There really isn't much to say, other than 3D is barely as impressive as others make it out to be and that was supposedly the 'saving grace' of the film. The storyline simply borrowed from a platter of other films and even still managed to fail. I also won't bother going into what I expect to be scientific inconsistencies.

Overall, the film is simply shallow. I don't suggest seeing it unless there is an irritating family member who makes you sit down and endure it.

The movie is well crafted, having stunning visual design and an entertaining (enough) story, but James Cam is smarter than what this movie actually is and has deliberately held off from making a more original, truly entertaining, and deep science fiction movie. The light science fiction themes the movie does have are good and relevant in our digital age of internet avatars, I just wished they did more with them. The movie is what it is, it is fun and worth a watch, but is only half as good as it could have been. Expand

Ultimately overrated. Great effects and visuals but the story sucks. The story line is like Pocahontas's and has nothing to say. The characters are rather ridiculous with the hipster navies.

"Avatar: 3D the IMAX Experience" Brief Review! "B"

Most of you have probably already seen it, and some of you may not have an IMAX nearby. However, the effects and visuals for the 3D IMAX were very cool. The world was vibrant and interesting. The movie story was a bit trite and predictable, though they did a decent enough job trying to eliminate (most) of the massive plot holes a sci-fi story that requires a lot of suspension of disbelief can create. I thought they tried too hard on the Sigourney Weaver "Avatar", because no one else remotely looked like her. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable enough experience with a "C" Plot and story, but an "A" for effects and visuals. Worth checking out.

My favorite moments involved the Avatar Training Montage and the glowy everything. Also, I am pretty sure that was Brian from "Wings" as one of the soldiers. As a note, prepare for a whole lot more IMAX 3D - Shrek, Toy Story, Alice in Wonderland, Spider Man, and more are among those on tap... And there's a rumor that... They are going to do Taxi Driver in 3D... Ok...

It's incredible fun, and it has created a beautiful world brought to life in 3D, but it needs a little work. Expand

I really expected alot from this movie, and I walked into the theater with "modern classic" in mind, overlooking the fact that I don't like James Cameron movies. Well uh.. thirty minutes in, I was thinking "Wow cool! Look at that 3D!" but there was that Indy 4 esque "this better not be it" thought in the back of my mind. The characters, the were like robots, with cartoonish generals and that sort of crowd. The weird blue chick was cool at first but soon got very annoying. Also, why is this Sam Worthington guy in so many movies? Why does James Cameron keep casting him? I mean come on, Teller would have been a more reasonable choice than that stooge. Still, the movie has eye-popping FX and the 3D is the best I've ever seen, so it's still probably worth your time if you enjoy other films by Cameron. The mythology is fairly deep, if not cliched, as well so Cameron is technically able to write a story a four year old couldn't. This would all be fine for a animated series, but spending all that money on FX for something like this probably isn't worth. Well, they made an ungodly amount of cashola on this movie, so I guess it was worth it. Then everybody talks about how great this movie is, and The Hurt Locker loses at the Golden Globes. I guess I just got James Cameron'ed again. Expand

It's story is a hackneyed, childish and sub-par re-telling. VFX and animation were mostly great but it's art and designs were entirely derivative and or directly copied from a variety of sources without the slightest hint of tribute or homage. It's not even a challenge to find nearly identical designs to everything in Avatar that pre-date it's production.

The acting and voicework are rather horrible in this feature, more-so with the human actors than the cartoon parts. But the biggest problem I found with Avatar is that it takes on the massive, painful, multi-dimensional and complicated subjects of human greed and violence and wraps everything up in under three hours with a clean and nearly happy ending and leaves the audience with no lingering important questions. Completely unrealistic and insane for a public that has become completely unrealistic and entirely insane.

On a scale of 0 to 10, 5.5 would be an average score (at least mathematically) . I find the VFX and technology to be very high 8-9 (way above average but not unbeatable) -but the actual movie itself, the story, characters, acting, dialog, etc. to be far below average, a 3 or generous 4 perhaps.

If you are just in it for the FX or some sort amusement park roller-coaster then you are probably in for a treat. Otherwise you will likely be disappointed. It doesn't hold a candle to Cameron's other films and his willing and overt participation in this films disgusting hype/marketing machine really put me off him, although I genuinely loved many of his previous works up to this point.

Those who hate Avatar hate it for its recycled story, lame characters, and laughable dialogue, and blame the others for not focusing on the elements that truly matter in any film. Well, both of those sides are right, and both of them can be validly argued. But, the latter side has a better point: Story and characters are what makes great cinema, not great looking effects. And, rather than using effects and images to tell a story (Blade Runner) or stir up interesting ideas (2001), Avatar is only interested in looking good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ah Avatar, where can I begin? This movie is a masterpiece of a motion picture! Everything about this movie is amazing! The plot takes place several thousand years in the future, where mankind has run out of resources, and are now looking for more on distant planets. They then come across a race of humanoids called the Na'vi, and go to war with them, all because the humans are stealing their resources. This is a very good, yet a tad bit unoriginal plot that everyone loves. As you can probably expect from this film the humans are the bad guys. The visual effects are excellent! Everything looks very realistic, and I love that! The character development is great too! It shows the main hero turning from a human to a Na'vi. Personally, I see little problem with this film, other than its plot, which is a little unoriginal. I wish the video game based off of this movie was better (see my review of that for more details), but it is unfair to judge a movie by its video game. Overall, this is the near perfect film! Expand

This movie could have been great, but it wasn't, as James Cameron is much more interested in plagarising from good plots and sticking a bunch of blue creatures and glittery fairy nonsense in it to make it look pretty. It's a shame the critics were either too confident in that this was going to go somewhere, or too scared to pipe up that it didn't. There are better movies out there that don't particularly seem to be popular with the critics. I am more than confident that this was not even worth the production it deserved, or the paper the tickets were printed on. There were aspects of the movie that I would have enjoyed, there were things I could of happily watched, but sadly it was blindingly obvious to me that the CGI and special effects were just part of the after effects I suffered when I came out of the cinema. 12 years is a long time out of the directors chair, but for Cameron this was necessary to create his vision for perfection, for technology to catch up on his dream, and boy oh boy was the wait worth it.
Cameron's epic tale is a war story of sorts, set in perhaps a not too distant future when humans have basically used up all resources on earth, and have sent many soldiers and scientists to the moon of Pandora, a distant planet in an entirely different star system.
Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is our paraplegic hero, a former marine who is sent to replace his deceased twin brother as a Na'vi hybrid, or "Avatars". These are created using human DNA and the DNA of the native tribe of Pandora, the Na'vi. Jake is soon tasked with infiltrating the tribe as a mole in a bid for them to give up the location of unobtanium, a precious mineral which can be used on earth.
Without going into too much more of the story, this film is beautiful, stunning and is a breakthrough in modern technology in cinema, the world of Pandora which Cameron has created never looks overly CGI, it looks, well, real, quite an impressive feat, the rumoured $300 million budget has been put to good use.
What is most impressive, however, is the cinematography Mauro Fiore, who has superbly collaborated with Cameron to create an alternate universe to get lost and to fantasise about other worlds.
To put this up against some of the best epic films of our time, the Star Wars franchise, Lord of the Rings and even Cameron's own Titanic, Avatar can proudly sit amongst if not above them, Star Wars was a franchise that had already made its market, LOTR were already a set of books and Titanic was a real life event, Avatar is a completely original concept, with obvious similarities to other films, but it is truly remarkable the scale and size of this film which was unsurprisingly over a decade in the making, but is not appreciated in its fullest to what has been achieved, a true mile stone, a technological and cinematic anomaly.
Only question and drawback I had from this film was simply...why did it have to end?

The visuals were amazing, of course, anyone could tell you that. However, the plot was disgustingly unoriginal and offensive on some points. The alien race is very clearly representing the Native Americans of Americas past. Not only are they on a very liberal agenda, living off the land, hunting, chanting, no need for technical advancement... etc. they also steal dress and even language and sound of Native Americans which i find extremely disrespectful and distasteful. Second, why are these humans so heartless. I've never encountered a business man so classless and idiotic. The general is all around bloodthirsty for no apparent reason other than the fact that he has a superman complex. While the visuals are amazing, there are no creative creatures throughout the entire film excluding the flying ones. Horses, rhinos, jungle cats, monkeys, lizards... its incredibly unimaginative. The relationship of different departments all under the figurehead of a mining operation is laughable. Science would never take a back seat to pure profit when it came to a world where intelligent life and different species were discovered. I don't care how far into the future this is, the human race has already evolved beyond the point of the barbaric atrocities portrayed in this movie, ESPECIALLY to a new intelligent species. Its insane to think this movie is even plausible, even 20 years ago when the script was being written. It literally makes me sick that all this visual ingenuity is going into a recycled, over hyped peace of garbage like this.

These aspects are the highlight of the film. If you get the opportunity to see Avatar on a movie theater screen then it is a must see due to it's brilliance on the big screen. However on the small screen much of this brilliance is less in the forefront and this allows you to see through how pretty it is and see how the story is really lacking. Avatar's story line is an unoriginal mishmash of different movies filled with uninspiring characters. Yes this movie will awe you with it's visual effects but if you're looking for a movie with a deep story Avatar is not it. the acting all an all was good and the story was not lacking at any fault of the actors. While the story is a familiar one, it is expertly told and very well written. The acting is solid and works well in the film. The direction from James Cameron is inspired and matches the expansive and daring chances taken in the visual storytelling of the film. However, the true stars are the visual effects team who do a truly phenomenal job to bring this story to life. With breathtaking visual effects and fantastic cinematography, Avatar comes to life through the visuals and breathes new life into a familiar, yet incredibly engaging, storyline. Due to this visual plethora of eye candy, Avatar reaches new levels never seen before in film that really elevates the film as an overall piece. While many leave Avatar feeling underwhelmed due to the now familiar use of CGI, 3D, and the bland story, I was left awestruck. While the visuals have led to a new trend in film, of which Avatar was the first, its effects hold up and, honestly, may still be the best use of its effects to date. A wonderous achievement, Avatar is a truly phenomenal work. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. James Cameron's Avatar is a fantastic film and I highly recommend it. I went to see it in theaters on the day it came out, and damn was it a fantastic film. Never have I been so engaged to a flick that was entertaining like Avatar. I know own it on DVD; it was that great. But it all boils down to personal preference. The reason it doesn't score a perfect 10, was because of some predictable scenes throughout the film and some cheesy lines. Other than that, Avatar was one of the most incredible and spectacular films I've ever watched. Oh, and I also recommend this movie on a Home Theater system to get the most of the experience. Expand

The special effects were absolutely awesome. The 3D? imo -- unnecessary. I don't think I even noticed anything being in 3D after the initial few minutes of putting my glasses on. The 3D technology was also inferior to the laser IMAX 3D films I saw in the late 90s, in those, things actually jumped out in the theater right in front of your seat, with this 3D technology? nope, things just kind of pop out a few feet in front of the screen only. The plot of the movie was okay, a not-so-subtle criticism of the Pentagon (you seen a pentagon around their map board) and/or Military Industrial Complex wanting to destroy the natural habitat of the indigenous people. This movie dragged a lot in parts though, it was longer than it needed to be, they should have cut out those dragging sections, it would have been much better then. Overall, amazing special effects and a mildly-entertaining movie. Worth seeing but doesn't live up to all of the hype. I give it an 8/10 Expand

"Avatar" is great, because It's full with thrilling moments. Now, the 3D animation is masterful, and the story, not fantastic, but great. It's with great voice acting and with good characters.

There are way to many people that simply "like" this movie and I don't get how that's possible. It's great in almost every way. Second, just because a film has similar theme and plot element as other films (Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves), does not mean it's automatically unoriginal? I see the similarities between the films, but it doesn't bother me. Why? Because this is a brilliant film. So what if it is, Avatar has created it's own little world when it comes to film. Nothing compares to the visual effects, graphics, and action. I don't think people realize that; Avatar has revolutionized cinema!

Visually it is utterly breathtaking. Special effect are some of the best to date. Then again it's Cameron, can we expect any less?!

Visuals aside it really isn't to much to brag about. This story has been told countless times before, the only difference is that this time it's big blue aliens. Performances are decent all around, but nothing too spectacular. I feel that Hollywood must have a standard contract clause that obligates Sigorney Weaver to start in any and every Sci-fi (or creature) movie. All hail the Queen of Weird.

Overall:
Avatar has been blown out of proportions by the general media and the casual moviegoer and isn't as grand as it pretends to be. It's a simple story that follows a traditional story arc to a predictable end. Don't get me wrong I still thoroughly enjoyed, I just don't see it as anything more than it is. A good movie with kick ass effects.

How could a movie with a tired story line, hilariously one-dimensional characters, and poor script have such good critical reviews? Given, the movie has stylish directing and fantastic visuals, but I could have the exact same entertainment experience on a theme park ride. A good movie is supposed to tell a story and have relatable characters, and Avatar had neither of those things. One thing I will say is that the movie gave me a good laugh, when the stereotypical grunt Marine was in the robot suit and pulled out a comically huge knife, I thought that was the funniest thing ever. If you are looking for a film with some substance, don't see Avatar, but if you just want some eye-candy, you might like it. Expand

All I ask is that you please be respectful of my opinion, just as I am respectful of yours. Please, and thank you. Now, let's begin.
I've been circling back to "Where the Wild Things Are" quite a few times lately, but let me circle back to it one more time. As I mentioned before, the end of 2009 graced us with a few incredibly polarizing films. "Where the Wild Things Are" (is it a brilliant portrayal of childhood or a weird, boring, creepy film?), "Michael Jackson's This Is It" (is it an honest portrayal of Michael and his concert or a ploy to make money?), and "A Christmas Carol" (does the visual splendor make it worth watching, or is it too overwhelming?) helped create some interesting conversation pieces at the end of the year (I've also heard that "2012" was polarizing, but I can't really speak for it, as I haven't seen the film). However, one film was more polarizing than all the rest, and that was box-office sensation "Avatar." Were the groundbreaking visuals and revolutionary 3D enough to make the film great? Or was it another case of style over substance? Does it deserve to be the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide? Or is there no logical explanation as to how/why that could've happened? Was it worth the hype? It's a matter of personal taste, but I personally believe that it was worth the hype. It's brilliantly-crafted, it's exciting and it's memorable, and while the story isn't the most original, breathtaking thing ever, somehow the movie is still so engrossing even without a highly-original script or original characters. The characters themselves are actually quite memorable, and the film actually has some pretty interesting themes to it in regards to politics, culture and religion. There's also so much that can be interpreted from the film, which I think is part of why it works: you can make a lot of things out of this film and a lot of those things make sense. Even for a film that started production in the 1990s, "Avatar" is a worthy conversation piece and a wonderful film overall. It's not for everyone, and a ton of people will definitely voice their displeasure with the film, which is perfectly fine, but in my opinion, "Avatar" is a great film and a very memorable experience.

Pandora as a universe is immersive, believable and fascinating; so much creativity and attention to detail was put into the creatures, the plants and everything surrounding it. It completely drew me into the movie experience and made me forget about the mediocre and uncreative story. It didn't matter, because all the emotion was conveyed through visuals, and that worked incredibly well.

Avatar is one of the most entertaining pieces of cinema I have ever seen and every time I watch it, it is a joy to look at - even in 2018.

Major probs to James Cameron who managed to give life to this CGI and green-screen world. But still everything on this fictional planet Pandora feels bland and we're given little to no information about how big it is or how many species there are. I have the feeling we only get to see this small part of the planet almost like a little country and nothing more. I wanted to see more of this amazing world instead of going on this emotional struggle with main-character Jake Sully (played decent by Sam Worthington). Even tough the stuff you see in this movie is very decent and sometimes very good I think the story overall was a bit underwhelming. This world has so much potential (and yes we are getting sequels) and it's made to look so beautiful by James Cameron and the whole crew that I just wanted more. But besides the story, the cast is doing a decent enough job and the writing, while very explanatory, is also very decent and then off course the visuals are amazing; which make this movie so amazing to watch. WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's very long: too long for family viewing with younger children and almost too long even for adults - you feel like parts could have been cut without detrementing the overall experience. 'Avatar' is also quite confusing for first watching, but this length stops you from wanting to watch it twice.
VERDICT: A very impressive fleshed out but dragged out piece of film making from Cameron.

With everything and the divided opinions, it is a fact that this film created another before and after in the field of special effects, which in no way tarnish a plot with an ecological context that somewhat refers to Princess Mononoke (1997) by Hayao Miyazaki. Now, to wait if the long-awaited sequel meets expectations. Expand

And I watched it only now and missed little. It's definitely not the best film of Cameron's career. In my personal opinion, he will not even get into the TOP 5. Avatar refers to those films that need to be watched only in the cinema and only in IMAX. This is the only way to get true pleasure from it. But even after 14 years, the film looks amazing in terms of CGI quality level. It's really amazing. Yes, now it is perceived as a given, but in 2009 it was shaking. The story itself is clearly relegated to the background. Avatar is like Crysis in the video industry. Beautiful and technological, but boring and empty in essence. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Avatar was one of the best movies that I have ever seen! It was a shock to me when Avatar didn't win Best Picture at the Oscars. The visual effects, acting, character development, and the story-line was perfect. I highly recommend this movie to anyone! Expand

So many Plot holes, its a movie that sold due to special effects, the story that exists is heavy handed and forced.Nevermind the info dumps tell don't show seems to be the writers motto.

Because the planet's environment is poisonous, human/Na'vi hybrids, called Avatars, must link to human minds to allow for free movement on Pandora. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed former Marine, becomes mobile again through one such Avatar and falls in love with a Na'vi woman (Zoe Saldana). As a bond with her grows, he is drawn into a battle for the survival of her world. Expand

Cameron's choice to create a 3D visual feast was a wise one as it allowed for the audience to invest in the world they're creating. It's a work of great effort and skill in both direction and performance as the motion sensory method of animating the Na'Vii allows for realistic cgi movements. It's a cinematic achievement that should be regarded as more than just a star crossed lover story but an epic Sci fi with few limits and a pg story of love. Expand

Best movie I've ever seen, even after 11 years. It does almost everything. The one thing it doesn't have is much humor. But Great acting, great action, great visual/special effects, great 3d if you saw it in theaters, great music, it presents you a whole new world to learn about, it has a moral message; not a super deep or revolutionary one, but actionable and practical, and that's more than most movies can say. I don't know if it's because that's where the big fight scenes started to happen but yeah, it's got a decent cast but the plot is ok I guess. Also, I will have to say this though, I really liked the score of the movie from James Horner, I think that it worked really well from start to finish. Finally, the fight scenes were quite enjoyable for the most part and I think the CGI throughout this movie is incredibly good but I think that's about it really. Expand
