This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first heard about the movie I was skeptical at best, I love animated movies so when I heard that this would be a mix of live action and CG for the majority of the movie, I was doubtful. After watching the movie, I have to say that the Alita herself is the star of the movie, she doesn't look too "anime" (aside from her giant eyes), and as a character, her motives and outlooks are believable. The action is done very well, the story is serviceable, and the characters around Alita are written well enough to be believable. Mostly. There are 2 characters that I had an incredibly hard time believing. These 2 would be Hugo (Alita's Crush) and Sheeran (Alita's attempted mother figure). Sheeran has a huge turning point later into the movie where for some reason she turns her motives inside out and now decides that she wants to help Alita rather than hurt her. It would seemingly come out of the blue, as the movie gives no reason for her to care at all about helping Alita, yet we are supposed to believe that Sheeran is willing to give up her goals to save Alita (and Hugo) when she was just plotting to kill or capture Alita just a few scenes prior. The big reason I cannot give this movie any higher than a 7 is Hugo, he has the most 2 dimensional character I've seen in a long time. He is supposed to be Alita's first and only love, yet all he is capable of showing is anger or near monotone babbling, he has no compassion and any time he is trying to care it just fails. All in all the movie has fantastic action, a decent story, and a very strong lead, but 2 of the 3 most important supporting cast just fall short and bring the rest of the experience down with them. This movie has a very nice atmosphere that streches across the whole movie! I personally liked the story, even if it is not very complex. The relatively open end makes me want to see more, so i hope for a sequel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. : Alita works so well as an allegory for growing from child to adult. That alone makes her relatable by anyone. When we see her experience small joys in life like eating Chocolate for the first time, we relate. When she wants chocolate instead of dinner, we relate. We've all been there. It's charming and endearing and there's a child-like sense of wonder and innocence to her at first. But then she begins to grow and mature and find out how dark the world is. She realizes she has love for other people and that there's a lot of risk involved in that. She goes through phases of adolescence like her first "puppy love" crush and relationship developing. She goes through the "trying too hard to be cool" phase that is so well demonstrated by her speech in Bar Kansas (that gets laughed at) and her incitement of a fight. She flaunts her hunter-warrior license even though she hasn't even carried out a job yet. She thinks she's all grown up now even though she's not. She even wears a leather trench coat in that arc. Can you think of a better attire of a teenager trying too hard to be cool and badass? Haha. So many of us have been there, especially if you were a teenager in The Matrix era and the period after that film's release (late 90s/ Early 00s). Eventually she learns harsh lessons that we all learn, like that people aren't always what you assume they are, that love can blind you to the truth, and that rushing into a relationship without truly getting to know the person can lead to its failure. There's a lot of serious heft to this whole arc, but the overall theme is universal... childhood innocence eclipsing into adult loss of innocence and concern for how difficult and dark the world and life can be. Seeing Alita sink to abysmal lows and not give up is one of the most inspiring things I've seen on screen in years. They really took it to a new level with that fight scene against Grewishka. There were serious and severe consequences to her overestimating her abilities. I think we all have some moment in life that that scene could represent. This scene had weight for every character, not just Alita. It caused a lot of changes in the people around her and inspired other people to be heroes. That's what makes Alita such a great hero. She is a hero who doesn't just save people, she inspires those people to become heroes too. If she hadn't done that, she'd have died midway through the film, but in her time of need, she got the help she needed because she had inspired others to be courageous and stand up in the face of evil. The movie stays as true as it can to the original story while maintaining a visually engaging story. Yes, some elements were moved around, some elements glossed over, and editorial changes in some of the character narratives, but over all this is the story I had fallen in love with in print form. This is what and how Manga and Anime movies that are brought to live action should all aspire to do and be. For people who are not familiar with the original story, the pacing might seem a bit rushed in some areas, and some of the character connections might have been better formed through the narrative and dialogue. I do think enough clues are given along the way that this should not be any real obstacle to fully understanding and appreciating the story as it unfolds or forming audience connections with the characters. The mix of drama, action, and humor were on point IMO, and at no time during my first, second, or even fifth time seeing it did I ever feel that time was dragging and I wished a given scene would just hurry up. The movie definitely has a positive rewatch factor. The world itself is fully developed and with tiny details that crop up over repeated watching. At my fifth time seeing it I was still finding little new things I hadn't truly noticed before that continue to add depth to the world. It is a movie I have happy recommend to my friends, even those who are not into the anime or manga art forms. Expand

"You left the theater with the relationship, feelings and the themes. That is what important." - Rosa Salazar

I watched this movie more than once in the theatre, never I did this in my whole life. I went to this movie with low expectation, like any other movies because I treat them as "entertainment". This movie is without its flaws, with little plot issues here and there. But as Rosa said, you left the theater with the feeling and emotion and Alita: Battle Angel EXACTLY DOES THAT! That is the most important thing you should measure. The VFX is top notch, one of the best. The action scenes are well done, I'm never a fan of action scenes, but Alita did it for me. And again, when you think about the film, you think about the feelings and emotions and it's indeed the sweetest film in my life. Alita: Battle Angel will always be in my heart.

I don't understand with other reviewers saying it's cliche. The film takes the source (which is from the 90s) material seriously, and what love is not cliche anyway?

I was shocked - the movie was excellent. It was faithful to spirit of the original material (thus making the story/characters meaningful and good), with entire scenes even taken directly from the source. The action, and effects were superb, the acting great, and all without any identity politics or preaching. A symphony for the eyes and ears that creates a cinema experience so good I have rarely, if ever, experienced - even on repeat viewings (best in 3D in IMAX in my opinion). The feeling of happiness and contentment you get from seeing something special is like that of few other movies. I've heard it compared by older folk to the feeling of leaving the theater in 1977 after Star Wars a New Hope.

What really makes the movie work though is the performance of Rosa Salazar as Alita. One can't help but love that character. The large eyes are not a concern, as you will accept them very quickly, and they work stylistically and plot wise. The knee jerk uncanny valley reaction is an initial reaction that is quickly overcome by the humanity and likability of the character.

For parents, keep the PG13 rating in mind, as there is violence (not gruesome, but they get away with more than they should due to it happening mostly to cyborgs), and the ending will probably be under appreciated by pre-teens.

Was the movie perfect? No. It's because you get so engaged and immersed in the movie, you notice really little things - lines of dialogue that you'd change or have the actor redo, and perhaps an effect or two that could have been improved catches your eye. Or maybe that it sets up a sequel may bother some (but hey - the movie covers only 2 of the 9 volumes of the original manga - what do you expect? Harry Potter did not defeat Voldemort in the first movie either, and I see no one complaining about that.). But then, if you're honest, you remember how incredibly trivial these gripes are when in relation to how the movie makes you feel and to the overall experience. If you then ask yourself how many stars do I knock off for these imperfections, you realize that no movie could ever reach a perfect score if held to the same criteria. If I were to give this movie anything else than a perfect score due to its faults, then a perfect score is pretty much unattainable for any movie, and what's the point of having a score no movie ever gets?

I have to add my two cents as I have never felt such a way about a movie; the most times I have ever seen a movie in a theater was twice, but Alita: Battle Angel, 15 times. It really is just that good. Rosa Salazar's performance is top-tierI have to add my two cents as I have never felt such a way about a movie; the most times I have ever seen a movie in a theater was twice, but Alita: Battle Angel, 15 times. It really is just that good. Rosa Salazar's performance is top-tier amazing (especially considering what she had to wear during filming; check out the behind the scenes videos), the visuals are stunning and the fight scenes are jaw-dropping.

One complaint I see from some people is about the story and the set-up for a sequel. What has to be understood is that James Cameron wanted to stay close to the original manga story that is comprised of 9 books from the early 90's. So, to maintain the integrity of the original manga, there are some parts of the story that cannot be removed, overly modified or simply told over the course of just one movie. With that said, Cameron and Rodriguez completely nailed the attitude and feelings of the original manga. Simply put: there is a reason why Cameron chose to tell Alita's story and it is absolutely fantastic.

If you like action, a strong and likable main heroine, amazing visuals and a great story, this is your movie. If I'm not convincing, go watch any, or all, of the hundreds of audience review videos out there and you won't regret diving into the world of Alita: Battle Angel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you see Alita as a pure action movie, you miss the most important part about it. It's not about the action, the action serves the story. It's about Alita's character, about her emotions, about her relationships with the people around her.
Her Journey starts as a little girl, discovering the world around her, as a proxie daughter for Dr. Ido. But she develops, she grows into adolescence with all the rebellion and over-confidence coming with it. She makes mistakes, she suffers defeat, and she comes back stronger then before. She loves and is loved, and while she discovers her place in the world throughout the relations to her father figure Ido, her love interest Hugo, and her friends, she as a character is not defined by them. She shows the entire spectrum of human emotionality. Alita isn't just a fictional character - she's the most human being I've ever met. And that's why this movie is so great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alita: Battle Angel is the story of a utopian society where guns have been outlawed and regular people are paid to enforce the law by their corporate overlords at night, because the mechanized military force can’t be bothered and everyone else is too busy Ubering women home from the club to their doom.

The plot is fairly muddled: Alita doesn’t know if she wants to be a manic pixie dream girlfriend or a naïve cyborg daughter or a rebellious teenager or the leader of a sci-fi rebellion or a professional roller skater (sic). Which is fine, but it means that there are points when it seems like the movie is being drawn and quartered by romantic and action plots, like the moment when she’s lined up for the Big Game and she simultaneously gets phone calls from both the Doctor telling her to abandon her post and her boyfriend who needs her help in a completely different place. It’s easy to imagine that what the film intended was to show that Alita contains multitudes and wears different masks for different people, a bit of powering wish fulfillment here and an emotionally accessible boyfriend there, but in some sense Alita comes off as a little shallow and restless.

Christoph Waltz’s backstory is pretty shady, which is also fine–there’s something to be said for leaving the audience wanting more, creating drama through mystery. It’s unclear what his daughter’s deal was that required him to build her “fast legs,” or if he was just unwilling to live in a world where his daughter would have to–god forbid–wheel herself around like any other person with a mobility issue. Which brings up a point about disability in the year 2400: it certain seems like a lot of people who would otherwise just be heads and spinal columns are turning into enhanced bounty hunters for little or no money. The doctor’s moral objection to rocket ball racing don’t seem to be that hard and fast when Alita decides it’s the only way she’s going to be able to jog her amnesiac memory–even though it seems like the “demon” of his former involvement spawned his disgust.

If I were the nurse from this film, Dr. Ido’s assistant, I would be a little miffed. She had some lines and she clearly is helping keep the business afloat, but Alita kind of creepily avoids her in any scene where they’re together. She calls the doctor “dad” in front of her, snuggles up with him on the coach, under the nurse’s grossed out frown, without so much as a “hello” or a “thank you for playing a role in reviving me twice.”

With an eye squarely on the ending of the film: it seems like Alita isn’t actually able to accomplish very much aside from her journey of self-discovery. At no point does it seem like she’s in danger of facing a competent foe. The lackeys of the villain are constantly depending on sub-optimal grunts to do their dirty work, which makes it a little surprising when they are able to score even a little scratch on the most advanced piece of (Martian?) weaponry in centuries. The villain relies on a form of hypnosis (which I find narratively boring) in order to project himself on the lower world. I know that this is an adaptation of a manga and that that magna exists as part of a certain aesthetic of sci-fi dystopias, but where I’ve seen it done best is in Rick Remender and Sean Murphy’s Tokyo Ghost, which for a number of reasons finds ways to transcend the clichés of the genre.

Tokyo Ghost, if I can get off track for a moment, still has the consumerist battle royale race car scenes, the man-to-man brawls, the journey of self-discovery, the empowered woman hero, and the anti-war critique, but it does not give itself over completely to those flashier elements of storytelling. It grounds itself in issues of environmental destruction and corporate oligarchy. So, I bring it up primarily to point to it as a path not taken in the conception of the original source material.

For a different perspective, Friend has always been a big proponent of “original sci-fi” movies and liked everything about this movie except all the scenes with the boy, who was terrible–this was constant critique whenever he saw the trailers. Wife seconded that by saying that at no point does he seem like a nice guy. He spends a lot of time creeping on a two-day old cyborg teenager, despite being old enough to drink alcohol with the owner of the race track. He cuts their dates short to do horrible things to innocent people on the streets. And he just generally spends a lot of time committing sins of omission, besides being a poor jumper.

Film in general seems like it was a bit of a mess, but no so outrageously stupid that you should avoid it. For more on uncanny valleys and the disappointing CGI check out the Imaginary Worlds podcast, unfortunately behind a Spotify paywall. Also look at Josh Spiegel’s take on “the pitfalls of sequel-building,” and take heed of calls punish high profile producers of the film.

This doesn't ruin the ending but on reflection, you are left knowing you paid for a full movie but got shortchanged. It suffers from the same problem as "John Carter", they fell in love with the original story. They spent so much time on making the eyes perfect and the machinery glittery but the lighting didn't feel real. Sort of like they hired so many modelers they couldn't afford to hire enough lighters to get it right. See this is the problem when I start thinking more about it, I could see why there are low reviews. Critics hate anything having to do with anime made for an older audience. It's irrational. The tropes at the beginning were annoying and the beginning was way too compressed, IMO. It's not a 5/10. It got better after the beginning.

The visuals in this film were stunning and I loved the character of Iron City. The fight scenes were spectacular, as were the characters/bounty hunters. It really is a beautiful film visually, so yes, I'm impressed.

Problems with the film are that the story could have been more, idk, better. I do understand that when world building there are information dumps that have to happen. If the film makers had taken the time to do these dumps properly, it could have been a more satisfying film. I also wasn't impressed with the ending. You can't just end it like that and not give us another film.

Overall, I do recommend this film and I hope they make another to wrap up the loose ends of this film.

7 for 7.5. Simply James Cameron + Robert Rodriguez/2. While the story is lacking so much, Alita succeeds to deliver Cameron's bid project in a good way. The action is the best among all other movies.

The liberties taken with the story are ridiculously crying to appeal for teenagers... "let's bundle while playing a rollerblading game"... nonesense. I am glad this movie exists, let me get this out there. Films like these give me hope that manga and anime related content will get exposure and a good budget.

TL;dR I watched this movie after putting it off for a while also intentionally avoiding a theater watch considering a lot of the negative reviews I heard, but I now feel it was a missed opportunity for me. This is not the most awesome, perfectest movie out there at all. But the good just nudges out enough of the bad offering a positive experience in my watch.

The Good
Rosa Salazar was a positive for me, the twinkle in her eye from the start of the movie to her hardened Battle Angel namesake was believable and gradual. Christoph Waltz added beautifully to the dynamic between himself and Rosa with Ido-Alita dialogue being the best out of all the character interactions. Also watching him swing that giant rocket powered hammer around was awkward but kinda in a good way showing his ageing character yet solidifying his bad ass courage to go up against dangerous cyborgs.
The Visuals were the biggest star of Film. Every Shot of the world building and the Cyborg/Cyberpunk VFX were detailed, seamless and astonishingly photo realistic; combined with some satisfying action sequences is a big reason for being worth a watch.

Now The Bad aspects to this film...
Hugo was my biggest peeve in the film. Even though his character was written as major Main Protagonist motivation which was good, the actor Johnson was a wet towel and nothing more than a pretty boy. Even his own inner conflict seems to come rather abruptly, his two friends were far more interesting and I would have loved for them as a trio to have a similar arc as 2 friends and 1 love interest. The prejudiced friend and a female friend to Alita were two missed opportunities with Hugo's buddies-in-crime as this would have made compelling story telling.
The actor was bad enough without being saddled with some of the most groan worthy dialogue between love interest and Main Character which dragged a lot. There were some good flashes of well written dialogue in the Hugo-Alita interaction but they were few and far between.
Vector was pretty much a whatever aspect of the film as Ali is an amazing actor but he was given nothing to do other than to spout and or cause plot furtherance, similarly Connelly was another wasted talent.

All in all as I mentioned there were bad aspects to the film, awful really; but the core of Ido and Alita, absolutely excellent VFX, good action and Rosa Salazar were all strong enough to warrant at least one watch and another sequel to get the wheels rolling for good movies inspired by anime/manga literature.

An ambitious, imperfect movie whose biggest flaw is that it tries to take on TOO MUCH material in one go.

The visuals are what you come for, of course, and those do not disappoint. They have more of a "hyper-real" and stylized approach and it works well to make you feel like it's a manga brought to life. The only time they fail is when the CG style clashes with a real world that just can't be as outlandish.

Never read the source material, but I felt like it was trying to cover too much ground, forcing a final act that should have left a bit more to the imagination instead of doing sequel setup.

I got curious and went to see it, and I'm so glad I did. This is easily the best movie I've seen in a while.

I've always loved science fiction and cyberpunk, so Alita was right up my alley. Just several minutes into the movie I knew I was going to love it. It has everything - detailed and believable world, amazing visual effects, but the best part by far is Rosa Salazar's acting. She was given a task to make a cyborg from the future seem real and relatable, and she absolutely nailed it. This achievement is even more remarkable, considering that her performance was relayed to the viewer via a computer generated rendition of her character. This performance is the reason moviegoers everywhere fell in love with her character.

Speaking of the character - the eponymous Alita absolutely steals the show. We follow her hero's journey from the moment she wakes up in a new and unfamiliar world. The movie thankfully avoids the common pitfall of turning the female protagonist into a Mary Sue. Despite being truly exceptional Alita is still a human. She has her strengths and weaknesses. Her character flaws are the extensions of her virtues: she does not stand by in the presence of evil, but because of that she might pick fights she can't win; she's idealistic and hopeful, but it also means that she is very naive; she's independent and determined, to the point of being headstrong and unruly. A character that has both strengths and weaknesses is easier to relate to. Having to work around one's flaws and shortcomings helps demonstrate the strengths. Shadows make highlights seem even brighter, as the saying goes.

This movie is truly one of a kind. If you still can catch it in theaters - give it a watch. Otherwise - get it on Bluray when it comes out. It's a movie everyone should experience.

Alita's uncanny valley issues aside (mouth more than the eyes), she came across as very human with complex emotions. Christopher Waltz as Ido was the perfect casting choice, he nailed the roll and his natural features are close enough to the original character though I fully bought into him as Dr Ido.

TLDR: Good cast, good/strong characters (except Hugo), true to the source material and makes me want more.

It tries to shoehorn together several different storylines and cut so many pieces out of each to make them fit into the time alloted that they lose everything of value. Every storyline could have stood on its own and made an excellent movie.

The characters are bereft of nuisance and lacking in the depth that made them original in the source material. They are introduced as cardboard cutouts and with no reason to care about who they are and what they want.

And the worst part is that the movie ends on a dead note; there is no climax, no highlight, no grand finale. And to add to the insult; it ends with "to be continued".

What a mindless game, oh, also the film is a lot like the competition.

Alita: Battle Angel

Rodriguez is a mystery to me. Something I can't solve. Particularly, his definition of style. I do not understand this part of narrative. At all. The director Robert Rodriguez persists on applying makeup to every frame of the film. Every scene is beautified to be adored on large screen but then he also craves for the harrowing images that apparently is to express the other side of this world. This mixture of alluring and disturbing images should have attended the perfect balance. And yet, it breathes sad air, poignancy, irreplaceable and annoyingly unsettling is the feeling you are left with. Addition to that, loud and cheesy background score, poor editing, amateur camera work and chalky conversation gives away the film within its first five minutes.

A film that then, runs on formulaic structure that was found to be outdated ten years ago, is just a cherry on top. The crown is snatched from Godzilla: The King Of Monsters, that was considered to be the worst investment of the year. The action is more obsessed on painting the frame, in fact any physical sequence for that matter, the makers are persuasive on coloring the film with crowd pleasing color rather than work on the choreography or the momentum behind those empty punches.

The vfx that everyone is drooling about, is yes, admirable but still not highly detailed or perpetually convincing, simply put it this way, I have seen better, polished and much smoother, than in this so called futuristic world. Each character is given an introduction individually, a smart move if you have somewhere deep to go, they are as thin as wafer and transparent as water. In fact, the only way you see someone surprise you, is Christoph Waltz, who through his performance sculpts a resonant message as he fixes Rosa Salazar's- aka Alita: Battle Angel- suit before she enters the competition.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is no denying that Alita's motion capture is the best visual spectre in the movie. But let's move past that. Rober Rodriguez is always an odd choice given that he is not the best storyteller nor director for his actors. As usual, when James Cameron is the screenwriter, there is always the same arc, plot holes and the...

...the love interest always dying. It is quite clear that there is an intentional setup for a sequel, which is usually why there are so many questions unanswered. But we definitely need more on where she came from and why she didn't visit the command deck on the fallen ship again...
The script is written in a way that we really don't care about them, even when they are killed off...such as Vector, Shereen, Ido or even Hugo...

This movie could have been this year's breakthrough, but the directing and script really ruined it.

This was fun and visually impressive. However, now that the film’s setting and characters have been established, hopefully the sequels will have less convoluted plots, and not as many obvious plot-twists.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie started good, but then the love scenes came in,and ruined the whole phase of the movie...I dont mind the romance but it was not cohesive and immersive for me.I loved her facial expressions, and fighting scenes tho.She was more badass and cooler in her first body when she lacked the memory. Alita is the best movie I've seen since the first Star Wars. I left the theater wanting more. I pray we get a sequel. I loved this movie.
