Story is relatively cliche as it is based on a story written in the 80's when cliches were being built still. Main character and her dynamic with her father figure instantly drew me in. I became fascinated with the world and bought the comics to explore more immediately after the movie. Watching Alita was a completely different experience than any other movie similar to watching Avatar, reminded me of the real reason how watching a movie on the big screen is so completely apart from watching a movie at home. On top of all that, you can really tell the film-makers cared about the source material, might be off-putting for people who are unfamiliar with anime, but it triumphs over the adaptation stereotypes. GO WATCH IT! Expand

I've already seen it 2 times in the cinema, thinking about 3rd time. It's first time ever when I'm ready to pay for the tickets to see movie again in the cinema and surely will buy Blue ray. Very important thing is that you have to watch it first in IMAX 3D, it makes you feel really engaged in it. As far as I see, many people are really thinking about Alita as manga/anime adaptation. Personally I haven't heard about the comics before the movie, only after. I just saw several trailers and decided to check it out straight in the cinema. I would say that it's pretty big mistake to advertise and portray it mainly as an anime adaptation. Because many people don't really know a lot about anime culture in general and even think that it's weird, etc. In reality this movie is for everyone, you don't need to know anything about original anime story, with fresh mind I think it's even better to get the movie right.

The visual side is done perfectly. Cameron, Landau and Rodriguez team is really on top of that game. I don't really understand why it has been criticized by some critics for the scenario. It's understandable if you're huge original anime fan and got own vision on how it should be done. Otherwise it's just not right to criticize the entertainment movie that way. It's obviously not a movie like a Green Book, which scenario is pretty simple, but very human. Comparing it with Avatar or Ready Player One, I can say that Alita's story is more interesting for me and I won't call it a standard scenario. Surely the main hero Alita is just lovely, not sure why her eyes are an issue for some people, but they look fantastic. Also, she smiles a lot in the movie and that's catching as well. She is naive and idealistic, that's why it's really easy to fell in love with her. Rosa Salazar bravo. General cast is great and everyone is fitting characters really well. Hopefully we'll see all of them in the second and third parts, one movie is simply not enough for Alita's story.

Not sure why is not doing perfect on the domestic market and hope that things will improve. International audience love this movie and it feels like China and Japan are ready to help with earnings. Let's support our Battle Angel and show production team that we want more of it.

Downside? Motorball is rubbish. Movie should have been more self-contained. The goal should have been the immediately reachable one, the problems at hand should have been harder to overcome to make this movie feel complete.
Should have avoided showing too much about the overall goal for now. The movie was made with sequels that may or may not happen in mind. It should have been made as a self-contained story, with threads that can be tapped for sequels (a la the first Star Wars)

Which is really impressive. You think to yourself I couldn't tell...at all. Alita: Battle Angel is faithful to the Manga in a good way. With some minor changes to suite the film format. To be any better it would have had to be a 3-4 hour long film in ala LOTR honestly... I hope the sequels are a little longer. The Villians are not as violent as in the Manga, it would have balanced out Alita's response to them if they were presented as such. A lot of people will watch Alita because they know then story and were looking forward to the adaptation for those people it's perfect. Expand

On one hand, we're told that such a character must be a victim of "the patriarchy," which turns her cold, angry, and self-serving--which is what we have with Marvel's newly christened "most powerful superhero ever, "Captain Marvel." She exists because of political agendas and ugly feelings towards men, capitalized by Brie Larson, playing the title role, whose irrational, unfettered hatred towards other people should make her most worthy of the part of the hero's antagonist rather than one who the world should look to as their hope and a role model for others to admire.

As can be seen by the shills in the movie critique community, all sorts of excuses can and will be made for a film with a political agenda. Money drives today's politics and social experimentation, so, sadly, a large portion of "film critics" have sold their souls in order to save "Captain Marvel" from itself, in order to, somehow, plant the seed in impressionable minds that this film is THE future of cinematic heroism, to fundamentally change what it is to be known as "heroic."

Then, we have Alita: Battle Angel, a title out of Japan, known basically by only the most committed fans of anime and manga, whose story doesn't have any political agendas or desire to change anyone or anything. The title character is a female warrior who has lost memories of her past and is restored from her wrecked physical form by a benevolent doctor, who gives her the body he had hoped to give his ailing daughter before she is killed.

Given that the story has no political or social agenda, Alita is presented as a relatively normal young woman, who is initially saddened by her loss of memory and not knowing who or where she is but becomes excited to learn more about her surroundings. There are good and bad things happening, and as the story progresses, Alita learns that her circumstances are rather dire, but she regains, little by little, her memories until she becomes confident that she's a warrior who will defend herself and those she loves.

Two things that I see are impactful in Alita: Battle Angel, firstly, she is a young woman who behaves like a young woman who desires relationships with other people. She doesn't discriminate about who she wants to befriend, apart from knowing who behaved, decent people are, and those who would take advantage and harm her. This creates in the audience empathy for her, and most people immediately like her because of her troubles and the way that she carries herself through them.

Secondly, it becomes obvious that once she comes to the realization of her fighting abilities and penchant respond appropriately in dangerous circumstances that, all in all, Alita's character is handled masterfully. She's always the precocious young woman who hopes for a brighter tomorrow, but she's also aware of what danger that she's currently in. She also falters and nearly fails, since the burden she has taken upon herself, to preserve the lives of those she cares for, is almost overwhelming. Everything about Alita turns you towards her and you sincerely want for her to succeed, because she has her own personal desires, but those desires include preserving those who are important to her. There are indeed times when this film seems long, especially during the times between Alita and Hugo, the "romantic love-interest" in it, but that certainly isn't enough to smother the other plot elements driving the story forward. Also, those familiar with the source material for Alita: Battle Angel are at a huge advantage over those who are being introduced to her in this movie. That's undoubtedly true for anyone familiar with a novel, events in history, or in this case a comic book series, but it being something far more foreign than something from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has also given "film critics" the opportunity to judge it more harshly than they would for movies about American "superheroes." But, ultimately, this is very unfair, especially for many who have immersed ourselves into the other media created about Alita. We know who she is, far better than the critics who have responded to Alita: Battle Angel with a good measure of disdain.

Yes, a movie should stand on its own regardless of its sources, and anyone watching it should get a good grounding into what is happening with a character and why events are happening. If there is anything "bad" to be said about Alita: Battle Angel, it's that it can leave the uninitiated with feelings of confusion regarding all that's going on. However, it seems very hypocritical to me that so many American reviewers will see a similar film with similar unfamiliar expectations and be swayed by the "message" of it, completely overlooking all of its many flaws.

I'm just glad to see so many people who go to movies to enjoy themselves are enjoying this movie. Personally, I love it.

The only major issue is the attempt to compress more than 3 graphic novels into just 1 Film (merely 2 hours long) representing a massive (if not impossible) challenge - the Film adaptation appears to portray the best attempt (to please everyone or as much of the audience as possible). Hopefully a 3+ hour long R-Rated extended (uncut) version will be released in the near future (which flesh out each character exactly as it was done in the manga).

Japanese Manga loves to stretch major plot lines over hundreds (some literally nearly a thousand) episodes, so it's impossible to please everyone, especially (I suspect) most western audience who have been culturally brought up to expect plot resolution within (merely) 3 Film (Trilogies).

Battle Angel begins at the bottom or the worse possible location (the junk/scrape yard of a civilization) & the 1st graphic novel intentionally portrayed that there is an even lower level/world (the sewers), from then-on Alita slowly begins moving up in the world. Therefore, the first few graphic novels were (to me, personally) the most boring story arcs of the entire Battle Angel Manga. This has me (as a fan) worried concerning how this film adaptation expects to draw in new audiences/fans while depicting (what was to me) the most boring story arcs in the entire Battle Angel Manga? Considering that if this Film does not perform: will the better/superior story arcs in this manga ever be adapted as well in the future?

I'm willing to pay for at least 3 3D IMAX tickets to Alita's sequel(s) right now (even if the sequel itself comes out after 2025).

CGI can be a bit spotty in places but for such an ambitious movie, I'm not going to complain. Loved Alita's characterisation; she brought the comic to life. Salazar brought exactly the right mix of super-tough-warrior and vulnerable girl to make it work. Not sure she's been given enough credit for this as it's harder than you may imagine.

Christppher Waltz also does a great job of Ido. When I heard they'd cast him in the role, my first thought was that he was a bit too old but he pulls it off with aplomb.

Came out of the movie feeling uplifted. Definitely going to add this one to my permanent collection on DVD/Google play

Having said that, I found myself mesmerized. The movie, visually, is the best kind of eye candy you can have in a movie, and the action was fantastic, to say the least. However, all of that would have fallen short had there not been a great story to go along with it. The characters were mostly fleshed out and Alita's character was extremely relatable. This character should be the poster child of Female Empowerment, and I can't for the life of me tell why Alita isn't being celebrated. To those that say she was overly sexualized I say, you are a moron! There was nothing sexual about this character or anything about this movie that was sexual other than the kiss. She is a female cyborg... please spare me the BS and Political Rhetoric! I hope the success of this movie is a slap in the proverbial face to all its critics. Expand

Much like Avatar, there is a simpleness to the plot/story which are appreciated in this kind of a film. There is also a nice effort to focus on some messaging that is more neutral in tone as compared to other contemporary flicks such as Captain Marvel which is quite heavy handed. For Alita, she learns that her body is “just a shell” and that she must decide how to use it. There are a few weak points in the film, the most pronounced for me is the male lead who lacks the verve I’d expect at this level; the chemistry wasn’t there for me. This is something you can zone out and watch. Pure eye candy with little twists that you miss if aren’t paying attention for a few seconds. I give it an 85% Expand

This movie is a good example of anime/manga adaptation done well.

As someone who occasionally watches anime, I found that Alita was a perfect mix of anime inspired characters and sci-fi. The CGI was really well done and everything looked "natural".

Rosa Salazar was just amazing as Alita. The character development was emotional and didn't feel forced.

Looking back, I feel bad that I initially dismissed the movie based on the critics reviews. When a movie is stuck in your head for days after seeing it, there must have been something magical about it. Can’t wait for the sequel :)

But the central movie line is about Alita, her journey from an insignificant girl to a fearless warrior, with a pure heart and strong character.
From the beginning to the end, you have an emotional connection with her, from the first breath and open eyes to show yourself the world to first innocent love and fight with evil, all it's possible because she represents human values at the subconscious level.
The Battle Angel shows us a new level of CGI effects with amazing Rosa Salazar performance on set, you really believe in her existence.
These qualities make Alita is the most adorable heroine and one of the best movies at all time.

In 2009 avatar impressed audiences with its spectacular visual achievements while also criticised for weak story and poor dialogue. It is a shame then that while CGI continues to improve the stories that often occumpany these big flashy movies do not. Alita is a film adaption of a Japanese manga book, Admittedly, one I have no experience with, I have consumed others such as ghost in the shell, so their nature is not a complete mystery to me but I had not heard of Alita until the film was announced. The best a film can do for me in this scenario is get me excited for the world its set on and the characters involved. So much so that I am yearning to go back and read the source material. In this the film succeeds, the brief glimpses we get of Alitas back story and the world surrounding her are exciting and interesting. The urge to learn more about this world is built up but never rewarded in the film. It's a shame then that the film is constistant at pulling us away from these engaging back stories and into the films present day in which the story is par for the course and seems very menial. We get the feeling that the most interesting part of the story has already happened and we missed it. Instead we are trying to get invested in a teenage girls day to day activities in a town we don't know enough about.

The characters and the visual representation is the films strong point. Alita is show as a deadly warrior that holds a certain fear in people who know what she is. The action portray this well as she zips around and tackles beings multiple times her size. The CGI is some of the best you will see. Alita her is the definition of uncanny Valley. Every close up of her expressions and movement is a sight to behold. Acted out very well we see alita angry, sad, frantic, happy, excited, nervous... Just about every emotion and they are all portrayed very well. Alita is a fun ride with impressive CGI and good characters. The story is slow and does nothing to surprise and feels like it grinds to halt In multiple areas. The film teases enough of a world and story that will leave alot of people asking for a sequel and I would be first in line to see it.

Not a "bad" adaptation, but not great either. The bad:
Characters and their dialogue could have been tweaked to better bring out the emotion and conviction (motivation) of each character. Surprisingly, the emotion and conviction shown by Alita's character (even though CGI) is amazing. The actress (Rosa Salazar) clearly was more self-aware of her facial and emotional expressions, because she had a ton of sensors on her face following every tiny change of expression. I can't help but feel that the rest of the actors needed this as well to convey their emotion and conviction just as well...
Pacing issues were scattered throughout this movie, from character introductions (e.g. Chiran, Hugo, thug gang etc. ) to locations (e.g. broken down space ship, games arena etc.).
Unfortunately, the movie adaptation misses out on what makes the anime's atmosphere very gritty, dark, mesmerizing and frightening. The anime contained many shocks and unexpected moments...

The good:
The story was likeable and decent, even though it has pacing issues. Alita's emotional acting and her conviction to her ultimate goal are solidly engraved into the movie's core, albeit helped by the CGI. Although, even her character suffered from some poor dialogue choices.
Many scenes are almost identical to the anime, which is a nice touch for hardcore fans out there.
The action scenes and the environment are on a whole new level! They are some of the best action scenes and environments I have seen! The attention to detail and fluidity of movement is incredible. It has been a long time since a movie has completely amazed me with it's action scenes, which is not what I normally focus on or care about. But it has to be brought to attention for this movie.
Overall I would say it's worth seeing at the cinema. It's an interesting and entertaining story for the most part! Really hope, if there is a sequel, they pay more attention to dialogue and pacing of the story, because this movie could have easily been a 9 or 10!

As an adaptation of a Manga, it doesn't wear its philosophy on its sleeve, doesn't plaster its message over every surface. And it uses larger than life characters while still making everything seem down to earth - in a science fiction movie. It just doesn't fit the mold.

It is a beautiful movie, in visuals, plot and emotion, and as a fan of the Manga I thoroughly approve. The only reason I can't give a 10 is that it still feels a little crammed...although Rodriguez did a great job keeping everything clean and simple in a movie chock full of moments. Even then I know where they were coming from. There really isn't anything you could take away without seriously detracting from the story, the worldbuilding or the characters. I get why they whittled down the Makaku arch (which is a pity, but it alone wouldn't fill a movie and would feel too Marvel-like - they honor the missing character by not calling his stand-in big bad non-character Makaku) and so they needed to get somewhere with the movie, maxing out the acceptable runtime and filling it up to the notch - but in a (mostly) good way! Another little issue is that they made some changes that cranked up the heroic aspects of Alita (and, especially, her old self).
The changes to the Manga mostly don't hurt and are usually understandable. Some even showed me that "streamlining" can be a good thing. What they did with the berserker backstory makes a lot of sense and plays up the uncomfortable aspects of the main character.

Talking about eerieness: Not that they needed it (the visuals are gorgeous!), but this is the first movie where the uncanny valley effect was used to help a movie, instead of unintentionally hindering it. Alita's huge eyes make her seem somewhat alien, but endearing, but the other cyborg characters often seem jarring, especially Zapan and one of the cyborgs in the ambush early on, which fits the movie perfectly! After all, it is (among other things) a movie about how technology interacts with people - how we use it to miraculous effect and for petty monstrosities alike. No one could embody that better than Desty Nova, who remains elusive throughout the movie, as well he should. I hope we'll see more of him, and that Edwart Norton will do him justice in a second movie!

Excellent movie. The re-creation is very faithful to the source material (with elements from the Manga and from the Anime) and the way they blended the three story arcs of the original manga was great.
The production and visual elements were outstanding, and Alita was a very charismatic character.
My only complaint is about Hugo, he starts ok but at some point start making no sense, he felt superficial at times, without the more deep motivations of the source material.
In any case, it was a great action movie and an excellent time.
My wife knew nothing about the manga/anime and loved the movie, because it was beautiful and fun.

The weakness lies with the dialogue, which may have been intentional in order to cater to a younger audience. That said: it doesn't talk down to the younger ones about the harder character moments. I feel the critics were expecting something different, but this isn't the only film of the season where we're seeing that. A little more workshopping on the dialogue and it would have been a 8 or 9 from me. If it doesn't demand a trip to the cinema, any sci-fi or anime fan should give it a look in the wild. Expand

It is an great movie for any anime, sci-fi, action, thriller fan. Alita, the main character is a very likable and strong female. Please don't be put off by anything the critics say. Go watch it and see for yourself. To me, this movie deserves more attention and definitely a sequel. If you're a geek like me, trust me, you'll fall in love with this movie and almost all of its characters. GO WATCH IT!!!!!!!!! Expand

ALITA is the new WONDER WOMAN. If you liked Wonder Woman movie, this is the next one with high-energy, feminine intensity, inetlligence and passion for using force to protect the weak and willing to use force to combat injustice. DON'TALITA is the new WONDER WOMAN. If you liked Wonder Woman movie, this is the next one with high-energy, feminine intensity, inetlligence and passion for using force to protect the weak and willing to use force to combat injustice. DON'T LISTEN TO THE PROFESSIONAL CRITICS. Alita was much better than the pro critics led me to believe. Many critics reviewed it like a Fast & Furious movie: multiple action set-pieces jammed together until time's up. ALITA HAS AN EXCEPTIONAL SCRIPT AND NUANCED PERFORMANCES. ALITA IS NOT A "BLOCKBUSTER." Rather it takes the genre of the ScarJo Ghost in the Shell (2017) and aims it towards audience identification with an impassioned female hero, trying to make the world a better place, as in Wonder Woman. This is Jim Cameron and Robert Rodriguez at their best. GO SEE THIS :)

PS: The next Wonder Woman-like movie is likely to be Captain Marvel. The women are taking over because their value system is the antidote for how men have made a mess of things. I believe movies like WW and Alita are part of women waking up to their healthy feminine power and how it can be used in politics and the real world.

Great movie. Unique enough story line with great visuals. ScreenX experience was pretty cool but definitely not a requirement. Critic reviews have it a bit under-rated.
