At points the dialogue was somewhat strange, but considering that it's a manga adaptation I ignored it. Would watch again. Waiting for a sequel.
P. S. Fun Fact: the chocolate in that scene was made by Rodriguez himself.

Yet, many times it is indeed the case, especially with ALITA, which they slammed. What the critics did not get was the fact that Rodriguez and Cameron are making a 'live action ANIME'. The so called disjointed plot? If you read the manga, then it is a distillation of the so called episodic nature of the original work. Critics slammed something that they don't understand. They refer to Marvel flicks as accurate yet when Alita stays true to its original manga, they said differently. Suffice to say, Alita is spell bounding, with breathtaking effects that made you believe that an anime style character is alive and breathing. Kudos for Rosa Salazar for bring her A game here as the main character. This is also Rodriguez's best work in his career. Working with the great James Cameron does great wonders to his usual 'style'. Again, see this on the biggest screen possible. It is worth that extra ticket price. Expand

I was mildly disappointed in all of them for similar reasons, and so I went to watch Alita: Battle Angel, hoping for something more out of recent movie releases. I wasn't counting on it to be honest, so I started with a negative attitude.

I got everything I wanted and more.

Alita does what Captain Marvel wanted to do. It gave us a strong female heroine who kicks ass. It gave us a person confused about their identity, but wanting to do good. However, where Captain Marvel got bogged down in the scope of itself - trying to do too much in too little time - Alita doesn't. It does more, actually, and fits it in nicely with the time it has. I don't even think Captain Marvel is a bad film either, Alita just does it better.

It asks questions like what it means to be human or female to begin with. Could humanity ever war between planets in our solar system? Can you love just the brain of a person? Then, after all that? It practically kicks those questions out of the way in epic battles and a whirl of a romance. Alita doesn't bother itself too much with the MANY philosophical conundrums of the movie, it sweeps through these problems, and moves along as much as it can. Its characters don't question these things too much, but rather accept them as part of their world and continue on with their lives. For some this may make it seem cheap. For myself however this made the world feel real, engaging, vast, and fresh. You'll feel like Alita has only scratched the surface of exploring an incredible new world of science fiction when you leave the theater. That is world building done right.

Furthermore, from its first scenes onward, Alita builds its characters properly, starting with the basics and moving from there. It doesn't try to be too extravagant, but it also doesn't give us bland and boring one dimensional people of cardboard. Almost every one of them has multiple motivations, faults, and desires which are demonstrated, giving us excellent characters to follow through the film.

And follow them you do, through awesome and beautiful sets and through incredible actions sequences. The CGI does its job of making the cyborgs never look completely human, while also making them look believable real, and this comes together for some jaw dropping action sequences that you half to see on the big screen.

So go and watch it, you'll have a world to explore, a heroine to cheer, and a spectacle to watch. Alita : Battle Angel delivers it all, and it is worth every penny and more.

TheSpeaking as a person that is not a fan of either manga or anime, I have to say I LOVED this movie I went to see it just because my friend wanted me to go with him and that James Cameron worked on it, I was very impressed with the movie. The CGI was masterful and the fight scenes were some of the best I've seen in any movie out the past few years. The pacing is one of the major complaints I have of the movie a lot is thrown at you very quickly you need to piece together. The relationships were very quick to develop and were quite cheesy, Other than Alita I never really cared for the other character's because they were thrown in so fast and quickly moved away from them. I really recommend people go see the movie overall it has been one of the most enjoyable movies I have seen the last number of years, I really hope a second movie comes quickly from it and maybe a prequel to explain Alita's origin as that seemed very interesting. I confess i had no intention of wachting this movie because of the trailers, but i do not regret it! I read the manga and i can say that this movie is very faithful and does not disappoint. It has hearth, breathtaking action, good romance and stunning visual effects.

Alita is so sweet, brave and inspiring, and i'm in love with her. Her big eyes are not a problem - the manga itself says she has special eyes. And despite being a cyborg, Alita proves to be more human than many of us.

I'm definitely looking forward to the next movie to explore this world. In the meantime, i'll watch it again in 3D!

I saw this movie with a friend in 3D, and I was absolutely impressed. The characters, aside from Hugo, were great and the story progressed well. The CGI was fantastic and Alita was or is a lovable character. I'm extremely excited and hope they make another film, a 2nd part. Absolutely one of the best films this year so far and if it had been in 2018, I'd say it was the best film of 2018 riding along with Spider-man Into the Spider verse and Marvel's Infinity War. The critic reviews whom left negative reviews lead me to believe they are all a bunch of paid liars promoting or demoting something as their job rather than how they truly felt. It is rather obvious with the user score being what it is. Expand

I have no familiarity with the work on which it is based, but I found the storyline and the characters compelling, with really a fabulous acting job by the actress playing the lead, but also, all of the secondary characters were nuanced and had arcs of their own and felt like real people. The villains were more one dimensional and the weakest part of the film for me. The battle scenes also were a little bit too fast to follow -- but the way the lead character rides the uncanny valley and yet the acting job makes you forget that she is anything but human at times -- quite impressive. If youFirst off, I really do think the eyes make this movie. They added a certain fantastical element that allows the film to pull off certain dramatic flair (cheese), and being able to do so is pretty dang important to the film overall. If you have/had a normal young girl doing all this cool stuff, your disbelief might naturally kick in. In my opinion. (As a matter of fact, one of the cheesier scenes shown in the trailer was probably a favorite non-action scene, for me)

On that subject, it's action scenes were really cool and had pleasantly over the top showmanship to them. I saw this movie in 3D, which normally isn't my thing, but if you're going to watch a movie in 3D, a James Cameron movie's usually a pretty safe bet.

I thought it's scenario/screenplay was really good. It had lots of things faithful to the manga, and LOTS of changes, but I thought it's screenplay (and everything it changed) worked well as a movie. Yeah, a decent bit of stuff was missing from film that was in the manga, but I'm totally okay with getting a new experience, as well as knowing the differences for myself. I saw a few critics say that it was toned down for ratings purposes, and while that's true, it still had plenty of gore, IMO. It didn't seem to be lowered via gore, but instead by the removal of other "mature themes" that apply to both characters like Ido himself, but also interactions between other characters, like between Alita and Makaku (Grewishka in the film).

Kinda wish they'd thrown in the Farm and Deckman hiring propaganda as an easter egg somehow. And also the physical registration bit at the Farm that made Alita say "but I can't afford to get any dumber" (in the Manga).

There were a few plot points that didn't make sense to me. Seemed that they were just tossed in out of the blue to create some tension. Although some people complain about tonal inconsistency and cgi face of protagonist mapped over the face of actual actress(a necessity given Alita's original wide eyed innocent face look from manga), the visuals are still one of the best among commercially made movies. Story is neither too sophisticated nor a heap of garbage, as far as cyberpunk stories go, i'll give it a 6.5 and request viewers to give the makers a chance to provide depth and cover related lores in subsequent parts. I haven't read the manga by Yukito Kishiro but to those who have and given extremely low ratings(like 0, 2), it seems unfair to judge a movie solely by comparing its story with a manga series on which it's based because a manga has a lot more time to explore various facets and establish a universe. Alita battle angel is not only extremely enjoyable but a new milestone in visual spectacle and it's sad to see critics and some users rating it so low and crushing it's chances of getting a movie series, which can provide them with the depth and complexity they yearn for. Personally this movie for me is a masterpiece visually outstanding they really created a vast imaginative world for this movie. In addition it is a faithful recreation not only of the comics but the manga as well for the most part, for some reason they thought they needed a romantic relationship. I have a sense of relief after years of failed live action manga movies they have finally produced something on par with the cartoon. just a tip watch in 3d it is worth the extra money to see it in this format. Robert Rodriguez who already knows how to bring to life a comic like we saw with Sin City brings a lesson to the Hollywood industry and gives hope that this is the path to go. By the way, James Cameron who respect the original work did a perfect screenplay. The outstanding cast includes big stars Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connely, Mahershala Ali, and the hipnotic Rosa Salazar. Special mention that the CGI effects are so well done that you would not realize what is real or not, especially the big eyes of the protagonist. I get out of the IMAX cinema hyper excited waiting for a continuation, so I create an account to help make justice for the bad critics it didn“t deserve. Battle Angel is the best movie in a long time and a fresh air in the genre. Welcome Alita! Expand

This movie was great, everything you see on screen is just like the source material, it is very respectful of the Gunnm franchise and make it very realistic.

I saw lot of people complain about the eyes but in my point of view, the eyes of Alita aren't big cause it make them more manga-like. They're big cause in the manga Alita is said to be different from everyone, her physical appareance is unusual and it is retranscribed by the eyes in the movie.

As for the story, I think it's good. It follows the manga and ends where the first part of the manga ends. And for those who says "The movie has sequel confirm end to please the fan, blablabla" well the manga is cut into three parts: Gunnm (the movie is based on this part, and it has 9 volumes), Gunnm Last Order (which has 19 volumes) and Gunnm Mars Chronicles (which has 6 volumes). So yes, the end looks like a sequel bait but it's just follow the first part and ends like it does in the manga so just stop talking nonsense.

For me, it is the first faithful adaptation of a manga into a movie and when I look behind and see crap like Dragon Ball Evolution or Death Note well I'm glad this movie exist.

The action scenes are well done, and there are some impressive visuals, there are nuances to the story which are executed well overall even with some of the early stumbling blocks and the underdeveloped relationship between Alita and Hugo. I get the sense that initial drafts had more time spent on developing the characters and their relationships, but much of it ended up cut to make time for the extended action and flashback scenes because things coalesce rather well by the end. I saw this with three friends who had no experience with anime, much less the original Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita material and they all enjoyed it very much. It's not as deep or philosophical as the source material allows for, but it redirects that energy elsewhere to the benefit of the movie as a whole.

Just as an aside, I was curious what the critics who were unimpressed with Alita's acting and narrative thought of other movies, and as I found more and more 90+'s and a couple 100's given to The Last Jedi, I started to feel a little better.
