The soundI have liked most of the versions of DUNE but this version was the FIRST one that made me feel like I was on a truly alien world. The cinematography is superb. The script was excellent, telling a complete story without narration. The sound quality was mesmerizing, it made me feel the stinging, windswept sand grains. And the acting was spot on. Stellan Skarsgard is imposing as Baron Harkonnen and he eats up the screen time he has. Can't wait to see more of him in Chapter Two! All the other parts - Duke Leto, Duncan Idaho, Paul, Lady Jessica, Stilgar.. nearly everyone was perfect in their role. I don't do this often but this movie is a 10 for me. You can watch it, feel it, taste it. You get the sensation you are there, among the characters in this harsh, quasi-medieval, space-faring universe of political intrigue. What a rush! Expand

My rating is relative to other science fiction films. If you do not enjoy science fiction, you will probably not particularly care for Dune. I almost never rate a film as high as 9 - but, I can't think of any other science fiction film I would consider better. I kept watching for weaknesses - but, every aspect of the film is excellent - even areas such as props, costumes, makeup, etc... everything is excellent in my opinion.

Casting is superb, acting is beyond excellent... as is directing, editing (sound and video), etc.

The story comes from the 1965 Frank Herbert novel which is universally appreciated as excellent science fiction. The screen play adaptation follows the original novel fairly closely and is excellent in my opinion.

I was not particularly that interested in seeing another film adaptation of the Dune novel... but, I could not stop watching this excellent 2 1/2 hour movie.

I know the Dune story - I read the novel several decades ago. I knew the first half of the 2 movies would be primarily backstory. I expect I will enjoy "Part Two" even more than "Part One".

A well done adaptation which lacks several significant scenes and lore bits to be perfect. It at least shows the team behind it actually understood the key structural and ideological bits behind Dune.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Denis Villeneuve tried to simplify the story and complex universe of the Dune books. I can understand his decision. It is almost impossible to put on screen in two hours in all its complexity, the world created by Frank Herbert. He completely gave up certain characters, such as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, and chose not to introduce others directly, Emperor Padisah Shadam IV. I suspect that he keeps them for the second part, if there will be another second part, because it is impossible to take the narrative line to the end without them. It is possible that it will be a paractic, financial decision because this would have involved hiring two more important actors to appear in only two scenes. Possible.
I liked it because it managed to capture the atmosphere of the books. The costumes and visuals are gorgeous.
I didn't like that he didn't even briefly explain, through dialogue, fundamental notions for the Dune universe such as the Guild, the shield, the Butlerian Jihad, the total lack of computers in the universe, the orange Catholic Bible
That's all...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. By in large, amazing. Fantastic visuals and audio. Characters were likeable, just wish we had more time with some of them. Didn't find it slow at all. Wish part 2 were ready to go. I'm pleased they took time to clearly telegraph dark things to come in terms of Paul's role as a "savior" -- they go out of their way to emphasize the Missionaria Protectiva installing and exploiting myths.
Nits to pick: the relationship between spice and space travel could have been clearer. Yueh and Hawatt could have benefitted from more characterization.

The world building is on a whole other level. Timothy Chalamet's performance was great, for me Oscar Isaac and Stellan where the two standouts out of this stacked cast. I know in the book Paul is supposed to have a kind of father son relationship with Gurney, but I ended up preferring Denis choice of establishing a brotherly bond between Duncan and Paul. The CGI in this movie was so clean and crisp the shadows from every ship, the way the water was running through the military cruiser coming out of the bay and of course the design of the Shai hulud, just incredible. But I don't think I expected what we got. There is an emotional intensity and just, humanity, to this version that I've never seen in Dune before. It's not even really there in the book.

I first read Dune as a child, and again when I was a bit older. I've read the second and third books twice as well. I've started the fourth twice, and left off of it twice, it failing to hold my interest, but that is a discussion for another time.

I love the 1984 David Lynch film. Some people do, others don't. It's very much a product of its time: a flashy spectacle with a flair for costume design and an excellent soundtrack. My memories of the later Sci-Fi channel miniseries are faint, but I can say it never captured my imagination the way the first film and the Westwood strategy games did. To say nothing of my imaginings of the lost 70s-era Jodorowsky adaptation.

A friend asked me if Dune: Part One made up for the Jodorowsky version never coming out. I told him I didn't think I was qualified to say. But this film brought the story of Paul Atreides to vivid, surreal life in a way I never anticipated.

The brilliant cast, excellent mechanical design, and soundtrack with incredible presence and intensity come together almost flawlessly. As a simple filmgoer, I cannot reasonably say how this film might have been improved further.

I appreciate the small details as well, like styling Chalemet's hair to resemble Kyle MacLachlan's in the '84 film.

Every so often a production with the budget of Dune: Part One turns out to be very good, and I reminded that filmmaking as a medium has not quite yet been subsumed by moneygrubbing hacks in suits who bow, scrape and grovel at the altar of Mickey Mouse.

I learned only just prior to its release that this flm was to be part one of a series, and went into production with full knowledge that it might not get a continuation. I can only hope its quality and success means that it will.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dune is excellent. The story simplify the book and make it clearer for the movie. Yes, it doesn't loose time on the navigator stuff, but DV did use the Witches clan in this story. Which, I think, clarifies a lot of things regarding Paul, his mother and the political factions. There are great epic scenes in this movie. The main battle is great but doesn't turned into a CGI fest. The sand worm are really done well. The way they present Paul visions is intriguing for the watcher. The music of Hanz is superb and the sounds effect in theatres are a blast to listen to. I though there were some colorized scenes that had some poor choice of settings. I give it 88%. A superior Dune adaptation and better rythm then Blade Runner 2049, don't miss out on it. This is way easier then reading the books but could serve has a great introduction. Expand

A fantastic experience with stunning visuals, magnificent set pieces, and production designs, and a powerful Hans Zimmer score“Dune” is an intense and fascinating science-fiction film that has the potential to be the best film of the year? A fantastic experience with stunning visuals, magnificent set pieces, and production designs, and a powerful Hans Zimmer score that transforms throughout the film and serves as an important character in its own right. With a run time of 2 hours 35 minutes, Villeneuve's film is highly entertaining and rarely time-consuming. With stunning visuals that aid in explaining the complex world and diplomacy of "Dune" and the planet Arrakis, which isn't a problem because "Dune" is so distinct and contains so many dynamic scenes that newcomers like myself will be returning for more viewings.
This is one of the year's best book adaptations because everything is presented in a coherent and beautiful manner, and everything is neatly recapped, which will please fans of the book series. Additionally, there is no question that, without a doubt, the entire ensemble cast does as well by the script by selling the audience on the “feudal interstellar society in which various noble dynasties control planetary fiefs,”
Is "Dune" a film that reminds us of what a Hollywood blockbuster can be? A gripping tale that is both action-packed and thought-provoking. Villeneuve's "Dune" is another masterpiece, and as science fiction enthusiasts, we should all be overjoyed that he will continue with Part 2. As good as "Arrival" and "Blade Runner 2049" are, this film has a true sense of profundity that distinguishes it as a genuine sci-fi magnum opus

Where Lynch made us sit through wordy internal monologues, so much of what we learn about Dune's universe from Villeneuve comes from context and natural character interactions. Given the inherent difficulties of setting up a new universe and some recent films' choice to almost completely forgo exposition to focus on set-pieces and characters (I'm not not pointing my finger at you, Force Awakens), such a deft return to world-building feels incredibly engaging. The religion and tribal culture of the Fremen, the esoteric order of super-powered nuns, political strife between great houses a la feudal Europe; it's all there and it's largely fascinating without being overwhelming. It's an audacious and unabashed appeal to the nerdiest among us that deserves praise in its own right. Villeneuve doesn't forget to bring the action however and the set pieces we do get - especially one particularly massive sequence between thousands of soldiers and ships - excel as well. Villeneuve seems to distrust CG effects just the right amount, knowing when to pull back or keep renderings just out of focus. The largest battle also takes place at night, allowing fireballs to stand out in awesome contrast. The result is effects that feel grounded and consistently believable. Outside of battles as well, the movie is a delight to behold. Every piece of sci-fi tech is thought out in the nerdiest but also most elegant of ways. Energy shields for example are depicted in a manner that visually communicate the logic upon which they function without said logic ever having to be explained by a character. Spaceships and weapons are also largely aesthetically distinct from what you might find in obvious points of comparison like Star Wars or Star Trek. Here, for instance, space ships can take a much more organic form, with the ships we see in much of the latter half resembling dragonflies. Costume and architecture are perhaps even more impressive; opting for a stunning, ancient look with even great levels of attention being paid to the tiniest of objects e.g. the design of a certain, highly-unpleasant box which makes an appearance early on.

The high-stakes world Villeneuve sets up provides context for some wonderfully tense performances from Chalamet and Ferguson. As Paul, Chalamet is at times over-confident and naïve but thankfully never insolent. His relationship with his mother is fraught from the first scene yet neither character is willing to endanger the bond they both rely upon to survive throughout the movie. Ferguson also does a wonderful job depicting Lady Jessica's conflict between duty to her order and House, and her desire to protect her son. Rampling and Skarsgard are two other standouts, conveying incredible amounts of menace not with words but a glance or well-chosen tone. Giant sandworms be damned, a dirty look from Charlotte Rampling may be the most intimidating thing in Dune.

All of these strengths mean the film's two and a half hours pass very quickly. Despite that run time, however, the credits do run exactly when we feel the central conflict is finally set up. This is a part one after all, and no one should go into Dune expecting any sort of resolution. While this approach is bound to frustrate more than a few people, it's much preferable to an alternative where the entire story was jammed into a single film. Villeneuve's choice to give his Dune space to breath should be viewed as a wise one; offering up not only complete context for the coming conflict teased throughout the film, but also affording the opportunity to appreciate the intricacies of Frank Herbert's world-building. It's hard not to hope that this more patient approach to blockbusters will attract a sizeable audience and prove this kind of sci-fi can succeed. For now though, Dune deserves celebration as a singular accomplishment regardless of its commercial success. Here's to more nerdiness on the big screen.

A great movie with mystical vibes and giving a much needed fresh look into a vision that many magnificent creatoes have provided us in the past. Having been a great fan of the original vision by Judorowski, as well as adoring the Lynch classic, I saw this with half my expectations but boy was I wrong. I rewatched it numerous times and am counting down for part 2 and -finally- part 3. Can't wait to see the end. Never thought we would. Expand

Why do we have professional critics anymore? They gave The Last Jedi a higher score than Dune. Critics reviews diverge significantly than actual viewer reviews. I’m surprised their opinions are even considered anymore.

I've never read the book but I'll say this might be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. It's visually beautiful to look at, the effects looks fantastic(except in few areas), the plot is slow but easy to forward, and HANS ZIMMER with that score. My only issue is that it's only part one. The story of Dune is bit complex to put on big screen and Denis Villeneuve managed it perfect, but I'll be honest, I wish they can bring back Intermissions to make it a longer movie. I guess what I'm saying is that I want more of it and can't wait for part 2. Expand

This spiceDune takes place in the year 10k in the future, a lot is going on now but there is this desert planet called Arrakis which has an incredibly valuable (the thing most valuable in the universe actually) element simply called Spice. This spice thing is mined by “The Empire '' by some proxy civilization led by House Harkonnen but apparently, they are changing the exploiters to House Atreides (Timothee’s house), so the Harkonnen aren’t that happy but they have to comply. On top of that, Arrakis is inhabited by the Fremen, an advanced civilization that has been involved in this mining war but they just want to leave them and their planet alone.

On the surface level, Dune 2021 is about anticapitalism and anti-imperialism with some hero’s journey stuff going on, but there is much more to it… well at least if you’re looking for more. At first, I was somewhat skeptical, since the trailers featured a bunch of superstars and have this Marvel superhero movie which I’m sick of, but since the movie started and the plot progressed I was slowly but hooked to its premise. It does have certain things that will resonate as superhero-ish to be more palatable for a bigger audience, after all, this is a commercial movie that cost hundreds of millions of dollars, so it was kind of expected, but still, I was pleasantly surprised by how the movie has a lot of concepts and it has this “author” seal that almost tastes like high-art cinema.

Visually, Dune is stunning, a lot of work has been put into every scene, you can see many symbols and motifs here and there that will mean something to everyone. It features some huge spaceships and huge landscapes among other things that are heavily enhanced by an IMAX screen which I strongly recommend watching that way if possible. Given the scale in many scenes I almost feel that I could be there, Dune is truly mesmerizing. Every civilization feels like a different culture, with its rituals and values, what's most brilliant is that this aspect is always told with image and cinematography and rarely with expository dialogue, so you can make your interpretations about them.

Aside from many of the supporting cast actors I didn’t know what to expect from Timothee or Zendaya, I can’t say much of Zendaya still, but Timothee was really good, in some scenes, he showed that he can achieve a lot of range and he did an amazing job as the protagonist, the same can be said for any other character but he is one of the best parts of the film.

For how good and enjoyable the movie is, it isn’t a perfect movie and it has some flaws, they’re not that bad, but they are worth mentioning. Starting with its runtime, after having the first and biggest climax the plot slows down a little and by entering the final act you will certainly feel somewhat tired, maybe cutting out some of the most expository parts of the first half would make the runtime less hard to be, still, I couldn’t have it differently than it is, so who knows?. Also, the main plot features some aspects that could be a little problematic in our social environment by today's standards, for instance, it has the recurrent story of the white man freeing an oppressed civilization, it certainly has been adapted to our current standards but still, let's see how this unfolds in the second or third movie. It has other problems but they are so minimal that maybe I will just be nitpicking.

I was surprised by how Dune was executed to the point that it is simply one of the most beautiful films that I have ever seen, it also showed me how it inspired a lot of other pieces of media, most notoriously Star Wars, I haven’t seen how much Dune has to offer yet, but I’m looking forward what will come next and receive it with open arms.

For some of the downsides, the story can be somewhat dragged out and there are several long-winded segments that can make the film seem like it needs to pick up pace.

Summary: Go watch it. It's gud. Ok, now the in-depth one - I didn't know Dune. I never did. Never watched the first movie, never read the book. Before the movie came out, I did a tiny bit of research and found out that George Lucas stole about 60% of Dunes ideas and made Star Wars out of it. Just by the way, imitation/envy is the greatest compliment. Alright, so, the movie is beautiful. The sound is extraordinary (if you have a decent setup). The story is nice, even though it lacks in some regards - one rogue doc can sabotage an entire base? Shield generator? Communication? You serious? Isn't there supposed to be, I don't know, a whole host of soldiers guardians these key stations - ESPECIALLY right after they took over and were expecting sabotage/resistance?

This just seems like an off point in the story. Especially since no ship was in orbit, "all" soldiers were... sleeping? Wao, that's convenient. Too convenient. That's the kind of storytelling I don't like. Other than that particular "scene", the story is decent, the characters are well-made, I like the "hints" or little "indications" of something greater approaching. This feels like one part of a greater franchise and I love it. I never - not even once - felt bored. Every scene has a meaning, every scene manages to create one more portion of the world. The only thing I would criticize are the designs of the ships - especially spaceships - they are dull and grey as heck; and not even in a necessarily functional way. In that sense George Lucas did it much better - he made cool Spaceships you wanted to have as a child to play with, Dune here has a few square chunks of concrete that you don't want to have as a model. Oh, did I mention that the visuals and the sound are stunning? Damn, if you have a decent OLED and an Atmos setup, go watch it. Now. Because!

When I heard DennisAfter the disappointment that was the 1984 film and the monstrosity that was the SyFy channels miniseries, I prayed to whatever god that would listen for someone to come again and give this franchise justice in film. When I heard Dennis Villeneuve was selected to direct a new movie, I believed my prayer might have been heard. When I actually saw the movie, I knew it was.

This new Dune movie is everything I believed the franchise could be as a motion picture. Villaneuve delivered, as I knew he would, with larger-than-life structures, the expansive wastes of Arrakis, the color and pageantry of the people, and the epic sense of a larger struggle at hand. Such influences were evident from his previous works like Arrival and Rlade Runner 2049, but he perfected them in this movie. The movie was also a good adaptation and covered nearly all the main and important parts from the book, while leaving itself some leeway to format the story to the pacing and style of a motion picture (something the 1984 film failed to do). If there were any flaws, it was in the performance of some of the characters and the somewhat lacking explanations of things for those who would not be familiar with the source material. The actor selected to play Paul could not have been more uninteresting, and I could not always tell if his reactions at times were very appropriate to the situation. This was not the case for most of the cast surrounding him, and I was definitely taken in by many of the performances from the star-studded cast (although as good an actor as he is, seeing a nicely shaved Jason Momoa will always be a hardship to endure in the future). Of course this is only part one to this project. I feel it is important to withhold complete judgement until the next installment can be compared, but for what we have, it is an excellent beginning. Needless to say, I can't wait for part two.

It's one part Star Wars, one part Game of Thrones, yet it succeeds here in not feeling derivative of either. There's enough intrigue to keep you guessing, and enough spectacle to keep you watching.

The art direction and narrative are both great at conveying the unique setting and world of the series without relying overtly on exposition. The world is conveyed well through form and function, allowing the world of the film to feel natural, as it does in the books. It is sometimes difficult to see that the film is setting up for a sequel, however that's simply a necessity here given that this film is based upon a book, which itself is part of a series. Splitting the film, while sometimes an unpopular choice, is entirely necessary if you're going to attempt to display the full scope of Herbert's world.

The film is well cast, and well directed. The art design and CGI really nail the unique nature of Dune's world, one of Neo-Feudalism, mixing this space age civilisation with a medieval twist. While it ends with a lot left to give, it holds the promise of a bright future for this series that makes this film more than worth the watch and great first entry into (hopefully) a great series.

And the effect is, that one could say, that the movie is exactly like the book, but without all those inner thoughts. So, to fully appreciate the movie, it is strongly advised to read, or rather immerse oneself in the book beforehand. The movie does feel like it skims through a synopsis of the book, and despite being very slow paced, actually feels rushed, as some parts form the book were changed, shortened or deleted. However, the visuals, sticking close the original material and general from-a-fan-for-fans feel makes me not able to hate the movie. I hope part 2 will be at least as good, and that Denis will get the chance to film other parts, at least the first main sotryline (Dune-Messiah-Children). Expand

But honestly I might have enjoyed this movie more. It's hard to say since this Dune is literally only Part 1 and whether a Part 2 will even be made is kind of relying on how well this movie preforms at the box office. So yes incomplete, but what's there in the 2 1/2 hours is fantastic gritty sci-fi eye candy. It's important to note that the Dune universe is very lore heavy and had I not been familiar with it by proxy of seeing David Lync's 1984 adaptation, I might have not enjoyed it as much as I did. That's not to say they didn't do a good job of explaining the key details about the universe however, seeing as how it is a bit slower than some people might expect I just think it will help many viewers get more invested into the film with a little background knowledge before hand. If Part 2 is ever made, and done to the same quality as Part 1, then I'd have no problem calling the complete package a 10/10. Expand

I had trouble understanding what people were saying a lot though, otherwise I'd give it a 10.

An all-time great, overshadowed by the currently yet to be greenlit sequel, without which "Dune: Part 1" has no real reason to exist. Fantastic movie nonetheless, every shot is beautiful and the score ties it together perfectly.

Denis was true to his word, and delivered a great story with a nicely balanced mix of action and character development. There were a few scenes from the book I wish had been included, but obviously the 1/2-book was already a 3-hour movie. The only concerns I have are whether those lost souls who have NOT read the books will fully understand elements of the story. That was always the danger of trying to turn Frank Herbert's Dune into a movie ... how to capture the universe he built into a movie. But the grand scope, stunning visuals, and great performances all-around earned this movie another watch in a few days -- this time on IMAX! Expand

IT exceeded all my expectations and more. If you're expecting some big war or a big fight like comic movies, this is not for you. This about the journey and the awe of the universe containing it. Every character has a reason and feels fleshed out. The plot is really easy to follow ( I haven't read the books or watch the old film) but it never holds your hand or treats you like you're dumb and need everything to be explained through some cheesy dialogue. IT SHOWS. It open your senses with marvelous visuals and sound, and let the story go through. So please watch it in cinemas, it deserves it.
I wish the combat scenes were a bit more visceral but I can see why villenueve was a bit cautious in this subject, and it feels justified.

I'm crossing my fingers that in the world we live today a movie like this can thrive and we get to see the second part.

I wonder what it is they would actually do differently? It is a masterful interpretation of a famously difficult source, shot exquisitely, acted wonderfully and, most importantly, is hugely entertaining from the first frame. I thoroughly enjoyed it and haven't been this excited for a sequel since the fellowship of the ring. Thank you Monsieur Villeneuve, Dune has finally been done justice. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful film... Hard to believe that only part 1 was filmed. This make does not slavishly adhere to the books (like some of the prior versions), narrowly focusing on the Atreides/Harkonnen, but I wonder how certain of the omissions will resolve themselves in part 2 (the guild and corrinos, in particular). This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dune will probably go down in history as one of the Epics that the world needs. It’s necessary for a movie to have the one moment that you say “Wow I would watch that again”, this movie lacks that. You feel the repeat that there actions get boring in the middle of the movie. A clever set up for the 2 next installments. It feels like the weaker one of the soon to be trilogy. I would be excited for these next movies because it will be a more action filled movie. Expand

For those of you saying that the plot moves along too slowly or that pacing is an issue, don't worry, Michael Bay is still making movies that you can enjoy.

For those who love having layers of mood and emotional intensity build, and appreciate the feeling of being immersed in a classic sci-fi story, then this version of Dune absolutely nails it. What a great film. The movie is long, but the time flew by and I am excited for the next installment.

The acting performances were mostly beyond reproach, the cinematography was exemplary, and the sound and visual effects submerge you in this wondrous world and make it impactful and fulfilling to experience.

Bottom line: The movie isn't perfect, but it is a great example of what compelling story-telling and world-building are possible with a big budget is brought to bear. If you expected Guardians of Galaxy, sure, you'll be disappointed. This isn't that. If you want to raise your sights and experience a sci-fi story with more depth and feeling, then you can't lose with Dune.

The novel was not meant to be split into two parts, so this "break" is unfortunate but necessary. The cast was well-chosen and the directing does credit to the source material without overwhelming the viewer with back story, as brilliant as it is. I feel confident that watching parts 1 and 2 together will depict the epic glory of this classic tale as it was meant to be experienced. Expand

It's fantastic to see a new high concept Sci-Fi movie hit the big screen, it's been too long since we have seen something so epic and thought provoking as this. The visuals and actors are incredible with loads of atmospheric scenes and a mesmerising soundtrack. Villeneuve has made an incredible Dune movie here with an obvious love for much of the source material by Frank Herbert. My only problem with the movie is that I think it needed more of the runtime devoted to universe building and subtle exposition from characters. I understand Denis respects the audiences intelligence to work out what is happening, I don't expect the movie to explain everything to me but I think there wasn't enough about the lore and the politics of the galaxy in the year 10191. This new Dune is much better than David Lynch's Dune in many ways but I think Lynch's version fleshed out the Dune universe better. In the entire runtime of Dune 2021 there was no mention of the spacing guild, navigators, travelling without moving, mentats, why no computers and no insight into the larger universe at play. The most disappointing omission for me was the lack of the Emperor of the Known Universe, he is hugely important to the plot but you never see him back on planet Caitain you just hear his dignitaries say his name and title on planet Caladan. Denis Villeneuve's Dune is the new definitive Dune movie and will be even more definitive when part two is out but I think it could have been even better. A few more discussions between characters and more meetings around the table like in the book would have been very welcome. Herbert wanted to entertain his readers but also clearly wanted to teach the reader about the universe he had created but Villeneuve is obviously a director who cares more about character and spectacle which is fine by me as it's still an awesome movie to behold. Almost perfect. Expand

----------------------------------------------------------

Beautiful film in all, to be seen absolutely, directed by Villeneuve director remember of masterpiece films such as Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners, Arrival. The cast is really excellent, spot on everything, excellent direction, does not take your eyes off the screen for a single moment, not tired and not boring (indeed passionate and a lot) as the first DUNE was. The film that reflects throughout the novel, we hope that there are other sequels since it is not finished and is for now the first, I think of at least a trilogy. I recommend to all fans of science fiction and not, to see it as it is not disappointed but rather dazzled by its beauty.
