Unoriginal story - so what? Even classical greek dramas were new cookings of old themes. I have started pondering what the sequels will show us... I have some ideas! Until then I will simply have to wait with trepidation.

Okay everyone. The story and the characters were not the greatest ever. But for everyone who thinks that James Cameron should have put in the extra work to come up with a sweeping and epic story that captures the film better than this one i Okay everyone. The story and the characters were not the greatest ever. But for everyone who thinks that James Cameron should have put in the extra work to come up with a sweeping and epic story that captures the film better than this one i would like to see them direct such a monumental film with technology that doesn't exist yet and still have time for. The fact is, the screenplay is realistic. As in what people would actually say if they were in that situation. People don't usually come up with stunning new lines in real life, they use old fashioned to the point ones and that is what he has done. Visually the film is incredible. Easily one of the best looking and most imaginative films ever. The world of Pandora is as life like as the world around us and I left my second viewing even more immersed than the first. All the characters perks and expressions, all the actions and the significance. All the scenery and stunning camera work (a third of a second was put into a close up but otherwise everything was pure gold) and some of the most sweeping distance shots ever make the planet seem completely real. Like Cameron took the six year flight there, filmed it and then flew six back to release it here. No it's not as good as Titanic, although the 3D is used better than any other film to date. In consensus it lacks the sheer drama and execution Titanic had. But like i said i sure couldn't do any better. Yeah a better and more original story would have been good but under the circumstances a person can't really complain. Go and see this movie. It is easily my favorite film of the year and one of the best i've ever seen.… Expand

First off let me say Wow!!! I'll never look at a movie the same way, The immersion into the world of Pandora was amazing, I felt like I was looking through a window throughout the whole movie. That being said if i'd known I was First off let me say Wow!!! That being said if i'd known I was going to see a sci-fi version of Pocahontas I probably would have said no thanks. Guy goes to new world, meets a savage, learns their ways, forbidden love blah blah blah.. the story was weak ,( heck the hero even shares the same initials John Smith Jake Sully. The small difference is instead of Pocahontas heading to london we find the roles reversed as Jake stays with the savages. The movie is a visual masterpiece, the "original story" not so original.… Expand

It had a magic and sense of wonder and beauty similar to the feeling when you first see the undersea world in "Finding Nemo". So, while the plot is simple and the dialog simplistic it offers a sense of wonder and excitement like the original "Star Wars". Worth seeing and experiencing!… Expand

I hated the first trailer. In it you could see what a piece of crap this was going to be: a version of dances with wolves recreated in a video game. Then I went to see the movie. I was biased. I wanted to hate it. Within one hour I had I hated the first trailer. In it you could see what a piece of crap this was going to be: a version of dances with wolves recreated in a video game. Then I went to see the movie. I was biased. I wanted to hate it. Within one hour I had forgotten everything I knew. The design of the blue people just vanished as their hopes, dreams and philosophy took first stage. The trite story became fresh and relatable. And although you can predict the ending before the movie even starts, I couldn't help clapping. I can certainly understand people who didn't like this movie. But, boy, am I glad I was able to enjoy it. I was definitely one of the most emotionally intense, awe inspiring cinematic experiences of my life. If you haven't seen it, give it a chance in IMAX 3D. If you don't like it, you will have lost some 10 bucks and two and a half hours of your time. If you do like it, like me, you will have gained one of the most wonderful experiences you can get at the movies. I think it is a great bet.… Expand

The love story between Jake and a female inhabitant of Pandora never has any depth or feeling, nor does the rest of the movie which is stretched out to an excruciating 2 hours and 40 minutes, presumably so Cameron can show off as much of his groundbreaking visuals as possible. I saw this film in 3D 6 hours ago...and it is still in my head. I cannot...do not want to...break free. I have never felt so involved, so immersed in such a story. This movie is ridiculously good. You get immediately sucked in with the visuals (especially so in 3D) and stay locked in for the story, character development, and action of the movie. Highly recommended.

Let me set the record straight. The movie wasn't Shawshank Redemption, so I give it a 9. I was, of course, comparing plots relatively speaking. But, the plot was pretty good science fiction overall. Best special effects ever. Made the clone troopers movements look like 1st generation Star Wars figures. Beyond the special effects there is not much there. Poor acting due to poor script. This was one of the most AMAZING films I've ever seen, the story had its ups and downs, but what really pulled through was the CGI (graphics). Incredible, it sent goosebumbs down my spine. All senses were awoken!

Too bad the choreography is atypical contemporary Hollywood action movie, with quick cuts that make it impossible to truly absorb yourself in the detailed world of Pandora. i can't even remember the last time i saw a movie this good, that it left me i awe as i left the cinema, the last film to do that was probably batman the dark knight. Definately not worth the 80 or 8.4 that people are giving it. The story is so formulaic and so over the top, as well as predictable. That this is just not the best picture. Although the story may not have been "new and innovative," it was just involving enough to make you care about the characters. Nothing is without flaws, but this is the Wizard of Oz of the year, a full-body experience that I haven't experienced in a movie in my 47 years. Bravo! P.S. Simply put, this movie is amazing! I watched it with 3d glasses and there were scenes that made me smile uncontrollably, it was that beautiful. It was an excellent film. I haven't been so drawn in since i've seen The Lord of The Rings. unfortunately there is evidence of bias. However, because of that movie, i'm routing for James Cameron's ideas. Also, I thought It was an excellent film. Whatever grievances the critics had about the Political and Philosophical themes and/or dialogue/character development of "Avatar", the visual spectacle, alone, is able to silence all the naysayers. The storyline may be somewhat pedestrian but in my lifetime I have finally viewed a film that truly celebrates the indigenous culture as the true hero of this epic. let me just say this: the only thing transformers 2 had going for it was the visuals. Avatar totally obliterated every aspect of the visual department, added a great story and awesome characters, making it easily the movie of the year.

Loved this movie. Really had a low-budget feel to it. The few special effects were pretty much in the right places. Pretty good for a sequel. The scene with the stamp collection was kind of slow, but I really think that Donny Osmond shows what kind of actor he can really be when he puts some effort into it. At 1 hour and 28 minutes, it was a little short. Surprised there were no commercials before it. Neat to see a feature film in all black and white. The strong Japanese look to the film was refreshing. The underlying theme of meditation was beautiful, especially in the scene where the cowboys launch the balloon! I think you should see this one. AVATAR (2009) was great!… Expand

Avatar is masterful, stunning, gripping and visually overwhelming without getting boring or tiresome. It does what some many movies have tried doing for decades; It's a film that people will remember. The plotline is simple, kind of Star Wars meets Pocahontas, but is is brilliantly executed, sumptuously beautiful, has some of the best action scenes I've ever seen, and is full of smart cultural and political references.

What this movie does is take you out of your seat at the theatre and transports you almost literally into another world. The story has been heard before, but it's a new telling with much better tools. I really enjoyed this movie and felt that I more than received my money's worth watching it. I have very few criticisms of this film. Yes, the story can be predictable in some places, and yes it can be a bit cliche. However, those alone are completely insignificant. The length is what it should be for a film. The story is well told. In short, this is an epic film that is a must-see on EVERYONE'S list. I am surprised this film didn't score 95+ but if you read the critics, their most common criticism is the story being cheesy. Considering it was written 10-15 years ago and that a lot of films have been produced after this (with a lot being absolute rubbish), I'd say it is best to ignore them and see it for yourself in 3D and enjoy this milestone on the history of films.… Expand

This was probably the most entertaining movie experience I have ever had. Between the new 3D technology and the touching story it was the most amazing thing I have seen in a long time. The movie was simply breathtaking with the work Cameron has done. I, unlike a lot of people, also liked the story that went along with it, and thought it added to the piece. A very good movie overall and the best movie of 2009.

Avatar is by far the best movie i have seen. I saw it on the opening day, and saw it again the next day. Everything about this movie is fabulous, the soundtrack it awsome. I think it was a great movie, giving a 10 out of 10! I never got bored at any point while watching this movie. I do think the 3d was kind of gimmicky though because the main char looked like a pencil at one point, now that was the worst of I think it was a great movie, giving a 10 out of 10! An unparalleled masterpiece. James Cameron has done it again. One of the best if not the best movies of the year. It was long but it never really dragged on. Good solid plot and the visuals were spectacular. Must see in 3D
