The special effects were fantastic, and Cameron made the right move by delaying this movie until Stereoscopic 3D had been perfected. But that was perhaps only one of few right moves made by him. The plot was well overdone, and incredibly predictable. But the lush jungle of Pandora immersed me, and the long run time didn't overstay its welcome. I won't be seeing it again any time soon, if ever again. But I would not be entirely opposed to buying it on Blu-Ray. Bottom line, go see it, 3D is not necessary, but recommended. Expand

James Cameron gets all the credit for this decent movie, when all the good stuff, ie, the visual effects, were done by Weta Workshop, a company which every NZer knows the name of, and yet gets little credit for taking up the slack for the weak plot.

Cameron has produced a unique world that lives and breathes and who's alien inhabitants we end up genuinely caring for. My criticism is that yes, the story and dialogue are a bit simple in places, and the "human invaders" are caricatured in such a way as to make it easy to detest them - so Cameron's crime is perhaps to underestimate the sophistication of his audience and shove the moral message down our throats rather than create a more believable villain and leave us with more to chew on. Nothing really interesting happens until the last 30 or so minutes, which is very well done tho. But nothing unusual happens and it tends to be predictable. Just an average movie with great CGI. Saw it in IMAX 3D and the action sequences and camera movement at the beginning of the movie was just blurred and unwatchable (and it wasn't just me). Visually, it was stunning but not the world-changer that I had been lead to believe that it was - at least for the public. It may be this type of world-changer for the industry. It was beautiful but failed to live up to the high expectations that I had. As a movie, I thought it was the biggest piece of anti-military, anti-corporate America, and pro-enviromentalist propoganda that I had ever seen. It was so one-sided that it hurt the film. Could he not have filled in some backstory on what drove the corporation to need the underground resource other than pure evil greed or give the military a more realistic sense other than simple blood-lust. There was no depth to these elements of the story which exposed Cameron's liberal, self-hating mindset. If he spent as much time and energy into making a great movie as he did into pushing his liberal agenda then it would have been huge success instead of the beautiful propoganda piece that was released. The most successful part of Cameron's operation was making sure the full extent of the bias of his film was not discussed before opening weekend to save the boxoffice. That will not be the case the second weekend. Prepare for the backlash. Expand

Seeing Pandora through the eyes of an uneducated human-turned-alien is the perfect vehicle for spellbinding encounters with the landscape, creatures, and foliage of this strange world. But there's something utterly familiar about the adventure, with plenty of predictable moments to keep us safely on the rails. This didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie--even with formulaic plot points, the storytelling was well crafted and the CG characters were believable and poignant. Based on the trailer, I expected to be distracted by the shifts between CG and practical photography, but in practice it worked well. As the story hit its stride, I came to sympathize with the Navi and this emotional investment further helped suspend disbelief. Walking out, my cynical take was: "Matrix meets Titanic meets Pocahontas." But even with nods of the head and recycled material (see: credit music), the sum is much greater than the parts. Expand

The CGI is a new benchmark in cinema history, and although at times the Na'vi don't quite look real, it's a hell of a lot closer than anyone has ever come before. The 3D is expertly judged and deployed; none of that crap like spears pointing in your face every two seconds, but proper effects which are only used when needed. The plot is slightly overused, but to be fair Cameron wrote this fourteen years back when it still would have been original. So don't judge him on that. Still the undisputed King of the World. Expand

Avatar stunk to high-hell. If it weren't for Cameron's Abyss, Aliens and T2, this movie would be derided, lampooned and called out for the pile of festering caramelized feculent slime that it is. This movie is rife with terrible Avatar stunk to high-hell. If it weren't for Cameron's Abyss, Aliens and T2, this movie would be derided, lampooned and called out for the pile of festering caramelized feculent slime that it is. This movie is rife with terrible acting, horrific dialogue, and its 'message' is delivered through constant abuse of moral hazards. We have moral relativism, betrayal and treason being perpetrated for the greater good. This was a 3D wrapped celluloid that without the stunning (yet stupid looking) visuals would, especially in novel form, be a bloody laughing stock. The aliens stunk horribly. What's with the talking bi-peds with two eyes, a nose and a mouth. Has it ever occurred to these creative people that new life might be a colony of nano-bots, a slime mold with intelligence, life that aspirates with copper based blood, non-DNA self replicating life forms? Why is everything a blue monkey? At least in 1969 when Star Trek was populated with "old-form" Klingons that looked like a bronzed human they were on a near-zero budget, but at least they were totally re-defining sci-fi and giving a window into the future. Crap like Avatar, especially after T2, Star Trek, Star Wars (Ep 4,5 only), is shocking. Its showing that Cameron is a master of marketing mass subscribed explosion fests laced with politically motivated parables and drivel and sub-themed with nothing intellectual because there is nothing beyond the visual veneer, it is fundamentally puerile trash that's been hussied up to look like way more than it actually is. Anyone who defends this movie is simply a below average or nearly average mind that can't see past visuals that are no more complex of a stimulus than a piece of string is as a cat toy. They are incapable of rational or critical thought and are very likely a wage slave heavily in debt working towards no particular end, lost in life, and movies like this are a form of escapism where they "want to believe" and become immersed in something because their own lives are basically mundane, insignificant and unimportant. Moral hazards. Identity politics. Thinly veiled political positions. Preaching to the customer/consumer/viewer. Moral relativism. Severe lack of plot, dialogue and finally acting capability. This is a turning point for the world. It is showing how things that stimulate basal sensory centers in the simplistic human mind lead the herd into mindless oblivion. I mean, the Avatar are flawless, they have no strata in their society. The bad guys here are 100% bad, and have no capacity for rational thinking or empathy, except scientists in white coats, they have all the wisdom, empathy and intelligence and are always right. The characters were utterly simplistic, like toys and images made for pre-verbal children. Its like having tele-tubbies in massively expensive exquisite 3D where every frame is lovingly crafted to present to you some of the flattest, most uninspiring characters ever created. This movie is clearly below average, if you liked it you are the reason Hollywood is cranking out garbage these days. This man spent 10 times what District 9 costs and made a movie far worse, (not that that was any benchmark or the cat's meow), and this huge budget could have given 10 directors a shot at making something good. This block-bustering famous director / famous actor garbage has to stop. Expand

However, despite the stunning, naturalistic, organic look of the characters and environments, the heavy handed themes and stock characters hold this movie back. This is on of those movies where the director writes the point of the plot on a baseball bad and repeatedly hits the audience over the head with it. We get it: The planet Pandora is Iraq or Afghanistan or any other place the U.S. invaded and tried to plunder only to be rebuffed a determined native population. Subtlety is clearly not Cameron's style. Even though I enjoyed the breath-taking visuals (especially in 3-D IMAX) and all the effort put into the creation of the alien creatures/their culture, I kept getting distracted by the cliche characters from Earth's military industrial complex who seemed to do their basic training at central casting. I guess when you make $500 million movie you need to present clear archetypes so that even the simplest boob can understand. Although not completely brainless, this is not exactly a thinkin' fella's movie. What it is is great Hollywood sci-fi action which does have something to say. Although it does so with the subtlety of a fuel tanker slamming into a dynamite factory. Expand
