A great movie! Very beautiful! The design of the city and the interiors are magnificent. The action is fascinating. A bit weak dialogue. The main character is charming.

The movie is mostly true to the source material, Rosa Salazar lends the movie an emotive and entertaining performance, the action sequences are the best I've seen in a while, and the CGI is the best I've seen since Avatar released around a decade ago. The only downside to this movie is the romance feels somewhat rushed and the story pacing can feel slightly fragmented in parts; however, I believe that is one of the downfalls of adapting source material that contains multiple chapters into a movie that hopes for sequels instead of a series, so I won't really count that against them. Best of all, the movie shoots to entertain its audience among its various areas of competence as opposed to trying to push political rhetoric. I hope to see multiple sequels as a result of this film's success! Expand

This movie literally raised the bar for CGI by 1000%. Do not go into this movie expecting source material, this is purely a spectacle of unimaginable amount of hours of pure digital artistry. Alita is the strong female protagonist we've been craving in an action movie for a while now and this is a killer IP to work with. I have already purchased tickets for 2 more showings and plan to see this in IMAX as well. I simply don't understand how anyone didn't like this movie, you must be blind. Alita, you have won over a cult following and it would be mind blowing for investors not to instantly start throwing more money at this franchise. Movies like this are the reason I leave my house to watch one. I wish I could give this movie an 11 because it really was that damn good. Expand

I'm not an Anime fan, so I didn't expect to really like this movie, but I... really liked it. What impressed me the most was that they kept all the OTT Manga cartoon themes, but made them work in a more serious film so that they don't feel cartoonish. The critics who bashed this are narrow minded idiots. Watch it, if for no other reason than because it's one of those movies that is a milestone in the evolution of CGI. 100% will see the sequel. To summarize Alita: Battle Angel simply and succinctly: This movie is totally amazeballs!

This may be the best looking film of the decade. It is truly an impressive world. It manages to duplicate the distinct look of the manga. This movie takes place in a futuristic dystopia, but it is kind of a fun lawless Wild West-type instead of the many dystopias today that take themselves too seriously. There's sort of an 80's pop sci-fi aesthetic to the whole thing. There are a lot of cyborgs in this and they're all so unique-looking. Alita's engraved porcelain-ish body is a particularly nice touch.

But what about the story? It is really well-balanced in both action and drama and light and dark. There are moments of wonder and human kindness in this, but also moments of darkness in a dog-eat-dog world.

This is an R-rated manga that was transformed into a PG-13 film. But considering that a lot of violence is between cyborgs, director Robert Rodriguez does a surprising job of making this a violent affair.

Though you never see her real face, Rosa Salazar's wonderful mocap performance makes it through for the computer-animated cyborg Alita. She effortlessly has the character switch from childlike innocence to a determined warrior. The movie made a lot of furor over the internet in its decision to give Alita big ol' anime eyes. The backlash after the first trailer was enought that Rodriguez had them look smaller. (Fun fact: the eyes actually weren't shrunk. The pupils were widened.) To be honest, the eyes never really necessary and they didn't really need to make Alita CG. However, I got used to the look real quick. (The CG is so good that she really feels like a person.) Alita is supposed to be different from everyone else, even other cyborgs, so being the only one with big eyes kinda helps cement this.

Christoph Waltz does a great job in a tenderr but world-wise role as the cyber-doctor who finds Alita and takes her in. He's been typecast in villain roles for far too long. The father-daughter relationship between the two, albeit a bit rushed, is a core of the film.

Rodriguez and fellow screenwriters James Cameron, yes that James Cameron, and Laeta Kalogridis tackle a certain number of chapters from the manga and really try to squish in every bit of content than maybe they needed to. Admittedly, this works pretty well for most of the film. Exposition is surprisingly natural here. However, the ending is a smidge rushed. It is an emotional one, but it could have been stronger and the need to tease a sequel, while producing a striking final scene, doesn't help either. There are two main cyborg villains in this and as much as I liked both of them, this could've been a smoother product if one of them was cut.

Despite my criticisms, I really love this movie. Highly reccomended.

Co-writers James Cameron, Laeta Kalogridis, and Robert Rodriguez have interpreted an excellent manga into a live-action anime of the highest calibre. The SJW crowd seems to think that a "strong" female character has to be strong in the literal sense of the word. James Cameron has been writing strong female characters for 30 years now. They aren't strong because of their literal physical attributes or "powers" but in their ability to overcome adversity. Alita is yet another example of a character that is strong (of whatever gender) because she exhibits the true paradigm of a hero - the willingness to sacrifice her own life to protect the people she cares about and/or further the execution of a mission bigger than herself. Amazing sci-fi cyberpunk blockbuster with heart.

It's been a long time since I enjoyed a movie so much, A true strong female character that shows that you can be bad ass and feminine at the same time. It was exciting, and the movie really put a smile on my face. I watched it three times and will do again. Best CGI to date, great emotional story, amazing character development, a lot of fun and outstanding action.

Alita caught my heart the very first moment she opened her beautiful eyes. What a likeable person, discovering and enjoying the simple things at life like eating a orange or chocolate. The movie take you by the hand and directs you through a very emotionaly rollercoaster drive.

Alitas development from a innocent girl to a strong hero fighting against the evil is such an intense experience. This is my favorite movie for now. I also bought the manga to know more about this fantastic world. The blu-ray will be bought as soon as it hits the market. I really hope for a sequel, this movie is AMAZING!

Absolutely loved this file. Alita is the movie of the year for me. Rosa Salazar did a Oscar worthy performance bringing Alita to life, and there is no way you can't fall in love with her character. And no words can explain the action and special effects.

Beautiful and touching stories. Not to mention the amazing effects and fighting scenes. Great stories and when it's ended, you felt like, what!?? Haven't watched enough. I want to watch more!!!

James Cameron has been dreaming about making Alita: Battle Angel for decades. He bought the rights to the 90s manga and has been sitting on the property, having to continuously push it back because of technological demands and the demands for Avatar sequels. Cameron co-wrote the screenplay and handed the directorial duties over to Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), a talented visual stylist who has been struggling of late. The marriage looks good and the final 122-minute feature is the closest a live-action film has ever gotten into replicating the look and feel of an anime.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Could the acting have been better? Yes, absolutely. Definitely actually. In fact I'd say there were a few moments where I couldn't help but cringe a little on the inside from dialogue alone.

Is the spectacle enough to make up for it? Well yes. It's the nicest window dressing you can have in a film about violent cyborgs beating the cogs out of each other if not getting ripped apart.

Meanwhile though, there are a bunch of nitpicks those that have read the manga will or should moo about. The antagonist is one of them, the real antagonist, not the one(s) you see in the trailers. The sword you see in those trailers too will be something I'm surprised isn't being mooed about a lot more often then it should, long story short in the source material it was a sword made in the scrapyard and not the macguffin it becomes in the film. All told there's at least two more characters they make reference to in the film that have been changed or effectively demoted as characters, as people to help the titular Battle Angel grow, and there may be more nitpicks still that others have likely torn apart like so many angry chickens doing the samba in the snow no I don't know where this metaphor came from shush!

But the real question should always be, do they nail the title character's personality correctly? And to that I must grin slightly and nod. Yes, Salazar's portrayal of Alita could be better, even inevitably end up being saved by action set pieces, spectacular feats of mechanical martial arts, and very violent roller derby. But as a person, fans of the manga should ask; who was Alita? She was and is the Battle Angel, the one who stood above the filth in the scrap pile city, tried to preserve what little good remained in it. She was a young, innocent girl and an ancient warrior with combat knowledge that can make short work of nigh any mechanical thug she meets, that can still love, still feel so fragile despite having a body of hard steel.

That alone is why I didn't vote any lower. Cameron and Rodriguez had her story down to a T. And in the end that's the most important thing...er...to me at least.

...I still don't like what they did with Nova's character though. Seriously. From eccentric mad scientist who's villainy stems from enthusiastic research to pure distilled cold, maniacal villain in one fell swoop. And what was up with sidelining Jashugan to a side character that gets roughly one to two lines? The Motorball champion, the guiding light to Alita's growth in the third major arc of the manga is suddenly just wink wink nudge nudge reference material.

By and by, did any of you who watched the film take note of the eyes in Alita's flashbacks? Not just her's, wink wink nudge nudge

Seeing Alita: Battle Angel sparked an ecstatic sense of hope that finally, moviemaking have caught up, and have done justice to the untapped potential of the expansive and immersive universe which could only could have been experienced through manga and anime from 28 years ago. The core of being young, the simple emotions of unconditional love, innocence lost and idealism thrashed against an invredible contrast to violent and evil gore. You can see that Alita: Battle Angel was created with love, compressing a much longer source content in multiple tankoubons, while managing to retain the majority of visual, emotional and immersive elements of the original work. Even if compressing the movie sacrificed some plotline material, I think the resulting work overall still manages to retain and even improve the original canon, which I'm sure those who have read the original series will appreciate fully. I hope that this will actually even bring a lot of viewers to the original manga, which is not constricted by a pg13 rating. Overall, one of the best imax experience I've had in years, thanks to Cameron, Rodriguez, Kishiro and all of the team that created the movie, congrats on creating a stellar example of how a movie should be made. I predicted good effects, this is James Cameron after all, but what I didn't expect were a good story and powerful acting. In the Manga-born world Salem, which is the sky city that everyone aspires to get to after the Fall, pulls you in in a way reminiscent of Star Wars. The casting is perfect and the tech has improved so much that they've avoided the creepy effect entirely, sometimes called the uncanny valley. The CGI tech is both amazing and transparent - you forget that you're watching a processed human within the first few minutes upon her introduction. This is an origin story so has a lot of ground to cover, but does a great job of building what I hope is the first installment of a fresh, original franchise on the big screen. See it today on the biggest screen in your town! Expand

However, this movie is not a 40-50 either, so I'm giving it a 10 to even the score. This movie it's a solid 7-8. Why? It's a blockbuster with soul, with a strong female protagonist you can actually empathize with, it's human, it's weak, it's young, and it's also badass. It's also a movie that tries, it doesn't follow the Marvel formula, it doesn't go the easy way, it tries something different. It's PG-13 but it's violent, it's a popcorn film but it has deep themes behind it (I'd go as far as saying Alita it's the only blockbuster movie that transgender people may feel identified with). It's a pretty great manga adaptation, capturing the essence of the manga, and giving plenty of details and reference for the true fans. The worldbuilding in this is fantastic, the action is visceral. Just like Alita, the film offers you its heart, it's all or nothing with it, but unfortunately, people seem to stomp on it, probably by the same people than then write complains about how Hollywood only makes Remakes, Reboots and Live actions of old animated films. Well, may be that's because each time someone tries something different instead of embracing it and giving it a chance, you discard it and you make fun of it. This movie was terribly judged with double standards. Watch it, it's a fun ride. Expand

Rosa Salazar shines as the hero Alita, and she is the stand out star of this movie. I have not seen the anime or have read the manga so all of my thoughts about this are strictly about the movie as I have no real knowledge about this property.
The things I liked about are the performances all around. It stars Rosa Salazar as the main protagonist Alita, and she does a great job in this "fish out of water" kind of scenario where she can't remember who she is. It is fun seeing her go through this journey to remember who she is. It doesn't just feed all of the flashbacks to the audience which was well done. She receives some memories during important moments. One example of this is the first time she gets into a fight and she remembers a battle she fought in hundreds of years prior. The way the flashbacks for the most part were executed well except for one of them. Another positive was the world they set up. This is a world I would like to see developed a little more, including the history of this Great War between the United Republic of Mars and Earth, (At least I believe they were fighting Earth). Some negatives are that the story doesn't reach a satisfying conclusion. It ends in a cliffhanger, which I hope they will continue in a sequel because this character deserves more. But I don't usually like when movies end in huge cliffhangers, especially if it seems like that movie won't be getting a sequel. Another negative was the way one of the flashbacks was handled. In total they show the audience 3 flashbacks of Alita and the first 2 make sense as to why she's remembering them at that moment in time. The last one seems to be just a random moment during the war. Looking back it might have been about the mission to destroy the flying city of Zalem, but it seems like a random flashback as we already know that is what her mission is.
Overall I think Alita: Battle Angel does enough on the surface to be a solid standalone film, but it does leave a lot to be desired and I really hope they make a sequel to this.

It stems from the fact that it was made by a director and a team of creative minds who wanted to make this movie and had fun in doing so; resulting in one of the most entertaining blockbusters in recent years.

The craftsmanship and care this film was made with are fully realized in its attention to detail and the CGI is without a doubt some of the best that the industry has ever produced to this day. It is seamless and might be considered amongst some as flawless and the most quintessential use of CGI ever. While other films in the past have failed to encapsulate photorealistic facial expressions with their use of motion capture Alita: Battle Angel excels in this area. To truly sell a motion-captured performance to the audience they must believe that a non-performance captured character and a performance captured character are sharing the screen. In doing this it allows both actors to act off of each other's performances and create meaningful interactions. It is not enough to say that the believability and craft put into Alita’s design is beyond stunning.

Alita is played by Rose Salazar and she delivers such a memorable and wonderful performance. The audience is immediately introduced to Alita and are captivated by her magnificent presence on screen; start to finish. Rose does something remarkable throughout the entirety of this film—she manages to maintain a sense of innocence and naivety while also illustrating what a total badass Alita is. In many films characters are often forced on the viewers and are told to like them through eye-rolling attempts of being cool, tough, or attractive in rather mediocre scenes or moments of supposed character development rather than being shown why a character should be liked and cared for through well-constructed interactions between the characters and their dialogue. Rose’s performance is genuine and adorable. When Alita smiles and laughs the audience smiles and laughs. When Alita stands her ground and takes **** from no one the audience responds with “that’s right!”. This is an iconic female heroine in the making.

One thing that is important to note is the exclusion of forced themes. One of the strengths of Alita as a character is her ability to be a badass female without the need of subjugating the viewer to unnecessary dialog pertaining to female power or feminism; something that has grown tiresome to view as many films released in recent years have tried to develop authentic female characters but fail.

Recently in cinema, there has been a push for a greater presence of women (and greater diversity in general) in film; rightfully so and long overdue. However, in doing so the narrative regarding equality and feminism has been dismantled and restructured into something less than what women truly deserve on the big screen.

The strongest and most effective form of feminism that you can present to the viewer is visually capturing her strength, virtue, charisma, and flaws through her actions. Lines like, “You’re pretty good for a girl.” or “Not too bad for a girl.” are absent from this film and it is all apparent in the supporting characters care and respect for Alita as an individual and as one of their own. Show don’t tell.

Alita doesn’t bash or make quips about how better she is than everyone else to justify her actions as a “strong woman”. Gender politics, identity politics, and hidden SJW agendas are non-existent in this film. This strengthens Alita as a role model for young girls and women all around the world; it is the core foundation of what makes her so appealing to everyone—her heart, her innocence, and her level of badassery.

The character development of Alita is so impressing and fun to experience. Every time she is onscreen the viewer can’t help but smile and anticipate what’s to come next. Alita is introduced as a fragment of the past that has no recollection of her role in the world she awakes in. As the story progresses, Alita, as well as the viewer, happen upon the idea of a greater and grander universe to explore as well as further character development. She remembers who she is and knows now what she stands for. “I will not stand by in the presence of evil.” - Alita

There are many moments that are handled with such delicate attention to detail in Alita’s body language that is absent from a majority of characters in cinema, today. From her hand movements to her facial expressions, and in how she fights. She moves with fluidity; in the way she presents herself and in how she speaks.

The story of Alita: Battle Angel is not perfect. It has room for growth and improvement in its potential sequels. It teases big ideas and a universe worth exploring. It drops bits of lore worth expanding upon. The world Alita takes place in is one worth revisiting.

---ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL---
        Movie review

I tried to post this on Rotten Tomatoes, but it doesn't allow reviews/ratings for this movie. (Like all controversial movies)

I kept hearing conflicting information about this movie, and originally had no interest in seeing it.

The movie is very entertaining through the whole thing. But at the same time, not a single moment is really noteworthy.
If it had one noteworthy scene, I could easily rate this a 90%
Another major problem is that the movie leaves off "To be continued" which means we'll never see the next film, due to press/advertisers trying to keep it from competing with Captain Marvel.

One thing that stands out in this movie (not as a plot point) is how well the action sequences are handled through 90% of it.
I personally hate action sequences, and tend to turn my brain off during them, and day dream.
I found myself only doing that once, when the action scene dragged on longer than any of the other action sequences.
The rest were VERY impressive to watch. Even without plot context, or dialogue to break up the monotonous nature of action sequences, something was still always mesmerizing, unique, or just well thought out. (The bad action sequence was a chase sequence that dragged on too long, and stopped doing anything unique or interesting after a few minutes)

A random "emotional moment" happens near the end, that loses it's potency, since it's a TV series condensed into a movie. There was no way to improve it, w/o putting a larger focus on the characters involved, instead of the movies plot.

All of the characters are super entertaining to watch, or hear talk.

But before I finish, the press and much of the media pushed a narrative the movie was sexist. I thought it would be true, since a lot of complaints mentioned sound like something you'd find in anime.
There was ZERO sexualized content in this movie. Not even a hint of it.
She didnt have wide hips, big boobs, or any other sexualized features.
Her body was completely metal, with only the brain being the only human flesh part.
Non of her outfits were provocative or anything.
Even though she has nothing to show, due to being made of metal, she even wore shorts when getting out of bed in the morning. So obviously it was just to try and lower competition for Captain Marvel, which was trying to score brownie points as a "Strong female lead" movie, and came out too close to eachother.

----------------------------
Movie's final rating
75%

Great 1st watch, but has almost no rewatch value unfortunately.

It's not a well known Manga, even in Japan, and it's Original Video Adaptation did not take off well either. I think that's why when it was announced, the first time I saw the trailer, I was like "who or what is this?". To top it off, it sounded a bit too cheesy for me at the time... "Battle Angel". The obvious contrast of the two words was just a bit cringey. But I saw it was produced by Jim Cameron, directed by Rob Rodriguez and co-produced by John Landau from Avatar. So yeah, this might be OK. So saw it in the cinema, expecting around a solid 7 of 10, or at least a 6, given the heavy hitters that were at the helm of this movie. But boy was I wrong, and I never could have been happier I was wrong. This movie just blew me away. Everything about it was immersive, the world, the graphics, the characters, the acting, the music and the heart that went into this movie is just contagious. You can tell this was done with a lot of love and care, and passion shines through in the movie.

The world, and the small hints of the back-story is compelling, they told enough to give proper context for the current events in the movie, but also just enough that it makes the viewer ask more, be curious and formulate their own 'possibilities' of the past events which led to the present world they live in. The visuals, graphics and CGI is top notch. This movie in my opinion is the new gold standard in terms of computer generated imagery. They pushed the technology with the art and it shows. It's not perfect, but it is far beyond the current competition in terms of quality and most importantly believeability. The main character in the movie is 100% CGI, which is surprising since about 80-90% of the time, you forget that she's CGI, even with the BIG eyes, small mouth and pointy chin. That's how photo-real the images are. The characters are well developed and well played by all of the cast, especially the lead role Rosa Salazar, whose performance and voice gives life and soul to the character. Christoph Waltz as Ido made it seem so easy and natural and Ed Skrein as Zapan makes for a compelling jerk in the story. The passion, the love and care put into this movie is seen by how engrossed the actors are in their characters, as it shows in the screen the genuine emotions that were put forth, as well as the writing and direction that was taken to tell the story. The music ADDS to the emotion of the current events unfolding, as they should, and add it does! There's nothing less to be expected after all from the same guy who did the score for Mad Max: Fury Road. As you may have noticed, I did not mention yet the dialogue and the story. The story sets itself up for a sequel, which plays into my bias of generally disliking that style of storytelling. Though it has a beginning and an end of its own, it leaves one feeling a bit hanging still. The dialogue at some parts also felt a bit disjointed, as was the progression of the story. Acceptable if one takes into the context that this is but a small part of a larger multi-volume story in Japanese, not so much if it is to be taken as it is, without that context. They could have edited these aspects heavily, but doing so would be a move that is quite unfaithful and could be taken as disrespectful of the source material, which James Cameron was careful to maintain its integrity. It doesn't lend itself that well to the movie in my opinion, but a commendable move overall. To wrap it up, the movie isn't perfect, it has its flaws, but overall, it's a movie that draws you in, and sticks with you with all the heart it brings, the richness of the world and characters, the intensity of action, and of course, the humanity and relateability of the central character Alita, that makes one genuinely care for the character from the moment she is introduced on-screen. It's one of those movies that not only entertains, but inspires. It managed to do that to me, and I imagine it will do so to many more. This movie is a solid 9/10, and would recommend it highly for everyone who wants to watch more than just a firework spectacle, but a deep and universally appealing movie with a message and a heart at its core.

I really hope they make more films in this universe! It's also one of the few films that ends in such a way I'm amped up and can't wait to see what happens next. Those involved did a fantastic job making this film a reality. And the special effects... WOW! The only real con I can see with this film is that the story has some cheese to it since it appears to have elements of young adult focus to it. It's easily forgiven since it's so minor and the one big moment this happens in the film is quickly doused with some harsh reality the character has to deal with. Overall I give it a 9/10. Expand

This depiction on a (female) character is not only kind of "fresh" (although it is not new in concept) but also perfectly wrapped in other emotional scarves which you need to strip down after the movie is ongoing: The development of the character(s) and world building are going hand in hand. And as you follow Alita on her journey you are not reminded, it is A GIRL who is fighting for her "humanity" and place in that world. This is a showcase of beeing somebody who is different. Not (reduced) by gender. But by construct of the society. After Wonderwoman and Alita we have two great examples in last two years HOW IT IS DONE. If Capt Marvel would have gone that road … One more thing: it is so refreshing to watch Rosa Salazar (and two years ago Gal Gadot) explain her character and giving us inclusive interviews without any fake agendas – something Brie Larson is obviously not able or willing to do. A shame. And a sad thing.

People, GO WATCH ALITA.

Absolutely beautiful visuals, amazing camera work, and a fun movie to see in theaters. Personally I really enjoyed it and loved how the choreography was done. CGI looked great, and the story was great at building a completely new world.

Only points I felt were iffy were the later portions of the movie, where Hugo gets a bit of a transformation and he doesn't really get any time to use it before the movie ends. It could have been great to see how him and Alita act in between those points. The romance between them was cute, but felt a bit rushed in areas.

4/5 Great movie, definitely worth seeing in theaters. A few parts which I felt bogged down the pacing and felt rushed, but it's still solid. Help support this movie as it definitely deserves a sequel! There is great setup and I'm left wanting more after the movie ends. It leaves off on such an "Ooo" moment that it makes me excited for what comes next.

Its a pity the movie wasn't marketed so well. I had the impression that it was some usual anime action film and I went to watch it because I thought "Well, it James Cameron so it can't be that bad" but I was blown away. The storylines, the action, the scenes were so engaging and yet balanced that 2 hours felt like just one. The actors nailed the scenes and action so well and so seamlessly that I am sure there was a tremendous amount of work put in to make it that way. I have watched both the IMAX and digital formats and definitely you need to go for the IMAX version. James has a way of bringing the viewer into the scene rather than the usual movie coming out at you effect. 1st time in my 50 years that I have watched a movie in theaters more than 10 times. Expand

By the 2nd act I am reminded of the Spy Kids movies with George Lopez’s face slapped on a giant robot. Alita herself is beautifully realistic as a full CGI character, but sometimes the cyborg characters look a little “off” with their real faces pasted onto their CGI bodies. If you can get past this visual weirdness, the film is really entertaining.

The story is pretty straight forward but has a few major turns that surprise. The first act is really excellent as you learn, along with Alita, what she is and where she comes from. By the second act the movie goes full on action and is great fun. The third act is hit and miss... lets just say if a sequel never gets made, this movie doesn’t really have a good ending.

All in all, I’d sit through this 3 more times rather than sit through Aquaman. I’m just dumbfounded how many of these same critics loved that trash heap and give this movie 3 out of 10.

I realize film is a different medium and the story has to change some. So often I've been disappointed by remakes losing the essence of characters and the story. Not so with Alita: Battle Angel. The duality of Alitas charm and ferocity is transmitted off the screen and into our hearts. The action sequences are not only entertaining but quick and brutal as one expects from machines. The city feels alive and massive. A masterpiece of a remake and true to the spirit of the original, like no other big budget live action adaptation has been. I hope this is a sign of things to come! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For the GUNNM fans: trailer nitpicking solved; everything's there, faithful adaptation. OVA Chiren gets a better backstory!
For the Hollywoods: This is an adaptation in its truest sense, since books were first adapted to film; Alita is an abbreviation of only a portion of GUNNM, timeline elements from the source material have been stretched in order for the first movie to introduce the viewers to Motorball, for example- something that is going to be important in the Second chapter of what is an already existing epic, almost three decades old.
I thought this film was excellent. The directorial choice to portray Iron City as colorful, multicultural and bustling during the day is intentional; it expresses Alita's new and exciting world view.. before it's taken down that dark back alley.
Can't wait to see Alita vs. Jashugan.

Unlike some CGI heavy films, Alita knows when to end a scene and move on. The romance is cringe worthy and the weakest link in the film but, in the end, worked as a display of Alita's character. Lead actress is fantastically expressive - tons of nuance - and perfectly rendered - no hint of uncanny valley despite the large cyborg eyes.

It's a low bar but probably the second best live action adaption of an anime that I've seen, after the Initial D movie.

It is AMAZING and the best ANIME LIVE ACTION movie by far. This movie is full of heart, care and love by their creators and once again James Cameron shows that to make good and strong female characters you don't need SJW and FEMINIST politics. The story is really well done and feels exactly like a old school steam punk anime should. It build this amazing world slowly and with confidence to capture your curiosity. And my curiosity was grabbed in a way i can barely hold on to see a sequel. The movie sets up a sequel well but the ending can work even if a sequel does not get green light, but lets fight to get that sequel as amazing movies like this deserve it. The CGI is probably the best i have seen in a long time, maybe even better than Avatar. The trailers put me in a worried places because of does eyes, but it works, strangely it works and makes it feel more like the anime it is trying to portray. Action is top notch, well choreographed and intense. The soundtrack complements really well the vibe. Actores we brilliant, all of them even if some i would like to have seen more of like 1 of the vilains that i will not spoil. Now for what people criticize more, the love story. Some people like AngryJoe said it ruins the movie, all i can say is they are trying to sound smarter then they are. The love story works for this girl that is innocent with no memory and is learning all this feelings she knows nothing about, it brings a slow character development where she evolves by learning with the hits. Is not perfect but it is well executed enough to feel believable. This movie is far better than the movies this Critics love, Better than the Last Jedi, Better than Black Panther, and i am sure it will be far better than the upcoming Captain Marvel. Don't miss out on this masterpiece, because if it is successful i see a new dawn for anime live action adaptations and i hope James Cameron can take this type of work to other amazing anime like Trigun, Baccano, Evangelion, and so many others. We can dream. Expand

I liked this movie as much as I liked Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, if not more. So I wondered about how certain critics could like one very much but dislike the other.

Firstly, I think Alita just didn't do enough to become more westernized and critics expected that to negatively affect the overall reception. They forget that audiences that watch movies for entertainment can still enjoy a movie despite some pacing issues and cheesy dialogues here and there. Its kinda like that feeling when you introduce someone to your favorite show, and when you are re-watching with them you think "oh this part is kinda slow/cheesy maybe they won't like it and they probably will question my taste etc etc" I'm almost certain that's how some of the critics felt, which led them to giving it a harsh overall review/score despite the fact that they sound like they themselves actually enjoyed it.
Sometimes it is better to be more honest with yourself than trying to be objective with something that is better reviewed subjectively. Let statistics offset your inner "fanboy-ism", because there are guys that genuinely did not enjoy the movie. Secondly, it just takes more effort to get into a new thing compared to indulging in familiarity/nostalgia. "What the hell is Scrapyard, what is Zalem" vs "Okay this is modern New York and this is Spiderman" is just 2 completely different starting points. Personally I embraced the world and character-building, and I did not think there was a significant lull anywhere. It's nice to get into a new world sometimes instead of revisiting the same universe (MCU, Star Wars).

Lastly, I guess it really rubbed some people the wrong way when a movie raises more questions than answers and then finish with "to be continued". Personally I rather have as many movies as possible versus jamming a long story into a 2 hr movie because that's how adaptations often fail.
Think there's also a bit of double standard going on, especially with how Infinity War ended...

So please disregard critics score (and mine too) and give this movie a shot just as a thought exercise on the disconnect between movie critics and actual audience.

I really commend director James Cameron and producer Robert Rodriguez for creating a world so futuristic, so colorful, so dangerous and so tech-based that even our era of human species still has yet to create that world. Rosa Salazar does an excellent job giving Alita a story of sadness, naïveté, and understanding who she was meant to be. Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly and Mahershala Ali also do good jobs with their performances as well. Jackie Earle Haley and Ed Skrein make the best they can as the cliched henchman and pirates, but, there are worse things than that may have made me roll my eyes so I don’t mind. The Visual Effects and set design are also cool and detailed as only James Cameron and WETA could make it. My only nitpick is that it left me wanting more, which is good and bad at the same time. I really hope China and Japan help save this movie and make it the success it should be so Disney can have two new franchises from James Cameron with Avatar and Alita. So, yes, I say go see it, the film is worth your time, especially in a big loud IMAX 3D or Dolby format, and I really mean that.

My final rating for Alita: Battle Angel is a 9/10. Or 4.5 stars out of 5. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2.
