Like I don't know what the big deal is here with this movie. It's OK, but how is it a billion-dollar mega-hit like this? Story is so-so, and visuals are full of blue-tone CGI, which is very 1997, and very video-game-looking.

Avatar has great visuals but in total the movie has an awful story and the CGI can only give the movie so much. Avatar is overrated and is a mixed bag leaning negatively.

Quality: 1080p SDR [Bluray]

The protagonist is a plank of wood with no charm or charisma. The villains are cartoonish, and the other characters are pretty one dimensional. The Navii are very manipulatively deliberately designed to deceive the audience into liking them. Doubt people would've cared if they looked like the Aliens from District 9.
But my biggest complaint is that the story is unoriginal and unimaginative. It takes elements from Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas and FernGully without doing anything new or putting a different take on it. It's just a generic story we've seen many times before with a big high budget flashy paint job put over it.

People say it’s a timeless masterpiece, but this is false, if you analyze any masterpiece, you can find substance and originality, as well as personality and charm, this is just fernguly and Pocahontas with 7ft blue men waving their fingers in the audience’s faces screaming “humans bad!!”.

Another James Cameron movie that is more about the CGI than any kind of decent story.

There is some genuine moments that makes you sit back and wonder how it would feel like to be in that characters shoes but the story ruins it for me. It is one of those movies you don't watch for the story I guess. I just do not understand why it is SO POPULAR. I get its very pretty and all and I personally loved it the first time I saw it. For one, the sequel is coming soon. But also, this movie gets a weird amount of hate. The criticism is that the writing and dialogue is bad and that the movie is a rip off of Pocahontas and other films like it. I would argue that themes are recycled throughout Hollywood all the time, and Avatar does it in a very unique way that adds substance and depth to the story. What made Avatar so great was obviously the action, the visuals, the art design and the special effects. And you can call the plot a rip off all you want, but I thought it was awesome. I think anytime you use metaphors for real world problems, some people get mad and offended. That being said, I do think this film has weaknesses. I do agree some of the dialogue is mediocre. Also, I don't think Sam Worthington did a very good job as Jake Sully. But overall its one my favorite films, and I can't wait for the sequel. The haters can keep hating. Expand

This was the second longest movie i've ever been to, and the most drawn out. the first 2 hours are soooooo boring i almost fell asleep, if it were not for the bright flashy bioluminescence of the plants i probably would have. These first hours were like watching the animal planet or discovery channel, just sit back and look at a bunch of plants. however, every once and a while, there is a cool plant that catches your attention. the cat na'vi people are very strange, and distracted from the movie. everything else was so different and fairy tale like, then they use blue human people with tails, and cat ears. so unoriginal!!!! there are tons of blue alien races. onto the plot: reminded me of one of those movies on the sci fi channel, your macho army commander gone mad with power, an unethical greedy ceo behind it all, nerdy scientists that try to stop army guy and a marine that wants to save the day. the dialogue was horrendous, i could predict every word that was going to come out of their mouthes...and the dry humor was terrible, the retarded kid in the theater that laughed at the jokes and come-backs did not help either. the plot can be guessed when sully teams up with army commander guy (see how bad this is? i saw the movie today and dont even know their names...) to gather info on the cat people. i will not reveal any spoilers, but the plot was very stereotypical. the last 30 minutes, the epic battle scene, was the best part and saving grace of the movie. i dont think the 2 hours of plants was worth 30 mins of action though. in conclusion this review was not meant to discourage you from seeing it, by all means go see it for the animation and try to help james cameron make some of his investment back, but buy a large tub of popcorn and drink, you will need it and may find it more interesting than the movie. The movie Avatar is basically an overly long, expensive B-movie. The plot is not just simplistic and cliche, but lazy even... apparently audiences won't realize it's mean to bomb the holy tree unless a "daisy cutter" is involved. The movie is littered with cheap references like that, presumably to curry favor with left-wing critics who otherwise would admit the story is awful. So far as the special effects: it really should not enhance the rating in my view because they are only impressive in comparison to today's standards. In 10 years, Avatar won't look like anything special, and the movie will gradually fade into obscurity. Expand

Not ever did I want to say anything negative about a James Cameron film, but that's where this is going. I want to start off by saying that I did not find the effects as everyone else, maybe it's because CGI with detail and human emotion isn't such a big deal anymore. I mean we all knew it was heading this way, but this is not CGI without humans, this was mo-cap and its obvious and it should be mo-cap to achieve the Uncanny Valley. All in all we all play video games now and this was not that impressive in a world filled with CGI. Enough about the effects however, the 3D was very well done in the use of depth and being tolerable for two and a half hours, although nothing mind blowing like debris flying at you. Movie theaters still have not achieved the theme park 3D that everyone really wants to see. Now this is where the biggest knock comes and I realize that people are suckers for a good love story, but do you remember Fern Gully? Yup the animated Fox film in the '90's about the rainforrest and fairies, now imagine the fairies being 12 foot blue Native Americans and Sam Worthington is the shrunken guy that realizes that teraing doen the rainforrest is bad. Hmm....ok lets take that story and add millions more dollars to it and make it a sci-fi opus (which it isn't) and tell everyone that they've never seen anything like this. I have and I want my money back. Expand

I saw the 3D version of this film, and I can say it's worth it for the 3D version. Too many 3D films destroy their believability by making things "jump" out of the screen at you -- "WOW it's 3D!". This film does not do that. 3D is used as a tool to make the action more real -- not less. Expect incredible visuals -- but don't expect much on story from Avatar. Expand

I applaud the creators and all who put this film together as it is a masterpiece of cinema. Yes, there are some cliches that can be traced back to stuff done in other films, but seriously - what "hasn't" been done before ? Yes, there was the age old cowboys/indians type of conflict - but it is still relevant and definitely part of our human nature - so it is absolutely valid as a plot. And, some on here said the acting was terrible, and that there was no character development - I can't understand those comments - as this film had just the right blend of development that was needed to tell the story. One last comment - Zoe Saldana is hot as Uhura and also as a NaVi - I'd do them both. Expand

It has a good message, but I fear that this plight was drowned out by loud explosions and glossed over with fancy computers. Also I did not like how in the first six minutes of the film I could tell who the bad guys were. It would have created a much more interesting conflict had the lines between good and evil been blurred as they so often are in real life. We know off the bat that the humans are selfish pigs who are occupying the planet Pandora for nothing more than a monetary greed. Over all I fear this film's quality has been blown out of proportion and the ratings skewed because James Cameron created some new fancy machine that helps us confuse great CGI with great story. This movie will remain in my memory for a long time. (The fact that I wouldn't mind watching this on a regular basis would help keep it fresh in my memory). I have seen this movie twice, the first time being in 2D. I traveled 45 minutes in bad snow to see it in 3D, but was ultimately disappointed. Not due to the movie but the fact that the 3D did not enhance the movie as much as I would have liked. This could be because I didn't drive the extra miles to an IMAX theater. I really don't think that 3D is needed to express the new world that Cameron creates. Even in 2D, I was amazed by the new scenery and visual artistry that was presented. I thought that all actors/actresses in the movie offered solid performances. However, at times Sam Worthington (Jake Sully) was a little hard to understand in his dialogue. As for plot, the movie gives everyone something to enjoy and follow along with. The plot is well developed and even gives the action junkies something to look at with the final battle scene. Even I was enthralled with the elements of romance that were presented. As I put it to a friend, "There is a great plot, great action, and a sprinkling of romance." In conclusion, I feel that it would be likened to a felony to not see this movie. James Cameron creates a beautiful new world as well as a beautiful well-developed plot. I would have given it a higher rating but the story was really weak, and it was a bit too heavy on the tree-hugging aspect (Capitalism, man, & the military are evil and nature and the environment are to be untouched). I'm sure all the climate-change (formally global warming) nuts will give this movie a 10, and thats ok, It's visuals and action alone did not merit a 10 for me. There was never any explanation why the material in "Pandora" was so important to the military other than it was worth alot of money so the core of the story was never explained. The action and visuals were great, I really liked all of the action sequence's, stunning special effects, and creativity of the "Pandora" world. A bit too drawn Sigh....well I certainly had high hopes for the movie and I'm glad to say it wasn't that disappointing. While it does have an unoriginal story, the new themes of the Navi (indians basically) are interesting enough. A bit too drawn out but still enjoyable with suprisingly almost no humor. I would probably send my rating down around the 5 area had I not seen it in 3-D, since you had a sense that Cameron wanted to use it for a way to enhance the movie and not just be eye candy I'll give me credit for that. Needless to say the only thing keeping the movie up this high of a rating is the use of 3-D, hopefully we can now see improvements upon dialouge, acting, pacing, and no cheesy love story for the sequel to possibly get the score it deserves.
