Not a great movie. If you really like Marvel and The Avengers, then yes, you should see it. It's visually pleasing, it has good fight scenes, it has character development, and it has tech. Lots and lots of tech.

These things were good to a lot of people, including me, but I think that while there was a significant amount of character development, it lacked a lot of internal development and was mainly focused on development of the relationships of the characters.

It wasn't linear, which is a good thing in most cases, but it also seemed a bit random. Now they're in Europe! Now they're in the US! Now they're on a farm!

I did like the development of Jarvis, but other than that, not a spectacular movie. They drew it out for too long; I feel they could have said a lot of things in a shorter time frame. I definitely prefer the first one.

The movie is like one long action sequence that is incredibly boring. I have zero investment in the characters and the movie has far too many visual elements which makes everything look phony. It is as bad as anything Michael Bay has put out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cheesy dialogue, terrible script, terrible plot... This film was a complete waste of talent for everyone involved. Avengers: Age of Ultron leaves a sour taste in the mouth of anyone who expects a good movie. The first film was far from perfect, but this was awful. How on earth anyone can give this above a 4, I have no idea - Because it is a genuinely bad film.

So, the second outing of the Avengers forces them into battle against Ultron, an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark (apparently, no matter what the comics say) to save the world. And in a boring, predictable plot "twist", Ultron realises that humanity and the Avengers are the problem, so decides to try to kill everyone.

The opening scene has the team trying to attack a Hydra base... for some reason. And SHIELD has been shut down... for some reason. Because Marvel doesn't care about those who don't want to spend hours watching one of the worst shows on television right now. So yes, to fully understand the film you need to watch Marvel: Agents of SHIELD, which I don't advise at all.

Most of the time, plot and script coherence is sacrificed for jokes which will appeal to no one over the age of fifteen. Because apparently a psychopathic AI who wants to wipe out mankind isn't serious, for some reason? Add that to the completely forced, on-screen romance between Black Widow and Banner - despite the fact they have no chemistry whatsoever, and you have hardly got the makings for a good film.

Do you know what else doesn't make a good film? Plot holes. And, like every Marvel film before it, it's riddled with them. Thor, for example, decides to leave after being shown a vision (based upon fear) by Scarlet Witch. Because "someone who can control minds put you into a vision based upon your fears" wasn't a good enough explanation? So he decided to take Selvig and go to a mystical pond or other. Why? It's never explained. What is this mystical pond you speak of? Never explained. Where is this mystical pond? Never explained. What does this mystical pond do? Oh, that's easy to answer. It sets up another Marvel film. It has no other purpose.

Now, let's talk about The Vision. Ultron finds "the mind stone" and decides to build himself a human-like body made of vibranium. Well, it has vibranium pieces every now and then. But the team manages to take said body from Ultron, and Stark and Banner upload Jarvis' personality matrix into it. But they're interrupted, then Thor returns from his quick dip in the mystical pond and shocks its pod, bringing it to life. And what you have is another god-like being to join the already unbeatable team! He can fly, and shoot rays out of his eyes, and apparently seal AI's out of the internet. And that's all you know. But he is a completely ridiculous character, and seemingly indestructible. The only time you see him take any damage at all is when he manages to fall unconscious after disconnecting Ultron... for some reason. In fact, you rarely see any of the heroes getting hurt... at all.

Which brings me on to the final battle. The Avengers team versus an army of thousands. Sound familiar? Yep. That's because it's just the same as the final battle in the first film. The antagonist caught in a monologue, and the Hulk beats the **** out of them. Sounds familiar? Yep. Same as the first film.

Age of Ultron lacks any suspense, and you never wonder whether or not the team will win. Even in the first film, you had a few scenes where it looked like the enemies were gaining the upper hand. But not in this one. The protagonists (during what little time you spend with each) are always shown effortlessly destroying hordes of enemies. Your heroes are all powerful and unbeatable, Marvel. I get it already. You don't need to make another film just to show us that. But how do you expect it to be interesting when you know the heroes are going to win?

These films just have too many characters. You have no character development at all. But this film has decided to add in more characters... for some reason. The tactic makes no sense, especially when the previous film had too many characters too. This film is a mind-numbing disappointment, and the fact it has got so many positive reviews just shows some people have no idea what makes a good film any more.

For the most part, he does it by perfectly casting his characters. That said, I have very little to say about this movie itself, other than the fact that it is terribly long, the plot being practically paper- thin and convoluted at the same time for anyone who is not familiar with the source and the undeniable fact that it lacks heart. In my opinion, some recent standalone Marvel offerings, especially Captain America: Winter Soldier and the fantastic Netflix's Daredevil far outshine this multi-million dollar mess. Expand

(For anyone who thought this movie was better than the first one I suggest you stop reading now as I'm likely to offend). A film with such promise, such good character development by some, how it managed to become an utter mess of explosions and robots is beyond me. Looks like they used Man of Steel as a reference point for the fight scenes and destruction of the entire city. The interaction between the characters was one of the better things in the movie but was hindered by the overwhelming amount of people. James Spader was a spot on choice, if there's one thing the Avenger films get right is the choice of villain. Definitely worth a watch but I never want to see it again. Expand

A lot of scenes feel a bit recycled from the previous movie. I was also annoyed by the extended evac scene. Cap acts stupid and demands the whole team die if they cant save the whole city. Ultron becomes evil from the get go and starts acting like well a bad guy from Buffy which is totally inappropriate for this movie. The writing in this movie is attrocious. In fact, if you turn off the sound - you’ll miss nothing - nothing that makes any sense- and be left with a long boring “motion” picture including a tasteless recreation of 9/11 - a skyscraper collapses while soot covered people run amok. In a year of films where man vs. machine, robot, iphone and internet cable this dud fits right in without a moment of human heart soul or imminent danger - an unnecessary evacuation in the last twenty minutes. Really? When for two hours nary an onlooker’s body bruised. Enter the fickle twins - one flits while the other f***s with your head - but the only fear we have is being left out of a phenomenom - whose box office receipts are generating more excitement than what’s on the screen. For movie goers hoping for something old- something new- something borrowed- and something that blew us away - forgetaboutit. At least until Star Wars- I hope. It’s amazing it’s taken Hollywood almost 40 years to get back to “2001”. Expand

I wanted to like this movie, honestly. But Marvel has become too big for its own good.
In a few years, this will be the movie people point to when they say 'this is where it took a nose dive".
Like Amazing Spider-man 2, there are too many characters and too much back-story that the director/writer tried to cram into here. What could have been a good development story for the main cast turned into a muddled affair of branched sequel set-ups for future movies.
That's all Marvel has become honestly. The character development happens in the stand alone movies for good reason - they are the only focus.
Maybe instead of messing with TV-like stories and cameos, Marvel should focus on character development only with one character at a time. This one could have been about Iron Man only, but instead it turned into multiple characters having flashbacks/flash forwards that it's hard to keep straight.
Honestly I hope Marvel universe gets back to the normal stuff, like developing one character at a time.
Also, same formula here for the first Avengers (bad guy steals something, beats the good guys once, twice, and the third time the good guys win!), although they added two characters to help the bad guy, then turn tail once they realize the motive.
In summary, worth a rent to keep the story straight for later movies (and the expanded Marvel universe), but not worth the theater screening. Skip it and wait for DVD. See Mad Max instead.

This particular installment was the most CG action porn I've seen in quite some time. It was just so obvious that so much of this was done at green-screen, I'm not really sure the stars earned their pay! Seriously, I think all they had to do was run, jump, and roll a few times while the CG artists created all the mayhem around them. They're the ones that should be walking away with millions. My other complaint is just with the DNA of the franchise itself, all the snarky remarks from Stark, and the little bits and quips from the others just cheapens the gravity of the situation. Similarly, with the need to save/evacuate that whole city. Is there something in the comic book domain that says the Innocent Public must be preserved at all costs?! This may have been laudable in the '40s/'50s but in this Age of Terrorism we KNOW this to be different and it just wreaks of quaint naivety which again cheapens the overall experience. I expect far more plausibility from a film with a nine-digit budget. So, good film, though far from great. Expand

Sure, some individual scenes are exciting but the movie drags. The plot is extremely predictable, which is of course true of nearly all superhero movies, but the story doesn't even engage in the moment. Talky scenes are added in which do nothing to enhance the story and end up feeling like mere time wasters. It did start out well, and did entertain me for a good deal of its running time so I can't say it was bad... but the finale is the same old, same old. As much as I am an Avenger's Fan I was a bit taken aback. The concept is interesting, the action is breath taking, yet I continuously feel I missed something and that feeling was there till the end.
The fellow mates of Tony Stark appear to be lost and unless someone wrangles them up for some action they appear more than misplaced at times.
The usual cohesion and teamwork of the cast that made Marvel so phenomenal just isn't there.
James Spader as a 'robot' just didn't do it for me. I am sorry. (and I love James Spader)
I am sure Marvel could have come up with a better story and if this movie is not the preparation for the next one, I could surmise that we all seen Marvel's prime time and expect more nose dives in the future.
Yet, I keep my hopes up high and consider this one a small forgivable error (or misstep) and wait impatiently for the next spectacle.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first half was really good, but, then, everything fell apart. I'm not quite doing this in order, but there's one huge, huge problem. I call him Marvel Superman, but I don't know who the red guy is that was created out of Ultron/Jarvis. That was extremely confusing, but more importantly, THERE IS A REASON HE'S CALLED MARVEL SUPERMAN. IT'S BASICALLY A COPY OF SUPERMAN, AND THEY DON'T HAVE THAT RIGHT, AS DC, THEIR RIVAL, MADE SUPERMAN. HE LOOKS LIKE SUPERMAN, WITH HIS CAPE, A BLUE BODY, RED AROUND, ETC. HE IS ALSO SUPPOSEDLY ONE OF THE STRONGEST THINGS OUT THERE, AND HE'S KIND OF IMMORTAL. THAT'S SUPERMAN. THEN, TO CONFIRM MY SUSPICIONS, HE HAS FRIGGIN' LASER VISION. Ignoring copyright issues, I'm very, very confused by what happened. It's showing one city being destroyed, yet it says billions are dying. There are other problems than confusion, but before I end with confusion, WHAT IS ULTRON? 2 of the villains turn to the heroes, which is, in my opinion, a terrible idea, and one of them dies in the stupidest way. I don't remember his name, but at least the movie actually said it, but I call him Marvel Flash. Because he's kind of the same thing, but not as close as Marvel Superman, fortunately. Either way, he runs in the way of bullets heading for a little boy and... I think it was Hawkeye. PROBLEM, he could easily push them out of the way with his speed! Then, the ending sucked. The Avengers were supposed to separate, and they really should've, but instead ALL of the good Avengers are out (Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America (I think))! They make this crappy ending to make another movie. It was still a 6 after all of this crap, including an unnecessary and weird romance between Black Widow and Hulk, taking over 2 hours, because the premise was amazing. It started off as probably one of the best movies ever, but then it completely collapsed. I'm disappointed. I didn't expect it to be as good as the first, but at the very least, decent. Expand

The darker tone it was intended to have is thrown out the window and even though Ultron was a very likable villain, but the plot was very stereotypical and lacked any real depth. There is way too much going on with many different sub plots and some random romance that comes out of nowhere is thrown in your face. The film drags on drastically long as well. Overall a lot of mixed feeling. A lot of good and a lot of bad. I recommend watching it however it's definitely a blast to watch. Expand

Hear me out. I’d take this advice before diving in.

You fanboys need to apply some Bengay to your anal cavities, like, a fistful. Many of you, in spite of pleading levelheadedness, will still be butt hurt by the ghastly, blaspheming I am about to commit on your figurehead God of blockbuster entertainment and I wouldn’t want your inflamed buttocks to blossom into a full on hemorrhoidal ****

I say this because I care.

Age of Ultron is a mess. It’s a blockbuster that confounds, feeling simultaneously bloated and fatally undernourished. If anything, it serves as a strong testament to an ongoing and fatally regressive refusal to capitalize on the massive emotional invest a good majority of the public has in these films by taking serious dramatic risks. Big-budget escapism will never die, so long as intellectual pandering continues to be the most effective pheromone luring the mindless drones to the multiplex. This latest Avengers entry isn’t guilty of all that I condemn most populist entertainment, mainly because there is a team of resilient artists with integrity fighting for control of this project. This odd meeting of genuine talent and ambition with the compromise and sacrifice that comes with mounting a 200+ million dollar tentpole has processed Age of Ultron a confounding concoction. It shows signs of fleeting life in passages, but is at nearly every turn bullied into submission by established parameters dictating the film be palatable before it be good.

This franchise has already set the stage for an endless churn of films that are at war with being less brand-entry and more standalone, but there's one thing that has been consistent with all Marvel films that tattoo this monotony on each work: None of the primary characters are susceptible to the loom of mortality. For a superhero series, one that frequents in thrusting it’s characters in preposterously harrowing situations, it eliminates the concept of stakes altogether. Even though the effects and action choreography occasionally stumbles and conveys kinetic thrills in spite of itself, I found myself constantly pulled out of the moment by the nagging realization that none of this violence serves a purpose, or ever will, until, like this series, it is acknowledged that it's characters can die.

When Age of Ultron isn’t bombarding you with diverting action, it’s characters are interacting, which is almost worse than the nihilistic fight-scenes. EVERY OTHER LINE OF DIALOGUE IN THIS FILM IS A CATCHPHRASE. There are intermittent highs that rescue these playful, cheesy jabs from resulting in complete cinematic flatlining; just when the ordeal feels ready to capsize through a barrage of one-liners and turn me off entirely, Whedon and co inject a playfully off-kilter segment or a split-second visual gag that actually works. Nonetheless, my cringe face got quite the workout watching Age of Ultron. I’m fine with Marvel's light, easygoing tone, but the reality of the film fringes on collapsing on numerous occasions because Tony Stark can’t have a conversation without punning it up. What a dick.

These blunders made in Age of Ultron are reprehensible enough, but my primary issue with the new Avengers is it's jumbled, frenetically conducted rhythm. Nearly EVERY transition is tainted by a transparent, gaping wound - plot holes of an enormity so egregious that each venue feels teetering of the edge of complete derailment. Whedon HAD to make compromises in order to condense his latest staggering behemoth into a franchise-loyal, cohesive(ish) tentpole centerpiece, while simultaneously retaining his integrity, allowing for legitimate personality to seep through the cracks of his latest high-budget, crowd-drawing effort. Age of Ultron is an immense, seven-course meal and Whedon had the task of delivering the dish, which by no means could be safely digested without unbuckling your waist and allowing your protruding bulge to breathe. Not a particularly attractive look.

To resist stagnancy and stifling billow, he surgically extracted every scene that didn’t warrant it's absolute necessity. This may sound like he has crafted a lean, carefully honed film, free of needless indulgence. He has not. Instead, Whedon got shaky hands on the operating table and ripped out scenes that, though not eventful enough to justify their existence entirely, were ESSENTIAL elements of cohesion and overall flow. I’ll list of a couple instances; if I regurgitated every gap of consistency, I’d be risking redundancy (which Whedon showed little regard for) and stretching my memory thin:

How did Bruce find Natasha imprisoned by Ultron, why was he not guarding her, and why was she not just killed in the first place? (he wasn’t holding her for strategic ransom or anything). How the **** did Thor know when to come back to resurrect Vision during the scuffle in the lab and what happened with him in the pool of water? (this segment feels completely incoherent, not redeemable IMO).

Ultron comes and goes in this movie and with each screen appearance you understand the character less and less. A bit frightening in his screen debut, he goes through daddy issues to end up patheticaly. Despite Spader's voice, Ultron has been handled in this movie poorly. As all (or almost all) of the characters to be fair. This movie feels like Iron Man 3.5 with too much focus around Stark, Whedon's pat on the back to Renner - "sorry for the first movie, in this one you'll be important. Don't care whether is makes sense", romance between Banner and Romanov is... well, as many have stated before me - dull and plain stupid.
But! The movie is not bad - the effects are great, some of the fights are handled great and a few lines are worth mentioning. As a standalone it can defend itself. As a sequel it fails miserably. For the Marvel Cinematic Universe Avengers: Age of Ultron could not exist. It wouldn't change much. Maybe it would be fot the best...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bland story, numerous plot holes, and by-the-book action scenes make this film one of the least compelling or interesting in the franchise. The only fun part about this film is the action scenes but even the final action scene is boring because we saw a similar fight scene in the original Avengers film. The story was horribly rushed with new characters being introduced far too often, often with little to no explanation. The main villain, Ultron, is possibly the lamest antagonist I have ever seen, his constant singing of Pinocchio's I've Got No Strings only makes me feel like I'm watching a child friendly A Nightmare on Elm Street. The only thing that kept me going were two things; the intense and violent action scenes, and the investment into this series that began back in 2008. This is a fun film to watch, but don't expect it too surpass any other Avengers film, The Incredible Hulk was funner to watch. Expand

Film is a visual medium, and while I don't necessarily think that the newest installment of the Avengers franchise was a visually interesting film, it was a visually exciting film. And for that, it earned three points.
As far as story, character development, writing, direction and virtually any other element you might grade a movie on, Avengers is a monumental failure. Let's start with the villain: the element that, in my opinion, makes or breaks a superhero film.
James Spader voices "Ultron," a sentient robot with the intellect of Einstein and the jokes Carrot Top. He's the brainchild of Tony Stark (who, similarly, has the intellect of Einstein and the jokes of Carrot Top,) and has come to rebel against his creator and wipe out the human race. Why? Well, he was programmed to protect the world, and he's going to do so by....killing everyone? Look, I'll be honest, I kind of checked out during this explanation. The point you need to take away from this is that Ultron is a poorly conceived, non-scary, bad joke machine.
As for the Avengers themselves? Well they're as self righteous and blandly Americana as ever....

Look, I'm going to cut this review short. Here's the deal: fanboys are going to love this movie because they evidently have no taste in film, or, their blind devotion to some integral part of their childhood is masking them to the fact that this was a 2 hour plus, morality spewing quip-fest. If you like good film you already know to stay away from this dumpster of a movie. I thought the nerd in me would redeem this flick (and, to be honest, there was nothing going on TV that night,) but I realized that I like good movies more than I like superheroes.

The previous film in the MCU Captain America: Winter Soldier (which was great) had a love interest between Black Widow and Cap, but all of a sudden Black Widow is in love with Bruce banner??? I don't know where this came from, but it felt forced, and the chemistry was not there. Then when Ultron came around to being born he decides he hates the Avengers for... well... reasons I guess. From that point the movie just felt like a bit of an action packed mess. Can't say I really enjoyed this one that much, I tried to, but just couldn't. Expand

Sure it's big expensive well orchestrated action, but I would argue very boring action when one too many of this director's specialty of let's say "idiotically unrealistic synchronous action plays, as in someone picking up or throwing or shooting something and hitting the one in a million mark over and over and over to the point of zero believability" results in therefore zero jeopardy. This thing has way too damn much action. It's just a blur of utterly forgettable nonsense at the end of the day isn't it? The silly dialogue could only pass muster for 8 year olds and the attempts at humor are coming from the sensibility of an uber geek, in other words it's not funny! Half a dozen funny one liners by the complacent Downy Jr. do not make up for it, much less the drivel coming out of the other actors' mouths.
I am a fan of superhero movies when they're good, like the original "Superman", "Batman", "X-Men", "Spiderman", "Iron Man", "The Dark Knight" and "Captain America" to name a few. Those are fun for all ages without being insulting to the intelligence of adults. That's way more than can be said for this overloaded juvenile film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie feels like a tired rainy day, from the gray washed out colors of the entire film, to the lackadaisical attitudes of the characters as they crack jokes while they fight enemies, because fighting apparently isn't a challenge for them anymore. The plot is awful, predictable and thrown together. Ultron's motivations are unclear and happen so instantaneously that they are just a plot convenience and the character has no depth. Late in the movie a certain character purposely jumps into a hail of bullets to protect someone else and the motivation for why is very unclear. I don't have a lot to say about this movie because it just felt unengaging on almost every level. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are two new characters of interest, but their involvement is tepid and they don't really become fully realized characters. The character introduced latest in the film also seems very interesting, but in some ways feels like a Deus ex Machina. Is there anything good about this film? I guess some of the action is okay, but most of the movie is boring and conversational, with needless family and relationship developments that make it feel more like you're watching Lifetime than Marvel. One of my least favorite films of the MCU. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Avengers : Age of Ultron is a movie which the trailer wants us to watch the movie because it's awesome. However, the movie is disappointing because Ultron is evil because he is evil (he has no real motivations to be cruel) and he is boring. I felt like the movie was too long, because of the love story between Hulk and Black Widow, of the dialogues sometimes (some jokes weren't funny, is it because I saw the movie in French instead of English ?). They put characters we didn't know they exist on the movie, I expected a well-known superhero like Spider-man or Superman for example.
The story is disappointing, but the graphics are beautiful.

It wasn't necessarily bad, as such, it just wasn't anything special, and certainly not as good as the first. Ultron felt more like a plot device than a fleshed out villain, and the entire movie amounted to setup for upcoming movies, specifically Civil War, Infinity War, and Black Panther. It contributed very little to the MCU in itself, apart from pulling the audience away from liking Iron Man, so that Civil War might be more acceptable to them. Its a necessary point, I think, in the MCU, especially since many viewers aren't readers of the comics, but in itself, it was it was a little lack-lustre. On top of that, the story felt very compressed.

That said, it wasn't a bad experience. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to watch it again, but it was worth watching once, if for no reason other than to make better sense of future Marvel movies.

This film is a CGI show and the only reason they made this film was to get money. With way to many super heroes to and bad plot line this film is a joke.

Too much action. Too much CGI. A-typical corny action dialogue with a plot that suffers from all of it. Not a must see film.

The biggest problem with this film is its narrative. Much like "The Amazing Spider-Man 2", this film tries to tell a cohesive story while completely falling flat. The plot is filled to the brim with characters and backstories.

However, it's far from the only flaw this movie has. James Spader is good with his performance, but Ultron is one of the most badly written villains I've ever seen in a super-hero movie. His motivations for going up against the heroes of the story are really nonsensical and out-of-place. There is no build-up to him becoming a villain. It starts right in the beginning of the movie and it's so haphazard that it's impossible to take it seriously.

And all of the sudden, there's a romantic subplot involving Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff? What? Where did this come from? This movie is packed with so many of these things that at the end it's uncertain what the movie is trying to tell us.

And although the cast and action set-pieces are far from terrible, they are not exceptional. As for the action, it's hard not to be taken out of the movie when it all feels computer-generated.

Overall, this movie just isn't good in my book. It's tonally inconsistent, narratively confusing and very uninspired.

3/10.

Despite this, it's yet another undeniably entertaining ride. The formula is starting to wear thin now (another flying thing climax!) and Marvel really need to make a change. But if Age of Ultron represents the climax of this particular phase, then they have bowed out on a strong offering. That said... Please. No more big flying things in the third act! Expand

Doubtful script and excessive destruction, "Age of Ultron" is a reasonable continuation, suffering from excess characters and delivering more of the same without much news.

Stark has created the Ultron programme which becomes sentient and threatens to destroy the world in a plot that is generally quite hard to follow. Unless you are a Marvel geek most of the plot is fairly unintelligible, the fun for the casual viewer is the character interplay and the big set pieces, both of which deliver in spades. However, so much of the plot is the setting up of future films that confusion soon prevails and it all becomes a little tiring, with the standard finale of a city being blown apart in an orgy of special effects. It's still hugely entertaining but you can't help feeling that the formula is getting a little tired and some fresh blood may be needed Expand

I had high hopes for the movie but they were totally crashed to the ground.
It's a completely disaster at every part nor the one. The whole scenes look like hell. Inappropriate dialogues, useless fighting battles, new un fully discovered heroes, childish jokes which seem really silly. In addition we have awful script which doesn't give logical answers to many things by the end of a film.
Of course the CGI effects may seem to be fine and you will enjoy a few picturesque scenes but even that can not help the movie to go on high-hope experience.
Looks like JW is done by playing the main role in making the new Marvel universe. I guess, this is not his blame while we can point freely on the policy of Marvel.
Eventually, you will be disappointed for sure, if you are not a little kid with no brains at all. It is very sad, that the sequel could not beat the first one. It gives nothing new but takes everything good we had.
