If you want my fair unbiased opinion, “Alita: Battle Angel” would have to be the profound definition of what style over substance is but at least the style is actually worth looking at because again it looks freakin’ gorgeous. How real someIf you want my fair unbiased opinion, “Alita: Battle Angel” would have to be the profound definition of what style over substance is but at least the style is actually worth looking at because again it looks freakin’ gorgeous. How real some of these characters look, the way the fight scenes play out as well as how the world building progresses with each passing scene shows off James Cameron’s expertise and how and where Robert Rodriguez plans to take this series if it gets the chance to do so. So from a distance viewpoint, it’s close to reaching Avatar spectacle levels but unfortunately beneath the surface, that means the storyline, the tone and the screenplay initially have to suffer as a result. Storyline is nothing special but it feels cluttered just because of how much they crammed under two hours, tones switch from time to time and if you ask me, this film is unapologetic about the fact that it’s an anime and that its style over substance because it is in your face. The only saving grace there is around that substance revolves around the characters, specially Alita, because they are fun to see.

I will give credit where credit is due cause both Rodriguez and Cameron worked their asses off to make this as real, as believable, as enjoyable as possible and if you’re down for a sci-fi slugfest, then you got where your money’s worth. Otherwise, lower your expectations to get a more subtle experience in the theater.

First of all, the set design and cinematography in this film is stunning and reminds me of Blade Runner. The sets look like actually things from a dystopian future. The sets look like actually things from a dystopian future. The lighting in each scene, especially the night time shots is beautiful to look at. Now the story felt like three completely different films that was mixed into one two hour and two-minute film. From the first scene to the last it never felt like the same film and this at sometimes caused the film to halt a stop. Sometimes the story would magically connect to the main story but most of the time it was three different stories that didn’t connect at all. You can easily tell that all the actors and actresses were giving it their all but some of them just ended up not working for me. This could be because of poor casting or they just didn’t try as hard in some scenes. One person who didn’t work for me was Keean Johnson, who plays Hugo. I just didn’t really care for him but I will give him a break seeing how he has only been in two other things. This film is obviously heavily relied on special effects so they need to look good and they did in certain scenes and moments but in others, I cringed obvious it was. Also, this is just me being me but Alita’s eyes scared me in a majority of the film. The pacing in this film felt really slow but I’m just going to blame it on the film that doesn’t know what it wants to be. The music in this, which is composed by Junkie XL, is great and I can easily see myself listening to it while I’m doing homework. This film is classified as a romance on IMDB and really I think if they cut the main relationship it wouldn’t harm the film in any way. There are plot twists in this film and you can easily see them coming from a mile away and I only say that because the characters drop so many hints about it that once it’s revealed your like yeah I know. The writing in this film is dull and really there is nothing to it. A lot of it is just cliched writing at it’s finest. The movie ends really abruptly and with a hint to a possible sequel idea. Finally, the action in this film has been done so many times that you can watch any action film and see some similar things in it. There was probably only one fight scene that stuck out to me as being really well done and original. But other than that all of them are just copycat scenes at best. In the end, Hollywood should learn to stop making movies off of mangas and anime, in general, you are curious or want to see a beautiful looking film this is for you. If not then just skip this.… Expand

Alita: Battle Angel is a fun time at the theater. The story is entertaining and the action scenes are fantastic. The only pitfall is that much of the dialogue is horribly written. Ok so Alita was directed by Robert Rodríguez who basically directed all the spy kids movies the movie was written by James Cameron who made titanic, avatar and so on. The acting sucked ass... Just to put it simply it sucked... The story was a loooot of setup for 2 maybe 3 other movies they ghost in the Shell this by cramming 4 book elements into one movie and letting the hamster run on it's wheel. Now the action was **** amazing can't deny that but that's it... The cgi well cgi will always be a 50/50 for everyone it is absolutely everywhere... The movie itself in my raw opinion was ok it is a watch that is it don't expect something out of this world at all because it was not... The manga's dialogue was almost the same I swear xD there is some cringe but the movie was not terrible just digestible I suppose. The manga's aiight...… Expand

As someone who has read the original manga, this is an excellent adaptation but there are too many stumbling blocks to make it a really good film. Rodriguez and Cameron have done the actual world of Gunnm (battle angel) some serious credit,As someone who has read the original manga, this is an excellent adaptation but there are too many stumbling blocks to make it a really good film. Rodriguez and Cameron have done the actual world of Gunnm (battle angel) some serious credit, giving Yukito Kishiro's 1990s vision of a post-apocalyptic shanty-city a much needed facelift. However, this is where the film begins to lose its way; some scenes are almost carbon copies from the source material and, like the source material, it stumbles and makes narrative jumps that seem to come from nowhere, particularly with respect to Alita's personality and how she ends up as a "hunter warrior". As a result, the combat becomes the glue that holds the story together, overcoming occasionally forced and wooden dialogue until it finally trips over itself in a forced sequel hook which features the worst "nooo!" scream since Hayden Christensen launched a thousand memes.

A must watch for fans of the original series that's better than the adaptations of Ghost in the Shell and Dragonball, but that's about the best that can be said of it.… Expand

Nisso, a obra não faz mal. Fiquei preso até o fim, mas a falta de Lore Content e personagens realmente bem feitos me afastaram da trama. Tínhamos atores como: Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali e Edward Norton, mas eles pareciam estar ali apenas pelo rosto. Contudo, Rosa Salazar brilha em dar vida a Alita, expressando um enorme sentimento nas expressões e passando uma sensação agradável que nos ganha fácil.

No entanto, não foi o suficiente para elevar o nível do filme. É um bom entretenimento, mas o que deixa triste é que poderia ser be mais.… Expand

My feelings are very mixed for this film. On one hand, it totally delivers on the unique sci-fi world and entertaining action sequences I had hoped for when hearing about James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez teaming up. On one hand, it totally delivers on the unique sci-fi world and entertaining action sequences I had hoped for when hearing about James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez teaming up. On the other, it totally delivers on the “Disney Channel”-level writing and acting that I was expecting after seeing the trailers for it. The love interest is the worst part of the film and their romance that blossoms is difficult to watch. Nearly every line of dialogue ranges from cheesy to terrible, producing several unintentional laughs from the audience. Rosa Salazar is solid in the titular role and I really hope to see her in something this big again, just with a better script next time. It’s really the action that makes this film though. Alita is undoubtedly entertaining during those sequences and I was really surprised by the amount of violence in it, considering it’s PG-13 rating. It’s a really stupid movie but, honestly, it’s also pretty cool and the world presented is just stunning and awe-inspiring to look at.  Grade: C+… Expand

Years ago, I watched the original video animation that this movie is heavily based on; after becoming a fan of it and reading through the entire manga up until the latest volume of the current series, this movie arrives in theaters withYears ago, I watched the original video animation that this movie is heavily based on; after becoming a fan of it and reading through the entire manga up until the latest volume of the current series, this movie arrives in theaters with intent to introduce Yukito Kishiro's cyberpunk classic to more people.
This may be Robert Rodriguez's most successful and expensive film ever. However this may be the biggest failure of James Cameron's screenwriting career.
It's like James took everything he liked about the manga and scrambled it like eggs. Some narrative plot lines are now completely deviating from it's source material, but overall I thought it was just meh. I guess the CGI was very impressive, but every time Alita smiled I couldn't help but laugh.… Expand

It's filled with quite a few sci-fi cliches, subpar acting, dialogue, and character effects, and a story that felt neither very inspired nor all that extraordinary like the big budget and heavy advertising on this film would have you believe. Granted, the production design and background effects looked pretty great, but that's really the only pro I can think of for this film. Seriously though, the effects of the non-human characters and the big eyes on Alita just looked weird and ridiculous to me. Overall, mediocre and weird character effects, an uninspired story with clumsy dialogue, etc plenty of sci-fi cliches and tropes borrowed from many other sci-fi films, and you have what I consider to be an ambitious yet ultimately pretty corny and inferior sci-fi romp.… Expand

Rober Rodriguez is always an odd choice given that he is not the best storyteller nor director for his actors. As usual, when James Cameron is the screenwriter, there is always the same arc, plot holes and the...
SPOILER
...the love interest always dying. It is quite clear that there is an intentional setup for a sequel, which is usually why there are so many questions unanswered. But we definitely need more on where she came from and why she didn't visit the command deck on the fallen ship again...
The script is written in a way that we really don't care about them, even when they are killed off...such as Vector, Shereen, Ido or even Hugo...

This movie could have been this year's breakthrough, but the directing and script really ruined it.… Expand

Bon déjà, j'espère qu'il y aura au moins deux autres films au vu de la fin abrupte (découpée à la lame mono-moléculaire) comme s'il manquait une demi-heure qu'on avait hâchée à la dernière minute, car on est carrément coupé dans notre élanBon déjà, j'espère qu'il y aura au moins deux autres films au vu de la fin abrupte (découpée à la lame mono-moléculaire) comme s'il manquait une demi-heure qu'on avait hâchée à la dernière minute, car on est carrément coupé dans notre élan (et nos espoirs) de belle et bonne adaptation...

L'adaptation (visuelle) est au moins belle, très belle en tout cas et voir le monde de Gunnm prendre vie ainsi est comme un rêve d'enfant devenu réalité : magnifiques effets spéciaux mais aussi très belle direction artistique, dans l'ensemble fort fidèle à l'oeuvre de Yukito Kishiro. Tellement fidèle qu'ils ont cru bon refaire les yeux énormes de Gally... pour de vrai. Mais alors, le nez d'Ido aurait dû être beaucoup plus long à ce tarif-là... et ainsi de suite.

Quelqu'un aurait peut-être dû leur expliquer que les grand yeux dans les mangas, c'est un mode (et une mode) d'expression, une sorte de tic à ne pas prendre au pied de la lettre...

Quoi qu'il en soit, les combats, très bien fichus, restituent l'adrénaline ressentie dans le manga, via une mise en scène soignée et spectaculaire avec quelques chouettes ralentis : bref, c'est du sérieux et du solide. Evidemment, la violence reste édulcorée, voire presque bisounours en fait... pour ne pas se couper de l'audience des ados et des enfants, je présume. De même, il manque le cynisme et l'ironie du manga, que seul un Verhoeven aurait pu retranscrire sur le grand écran ! Côté scénario, ils s'en sont pas trop mal sortis... si on fait abstraction d'étranges détours pour aboutir au même point que dans l'oeuvre originale. Mais bon... en fait, c'est surtout le personnage de Jennifer Connelly qui fait pièce rapportée.

Globalement, le film n'est pas mauvais mais reste malheureusement décevant -en substance- comparé au manga. Il faut dire qu'il est exceptionnel le manga et très difficile à adapter... mais depuis le temps que le projet était en chantier, on ne peut qu'être assez désappointé. Vivement les suites, pour voir si ça s'arrange ou si ça sombre... corps et biens.… Expand

* Some white washing: the names are Americanized, characters change ethnicity, etc ...
* We miss the soul of the Manga in its finest: the satire of society, violence, the quest for oneself, etc ...
* It's a teen movie. The whole film is based on Y (h) ugo and his love story like in a Beverly Hills episode.
* Nova, who is presented as the big bad guy but who is badly brought in.
* The motorball, false advertising with a discount cast and a **** stage release.
* Does the whole cast have Gally's phone? Because they call him all the time, even during a motorball match.
* the visual rendering is too smooth, we do not realize the dirty side, sticky. There is lens flare everywhere, androids are too rare and when they are there it is often a head inlay on a 3D person that shines everywhere. We lose the identity of the thing, it could be done by J. J. Abrams.
* Some characters are completely missed: Yugo, Zapan (the total fail), Jashugan or Nova.
* The story. If I was not a die hard fan of the manga, would I have liked this movie? I do not think, if we put aside the fan service, the story is flat, even silly, the visual is more than anything and it seems to follow yet another movie like Hunger game, labyrinth, etc. ..
In short, read the manga or watch the OVAs, it's better… Expand

To clarify i´ve read the manga so im a bit harsher on this movie than some watchers. This movie is enjoyable if you like - gorgeous visuals - well directed action scenes - badass female characters. - good story with well written antagonists and a background story
- story which does not rely on exposition every 5 minutes
- well written romance - good side characters

- gritty atmosphere
- want the adaption to be faithful

The problem with the movie is that it takes to much from the source material and crams it into the movie so that the plot is a incoherent mess even tho the world/action/main protagonist are engaging. And on first sight it seems the adaption was faithful to the source material. But it isn´t. Every 10 minutes you will get a fanservice scene, if thats what you want go for it, however if you want the fan service scenes to be strung together so that the story is enjoyable and logical, well i need to dissapoint you. You won´t get it here. The director/propucer didn´t know what to adapt properly and in which order, thus the movie is only enjoyable if you want mindless action and gorgoeus visuals. Things which would have benefited the movie regardless of its story:

All of the top-notch technical qualities are not matched by the quality of the script Alita: Battle Angel. The story is really standard like other Apocalyptic Young Adult films. The story is really standard like other Apocalyptic Young Adult films. The characters are really bland, especially the actor Hugo, played by debutant Keean Johnson, who is not good enough and sympathetic. Keean is like there is no charisma in playing a male hero. Then, Christoph Waltz the 2 Oscars winner is quite wasted here. Meanwhile, Mahershala Ali had previously finished filming Alita before winning an Oscar thanks to the film Moonlight and Green Book, acting pretty well. He was able to show as a cruel and cold antagonist.

Actually the basic character of Alita is enough to attract sympathy from the audience, he is a person who is truly innocent and willing to help others. But the development of the character runs slowly, only at the end of the audience just found out who is Alita. Unfortunately when the audience has started to pervade the character, the film is suddenly left hanging as if to signal the existence of a sequel. This causes an anticlimax. Stunning visual quality like the movie Avatar and eye-popping 3D effects that really spoil the eye is not enough to cover the standard story and the bland and non-developing characters. New audiences are attracted to the characters towards the end of the story, but unfortunately more films are left anticlimactic so that later there will be a sequel (if successful).… Expand

Let me begin this by saying I really wanted to like this movie. Even watched it a 2nd time hoping I overlooked something or maybe I was just in a mood, but it got even worse the 2nd time. The only saving grace to this movie (though at times were a bit over the top) were the special effects, but honestly, if you didn't see this movie in 3D you missed out on the movie's only good quality. As for the 3D, though good, especially during the fight scenes that they obviously put a lot of time and effort into, most times felt like a flat experience having you forget you were in a 3D movie (though pay special attention to crowd scenes like the early scenes in the marketplace, you can see great depth between people which very well may be overlooked because done so well). But none of the effects were so good to make you overlook the cringe-worthy dialogue/acting. Which I couldn't tell if they are just bad actors that couldn't bring the words to life and speak them as actual human beings interact, or if the script was just that bad. Either way, the end result is the same. Beyond that, the character development was severely lacking, and outside of Alita I found myself constantly trying to remind myself what each character’s name is. To cap it all off for me was the forced love story, that goes from meeting each other to “I would die for you” in what seems 2 days time. This movie is a catch22, because the movie I believe at best is wait for it to come to Redbox/FX, but then you miss out on the 3D effects that make the movie watchable, but then it's not worth the exorbitant amount they charge for 3D movies.… Expand

It started off really interesting but devolved into a teenage love story/transformers movie. The ending was extremely unfulfilling and left so much unexplained and untouched. So many scenes in the film just didn't make sense. They wasted time on making sure Hugo didn't die only to kill him off again in the next scene he was in. And the brutality scenes were so cringe worthy and tacked on it crippled the movie.

You're not allowed to feel anything for the characters in this movie cause it doesn't give you time to and it smashes you over the head with nonsensical **** Literally two seconds after the dog is killed in the bar, Alita smearing it's blood on her face. That's another level of **** up and completely subverts Alita's character. Then this doctor saves Hugo and goes to tell her boss off and somehow before the next scene, they have time to disembowel her and put as a wall trophy. The pacing is so awful it ruins the viewer's suspension of disbelief. We spend all this time building up to a confrontation with Nova and we get zero payoff. She loses her boyfriend for the 2nd time and what does Alita decide to do? She goes and plays Motorball for months. We get a cheesy closing scene where she points her sword at the city overhead and that's it. And this is supposed to be an above average movie? No **** way, not in my book.

The movie started off great. Then as it proceeds it just fails to expand on any previous plot points it set up previously. It leads the viewer down a path and suddenly goes off the rails trying to do something completely different. If James Cameron wanted the plot of the movie to be a love story/motorball tournament then center it around that and don't screw around with half finished bits of another story. Obviously this movie was set up to have sequels and that is likely what attributes to it's failure as a film. A movie should be able to stand on it's own weight regardless if there will be a sequel or not. This movie fails to do that. It has great action scenes, likeable main characters and beautiful CGI but it fails to have a compelling plot and take it's own story seriously which drags it's score down severely. I'd still give it a average score just because the action scenes were so good and in between the head scratching scenes where the story was happening it was genuinely fun to watch.

So as a young lad I saw this as an anime on the old Sci-Fi (yes, they actually used to be called Sci-Fi as in Science Fiction, I know its mindblowing) Channel's Saturday Anime block alongside other greats like Vampire Hunter D and Akira.So as a young lad I saw this as an anime on the old Sci-Fi (yes, they actually used to be called Sci-Fi as in Science Fiction, I know its mindblowing) Channel's Saturday Anime block alongside other greats like Vampire Hunter D and Akira. While not as gripping as these others, it did have very interesting elements to it that I found intriguing.
This "live action" adaptation is not doing the anime (or manga for that matter) much justice. The film starts by trying to lure people into Alita's character by giving her a childlike demeanor and wonder. This all falls quite flat though when she starts showing off her latent abilities. Later they then try and lure you in a second time by making her character develop relationships and affections so you can be reminded she isn't just a robot, but a cyborg.
In the end the story has too much backstory to covey and hides most of it for the supposed Sequel (so help me god if they call it anything with "Tears" in it I will be very upset). So what happens is the entirety of the film is character development for Alita, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but they never really flesh out her character. Is she bent on revenge, does she want her memories back, is she looking for answers from her past, and so on and so on. The only real driving force seems to be a lust for battle, a very strong message delivered in the anime and manga.
The thing that rally got me was all the goofy cyborgs. This movie works better as a cartoon. Having real faces of real people basically CGI-ed onto robotic frames got very old. And di you know the people who brought you "Avatar" did this? I sure did when I saw Alita's comically large eyes. I was not sure if this was an Avatar get or a bad jab at anime/manga characters having large eyes (by the way they are drawn that way because Japanese people find beady eyes disturbing and/or shifty, they really think Mickey Mouse is some kind of villain, I swear). To put it bluntly the visual effects are good, but they are also overused. Everything looks fake and you know its fake and that's the crux of it. The nurse lady is the only cyborg who even remotely looks cool and she gets like 3 minutes of screen time the entire film.
So in the end, save yourself the trouble and just watch the OVA Anime. Its not great, but its better fair than this and since it is animated you won't have ghost faces pasted onto CGI robots.… Expand

Secondly, the Z-axis has depth in both directions and is artistically and commercially perfectly valid put to its fullest use as a canvas! GO WITH IT OR DON'T RELEASE IN 3D! Idiots, subtly immersive is something called 2D and without the stupid glasses and 30% up charge! How can you Hollywood drones all be so damn timid and ignorant of this?!

To top it off, the terribly designed unfit for market Dolby active shutter glasses are so narrow the field of view is dramatically cropped, which IS incredibly distracting!… Expand

I know films are mostly subjective, but I do not understand the high user score for this film. It's not the worst film I've seen, but it's the worst in awhile. Bad: Sloppy movie making/storytelling, cliched scenarios and scenes, questionable casting/acting for some, poor uncanny valley/green screen FX in certain parts, and so on. Let me give you a mostly spoiler free example so as to not be confused for a troll or "hater." There's a scene where the good guy takes a very high valued weapon away from the bad guy. Then the good guy drops said weapon in front of the bad guy during some dialogue for no reason. The bad guy picks it up and uses the weapon. I could go into more detail with this scene and many others, but this movie is plagued with them. Add that to someone other complaints and you get a really, comical, but not intended to be comical, sloppy movie that I think won people over with action rather than substance....yes, even with consideration that it's "blockbuster" or "popcorn flick."… Expand

I felt quite inspired by this passion of united Twitter users to guarantee everyone who worked hard in the film industry gets their glorious well-earned moment. As a bonus, it’s proven why Alita: Battle Angel carries no rhythmic impact on filmmakers like that of the 91st Annual Academy Award winners.

We all face decisions similar to what the Academy had to make, some for better, some for worse. Take the blue pill, and you force four categories into commercial break to shorten the show. Take the red pill, and you see equal, nondiscretionary treatment. Which sounds best? Seeing how Alita makes zero character development throughout her adventure, I guess that means she chose the blue pill, preferring what is convenient to gain a wider audience instead of what is best for everybody. Did her plan work though? Let’s take a look…

Alita lives in an Iron City that apparently lacks wealth, which isn’t easy to conclude since this high-tech India-esque area practically resembles a paradise for any sci-fi lover. Right next to Iron City rests a massive junkyard where the scraps of that sky city wind up at the end of the day. That is where Iron City obtains its supplies, and ultimately where a Doctor Frankenstein rip-off found his anime-eyed creation’s scattered parts. This means there’s no real ground to work off of, particularly when struggling to sound heartbroken through pathetic sad scenes with the atrocious actor playing her cheap boyfriend. That actor’s slothful eyes generate just one negative factor as co-writers James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez resort to stupid expository details in their worldbuilding, such as cyborg blood being turquoise for some reason other than to look cool.

As for the bigger actors, Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds) probably isn’t aware he’s co-leading a futile promotion of Marxism reliant on a self-righteous “chosen one” plot trope. Hence, he must’ve figured, “Why bother trying? The sound editors will improve my voice anyway!” Yes, Waltz’s pathetic accent manages to be weaker than the normalized human-robot love that throws in insincere dialogue such as, “You are the most human person that I have ever met.” (facepalm)

The same issue of acting goes to Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream). Here, she does nothing but insult the dedicated actors, actresses, supporting actors, and supporting actresses of Hollywood with her lazy demonic eyes and overly dramatic, shallow laughter from a voice deprived of security.

Now, take a minute to observe the entire Star Wars series before Disney bought them: It was nowhere near perfect (in fact, the original trilogy is just okay), but still attempted decency with its audience… until the prequels attacked. Yes, it’s at least acceptable in the visuals big and small, as the Battle Angel’s almost square jet-black hair matches the Plutocratic sky city; just don’t count on there being any memorability from Alita, even if the cinematic quality leans closer toward the Star Wars originals than the prequels.

Although the setup deserves some praise for sure, as does some awesome fight choreography to appropriately set the numerous emotional roller coaster peaks in a way that allows them all to complement each other. After Alita first comes back to life, without any surviving memories, she disdainfully eats an orange, peel and all, as if it were an apple, but ends up liking the fruit once peeled, and later loves chocolate even more; these moments of revelation prove to be effective in raising your spirits. To contrast that orange color reflected onto the heat-tinted city, she wears a gentle shirt of delicious damson that makes her look alienated on the streets full of roller bladers. It leaves to little surprise why Alita connects easily with a dog, a bond that later breaks your heart.

Too bad though that Alita: Battle Angel remains at the end of the day another mere piece of white noise forgotten amongst the genuinely terrific motion pictures, those that social media users believe are worth speaking up to the Academy about, those that prove unity through a common passion. There’s nothing of significance this movie will do to the personal legacies on Robert Rodriguez or James Cameron beyond what they did in the past, it’s just filler to make time and money for greater projects… such as those numerous Avatar sequels. While we can allow the cinema arts to grow year after year, sadly not every movie can be saved from mediocrity.… Expand

The result is a mess, with hollow characters, plots that goes nowhere or some that don't even happen in the manga.
Why did they remove most of the characters's back story to add this "heart" intrigue that reminds more of Ironman's Ark reactor than any of the stories written by Yukito Kishiro ? People may enjoy the movie for its incredible visuals but many will cringe on the bad writting and as a fan of the manga, it just feels like a failed opportunity to give this masterpiece the movie it deserves.… Expand

Now if your a fan of this anime show then you will probably be happy with this film, but I never watched the show or knew any of these characters so maybe I didn't like this film because I've never known it before. But as a movie this film is filled with so many flaws. In regards to positives this film is visually stunning, I know its only Feb but for 2019 visual effects Oscars this film should have it in the bag. There are some cool action scenes, the acting is also good. But I didn't really like anything else. Most of the others action scenes for me felt so repetitive and derivative. The villain is so underused and is just the big bad guy in the chair who sends various goons after Alita. There's a relationship that is formed between some characters that I don't feel any connection to. Basically every supporting character is useless or bland. There's also a lot of script problems, some very cringe dialogue that I don't think they're trying to make it cringe. The main plot is very messy and poorly structured and there's never truly any reason to even care about our main hero. So a very weak movie with some ok elements but a movie that left me wanting more.… Expand

World building was amazing, Alita was adorable and you wanted to watch her succeed. The villains are definitely interesting in the beginning. After a bar brawl, the night shift of the editing team walked in and the hack job that ensued was such a confusing lamentable mess that it just let me wondering about all the unanswered questions that were left hanging there. Also right after that, characters started immediately doing things you wouldn't see them doing. All the motivations that were created in the first half were gone, replaced by i don't even know what. Ending was NOT satisfying. I'll probably actually buy this movie, and then watch the first half. I want to know about this world that was created, but i just don't know if i trust the team behind it to properly carry out James Cameron's vision.… Expand

This was an unnecessary adaptation of the Japanese Anime. You are as confused about this world before, as you are after watching this movie. This is a perfectly good example that extreme use of CGI galore doesn't make a good movie, and even makes it lacking some soul.

The original main theme of the Anime is the childlike innocence relationship between Hugo and Alita. But in this live action movie that relationship was a bit under the radar, and it got replaced by fast paced illogical action sequences. Many people who saw the movie gets the wrong impressions. It didn't capture the essence of the manga. This movie shouldn't be about Alita alone, it's about the people around her.

As for the CGI. I know that Alita is supposed to be a Cyborg, but her emotions on screen are a bit fake. Gestures and smiles were often misplaced. However she is also too much CGI to look like a Cyborg. Maybe it would have worked better to use a human face instead of a CGI generated one. Especially when all other Cyborgs in this movie did use human faces which made it look more natural. And with Alita being the only one CGI generated, it seemed a little bit off...

It doesn't have the gritty and cyberpunk feel of the original anime/manga. The dialogues were plain and not memorable. Character building is not well fleshed out, and that is maybe due to poor casting. The role of Hugo was highly underestimated and needed a bigger caliber young actor to fully display its persona. Hugo was a big part what drives Alita, and Hugos insane obsession with the Sky City Zalem didn't got through in this movie. The movie didnt make you feel anything for the characters, and that was the main thing that made the Anime a success in the first place.… Expand

Now I get why Speed Racer didn't do better. It really makes a difference if you're into the comics/cartoons with these two movies. It was , for me, a great, live-action depiction of an anime classic. But not everyone watched it when they were kids and that absolutely played into its box office performance.

Alita suffered the same I feel. I knew nothing about it, and it seems like there's a loved in world going on, but I never lived in it. For me, it was a YA cash grab that fell short. Kinda reminded me of SR and Robots. It lacked depth that I'm positive was provided elsewhere. And it came off extremely silly at times.

On another note, I find it funny now that its marketers tried to use a "hey, at least it's not Captain Marvel" strategy. Nope, ots not, and I have to admit the plot was better, but not by much. The eyes didn't bother me, tbh, but ironically, Christoph Waltz' hat did.… Expand

Alita is unfortunately a disappointing mess of poorly woven together cliche story lines. On top of all this, the pacing of this film was terrible making it feel considerably longer than its actual two hour length.

Overall then this movie has a script and dialogue that felt like it was written by a ten year old with little understanding of human interaction. In addition characters the plot points are horribly cliched and overdone. Apart from some of the visuals this movie has nothing to offer, avoid unless you have literaly nothing else to do.

P.s. Christoph Waltz is completely wasted in a film this poor.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film is a complete **** It all starts with the fact that our heroine is found in a landfill (hmm, how did she get there? (We won't find out)), she is found there by a local dock and repairs it with a body meant for his late daughter. Next, we are introduced to a guy who works on the dock getting parts. For 8 damn days, they "know each other" and Alita is ready to give her heart for his dream. **** after that I walked out of the cinema.

I nearly fell asleep halfway through because it was so dull- the story was not at all consistent and jumped from one subject to the other that I honestly didn't know what was happening anymore, and it was super predictable in every way. nothing in this film made me go "oh, didn't see that coming" except for when the dog gets murdered, but it made me so mad I wanted to leave the cinema. I stuck through it till the end, only for there to be a cliff hanger to set up the second movie that I somewhat wish will be better than this one? But let's be real, there are never any good sequels to films. The three stars are only for the CGI.… Expand

The director Robert Rodriguez persists on applying makeup to every frame of the film. Every scene is beautified to be adored on large screen but then he also craves for the harrowing images that apparently is to express the other side of this world. This mixture of alluring and disturbing images should have attended the perfect balance. And yet, it breathes sad air, poignancy, irreplaceable and annoyingly unsettling is the feeling you are left with. Addition to that, loud and cheesy background score, poor editing, amateur camera work and chalky conversation gives away the film within its first five minutes.

A film that then, runs on formulaic structure that was found to be outdated ten years ago, is just a cherry on top. The crown is snatched from Godzilla: The King Of Monsters, that was considered to be the worst investment of the year. The action is more obsessed on painting the frame, in fact any physical sequence for that matter, the makers are persuasive on coloring the film with crowd pleasing color rather than work on the choreography or the momentum behind those empty punches.

The vfx that everyone is drooling about, is yes, admirable but still not highly detailed or perpetually convincing, simply put it this way, I have seen better, polished and much smoother, than in this so called futuristic world. Each character is given an introduction individually, a smart move if you have somewhere deep to go, they are as thin as wafer and transparent as water. In fact, the only way you see someone surprise you, is Christoph Waltz, who through his performance sculpts a resonant message as he fixes Rosa Salazar's- aka Alita: Battle Angel- suit before she enters the competition.… Expand

I'm going to try to explain why this movie was not good, in fact, I think it was one of the worst movies that Robert Rodriguez has ever directed and he helped to created Sin City and El Mariachi which were great movies I have seen and it's probably not his fault. Let me just say first, I don't know anything about Yukito Kishiro's manga series so I don't know if anything from the movie was entirely from the manga. Another thing is that I wouldn't blame on the director as it is pretty hard to take parts of the manga (I think) and create a movie out of it which I think it's challenging because of other anime adaptation tried to something like that but failed (Netflix's Death Note, Ghost in the Shell and Oh god Dragonball Evolution). Lastly, if you do enjoy this movie, don't make this review stop you for liking a movie you did enjoy. If you like it, then alright. Okay finally onto the review:

Before I say anything negative about it and trust me there are a lot of bad things about it. First things first, Christoph Waltz was the only good actor in that movie. He can show emotion from his tone and face and his dialogue was pretty good which was surprising. Half the time, the CGI sometimes looks great such as Alita. I think they did a good job rendering her into this world and looks quite realistic which I find it quite weird because of those big eyes and yes I know it's from the manga but I just find it quite weird. Alright now for the negatives, Alita's characteristics and performance from the actress is really bad. She tries to show off her abilities and skills like with the bar scene when she shows off her hunter warrior's badge and she acts like a brat when she shows it to Zapan and then she makes this I think was a speech but I was so distracted by how the actress said it. She sounded so lazy and just made me cringe a lot. They also have these flashbacks to her past and they weren't developed much, a few flashbacks and that ship and that's it which makes me think that there's going to be a sequel. Anyway, there's two-scenes which was Alita screaming something that you would do when you karate chops a plank of wood which again made me cringe. She even figured out where Hugo lived without explaining how she figured that out. What did she do? Go through every house in the city until she finally comes across his house waits for him to wake for god knows how long, it just doesn't make any since. Jennifer Connelly is the even worst. She is so expressionless with no emotion I thought she was a robot for a second and then decided to become the good guy towards the end whilst in the beginning, she hated her because she has the body of her dead daughter but there's no god damn reason why she turned to be a good guy. So the other half of the CGI looks awful, the city they live sure has small details to make it look like a dumpster but Hugo's CGI robot suit was terrible and the actor's head literally pops out from the CGI and you can tell that and I want to explain one scene which doesn't explain anything. So Hugo's is being wanted for a murder that he didn't do which first of all is stupid because of Zapan was the one who killed his best friend and a victim and they don't have any evidence to explain why he was guilty, you can tell that it was a sword slash and SURPRISE he doesn't have a sword and yet he's guilty. What the hell. Once Hugo recovered, he left Dr. Dyson's house and somehow gets on these giant metal ropes which leads to this sky city which by the way I have no **** idea what's in that city and nobody explains what's in that city or any information other then it's for some special people. Anyway, he somehow got onto the rope WITHOUT getting shot from those mechs. These no security to stop him. Alita arrived and for some reason, the guy in the control room finally saw people on the rope. WTF, you didn't see him before you got to kidding me. The Ending is unsatisfying and I think people see that as well. This probably gives a hint that again there's probably a sequel.

Honestly, I expected better than this load of crap and don't get why reviewers like this and guess what, I'm not even done with my review. There are too many negatives to this movie. Again, if you like this film, then it's alright. Don't make me stop you from liking it but I hope you can see my reason as too why I think this is a bad movie.… Expand

Alita: Battle Angel is the story of a utopian society where guns have been outlawed and regular people are paid to enforce the law by their corporate overlords at night, because the mechanized military force can’t be bothered and everyone else is too busy Ubering women home from the club to their doom.

The plot is fairly muddled: Alita doesn’t know if she wants to be a manic pixie dream girlfriend or a naïve cyborg daughter or a rebellious teenager or the leader of a sci-fi rebellion or a professional roller skater (sic). Which is fine, but it means that there are points when it seems like the movie is being drawn and quartered by romantic and action plots, like the moment when she’s lined up for the Big Game and she simultaneously gets phone calls from both the Doctor telling her to abandon her post and her boyfriend who needs her help in a completely different place. It’s easy to imagine that what the film intended was to show that Alita contains multitudes and wears different masks for different people, a bit of powering wish fulfillment here and an emotionally accessible boyfriend there, but in some sense Alita comes off as a little shallow and restless.

Christoph Waltz’s backstory is pretty shady, which is also fine–there’s something to be said for leaving the audience wanting more, creating drama through mystery. It’s unclear what his daughter’s deal was that required him to build her “fast legs,” or if he was just unwilling to live in a world where his daughter would have to–god forbid–wheel herself around like any other person with a mobility issue. Which brings up a point about disability in the year 2400: it certain seems like a lot of people who would otherwise just be heads and spinal columns are turning into enhanced bounty hunters for little or no money. The doctor’s moral objection to rocket ball racing don’t seem to be that hard and fast when Alita decides it’s the only way she’s going to be able to jog her amnesiac memory–even though it seems like the “demon” of his former involvement spawned his disgust.

If I were the nurse from this film, Dr. Ido’s assistant, I would be a little miffed. She had some lines and she clearly is helping keep the business afloat, but Alita kind of creepily avoids her in any scene where they’re together. She calls the doctor “dad” in front of her, snuggles up with him on the coach, under the nurse’s grossed out frown, without so much as a “hello” or a “thank you for playing a role in reviving me twice.”

With an eye squarely on the ending of the film: it seems like Alita isn’t actually able to accomplish very much aside from her journey of self-discovery. At no point does it seem like she’s in danger of facing a competent foe. The lackeys of the villain are constantly depending on sub-optimal grunts to do their dirty work, which makes it a little surprising when they are able to score even a little scratch on the most advanced piece of (Martian?) weaponry in centuries. The villain relies on a form of hypnosis (which I find narratively boring) in order to project himself on the lower world. I know that this is an adaptation of a manga and that that magna exists as part of a certain aesthetic of sci-fi dystopias, but where I’ve seen it done best is in Rick Remender and Sean Murphy’s Tokyo Ghost, which for a number of reasons finds ways to transcend the clichés of the genre.

Tokyo Ghost, if I can get off track for a moment, still has the consumerist battle royale race car scenes, the man-to-man brawls, the journey of self-discovery, the empowered woman hero, and the anti-war critique, but it does not give itself over completely to those flashier elements of storytelling. It grounds itself in issues of environmental destruction and corporate oligarchy. So, I bring it up primarily to point to it as a path not taken in the conception of the original source material.

For a different perspective, Friend has always been a big proponent of “original sci-fi” movies and liked everything about this movie except all the scenes with the boy, who was terrible–this was constant critique whenever he saw the trailers. Wife seconded that by saying that at no point does he seem like a nice guy. He spends a lot of time creeping on a two-day old cyborg teenager, despite being old enough to drink alcohol with the owner of the race track. He cuts their dates short to do horrible things to innocent people on the streets. And he just generally spends a lot of time committing sins of omission, besides being a poor jumper.

Film in general seems like it was a bit of a mess, but no so outrageously stupid that you should avoid it. For more on uncanny valleys and the disappointing CGI check out the Imaginary Worlds podcast, unfortunately behind a Spotify paywall. Also look at Josh Spiegel’s take on “the pitfalls of sequel-building,” and take heed of calls punish high profile producers of the film.… Expand

Every storyline could have stood on its own and made an excellent movie.

The characters are bereft of nuisance and lacking in the depth that made them original in the source material. They are introduced as cardboard cutouts and with no reason to care about who they are and what they want.

And the worst part is that the movie ends on a dead note; there is no climax, no highlight, no grand finale. And to add to the insult; it ends with "to be continued".… Expand

A movie about teen robot puberty. The dialog is simplistic with the characters displaying idealistic etiquette. It's filled with quite a few sci-fi cliches, subpar acting, dialogue, and character effects, and a story that felt neither very inspired nor all that extraordinary like the big budget and heavy advertising on this film would have you believe.

Despite a solid cast and director, Alita just didn't do anything for me. The CG felt very out of place and looked downright terrible at times. The story is very lacking as well. Saw the Dolby Cinema 3D Pre-show and I was really disappointed to see a amazing manga turned into a really crappy mess. They should have just made a full CGI film in Japanese.

I'm just kind of disappointed. The movie draws a lot more from the OVA than the manga, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The bad thing is the way the movie skips over things and mishmashes the story bits it does choose to use into anI'm just kind of disappointed. The reasoning is explained and fleshed out in both the OVA and manga, but here there is none. Motorball gets shoehorned in as a plot device so that Alita can make money to get up to Zalem *after she says she can make enough money hunting bounties.* The only reason it's there was for visual effects, which is really all I'm seeing praise for in the other reviews.

I could go on for awhile about all the things in this movie that irritate me as a fan of the original work, but the inconsistencies in the characters and plot in the context of just the movie are the reason I'm giving this a low score. It was pretty, at least.… Expand

"grossing a respectable $404.9 million worldwide, not enough to guarantee a sequel". Not only did this movie take 20 years to make but the next one isn't even likely to happen. That's all movies are nowadays, lets end with some massive cliff hanger never really getting to the end leaving the audience with complete blue balls hating their damn lifes so they come onto metacritic in the hope these idiots take some advice. Stop wasting out da*n time watching this crap just to be left with NOTHING. Yeah she just watches her boyfriend die then joins the "roller ball" league of whatever. Brilliant absolutely brilliant. I hope you enjoy your money because that's all your getting from this. Nobody is impressed and the people rating this positive are simply here for the pretty colors. Simply a waste of time. DO not watch this movie if you are finally trying to find a show with an acutally ending. AND NO rodtard, theres NO ENDING. nothing not a single bit. This should be the first episode of a series. Ridicolous and neither of you should call yourself directors, because you dont give a flying about the watching experience and just want to see the $$$ signs roll in.
