This movie was awesome. I love this movie but something is a little familiar.. Anyone ever see Dances with Wolves? Avatar is the exact same movie with a sci-fi twist and technology upgrades. I'm telling you, the exact same movie.

Don't be fooled by people who smugly like to find faults. Just because similar plots have been developed before doesn't make this cliche. It has a very powerful message about the arrogance of man. And it's exciting. I think critics miss the point. I prefer the professional analysis of someone like Roger Ebert and he knows it's good. Expand

I had such high hopes for this film, and watching it took me to that joyfully alive world that he (and several hundred other crew I'm guessing) has built. When I go and watch a film in a theatre, I love the feeling of being immersed...this takes immersion to a whole new level, not just becuase of the 3d, but the ambition and scale is simply astonishing. People have critised the story a little, and I guess in essence it takes a rather worn path. Look at what he has achived though, taking people somewhere utterly alien and beautiful, almost unimaginably so, built a compelling love story that truly works, and pleased the kick-ass action fans a hundred times over. He's done it again, this even surpasses the game-changer he promised. Expand

I was very surprised not in just the quality of special effects and how they were conveyed into real sensuous emotion. The love and heart shown between its characters really showed through. However the real spirit of the movie transcended the special effects, or even the acting and story line. What really impressed me was the moral integrity this movie has. Watching Avatar in 3D has been a whole new experience for me. The special effects were like being the right there on the screen. 3D technology has come a long long way and I can definitely see this as being the new wave of the future for the cinematic Industry. With this being said this movie touched me. I was surprised to see myself moved to being teary eyed. I was expecting an action and suspense movie but received something so much more. Special effects alone are like candy they sometimes taste good but don't leave you with anything of real value. Avatar however had a message very poignant for the times we live in. Some might see this a one of the few flaws of the movie, that and the overall length. However I saw it as its greatest strength. Avatar mirrored in a way how western civilization has impacted North and South American cultures. How what was seen as primitive or even savage was really a culture who were in general much more in touch with their environment. However with modern technologies, and spiritual blindness (i.e. greed and prejudice) they and the environment that supports us were but nearly wiped out. Unfortunate for us this is a fair tale of sorts. This movie did not pull any punches in showing how destructive and extreme such spiritual blind spots can manifest themselves. It was for me a sad reminder of what has happened in our own history. For the inhabitants of Pandora, the foe was overcome... for now anyway. But for us the story is yet to be finished. This film inspired me to understand what this world needs the most, spiritual and by effect environmental healing. I hope in some way shape or form to be used as a powerful force in this universe to help our world at a time which so desperately needs it. This is my prayer. And by my freewill I have chosen to do whatever I can to help this come to its fruition. Expand

Has the 'theme' been done before?? Yes, but so what? The story in Titanic was done before too. The matrix to me was a better version of 'Dark City', and how many films have there been about Queen Elizabeth? To me, this is a familiar theme done in a different way ' and for that ' it deserves my 100 points. Most stories today can be traced back to a familiar fairytale ' but that shouldn't take away from the film as a standalone project. I couldn't possibly think that Cameron can deliver something that would even match - let alone surpass - the hype surrounding it. For over a year, we've been inundated with stories about all the crazy technology that had to be invented for this thing. With a budget of $300 million or more, how could it really be worth over a million dollars a minute? Well, now that I've seen it I could put it down as one of the best films of the decade. I will never understand critics who decided to pan this film. Maybe it's spite or resentment, or whatever, but this is one of the most pure examples of movie making we've seen in a long while. Yes, the story doesn't reach too far past what Cameron has attempted in the past but, with such a classic tale, it is even MORE impressive that Cameron can make every minute count. We know what's going to happen. We know where the love interest is and where some of the plot turns are going to take us, but it takes a real master to be able to weave around people's preconceived notions, deliver everything that people expect, and still make it an adventure ride worth taking. Masterfully shot, masterfully edited, masterfully animated and rendered. If you don't like this movie, then you don't like movies. Expand

I'm not the word's biggest Titanic fan, and it's been a long, long while since the days of the Abyss, the Terminator series and Aliens. Welcome back, Mr. Cameron! And how. The trailers don't do this movie justice. I've never been a fan of profuse CGI either, and without the glasses, I felt this looked like a game worthy of my Xbox 360, but not the silver screen. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Something magical happens to this CGI world when you slip on the glasses: it lives. Breathing and pulsing fresh cutting edge cinema that will change everything. Cameron's in full on Cameron mode here, the character's features and movements are fantastic. The creatures, excellent. But the magic is his details are extraordinary. As one reviewer said, no detail goes unused in the advancement of the story. And that is the real subtle magic to this masterpiece. Go see it fans of sci-fi and fantasy. Christmas has come early! It started a little fast and was pretty much straight into the action, the characters in the movie could have been built on a little more but all in all this was probably one of the best films i've seen in a long time! If you plan to see this movie then make the most of it, its made for 3D so make every effort to see it in 3D or at an IMAX and I guarantee you wont be disappointed Expand

The visuals are the best ever committed to film, hands down. This is an amazing film that has set a new bar for what other effects driven movies will strive for. I was constantly amazed that everything (from the bugs to the foliage) I was looking at was 100% cg. The effects are so convincing and photorealistic it almost goes beyond comprehension. Never have cg characters emoted so convincingly. BTW: The "military" in this movie is not a branch of the US military or sanctioned by the government in any way. They are a team of ex-military mercenaries that are working as "protection" for a corporate entity. This is explained very early on in the movie. Expand

Despite the age-old story (as I've heard), Avatar does it so well to be entitled as a unique story of its own. The concept of having a sentient network of vegetation, all communicating via fibre optics was astounding and left me wanting to know more. I really wish for there to be a sequel, after all, I don't think the human civilisation will allow themselves to be denied high temperature super conductors just because of some "savages" living on the planet. Perhaps if there were a sequel we could see the sentient network Eywa use more of its potential, with aircraft being swatted out of the sky by the tentacle-like vines attached to the floating unobtainium islands. To see another film James Cameron's Avatar is one of the most important American films ever made. It pushes into the mainstream many concepts that we must embrace as a society in order to survive on a planet we are slowly destroying. To see another film with a very similar theme check out Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. Human's arrive on a planet named Pandora and discover that under a village of indigenous humanoids is a rare mineral they want called "obtainium". This is the MacGuffin of the plot. James Cameron makes this an obvious joke because he wants us to know that the real motivation for the corporate and military types of the film is man's urge to destroy and kill. The concept of the film is that a few humans are given the chance to inhabit Avatars which are living simulacrums of the Navi(again Mr. Cameron is making a joke, Navi being a compression of native). The main character, Jake takes to his new body and learns all the secrets of the planet. Unlike Earth, where we can't actually link our minds to other living creatures, The Navi can actually entwine a part of their bodies with other animals and plants and share direct communication with the ecosystem. They rightly believe that all life is connected. If I have one complaint it's that Mr. Cameron has the natives call their planet goddess Eewa which reminds me of Ewoks which reminds me of the beginning of the decay of George Lucas' creative talents. The last hour of the film is standard action film and love story but done extremely well. Since this is a Fantasy the good guys win and send the military and corporate greed-heads packing. Why am I talking about this film on my Dog Blog? Because for the last half dozen years I've been trying to figure out what life is about and partnering up with my dog this last year has made me even more aware that all life is precious. I may even try to overcome my revulsion of spiders and insects and try to capture and release them when I find them in my house. The smartest person I ever met (PHD from Cambridge University) once told me about the Gaia Theory. She said earth is a living organism and we have become a disease on it's surface. Earth has had life on it most likely since the point when the surface cooled enough for liquid water to form. There is four billion years of DNA research under Gaia's belt and when we reach the point where she can no longer bear us a virus will emerge that will wipe us out. Maybe we can learn to co-exist with Gaia but we haven't gotten there yet. Expand
