I really don't understand why the critics thought this was boring. Alita was caring and sweet but also really cool, she is the reason the movie is as good as it is. However, I think the biggest reason to see this movie is the visual spectacle, comparable at times even to movies like Avatar in beauty and world design. Go see this movie so we can get a sequel. Yes there's many things that any true hardcore fan might have to say about it, I am probably the biggest Gunnm fan worldwide myself (have been for 20 years). BUT so many things about this movie are beyond astonishing, like I cried and shattered like a little girl in the theatre and I still have goosebumps trying to internalise all I experienced from watching it twice already. The fight with Makaku oh man... I almost passed out. What we have here is what I consider the single most incredible action scene in any movie ever.
Absolutely mind-blowing.
The way I feel about it is so ridiculous that I can't even consider sharing it with anyone irl. So I'm just gonna let this here.

10/10 ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE

The fight scenes are excellent, visually spectacular without being over the top. The characters are a bit simplistic but for the most part sincerely depicted. The story follows the plot of the anime movie faithfully while adding more details that flesh out the world and Alita as a character. It explains how her abilities work and why she is able to do things other cyborgs can't. Most aspects of the world are justified, although the society and politics seem overly simplistic and small in scale. There were multiple areas I thought the movie could be better, I found very few aspects out right bad. Sure, there is some cheesy dialog but no more than the average Marvel movie. Some of characters were over the top and one dimensional but considering how much the story had to introduce, it did a good job of making the plot clear while fleshing out the world in an interesting way. I have read complaints that the movie is a setup for a sequel, I liked that, I would rather have them lay the ground work for something bigger than just make it a one off that explains everything in an overly simplistic way. The movie left me wanting more, better that than to leave the audience with a basic yet conclusive ending. Most of the best series leave you wanting more because they hint at bigger events, that's a sign they are building on something substantial and have planned ahead. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, the Matrix, etc. Most good series spend a lot of time introducing ideas that aren't explained by the end of the first entry. A sequel is almost never a guarantee, it certainly wasn't for the original Star Wars but including hints of a bigger world made it a better movie. We may never get a sequel to ALITA but at least this movie made me want one and provided enough ideas to justify one. While I found the tone of the story a little bit too light hearted, it somewhat made sense considering Alita's personal experience. The world is shown from the perspective of someone who is new to it and hasn't had to face the hardships of it until near the end. She sees things with a fresh sense of wonder and naivety rather than horror and apprehension. That was fine but I feel it shouldn't have been the case for the side characters. It would have been more interesting if they contrasted Alita's naive optimism with a the cynicism of her peers who have really had to struggle to get by in the harsh reality of Iron city. It is a world where body harvesting, poverty and mutilation are commonplace, it would be a very scary place for most of the citizens, yet the story never gives a sense of that desperation. Sure Yugo and his gang represent the grey area of society but they came across as far too idealistic rather than desperate. It would have been nice to see Alita's idealism challenged by other characters who don't have the advantage of being as powerful as she is.

The world building was pretty good but I did have some complaints. While Iron City is supposed to be massive it never seems bigger than a few square blocks. Outside of the skyline and wide angle shots showing a sprawling city everything shown seems limited in scope and the amount of control held by just a few sources seems way too dominant. There isn't a sense of a complex social/political systems, or even rival gangs and people of disconnected interests competing for advancement. It seems more like a high school sized society with a one dimensional hierarchy. I understand that it is hard to build complexity in the span of one movie but I think others movies have done a far better job of implying that kind of depth.

Overall I would say that Alita is a fun, visually spectacular movie with enough substance to make it worthy of a sequel. On the negative side it lacks depth, has some cheesy dialogue, cliches and side characters that lack believe-ability. It has short comings but it gets enough of the big things right to make it worth watching and well above average.

I really like the sounds and the music was sensational. There were a couple of moments with emotions, but this film is mainly for the action and the visuals. I give it a 78%. It's a nice adaptation and also experiment in visuals. Now I really want to read the Manga! Expand

And on top of that we have an excellent effects, dynamic fights (i personally think it's the new TOP for CGI fights), interesting plot and compelling characters (most of them).
So, i really recommend to go and see it for yourself. It's the best sci-fi movie of 2019 yet, and probably will remain like that till the end of the year.

I love this movie. Here is my review on it

The year is 2563. 300 years after “The Fall” (big war), Iron City is left decimated in a dystopian like society when Alita was found at a scrap pile in a futuristic junk yard. When recovered and put back together with a new cyborg body by Dr. Dyson, she doesn’t remember anything of her past nor recognizes the current world. As the story progresses she finds clues to her identity, past life, where she came from, and what she was born to do. Alita is the advanced teenage cyborg solider who finds her identity and purpose in life through flash backs of her past. She builds a beautiful father-and-daughter relationship with Dr. Dyson and builds a romantic relationship with her boyfriend Hugo. She’s strong and courageous with the love and compassion of a young girl and a beating heart of a warrior. I rooted and cared so much for her throughout the whole movie.

CGI and visuals is breathtaking. Of course they used a lot of actual sets as well throughout the movie. These are the same people that made Avatar with James Cameron so you know it’s going to look great. Alita’s eyes are so very life like. They truly captured the spirit and emotion of Rosa Salazar into Alita with all of the different sensors she wore. Your conscious mind will always be accepting Alita as a human and not a CGI person.

This movie is a true fun and entertaining underdog story with, action, adventure, romance, mystery, and with lots of heart. I love this movie

Rewatchable?: YES!
Would I go to theaters again to see it?: YES!
Was I wanting more when the credits start rolling?: YES!
Forgettable Movie?: NO!
My Rating: 9 out of 10- Had some flaws so it doesn’t get a 10.

Viewers can see how far James Cameron go since Avatar.
A decent story. the pace of story telling is a bit rushed because it has enough plot for multiple movies.
It's an adoption from a 30 year-old Japanese Manga which is considered one of the greatest sci-fi / cyberpunk story.
I haven't read the source material, but I still enjoy the movie a lot.

I've done something I never did before: watch a movie 3 times, and I rarely watch a movie twice.
Gosh, if someone ask me to join his/her trip to this movie, I would still go for my 4th time.

This is how much I like it.

As a fan of Gunnm, the manga, I was really worried about this adaptation... Indeed, I have a huge respect for Gally/ Alita, supposed to be an unapologetic, badass, and a little bit naive heroin (she tries too much to be Human!). And I must admit Robert / James Cameron did an AMAZING adaptation with this. It's not "perfect" (does perfection even exist...?), but Alita Battle Angel is a movie that non-fans can understand and enjoy as well as the fans. Why ? Because they respected the universe of the original, it's long enough to describe the story and it permits Alita to grow in front of our eyes. I had some problems connecting with Yugo (no background story !) but it wasn't huge, and it was to put the spotlight on Alita/ Ido. The world was beautifully made, but felt a bit "lighter", maybe to please a more "mainstream" audience. Blue blood for cyborgs was a good idea ! But don't worry: there still is blood and some hard scenes (or suggested, at least). This movie made Gally even more human than in the manga, I really felt like it was HER. The actress s choice was perfect. The Eyes ? Not as disturbing as everyone was saying...

The relationship between Yugo and Alita was a little cheesy, but hey, don't you ever been a teenager ? It participated in her "humanisation" I would say. The battles were as good as in the manga, with amazing effects (I had to contain myself not to turn crazy everytime Alita would beat the f* out of those pretentious cyborgs!) and not only myself, but everyone was stunned during those moments. I was expecting more battles and a darker aspect of the city but that's it !
I've seen the movie 3 times and I enjoyed every minutes. This movie is the rebirth of a heroin, who, I felt, has always earned to be known by the whole world. For more philosophy, you have to wait for a sequel because Alita is barely remembering her past in the first mangas, and in this movie. The bad reception is totally undeserved. There are plenty of scenes questioning her identity, her more human side, but maybe critics weren't getting it, huh ?

To sum up, Alita is a must-watch if you like SF, Battles, and STORIES. There's also a philosophical question surrounding cyborgs, identity (for those who pay attention), and a strong female lead. Will Alita become the next badass heroin of our decade ? I HOPE SO. (Captain Marvel is probably shaking in her costume. And so is Lara Croft !)

I'm waiting for the next movie - a french fan.

чуть ли не 100 процентным рейтингом и абсолютно отвратительным фильмом в результате, так и в этот раз я чуть не передумал пойти на Алиту потому что критики дали ей средне - негативную оценку. This was a fantastic movie with some of the best action scenes I've seen in years and a stunning cyberpunk world that feels believable.

My only criticisms are (1) some character backstories are not fleshed out as well as they were in the original manga, but that's understandable given the runtime limits, (2) it's clearly one story in a longer story, which may disappoint viewers who aren't aware of that, and (3) the city was too clean.

Overall was great fun though, and I'm looking forward to seeing it a second time.

It's a flawed movie but also one of the best live action adaptation of anime and manga by Hollywood to date.

+ Fantastic CGI. Alita is very real and alive when watched in IMAX 3D.
+ Brilliant fighting choreography that are very anime-ish and have never been seen on the big screen before.
+ Rosa Salazar's impressive delivery as Alita is very endearing especially for manga fans.
+ The most violent and brutal PG13 movie that I have ever seen and the one time use of F-bomb is awesome.

- Some of the script and dialogue are cringy if you're not used to anime and manga.
- Villains are mostly mediocre except Ed Skrein's Zapan and another "hidden boss" that may only fully appear in the sequel.
- There is a romance story that people may find unbelievable.

I gave it 10/10 simply because I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and awe-strucked by its faithfulness to the original manga. Hopefully Hollywood would do more excellent live action adaptation of anime and manga in the future.

One of them felt like a movie they cared about at the time of making, whileAlita Battle Angel and Dragonball Evolution are both made by FOX. One of them has a huge change in enjoyability and rewatches, while the other is full-on Disgrace Mode. One of them felt like a movie they cared about at the time of making, while the other one was easily dead on arrival.
And that should already tell you how FOX changed every single card to try and make Alita Battle Angel a fantastic time at the movies. Because it is. (what a surprise!) It's also the kind of Set-Up Movie that movies like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or (more recently) Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom wanted to be. But we'll talk about that later. For now, let's start with the positives.
As of every Blockbuster Set-Up movie, there are big chunks of exposition (oh hell…),but, not being one with the Manga it's based on,sometimes was on board with the explanation. Everyone lives in this futuristic albeit trashy city, full of people with robotic parts, bounty hunters, cyborg mercenaries, and there's a competition called Motorball, where it's Indy 500,Soccer and big battles to the last...wire? Hey,having mentioned the Champions League in that scene,it made me excited for the future of Soccer. Just imagine…
Anywho, whoever wins many Motorball competitions will have the chance to go to Salem, which is described as a flawless city. That alone, and the way the trashy city works makes up for enough detail (and Visuals) of its own to distract the movie from stuff like Blade Runner (which felt like a heavy inspiration). And the Screenplay has enough meat to make us care about most of the characters, right down to the scientist Ido,who's played by Christoph Waltz.
And NO,Alita's big buggy eyes weren't a distraction in this movie. Consider those as more of an Anime-esque touch to the character.
The Visuals in this movie are indeed awesome and YES,the action scenes are enthralling, which is to be expected from Robert Rodriguez (director) and James Cameron (producer). All of it fueled with Adrenaline thanks to a fantastic score by Junkie XL (that makes up for the disaster of Mortal Engines,Tom…). And just like every James Cameron movie, the use of 3D is just as staggering as Avatar, and it totally helped the viewing experience. As always, please go see it in IMAX 3D.
If anything,it'll be the best 3D Experience of 2019 so far. The Motorball sequence is brutal, mean, fast, and it's easily one of my favourite Action sequences of all time. It's up there with the train sequence from Spider-Man 2. Now with the Set-Up bit, what I was trying to say is that it's the closest thing to a great Set-Up movie of this caliber: one that narrates a pretty great story with, maybe, too much exposition, but at the same time makes us care for these characters. It's not lazily shown to us like Jurassic World 2 and it's not “in your face” at the end of it like The Amazing Spider-Man 2. (Don't count Spider-Verse,because that's a whole other story)
It's just sad to report that, after the Mototorball sequence, the movie goes overdrive and becomes seriously cheesy. “Seriously” because seeing the 3rd Act made me think of Rodriguez and Cameron having the time of their life writing the script until the Motorball scene, where they were like “Oh no,what are we gonna do now to burn some more meat?” Oh,I see. Try to bang our heads to the wall by making us care about the unnecessary romance relationship, which later on goes full YA Love Story, although it's kinda justified (?) because some of the reactions make it feel like an actual Anime (even if that means going full-on Mulan 2 in one scene).
The villains can also be “Unusual” at times,as Mahershala Ali clearly thinks he’s in another movie, and Jennifer Connelly channels some form of emotion in her trademark “franchise acting”,only this time no coffy voice from Hulk (2003). Once in a while, there’s a bit too much exposition...Even the little things need the biggest of expositions, but it’s more likely you’ll remember the more important parts. Either the city or the bounty hunter plot you’ll most remember. If you’ll forget the big 3rd Act mess, then you’ll have a great time at Alita Battle Angel. Not knowing anything about the source material,I’m super excited to see where they’ll go next. Yes,James Cameron and Jon Landau are the better versions of Avi Arad and Alex Kurtzman, and I’m super shocked by it...But also fascinated...

His actual face looks more like Makaku, why'd they make him into a generic russian thug? tearstearstears), and making iron city look somewhat pleasant to live in, I was surprised by how accurately they translated the manga into this film. It felt like I was watching a big budget anime, as opposed to the more commonly horrible, cringy anime adaptations that often happen. Whereas I never want to see another Johansson GITS, I would love for Alita to do well enough to continue her story in a couple more films, as long as they keep staying true to the story's origins. If I weren't such a fan of the original books I might not have been as taken by this film, but they did good, and I'm grateful for the hard work and time and attention to detail. Of course, Salazar's Alita and Waltz' Ido are the shining lights here, besides the amazing effects and cyborg designs and fun action sequences. Worth seeing on the big screen. Expand

It has its flaws (which doesn’t?), but for sure it is not 5/10 as critics would like you to believe. I’ve seen it two times already and the pacing is perfect - action and slower scenes are nicely mixed throughout the whole movie, so it doesn’t overwhelm nor bore you. The story is sometimes a little rushed, but it bothered me only the first time I was watching the movie, so most likely it was due to being hyper-hyped by the superb trailers ;-).
The IMAX presentation is perfect and fighting scenes are the best of the best. I really hope this movie turns into a franchise, because - apart from expected sequel - possibilities for games, toys and tie-ins are endless here...

Lets get out of the way the silliness and absurd-ism that the film basks in, as this is to be expected of a manga adaptation that stays true to it's source material. This seems for many to be the film's big critique, while for others it is an aspect of it's unique identity. If you are not familiar with manga and anime, and are are a self professed snob at the theaters, this may not be the film for you. For everyone else, they seem to be unanimously praising it as a flawed but fun and engrossing film. I have to agree. Come ready to watch with your brain turned off and your eyes wide open, while realizing that this is essentially an anime come to life. With all that accounted for, I think you will enjoy the ride as I did. Expand

Flaws are outweight by the freshness and the strenghts of the movie, therefore 10 stars ! Alita has the freedom to be treated as a great character and not as a vehicle for a polical statement. A huge leap forward in any instance. She is a great, strong, relatable, female character.

A universal human experience !

Thoughtfully planned, thoroughly executed, beautifully crafted. Jim Cameron and Robert Rodriguez really raised the bar with this movie.

Fight scenes are gloriously over the top as well. No shaky camera or excessive cuts when it comes to fights in Alita: Battle Angel. I always knew what was happening.

The story of Alita: Battle Angel isn't perfect, and does contain a few clichés, but that doesn't hold a movie like this one back. I was too busy leaning forward in my chair with my jaw dropped to put on my critic monocle. Don't listen to the critics for this one. Do yourself a favor and see this movie. It's simply awesome - that's all there is to say.

Originally written and almost directed by the king of the box office, James Cameron, has accomplished something that no other filmmaker has successfully took on which is making a great anime live action film that actually works quite well with the anime source material. Sometimes, the revised script and direction by El Mariachi/Machete/Sin City/’s Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron’s longtime partner Laeta Kalogridis hits and misses the important cues when it comes to hitting the right notes of the film, but the whole overall feel of this movie did justice on balancing the action and visual intensity just right. And I am pleased to report that Rosa Salazar kicks major cyborg ass as Alita. Did Alita: Battle Angel broke the live action anime film adaptation curse? Yes, if I were you, go ahead and experience this visual feast. Expand

American critics needs to get their head out their asses.
Seriously, any marvel or star wars movie gets a 75 metascore, but any blockbusters that tries to do things differently gets murdered by critics.
Now for my opinion on this movie.
I'm a fan of the manga, and I loved the movie. They really managed to cram everything that was needed to tell a consistent story, they stayed true to the material, the spirit and the violence.
The movie manage to be more emotional and a bit more lighthearted, but this is not a unicorn version. It's gunnm in all its Glory.
Alita feels different, but the character is so fascinating, and the eyes gives so much emotions to the character, it's hard not to fall for her, she is so powerful and yet so full of emotion.
The only change that was disappointing, is with Yugo, in the manga, the character is literally consumed by his goal to go the zalem. I didn't feel that, especially in the key scene at the end of the movie, to me it was a really important part of the material and I don't know why they did not keep it.
Otherwise, outstanding work, the decors, the designs, the action scenes are just amazing.
A must watch

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. FIRST off... the critics dont know what they are even criticizing. They talk about things as if they didnt know what they were looking at. If your familiar with the source material youll be very happy. If not than expect a very differant movie from anything thats out there.

Saw it and loved it. Initially i was put off by the big eyes, but as I saw the movie it didnt bother me. Alita blended in with the live action very well. And Her facial expressions are what caught my attention and made me care for the character. There is an emotional aspect to Alita that is endearing. You root for her, you feel for both her Victories and losses. FOR THE GENERAL AUDIENCE: Its entertaining, Action is well done, Characters are well written and the CG effects are awesome. You will fall in love with the character. She is indearing. The issue for some, might be the pacing. For those unfamiliar with the source material, the story moves along pretty fast and its hard to get why everything is happening. Alot is going on and you dont know why. First off you wont have an origin story or know about her past or whats up in the floating city or about the main villian. That is because the story is very long and these things are revealed accross multiple books. The movie is all SETUP and CHARACTER DRIVEN. Alita embodies strength and endearing qualities in one. She is deadly but also very human. Her losses and victories shape her character and that is what drives the Narrative of the movie. So dont expect everything to be explained. Again and its very important, those things that were not revealed is what drives the narrative and events of whats to come. Thats why it cant be revealed now. It will mess up how the story is told. The story of Alita is huge. Nova is a Villian that expands many volumes of books. He is a very intricate and complicated villian. The truth about Zalem and its inhabitants, the Truth about Alita, once revealed are catalysts that drive other portions of the story. What your getting here is an introduction to Alita and her world. FOR THE FANS OF THE COMICS/ANIME: This is one of those things that never happen and if they do, they happen once in a life time. Whether your a fan of Battle Angel Alita or not, if you love Anime, you owe it to yourself to go see and support this. As a fan of the original comics and OVA, you will be disappointed by the lighter tone of the movie when compared to the darker and grittier tone of the book. The feeling of Dread in Iron City is not as pronounced as it is in the books. But understand, if your making a movie that cost 200million dollars, it has to appeal to more than just fans of the book. I can let this slide. And its almost a shot for shot take on the original Animated OVA. So any fans of the OVA will be happy about that. The big eyes, again, its stops bothering you soon after Alita is introduced. Notable differences from the Anime, is Chirens Hair color is black and not Blonde, Chiren and Ido had a Daughter, Ido's mark on his forehead is gone. But its addressed in the movie. Motorball is introduced as an element to drive the narrative and it succeeds very well. You get a few flash backs into her past and a vague introduction to Desty Nova. The cast resembles the comicbook counter parts very well. I was happy with the casting. Both, Hugo and Ido were done right and the same goes for Alita. Again dont worry about the big eyes. If anything it makes Alita her own character and the facial expressions were very well done.

CONCLUSION: I thoroughly enjoyed it. Go see it, whether your invested in the story and characters or not, its worth your money, just for the CGI alone, action and entertainment value.

If this film engaged my anti-Marvel, Star Wars wife then I believe I found a winner. I really hope this film does well and that we get a sequel. Bonus Round: I love that this film had a strong female hero while simultaneously not shoving SJW quasi social philosophy down the audience’s throat. At it's core this is a big budget fan film that remains incredibly faithful to the source material which is certain rare in Hollywood. The problem with fan films is that they never speak to film critics the same way as they speak to the target audience. As a result (which you can see in the review scores) you have critics being very "meh" about the film, while the audience tends to lean more towards loving, especially fans of the original Japanese Manga. Here is the thing, before this film I had never heard of Alita in my life. I am a casual anime fan at best, and mostly have a passive appreciation for manga and anime. I went into Alita with no expectations other than maybe hoping it would be fun. When I came out of the movie, I immediately went to Amazon and bought every volume of the Alita manga collection available to me. This film made me a fan. It's fantastic. Alita as a character is so wonderfully done in this film (which translates well from the manga I've been told), and you quickly find yourself able to be in her shoes. Her memory is shot and this world is new to her, just like it is to me having no experience beforehand. While there is a quite a bit of exposition that explains the world, the story itself moves so freely that you understand the world quickly and easily. There are no long winded speeches here about this society versus that society and what's evil and why we don't like this guy or that guy, no the movie manages to weave the story and the backstory together in such a way that it all comes together perfectly. Alita herself is a little beast, Rosa Salazar does a super job at convincing us that she knows how to fight for herself. The visuals are some of the best CG effects ever which bring to life both the beauty and the violence of the world Alita finds herself in. The Villains all bring the film together, while not playing a super large part in the film itself, they do serve their roles very well to act as motivators for what pushes Alita forward towards conflict. The only negative I'd have to say is that the romance in the film is a bit childish. Like a teen film in a lot of ways, but from what I've been told, it is very similar to how the manga portrays Alita's first love. So I can forgive it, especially since the romance doesn't overpower the rest of the film. Like the villains, the romance is just another part of this weaving narrative that brings the movie together. At the end of the day, the film is just freaking fun. It's a great time, and it made me a fan of this world and this character. I want to see more of Alita and I hope this film does well enough for them to make more movies. Expand

I would like to offer my spoiler-free thoughts on Alita:Battle Angel for both those new to the franchise and fans of the source material (as I have been for 24 years).

The film centres around cyborg Alita, discovered as a discarded head & torso with amnesia, who starts having glimpses of her past life when her combat potential is awakened.

First appearing in the 1990 manga/comic, this version of the story more closely follows the 1993 anime (therefore is a new retelling of the old retelling of the original story) with elements from later comic story arcs added for spectacle.

Back then, Alita's genesis story and world were fresh and groundbreaking but, In the decades since, other writers and producers have used similar themes, concepts and imagery, a lot of which are now commonplace in sci-fi. Some have perhaps even been influenced by the original work (2013's 'Elysium' springs to mind). Thus, newcomers may not find too much here that separates this film from the dystopian sci-fi crowd.

Personally, having read the ongoing manga graphic novels since 1995, it is with this background I judge the 2019 film.

While I prefer the original manga story over the anime version this is based on, Alita:BA excels in expanding it into a modern cinematic blockbuster, handling most of the source material with respect. However, the film also brings with it some of the problematic pacing, narrative and character writing found in the anime, which are more obvious now that everything has been scaled up for this version (and adds some of it's own).

It succeeds in translating the world and action to the big screen even better than I had hoped (I watched it on a 3D IMAX screen and the film looked consistently spectacular). The central character is very well portrayed, acted and realised, and there is greater focus here than before on her growth and development from being child-like to more adult as she tries to discover her place in the universe.

There are plenty of nods and references to the graphic novels, some work well while others seem a bit forced or taken out of their original context. Fans of the manga would notice and really appreciate many of the inclusions and homages.

Taken in isolation, I believe the film is enjoyable and reasonably accessible to newcomers, but suffers from cramming too much into an origin story and treading familiar ground. From that viewpoint I would give it a 6/10.

However, as a fan familiar with the context of this movie and it's origin, it turned out far better than I expected it to. The love that the production team has for the project is there for all to see and I was engaged and entertained throughout. The production values were mesmerising; within 1 hour of the film ending I bought the "art/making of" book, I'm not usually that quick to do so! As such, I would give an 8.

Having been aware that this film had been in stuck in development for nearly 20 years, I am extremely pleased that it has finally been made. However, I fear that the timing of it's release is perhaps too late to truly capture the imagination of modern audiences or cement itself a unique place in sci-fi history, unlike it's 30 year old manga counterpart.

For these reasons, I'm settling on a 7.

Alita is very well done and very likeable. People can connect with her, despite the cliche use of amnesia. And while there are certainly changes from the original Manga, they do not hurt the film in any way. This movie can stand on its own merits and does so spectacularly.

While people may be a bit put off by Alita's large cartoonish eyes, they do not detract from the film nor are much of a distraction. It's simply another part of her being a cyborg. And there's plenty of crazy cyborgs running around. This is a must-see movie and I would absolutely love to see a sequel.

I have absolutely no idea why some critics are rating it badly. The story is wonderful, and alludes to a deeper mythology, Alita herself is wonderfully conceptualized, executed, and portrayed, and the fight scenes are absolutely gob-smacking delicious. The art direction is stupendous and the movie is both technologically impeccable and full of heart.

Apparently, some critics have an issue with the fact that the movie serves as an introduction to Alita and doesn't conclude the story but rather acts as a first chapter, but what the hell do they expect? The manga went on for a lot more than the first few issues that the movie covers, and if they wanted everything compressed into one movie, then they're impatient and unappreciative.

Watch the thing.

It's beautiful.

You'd be right to criticise it for only telling the one story that it does in this otherwise great opener of what could become an epic trilogy or series. But the visuals, the pacing, the design and the action are all on point and if you are coming to the theatre for some solid action entertainment with heart, Alita doesn't disappoint. If you're coming for the braininess of the Matrix or the grit of Sin City, look elsewhere - perhaps a sequel? Expand

One of the best movie I've ever seen, thanks to Rosa Salazar's performance, thanks to the story written by James Cameron adapting a very good manga, and thanks to the Iron City universe created by Robert Rodriguez.
Alita is not an industrial production, it's a craftman's work. The story has been meditated by Cameron during 20 years. It came through several filters : the manga, next the OVA, Cameron's script, Rodriguez's script, the novelisation and then the film itself. It results in a nectar.
Every single part, every single component of the movie is carfully carved, as is Alita's cyborg body.
The storyline is good, the characters are really good, the CGI is awesome, the love interest is relatable, the score is totally adapted, action secenes are tremendous.
If you take one of these elements separately, of course you can find better movies : I'm not saying it is the best everywhere. But it is very rare to get a movie which is really good on all these compoents at the same time. This is what makes it exceptionnal.
Quality is everywhere. This movie has been made out of passion, carefully, with talent.
Rosa Salazar's performance is amazing, even if her character is CGI.

While not as gripping as these others, it did have very interesting elements to it that I found intriguing.
This "live action" adaptation is not doing the anime (or manga for that matter) much justice. The film starts by trying to lure people into Alita's character by giving her a childlike demeanor and wonder. This all falls quite flat though when she starts showing off her latent abilities. Later they then try and lure you in a second time by making her character develop relationships and affections so you can be reminded she isn't just a robot, but a cyborg.
In the end the story has too much backstory to covey and hides most of it for the supposed Sequel (so help me god if they call it anything with "Tears" in it I will be very upset). So what happens is the entirety of the film is character development for Alita, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but they never really flesh out her character. Is she bent on revenge, does she want her memories back, is she looking for answers from her past, and so on and so on. The only real driving force seems to be a lust for battle, a very strong message delivered in the anime and manga.
The thing that rally got me was all the goofy cyborgs. This movie works better as a cartoon. Having real faces of real people basically CGI-ed onto robotic frames got very old. And di you know the people who brought you "Avatar" did this? I sure did when I saw Alita's comically large eyes. I was not sure if this was an Avatar get or a bad jab at anime/manga characters having large eyes (by the way they are drawn that way because Japanese people find beady eyes disturbing and/or shifty, they really think Mickey Mouse is some kind of villain, I swear). To put it bluntly the visual effects are good, but they are also overused. Everything looks fake and you know its fake and that's the crux of it. The nurse lady is the only cyborg who even remotely looks cool and she gets like 3 minutes of screen time the entire film.
So in the end, save yourself the trouble and just watch the OVA Anime. Its not great, but its better fair than this and since it is animated you won't have ghost faces pasted onto CGI robots.

There is a little of the 'uncanny valley' to the CGI but, anime eyes notwithstanding, that fits well with the subject matter. The cast are all very good, and there is some real emotion associated with the spectacle. It was disappointing that the movie ended without a clear resolution, but given the size of the manga, I was not surprised. The film's action sequences are very impressive (as you would expect given Rodriquez's back catalogue). They rely more on 'show' than 'tell', although there is some exposition it never really bogs down the story. Expand

Pro:
+ verdammt gute Effekte
+ einige epische Momente
+ gute Schauspieler-Wahl

Frankly I didn't have a very clear idea of what I would see with the exception of what the trailers showed but despite the lightness of its background story and the one that the film shows, it's also a very entertaining and action-packed film, with an impressive visual effects work. Alita is a monumental achievement for visual effects.

I honestly expected a more empty film and although the story didn't leave me satisfied, its main character has a huge appeal and charisma.
Rosa Salazar may have disappeared in her virtual persona but the Alita she plays has spirit and emotion. And although I hear complaints that she's too reckless and unconscious, I have rarely heard such complaints from male characters in the same situations.

What more can I say? Hardly resolutive, especially with that open ending but Alita: Battle Angel offers two entertaining hours of action and adventure and that was enough considering my initial expectations.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Little review, one week after seeing the movie. The movie was overall quite fun to watch and entertaining on the first view with beautiful CGI and really good visual effects of which I almost fell in love. The visual aspect of the movie is probably the element that I really enjoyed and I'm still impressed of the quality that they offered. The environment is also beautiful and gives a great spirit of the movie that seems to be able to capture the idea of the Japanese and Manga's culture. However, the visual effects helped for a good entertainment but I felt like if the movie was very empty in the meaning or the story itself with a huge part of the movie turned around the love story between the two characters and it took a place and is very unnecessary and slowing down the story with ridicule dialogues. The background of the story is given to you very quickly and is very blur for those who didn't knew Gunnm before and concentrate itself more on the basic visual spectacle than in telling a full story (I do understand that a movie telling a story would have not been very interesting but I think that they kinda throw out the background at beginning and isn't very relevant). Finally, the story is placing many secondary characters without really using them well (poor Ido's assistant, she looked so annoyed) and the characters didn't succeed in making me enter in a form of compassion. Finally, the end was very disappointing as I left the movie theatre with a huge form of bitterness even though the film was quite entertaining but the ending is very disappointing with a very cliché picture of Alita facing Nova (yes it is a way to hype the audience, but I don't know if I'm the only one like this but no it's very disappointing and not in the good sense) Expand

Starring Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.

When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past - she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she's grown to love.

I read some of Alita's books, and I really liked them.. so when they announced the movie, I was so bumped up, then I lost hope to see this amazing idea comes to the big screen, and now, they finally made it!!! And it's so very good!!! Enough with the introductions, let's get into it...

I really loved the movie, for the most part, it has lots of stuff to love actually, it's a sci-fi, action movie.. with some romance, it's so easy to love, especially with the fans, I think this movie gave every fan of the manga what they want! The CGI of this movie, for the entire runtime is just flawless, Alita's face is so close to the manga, it's the closest anime/manga character adaptation I ever seen! The action sequences made me on the edge of my chair, I mean it gave me all what I wanted. The performances are not that great though! Rosa Salazar as Alita is just perfect, I loved her, also Christoph Waltz as Ido, I love him as an actor and he did some great job as Ido. Jackie Earle Haley is also good as Grewishka. Jennifer Connelly on the other hand is not good, at all, I didn't enjoy her performances at all, Keean Johnson is also bad, as well as Jorge Lendeborg Jr. I'm not gonna talk about Mahershala Ali, because of I'm so conflicted about him.
The story of this movie is also great, I really liked it, it's surprisingly fun and adventurous!

The screenplay on the other hand is the most disappointing thing through the entire movie, James Cameron did some amazing movies like Avatar, Terminator and Aliens.. he did some amazing job with these movies, but with Alita: Battle Angel is not that amazing! There is a scene of Hugo and Alita while eating chocolate, suddenly Hugo explains Zapan to Alita for no reason. Also the romance between Hugo and Alita is rushed, and no so heart-warming. There are some other points, we'll get to that point in the spoiler-review, because I have lots of stuff to talk about, but I don't want to spoil anything to you, guys.. I just want you to watch it blindly.
The screenplay is my biggest flaws with this movie. The movie is still also suffering of some issues with the narrative, that we'll talk about them in the spoiler-review.

The OST is just.. EPIC! Junkie XL did amazing job again, as he did with Mad Max: Fury Road. Alita: Battle Angel is super-epic and.. great, still suffering of some issues, but still a really fun movie to watch, and satisfying. I'm gonna give Alita: Battle Angel a B+!

And as always, thank you, guys for reading and supporting my work, really appreciate it, and if you liked it you can click on my name up above and see all of my reviews.
