They were the ones that gathered the characters in a room and pitted them against each other, the inevitable war of the worlds delayed in favor of a much more entertaining war of words. This was the doing of Joss Whedon, god among geeks, hired by Marvel to pump some humor and life into the studio’s franchise-building strategy. What the writer-director saw in the plum gig, beyond presumed bags of money, was a chance to adopt another of his dysfunctional surrogate families. He treated the iconic characters, loaned out to him for a couple of expensive hours, like neurotic people, trading as many barbs as blows. The result was a summer event movie that felt playful and idiosyncratic, even as it skillfully delivered on its mandate to be just one part of a larger whole.

But Whedon, a true believer in the pleasures of comic-book storytelling, is no miracle worker. In Avengers: Age Of Ultron, his busy return engagement to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the strain of multitasking begins to show. Even at two and a half hours, this jam-packed sequel has little room for the kind of chatty downtime—the “off” moments Whedon excels at—that distinguished its predecessor. The film doesn’t just reassemble the all-star ranks, cramming sardonic billionaire Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), unfrozen super soldier Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), thunder god Thor (Chris Hemsworth), reformed assassin Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), flinty marksman Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and occasional giant green monster Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) back into the frame together. It also feeds supporting players, borrowed from Marvel’s various solo outings, into the franchise hub, while devoting additional screen time to the appearance of brand new characters. There’s so much ground to cover here—so many introductions to make, so much story to churn through, so many gargantuan set pieces to mount—that the movie never really finds room to breathe.

Whedon, quick as ever with the quips, hits the ground running: The film opens in medias res, taking a page from the James Bond series by dropping us into an Avengers mission already in progress. Storming the castle of Hydra’s last remaining heavy, the good guys emerge with some enticing spoils, among them the unexpected key to artificial intelligence. Stark, it would seem, is obsessed with the idea of creating “a suit of armor around the world”—a kind of automated peacekeeping program that would allow him and his crime-fighting colleagues to take an indefinite vacation. The film underdramatizes the character’s weariness, but no matter; from his utopian retirement plan comes the titular villain, a disturbed robot whose plan for world peace is considerably more genocidal than his creator would prefer. If there are no more people, there are no more wars.

Ultron, with his muscular metallic frame and expressive alien features, certainly looks cool. The film conceives of him as a kind of mad machine, his glitches manifesting as homicidal insecurities, and he’s been voiced—quite recognizably, despite the robotic filter—by James Spader, who sinks his teeth into Whedon’s venomous dialogue. If Ultron’s never quite as menacing as one might hope, it’s possibly because the writer-director also wants him to be a force of dark comedy, firing zingers nearly as relentlessly as his flyboy “father.” He’s more interesting, nonetheless, than the other villains: “miracle” twins The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), divorced of their mutant backstory from the comics. Olsen’s telepath, whose powers are numerous and a little vague, invades the headspace of our heroes; a less overstuffed film might have treated these mind games more abstractly, rather than simply sending Cap and company through Nightmare On Elm Street versions of their origin stories. As for speed demon Quicksilver, he has his moments, but none as remotely fun as what Bryan Singer did with the same character in X-Men: Days Of Future Past. The film could use any sequence as joyful as that movie’s “Time In A Bottle.”

Age Of Ultron leaps across the globe, as the Avengers hunt Ultron from New York City to Africa to Eastern Europe. Each new location is a demolition derby, a model city to be leveled during another frantic set piece. Whedon gets the elastic physical reality of comic books, and he knows how to frame a shot—like a late overhead image of the characters, arranged in a circle, attacking in every direction—as though it were a splash panel come to life.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Avengers Age of Ultron is a film that I feel gets too much hate and I think it is more clever than people give it credit for. I think part of the reason why people have started to give this movie a lot of flak is the fact that it didn't surpass everyone's expectations but I think that it was a great movie for what it is. I do agree that the wow factor is not as strong and it is not as groundbreaking as the previous film but it is still a major blockbuster that excels at what it does. The Avengers are pushed to their limits in this one as they are torn apart mentally after the fight in Wakanda. Each Character felt like they have changed as a result of what happens in this story. The Hulk is now more of a loner than he was before and Black Widow has finally revealed part of her past. I personally have some mixed feelings about her portrayal in this film though because she is capable and she has more depth with her relationship with the Hulk. However she was captured pretty easily and the fact that she sees herself as a monster by having to go through the sterilization process sends a questionable message. With all of those problems though the film still has great set pieces and funny one liners. The best part of the film was when the Avengers were at a party and interacted with one another. I actually would have been satisfied if they had spent the whole movie at this party. The new characters that were introduced are actually compelling in their own right. This version of quicksilver may not be as funny as his fox counterpart but he still has a few moments to shine. The Scarlet Which has an interesting power by bending reality and mind control and is torn between her loyalties between her brother and Ultron. It was an interesting move to make Jarvis the vision but it was a move that pulled off pretty well. The seeds of the future conflict between Iron Man and Captain America are sown as they bicker over the need of creating Ultron and the fact that Stark was pretty backstabbing in this film. Hawkeye was given a lot more depth than any of his previous incarnations since he is given a motivation to continue fighting for his family. He is also an important father figure to Scarlet Which after the death of her brother and gives an inspirational speech. The heroes is this film actually act as heroes unlike their counterparts in the DC Cinematic Universe as they make attempts to evacuate civilians from the carnage. The biggest thing that this film does right is Ultron himself. He is both intimating and funny at the same time. Some viewed him as a weak villain because of the fact that he ha been pummeled by the heores but people forget that he is a computer program that can spread his consciousness to other machines. This film turned one of my least favorite Marvel villains and made him into one of my personal favorites. He may be a machine but he also breaks expectations by having a sarcastic sense of humor and is genuinely disappointed when the siblings turn on him. This film is not a ground-breaking as its predecessor but it is still a great film in its own right.. Expand

Oh dear... "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is a mess, but a very fun one. It wants to do bigger and better things, but never for a second does it. An unfortunate predicament for Whedon.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What were we expecting honestly? Leave Joss Whedon alone, Marvel is to blame for this mess. You simply can't have 57 different characters and about 12 different plot lines in one movie and have that make sense.

Also

Clint does not have a farm. Clint has an crap apartment in New York and roof top BBQ with his neighbors and all the good things Matt Fraction gave us. Clint does not have a wife and kids. Clint has a pizza dog. Clint has one friend. The farm is a cliched, lazy piece of garbage. The kids and wife aren't real, their agents. It's all a plot, Clint Barton does not have a farm.

The character of Ultron is a missed opportunity, because in the comics it is one of the worst enemies of the Avengers but here it is just another messed-up AI inside a robotic body. New characters include the Maximoff brothers (aka Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch) as well as the Vision.

No vais a encontrar nada.

Entendre dire qu’Iron Man se
retire à la ferme
me dégoute...

It's very much a "monster of the week" type of story, and it spends a lot of time setting up threads that will pay off in other movies, but it's still a very functional superhero blockbuster. Joss Whedon makes it work better than it should. He's pretty ambitious with the character work this time around, and even when those ambitions aren't fully achieved, it's admirable to see him attempt to give these characters more layers.

That's not to say the character work is bad. The added depth that does shine through certainly enhances the experience, and the Avengers still have great chemistry. Whedon's dialogue is as witty as ever and makes for wonderful banter. Banter that carries over to Ultron, whose parallels with Tony Stark are fascinating. Whedon's decision to have Stark play a pivotal role in Ultron's creation was bold, and I think it paid off.

Compared to the first movie, the action isn't quite as strong, but it's still well thought out, and the few standout set pieces (particularly one where two Avengers fight each other) are absolutely superb. Seeing all these heroes together just doesn't feel as sublime as it did in back in 2012, which is to be expected. It's hard to capture magic like that more than once. The biggest issues here is that the climax doesn't do enough to set itself apart from other superhero movies.

All things considered, this is a worthy follow up to one of the greatest superhero movies ever. It rarely reaches the heights of that movie, but it doesn't have to. It might have an overstuffed plot, but Whdeon's hand keeps things moving at a good pace. If you loved The Avengers, you should still really like Age of Ultron.

After a solid phase two I initially felt it was solid but was disappointed mostly in the lackluster villain. That being said watching it all these years later it's quite thrilling. The characters are developed a bit more but not in the way you'd like them to be and the film does have some dragging sequences. That being said the new characters are fantastic Scarlet Witch played by Elizabeth Olsen is fierce and Quicksilver played by hottie Aaron Taylor Johnson is fun. The film is darker but the central group is as entertaining as ever. Sure there's a few blips along the way but it still stands as a fine piece of entertainment.

Whedon exits this group with a half grinned face after getting an applause for an admirable attempt.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Whedon is both straining and stretching it. For a brief period you ARE fooled, in believing that there is a lot going on, on this prodigious IMAX screen. But this misty figure will reveal itself and it is one big disappointment dressed in a bling-y superhero costume with gadgets so smooth and powers so unfathomable that it would giddy up the fans for more. But in this people-pleasing gold-digging chapter that is not only overstuffed with characters but also with irrelevant one-liners, the missing vital puzzle is the zip of the flow that its previous chapter was brimmed of.

With antics set oddly and the battles staged that can spiral out a heated debate in a bar, the purpose that drives all these characters into the battlefield seems outdated, overthought out and utterly complex in its malleability, yet eventually leads to the same old event that we had previously been part of. Joss Whedon, the writer and director, whose incongruent direction that somewhat made its previous chapter questionable, has clearly ran out of luck by this time. What this chapter does most importantly is shine the light on Downey's arc on this franchise, by this chapter, we can easily see that not only is he the nucleus of the group, but how rich the character gets as each side of his perspective puppets this cold world.

"We're mad scientist" he schemes with Ruffalo and there is an eye popping revelation that is cathartic for us as viewers. The antagonist is frankly dull, contradicting itself for few laughs, James Spader fails to shake the "Earth's mightiest heroes" which by the way Elizabeth Olsen does it in a snap!- no.. that was close. Jeremy Renner finally gets his mojo back with something to say that is both a criticism to itself and honest and as his speech grows longer quoting, "this doesn't make any sense.." it somehow does just not to the people residing in an Age Of Ultron.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is a spectacular movie and has some stunning visuals and plot details. But the villain, Ultron (James Spader), doesn't feel compelling and Avengers: Age of Ultron has, yet again, a huge army of disposable things. Marvel's The Avengers, Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy had this too. Although an Avenger finally dies for once it isn't that heavy on the plot and it doesn't feel heavy either. Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) was only introduced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and only had 30 seconds in the movie. This time around he is actually in the movie but you don't really connect with him as much. CGI wasn't perfect (especially on the disposable robot army). But the movie does continue the characters' story in a good way and lets us know about some of their biggest fears which make them even more compelling. Overall Avengers: Age of Ultron was maybe not what everyone was hoping for and may have even disappointed some people, but it is not a bad movie and it is even pretty good. The movie is a more than solid entry in the MCU.

I remember finding Ultron very annoying and the pacing very rushed, but now I relly enjoyed him and the pacing, while still rushed, flowed a lot better.

The biggest problems are that the third act is a bit hard to follow and, worst of all, the stupid Hulk and Natasha romance. What were they thinking?

However, it also has some of my favorite MCU moments. The party sequence is amazing. Just the Avengers hanging out and being friends is wonderful to see. Hawkeye steals the show and becomes a much more interesting character. And the nightmare sequences are honestly terrifying.

It's messy, but more consistently enjoyable than I first gave it credit for.

Everyone else saying that there's not enough character development for the superheroes in this movie needs to remember the solo films for Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. Do you want character development? Go watch those movies.

I'm happy Marvel gave Black Widow and Hawkeye the spotlight more on this film. They needed the extra character development because the other three main heroes all had solo films to help them out.

This was clearly a level-up from their first film. Although much more action-oriented, the production value still screams Marvel and what I liked most is the refinement of the collaborative action scenes.

Solid choreography and the storyline was pretty decent. I personally liked the first film better but this is still a good, fun watch.

The only reason I can think of why someone would not like this movie is because they either have not seen the other films Marvel has released or they just don't understand how Marvel creates a film.

I found the writing in this film to be witty and sharp. The humor was on point and I laughed way more than I should.

Compared to the first Avengers, there's a lot of things that they improved on in this film. From the storytelling, to the much more defined fight choreography, it's definitely a step-up from the previous one.

Strong film from beginning to end. Has just enough humor, angst, and drama to make it a film worthy to be called a sequel.

It's just what I feared. Marvel has gotten so caught up in making sure that each character gets some action time that there's no room now for character development. They need to tone it down a bit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After the release of Avengers: Infinity War, I began bingewatching all the MCU movies so that I could catch up in time with Avengers: Endgame. I had heard of Age of Ultron before as I once eavsdropped my classmates when they were talking about it one time. The only thing I knew about this movie was the meme in which Captain America is lifting the Mjolnir. So it'd be pretty much clear to say that I had no idea what I'm about to watch. I watched it with a blank slate. And somehow it managed to be worse than The Avengers in spite of the bigger cast and budget.

There are many things I like about this movie, and many things that I absolutely hate. This is probably the only superhero movie I have ever seen in which I like the conversation scenes more than the fight scenes. And that's exactly why this movie is such a mixed bag for me. The cinematography is so good it makes all the previous movies look campy, and the CGI is easily superior to any movie released before this (not just MCU, any movie at all). However, I didn't like the depiction of Ultron. The movie made him look like a total loser. The way Vision just wiped him out in the post credit scene was the last straw for me.

The only fight scene I liked in this movie was the one between Iron Man (Hulkbuster) and Hulk, since I hate Hulk and this was finally the point where my favourite hero Iron Man beats him to pulp. Everywhere else I felt like getting in the screen and slapping everyone. Black Widow (bleugh!) and Hawkeye are killing all the Iron Man clones with just a pistol and a bow. Ultron always shows up like he's supposed to be the most powerful creature to ever exist, and then gets whooped and goes away. It completely undermines the threat he is, if it wasn't for the Sokovia scene.

Speaking of the Sokovia scene, Quicksilver was the most terrible introduction to any superhero shown in the franchise. The X-Men Quicksilver and the MCU Quicksilver remind me of the Buff Doge vs Crying Cheems meme. His death in Sokovia made me go, "Oh no! Anyway...". Wanda was a much better character, but there was no way to tell she's the legendary Scarlett Witch if we don't know about it already. Same could be said about Quicksilver, but Scarlett Witch got a lot better in Captain America: Civil War, which made her redeemable for me.

Another thing that annoys me throughout the movie is that Black Widow has finally been reduced to what we always expected Joss Whedon to want her to be - an eye candy. Bruce Banner fell on her in one scene (I feel it's hypocrisy if we only talk about Flash and Wonder Woman but not this) and in one scene she kissed Bruce and then pushed her in a pit so that Hulk comes out. And Hulk is a completely separate entity yet he never seems to harm Natasha, even though he did it once in The Avengers.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is like the black sheep of all the Avengers movies. In spite of having huge potentials it simply falls flat in terms of everything. I really like all the characters in their own individual movies and MCU was going so great until this movie came. It's kinda weird The Avengers picked up from The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 yet made them so cool while this picked up from Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier still couldn't live up to their expectations. I'd give it another shot when I have nothing better to do, but until then I'm not gonna be liking it.
