The plot, acting and character development was so bad, Is it good entertainment? Yes. Is it a great movie? No, not even close. I walked into the movie expecting a great visual spectacle with an average plot and character development. The plot, acting and character development was so bad, however, that it frankly ruined the technological experience. I would recommend seeing it in theaters just for the visuals. This movie is not going to translate well onto the small screen. and after 5-7 years, after the technology is dated, people will look back and think "this is a truly awful movie." There is nothing beyond the visuals to carry this ham-fisted outing. Once the technology is no longer new, this will definitely not stand the test of time. I would think with $250 million, James Cameron would have bought himself a script. Expand

I thought it was decent...definitely overrated. It had impressive CGI but a crappy script. I am really surprised by all the attention it is getting. Not terrible, but not the best of the year either.

This film is beautiful, pretty well-executed, a damn good family movie, and really manages to evoke the feelings it wants to. Of course, the problem being that the story is full of cliche, and as far as I'm concerned, it didn't tackle any interesting issues enough to warrant it higher than an 8 really. That's when I was certain that there was nothing that rang true in the world being created. As if James Cameron could conceive of a any alternative form of evolution. It was half-baked ideas, one after another, and characters that were simply cringe worthy. The whole cinema laughed when the aliens started a trance dance to some gaudy Enya music to make the simplistic pantheistic god do some magic. The laugh wasn't as loud as when the aliens has sex. Cameron created a big extravaganza. But the world and characters he created lacked any complexity to the point that you could simply not buy any of it. The graphics were nice. The story, by any measure, was embarrassing. Expand

It sucks you in, making you believe you saw a good movie as you walk out of the movie theatre. After the dazzle wore off half way through the movie I started realizing how predictable the movie was, how stereotypical every character was. The mercenaries were brutal killers, the protagonist falls in love and switches to the "good side",the corporate exec. was willing to turn his head for profit. Where were the variables. I do see the side of the plot that is trying to make a point on what we have become as a society and what we have done to get here. Overall it felt like a very expensive Pocohantas. Expand

They've both spent ridiculous amounts of money on over-hyped and extremely over-rated pieces of garbage. The difference is, at least Lucas didn't steal ideas from at least a half dozen other films that tell the same story much better. Pocahontas, FernTree Gully, Last of the Mohicans, The Last Samurai, BraveHeart. I won't bother explaining the plot because if you've seen any of the above mentioned films, then you've seen Avatar. And they didn't require flashy CGI to get their story across. Speaking of which, the CGI is by far the highlight of the movie, but even that was eclipsed by Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. And that movie is 10 years old now. The characters are one dimentional, the acting is fairly poor and the dialogue would surely make Lucas himself cringe. At least he can sleep peacefully in the knowledge that he didn't create the word "unobtainium". How the hell the actors managed to say that with a straight face I'm buggered if I know. Also, the movie makes such a blunt statement about our environmental woes and war in Iraq (we will fight terror with terror) that it is, quite frankly, an insult to the audiences intelligence. If I want to hear people make political and environmental statements I'll watch the news thanks very much. I go to the movies to escape real world issues, not to be beaten over the head with them. Cameron also stole a couple of sound effects from the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. Can you pick them? Expand

If it were merely a pretty picture, inspiring film makers to create new worlds when presented with the plausible impetus to do so, there would be no debate in my mind. But it's not. This movie has been respected by critics and commonplace audience alike. What did it do beyond it's visuals? It was written unwittingly, seemingly with an intent to do just that. The story inspires nothing more than a cheap nostalgic stroll to the over-spun screenplay graveyard of every Hollywood cliche. Pitiful exploits of corny one-liners, narrow characters and predictable plot twists saturate every moment of Aavatar. It is ultimately mundane in every way beyond the visual stimulus. Expand

It's about long-haired, meat eating Native Americans!! Those big, blue guys are the Lakota Sioux (the Green Berets of the plains) fighting off the evil U.S. Cavalry and even eviler General Custer! Our hero is even an homage (or ripp-off) of the Kevin Costner character from Dances with Wolves. You know, white guy goes native then leads the noble savages to victory against his former countrymen!!! There's also characters (the suit working for the mysterious company that's out to rape the planet) and plot devices from the the greatest science fiction movie franchise ever, Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. And guess who starred in all four - Sigourney Weaver! All is not lost however, because fortunately, sometime in the first three minutes of the film our soon to go blue native hero mentions that back on Earth he and his fellow marines fought for freedom, but now they're actually hired guns working for the Company. Good thing the producers made it clear that these were not U.S. marines on active duty or people like me would of been picketing theaters. In fact, this too is a borrowed motif from Alien and Aliens which also starred former U.S. soldiers now hiring themselves out as mercenaries for the (they learn later) evil Company. Me and boys re-played the WWII dogfight footage inspired gunship vs. Gaia worshipping warriors (with lovely lady shamans too) over and over. Fantastic action and the underdog good guys even win! Wow, talk about tapping into the American sympathies while still condemning America's nature raping, military hardware loving and George Bush inspired mperialistic aspirations. I wish I'd had a chance to invest in the film early on so I could too could of criticized the good ol' U.S. of A. while making a ton of money off its economy too!!!!! Expand

Friday afternoon, a friend and I had gone to see Avatar in RealD 3D at a theatre that was near her house. We enjoyed about 45 minutes of the film when it started to skip... it stopped and started about 3-5 times before it finally froze and shut down. The crowd was outraged and we were told to leave and get "Rain Check" passes at customer service because the system had failed and the movie would not play, it would take 3 hours to fix. So with complete disappointed we got out rain check passes and decided to come back the next day after the problem would be fixed. The first 45 minutes that we did see that day was pretty cool so far, so we definitely wanted to give it another go. As we sat in our seats this afternoon (12/19/09) I sensed that something was going to go wrong, and I could tell my friend had similar intuitions. When the movie was finally about to start, they showed the "please silence your cell phones screen" and then... it stopped.... frozen... the manager came in and told us what we had feared.... it froze... again and it would take forever to fix. We left the theatre utterly pissed and completely done with the stupid theatre. Full of outrage, I expressed my anger with one of the employees. I attempted to get my money back, she of course told me it was impossible, and instead gave us rain check passes and a few extras because of our inconvenience. (sweet? bitter sweet) We decided to go to Imax instead, we figured the massive screen would make the experience all the more amazing. After driving the long way there, parking, and then running many blocks to Imax, out of breath, we were met with an enormous line and a sign that said "Avatar 3D, SOLD OUT" Blast! To cut to the chase, after running back to the parking garage, we went to another theatre owned by the same company as the other theatre that screwed up, and were able to use our passes and get in, and yes that time it worked, no screw ups. After all of this complete heck... IT WAS WELL WORTH IT!! After we left the theatre, we cared little about the shenanigans that went down in attempts to see the movie. We had completely forgotten and were only focused on the movie, and still trying to process it. I've heard complaints about the music and that it wasn't very good... it was great. It was what you'd expect of an epic sci-fi. I've also heard complaints about the story; I didn't see any problem with it either. The only problem I saw was with some of the acting, there were a few actors that didn't seem to do as good of a job as you'd expect for a movie of this magnitude. BUT, the actors in questions were not the focus of the movie and weren't shown often enough to interfere with the experience, thus it wasn't a big problem. The visual effects of this movie were completely amazing. It was hard to believe that most of what we were viewing was all visual effects. The landscapes, the creatures, they were all very crisp and clear, and very realistic. Coupled with the 3D glasses, it almost seemed as if you were there. It is almost hard for me to even describe. The concepts of the movie were not 100% original. A lot of it has been done already to some degree. But the way in which they were presented, to me, seemed totally original. There is something said in the movie that will make you understand more fully the Navi and their existence. Its something that Dr. Augustine said to Mr. Selfridge about the way the planet works and its relationship with the life on the planet. It has something to do with the goddess that the Navi follow. I would say more, but I dont want to spoil it for anyone. Despite the crap that went down before seeing the movie, I enjoyed the experience. I have no regrets, I am absolutely pleased that I went to see it, and glad that I saw it in 3D. It was amazing. Go see it. Now. Expand

Mr. Cameron takes us to a far away place called Pandora. In 3D we see a world unlike anything found on Earth. So far so good. Then the movie completely disintegrates when a Marine Corporal crippled in war becomes one of the aliens {Avatar} or should I say natives. It is unfathomable that Mr. Cameron can conceive a world we've never seen but his storyline is totally lame and predictable. Somewhere we've seen all this before. The Aliens are in fact thinly disguised as native Indians. The big bad capitalistic Americans {General Custer} invade their land for greed, make no attempt at negotiations, and destroy all their beauty. The American military fights with weapons in the year 2154 but nothing is NEW. The Aliens have just bows and arrows. If Dances With Wolves comes to mind yu now know the story. And the Marine Corporal {where was Kevin Costner} whose manta is to do and die switches sides for moral justice. And somehow this pawn is so brilliant that he's portrayed as the second coming of General Rommel {WW II}. No matter how great the special effects, and they are truly great, there's no excuse for such a paper thin plot in which the ending is known 5 minutes into the movie. $299.999 million spent on CGI animation and about a buck fifty for the script. Anyone giving this movie a perfect score of 10 for dialogue that could have been written by a five-year old must have had a lobotomy or checked their brains in at the door. Expand

I saw Titanic in '97 I just finished watching Avatar in boring old 2D. I expected that without the gimmicky glasses the film would lose most of what people are raving about (see Beowulf) but darned if that wasn't an awesome film. I saw Titanic in '97 and though the visuals were incredible, probably the best until Avatar, I felt that the story was too hackneyed to ignore just for the sake of special effects. Avatar has come in for some of the same criticism from some viewers, but though there isn't anything really new in this plot, it's surprisingly well written, at least for a big budget action film. But of course the story only needed to not be annoying, because the real reason everyone is going to see this film is the visuals, which even in plain old 2D are enough to make Lucas's last three space operas look like something out of Ed Wood's filmography. Only Lord of the Rings has come close to creating an entire world with this level of detail, and some of the same folks are on board for this film. But they have really outdone themselves. The only negative reviews I've seen from non-critics have been from conservatives who are offended by a movie that says we shouldn't rape and pillage native peoples and pristine environments. I'm not sure that's really a defensible position, so no comment there :) Expand

Visuals make up for missing story, but engaged me only for about 1/2 movie. Then i got bored and little logical errors ruined reality feeling of the movie - e.g. there exists no real communication link between human and avatar - they are connected by magic in otherwise technoworld, why someone makes giant earthmoving machine with cameras that can be taken off with a rock, why early 21st century technology in a distant future, and so on. Last 20 minutes of fighting, killing and dying got me engaged again. Luckily we do not need to kill anybody for real in Colloseum these days - computer graphics are good enough, but basic joy of seeing bad guy killed are ageless. There are two new 'props' i have not yet seen in the movie - universal man-animal interface the natives use to connect with various living things and biological network storage where navi's upload their deceased for eternal storage :) Unfortunately what these things could mean for humanity does concern Cameron not. These are props to make scene. This is not the movie i will keep at home and watch again. Expand

Let's face it, a truly original idea is nearly impossible to find, so saying Avatar is not that original is not that big of a slam. Another possible flaw is the 3D. It works, as far the effect, but is paying an extra few dollars to see it, there is no sense it added that much to the movie. This dream that 3D will make you feel like you are in the movie is not a reality here. The reality is if you want to feel like you are in the movie is for a technology to be developed the uses virtual reality glasses that allow you to have 360 3D views. Bottom line, if you want to see a good action/sci-fi movie, this is a great choice. Just don't expect the ultimate movie. Expect to see an above average movie. A score of 4/10 represents what is now at the start of 2010; a mediocre film which showcases current computer graphics technology at its peak. In a few years this technology will be outdated and it is my belief that the film will be mostly forgotten. The negative aspects would be predictable, condescending, rascist, sexist and mislabelled as science fiction. Just because space ships and other planets are involved does not make a movie SciFi ! There is another category known as "Space Opera" that would arguably better label this film. There is little in the way of any SCIENCE as opposed to a whopping slice of FICTION. Unobtainium (snicker) is only valuable because the movie says so alluding to it as an "energy source". (So its coal bloated up with hydrogen to make it float, imaginative but not even vaguely science.) Why would a Mech require a big knife (tip of the hat to Crocodile Dundee?). How can a "floating mountain" discharge a sizable waterfall in a climate where apparently it never rains (perhaps Mother Gaia doesn't let it rain when bigshot liberals are filming movies). Hammerhead rhino's, six legged horse's and cottonwood seeds floating about (does anyone on super wonder planet have allergies?). My girlfriend and I, both SciFi aficiandos just watched a film called "Pandorum" which the critics largely destroyed. While hardly perfect it was a Darfur Tower in stature to "Avatars" small rooming house somewhere in the west eighties. Expand

I'll admit that the panache with which the visuals are delivered is worth at least one or two whole points. Cameron's pacing is very good, and the film's action scenes are some of the best filmed in the decade. Still, I'll admit that the panache with which the visuals are delivered is worth at least one or two whole points. Cameron's pacing is very good, and the film's action scenes are some of the best filmed in the decade. Still, it's not a groundbreaking film, I don't think, and the 3D was distracting, fuzzy, and ineffective. The storyline could have been great, but instead was destroyed by a limp script (the "Kansas" lines was really not needed), an overweening self-importance, and clumsy themes that really do become offensive. Cameron may not have meant this, but the film too strenuously scorned everything that is uniquely human. He tried to make us weep when trees are knocked over, but cheer when Americans are blown up. The "noble savage" plot wears thin with such a treatment, and I wondered at how incurious the Na'vi seemed. No character was genuinely interesting, and despite the melodrama, there was little to no emotion invested in the story. By the big end battle I just didn't care who won or not -- although I DID care what cool stunts would be shown next. See? So, the overall experience is fun and sparkly, as long as you can ignore the weak, sometimes-offensive message. Expand

Then again, it as produced by the same person who done Titanic, which was a very good movie. This movie, however, can be reviewed just like a video game: good graphics, bad gameplay. First half of the movie is an ultimate bore-fest, having almost nothing close to canon (JC, why did you allow "unobtanium?") . Second half is where everything is taken up a few notches, giving some very good fight scenes and a Star Wars-esque battlefield. It's pure nostalgia for the whole movie, and I like that. However, the reason why I give it a 7 is the matter of why I watched it in 3d. 3d is a fad, through and through, and this movie proves it. Ironically, it was the human metals in the first half that made everything look like a fake motion blur. For some reason, I really couldn't watch the movie because of this, and, if I watched this in 2d, it MIGHT have been a good 7.3 movie. Actual rating: 6.5 (bonus points to second half of movie). Even the so called professional critics are love it or hate it. The most astute comment I read was (to paraphrase) "all you who have voted this movie a "10" will look back on it in 5 years will wonder what they ever saw in it." Our world (EARTH to you reviewers who are a little caught up in the box of Pandora) is so much more complex than Corporations = Bad, Natives =Good, Military = Bad, Environmentalists = Good. This movie had no depth of story or character, and nary a degree of deviation in the Disneyish plot from start to finish. As for the people commenting that they wish to live on Pandora I am truly speechless. After 2.5 hrs of staring at it in dark glasses, in all it's 3D glory, I was pretty bored. There are just so many flaws from a scientific point of vew, from a military strategy point of view, from a linguistic point of view. I can't believe Mr. Cameron thinks so little of the intelligence of his audience that he has floating mountains and named things "home tree", "tree of souls", and "UNOBTAINIUM". My brain started to bleed on that one, and no one even snickered in the theater I was in...I was shocked!!!. My other fear is that it seems in our current world, if you criticize this movie and it's "story" or "message", it must mean that you are against environmentalism and must be some war monger or corporate fat cat. There is simply no humour, no story and fairly bad acting..... (Was I the only one who wondered why the tough parapalegic marine became Australian during some voice overs? ) Only later I looked up who Sam W. was and found out he was Australian. Maybe a late overdub or two was done and the vocal coach was unavailable. You would think the director of the 2 highest grossing movies of all time would catch something like that!!!...He was probably too busy adding a few more vines or lumenescent plants to a scene. Double checking the dialogue and quality of acting just gets in the way when you are busy! The reason I gave a 2 rating over a zero is to recognize all the hard work of the CGI people who made a beautiful visual and who will never see 1/100,000th of the money that Mr. Cameron will take home. So they get a 2/2 for their part and Mr. Cameron gets 0 for 8 for his contribution to filmaking. Thank you for reading Expand

The characters are memorable along with the battle sequences in the film with its emotional sides. This movie with all its overrated qualities, is still a ground breaking defining CGi movie. Expand

Overrated, terrible and a kind of copycat film. Not really stunning 3D visual effects or good acting. Somehow it still was horrible.

A mind-bending spectacle.....as close as I will ever come to space travel and witnessing evolution on another world. Cameron's imagination is pure genius. We were privileged to see it 3D in Imax, and will see it again.

Amazing special effects. Nothing more. Plot is silly, childish, typical save the earth-american-imperialists bs. The overt lines about Iraq were laughable, does Cameron think us stupid? Is it that he believes average folk cannot connect his Amazing special effects. Nothing more. Plot is silly, childish, typical save the earth-american-imperialists bs. Or is it just that he is an engineer, not a storyteller? Amazing special FX, nothing more. See it in 3D, then forget about it, I certainly did. Expand

What makes this silly film credible are the special effects. Without the "state of the art" CGI revolution, this movie is ,basically, a live-action version of Disney's Pocahontas. Hardly the best picture of the year. most innovative? What makes this silly film credible are the special effects. Yeah it's exactly like you expect. Visually stunning, incredibly lame and manipulative story line and ultimately just okay. I'll probably never see it again, but it was good to see it in a theater, in 3d. The 3d aspect was amazing, Yeah it's exactly like you expect. Visually stunning, incredibly lame and manipulative story line and ultimately just okay. I'll probably never see it again, but it was good to see it in a theater, in 3d. The 3d aspect was amazing, but the melodrama and predictability was tough to sit through sometimes. Also the New Age + Native American conceit just to blow the sh*t out of them was a little hard to swallow. No plot twists. No story. Nothing surprising besides the visuals. Also, the music, it sucked so hard I could barely stand it. Worst score ever. Expand
