sequel(s) at least. But this one is just... passable. I guess I was expecting way too much from a series I barely know.

The movie wasn't a total flop, it had it’s pros and many cons. On the big screen, the film looked amazing and the attention to detail really showed in the CGI. Set pieces looked spectacular and were very believable throughout the whole film. Bryan Cranston did an excellent job and in my opinion saved the movie from being a complete fail; he interjected feeling into the show that other characters struggled with–this made for a strong start. Cranston’s character did not get as much screen time as I would have liked to see and the protagonists roll was passed down to a much harder character to follow. At that point, about forty-five minutes in, the movie became a mess. I spent the remainder of the film trying to ignore simple mistakes that stacked up. There was so much potential in this film to capture the emotions of the people on the ground, witnessing thousands of deaths. Instead of doing so the makers focused on the monster movie element which just became another summer movie blockbuster. Passing realistic time was the biggest con in my opinion, everything happened way too fast and that didn’t help the pacing at all. The last half hour of the movie was pretty shallow with a cookie cutter climax that was not only unrealistic but a compromise to the show's overall potential and integrity. Despite the many problems with what could have been a more meaningful storyline, it looked great on the big screen and kept me entertained for the first forty minutes. In the end Godzilla was loud, flashy, and made out as a hero, even though he likely stomped hundreds of people to death as he made his way through San Francisco.  Expand

The story put up is ok. The concept that is. I really hate it when the main character just happens to always be in the right or wrong place at the right or wrong moment. It is forced. The story should have been better. I just did not buy the whole "world order" thing. The real 'bad guy" should have been the backstory. I would have lived with it if they spent 10 mins to touch upon the next movie and this was just a set up for the next film. Sadly, they did not and I doubt they will come up with a new one or if they do it will be any good Expand

Godzilla has been burnt into my subconscious for as long as I can remember. Jung would probably call her (yes Godzilla is female) my inner Goddess, but enough about my personal relationship with a giant anthropomorphic lizard . If you are a Godzilla fan, you will move through several stages in the viewing of this movie.

First you will experience hope. The opening credits are creative and original and immediately open into Bryan Cranston and Juliet Binoche acting superbly. Characters are being developed, plot points are being leveraged, foreshadowing is in abundance. Then, it changes, (no spoilers here).

Second you will experience fear. The realization that all your previous hopes have been abandoned and you are actually, yes, stuck inside an American military propaganda film. I can't think of a more heinous skin within which a Godzilla film might be wrapped. At it's core Godzilla is a modern archetype representing a reaction to the military industrial complex and radioactive pollution. Remember all the model tanks being smashed in the original Godzilla movies? Remember how Godzilla was reawakened by nuclear tests in the pacific? Not anymore. Now it's all, "Yay Marines! How can I be of service to the United States Army!"

Third you will experience disappointment. Regardless of the political sandbagging, you will still want to see a big monster fight. You will, and it will not be very good. It will also take a long, long, long, time to get there, with 2 or 3 fake-outs. Also, if you enjoyed Godzilla having a personality, you can forget it. Personally I feel as though the "evil" monsters (MUTO's as dubbed by the military in one of the most painful pieces of exposition ever to grace a film since "unobtainium" in Avatar) had the most personality in the entire film, yes even compared to Cranston and Binoche.

On a positive note, the FX are absolutely amazing. The physics of the giant creatures are perfect and the movie never shies away from a long shot which is a real breath of fresh air in the current climate of cinematic, close-up, shaky camera antics. It really has amazing production values and the team behind the visuals/editing/cinematography should be very proud.

Some might say I'm taking this film to seriously, but considering the dark tone set by the film, I think I'm on point with it's shortcomings. And honestly, Compared to most of the sci-fi / adventure films on the landscape (Transformers), this movie is practically "City of Lost Children".

So take your 10-12 year old children to see it, the enjoyment they will have will more than make up for all the films flaws, maybe. Just make sure you wake them up when the exciting stuff is happening.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It really bothers me to write this review. I've been pumped since this movie was announced because I was a Godzilla fan since I was a little kid. This movie just did not do it for me. The movie bothered me because they advertised HEAVILY on Bryan Cranston. Then Bryan dies in like the first 30 minutes of the movie and instead you get a very stale and boring Aaron Taylor Johnson. The human story was one of the most boring human stories in a Godzilla movie. Listen, I'm aware that the original one had a lot of teasing and "tension building" but in the first movie there was a mystery. You know what I mean it was like "Whats Godzilla?" "When is he going to attack?" In this one is was like oh Godzilla is about to fight a Muto *cuts to something else* Me and my brothers started to FREAK OUT. We all know the fight is going on but they don't feel like showing it instead watch Aaron Taylor Johnson and his squad running. Another bad thing is that Godzilla is not really the focus. Not even monster wise the Mutos were more of the focus monster wise. But a thing that completely overshadowed the monster story was the horrible.. stale... boring human story. It featured Bryan Cranston (which was great while it lasted) Aaron Taylor Johnson (come on he could've tried harder) and Ken Watanabe (completely underused). Aaron Taylor Johnson had a terrible performance and showed no emotion even after his father died. Godzilla was one of the most badass looking Godzillas however and I did enjoy the new Muto monsters. The CGI was one of the best CGI's I've ever seen. However this was not the movie that was advertised. Expand

I am pretty tired of the requirement for Hollywood movies to inject a forced love story, forced boobs, forces explosions and forced American patriotism. Please just stop and make a movie about Godzilla. We don't need to see Olsen and some muscly man making out to enjoy the movie. I'm beginning to think the army pays hollywood to glorify itself. Everyone else I spoke with about the movie is in agreement so I know I'm not the only one annoyed by this.

Everything else was GREAT.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is nothing special, something that will be forgotten by the end of the Summer. It falls into the cookie-cutter action movie mold. The majority of screen time is spent following the military to ridiculous extremes. In one scene Godzilla is actually traveling with aircraft carriers and other battleships as he "hunts"... military propaganda all around. You get the cliche tension between military/scientist as the military ignore multiple warnings regarding their impending f-up. The protagonist(a random civilian) constantly hitches rides with random units of the military, breaking every protocol imaginable. This happens over and over again until suspension of disbelief is near impossible. At one point in the movie the military decide to set off a nuke 20 miles off the coast to lure and kill the monsters, but for some reason they decide to arm the bomb in the San Francisco Bay... I just don't even...

The monster battles are pretty cool, but not worth sitting through two hours of garbage to see.

One of the few movies iv seen in a while that makes your jaw drop and cheer at the screen. Holding back Godzilla was an incredibly smart choice and gave life to the monster on screen. (Good for this movie, if there is a sequel i want to see him for a much longer time.) That being said, Godzilla had more character and personality then any other human character in the movie. Luckily the human drama is just interesting enough to string you along till you get the major pay off at the end of the movie. Its great that we have a Godzilla movie where we can actually root for Godzilla. Expand

This is how Godzilla 2014's elevator pitch gone:

Guy A: "Hey we should make a cash in to Godzilla again!"

Guy B "But what about last time in 1998? People hated that"

Guy A: Well this is different, You know how every one hated how he looked? Let's cut out the middle man and make a Godzilla movie...With no Godzilla!"

Guy B: "Give this man 160K and a promotion!"

This is not Godzilla, This is about as Godzilla as Attack Of the Killer Tomatoes is a totally believable horror movie, it is not. And before you go "Oh but the original gojira from 1954 had very little godzilla in it and he is not supposed to be the main character an they are tension building" Yeah well there is tension building and then there is just being slow,

I actually rewatched the 1954 movie and timed both movies with a stopwatch, Godzilla 2014 had 10 minutes and 30 seconds of godzilla screen time, Now compare that to the original movie, 25 minutes, now that may not sound like too much but if you throw in the fact that they were 60 years apart and the original had 1.5 million behind it and was basically filmed in their backyard, where as the new one had 160 million dollars behind it, CGI, and Bryan **** Cranston in it, and using complex mathematics we can derive that = Total ****

Even if you don't have much godzilla you're allowed to get away with it if you have good characters, every one is a tough gritty army guy who patches himself up with pieces of the american flag, you know, the overdone cliche which has no point in the movie, however the performance by said bryan cranston is the best one in the movie, however that's not saying much, everyone tries acting very serious but it just kinda comes off as forced and not heartfelt and has the same level of drama as a high school play

In this movie Godzilla has a new adversary, M.U.T.O. which are giant **** mantis like creatures, they are very weak but somehow they overpower godzilla, Twice, i like it when godzilla has a challenge but it falls apart if after like 4 minutes of fighting he just faceplants and goes to sleep, also the original had a perfect anti nuke message with the whole godzilla is a mutated creature from nuclear testing whereas this one just says godzilla is a **** dinosaur who just went to the bottom of the sea to feed off radiation from the earths core, if it was not for russians bumping into him he would have just slept through the M.U.T.O race taking over the earth. He has no point in the plot.

Also some minor gripes with the new design, While it is a good mix of 90's and 2000 Godzilla his mouth looks like a crocodile, and his roar is less terrifying and more Godzilla coughing because he has a cold, But the design is good enough for me to buy a action figure, so it's good enough,

In the end Godzilla just kinda goes back to the ocean, while the movie screams "GIVE US MORE MONEY FOR A SEQUEL!", which is a bit sad because they got just that, but that's a story for another review,

Godzilla is overhyped, A waste of money, And just a offence to the franchise, Zilla was better than this (Was named Godzilla but was renamed in order to not offend reality) at least it had the damn monster in it and characters doing **** that mattered, If it was not named Godzilla and instead was named M.U.T.O. I would of liked it a lot more because it would have reminded me of cheesy B-Grade Monster movies of the time. The most we can hope for is that the series does a Godzilla 2000, where ToHo come in and reboot the series after the americans **** it up, Or a Spiderman 2, Where the first one is to get the dosh, Second to please everyone, And Third one to just kill it for the original creators to revive it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Godzilla sold itself on Godzilla, not the slim Americanized version from the last US Godzilla movie, but a much closer to true version, roaming. All in all, there was an okay amount of action involving Godzilla. There was a lot more action not involving him, however. While the focus could have been Godzilla, it felt much more to be on a single soldier who happened to find himself in bad situations over and over, and still somehow live. Simply put, there was not enough lizard, and too much talking. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Aside from amazing visual effects and Bryan Cranston's terrific performance, Godzilla makes some very, VERY bad choices. While people are saying that it pays more homage to the 1954 film, I'd say that the design does, but the story and characters don't. When I walked out of the theater I didn't find ANY of the characters except for Cranston and Watanbe's memorable. There is good tension, but very little pay off. It constantly teases you with the monster fights and you see more of Godzilla in the trailers then the actual movie it's self. "But Godzilla was supposed to be like that! Haven't you ever seen the old one?" Yes, I have. And the new one is one of the worst Godzilla movie's I've ever seen. I'd be fine if they didn't tease you with fights and didn't have cardboard characters. Another thing to add, was Godzilla was the good guy. Yes, we have gone from bad ass anti-hero just trying to survive to saving the day good guy. And the dark tone? Well forget that! Because by the end people are screaming praise to him by the end of it and everyone makes it out alright. Oh yeah, You remember Cranston? That amazing actor they put in everything for our marketing and advertising? HAH! You actually thought they'd put him in for the whole movie! No, lets only kill him off! And make his boring son (I actually like Aaron-Taylor Johnson but in this movie, he's as emotionless as a rock) the main character. I also found the Muto very uninspired and expect them to be the main monsters, because Godzilla is just used as an excuse for them not to breed. This movie wasn't a "So bad it's good" movie like it's other 1998 American Remake, At least I had fun with the 98' one, but all this one did was just piss me off. Not recommended. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not in any way a bad adaption to the never-fading saga of the world's most famous monster. All I can say is there were great fight scenes, remarkable performance by Bryan Cranston, a somewhat back story. It is an enjoyable watch, there are parts at the end that will make most any viewer drop their jaw in awe of bad-assness. The real errors they made is killing off Cranston early on, could have ended up being a great father-son film rather than a separated husband-wife one, and they need to focus less on the military. I mean obviously the military is going to be largely involved, but it is in every movie like this. I love our troops, bravest men out there, but I came to watch a movie about this creature. Obviously there has to be some random made-up character's back story in order to get a point of view from someone and to fill two-thrids of the movie. Too bad the lead character was so bland, unmotivated and forgettable though. Like I said, it is an enjoyable watch. Godzilla himself definitely makes up for it. Expand

I enjoyed seeing all the Godzilla action and the fight scenes between him and those other creatures that appear in the film. I will warn you that Godzilla will not be seen in this film that much, in fact there is a lot of teases in this film where you think you're about to see Godzilla in action, but then it would get cut off. I will say that the scenes that involve human drama though are actually good and there is even a pretty emotional scene near the beginning. I do hope that if this film ever gets a sequel, that it will have more fight scenes in it, but for now I do want to say that this was good even if you felt that the "main star" didn't feel like the main star. If you can deal with that one flaw and actually try to engage with the decent human drama, then this film will be enjoyable. Expand

Well, you Could go see Godzilla. OR... and this is just a suggestion.
Go home.
Turn the lights off.
Watch the discovery channel.
Burn some paper so there's lots of smoke in the air.
And listen to dubstep.
Honestly, you'll get a lot more out of that than you will out of the ear-ache-inducing, shrill, and what-felt-like-decades-long exhaustive study into american psychology or "why john everyman doesn't care about anything and neither should you" that is this epic.
Honestly, the best parts of this film are right at the start with Bryan Cranston lending some emotional weight to why we should give a damn about tremors. After he dies, the slack is picked up by his son, the aforementioned everysoldier who doesn't care. In the end, I ended up agreeing with him.
I would've been happy with a monster flick - I also would've been happy with an emotional action flick.
I wasn't happy with the only useful actor being killed in the first 30 minutes and the rest of the film showing mostly standard 'disaster movie' tropes such as:
adults yelling "run" then not running
soldiers shooting guns at things that quite obviously can't be touched by guns
children looking placid in the face of terror
a scientist explaining the plotline
a girlfriend who you don't give a **** about reunited with the main character that you don't give a **** about
bass drones so constant you'll be wondering if there's a subway tunnel under the theatre

Don't be fooled - this is amateur dreck pumped up with a massive budget. Hang out until the next pacific rim, or even transformers, god forbid.

If I didn't care about any of the human characters before Godzilla finally shows up, then I thought the movie would be so boring. Thankfully I liked the human characters especially Bryan Cranston and I had a fun ride. This movie felt a lot like Jurassic Park to me. Godzilla is like the T-Rex. When he finally shows up, then the movie went from good to AWESOME. Sure they teased him too much until the final fight and I almost wanted to yell in the theaters because of that. But the fight alone is worth the ticket price.

Godzilla is only in the movie for about 30 minutes and he finally shows at the one hour mark. I found it hilarious that "Zilla" in '98 Godzilla is shown way more than this Godzilla. However they took the quality over quantity approach and it delivered. The score was outstanding. It really sounds like an old school Godzilla movie. The angles, the way it was shot, it was so beautiful to look at. My most favorite shot is when Godzilla finally arrives and the camera pans from his feet to his face and he roars. He is gigantic. The creators actually treat him like an animal instead of a guy in a suit and he is believable.

The MUTOs aren't special. I honestly thought they're the Cloverfield monster. But the final is awesome. I can't wait for a sequel and I remember long ago that Guillermo Del Toro wanted to make Pacific Rim 2 with Godzilla. I highly doubt it but I want this to happen.

This movie... really lacks something...

I am not complaining about the lack of Godzilla in the movie or anything like that... but general choices that makes me scratch my head and ask "why?". Why do we need an American family living in Japan? Did the movie makers though that we wouldn't sympathize with the characters unless they where generic American stereotypes? Why a forced death scene? Oh yeah... because we need to have one of our characters being obsessed about his wife's death trying to find this monster, of course... Why treat the movie like it's "Transformers"? and like that I have many more "why's"...

Is not a BAD movie ok?... I know the directer is very good at working on special effects and it shows, the monster design is great and... yeah... I think I get why some people were calling this Godzilla "fat".

The original Godzilla movie was not just a monster movie, it was a tragedy and it shows in the way that movie portraits the situation and that is what I expected from this one... maybe I expected too much from it...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie gave me the same feeling after watching Batman Begins and Man of Steel. This is a step in the right direction and hopefully a very thought provoking opportunity to make an action packed franchise. This movie is the exact opposite of Pacific Rim. PR had amazing action, visual effects, and a very noisy soundtrack. This was moody, dark, and the visuals weren't its strongest suit. The key here is how people react to natural disasters. Many critics have already mentioned that this Godzilla is not a metaphor of man-made nuclear war but nature-made disasters. The creatures in this film including Godzilla are all giant metaphors for how mother nature will do what she wishes and she will correct the earth accordingly. Not even military might will stop these forces of nature, just another force of nature can. Ken Watanabe explains this explicitly towards the end of the film for those still wondering the lack of a "Godzilla vs the Monsters" type of smack down. The ending of the film even refers to Godzilla as "The King of the Monsters." Probably a taste of things to come. This film has proven to be a very generous appetizer. Here's to hoping Edwards has a slightly bigger budget to play next time. Pacific Rim was like pounding beers with friends on a hot summer day. Godzilla was like sipping a fine bourbon or cognac on a cold, rainy night. Expand

While this genre is quite old, it doesn't stop this re-make being of a decent quality. A nice twist in the story keeps originality flowing, but the genre has been worn thin to where a sequel to this remake would spoil everything.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For fans it might be a disappointing movie because the movie seems to enjoy showing Godzilla for a few minutes and taking him away when you expect him to fight with the other monster. I get that - also terrible acting by the lead and the guy that you get to connect with dies after 15 minutes. However if you did not have orgasms about the movie before you saw it or if you have never hear of Godzilla before, it is a good monster movie - keeps the suspense till the last minute and pretty nice effects and brutal killing. This might be a franchise starter unlike the 90s hollywood version which sucked. Also liked the ancient apex predator thing, it is a small thing but a very smart way to make the experience more relatable and realistic. This movie is like the Man of Steel of the Superman franchise; it is there to divide audience into two groups almost equal in size, it certainly has cool destruction scenes and the tone of a thriller. I generally liked it but I doubt that I would watch it again if somehow it gets streamed on television sometime later. Expand

This is a film which is supposed to be about monsters fighting monsters, but seems intent on focusing as little attention as possible on the incredible struggle between two monoliths, to concentrate on a decent, but far from original story of a 'man torn away from family, and suffering to fight for his family' tale. The craziest part of this whole film isn't what's in it, but rather, what ISN'T in it, primarily Godzilla himself. Like seriously, they mention godzilla a few times at the start of the film, but the next 40 mins isn't even about Godzilla, it's about some other plot instead. Godzilla then briefly appears, and boy when he appears for his 4 minutes, he sure is an awesome sight to behold...until we switch back to some annoying plot about how the military keep on angsting like a teenage girl before prom about how they can't kill the beast, and how ineffective they are, and so on and so forth. For me personally, this feels like a few parts of an A+ film sprinkled over what is essentially a B movie. Bryan Cranston is awesome(as always), making his personal tragedy felt even across the screen, and portraying his role as haunted paranoid in a brilliant fashion...which makes everything else look ridiculous when you see how unenthused the other actors seem to be in their roles. Even the Godzilla special effects are amazing, when they actually show them...but that makes the 90% of the film where Godzilla is absent(and he is absent, not like a 'i'm doing something awesome' absent, but more like a 'I show up, wreck **** for 5 mins, then return back to the sea for some relaxing swimming for the next 50 mins' absent) feel so incredibly dry and sterile. For the action sequences, I hope you enjoy watching 100 foot lizards wrestling with 80 foot monsters...ON A CRAPPY TV FOR 30 SECONDS(seriously, look at the movie where Godzilla first appears and the kid is watching TV, and that is how long it's shown for).

Don't be enticed by the A+ special effects or 20 mins of Bryan Cranston into looking at 60 minutes of essentially nothing of note. This is not worth your time, and should be renamed from 'Godzilla' to 'Walking with MUTOs', because the only thing this documentary(not action film) is lacking is a David Attenborough voiceover.

Let's face it before the movie starts we basically know how this movie is going to end. Massive monster battles, complete destruction and chaos, all done with amazing high budget special effects.

Sadly its just another movie for the audience to switch their brains off and enjoy the ride, with no real cerebral requirements.

If that's your kind of movie than you will enjoy the ride. If you want to know what to expect, just watch any transformers movie or marvel movie. and that's what you have. Accept of course with Godzilla.

A little back-story on my history with Godzilla film! About 14 years ago my Nana had a stroke that has left her paralyzed completely. Being only 21 I hardly remember her pre-stroke self, but one of the last memories I have with her is the week leading up to the 1998 Godzilla movie. We watched all of the classic versions, including the original and most of the trash ones, and then went to go see the garbage that was/is the Emmerich version in theatres together. Needless to say Godzilla means a bit more to me than just a goofy monster movie, which I also love. So did the new adaptation live up to the hype?

Honestly that’s a tough question to answer! Personally, I loved the movie, but there were issues that were tough to overlook. The script was so atrocious that not even Bryan Cranston could save it, and don’t let the trailers fool you because Cranston is not in the movie nearly enough. I can imagine when the cast got their individual scripts they held it in their hands and thought, “Wow, it’s really small!” There was hardly any actual dialogue, more or less an entire movie of uncaptioned Japanese or military commands. It really lacked substance and thus made the human components dull and boring. Honestly, I don’t know what’s to blame for the lack of chemistry between Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen! Was it the poor script? Or the brotherly sisterly thing from Age of Ultron! With that said, Aaron really handled the action packed sequences with grace, making them feel real.

One thing nobody can take away from this movie is how it made you feel. The ambiance, I know that’s a weird description for a monster movie, it felt so real! The hopelessness and despair leaked out of the screen and into the crowd. This is largely in part due to the effects being astounding. Godzilla, for once in his career, looked flawless! I’m a big fan of the bigger, rounder, more authentic looking creature that they’ve re-created with the newer technology. Another key factor to the movies feel is the soundtrack, which was simply flawless. Half way through the movie I turned to my fiancé and said, “This soundtrack is insane!” He simply smiled and shook his head excitedly. Rarely in these monster movies is the soundtrack so perfectly done, and it truly was a treat.

The story was very typical of these types of films. Disaster occurs, plan is made, plan is ruined, and plan is changed, and then repeats the cycle about 10 times. At times it felt like I was watching Armageddon, can a dude catch a break at all? Problem after problem after problem made it seem like Godzilla had a goal to ruin this one kids day. However, the story had some interesting components not showed in previews and trailers that made for plot substance that cannot be argued.

All in all Godzilla was a great monster movie, and one of the best adaptations we’ve had in years. While the lackluster script and lack of Cranston were strong negatives, the film was still a success. The action scenes, special effects, and impressive soundtrack kept everything interesting. True to the original Godzilla form this movie will be able to hold up to it’s predecessors, but will never surpass. ShaunaOH gives Godzilla (2014) an 8.1/10!

A very good Godzilla movie. I am glad we saw the creatures well enough to see the 3D arts.
It was long in the beginning before we could see Godzilla.
Godzilla was well done, very bad ass.

This movie "humanizes" everyone even Godzilla himself. disregard the old movies made by toho. The spin offs and all that **** Godzilla went through. Acting is decent enough Aaron Taylor Johnson was OK for me. The script didn't give him much so you really can't blame him. THIS IS Godzilla. He is back better than ever. I just hope that the sequel would stop teasing us with Godzilla by showing him off screen on the news. Learn from pacific rim. Embrace the carnage Godzilla brings because that is what makes a Godzilla film. Awesome reboot/ sequel to the original. Fans of the old franchise will love it. Now let's forget about that **** movie called "Godzilla" in 1998 or we would like to call it "zilla" Expand

There are many times that the film builds up an epic fight between Godzilla and the two other monsters, yet the film will cut away and the entire fight will be off screen. When Godzilla is finally allowed to fight on screen, not only is it spliced with the human story so much that it becomes anticlimactic, but Godzilla spends the entire fight on his heals getting his butt kicked until the human character saves him. There is a disturbing lack of Godzilla, and when he even shows up you wish you were watching a better Godzilla movie as he is portrayed to be incompetent. Expand

The plot was ok, but do people really see a god damn Godzilla movie for an excellent storyline? I see monster movies to be entertained.

The movie did a great job building up tension for Godzilla's appearance. Though the movie focused a lot on human drama, the final 30 minutes of the movie made up for everything. Godzilla beating the living crap out out of monsters, smashing buildings and causing chaos. Now that's what I wanted to see from a Godzilla movie.

When Godzilla grabbed Rodan by the neck, held his jaws open and let out a huge burst of atomic fire into his mouth, I almost shat my pants.

Overall, this movie is worth seeing for the sheer spectacle of it, but not for anything more than that.

For the most part, the action sequences were magnificently well shot and Bryan Cranston rocked it in the film. Some flaws i had was that some of the characters didn't really matter to the story. It felt like the characters were shoe-horned to fit in this cinematic universe. Also, some of the story arcs while meaningful at times don't really work with this movie is really trying/needs to be. I know people also had problems about not seeing enough Godzilla, but honestly with all the monster madness going on throughout the movie, it didn't really bother me. A Godzilla that ACTUALLY looks original? Check. Other monsters besides Godzilla? Check. I could go on and on about all the stuff you see in the trailers, but I have a review to make and a statement to say. My statement? Godzilla (GZ) is, without a doubt, a spectacular film overall, and one of the most special films to come to this genre in years. GZ is ambitious, creative, destructive, and AWESOME. What's special about GZ compared to other action and GZ films is that it mixes so much into it. GZ actually has a fair amount of human drama. With this, GZ makes you care about the characters and you might actually hope to God that they don't die when destruction hits. Before the big guy is revealed, the movie makes you feel fear. Gareth Edwards proves he is brilliant because he knows audiences will want to see the big guy pretty soon once they get in there. To keep audiences satisfied, he puts another monster in there brilliantly before the big guy comes. How was the acting? Extremely good. Aaron Taylor-Johnson should really be in other action movies after this. Bryan Cranston? You know what you're getting with that amazing actor. The others are almost as good. However, when Aaron Taylor-Johnson travels across the country with the army, I really felt that if he had another great character with him his journey would have fared better. But how is the action? It is extremely destructive. It has a much larger scale with the giant monsters, which you might dislike. Me? I loved every second of it, but I did feel that in the third and most violent act, the destruction could have used a little bit of more variety. Plus, it did get frustrating from time to time when they cut off the action and go back to the drama. Like I said, I loved the human drama. It just got a little tedious there. Despite these small flaws, GZ is phenomenal. This might actually be the first movie I have reviewed and recommend to everyone. And I do. Since the users can't use a 100 scale for scoring, I gotta give it a 10. Expand

This mainly focused on other monsters, and Godzilla was only in for about 15 minutes of the movie. I was extremely bored during the film. There wasn't enough action either. Also, there was a lack of dialogue. When there was dialogue, it was very vague. I thought this movie would be better. This isn't even a Godzilla movie. If you are a Godzilla fan, skip this. Godzilla saves the city and doesn't fight with anyone at all in the film. Expand

My only complaint is thatI have been a Godzilla fan for almost 18 years, and this movie is certainly up there in my list of favorites. Godzilla looks like the one people are familiar with while sporting an updated look for modern audiences. My only complaint is that the acting is mostly stale and unconvincing (except in Brian Cranston's case). There are also a few plot holes that you may not immediately recognize until you leave the theater. However, it did not detract from my experience.

Just keep in mind that Gareth Edwards teases Godzilla throughout the movie. His strategy of using "cinematic foreplay" to build anticipation is daring, yet especially effective. Godzilla offers something different from the regular Summer fare in this regard. While the wait for action may make you restless, just wait it out; you'll get what you came for.

Be warned: If you do not tolerate slow movies that tease a lot, you will not enjoy this movie. Personally, I would only recommend it to Godzilla fans, as a lot of people seem to have varied opinions concerning its quality. Many people went to see this movie expecting an exorbitant amount of action akin to most blockbusters; don't do that. You will be disappointed if you do.

If the film had more of this it would have been at least a nine. There are some good bits without him though especially at the beginning where a lot of the tension is being built and there are some good proformances there but then when it feels like it's godzilla time to take the stage we instead get another boring story line following a soldier as we have seen many times before. The reason I am so sad about it is that there seems to be so much potential that just isn't realised and so I would love to see a sequel as I believe there is real potential here. Expand

There is a thing called, "suspense" that a lot of movies lack nowadays. I loved the teasing because that's when you know they got you hooked. Many monster movie franchises in the past pulled this off effectively and no one complained about it. Let’s start off with Alien and the way that teases us little by little on what it looks like as it kills people one by one. The next one is Predator. This one is completely camouflaged killing squad members until Arnold is the only one left to finally show himself. Just look at movies like Jaws, Dragonslayer, Terminator, The hidden, Jurassic Park, The abyss and many others. This is a great formula because it keeps you in anticipation. Pacific Rim was pure garbage from beginning to end. I'm glad this movie didn't follow that path because then there’s nothing for you to look forward to. Children probably liked Pacific Rim just like another movie called Transformers. These are movies that failed to have an on par story. All they are is multimillion dollar toy commercials from beginning to end in which by the time the movie is over you wind up with a migraine. There’s no suspense or WOW moment unlike what the new Godzilla movie accomplished. There are enough Godzilla WOW moments and Trailer scenes that were newly edited which no one talks about. This made every Godzilla scene new to me. Also I will say that I have seen every Godzilla movie and I will say that this one had more screen time than each of those other ones. Now with talks of a sequel they will probably add more fight scenes but they have to stick to this formula. Expand

The plot of the movie is centered around a family that I developed no attachment whatsoever to, so maybe that's why I was a bit underwhelmed with this film. Think District 9 with monsters instead of aliens. Fast forward four years later, thanks to the critical success of his first full length indie feature, and Edwards, who has been given the keys to the commercial kingdom, is front and centre in adapting the King of Monsters in only the second Americanized version since the abysmal yet highly popcorn-crunchingly entertaining Godzilla remake from Roland Emmerich from 1998. Entrusted with a massive $160 million dollar budget from Warner Bros. Pictures, after acquiring the rights of the iconic beast from Toho in 2010, Edwards proves that Godzilla reigns at destroying one thing, and one thing only, the promise of young filmmakers career’s.

Godzilla is a large beast to discuss in one review or twenty-seven for that matter (since there has been about twenty-seven film adaptations of the beast) since his birth back in 1954. For his sixtieth birthday, Godzilla has been given the royal treatment, having its largest budget to date, a strong international cast, and the biggest presence on screen thanks to a belief that bigger is better. That belief is shot down with the help of this film. With screens growing in size (IMAX, AVX, etc.), ticket prices getting a radioactive hike and the God of Monsters terrorizing cities solely based on its sheer size, something’s gotta give, but never does.

For the first time in the creature’s existence, Godzilla is not the centre of attention. In fact, the monster itself only makes up for mere minutes of the film. Adopting a very Nolan-esque, if not J.J Abrams approach to minimizing the beast’s reveal before the film’s premiere and within the film, Edwards focuses less on the destruction of Godzilla, and more on the presence monsters have on a small group of people on earth. Basically, a rehashing of Edwards’ Monsters, with a much bigger budget.

Unfortunately for Edwards, instead of keeping his vision and artistic integrity intact, he decides to allow Hollywood, and the symbol of Godzilla himself, to consume him, into something I like to call, the symptoms of a Hollywood film. Edwards succumbs to; foggy glass shots where characters wipe their windows for a big reveal at the monster; children noticing things before adults, monsters and rain (lots of it) and my favourite, crazy guy who proves us all that he wasn’t crazy. Godzilla is one big ‘told ya so’, when the summer blockbuster season is a large example of so many times we go into a film, hoping to be surprised, but being delivered exactly what we expected instead.

Like any other huge blockbuster film recently (see: The Watchmen, X: Men First Class, The Wolverine), the film begins to explain the origins of the giant lizard, this time dating it back to radioactive testings done in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the 1940′s. Deep rooted in one of the most tragic time’s in our world’s history, Dr. Ichiro Serizawa (Ken Wantanabe) explains how the radioactive bombs were done less as a test, and more of a means to destroy the unexplained and mysterious creature found deep in the ocean. Unknown to scientists then, but the monstrosity fed off the radiation being used, making it stronger as opposing to killing it. Since his disappearance, the God of Creatures has since been absent from the world. Until, in 1999, when engineer Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston in his most annoying role yet) experiences the devastation of electrical shocks taking out the power at his radioactive plant, that leads to chaos and causes him to lose his wife Sandra Brody (Juliette Binoche) and many of his co-workers. Left to raise his son Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) alone, Ford grows up becoming a bomb specialist for the United States Army (how appropriate), distancing his father from his family due to his obsession with the mysteries of the events the day his wife was taken from him. Fifteen years later and after returning after fourteen months on tour, Ford returns to San Francisco to his wife Elle (Elizabeth Olsen) and his son Sam (Carson Bolde), only to be summoned by his father for some unfinished business that might lead the end of the world as we know it.

The summer movie season has recently been infamous for spewing out relentless amounts of superhero films and unexpected heroes. Godzilla is no different than any of these films, finding an unlikely hero in the process of ripping the essence of the ferocity and symbolic destructive nature that is Godzilla. One of the biggest problems of this adaptation of Godzilla lies in the dubious marketing tactics for the film.

The emotional disconnect and the way the characters react so unaffectedly to giant monsters really pulled me out of the experience. Also, Godzilla was severely underused and should've fought less generic CGI monsters. They should've pitted him against another iconic Godzilla monster, or make Godzilla the bad guy. All I can say is I was disappointed with the execution of the movie. It's not a bad movie; it's shot quite well and has interesting audio/visual techniques, but overall it's not worth seeing. Expand

The movie is called Godzilla but its really the story of Aaron Taylor Johnson. He has 4x more screen time than the titular character and despite being a good actor, I think most of his scenes did nothing to advance the plot. When you have a larger than life character like Godzilla, you focus on him because that is whom your audiences came to see. The Godzilla reveal took far to long to happen, and by the time it did, he only gets a few seconds of screen time before the camera pans to a long scene with the human actors.

There is a line from Ken Wanatabe in the movie that perfectly sums up what the audience was denied: "Let them fight". It was that simple. While hoping for a slugfest between kaiju where Godzilla shows why he is the King of the Monsters, we were instead given a frustrating tease of a movie that could have been something truly epic. If the makers of Godzilla want to know how to do a Kaiju movie right, they should go watch Pacific Rim.

I walked away from the theater with a huge smile on my face and an "I can't wait to see that again" feeling. It might be the first movie in over a decade that I will go back to see at the theater more than once. I loved it, and the fight between the MUTO and Godzilla was such an awesome payoff, the teasing throughout was frustrating but in a good way. It was nice to see a movie play with this kind of tease, not just blow your load halfway through you know? Like how many times would we want to see Godzilla fight the same guys in the same setting?

You can't please them all, and most people who come on sites like IGN tend to be boring old bastards who just like to find things to **** about. People tend to forget that movies started as a form of entertainment, and to me, THAT is the only stick which I use to measure a movies greatness, and this movie was ABSOLUTELY entertaining.

The people complaining about there being not enough Godzilla, as this is an origin movie, you can't expect him to just stomp his way through the first scene.

I really like that they downplayed the human significance in this movie, and made it mostly about the Kaiju. The humans were no doubt the main driving force behind the plot, but at the same time they seemed like a background element in the movie. This fascinating mix was a nice change of pace. At the end of the day, it must be difficult to balance the human/Kaiju elements of the story, in a movie like this, but we have to ask ourselves, do we really WANT the human element to be more present than what it was? In a movie about giant monsters fighting each other?

When the Military devised it's brainless plan of nuking all 3 Kaiju I nearly died of disappointment, to see a movie I was loving so much play with such a stupid idea...... then I got to watch the MUTO's take that idea, and rip it to piece's, in the exact way it deserved to be.

My only disappointment, was that Bryan Cranston died way too quickly, I would have liked to see Cranston and Aaron Taylor swap places in the story. I agree with the writers that having both characters exist in the movies plot would have been very silly and too cliché.

The best moment, was hands down, Godzilla breathing his radioactive breath down the MUTO's throat, so....freaking....boss.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is definately worth seeing. Godzilla is just amazing, and the two Mutos he fights look amazing as well, the action was awesome and the Human characters didn't really get boring. Some things i didn't like were that the human characters didn't have much effect on the story and Godzilla didn't have a motive for fighting the Muto's, for some reason he just decides to fight some monsters. Also it was weird how he didn't harm and humans. Over the story and action were great, i recommend watching it. 8/10 Expand

A Michael Bay scale movie without his Red Bull hyperactivity. I was just a little skeptical going in but this is the kind of studio tent-pole film that Hollywood every now and then somehow gets right. The filmmakers wisely keep the title monster behind the curtain well into the film to build up anticipation. After all, there's no mistaking from the title what you have plunked down your movie dollars for. This ain't Woody Allen...

The actors are all solid and have the right approach to their scenes: no over-acting here. They commit to the urgency of their situations, not the notion that nuclear-hungry, giant prehistoric monsters are having a throwdown across the Pacific Ocean. The humanity of their stories is simple but effective. And the titanic monster battles in San Francisco are shrouded in crumbling rubble, smoke, fog, and rain which lend a certain atmospheric look that doesn't push the viewer away but instead draws us in as we strain to see who is throwing the most seismic haymakers.

The absence of too much "dumb" sci-fi exposition in the script is frankly refreshing. The explanation of certain plot lines resonate (I didn't say plausibly) with recent events in real world disasters, particularly the Japanese tsunami impact a few years ago that led to a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

It's all good. There is a curious use of music from "2001" used in a sunset military HALO jump scene, but it just serves to amp up the tension as the soldiers drop into the battle below. Perhaps Kubrick would even enjoy that.

Some of the best FX I've had the pleasure of seeing and watching Godzilla beat the living sh*t out of the MUTO's on the big screen was a dream come true. An all around great film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I almost gave this a 9 since Bryan Cranston died so early on, and that the main character was pretty damn boring. Other than that this movie is fantastic. No annoying love story, excellent action when there is some, and amazing special effects. The best part could almost be the design of Godzilla himself.

All in all, great film.

I have to say the 3D was horrendous. Regarding the movie, the idea behind the plot was great, however the story jumped around alot and the EOD specialist (son of the father) had no real purpose in the movie whatsoever. All he did was set the boat out into the ocean away from land. He would have died had he not passed out. I have to disagree with some posters regarding Godzillas onscreen time. It wasn't enough. I am not concerned with previous movies, as this is not a previous movie. With CGI this movie was done way to much in the dark with Godzilla fighting, with very little seen from him. They kept cutting away which was really annoying. I have to say at times I was fairly bored. There are elements I enjoyed however the movie as a whole was mediocre at best. Expand
