Visually it looked animated and false, at no point was i suckered into feeling it was real. CGI when its done right is seemless and un-noticedable Unfortunately Avatar just drowns you in it, never giving your mind a chance to accept it as real. Riddled with movie cliches (I actually found myself shouting at sigourney weaver as she calmly proclaims that a bullet in her stomach will ruin her day) poor characters and a story thats been done far better (dances with wolves) this film just left me feeling like I'd wasted 3hrs watching it. Seriously not all that it was cracked up to be, the story was drawn out too long to then just rush the action seen in one last ditch attempt to pull the audience in. Overall, nothing to be rated as a top movie of all time.

The storytelling is terrible, the characterization is terrible, the dialogue is PAINFULLY BAD. For gods sakes, the point of the plot is to 'obtain' an element called "unobtainium". seriously mr. cameron, could you be less imaginative? a monkey in front of a typewriter could have punched something smarter out in an hour. It seems that the storytelling was put on the backburner compared to the special effects and 3d technology that nobody but the people in the center of the movie theatre can fully experience. It is a waste of money to pay for the 3d romp, and is even less of a value to see it in 2d. I seems that avatar failed to give justice to the 11 year old script treatment, which i found to be on the level of lord of the rings book series compared to the abomination that was made of the final script. This was one of the two the instances that mr. cameron's vision could not be fufilled in the movie next to the abomination that was True Lies. My closing thoughts are that i hope that the sequel could be given more priority on story. Expand

It felt more like a retold western set in a futuristic setting than a sci-fi epic. In James Cameron's vision mankind - surprise, surprise - want to harvest a distant planet of it's valuable materials with little regard for the planet's inhabitants which paints the long and cliché story driven film that this is: Eco warriors fighting against evil invaders who would sooner destroy the planet than look for an alternative mining site. Dialogue was good, mostly, but in parts seemed a bit off and awkward, especially when you remember that the main character was a human controlling an alien body from a nearby outpost. Visually the film is quite impressive but not not a huge step over what we haven't already seen in other CGI movies over the past ten years. Overall it's an "okay" movie. Not the best and certainly not the "greatest adventure of all time", if you'd even deem it in the slightest bit of an adventure, but worth seeing if you've nothing else on your list of movies to rent. For any person living in the eastern part of the United States, taking that long trek to the local movie theater probably was the last thing on your mind, while the thoughts of hot chocolate, and Avatar: Where Can I Get One of Those? For any person living in the eastern part of the United States, taking that long trek to the local movie theater probably was the last thing on your mind, while the thoughts of hot chocolate, and watching the snow was a higher priority. Yet even with the weather arduously not helping, Avatar starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, still flashed onto to silver screen with something to prove. For anyone walking into this movie without any prior knowledge other than primetime trailers, they will be dazed and thrilled with the kaleidoscopic world brought from the reaches of the universe. Which is why it becomes no surprise to hear that Director James Cameron had been waiting to produce this movie for over fifteen years, only being stopped by CGI and limitations. However, once a $500 million budget was procured and graphics were to his visionary standard, everything was golden. And golden it was. Right from first ten minutes you get the essential story: Worthington was a Jarhead that was hurt, had a brother that died and got the chance to take his place on a science expedition on Pandora, a Earth-type moon with natural inhabitants, the Navi that are not happy with what humans are doing. From there the stage is set to meet the rest of the cast, and learn that Worthington job is to run an Avatar, a human-made version of the Navi to help learn their culture and get to know them better. However there is a hitch in the scientific plans in the form of Stephen Langs character, the officer in charge of the defense and mining of an important ore on Pandora. Langs only goal is to remove the Navi so that they can mine the hell out of the planet. Thus it is the fate of Worthingtons character to be stuck in the middle, battling with his conscious. The plot flows effortlessly between a steady dose of character development, action, and humor, which guarantees that most will be enthralled with the world presented. Worthingtons character Jake Sully, who has always been a solider, keeps the motto of speak only when it really counts. This makes him a good pair along Weavers character Grace, who is the lead scientist for the Avatar program. Cameron takes a lot of what made Weavers character amazing from Aliens and brought it back here, keeping her snarky and to the point. Yet the large selling point for the mammoth was its CGI and how they incorporated it. Im not going to try and sugarcoat it here; theres a lot. About 80% of this movie is based purely on the computer renditions of the actors while they are scurrying around out in the dense tropical forests of Pandora. And while the concept of it caused a bit of a ruckus before opening, they pulled it off flawlessly. Everything from the luminescent trees to the exotic creatures in this utopian world looked and fit perfectly into place. Whats more is that the facial and body structures of each character really made you feel like they were meant to exist. Especially watching Saldanas character Neytiri and how each movement in her face looked perfectly natural is an accomplishment. In fact, in most of the Navi, you could see almost the exact actor or actress behind their characters eyes, and know that they in fact were doing those exact movements. Cameron does an amazing job bringing you a masterful story, yet at times he almost loses both himself and the viewer in what he was talking about. The fanciful plants and pictures everywhere, the almost Bay-ish humor that would spring up on occasion, (which I feel is at no fault to Cameron, rather a ploy to get younger viewers more involved) you could have the potential to forget what Cameron is trying to get across in this episodic fantasy; and thats everyone and everything has a life. You observe as the Navi savor every twig, every leaf, pray to every kill they hunt for food, never enjoying what they do. It is a concept that stems from the 90s, yet has followed Cameron and has become a bigger part of todays world, with the threats of global warming and movies like The Inconvenient Truth. While Camerons intent was not to preach and to bring about the age of utopian society with nature, he walk back to the screen with a carpet of glowing moss under his feet, and nobody heard him coming. Maybe once, just once, has "I see you" worked as an effective bit of movie dialogue, and the moment when Neyriti(Zoe Saldana) tells Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) that, well, she sees him, isn't it. The soul mining of this Na'vi Maybe once, just once, has "I see you" worked as an effective bit of movie dialogue, and the moment when Neyriti(Zoe Saldana) tells Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) that, well, she sees him, isn't it. The soul mining of this Na'vi hottie performed upon this former marine is pure romantic pap, but "I see you" could have transcended its pedestrian connotations, had Jake's loyalties been more vacillating. A nice guy from the start, "Avatar" could have distinguished itself from "Dances with Wolves" comparisons by making Runs Like Manute Bol less compassionate and open-minded than the Kevin Costner character. Confined to a wheelchair, Jake's shoot to kill days are over, but that doesn't mean his warring mentality needed to be over too. The human infiltration into the Na'vi world needed just one benevolent presence(the scientist played by Sigourney Weaver), not two. After all, Jake is on a science-based detail, by default. If it wasn't for his accident, he'd be carrying a gun, and dancing with money. The tepid love story gains in power only if Neyriti was employed as the catalyst for Jake's transformation into a full-blooded Na'vi. But since he comes to Pandora without a shred of prejudicial feelings toward the planet's indigenous population, our protagonist has no character arc. Turning Na'vi-nese becomes inevitable, becomes ho-hum. It's probably the main reason why the story can't keep up with the special effects. The two sides, military and science, are too black and white, in terms of moralistic complexity. When Neyriti tells Jake that she sees him, the meaning is way too literal. (Jake is a human being.) "I see you" could have been issued as a challenge to be good, in the name of interspecies love. (For the record: "I see you" worked beautifully in Wayne Wang's "The Joy Luck Club"). Expand

So many at this point, that it is extremely rare that I experience any sense of awe or wonder at a film. "Avatar" stepped in and changed that for me in a tremendous way. If you're expecting a brand-new, never before seen tale, you've come to the wrong movie. The story and formula are tried and true, as both James Cameron and most other prominent directors in Hollywood well know. Where this movie steps out of that mold, is in the fantastic world that James and crew have created. The sea, land, sky, and life on display here are like nothing you've seen before, and yet, are so familiar that you slide right into the feel of the place like an old pair of jeans. As for story, learning, loving, betrayal, and redemption are all on display and used to competent effect. Where this movie really shines, however, is in three dimensions. I have yet to see a movie that uses the 3D so intelligently. Used here, 3D truly puts you inside the spaces of this film, and the experience is made all the better for it. As for the technology of the creatures, plants, and the blue-skinned, three-fingered Na'Vi, every one in Hollywood should sit up and take notice. There has been nothing yet to compare with the realism of everything on display. Gollum was long the benchmark by which CG performances were measured, but in my world, this is no longer the case. The Na'Vi, in terms of movement and emotion, are the most convincing creation ever to come out of a silicon chip. When they smile, you believe it. When they cry, you feel their pain. I stand up and salute James Cameron and all the brilliant computer artists who came together with technology to create an utterly believable world, along with the plants, animals and people who inhabit it. Coming back down to earth, I must say this will not go down as the greatest movie ever made. It has it's flaws. If you've seen a James Cameron film before, you probably know what to expect in terms of story, and I can't say that this will "change the way" we watch movies forever. What I can say is this. For the sheer experience of it, for the spectacle, for the awe and wonder, this is the best film on the big screen today. Expand

This movie was so great, only a few things were missing, which stopped me from giving it a 10. First thing is that at parts the movie felt slow paced, most parts the pace was perfect but a few parts here and there the pace was a bit slow. Also, I came and watched this movie not just to enjoy myself but also get educated about the world that Cameroon has created, but I was disappointed that I did not learn anything about the world, everything was just shown to you, you were never told any fascinating information, like why is there such a big tree sticking out of the ground+why do many of the Navi tribes live in it (maybe it is just a really large tree and its a rare species and the navi prefer living in it because it offers protection, but nor all Navis live in it because they are rare trees and not ever tribe can find one, or the answer could be more complicated than that), why are those mountains floating, why have certain creatures adapted in certain ways, why are the Navis so similar to humans, etc. Another problem was that there were really 2 events in the whole movie, the main character learning the ways of Navi and a big battle. The battle took up about 15-20% of the movie, while learning took up over 65% of the movie, while another 15+% of the movie was taken up by other things. Every single part that felt slow paced was in the learning section, they could have cut this down to a little over half of what it actually was and it would have made the movies pace perfect and they could have spent the extra time to explain the movie. Now there are few movies out there that can explain a whole universe in a single movie, a few examples are Lord of the Rings and Matrix (even though these 2 movies explained a lot of the universe in sequels most of it was explained in the original movie). I expected Cameroon to be able to do this since he is such a great director and the movie was so damn long but I was disappointed. But I am sure that the sequel (already in the talks) will explain the universe in detail to us which will make the first movie even more enjoyable to think about and watch. Thanks for reading. Expand

Basically, it is "Dances with Wolves" meets "Starship Troopers". The movie is really dumb and the only thing that differs it from other sci-fi movies with no plot and lots of CGI, is the quantity and quality of CGI (motion capture and what not). Yes, Pandora looks awesome and real at the same time, it feels like a breathing, living world. However, all this magic is pointless as everything else is just too obvious and one-dimensional. Pandora could easily be the Amazon jungle, the big bad corporation could use Caterpillars instead of their mechs and it would still be the same simplistic story. The CGI serve no purpose apart from adding the oooh factor. "Avatar" is nowhere near "King Kong" or "The Jurassic Park", as in those movies the special effects were justified - to a degree they are what MADE the plot. Oh, and the last thing. There's no point watching the movie in the so-called 3D. Perhaps in a digital Imax cinema it looks spectacular, but in a "regular" cinema, the 3D version looks same as the 2D, only darker (due to glasses). Expand

I cannot understand how so many reviewers here freely admitted its lack of proper story and yet still sang its praises astounds me. Is this honestly the future of cinema? If so, I am deeply disappointed. You simply cannot have a good movie with a cliche, simple, lifeless story- not even a plot twist! You cannot have a movie designed to be heavily moralistic where one can't even muster up sympathy of the protagonists! This is the worst part of the movie. The blue people are simply unlikable- stupid and arrogant. The fact that Cameron is playing theses people up as heavily superior doesn't help at all. Visual effects are nice and all - no denying that. But while effects alone can make for a nice short viewing experience, but not for a movie. The worst part of this is that inevitably, people disliking this movie will be labeled as anti-environmentalists, being scared of the film's heavy-handed message because it 'scares them' or 'hits too close to home'. Having a good message is not enough to make a good movie. Especially if delivered in such a bland way as Cameron does. He's a joke of a director, and 'Avatar' is terrible. I sincerely hope that it does not influence all movies to come, and that great cinema will not be dead. Expand

Maybe because It was new then or maybe because I could actually focus on what I wanted to. I admit I am no fan of the new 3D gimmick... Long review short. There were a few interesting concepts, like a consciousness arising out of a network comparable to the human brain, (albeit of trees), coevolution creating a world full of closely interacting species, with a physical link instead of behavioral mostly, and the idea that love may be dependent not on species so much as comparable mental capacity once bodies are a thing of the past or almost so. Sadly none of these were developed and the last I think wasn't even thought of by the film-maker. It was pretty but it was hollow. Trust the reviews not the numbers pasted on them. I mean great on a level that would have made this film iconic. Instead, it pandered and borrowed, and used every trick it could to distract us from the fact that the story has been told before. In fact, it was told recently in The Last Samurai, and less recently in Dances with Wolves. That is the films major flaw. There are minor ones as well. If ever there was a film that deserved a magnificent, soaring, original John Williams score that people would instantly recognize, this was it. Something along the lines of Star Wars, Superman, Raiders or Jaws. Instead we get an ignominious James Horner piece overflowing with his tiresome use of choirs and way too much borrowing from his previous scores. I can't imagine he is happy with this effort after creating FAR better music for films like Titanic, Braveheart, The Land Before Time, Willow, Aliens, Glory and probably his best work, Star Trek II. In my opinion, Hans Zimmer would have been the logical choice, considering the rip he's been on lately. At the very least, they should have given Alan Silvestri a shot. A few of the other minor flaws... Too many obvious plot devices (fog that prevents instruments from working, A tree that can conveniently transfer souls from useless human bodies to perfect alien bodies, etc) Too much overt storytelling. Can't you let the audience come to the conclusion that everything is "connected." Why did we have to have it explained to us? Some minor stupidity, like machine guns that can't hit much of anything. In fact, why couldn't they have simply used their gigantic bulldozer to destroy the tree at the end? Floating mountains? How? Anyway, I was entertained enough by the visuals to allow enough of these gripes to slip by without feeling the movie had been spoiled. It's just frustrating at how often films like this only need a little more oversight to avoid these painful flaws. Expand

Without explaining the plot the film was overall a masterful film which overcomes the thought of it being a traditional film. The film presents an alternate form of conquest when mankind had lost it's passion and respect, demonstrated in how the main characters and the military base they work at appears in a monotone colour scheme of dark greys and greens while the surrounding planet is vibrant in its colour. Acting wise the film had a mixed result. Sigourney Weaver came off as the best in the film with every line she said being sarcastic or semi-humor. Michelle Rodriguez on the other hand, while good in her role, served the basic purpose of being eye-candy. Sam Worthington was mixed, while he did good at delivering his lines, his narrations at parts in the film felt stiff. The special effects worked very well, after a while they become part of the movie and you forget that it is CGI. While the film was overall well-done their were faults. For the first half the film is confusing and does not seem like it will improve. it feels annoying, but improves after the main character is lost in the forest. Some parts such as the general not dying when he should die feels like the editor should have fixed this. Another problem, not related to the film was the 3D process. It used a 1980's 3D process which involved clear stripe 3D glasses and it was not needed for this film. The film has around two to three moments where the effect works, but the whole movie is in 3D so during most of the film it becomes an annoying problem, it would have been better if they has simply not released a 3D version. In the end while these faults are prevalent, the film bypasses most of these faults, expect the 3D faults, and works as an excellently written and visually beautiful film. Expand

I had the same problem with this movie as I did with "9". The visuals are stimulating, but everything else nearly falls flat. The first half of the film was engaging and entertaining, while the second half went on much too long. This I had the same problem with this movie as I did with "9". This isn't to say "Avatar" is a bad movie... At it's worst moments it's just below mediocre. It's just that with such a huge budget, I wish they had focused more time on the story rather than the effects. Expand

Fantastic visuals but boring boring boring! It was brutal trying to get through this movie. I left the cinema half way through to have a break for 15 minutes. I left the cinema half way through to have a break for 15 minutes. Once the awe of the 3D visuals had subsided, then all was left was the storyline, and it was a boring, cliche one at that. The 5/10 rating is purely for the visuals. If this movie was 2D only, I'd give it a 1. Expand

Nice animation. Nothing else. Empty, banal, boring. Story is trite, characters lack of any complexity or psychological depth. Would you compare it with... Star Wars? Or Star Trek? Or Lord of the Rings?
