The first film wasn’t actually too bad, but Marvel have reached their nadir here with this preposterously over long (Eugene O’Neill long is right!) bum numbing drivel. It suffers from an excess of toos. Aside from being too long, there’s too much noise, too much exposition and too much nonsensical talk. In fact, too much of everything bar entertainment. It is essentially brain dead gibberish. Ok, so the special effects are as predictably good as they should be for a film of this budget but everything else falls way short. The actors’ characterisations add nothing by way of compensation. Indeed, two members of the ‘B’ rated cast distinguish themselves by not cutting it even alongside this low standard of performance. Aaron Taylor-Johnson seems to whisper his way through the film as if not convinced he should be there, and Samuel L Jackson is just laughable in his eye patch. He has never been able to live up to his iconic early performance in ‘Pulp Fiction’ and most of his appearances these days are in thankless supporting parts like this. As in previous Marvel outings the attempts at humour fail miserably. However, unintentional laughter is evoked here by attempting, but failing, at pathos in a handful of scenes. The budding romance between Johansson and Ruffalo is lame and one only wishes that they would take their own advice to each other and ‘Disappear’. At the film’s close as I raced for the exit I was only too well aware that everyone else was transfixed, eagerly anticipating the possible nuggets that were going to be thrown up during or after the credits. I knew that I need not stay as I was never going to encounter these characters again in my lifetime. Amazingly the critics have been surprisingly kind to this elephant sized mess. To re-energize my brain I went home and tuned into an episode of the TV series ‘Wolf Hall’, an entertainment of real pedigree that offered me more in five minutes than this did in 141. Expand

I had hoped this would be a twist where Black Widow is using Banner to control the Hulk which would have made more sense. Some of the building shots were weak miniatures. The CGI was overused to cover a lapse in storytelling. This is the worst story-telling Whedon has done & I remember Alien 4. Perhaps it'll be repaired in the DVD release? But I hated it. Expand

Having watched The Winter Soldier only recently, Age of Ultron really paled in comparison.

The movie is just so bloated, there's too much going on but at the same time not much of anything because none of it is given enough time to develop properly. Countless characters are introduced throughout the movie in a matter of seconds and the story is shifting constantly, it's exhausting and not in a good way.

I miss the simplicity and fun that the first Avengers had... On the plus side, Vision was very cool.

The story seem to add up but in the end the whole thing has no soul. There is nothing there intelligent being told about the interesting subject involved like the human vs A.I thing but i could have written this script on a napkin during lunch. Being a family movie is no excuse... Any Disney, Shreck or even Lego movie had something interesting to meditate about but this one.... ouch... Adding a buch of titanesque explosions could have been nice back at the time Indepence day came out. When it was something new... If i want a bunch of adrenaline rushing realistic explosion for 2 hours, i just have to go on Youtube... Sorry to all the talented people who really worked well on the movie but the masters of operation are asking them too much and have no real idea of what they are doing... Trying to be Avatar each year may be too optimistic... Expand

Mother always said if you don’t have something nice about someone/something then don’t say anything. I didn’t always listen to mother and in this case I have some things to say.

Our choice of movie going this Friday was “Avengers”, “Avengers” or “Avengers” and if I don’t go to a movie on Friday the world may shut down so I decided to go see “Avengers: Age of Ultron” with an open mind and though I meant well it didn’t turn out that way. When you watch a movie that is 2 hours and twenty-two minutes long with 2 hours of special effects and twenty minutes of a love story unless the reason you came was for the former then it was a waste of your time. The first time you see a special effect it can deliver but after the same effect is shown for the tenth time it is loud and boring as most of the effects and computer work is in this film. A perfect example is watching the first time Elizabeth Olsen, as Scarlet Witch, throws a psychic fireball until she throws so many you just want the next scene to come.

With the movie directed and written by Joss Whedon the only relief you get from noise is when he concentrates on a romance between Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and Scarlet Johansson as the Black Widow or when he is showing the home life of Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner and his wife played by Linda Cardellini. Hopefully Chris Evans who plays Captain America, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Olsen’s twin, will follow the leads of Johnansson, Ruffalo and Iron Man, Robert Downey, Jr., and use their avenger money to make and/or direct independent films.

People who go to see “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and will make it a record breaker, are fans of Marvel comics, comic books, loud special effects with accompanying loud music, shattering glass mindless chases and fights.

I did give the movie a chance but if next time there is a choice of another Avenger’s sequel or one of the many similar looking previews of summer ‘blockbusters’ or not going to a movie on a Friday then I will pick the last choice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After watching this film, I’m glad Joss Whedon isn’t taking over Avengers: Infinity War, since there are several things I hated about it:
1. I didn’t find Ultron very menacing or compelling since he acted like a buffoon Disney villain. Just like Joker in The Dark Knight, his pretentious pseudo-philosophical babble tried too hard to sound important, but it really wasn’t. Not to mention his plan was pretty silly (it never seemed to me like his “meteor” could exterminate mankind).
2. Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were miscast, they didn’t bring much charisma or depth to the table, their characters' motivations made no sense, and their awful Eastern European accents that came and went were quite distracting.
3. Blatantly recycling plot elements from the first movie, namely, Hulk going rogue against the team and the villain controlling the mind of a scientist for his own gain.
4. One of the reasons the first movie worked so well is because it kept things relatively simple, whereas AOU’s script has too stuff much going on. Because of that, it felt incoherent and disjointed at times. It almost gives The Amazing Spider-Man 2 a run for its money.
5. Overall, I thought the scenes in Hawkeye's house were boring and didn’t really go anywhere (why does Hawkeye’s wife act like she knows the Avengers perfectly after a few hours of meeting them?).
6. The only reason the Hulkbuster armor scene exists is to have another toy to sell.
7. Why is S.H.I.E.L.D. suddenly active again? Did Joss Whedon not care about the events in Captain America: The Winter Soldier?
8. Most notably, the contrived and cringe-inducing attempt at a romance between Black Widow and Bruce Banner. Not only does it come out of nowhere, it’s entirely out of character for both Natasha and Banner, especially the former. Black Widow was established as someone who tries to keep her distance emotionally speaking so things can stay professional in the previous films. It seems Joss Whedon forgot about the moment when she said “love is for kids” in the first movie. As for Banner, well, I guess we’re supposed to pretend Betty Ross never existed…
The only positive aspects I found were Vision and the long shot at the beginning. Just like the Iron Man sequels, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World, it's one of those films that was made to sell merchandise rather than telling a good story. Joss Whedon was going though the motions and seemed to think "who cares about character development and making sense? the movie is still going to make millions!" Such a massive disappointment, especially after the wonderful Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Heck, even Guardians of the Galaxy was better.

Mid-combat quips don't break the tension, because there IS no tension to break, because there was another mid-combat quip less than 3 seconds ago. The villain is, for NO in-universe reason, a snarky, meta, sarcastic jokester. Because he's Joss Whedon, just like everyone else.

The "romantic" subplot is out of character, self-indulgent, and frankly just awful. Every single moment of it is painful to watch.

Aside from one gorgeous battle at the end, this movie is barely worth seeing.

You know something's wrong when you enjoy seeing the hero of a movie getting beat up. Black Widow is as vacuous as always - only change was her haircut which made her look plain. Nice work. To be fair, Thor, Banner and Captain America are fun to watch as always. The same can't be said of Ultron who is probably the weakest of all Marvel's weak villains. Badly designed and badly written, it must be said that James Spader does the best with the awful material he's been given.. And of course, as with ALL Marvel films, lots and lots and lots of horrible CGI action with horrible tracking camera shots that are aimed at providing FIST PUMP moments but fail miserably. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cheesy dialogue, terrible script, terrible plot... This film was a complete waste of talent for everyone involved. Avengers: Age of Ultron leaves a sour taste in the mouth of anyone who expects a good movie. The first film was far from perfect, but this was awful. How on earth anyone can give this above a 4, I have no idea - Because it is a genuinely bad film.

So, the second outing of the Avengers forces them into battle against Ultron, an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark (apparently, no matter what the comics say) to save the world. And in a boring, predictable plot "twist", Ultron realises that humanity and the Avengers are the problem, so decides to try to kill everyone.

The opening scene has the team trying to attack a Hydra base... for some reason. And SHIELD has been shut down... for some reason. Because Marvel doesn't care about those who don't want to spend hours watching one of the worst shows on television right now. So yes, to fully understand the film you need to watch Marvel: Agents of SHIELD, which I don't advise at all.

Most of the time, plot and script coherence is sacrificed for jokes which will appeal to no one over the age of fifteen. Because apparently a psychopathic AI who wants to wipe out mankind isn't serious, for some reason? Add that to the completely forced, on-screen romance between Black Widow and Banner - despite the fact they have no chemistry whatsoever, and you have hardly got the makings for a good film.

Do you know what else doesn't make a good film? Plot holes. And, like every Marvel film before it, it's riddled with them. Thor, for example, decides to leave after being shown a vision (based upon fear) by Scarlet Witch. Because "someone who can control minds put you into a vision based upon your fears" wasn't a good enough explanation? So he decided to take Selvig and go to a mystical pond or other. Why? It's never explained. What is this mystical pond you speak of? Never explained. Where is this mystical pond? Never explained. What does this mystical pond do? Oh, that's easy to answer. It sets up another Marvel film. It has no other purpose.

Now, let's talk about The Vision. Ultron finds "the mind stone" and decides to build himself a human-like body made of vibranium. Well, it has vibranium pieces every now and then. But the team manages to take said body from Ultron, and Stark and Banner upload Jarvis' personality matrix into it. But they're interrupted, then Thor returns from his quick dip in the mystical pond and shocks its pod, bringing it to life. And what you have is another god-like being to join the already unbeatable team! He can fly, and shoot rays out of his eyes, and apparently seal AI's out of the internet. And that's all you know. But he is a completely ridiculous character, and seemingly indestructible. The only time you see him take any damage at all is when he manages to fall unconscious after disconnecting Ultron... for some reason. In fact, you rarely see any of the heroes getting hurt... at all.

Which brings me on to the final battle. The Avengers team versus an army of thousands. Sound familiar? Yep. That's because it's just the same as the final battle in the first film. The antagonist caught in a monologue, and the Hulk beats the **** out of them. Sounds familiar? Yep. Same as the first film.

Age of Ultron lacks any suspense, and you never wonder whether or not the team will win. Even in the first film, you had a few scenes where it looked like the enemies were gaining the upper hand. But not in this one. The protagonists (during what little time you spend with each) are always shown effortlessly destroying hordes of enemies. Your heroes are all powerful and unbeatable, Marvel. I get it already. You don't need to make another film just to show us that. But how do you expect it to be interesting when you know the heroes are going to win?

These films just have too many characters. You have no character development at all. But this film has decided to add in more characters... for some reason. The tactic makes no sense, especially when the previous film had too many characters too. This film is a mind-numbing disappointment, and the fact it has got so many positive reviews just shows some people have no idea what makes a good film any more.

A film with such promise, such good character development by some, how it managed to become an utter mess of explosions and robots is beyond me. Looks like they used Man of Steel as a reference point for the fight scenes and destruction of the entire city. The interaction between the characters was one of the better things in the movie but was hindered by the overwhelming amount of people. In fact, if you turn off the sound - you’ll miss nothing - nothing that makes any sense- and be left with a long boring “motion” picture including a tasteless recreation of 9/11 - a skyscraper collapses while soot covered people run amok. In a year of films where man vs. machine, robot, iphone and internet cable this dud fits right in without a moment of human heart soul or imminent danger - an unnecessary evacuation in the last twenty minutes. Really? When for two hours nary an onlooker’s body bruised. Enter the fickle twins - one flits while the other f***s with your head - but the only fear we have is being left out of a phenomenom - whose box office receipts are generating more excitement than what’s on the screen. For movie goers hoping for something old- something new- something borrowed- and something that blew us away - forgetaboutit. At least until Star Wars- I hope. It’s amazing it’s taken Hollywood almost 40 years to get back to “2001”. Expand

Avengers: Age of Ultron is a largely dull affair that lacks the humor, energy, and excitement of its predecessor while continuing in an uninteresting and emotionless plot with convoluted thinking. Pietro and Wanda were cool though.

I felt like all of my excitement that built up for this movie was never fulfilled one bit, there was nothing that made me go "WOW" like other recent movies, especially like GOTG. I probably won't ever watch this movie again, it isn't worth my time, I found no enjoyment in this at all. Marvel needs t get their **** together, Iron Man 3 sucked, Thor has never been good stand alone, now this film. I hope Ant-Man and Black Panther don't sucked like this did. Expand

Film is a visual medium, and while I don't necessarily think that the newest installment of the Avengers franchise was a visually interesting film, it was a visually exciting film. And for that, it earned three points.
As far as story, character development, writing, direction and virtually any other element you might grade a movie on, Avengers is a monumental failure. Let's start with the villain: the element that, in my opinion, makes or breaks a superhero film.
James Spader voices "Ultron," a sentient robot with the intellect of Einstein and the jokes Carrot Top. He's the brainchild of Tony Stark (who, similarly, has the intellect of Einstein and the jokes of Carrot Top,) and has come to rebel against his creator and wipe out the human race. Why? Well, he was programmed to protect the world, and he's going to do so by....killing everyone? Look, I'll be honest, I kind of checked out during this explanation. The point you need to take away from this is that Ultron is a poorly conceived, non-scary, bad joke machine.
As for the Avengers themselves? Well they're as self righteous and blandly Americana as ever....

Look, I'm going to cut this review short. Here's the deal: fanboys are going to love this movie because they evidently have no taste in film, or, their blind devotion to some integral part of their childhood is masking them to the fact that this was a 2 hour plus, morality spewing quip-fest. If you like good film you already know to stay away from this dumpster of a movie. I thought the nerd in me would redeem this flick (and, to be honest, there was nothing going on TV that night,) but I realized that I like good movies more than I like superheroes.

Why? Because it's Marvel. That's why. Maybe if everyone stopped supporting this redundant garbage they would put some effort into their movies instead of filming a porno of Black Widow and Hulk, slapping their logo on it, and then sleeping on a mattress of money. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie had stunning visual effects which kept me entertained part of the time, but other parts of this movie had me scratching my head. The previous film in the MCU Captain America: Winter Soldier (which was great) had a love interest between Black Widow and Cap, but all of a sudden Black Widow is in love with Bruce banner??? I don't know where this came from, but it felt forced, and the chemistry was not there. Then when Ultron came around to being born he decides he hates the Avengers for... well... reasons I guess. From that point the movie just felt like a bit of an action packed mess. Can't say I really enjoyed this one that much, I tried to, but just couldn't. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie feels like a tired rainy day, from the gray washed out colors of the entire film, to the lackadaisical attitudes of the characters as they crack jokes while they fight enemies, because fighting apparently isn't a challenge for them anymore. The plot is awful, predictable and thrown together. Ultron's motivations are unclear and happen so instantaneously that they are just a plot convenience and the character has no depth. Late in the movie a certain character purposely jumps into a hail of bullets to protect someone else and the motivation for why is very unclear. I don't have a lot to say about this movie because it just felt unengaging on almost every level. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are two new characters of interest, but their involvement is tepid and they don't really become fully realized characters. The character introduced latest in the film also seems very interesting, but in some ways feels like a Deus ex Machina. Is there anything good about this film? I guess some of the action is okay, but most of the movie is boring and conversational, with needless family and relationship developments that make it feel more like you're watching Lifetime than Marvel. One of my least favorite films of the MCU. Expand

The biggest problem with this film is its narrative. Much like "The Amazing Spider-Man 2", this film tries to tell a cohesive story while completely falling flat. The plot is filled to the brim with characters and backstories.

However, it's far from the only flaw this movie has. James Spader is good with his performance, but Ultron is one of the most badly written villains I've ever seen in a super-hero movie. His motivations for going up against the heroes of the story are really nonsensical and out-of-place. There is no build-up to him becoming a villain. It starts right in the beginning of the movie and it's so haphazard that it's impossible to take it seriously.

And all of the sudden, there's a romantic subplot involving Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff? What? Where did this come from? This movie is packed with so many of these things that at the end it's uncertain what the movie is trying to tell us.

And although the cast and action set-pieces are far from terrible, they are not exceptional. As for the action, it's hard not to be taken out of the movie when it all feels computer-generated.

Overall, this movie just isn't good in my book. It's tonally inconsistent, narratively confusing and very uninspired.

3/10.
