Many are critical about the impact that this movie may have on younger kids, but I do question whether these children would be negatively affected by issues and terms that are not appearing relevant to them specifically in the context of the cosmetic child applicable backdrops.

I think this movie is particularly relevant for teens discovering themselves and considering the way society impacts on their emotions, on adults who are still struggling with the challenges of patriarchy and matriarchy in society, and the older generations who are set in their ways and could take more time to consider how things are impacting younger generations.

I think it’s this in-between space of feeling both fulfilled and not fulfilled by viewing it that makes interesting conversation and makes it art.

Bottom line: The film both said a lot and didn’t. It’s surface level but also raising some uncomfortable questions. Oh and it’s sparkly, it can be entertaining and vibrant, and funny too. Loved the Ken dancing scene! Made me want to give ken “more love”, specifically, like the space to be “ken”. Is this maybe a reflection of white corporate feminism and it’s limitations?

Barbie's existential crisis was funny and enlightening. It went beyond social commentary on gender to explore themes like death and what a gift it is to experience the whole gamut of human existence vs a predetermined perfect trajectory. I never played with Barbie so I wasn't sure if this movie was going to do anything for me but I found it a fun celebration of femininity. Those who are saying that this movie is against men, it's not - the point is that when things are out of balance, when people are not allowed to achieve their own potential then society itself loses out. This imbalance occurred in Barbieland, a fictitious place run by women, and "the real world" primarily run by men. No one is saying the Barbies in Barbieland were bad because they allowed that to happen. Similarly no one is blaming men in the "real world." It's a natural outcome of the imbalance of power and opportunity. Expand

You could tell who was going to watch Barbie based on what they were wearing. Inside the screen, it felt comfortable and our audience was laughing together.

The movie itself takes a whimsical approach to deconstructing patriarchal issues and idealising a world run by women. It was only at one point towards the resolve of the movie that this narrative was lost on me, but it picked right back up afterwards.

I would 100% watch again. It was Kenough for me.

Going into the movie I kind of already knew what would happen since I had seen some reviews with spoilers beforehand (no worries, this review will have no spoilers) but I wanted to watch it myself before making a clear judgement. I had high hopes for the movie and it didn’t fail to deliver. The set design, costume design and music production for the movie was spectacular, and it made the dance numbers throughout the movie very enjoyable. Barbie was very funny and relatable, her character development was very well done and you could really sympathize with her struggles. Ken was also very funny and brought the most laughs out of me during the film, though he did also have some very well done character development. The other main characters such as the other Barbies, the mother and the daughter, and even Allan were a delight to see on screen, their performances were exceptionally well done. If you’ve ever played with Barbies during your childhood or if you just want to enjoy a well made and well produced movie, I highly recommend you watch this one. And if you’re on the fence about watching it, I say you should go for it, it’s a fun and entertaining experience and I think everyone should have the opportunity to see such a good movie. Expand

In Barbieland women live the perfect life and can be anything they want to be, but when she finds herself in the real-world, Barbie soon learns that things are very different.

The plot doesn’t really make a lot of sense, but the movie happily leans into the absurdity and both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling manage to completely sell the emotional beats. It’s two hours of good fun and those complaining about it’s ‘message’ need to stop being so thin skinned.

Why should we measure our standards on what is right or what is beatiful or what is not based on the amount of followers or "likes" certain people have... dress however you feel you should dress, be however you feel like you should be, stop reaching out for external validation, and start thinking of what things you do make you happy.
Highly recommend for you to watch it (if you are open minded) if you think society is good as it is and that boys should all be muscular and thin and girls toned and thin, then this movie is not for you, and I do not judge you, if you are happy living under those standards then by all means, live by them. This movie is about doing whatever that makes us feel good without taking into consideration what would anyone else says about it.

I was expecting more from Gerwig in exploring identity, autonomy, and the journey inward, instead of the constant meaningless patriarchy babble and the simple “life is terrible”, oh no wait, “it’s great” ponderings. The only part of the themes and exploration that landed very well was the insight into few positive but mostly negative impact of Barbie toys on women and especially young girls. Wonderfully and ecstatically formed. It was designed to be the Barbiest Barbie film that ever Barbied. Gosling and Robbie are fantastic. The real world stuff was a bit dull and saccharine and you could cut out all of the Mattel boardroom stuff as it simply wasn’t funny or smart, and added very little. But the Barbie world sequences were thrilling and joyous. Which is what a Barbie film should be. Gerwig has created a fully realised, interesting world with a unique vision and voice. Expand

Welcome back, Streamers! The most anticipated movie weekend of 2023 is here. It's Barbenheimer. If you haven't followed it, there's this ridiculous internet debate over which film will reign supreme between Greta Gerwig's Barbie andWelcome back, Streamers! The most anticipated movie weekend of 2023 is here. It's Barbenheimer. If you haven't followed it, there's this ridiculous internet debate over which film will reign supreme between Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer...

In this corner, coming in at 11.5 inches, it's the iconic, blonde fashion doll, Barbie.

Barbie is the first live-action film about the American icon and her place in culture. Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach wrote a screenplay, which Gerwig directs, that takes audiences into Barbieland, where we meet stereotypical Barbie (Marot Robbie) and her fellow Barbies living their perfect existences until one day stereotypical Barbie starts to think constantly about death, her feet become flat and other things are off. Barbie has to make a trek to the real world to find out why things have changed for her and to set them straight. Barbie is accompanied by Ken (Ryan Gosling), whose existence is so dependent upon Barbie that he only has a good day if Barbie looks at him. Rollerblading, hot pink singing and dancing hijinks ensue.

Overall, Barbie is a weird and wonderful movie. It is clear that a lot of thought and money went into creating this story and world inhabited by Barbie. You will be awed by the clever production design and the intense attention to detail that went into constructing Barbieland. The colors pop. There are cute animated touches throughout. Additionally, the costume design enhances each Barbie and Ken in interesting ways. You'll also notice the music throughout the film is sometimes poignant and sometimes hilarious, especially when it involves the Kens. From top to bottom, the crafts in this movie are top notch and worthy of a trip to the big screen.

The cast, especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, are excellent. Robbie brings sensitivity and heart to Barbie. She's thoughtful and kind while also being naive and troubled by her own existence. It is a tricky performance to pull off and Robbie is great. Ken is an iconic performance for Gosling. He pulls out all of the stops to bring Ken to life. I can't imagine another actor being as successful in this role. Gosling is a really gifted comedic actor as evidenced by this performance. I'll also note that Kate McKinnon, American Ferrar, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera and Issa Rae each have good moments as well. It's a big cast, but some of the smaller roles do get chances to shine.

The main issue is that the messaging is so heavy-handed. There is a lot to unpack about Barbie's place in society. What does she represent to women and girls? What does she represent to men? There are themes of feminism, patriarchy, and corporate greed. The film does its best to address its issues in a clever and subversive way, but it veers into becoming patronizing at times rather than funny and satirical. The performances of the actors really carry the film across the finish line despite how it handles its themes.

Ultimately, Barbie is a movie worthy of a trip to the theater. It is funny and even clever at times. The messaging of the movie gets heavy-handed and some of the subversive fun is lost in those moments. Nevertheless, Gosling and Robbie fully commit to their characters as does the large ensemble; and the production design and music are top notch. You won't be disappointed with a big box of popcorn. You decide if you want to wear hot pink like everyone else.

While Margot"The Barbra Movie," as intellectuals such as myself will be calling this film going forward, is an all-out explosive piece of satire with a powerful cast and important lessons that certain types of people maybe NEED to hear. While Margot Robbie was fantastic as Barbie, I feel like Ryan Gosling did most of the heavy lifting as Ken. Everyone else (especially Kate McKinnon) was excellent as the supporting cast and elevated the whole dynamic of the film.

The overall message of the film was not only impactful, but well executed. It didn’t feel forced, and not once did it feel like I was being preached to. A few of the jokes didn’t necessarily “land,” but most of the humor was clever and thoughtful. Some folks might feel that they’re not the “target audience” for this film but I say “fooey” and “pshaw” to that! Go and see this movie for a good time and a good laugh.

Barbie

Dazzling, heartfelt and brilliantly funny. Comedy of the year, movie of the summer!

Barbie is a beautiful blend of comedy and heart. Aided deftly by colourful visuals, Greta Gerwig tells the story of a doll coming to life, with as much intellect and emotion that's needed.

Barbie is unabashedly feminist, will ruffle some feathers (as it should), and will delight even more people. Themes of existentialism, individualism and masculinity are also dealt with.

Despite being a product of Mattel, Greta found a way to critique the parent company (although it's funny that the product that mocks the maker ends up raking in more money for the maker).

Margot Robbie is Barbie! She was an agreeable canvas, and she allowed Greta Gerwig to paint a very nuanced portrayal of Barbie. Ryan Gosling turns out a career-best performance in Barbie, stealing and shining in all of his scenes. The supporting cast also gives great performances.

The soundtrack was fitting, guiding the movie down to the finish line with Billie Eilish's 'What was I made for' delivering a wonderful culmination. The set design and costumes were brilliant too.

The lore of Barbie spans over six decades, so compressing it all into one movie was a definite challenge, but Greta was able to bring the most important things (including Easter eggs and fan service) to the movie.

Barbie does have its failings, and the most noticeable is the plot. The first half is very intriguing, quirky and pays homage to other movies, but the second half isn't as tight.

Barbie isn't perfect but it's a beautiful dose of everything good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the movie and I can say this is the most surprising movie of the year. Loved the movie. Greta really did a great job in balancing the emotional scenes as well as the comedic ones. I was surprised that there were some emotional scenes in the movie but hey not only were they there but they were well done. The scene at the bus stop where Barbie looks at the old woman was just beautiful. The jokes in addition were well written and the scenes were not just filled with stupid jokes like how we saw in Thor L&T. Was great to see a movie with jokes and fun considering how all the recent movies were all action and stuff. The cast was perfect. Margot Robbie as barbie was a incredible choice (that 4th wall break about her was well done and smart), Ryan Gosling as Ken was just....perfect. He and Simu Lui killed their role. Micheal Cera as Allan was great. He wasnt used too much, or too less but the perfect amount. The plot was well a bit thin but was well executed with good pacing, however the ending scene between barbie and the founder could be cut by a min or two. In contrast the "Ken War" has to be one of the best comedic musical scenes hollywood has come out with. That was just incredible to watch in the big screen. The set was just beautiful. Well done and executed on all levels, good pacing and great jokes. Good movie however I can see some people not liking it as this may not suit for everyone. 8/10 Expand

Second: the worst thing is that some decided to advertise the film as "feminist", which threw it into the middle of the ideological war... Third: if the film had come out in 2000s we would have treated it like "Pinocchio", "Bicentennial Man" or "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (yes, there is motive of searching for own humanity and meaning) and we would laugh ourselves to tears. The film is funny, it's quite successful satire on all sorts of extremes: feminism, patriarchy, stereotypes or weird warriors for the "social cause", but with some unnecessary quirks (mocking Pregnat Barbie for example). A reflection in a distorted mirror, satire, exaggeration, playing on stereotypes... Surprise, surprise: in Barbieland there are Barbies everywhere! The world is plastic, exaggerated, just like the world of Barbie, and Ken is just an accessory - just like in the world of toys! "Real" world is exaggerated more and this part is sometimes more tiresome... And no one from the target audience will appreciate this strange (and creepy!) reference to "2001: Space odyssey" from the beginning of film, a vain effort. Once it would have been an absurdly funny comedy in pink and plastic, today it is "woke" and divisive... because everything must be like in the "real world", sad. It is a very positive film, and we too easily fall into extremes. Blockbuster that is original, imaginative and not a tenth part of a well-known brand. And gives you food for thought. PROS: Margot Robbie is perfect! Ryan Gosling as Ken steals the show! Development and transformation of these characters. Visuals, set and costume design in Barbieland. Attention to details. Cast and acting (Yes!). CONS: Sometimes too preachy and then complaining about "patriarchy" has crossed the line of cringe... Expand

Big summer funtime must see!
Pink bubbles of the compassion, seriousness, and joy. Rejoice, a spectacular spectacle masterwork.

This film delves into Barbisplanation as to why Barbie, this so specific figurine has the ideal imaginations of women across every spectrum, every country is front and center. The complete humanitarian nature and playfulness is exemplified through this kitch comedy drama film.
It's not so much what Barbie looks like but the dreams of what lives can be for little girls when they grow up.
That's the greatness Barbie imbues and inspires in girls.

If males or men poo-poo this film, it only shows their inadequate understanding of girls and women and why they're on the outside, and why the fail at partnershipping females.

This film has brilliantly executed Barbie's world, lifestyle, and friends.
It's actually quite genuine ingenious and sincere to show you as it is.
All the cardboardness and hard plastic grounds why the fantasies it evokes are so poignant and real.
Everyone can play everyday without any harm.

Sure the props are poofy and fluffy,
however they do not define Barbie.
Neon yellows, peach pink to magenta pink
super convertibles and the boatiest of boats
Fur coat Ken to hobby horse Ken
Yes, it's all there.
The cherry is just that Barbie can be ordinary or and ideal.
A super extraordinary everyworldly accomplished archetype.

The director Greta Gerwig excels at storying telling with camp, parody, satire, big musical numbers, and drama. Equally firing all burners at all times.
A great opus of subtleness and condensation of Barbiessence.

And perfect casting.
Margot Robbie is just outstanding embodiment and her Barbie is pure finesse. Her core gives absolute meaning and believability to the whole film. We believe in her and root for her. Pure Aces. Just fun and wow.
Ryan Gosling unrequited hokeyness is so apropos. He makes up laugh with him, for him, at him because he is so us when we get happy, quirky, humiliated, or ignored. He's such a cut-up.

The writing dialogue by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach is served deliciously pink with no apologies.

A rainbow cornucopia of explosive and thrilling musical numbers, characters and quippy animations. Finally, it safe fun fiesta. For sure, double entendres are everywhere and you don't have to get them to just enjoy the sensationalism and sentiments. Kids will enjoy it like a circus or parade so bring them.

It's exactly the modern feminist manifesto we needed as a society right now, and was simultaneously the longest marketing ad for Mattel ever LOL I loved this movie, I cried multiple times. This movie feels like it was made out of pure love for women. Many parts of the film were like watching a celebration of female joy. It had a smart and necessary analysis into Barbie's role as a cultural icon and the effects she has had on girls self esteem, body image, etc. Ken played a very important role. He was essentially an incel who ultimately redeemed himself by rejecting the patriarchy and becoming a whole person (a whole Ken if you will LOL). He realized he could only be happy and become whole by rejecting his own toxic masculine ideals and accepting that he can be whoever he truly wants to be without the patriarchy. This movie has a lot of deeper meaning that was barely touched upon, but nonetheless welcomes further discussion about how both women and men are oppressed by a patriarchal society. Expand

Anything revolting against the "status quo" of "WOMEN MUST BE PUT DOWN" will get unecessarythis movie might just be the first one I've ever seen that tackles women's rights with a direct attack on all the cliche IM THE MAN sorta stuff. Anything revolting against the "status quo" of "WOMEN MUST BE PUT DOWN" will get unecessary hatred especially on a platform that does not need proof you went to see the movie, anyone can write a review which leaves room for misogynistic men to try to assume control over the situation by writing bad reviews and making the movie seem like a flop! Its really not, its amazing, the acting, the HUMOR, the story, and the content! Its a literal and full masterpiece! The humor was abundent all throughout the movie, the ending I still cannot get over, it tackled and adressed some very serious problems about society, and it left me feeling absolutely inspired to support women and to do my part in making the world a better place for each other! The theatre experience was even more amazing! Everyone decked out in pink, the theatre constantly roaring with laughter, it felt like a real family, bonding over trauma the world that's been taken over by man has given women. I seriously recommend watching it ESPECIALLY for men. I'm sure very little will go see this movie (even though we did see a ton of men at the theatre watching it), some men are just too self absorbed to care if women are suffering, being abused, or just plain harassed so Ill doubt they'll consider this movie as a MUST, but maybe, just maybe they'll walk away being a little bit more empathetic to women. Or take it as unreasonable complaining LIKE IT WAS ADRESSED IN THE MOVIE. "You have to love being a mother, but you can't talk about your kids all the time or that's bragging, you have to suffer in silence because if you speak out it'll be considered complaining" not sure if this is the exact quote or not, but you will hear something similar in the climax of the film with a ton of other sad truths of what its like. So to everyone who watched this movie, and to everyone planning to go watch it, lets fight back on our own front, write reviews! Explain what it was actually like to see the movie and lets raise these reviews! This is one movie worth watching. Expand

This movie was fun and paid great homage to both those who love Barbie and those who don't. My husband - who could care less about Barbie and had to be dragged to the theater - left talking about how much he enjoyed the movie and even said he would go see it again in theaters. We were laughing so much. The humor was perfect for adults but without being inappropriate for kids. Even the songs were so funny! The first song is just hilarious if you listen to the lyrics. The costumes were amazing. The dance scenes were fun. The Ken storyline was HILARIOUS. Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu were just fantastic and Michael Cera as Allan was so good!!

I've seen people online mad that they were making fun of the patriarchy and I feel like if you feel attacked by the movie, you're probably part of the problem. My husband had no problem with the lighthearted jests they made towards men, even saying he felt like he was guilty of some of them (like trying to always help me with sports).

The theme was pro-women without being too overly feminist. It was about appreciating the beauty with being a woman, ALL aspects of being a woman including the beauty of aging, finding our power, and even learning that it's okay to be an average woman (you don't have to be Presidents or physicists to be a powerful woman). I think it's such an important message that leaves you feeling proud to be a woman.

Overall, this movie is so fun and perfect for summer. Go watch it again and again for some fun.

Barbie is at its core a coming-of-age adventure with sharp sarcasm and a plot that involves questions within a film that is much more than it appears to be.
Greta and Noah delivered a self-aware text from the start. It's well written and sarcastic with moments of superficiality (on purpose), a lot of humor, innocence and also of course, drama. The film's reviews, despite being expository and often redundant, are not boring or overwhelming, on the contrary, they are made with a lightness and humor to the extent leaving the viewer entertained, light and at the same time reflective on the issues exposed. But I must say that the script exaggerates in some ways and some things have no explanation, but they are points that do not disturb the show.
Although the film has a lot of characters, only 3 have real narrative importance. Some supporting characters are interesting but there are a lot of characters left in the plot that would not be needed in the film, in addition some of them have bumbling level arcs. Among all, the highlights are Barbie and Ken. The change in personality, the maturation and the change in perception that both have with themselves and the world is remarkable and well constructed. Margot and Ryan managed to really be the characters and what we think of them.
Technically the film is magnificent. The worldbuilding of Barbieland in particular is perfect, no more and no less. The photography is exaggerated and artistic. The production design is sensational and deliberately plasticized and caricatured, matching the aura of that world. Another positive point are the costumes, which, like the production design, are colorful, extravagant and beautiful. The soundtrack is sensational and all the musical scenes are done with an absurd execution of choreography.
Barbie is a feminist film yes. But also necessary, funny, creative, smart and exciting, and who knows how to mock his own brand while questioning his place in the world and the world itself.

I found the film interesting as it starts out in a fictitious Barbieland, where all the different Barbie characters reside, and live perfect idyllic lives free from any stress or anxiety, well maybe with the exception of Ken who is a total simp, only happy when Barbie notices him. Barbie begins to have an existential crisis because it turns out her owner in the real world is not happy and this affects Barbie. She begins to have lingering thoughts of death, things in her playhouse quit working, and she begins to develop a little cellulite. She visits "weird" Barbie who is an expert on these dilemmas and is told she has to go to the real world to unite with her owner and make her happy again to prevent the crisis. From here the movie becomes kind of like a fish out of water adventure with Ken and Barbie in the real world. Ken learns about the patriarchy in the real world but can't take advantage of it because he has no real-world skills so he takes the patriarchy back to Barbieland. Barbie finds the teenage girl she thinks was playing with her, however, her owner actually turns out to be the teenage girl's mother. There is some good social commentary in these scenes in the real world on gender issues and consumerism; much of the criticism of consumerism promulgated by Barbie was delivered by the teenage girl and is meant to be overly harsh and rabidly left-wing. Will Ferrel plays the CEO of Nuttel who is in pursuit of Barbie to put her back in her box. It's a typical Will Ferrel performance, though his dialogue wasn't that great. In Barbieland, conventional Ken takes over and makes it an actual patriarchy with the Barbies being subservient to the Kens and brainwashed into being satisfied with their downgrade. Barbie ends up going back to Barbieland to rescue it from Ken and restore the matriarchy alongside the human woman and her teenage daughter. In the end, Ken learns to be satisfied with who he truly is and becomes less dependent on Barbie. The Kens in general are given marginally more influence in Barbieland, though the movie makes a facetious note that they would only end up getting as much power as what women have in the real world. Stereotypical Barbie ends up going back to the real world and becomes a real woman. Overall, the movie is very silly for the most part until the end when it becomes a little sappy. It's very entertaining though and always keeps your attention. Was it preachy? Maybe a little, after all I'd heard about the movie I was expecting it to be, but really the social commentary is part of what made the movie interesting. Expand

It’s definitely a good time with lots of laughs, regardless of your stance on the doll. Where it falls a BIT short is that it tries to pack a LOT into under two hours, leading to some messages not hitting as hard as they could and some plot points that just don’t make sense or add up.

Plus some of the non-principle characters/scenes feel a bit monotone compared to their technicolor world, and the film relies a bit upon overused tropes to drive its humor. There were many moments where I kept telling myself that the joke I was hearing felt familiar, but perhaps that is because the marketing team practically left nothing to be surprised by at the movie’s release.

Overall, if you have even remote interest, see it! But if the trailers didn’t do it for you, the movie doesn’t have a whole lot more to offer.

Honestly, the film had it all: great production design, great clothing and awesome actors and obviously good comedy. But in the last third pard of the film, it goes down and wasted it all.

In the hands of Greta Gerwig, the typical behavior of dolls and dolls, via imagination, takes on a critical form and points to many paths, visiting metalanguage, political-social relations, patriarchy and feminism, feelings (including the arrogant and insensitive posture of Barbie in front of Ken; as well as the sick transition of the doll in front of his girlfriend), such as existential crises or the acceptance of one's own social and gender condition. The work fulfilled the promise that we would have a product different from what one could imagine from a live-action Barbie. It is the assumed use of passive artificiality to show the contradictions, the suggestions of progress and the possibilities of a Universe with the face of the 1950s that no one ever had the courage to show what it really was, in all its nuances and possibilities of transformation. It's a big mess, but it has some tall peaks and is ultimately harmless fun. Unfortunately the movie at times seems to be aiming much, much higher. But pretentiousness aside, it's entertaining enough (especially Gosling)

I was a little worried about finding the preachiness annoying, but in fact it was just boring by the end. Had the politics of the film been interesting, that may have been better, but it's just everyday milquetoast feminism. This problem is compounded by an occasional streak of sentimentality. I guess I wanted more of an edge, but of course the film has to be kid-friendly as well so it's understandable. I don't know if the film is aware that the "real" patriarchal world is just as artificial as the barbie world, and that this kinda defeats the point of the movie. Or maybe the artifice is part of the point? I couldn't tell. On a comedic level, it's brilliant. Ryan Gosling was as good as everyone says, but many characters also have their moments. Margot Robbie is practically perfect.

Music plays a big role in the film. I hate musicals, but I didn't mind most of the songs here so count that as a positive.

I could have done without the whole mother-daughter thing. I get that it's needed to move the plot (which is itself almost superfluous) along. I just didn't find the daughter character remotely interesting and the actress wasn't great.3

The scenarios, sets, atmosphere, colors and visual effects are all amazing. Also, kudos for the soundtrack, it's really incredible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having watched all the animated movies, I thought I'd take the time to see the theatrical release of Barbie's first live action film. And I've got to say, I really like the new direction they are taking with this franchise. While I usually have fun mocking the cheesiness of the old films, this was an entry I could actually take seriously for a change...for the most part. It's one of those situations where an average comedy is attached to a really powerful message. Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, has started to think about death for the first time in her life, and wonders why her feet are becoming more realistic. Weird Barbie tells her that she is responsible for making a doll owner upset. And she needs to head to the real world in order to figure out what went wrong. This is a trope I've seen before in plenty of other live action remakes of other nostalgic pop culture and I'm really glad it's not the focus of this film. Sure there are some boring human characters here and there. But fortunately, the focus of this film is never forgotten. And that focus is, taking a closer look into Barbie's signature message, "You can be anything".

Later in the film Barbie learns that she is responsible for stereotyping while attempting to empower women, and doubts herself. Wondering if she has caused more harm than good to girls across the globe. It's a message I've heard before and it's usually fixed by reinventing the character, similar to how Super Girl was seen in the past and how she is seen now in media. I was hoping they could perhaps explore that message a little more delicately than just having a group of angry teenagers shove it down our throats. But it's not the leading message of the film, so I say just save it for a sequel. As for the leading message of this film, it's realized in the third act where Ken has taken over Barbie Land, brainwashing all the dolls, and poisoning the land with stereotypical masculinity...and horses. I'll admit that second addition I'll admit is pretty funny. So it's up to Barbie and the forgettable mother and daughter pair to save everyone. Ken really works well as an antagonist, because his motivation is tied in with his lack of identity. But he takes a poor direction, taking away all the rights of the female dolls and only giving new rights to the male dolls. But after he is defeated he breaks down and learns from Barbie that he should figure how who "he is". Write his own definition. The great thing about this message is that, it's a reminder to the boys, men, and even those struggling with identity that they can choose how to live their life. Not with tradition, but rather with choice. It's okay for boys to like feminine things. It's okay for men to wear dresses if they want feel pretty. It's more than acceptable to do things women enjoy and vice versa. What matters is what you do explores a new meaning of freedom and feeling whole. And in a day an age where there are still millions of people that have yet to understand this message of being whoever you want. I say more power should go to films like this.

While the film isn't perfect, with its hit and miss comedy, its occasional lengthy exposition, a bit two much fourth wall breaking, and its forgettable human characters. The effects with how the dolls move and the messages are quite impressive. It may not be a masterpiece, but what this movie leaves its viewers with will be refreshing to look back on in the passing years. You can be anything...and you can inspire others to do the same.

It was a whimsical, borderline funny movie that presented both femininity and masculinity in both toxic and healthy versions. Part of the movie that isn’t brought up much is that during the first few minutes, Barbie World, which is completely matriarchal, is shallow and plastic. Life in Barbie World is boring. Which is why after Ken brings the patriarchy from the real world almost everyone is on board. It’s different and fun. Then when Barbie returns, Barbie and a couple of others use deception and manipulation to win back power. Just like some aspects (some, not all) of the patriarchy, deception and manipulation are evil too. Then after Barbie finally sees Ken’s dilemma, instead of only focusing on herself, she supports him. It’s Barbie and its Ken. The message of the movie is not down with the patriarchy, nor is it anti matriarchy. The message of the movie is life is hard, with ups and downs and then you die, so we should support each other. Just like how some women see sexism everywhere or how some nonwhites see racism everywhere; I think the prevalence of anti-male propaganda in modern “entertainment” has led some people to see male bashing everywhere. I think this movie was balanced in its fault finding and the core message was to support each other. Expand

Not going to lie, I laugh considerably.

Watching it was fun 'cause I was curious to know how they would approach this world. Barbieland nails it with great visual identity, the cast was amazing and the plot serves to the point they wanted to make. Now, about the points...

I felt provoked sometimes in this movie and I consider it good, since questioning yourself is healthy sometimes. Some points were understandable and fun. Unpredictables and predictables. A little of everything, but most positive. My problem with this movie is how coarse it is about telling us its message. There is no problem about being a feminist drive movie, but when the director tells us about it openly (in an interview), saying "It most certainly is a feminist film" and the script throws his messages at us with huge exposure, that make the art itself one-dimensional.

I love to interpret scenes, characters, and the plot as a whole. But when the start point is already painted, It feels more like a lecture than anything else. There is no point in rewatching it when the point is as explicit as it is. I understand that's the director's objective, but I have the right to dislike it the way it is.

Fortunately, the movie is fun anyway. Margot Robbie is amazing, but not gonna lie, Ryan Gosling stole the thunder when he is in. The battle on the beach was the best moment, Alan is crazy and some takes are good anyway.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fine movie which serves as an introduction to various political concepts from a feminine lens. The physical sets and costumes/hair/makeup deserve praise for how excellently designed and constructed they are. They give the movie a more nostaglic and immersive vibe, and are a welcome breath of fresh air in this time of over-utilised CGI. The music was good and usually well placed, and the dance performances were elaborate and energetic.

Unfortunately, the heavy involvement of Mattel holds this movie back from completely committing to its own moral messages. Details such as them stealing the idea of Barbie from a German adult doll and buying the business out to prevent them from suing and the ongoing exploitation of workers in their overseas factories (the majority of which are women and children) are conveniently glossed over in favour of romanticising the multibillion dollar corporation as simply the creators behind Barbie. Depicting the higher-ups at Mattel as bumbling himbos whose biggest crime is a few hamfisted, ignorant remarks undermines the dangerous nuances of more covert forms of bigotry. The overall message that women (or any marginalised group) can gain equality just by voicing their suffering in a slightly more assertive manner is sadly a tried-and-failed tactic in the real world - respectability politics is futile victim-blaming because the people in power aren't looking to change their minds - they will keep moving the goalposts until a direct threat to their money and/or power is posed, to which they will do the bare minimum to mitigate it while waiting to creep the status quo back in. The teenaged Sasha, while well played by Ariana Greenblatt, felt like an unnecessary edition to the movie. Her main plot purpose is to be a red herring for the source of Barbie's intrusive thoughts and cellulite, and after the reveal that it was actually her mother Gloria behind this her relevance and transformative contribution to the story is minimal. Almost serving as a caricature of progressive Gen Z'ers, most of Sasha's criticisms of Barbie in her most significant scene are valid - the Barbie BRAND is attributed to poor self-esteem for women, girls and fem people, and is entirely built around excessive and obsessive consumerism at the expense of its workers and the environment. The fundamental problem is that she blames Barbie herself for these issues, narratively and thematically shifting the blame away from Mattel as a corporation (the nonsensical depiction of the higher-ups also serves to deflect accountability on their part) and dismissing her jaded criticism as a character flaw that must be overcome by the end of the movie. The criticisms themselves remain unaddressed, because that would require Mattel taking accountability and acknowledging their less palatable faults (especially current/ongoing ones), and a product endorsed by them isn't going to call them out too hard for obvious reasons.

I understand that she was most likely made to appeal to a younger audience, but I believe that her story should have been put into Gloria's instead - a girl who had fun playing with Barbie dolls as a kid, grew jaded as a teen after learning of all the negative effects of the brand, and then went on to work for Mattel to try and implement real change while indulging in Barbie as a form of nostalgic escapism as an adult. There was a lot of potential for a well-rounded Gloria who was more than an exceptionalist that repeats the protests of countless women before her yet is the one that makes systemic change happen. Incorporating Sasha's cynicism into Gloria would've made her feminism more realistic and practical in my opinion. In saying that, the toxic masculinity plotline was done surprisingly well. Despite rushing Ken's radicalisation, which could have had a bit more time and nuance dedicated to it, the fallout and resolution made up for it (that ballad was really fun and expressive). Despite what some vocal commentators claim, this movie is FAR from anti-men; in my opinion, some of the best parts of the movie are of the men learning to embrace themselves and each other without forcing their entire identities to revolve around anger, domination and co-dependence on women. It shows that toxic traits is a LEARNED concept not an inherent part of manhood/masculinity, and shows that men are likely to be happier when they're not being subjected to such impossible expectations. Overall, it's a good movie for those who are new to certain progressive political discussions, but for those further along the leftist spectrum it probably won't offer much and might in fact be too diluted or centrist for your liking. Regardless, it's a step in the right direction for mainstream media, and the over-the-top shenanigans and fun atmosphere alone make this movie worth watching at least once.

A film that should be lauded for its ambition, creativity, and virtuous commentary. The acting is fantastic and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling feel like the only actors that could play Barbie and Ken and they more than excel at it. It feels as though Mattel partnered with Greta Gerwig and the movies production team to help make themselves the butt of the joke and also help make one of the most powerful (if not most powerful) statement for women and young girls in our modern world. The movie suffers at times with story and structure but the dialogue, acting and visual design are top notch with so much comedic poignancy to keep you entertained throughout.

“Barbie” is the first live-action feature film after numerous computer-animated and television films.
After a shrewd promotional, marketing and commercial campaign that has raised expectations, expectations and a real Barbie-Mania, the latest film directed by Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird" and "Little Women") is finally arriving in cinemas, based on the famous fashion doll line of the same name born from the mind of Ruth Hendler and marketed by Mattel since 1959.
“Barbie”, scripted with acumen and wit by the director together with her partner Noah Baumbach, is an ambitious film in which the homage to the most iconic doll of all time, is not only strengthened by an elegant aesthetic and a surrealist heart imbued with rich and cultured quotations and cinephile references, but also becomes an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a woman today, as well as on the daily difficulties and struggles that this brings with it.
The work is not only celebratory, but it is also a mix of criticism (see the jabs at Hollywood, at Mattel – here in the figure of the CEO played by Will Ferrell, at all human contradictions) and social satire (the controversial standards of perfection and beauty associated with Barbie), as well as a cinema that speaks of female empowerment directly from the sensitive voices of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig.
In this brilliant, eccentric and imaginative film, the world's most famous doll experiences her personal growth, the transition from a utopian world to a real one, and essentially her evolution into becoming a human being and a woman.
The protagonist experiences the value of women on herself and conveys the impossibility of aesthetic perfection (and not only); and above all she affirms a strong sense of humanism that must be respected and carried forward. There can be no awareness, maturity and rebirth without (having first experienced) suffering and pain.
The film is enjoyable, funny but also unequal. It alternates very successful moments with less resolved ones.
Its most effective strengths are the irony, the pastel-colored photography, the softly pink scenography of Barbieland, the costumes, the convincing interpretations of the whole cast, the well-choreographed musical sequences between songs and ballets (there is also Dua Lipa – her hit “Dance the Night”), the soundtrack composed by Alexandre Desplat, some dazzling ideas of the enthralling screenplay (above all the incipit reminiscent of the monolith of “2001: A Space Odyssey"). Among the weaknesses, an excessive weight given both to the "subversive" aspect towards what the plastic Barbie doll has always depicted and represented (the ideal of the female body unachievable by consumerist and anarcho-capitalist behavior), and towards a specific didactic ambition which, if they could work to affirm the educational intent of the film, on the other hand greatly hinder the narrative fluidity, a greater inventiveness profuse in it, and ultimately the emotional charge.
Despite this basic non-balance and despite a mixture of genres, tones and registers that are not very cohesive with each other, the film is stratified and hides much more than what it shows.
In this sense, the concepts of existentialism and individualism are appreciable, which in some way have been argued and treated in the intertwining of events and characters: both Barbie and Ken undertake similar paths that will lead them to self-awareness, after having ventured into the real world and having discovered that it is a repressive patriarchal society, divergent from the matriarchal utopia of Barbieland; a real world in sharp contrast with a person's autonomy of thought, with respect for the other in his differences from us, and with the idea of what makes us human. Therefore, thinking of yourself as a self-determining individual makes you question the conditioning norms and expectations of society.
Furthermore, the script, directing style and staging also move in a functional way to the main ideological discourse that underlies the entire work (that simply being oneself which is already enough; or that fact that every girl is free to transform her Barbie fashion doll into something alternative to the blonde and elegant icon originally designed by Mattel), but despite this all along the way, they remain a little too much prisoner of these valid "messages" and of their own intellectual nature, leaving the ways in which the issues mentioned were dealt with were ordered and disorganized, as well as their insights were a bit incomplete and incomplete (especially in the central act and in the epilogue).
Net of this, net of renunciations and limits (also generated by the desire to speak to every generation), the film remains an entertaining, intelligent and humanistic entertainment that can be appreciated both in its visual-sound dimension, very accurate and refined, and in its more socially/existential "educational" one... Score: 6 / 7 out of 10

First of all, this is a highly completed work, the actors are faithful to the characters, and the rhythm completely obeys the expression. In this regard, its neat plot is far better than most Hollywood movies in recent years.

However, the content expression of the film still gives people a feeling of disconnection, although not strong, but still palpable, mainly because there is a logical gap that is difficult to bridge between the absurd form of asking questions and the superficial preaching of solving them.

In the end, the awakening and self-persuasion of the classic Barbie, to put it bluntly, is to restore the "Paradise" and regain those positions, rather than essentially rebuilding the understanding and cognition of gender and identity. On the contrary, it is the realistic and weathered mother who expresses the most sincere "ideal of being an ordinary person". I feel like this could have been done better.

As for the philosophical questioning of the meaning of human beings that appears at the end of the film, instead of finding it abrupt, I think it is just right. After nearly 120 minutes of color shock and gender questioning, everyone should understand: the world should be better, but women are not the only ones who need to strive for perfection.
