While the soundtrack to the movie is one of the most exceptional work (the overly indulged) Hans Zimmer has put forward recently. The movie is exceptional and intriguing to watch albeit through its appropriate slow-paced scenes that are full of intensity, feeling, and suspense. All put together picture perfectly and carried out immaculately by all involved. Its ending however - left much to be desired as it feels terribly unfulfilled and inconclusive. Putting increased pressure on the sequel to go above and beyond in fulfilling audiences on all that both movies should be. Expand

I like the cinematography, aesthetic value and resemblance to the book. This is generally speaking, but Dune is "un-filmable". I appreciate Villeneuve's effort, it surely is a marvel, but the ending of the movie feels slightly rushed.

The Dune finally got the movie adaptation it deserves. The movie is amazing with everything it has. Cinematography and soundtrack are on another level. And it sticks to the books and doesn't ruin the story at all. I love it, amazing work.

Stunning visuals and one of Hans Zimmer’s best scores pair together to bring to life an incredible sci-fi epic. Chalamet does well in his first blockbuster role and is supported by a solid cast. Should be seen on the big screen.

The visuals in this movie are stellar and really take your breath away. The acting is also very good here. The main problem with this film is that it largely serves as an introduction to the series. Which will be good in a few years but hurts it now.

And, of course, George Miller, who redefined'Dune' is a clear example of how a blockbuster can have an auteur's vision. Although I don't like James Cameron films —except for the Terminator ones and 'Aliens'—, he's also on that small list. And, of course, George Miller, who redefined the action genre with the thunderous 'Fury Road.' Denis Villeneuve did it with 'Blade Runner 2049,' and he's done it again with his version of Frank Herbert's classic.

In a time where blockbusters have to follow a strict formula to be "successful" in the box office, 'Dune' defies all expectations by going slowly, showing instead of telling almost all the time, and employing an uncommon visual style for this type of films. I mean, which action movie will dare to darken the image to the point of almost fading to black? Villeneuve took a high risk, but it was rewarding.

This feels like a good adaptation of the novel, developing the narrative in a very straightforward way, with little focus on the subplots. Almost all the characters deliver, despite some appearing as little as five minutes. But most importantly, Villeneuve and the writers keep the ecological and anti-capitalist themes of the novel, emphasizing water as the most valuable thing we have. Come on, even a character says that there is no more valuable wealth someone can offer than the water in their body.

Some could say that the film invests too much time foreshadowing the events of the hypothetical second part, but Villeneuve and his team are very clever by incorporating this into the narrative itself; the prophecy of what will become of Paul and everyone else around him. Of course, 'Dune' feels like a half, a very good one, but still incomplete. But there's no denying that Villeneuve was the right man to finally make justice to this saga.

I never read the book but knew a little about the world from playing one of the video games as a kid. I also could never get into the 1984 film version, and just thought it was OK, and did not have very high hopes for this film either. Definitely was surprised, and it looked great on my widescreen. If you feel safe enough to go to a theater, this would be a movie to see in it (IMAX even better) but if not...it will likely still look and sound great on any decent system. Its a strong enough film, that it can work on the small screen imo. The key being...I felt like I could connect with the character, whereas in the 1984 version it just felt like a lot of...information.....there was not much to connect to in the original. This film is beautifully shot, and sets up the story pretty well, and keeps you engaged. Really good acting, sound, music, and the action picks up in the 2nd half. Amazing counter to Star Wars as its a bit more serious, like a DC version of Star Wars, with elements of Lawrence of Arabia, and Gladiator. Easily 8/10 and would be 9/10 except for the fact that it doesn't really complete the story as..it is just part 1...therefore...part 2 + 3 would likely also be...8 or 9/10. (if done by the same team etc.) It needs to happen. Expand

Dune may suffer from a slow start, but as the film progresses and its narrative develops it becomes a welcome addition to the seemingly dead genre of Long, narrative driven Blockbusters.

At the start the characters can come across as a little flat, and there is a lot of terminology and lore to learn relatively quickly, but the payoffs for all this buildup are worth the initial grind. The universe of the film itself is intriguing, and its sense of atmosphere and tension grows more and more investing as the story progresses.

“Desert power!”

Long ago…in a galaxy far far away…before ‘Star Wars’, ‘Mad Max’, ‘Tremors’, and ‘Game of Thrones’.... there was only ‘Dune’.

A story and world that gave birth to fantasy and Sci-Fi as we know it, as a main influence and many more for years to come. Although, I haven’t seen the other adaptions of ‘Dune’ with either of the Lynch or TV version. So, this is my first introduction to the world and characters, and something that was once considered unadaptable has become a reality all thanks to Denis Villeneuve vision. And now I'm interested in this world and the movie leaves you wanting more.

'Dune (2021)' - man what a trip. Incredible in every sense. Just like ‘Blade Runner 2049’, nobody does art house blockbusters better than Denis Villeneuve. A Sci-Fi tale of philosophical richness that's loaded with grand spectacle. While I didn't see it in IMAX, but that didn't take away from the scope of it all.

No joke, but this could be our new Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

The acting here is strong:

Timothée Chalamet has impressed me ever since his breakout role in ‘Call Me by Your Name’, so it’s not surprising that he did an excellent job in this movie as the character of Paul, the young man in royalty whose destiny can lead him in either direction. Not bad for a kid who started off showing off his X-Box controllers on YouTube. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, type into YouTube “ModdedController360” and you’ll see.

Oscar Isaac plays The Duke, the father of Paul, and Oscar Isaac has yet to deliver a terrible performance. There's one scene between him and Chalamet that was one of the most moving things I've seen in a Sci-Fi movie since...well, 'Arrival' and 'Blade Runner 2049'.

Rebecca Ferguson plays Lady Jessica Atreides, who is easily the heart of the movie, and it might be my favourite performance from her.

Jason Momoa plays Duncan, the ultimate Chad, who’s a chill guy but is an absolute demon when it comes to fighting. Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, a cool but serious man who loyal to those close to him. Stellan Skarsgård scenes as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the bloated and slimy creature with a hunger for power and chaos, which also pays a wonderful homage to Marlon Brando’s Colonel Walter E. Kurtz in ‘Apocalypse Now’, through the visuals in every scene he’s in. Also, despite the small screen time he had, but Dave Bautista has proved that he has more range as an actor than most wrestlers who turned to acting.

Zendaya isn't in the movie that much, but I know she will be in the next movie. Her little scenes were very mystical. She appears mostly in visions from Chalamet’s Paul, which people have best described those “visions” as the most expensive perfume advert ever.

In terms of the visual effects and the practical work, it’s a piece of art. It helps create a sense of scope that made everything feel so big, so real and so engaging to watch. I can say all of it looked pitch perfect. But also using real locations for open spaces and made certain bits of environment like heat from the actual desert, harsh winds, soggy rainy, grass, and the breath-taking landscapes seem familiar to us in this “alien world”.

The score, make-up, costumes, production design, cinematography, editing, sound, and direction were all top notches.

However, the movie does feel like a part 1 and for some people the movie feels incomplete, story wise. But then again, if it leaves you wanting more and we now know we are getting a part 2 to this story, this issue will expire when the second one comes around.

The cinematography, score, acting, and costume design is all top notch. The decision to change the opening from the novel to a battle sequence involving Fremen and Harkonnen followed by a introduction of Caladan does a better job of setting up what’s at stake and the complex political background. I still have concerns those who haven’t read the novel will be totally lost.

Oddly enough despite being 2.5 hours and over the first half of the first book, certain pivotal scenes felt very rushed. Major plot points involving the Duke Leto almost feel glossed over because there’s no time to reflect on the significance of what just happened or how it affects other characters before rushing on to the next part of the journey.

Lastly, there were a couple visual touches I found distracting. The body shield creating both blur and a color change upon contact took me out of the combat sequences and made it difficult to follow the fight. Also as a guy who appreciates a healthy amount of blood in his action movies to compliment the violence on screen, Dune’s combat felt very sterile to the point of bordering on PG end of the PG-13 spectrum instead of R. A must see in theaters for those who enjoyed the novel. I’d encourage fans of plot driven sci fi to also see in theaters, or sci fans interested in seeing a novel put to screen that had a huge historical impact on the genre. If you’re a fan of action heavy sci fi, you may find yourself bored. The kid next to me fell asleep and started snoring despite being in the front row of an 8:30 showing. Please go see in theaters not HBO Max so we can get a sequel!!

I’ve finally seen theThe highly anticipated adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel Dune and a remake of the 1984 version by David Lynch. Yeah I know I’m very late to the party with this review, don’t blame me it’s been a mental year. I’ve finally seen the visually spectacular Dune and much like the fanbase for the original cult classic this new remake is sure to bring in a whole new bunch of sci-fi fans.

Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is the son of a noble family and must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. Also starring Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård and Josh Brolin. A truly brilliant line up of talent altogether and Denis Villeneuve was the perfect director to take on a new Dune adaptation. Throw in a completely full on Hans Zimmer score and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a modern day epic. A highly immersive cinematic experience with incredible attention to detail. Everything is allowing you to fall into this new world and lose yourself in the magic of cinema. Epic really is the word to describe it, I’ve also seen the phrase space opera to describe Dune and I’d agree that’s an accurate description. I love the star studded cast but particularly Timothée Chalamet leading the movie, he gives an excellent performance. As a Zimmer fan it’s no surprise I loved the awe-inspiring score for Dune. The visuals, the music and the entire cast all perfectly complement each other to create an epic sci-fi movie.

I haven’t seen the original or read the book so I’ve no idea where the story is going next but I am excited for Dune Part II and together I’d expect Part I and II to make a terrific double bill. As amazing as Dune is it’s still only half a movie and I do feel frustrated that it’s split into two separate movies with likely a two year gap in between them. It won’t become clear until Part II as to whether separating it into two films will be worth it though in most cases splitting a story in two only results in a dragged out movie with a wrecked story arc, looking at you Hobbit trilogy. I can’t say everyone will feel the same but for me the feeling of all set up for a good portion of Dune Part I was annoying and I can only hope Part II is worth it.

It can be a daunting task to take on a big budget sci-fi movie and bring some originality to the genre especially when there’s an endless parade of Star Wars movies and TV shows to complete with. Villeneuve has shown us what he is capable of with Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. With Dune, he has not only created one of the best looking sci-fi movies in years but made something that feels new in a world of unoriginality. Recommended for all the sci-fi fans.

First the good - There's basically 2 ways to approach a film with source material such as this. Either make it "fun-size", and palatable with people who purely want escapism (i.e the mass public), or try and evoke the nuance and political complexity interwoven throughout Herbert's novel. I'm frankly really glad they went the latter avenue, and overall I think the info overload actually pays off well. The acting, special effects, cinematography, aesthetic, costumes, and overall feel was stellar. It felt epic without being pretentious, and I would imagine seeing it on the big screen (yes, I'm one of the toadies who streamed it) would only add to the awe. However, much of the dialogue and the pacing were rather bland. A lot of pure exposition. As I said, all the actors did a really good job (with the possible exception of Javier Bardem, who's accent was jarringly distracting to me. Why does he sound so drastically different to the rest of the Fremen? I half-expected him to say "fine, we'll settle it with my lucky quarter" at any moment) but with an oft one-dimensional script, there's only so much that can be done.

And lastly, my real chagrin. The pacing. I don't know if the original novel frankly has enough sourced material to warrant two long movies. This movie is 2 1/2 hours. They could so easily trim 30 minutes. A major pet-peeve of mine in any movie is when they have a bunch of slowed-down walking scenes, void of any dialogue. There's a TON of said shots riddled throughout the film, that only makes the rather slowed-pace only feel uncomfortably more so. And they could have been clearer. Hard to tell who's who and even what faction is what sometimes.

I did enjoy it. I'm super excited for part 2. I don't however, recommend it to people who are on the fence about seeing it, or aren't a sci-fi/Dune fan. I just wish that when thinking about it a day later, I wasn't focused on questionable approaches or confoundment with certain elements. The Worms are worth the price of admission.

Empfehlenswert!

Keep in mind that this movie is just part one (we're gonna have to wait two years for part two ☹️).The world-building is so convincing and believable, and there are no caricatures here. Speaking of which, Skarsgård's portrayal of the Baron is menacingly, mesmerizingly believable unlike the exaggerated portrayal by Kenneth McMillan in Lynch's version (Skarsgård's portrayal and Ferguson's portrayal of Jessica are my favorites of the the film). Can't wait to see more of the Baron in part two.

Everything is so lovingly, carefully crafted here. In some ways, almost too crafted. While there's a feeling of dread that pervades almost the entire movie, there's also a coldness and sterility that underlies much of the film, which is mostly what keeps Dune from being a 10 for me. The coldness/sterility is by no means overwhelming; in fact it's subtle. But I just didn't feel the emotional impact in certain parts that I should've felt. It's not the fault of the actors, who were top-notch, but rather the direction and/or the script. We don't get time to experience whatever it is that bonds some of these characters. **** SPOILER ALERT **** E.g., I know that Paul loves his father and loves Duncan, but when they died, and Paul reacted with great dismay and despair, it just didn't hit me as strongly as it should have.

The other thing that knocked it down (probably just half a point) was that the music started to become grating. By the time Paul and his mother meet the Fremen, I was sick of hearing that same theme -- the woman singing with the abrasive tone -- over and over... played rather loudly. I'm well aware of music being used to shape the drama, but I felt that that theme was overused.

But those are quibbles. Dune is a great story told in a fascinating universe, and Villeneuve has brought to screen the most believable version of the story yet. If part two is at least this good, it'll be well worth the wait.

When it was announced that Denis Villeneuve would direct the sequel to Blade Runner, there was a lot of noise. Noise that I ignored.
Even at the time I said he was too good to let Blade Runner 2049 fail, and regardless of its box office numbers, the truth is that he delivered a great film.

Therefore, when it was also announced that he would direct a new adaptation of Dune, I didn't doubt him at all. In his entire career he has never made me doubt of his work.
And when the images and trailer of what he had done began to circulate, needless to say, I was impressed and my trust was reinforced. But visuals aren't everything, I know that, but I was hoping the book would give him enough guidelines to accomplish something magnificent. It pains me to say it a bit, and it might sound contradictory considering my rating, but I have to be frank, and unfortunately for Villeneuve, the source material worked against him.

Perhaps in his vision and in his initial plans, Villeneuve had more films in mind, especially the second part, and of course also the series planned for HBO Max. But the simple fact of calling it Dune Part One and ending it as it ends, goes without saying that it does affect the film, even if you don't want to believe it. And the reason is basic but too strong. Dune feels like the start of something even vaster, but it also feels like an incomplete journey.
We are barely scratching the surface when we're told that that journey is over.
And I can't deny that Dune is a tremendous epic. A sci-fi epic in every sense of the word.
The scale of this film is just impressive. And I'm talking about all its elements. All of them.
But when you get to the end of this specific story, it undoubtedly feels incomplete.

"The first rule of show business is to always leave them wanting more" And Dune leaves you like that. I was eager for more right there, because the film's never boring.
But ending with a feeling of emptiness, that something was missing, that will never be pleasant.
Especially if the whole thing is hanging by the need of financial success to get the rest of the story. I was going to give it a 7. I gave it the 8 because of the vastness, scope and ambition of its production.

Dune delivers. I grew up in the 80s reading the classics, Heinlein, Asimov, etc. Dune was one of my favorites, but at the time I was too young to process the politics and the humming back story that is hinted at by the characters. The other movies didn't do the book justice, this one did. Unlike a lot of modern movies the characters are likeable. Their situation difficult and their loyalty to each other admirable. This all comes through in this movie in a way that it didn't in the other movies. I'm re-reading the book now since I saw the movie.

The bottom line is, this is a really good sci-fi movie of a really good sci-fi book. I, like others, am glad I knew going in that is is part 1 of 2. Really though, some scenes are drawn out that didn't need to be and I would have preferred a 3 1/2 hour epic movie that didn't need a sequel and frankly I think it would have been better that way.

My complaint that knocks off a star or so: the ship designs and sets. The colors are OK and good to look at but the camera angles don't feel like you're moving. And the ships are just a big block that "hangs in the air much in the way that a brick doesn't". The book doesn't bother describing these things, but the movie should have. Seriously just jump on pinterest and type "starships" and you could find 100 talented artists who make their starships look cool and functional at the same time. The book can be forgiven for not taking this seriously since our imagination can fill these things in, but after Star Wars in 1977 showed that starships can be functional AND look cool, there is no excuse for just making giant blocky starships.

The book isn't very faithfully followed; if you read it you'll see why (some plot points haven't aged well), and its worth a read. A couple of characters are oversimplified and a couple of plot lines abandoned, but hey, when is the last time you read a book? Well now you have a reason since the movie ends half way through.

Anyway, this is a great film. A great sci-fi film. The acting is good to great and the action scenes are great. See it in the theater, it is worth it.

However, I am a huge fan of the director Denis Villeneuve and loved all the films he has made so far. The premise is "Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, only those who can conquer their own fear will survive". So is this another hit by Denis or his first work I don't like?

Let's get the obvious out the way first, Dune (2021) is a visual spectacle! The cinematography by Greig Fraser is wonderful. Every shot in Dune is gorgeous whilst also capturing the beautiful and grand nature of the otherworld planets. The costume and set department also do a wonderful job of really making it seem futuristic. Especial praise to the design of all the spaceships as they are remarkably designed. The CGI is very good as well, thankfully. Hans Zimmer of Interstellar fame does the music score for this film and it is magnificent. He uses to great effect a choir and electrical instruments that elevates every scene in the film. Dune (2021) also features a stellar cast who all do a great job in their respective role even those with little screen time. My biggest praise has got to be for Stellan Skarsgård as the Baron who is just creepy and unsettling every time he is on-screen.

The story is also very intriguing and engaging. There is a political aspect throughout this series that gives a Game of Thrones vibe. There are alliances, secret agendas and backstabbing that keeps you glued to the screen. The movie also focuses a lot on world-building with the noble families, the "voice" power and the Fremen; a group of natives to the desert planet. All of this lore make the world of Dune feel more vibrant and unique similar to that of Lord of the Rings which managed to pull you in; Dune (2021) does the same. Denis does a great job in making all the politics and jargon stated, easy to understand for the audience. There are also a large variety of characters in the film and Denis does a phenomenal job in making it clear what their personality and agendas are. The main character, Paul Atreides played by Timothée Chalamet, has a clear character arc with the struggle of his power and him being next in line for House Atreides. Most of his story arc gets a clear resolution by the end of the film.

However, Dune (2021) is a part 1 that just covers half of the book and it shows. Most movies build up to an epic 3rd act but Dune (2021) just ends midway through the 2nd act. This ends up feeling very jarring, to say the least as it doesn't end on a high note. It is also incredibly slow-paced. Since a majority of the film is dedicated to just exposition and explanation of the world; it results in a lot of moments that feel dull and sometimes boring. Additionally, the fight scenes and action scenes are serviceable but could be improved. Apart from the fight scenes with Duncan (Jason Momoa) the others are choreographed blandly and shot awkwardly as well. Overall, Dune (2021) has a lot of love and effort put towards bringing the grand vision and scope of the novel to the big screen. Every frame in this film is eye-catching thanks to the cinematography, costumes and set design that had a lot of thought put towards it. Nevertheless, it is a very slow paced movie that might deter some people from enjoying it. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed Dune (2021) and it was no doubt one of the most memorable Sci-fi movies to come out. It would be a crime for this to not get a sequel!

I'm not much of a fan of eyebrows guy, and his scenes are as flat as expected. But even Javier Badem has a wooden moment in Dune. Apart from those two irritations, this film is flawless. From a die hard sci-fi fan.

This is a tricky one to review. On one hand it is visualy impresive with great acters and staying true to what Dune is, on the other hand this movie only works if there comes at least one more movie and that starts where this end.

To explain why.
This movie explains the universe and sets the stage, it explains what is going on and hints at what is to come. These things it does well, and if we get at least one more movie this is a 10/10. As a movie that builds into another it is a strong and great movie.
On the other hand that is all it does, it builds up to what is to come, and so if the next movie does not start where this ends, then I am done with this movie version of Dune, because as a stand alone movie it fails.

So short about the rest.
The acting is great, the right persons in the right roles. They all fit and do their jobs really well.
The visuals are amazing, to the point that it often felt like I was watching a work of art rather then a movie.
Dune is not your standard Sci-fi and the movie dares to show that.

Again I must say that the movie is a strange one to review, it in many ways deserve a 10 yet I have to tell others that there is a chance you will hate the movie, it is simply not for everyone. There is also the fact that this does not work as a stand alone movie without another to pick up where this leave things.

This “Dune” offers truly breathtaking visuals. In fact, it’s the best reason currently available for actually heading out to the movies. Films like this that can be best experienced only in a dark room with a huge screen, lightly populated with socially-distanced strangers who have turned off their cell phones (I’m looking at you, Row G).

Villenueve, along with co-writers Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, has created a mesmerizing world for the moviegoer to inhabit. House Atriedes, long-time rulers of Caladan (a world filled with rainy days, fog and lush beauty – think Seattle, but a planet) is ordered by the Emperor to take control of Arrakis (known as “Dune”), a barren wasteland of strategic importance because of the hallucinogenic “spice” harvested there. (Spice is essential to interstellar travel, life extension and a variety of medical uses, all of which make it the most valuable substance in the world.) Turns out, House Harkonnen, previous ruler of the planet, isn’t thrilled to give up this lucrative enterprise. Treachery abounds. The leader of House Atriedes is murdered. The heir, Paul Atriedes, barely escapes, but is abandoned to wander in the desert, just in case the messianic overtones were too subtle.

Although this film runs over 2 ½ hours, it covers only the first half of Frank Herbert’s original novel by the same name. Even at this length, creating a coherent narrative is a major achievement. In contrast, in the 1970s Chilean surrealist Alejandro Jadorowsky created story boards for an epic film version of “Dune” with a running time of over ten hours. Astonishingly, Hollywood wasn’t interested. It would have starred an amazing collection of characters including Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, David Carradine, Herve Villachaize (the diminutive Tattoo on “Fantasy Island”) and Gloria Swanson. The lead would have been Jadorowsky’s twelve-year-old son. (If you’re interested, watch the 2013 documentary “Jadorowsky’s Dune.”)

Villenueve’s script has stripped away the pretentious overtones and general bloviating of Frank Herbert’s novel. The original novel is a piece of work, in every possible sense. Running to more than 550 pages, it was originally serialized in “Analog” magazine before being published by the little-known Chilton Books (a publishing house best known for its car repair manuals). Herbert himself spent time in a socialist commune in Washington state as a child. He was also a distant relative of Joseph McCarthy and admired his relation’s goals if not his methods. To suggest that his views are “eclectic” is to engage in serious understatement.

All this means that Villeneuve had to effectively navigate a dizzying range of topics that include ecology, psychedelic drugs, religion (featuring the Bene Gesserit – think extremely badass space-traveling nuns), authoritarianism and actual human emotion. He succeeds for many reasons. First, rather than spouting philosophy, he focuses on building a big, far-reaching spectacle that literally encompasses a universe. Second, he has an impeccable eye for casting. In this case, he’s selected Timothee Chalamet (“Little Women,” “Call Me By Your Name”) as the messianic son Paul Atriedes, Rebecca Ferguson (“Mission Impossible” series, “The Greatest Showman”) as his Bene Gesserit mother, Oscar Isaac (“Ex Machina,” “The Card Counter”) as leader of the Atriedes clan and a supporting cast that includes Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgard, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and Zendaya. All inhabit their roles perfectly. Finally, Villenueve understands that big ideas can arise and be considered without the need for mind-numbing exposition (that’s right, Mr. Herbert) or tidy resolution.

“Dune” has admirers from a surprisingly broad array of political perspectives, from Stephen Colbert to white supremacists attracted to the idea of a white messiah figure. Since its publication in 1965, Herbert’s weirdly compelling world has offered a welcome respite from the real. It offers a similarly welcome, thought-provoking diversion today.

My main issue with it though is that it is on the slower side and there is an emphasis on set up here but with the knowledge that it’s set up similarly to the Lord of the Rings films then it wasn’t something I took a major issue with. Even if it’s a lot of set up, it’s an engaging and investing set up. Besides a couple of scenes, I was fully engaged with the story and characters throughout. On a pure technical level, this film is masterful. The visual effects are off the charts. All of the ships, locations, and animals feel incredibly realistic and whimsical. The cinematography is fantastic. I prefer the cinematography in Blade Runner 2049 but it was still amazing here. Every shot looks incredible with how it’s lit or the framing. The performances were pretty great. I wouldn’t say this is the best performance from these actors with the exception of Jason Mamoa and Rebecca Ferguson. Both of them do a great job and I’m excited to see what else they can do. Hans Zimmer once again puts out another banger score. This is easily the better between this and No Time To Die but both are still great. The character work definitely helps the set up feel engaging. We don’t get a lot of exposition dumps about our characters but we are shown how they act and it’s great. I wouldn’t put this at the top of a Villeneuve ranking but it’s up there and I can’t wait for the sequel. Definitely check this film out when you can. It’s worth the price of admission. Expand

Maybe he wanted to make a trilogy or maybe even 5 movies but the budget is so big that he felt he had to make two films in order to assure that he could complete the story.

This film is visually and technically astonishing, but like i said before it’s so rushed and everything is happening so fast that you can’t take a minute to actually focus on what’s going on. If you’re not a fan of the Duniverse or have read the books you will definitely be lost. The screenplay and writing is good but for a film based on a book series with so much material the story is kind of lacking.

The film itself truly is a visual wonder, the costumes, art direction, makeup and visual effects are top tier and will definitely be a strong contender for a few Oscars. That being said, I’m really looking forward to seeing this new Dune franchise expanded into more movies and TV shows, with the creative talent behind it, this could rival that of bigger franchises such as Star Wars and other sci-fi properties.

p.s. Timothée Chalamet is extremely overrated

Jessica is so well cast and played though, she might be my favorite character. For a two and a half hour runtime still felt quick on screen. The special effects and design are great, the sound design is good.

I wonder if people that don't know the source material liked it as much, because there is so much there under the surface.

I'm still just worried about Part 2+, specifically Paul's sister, Alia, that's going to be near impossible to do onscreen, and they've set up a very "humanized" version of Dune.

So the film is nice to look at and nice to listen to when the music is playing. But what about the plot itself in the finale? This is where it's just beginning and I'm slowly not sure what I should start with first. I'll be honest. As much as I enjoyed the film and was interested in what was happening on screen, it just had some minor cracks in the finale and a few things I didn't understand. I thought that the fault was on my part and that I simply wasn't giving the film enough attention, and ultimately I still think that now. On the plus side, a couple of friends told me after it was over that they didn't really know what was going on in the story, which is a bit odd after all. I'm not saying the movie is complicated or that it throws too much information at you in too short a time. On the contrary. New Dune is 2 and a half hours long, and it's only the first episode. There's plenty of space, but there are just a few families, a few names, and I just don't know how it happened, but I got lost here and there. After it was over, I spent the following days reading information on the internet and read the plot a few more times and I'm pretty clear. I'm even more sorry that I didn't understand some things during the movie, because the story of the new Dune is great in my opinion, although it's kind of one big intro that prepares you for the next installment. I am, however, looking forward to the next installment, and incredibly so. Both to find out what happens next, but more importantly I hope it will be another excellent cinema experience like this one was. I understand director Denis Villeneuve wanting to throw this film into theaters. While it will also be an experience at home with some better TV on salted audio, it still won't be the same feeling as sitting in a cinema with a proper screen in front of you with proper sound. For me, a great film that I recommend. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. “Dune,” follows suit with many now-established science fiction tropes, although it is to be said that they were inspired/created by the original source material. There is a vast power struggle brewing, a power-hungry villain, and what science fiction/fantasy world would be complete without a Savior. Timothée Chalamet plays Paul Atreides, the son of Duke Atreides, Oscar Issac, and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). On one side, he is being raised as the future of House Atreides; and on the other he is being raised as Lisan al-Gaib, or simply the Messiah. His mother Jessica does this as an acolyte of the “Bene Gesserit,” a female group whose mission is to breed together different bloodlines until they create “The One.”

Now one of the best movies to do this kind of world building and show that there is one person made for this divine purpose and is set to save everybody and defeat evil, and what you think of the entire time, is “Star Wars”. It’s nearly impossibly to see the resemblance and think of while watching this movie. And what Star Wars did well, so does “Dune.” It gives some truly incredible world-building paired with incredible visuals to back it up. Especially when compared to David Lynch’s 1984 attempt, this film does everything better. The story is more compelling the visuals are a tool rather than a distraction.

There are some remarkable moments in the first 30 minutes of the movie that set up what’s to come. We find the first inklings of Paul’s abilities, he dreams of events that will happen (the Sight) and his mother helps him to hone his ability to command others (the Voice). These again start to show the influence this novel had on science fiction, taken right off the page and dropped into “Star Wars.” And we see some truly haunting scenes with Baron Harkonnen (an incredibly transformed Stellan Skarsgård), who is constantly setting the plot into motion: kill off the Atreides to take back Arrakis.

Where some movies might choose to see a bit more of a struggle, the Baron is pretty successful. Just about everybody the movie throws at you that you care about is killed, but not without a fight. Duke Atreides gets poisoned by the house doctor, but is given a cyanide-pill like tooth that expels poison in the area around him. Duncan Idaho (a great friend to Paul, played by Jason Momoa), dies in an incredible fight scene stalling the attacking army so Paul and Jessica can escape. And this all leads to the third act, Paul and Jessica attempting to go further into the desert to get the help of the Fremen led by Stilgar (Javier Bardem) Paul has an intense ritual duel with Jamis where he is doubted to win, but ends up coming on top and taking his first life to survive.

Now let’s talk about all of this. The film opens up with the title “Dune: Part I” and that really already hooks you in. For the next 2 hours and 35 minutes, you know there’s going to be another one, a promise that something as epic as this movie is something that will be continued, and has too much for just one movie. I think where this fails the movie though, is that you know there’s going to be a next one. While we do lose a bit of the characters, we know the story isn’t over at the end. This is where some franchises greatly fail. Where others like “Star Wars” succeed is that it sort of ends as a closed story. The other movies are just in addition, and to build upon the story in better and more intense ways.

Now the ending does leave you wanting more, we see the Fremen and Paul walking further into the desert, even seeing somebody in the distance riding a sandworm, but that’s about it. Nothing is really resolved, and no real satisfaction aside from Paul’s victory. But the second movie hasn’t been made yet. I’m sure tons of planning and pre-production thought has been put into what we will see and how it will be tackled producing the film in even more of a pandemic. But the possibility of a second film will largely depend on the success of this movie. With it being a highly anticipated film with incredible talent drawing audiences, I’m sure it will not be hard. But with it already leaking online, releasing same-day on HBO Max, and further surges of COVID-19, it definitely has an uphill climb to make.

That may sound really negative, but I don’t see it that way. This movie was incredibly engrossing, and has some of the best cinematography (Greig Fraser) this year has offered thus far. The score by Hans Zimmer is addictive and has been playing the entire time this review has been written. And the performances all around left nothing to be desired. Everybody is incredible, whether how much or little screen time they had (cough cough, David Dastmalchian.) It lived up to the hype for me, and whether or not Part II comes, I’m glad to have been able to experience it.

Dune: Part One is an instant classic, and game-changing in terms of cinematography and sound. Mature and slow-paced, yet never boring at all. Villeneuve manages to immerse the viewer in a deep, colossal universe, while avoiding feeling overwhelmed by it.The whole cast is at his best, but Zimmer and Villeneuve are the ones that take the cake. The only reason I don't rate it higher is the lack of bitterness and moral dilemma in the script that characterizes Villeneuve's filmography.

This is great, with amazing effects and acting about as good as you can expect, but having to watch such an overwhelming experience for so long can make this film lose its lustre. Still worth a watch, though perhaps only when it comes out on demand so you can watch it at your own pace. I'd say that this is the price of a faithful adaptation, but I have never read the book so I can't really judge it on those merits. Expand

Incredible set- and costume design. Incredible sound and music. I went to the movies with little expectation and no prior knowledge about the literary work that preceded the film. I think the movie works really well as something that presents a completely new and breathtakingly beautiful and dangerous world. The very scale and immersion is where it really stands out. With heavier focus on art direction and design, rather than cgi, I felt almost nostalgic for a time where blockbuster movies really felt like they wanted you to believe in the rules of a new fantasy. When Denis Villeneuve, one of my favourite contemporary directors, took the reigns of a new adaptation of it, and it finally got released recently, I knew it was time. The sci-fi story, without going into details and spoiler territory, is set in a possible future many 1000s of years from now and is centred around House Atreides, one of several great houses and the son of the duke, as they are tasked by the emperor to take charge of the desert planet Arrakis, where a crucial and rare mineral is extracted, in place of another house. Things don't go as planned when they get there. This is one of those rare occasions where I have read the source material and I was ecstatic to check out this film to see how that world is brought to the screen with the help of modern technology. To no surprise for me knowing Denis' previous filmography, the film is an audiovisual treat. I do hate the fact that I didn't have the luxury to check this out in cinemas, let alone IMAX. Still, watching it at home on my average Home Theater, I was enthralled by how the universe created by Frank Herbert was brought onto the screen in a sublime seamless fashion. Whether it is shots of landscapes, cityscapes, planets, massive futuristic vehicles, the sandworms, indoor spaces, all of it looked wonderful with top-notch CGI. The imagination at display from the source material was awe-inspiring and the love for it was shown in taking the time to let the visuals breathe instead of haphazardly throwing in stuff and rushing to the finish line. The word EPIC does get thrown around a lot but this is one of the few occasions where it aptly fits and then some.

Accompanying the visuals are the top-tier sound effects that can give you an eargasm and a fittingly strong score by Hans Zimmer. Sure, you do get the usual BUWAAAMS but on a whole, I enjoyed the uniqueness/freshness of Zimmer on this one from his norm. Kinda liked how it felt for Interstellar, although not as amazing. There are a lot of characters and the casting for many of them was really good. I loved Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto, he fits that persona so well and I so wish there was more of him. Rebecca Furgeson as Lady Jessica was awesome and had one of the best performances in the film. Stellan Skarsgard as the Baron Harkonnen was a stroke of genius, so imposing and effective with the accompanying visuals. Havier Bardem as Stilgar was friggin amazing and I can't wait to see more of him in Part Two. Timothee Chalamet as the protagonist Paul Atreides was another strong one although when compared to veteran actors, he did stumble here and there but also had some GREAT moments. Plenty of well-casted actors for characters from the book. Unfortunately, even with the 2 and a half hour runtime, characterization was weak. So many characters didn't have enough screentime to be fleshed out properly and some got completely shafted, for example, Piter de Vries. Some story beats also suffered. Still, some of the writing was commendable that even with a lot of material to adapt, most of it went through quite well even if I was wishing they made the movie a full 3 hours long. The omissions made and sacrifices for the dialogue wouldn't have been an issue then. Now, it is not apparent from the promotional material but this is Part One of the experience that roughly covers 55% of the book, so keep that in mind as the film just sorta ends without any satisfying conclusion. I'm so glad that Part Two has been announced, so now we wait for that... it's gonna be excruciating. Overall, despite some issues, I loved it. It's a faithful adaptation from someone who genuinely cared for it. A grand-scale epic serious sci-fi adventure that you don't really get anymore. It's probably the best audiovisual treat I've gotten since Denis Villeneuve's last sci-fi outing i.e Blade Runner 2049 (absolutely love that film). Just goes to show how modern visual effects can be implemented in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. Whether you've read the book or are new to this world, I'd highly recommend checking it out. And if I were to rate it, I'd give it an 8/10.

That being corny, action, sci-fi flick with Patrick Stewart behind it. Then I found that Denis Villeneuve was directing it. Being the Director of such hit Films as Dune inspires with a cinematic flare and style which, while in the same wheel house as Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival I knew I would be in for a treat.

This does an amazing job of creating a distinct style both visually and story wise to make it feel like an entirely separate project from all of Villeneuve's previous works. The story of Dune: part one is exactly as it is in the book, hits a lot of classic sci-fi troupes for better or worse. The real star of this film is the pacing at which the story unfolds. Choosing to skip a lot of the tedious story telling aspects from the previous film Dune portrays the fall of House Atreides as a spectacularly corrupt and horrific affair. While not a perfect telling, Dune definitely a very unique and compelling one about religious fanaticism, betrayal, and prophecy. With all the quiet mystic and world building of his previous films Villeneuve masterfully displays why he is one of the most celebrated directors of a generation! My only real disappointment is that I will have to this on 2 parts.

Another attempt was by David Lynch which was made into a film in 1984, which is said to be a cult movie. Even Lynch was hugely disappointed by the final product. When Villeneuve announced the film, the whole world of film lovers were eagerly waiting. Happily, he did not disappoint us. Part 1 is amazing.

Fortunately, Timothée Chalamet possesses the power to create compelling characters. Otherwise, this might have been more of a slog. It takes place 8,000 years into the future, when planets and rulers are the stuff of grand sci-fi legend. In this case, the young man and his family travel to a desert planet, where inhospitable events and creatures await. Director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) has once again created worlds with grand settings and impressive visuals. (I saw this on the big screen, which is how a spectacle like this deserves to be seen.) This isn’t a typical sci-fi outing: There’s very little real action, but plenty of dialogue, which, even though it’s serious, manages to maintain interest. Even so, it’s stately visuals and intense situations keep it involving.
NOTE: As you can tell from the title, the film ends before the second part of the story unfolds. Due to the success of this one, it’s been slated for production.

For me it couples absolute brilliance and passion for big screen film making with head shaking missteps in story, character and some areas of weightless dialogue and exposition. An absolutely amazing, boundary crushing score, yet abused in its over saturation. I've seen the film 3 times so far. Imax+Amos. Imax+??? and HBOMax. DO NOT SEE THIS ON YOUR TV FOR FIRST TIME. It was absolutely made to be seen, dare I say, ONLY on the big screen, with the best sound system.

I'm a lifelong sci-fi fan (thanks, Dad) in my 6th decade. The Dune books have been read dozens of times. Will a fan's expectations ever be met? Probably not. But this movie is close. I love all of Villeneuve's films and style of revealing a story vs telling one. The efforts and commitment made by him and his production crew is always greatly admired. I think Warner's hesitation to give him the green light for the entire book at once is a gigantic miscalculation and has had an effect on why part 1 feels the way it does. Maybe once after some reflection with lessons learned, part 2 will bring it all together and be the masterpiece I know we all want it to be -- hopefully releasing it sooner than later.

For those not familiar with the story, the family known as House Atreides embarks to the planet Arrakis (aka Dune) in an effort to obtain valuable spice that gives them power. They are soon thrust into a war against the rival House Harkonnen family for control of the planet and the spice. Meanwhile, the Atreides son, Paul (Timothee Chalamet) is called upon to fulfill an unexpected destiny and lead his family and the native Fremen people to victory. Having never read the novel, but having seen the 1984 version made by David Lynch that was a critical and commercial failure, but which I still enjoyed and appreciated for its campiness and fun nonetheles, I had high hopes for an even more faithful and solid take on 'Dune', and while this film certainly delivered, I must admit there were a couple of aspects that left me wanting more, and that couldn't quite exceed my expectations. Going in, I knew the pace would be a little slow, and it most definitely was, as the film takes its time with the exposition and setting things up throughout. However, it left me feeling slightly underwhelmed in spite of the grand scale and scope of the film, which is made up for rather well through the gorgeous cinematography, production design, and always brilliant score by the legendary Hans Zimmer. As for the performances, what an incredible all-star cast we're graced with here! For starters, Chalamet is perfectly cast as Paul Atreides, and while I normally enjoy his performances quite a bit, I never really felt the full potential of his talents here, as he was simply reduced to lots of soft-speaking and whispering, as well as lots of flashback voiceovers. His parents however (played by Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac) are both highly impressive and brilliant here! We get some reliably great tough guy performances from actors such as Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, and Jason Momoa, and Stellan Skarsgard is rather chilling in his villainous Baron Harkonnen role. Zendaya also shows up sporadically throughout the film (albeit mostly in flashbacks.) Like I said, I really felt myself somewhat underwhelmed, unsatisfied, and wanting more by the time the film ended, but this could also do with the fact that this film is only the first half of the story, so hopefully that second part will get greenlit. Overall, it's a beautiful spectacle of a film to behold that does take its time with pacing and story moreso than your average big-budget sci-fi film, but the visuals, themes, and performances are all impressive enough to make this a world worth diving into. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its a good introduction but hardly a full movie. Maybe the first 100 pages of the book are covered. They take control of Dune, the duke is killed, and Paul and his mother flee into the desert and meet the freman. That's it. The movie needed to be longer and include more plot. Great visuals, but overall its disappointing. Expand

I enjoyed watching this for the most part. Most of that enjoyment comes from the actors carying the movie as every single one embodies their respective roles. There are artistic liberties taken of course, but most feel like they enhance the movie similar to the way that the books are by integrating real wold religious practices and deep ideology. One thing I would warn people about going into viewing it is that it should have been called “Dune: Where Everyone Is Almost Whispering And It’s Hard to Hear A Lot Of What Is Said, But It Doesn’t Matter Because You’ll Get The Gist Of It.” All the a-holes telling me that I needed to go see this in the theater can eat an elephant scrotum because it would have driven me crazy to not have subtitles for a lot of this film without the whispering issue. Another issue I have is that in all of the years of promotional material for this movie not once have I seen reference to the subtitle that comes up at the brief title screen as - “DUNE: PART ONE.” Without that information I would have been very upset with how the movie ends. I like the design of the film, but the pacing and the overall flow is just too slow for my taste. As tense as this movie can get the music is a bit much at times. While the overall score is not bad, it stands out in a big way. A few cues made me laugh out loud as they “mickey mouse” hit and were way too much for even the people watching with me. I don’t think that the work was taken too seriously or that it’s one of those films that “insists on its self,” but for now it just has too much to live up to from previous entries. Even some of the visual effects of the ships looked a little weak here and there. It’s unfortunate, but I found myself checking off the things that had and were to happen instead of enjoying what was being presented as I enjoy the above mentioned previous entries. I’ll definitely give this another viewing, technically a third as I watched it twice already, and I’ll look forward to the next installment. I know the books are HEAVY with detail, I just hope that they chose to do more within the scope of the story instead of drawing out the films runtime with a narrative film style relying on slow motion bravado and too much flash forward inane imagery. Fans of the book should give it a watch and Sci-Fi fans in general will get likely enjoy this first entry from Denis Villeneuve. Expand

This one is a little bit bombastic with the blaring music and overwhelming sets. I think the story and the characters get lost in the greater scope of the world-building. I was expecting to be wowed, but instead I was mildly satisfied. Expand

Artistic visual wonder.
Maybe poorly written if you haven't read the books and what not. Parallels Star Wars a bit, because SW was inspired by the original Dune books/films.

Before watching this movie i expected it to be slow paced, patient and visually stunning movie coming from Denis Villeneuve and mostly i was right and it it a good movie but did it live up to the hype for me...no

The first half of this movie was a slow burn, took its time with the story-telling, character introductions and mainly focused on world building complimented with amazing visual shots from Denis Villeneuve and although i enjoyed some aspects of the world building, great visual effects and scenery and the mystery of the story and Paul Atreides' involvement in it, the first half of Dune was mostly uninteresting to me especially with mostly average characters(more on that later).

The second half however picks up with the pace and delivers the sci-fi epic that i wanted with good action, amazing set pieces and i know i've said it before and i'm gonna say it again THIS MOVIE WAS VISUALLY AMAZING and directed well but most importantly the story and pacing started to gel together well too along with the mystery aspect of the movie kept me kinda hooked but still had problems with paper thin character arcs and the when the movie is getting really interesting it ends abruptly.

Now on the characters, besides Timothée Chalamet's character Paul Atreides who is the protagonist of the movie, i didn't feel an emotional connection with most of the characters most of them didn't have interesting arcs if any at all and it's not because of the acting, i mean look at the cast of this movie it's impressive and there wasn't any poor acting performance in sight all the actors gave their all in their roles but that can only carry you so far if i didn't care for the characters.

The most interesting characters were Duke Leto Atreides, Lady Jessica Atreides and Duncan Idaho(Jason Mamoa was the only one who looked like he was having fun in the movie and was badass too) and was the second best character of the movie.Zendaya wasn't really in this movie as i thought she would be even though it's implied heavily she is integral to the story but that payoff doesn't really happen. The villains were your typical bad guy villain with average motivations although Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen was creepy.

For the protagonist Timothée Chalamet gives a good performance as usual. Paul Atreides' story and journey was your typical hero journey although it's uniquely told as his arc is full of mystery as doesn't really get resolved by the end of the movie but i liked the dynamic between him and his parents especially the beginning with his father which was a cool moment. So with Dune being a slow burn, patient movie and average characters it relies heavy on the plot and story-telling for it to be a success and for me personally i feel it wasn't enough to make up for the flaws i had with Dune like the heavy slow paced and kinda boring first half, not feeling invested with most of the characters and some of the world around Dune feeling mostly empty for a sci-fi but i did enjoy the second half more, the action was well directed, the acting performances were really good and the movie is a visual joy to experience thanks to Denis Villeneuve's directing complimented with good cinematography and some aspects of the score(kinda annoyed me at times but it was mostly good).

I think it's a good movie but it's just not for me at the end of the day. I respect the unique take it has especially with the movie being released in Hollywood nowadays so i think this movie is necessary but personally might not watch it again.

I enjoyed the science fiction opera and having read the books several times feel it "mostly" represented them faithfully. I was not convinced with the proper portrayal of Paul or Jessica, feeling they both didn't hit an accurate representation of their characters. Is it better than the previous movie version? In parts. However, with it only being part of the story final judgment is reserved for a complete telling. Expand

Quite well indeed, but this adaptation does not go as far story wise as the other two adaptations. Without at least a second movie this would feel so incomplete to leave this Dune hanging in this position. For the first time in a long time I thought/felt I was watching art unfolding on screen again. Superheroes movies have gone the way of the westerns/war movies. Maybe time to bring some classy sci-fi back again like Dune? Yup needs a sequel for sure. Expand
