Amazing sci-fi cyberpunk blockbuster with heart.

It's been a long time since I enjoyed a movie so much, A true strong female character that shows that you can be bad ass and feminine at the same time. It was exciting, and the movie really put a smile on my face. I watched it three times and will do again. Best CGI to date, great emotional story, amazing character development, a lot of fun and outstanding action.

Alita caught my heart the very first moment she opened her beautiful eyes. What a likeable person, discovering and enjoying the simple things at life like eating a orange or chocolate. The movie take you by the hand and directs you through a very emotionaly rollercoaster drive.

Alitas development from a innocent girl to a strong hero fighting against the evil is such an intense experience. This is my favorite movie for now. I also bought the manga to know more about this fantastic world. The blu-ray will be bought as soon as it hits the market. I really hope for a sequel, this movie is AMAZING!

Absolutely loved this file. Alita is the movie of the year for me. Rosa Salazar did a Oscar worthy performance bringing Alita to life, and there is no way you can't fall in love with her character. And no words can explain the action and special effects.

Beautiful and touching stories. Not to mention the amazing effects and fighting scenes. Great stories and when it's ended, you felt like, what!?? Haven't watched enough. I want to watch more!!!

James Cameron has been dreaming about making Alita: Battle Angel for decades. He bought the rights to the 90s manga and has been sitting on the property, having to continuously push it back because of technological demands and the demands for Avatar sequels. Cameron co-wrote the screenplay and handed the directorial duties over to Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), a talented visual stylist who has been struggling of late. The marriage looks good and the final 122-minute feature is the closest a live-action film has ever gotten into replicating the look and feel of an anime.

I never give my opinions on here about movies, but this was worth doing for me. I'm not familiar with any anime which I guess this is based on, but I thought it was a really good movie and from other reviews I have read, did the series it was based on justice.

As far as how the critics are rating it, I don't often agree with them and this is no exception. I don't use a checklist to decide if a movie is good or not. I would much rather decide for myself.

Really just a beautiful art piece. Especially Alitas facial animation is just wonderful. And the fight scenes are the best I've ever seen. There's one low gravity fight scene that really just blew me away. I can't really express how impressed I'm with the graphical artwork in this movie. Expand

The movie looks and feels just like a live-action anime. I was unsure about this movieI cannot believe the critics gave such low scores to this movie. I saw it on the second weekend of its release in theaters and I was absolutely blown away. The movie looks and feels just like a live-action anime. I was unsure about this movie when I first saw the trailer but after I did a little research I discovered that it was adapted from an old anime/manga, so that was a huge selling point for me. As a huge fan of anime I am thoroughly impressed. This is literally the best live-action adaptation of any anime property, period. The bar was already set pretty low after recent epic failures such as Ghost In The Shell and Netflix's Death Note, which both utterly annihilated the source material they were adapted from. This made me more than skeptical of Alita: Battle Angel but the movie ended up blowing my expectations out of the water. I can understand now why the critic average is so low on this film which is certainly going to become a cult classic. Anime/manga stories are deep and complicated with many intersecting plot-lines, and a lot of bizarre and abstract ideas. Alita: Battle Angel strikes this chord perfectly with a stunning adaptation that remains faithful to its canon in almost every aspect. I watched the anime episodes after seeing the movie and I was almost shocked at Robert Rodriguez's and James Cameron's attention to detail. They really didn't want to disappoint fans of anime/manga. The problem is this type of film might be too much for the average critic or moviegoer. This is not a Marvel movie. You will have to actually think about what's happening, and there are some profound and even disturbing ideas presented. That's what anime/manga is known for. It's really sad that this under-appreciated gem would become lost in the influx of superhero films that dominate the box office. They took a huge gamble with a hefty budget on this film and it probably will not generate the revenue that studio bigwigs were hoping for. I'm hoping that word of mouth can boost support for this awesome sci-fi extravaganza because this is what both Hollywood and anime has needed. The film ended on a major cliffhanger and I would really like to see the story continued. Expand

The Story was captivating, the visuals where stunning, you felt with every character. It was an emotional rollercoaster ride. I laughed with her, i was on fire for her, i cried with her. I am still blown away (4 days later).
That is how a good Sci-fi superhero movie looks like! And the PR for that movie? They gave Tilly new Arms, that grow with her!!! Does it get any better?
For that alone the movie was worth my money!

PS: And those "pro"-critics either are getting numb in the Brain from all those movies, or they are heartless like rocks. How can you hate on her romance arc? It was in the book, it was in the anime, it was executed well. Pull that stick out of your but!

I was worried that it can end up as another 'college drama' with sci-fi background, typical product from Hollywood. But it's not! My impression was that this movie was divided between day time scenes made by Cameron and night time scenes made by Rodriguez which together gives a nice mixture of two goods. I was surprised that they put so much in such short time and it does not make me feel like I don't know what's going on. I know Manga which helps a bit but there's a lot of small changes that have impact on the story and I'm pretty sure that even people who don't know source material will follow the story without any problem. Despite that there's a lot of small changes in the story it was done pretty well. Usually changes from original material are weak and sometimes even so radical that movie is an insult to original source. But here I enjoyed all of them because all changes were made with a taste and with a respect to the original manga. So I'm pretty sure that all or most fans of GUNNM will be satisfied as this is one of rare movie interpretations done well and are not an insult to a fan. For those scared about 13 (12A) rating: there's nothing to fear. Like Rodriguez said, you just have to change 'human' to 'cyborg' and you are free to do a lot more in the movie than current rating allows to. Of course it's not a slasher or horror with blood everywhere but it's not what this movie or manga is about in the first place. Visually movie is stunning but it's not a something that I care that much so beside that it satisfied my eyes I leave written review about it to others who may have more to say. I would love to see a sequel or even more movies from Cameron/Rodriguez duo in GUNNM universe. I'm giving 10/10 but I don't belong to people who focus on finding every single trivial issue to complain about. Life is too short to do that. I walked satisfied from the cinema, I was entertained and it's what is the most important for me to give a score to the movie. Expand

I was NOT disappointed! For the bestI went and saw this movie last night with my fiance at AMC Riverpark Square in IMAX 3D. I had high hopes for this film ever since it was announced and knew James Cameron was tied to the production. I was NOT disappointed! For the best experience, I highly suggest seeing it in IMAX 3D as it'll better immerse you into the world and characters.

I think they did a great job at setting up the story. Beginning with Alita's mysterious past and then throughout the movie unlocking her character and history. I enjoyed the father daughter relationship between Alita and Christoph Waltz character, Dr. Ido. And the love interest between Alita and Hugo seemed natural, and not forced. Rosa Salazar, the actress behind Alita (along with digital artists at WETA Digital) did an amazing job at bringing the CGI character to life. I never got an "uncanny valley" feeling from Alita (despite her manga inspired facial aesthetic). It's probably some of the best special effects in film thus far.

Speaking of special effects...from crafting the world, to the cyborg side characters, to the action/battle sequences, everything was spectacular. Again, seeing it in IMAX 3D really let's these things shine.

Overall, I highly recommend this movie to any fans of Sci-Fi / Fantasy. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen. I hope it does well at the box office too, as they perfectly set everything up for sequels. Such a rich world, characters, etc...would love to see more of it.

Although some people complain about tonal inconsistency and cgi face of protagonist mapped over the face of actual actress(a necessity given Alita's original wide eyed innocent face look from manga), the visuals are still one of the best among commercially made movies. Story is neither too sophisticated nor a heap of garbage, as far as cyberpunk stories go, i'll give it a 6.5 and request viewers to give the makers a chance to provide depth and cover related lores in subsequent parts. I haven't read the manga by Yukito Kishiro but to those who have and given extremely low ratings(like 0, 2), it seems unfair to judge a movie solely by comparing its story with a manga series on which it's based because a manga has a lot more time to explore various facets and establish a universe. Alita battle angel is not only extremely enjoyable but a new milestone in visual spectacle and it's sad to see critics and some users rating it so low and crushing it's chances of getting a movie series, which can provide them with the depth and complexity they yearn for. I realize film is a different medium and the story has to change some. So often I've been disappointed by remakes losing the essence of characters and the story. Not so with Alita: Battle Angel. The duality of Alitas charm and ferocity is transmitted off the screen and into our hearts. The action sequences are not only entertaining but quick and brutal as one expects from machines. The city feels alive and massive. A masterpiece of a remake and true to the spirit of the original, like no other big budget live action adaptation has been. I hope this is a sign of things to come! Alita Battle Angel is what happens when Hollywood finally get an Anime film right, ive gotta say James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez should work more together because this film is incredible.

This film had heart and soul poured into its story and you could tell that 1000 of hours of work have gone into making this film. They've pulled one of the best films this year with incredible visual effects and CGI work that give this film a beautiful setting and background.

The visual effect of Alita (voiced by Rosa Salazar) we're incredibly done giving detail in her eyes which made her character on screen look more like an actual human actress. Her character and acting is what made this film, they give her a human soul and a purpose with the writing which is so well done, it gives the audience an emotional journey of a young woman trying to discover who she is.

The love interest side of the film is so done right it doesn't feel forced as well which along with its action sequences as well as it supporting cast was nothing short of perfect. The story does a great job of not revealing too much to earlier as slowly building up characters so you understand the story and draws you into every moment, this is matched by the awesome fight scenes and great formidable villains of the film adding to incredible film.

This is one of those films that deserves a sequel and to be a successful film as of what they've realized here is one of the best live action anime films, with a damn near perfect if it was for slight pacing issue that doesn't really affect the film but is noticeable.

Does it live up to the hype? HELL YES this film live up to the hype this is a must to watch on the big screen hopefully were see a sequel come from it because it so needs it.

Personally this movie for me is a masterpiece visually outstanding they really created a vast imaginative world for this movie. In addition it is a faithful recreation not only of the comics but the manga as well for the most part, for some reason they thought they needed a romantic relationship. I have a sense of relief after years of failed live action manga movies they have finally produced something on par with the cartoon. just a tip watch in 3d it is worth the extra money to see it in this format. Robert Rodriguez who already knows how to bring to life a comic like we saw with Sin City brings a lesson to the Hollywood industry and gives hope that this is the path to go. By the way, James Cameron who respect the original work did a perfect screenplay. The outstanding cast includes big stars Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connely, Mahershala Ali, and the hipnotic Rosa Salazar. Special mention that the CGI effects are so well done that you would not realize what is real or not, especially the big eyes of the protagonist. I get out of the IMAX cinema hyper excited waiting for a continuation, so I create an account to help make justice for the bad critics it didn´t deserve. Battle Angel is the best movie in a long time and a fresh air in the genre. Welcome Alita! Expand

Fight scenes are gloriously over the top as well. No shaky camera or excessive cuts when it comes to fights in Alita: Battle Angel. I always knew what was happening.

The story of Alita: Battle Angel isn't perfect, and does contain a few clichés, but that doesn't hold a movie like this one back. I was too busy leaning forward in my chair with my jaw dropped to put on my critic monocle. Don't listen to the critics for this one. Do yourself a favor and see this movie. It's simply awesome - that's all there is to say.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For the GUNNM fans: trailer nitpicking solved; everything's there, faithful adaptation. OVA Chiren gets a better backstory!
For the Hollywoods: This is an adaptation in its truest sense, since books were first adapted to film; Alita is an abbreviation of only a portion of GUNNM, timeline elements from the source material have been stretched in order for the first movie to introduce the viewers to Motorball, for example- something that is going to be important in the Second chapter of what is an already existing epic, almost three decades old.
I thought this film was excellent. The directorial choice to portray Iron City as colorful, multicultural and bustling during the day is intentional; it expresses Alita's new and exciting world view.. before it's taken down that dark back alley.
Can't wait to see Alita vs. Jashugan.

This movie was great, everything you see on screen is just like the source material, it is very respectful of the Gunnm franchise and make it very realistic.

I saw lot of people complain about the eyes but in my point of view, the eyes of Alita aren't big cause it make them more manga-like. They're big cause in the manga Alita is said to be different from everyone, her physical appareance is unusual and it is retranscribed by the eyes in the movie.

As for the story, I think it's good. It follows the manga and ends where the first part of the manga ends. And for those who says "The movie has sequel confirm end to please the fan, blablabla" well the manga is cut into three parts: Gunnm (the movie is based on this part, and it has 9 volumes), Gunnm Last Order (which has 19 volumes) and Gunnm Mars Chronicles (which has 6 volumes). So yes, the end looks like a sequel bait but it's just follow the first part and ends like it does in the manga so just stop talking nonsense.

For me, it is the first faithful adaptation of a manga into a movie and when I look behind and see crap like Dragon Ball Evolution or Death Note well I'm glad this movie exist.

It is AMAZING and the best ANIME LIVE ACTION movie by far. This movie is full of heart, care and love by their creators and once again James Cameron shows that to make good and strong female characters you don't need SJW and FEMINIST politics. The story is really well done and feels exactly like a old school steam punk anime should. It build this amazing world slowly and with confidence to capture your curiosity. And my curiosity was grabbed in a way i can barely hold on to see a sequel. The movie sets up a sequel well but the ending can work even if a sequel does not get green light, but lets fight to get that sequel as amazing movies like this deserve it. The CGI is probably the best i have seen in a long time, maybe even better than Avatar. The trailers put me in a worried places because of does eyes, but it works, strangely it works and makes it feel more like the anime it is trying to portray. Action is top notch, well choreographed and intense. The soundtrack complements really well the vibe. Actores we brilliant, all of them even if some i would like to have seen more of like 1 of the vilains that i will not spoil. Now for what people criticize more, the love story. Some people like AngryJoe said it ruins the movie, all i can say is they are trying to sound smarter then they are. The love story works for this girl that is innocent with no memory and is learning all this feelings she knows nothing about, it brings a slow character development where she evolves by learning with the hits. Is not perfect but it is well executed enough to feel believable. This movie is far better than the movies this Critics love, Better than the Last Jedi, Better than Black Panther, and i am sure it will be far better than the upcoming Captain Marvel. Don't miss out on this masterpiece, because if it is successful i see a new dawn for anime live action adaptations and i hope James Cameron can take this type of work to other amazing anime like Trigun, Baccano, Evangelion, and so many others. We can dream. Expand

Seeing Alita: Battle Angel sparked an ecstatic sense of hope that finally, moviemaking have caught up, and have done justice to the untapped potential of the expansive and immersive universe which could only could have been experienced through manga and anime from 28 years ago. The core of being young, the simple emotions of unconditional love, innocence lost and idealism thrashed against an invredible contrast to violent and evil gore. You can see that Alita: Battle Angel was created with love, compressing a much longer source content in multiple tankoubons, while managing to retain the majority of visual, emotional and immersive elements of the original work. Even if compressing the movie sacrificed some plotline material, I think the resulting work overall still manages to retain and even improve the original canon, which I'm sure those who have read the original series will appreciate fully. I hope that this will actually even bring a lot of viewers to the original manga, which is not constricted by a pg13 rating. Overall, one of the best imax experience I've had in years, thanks to Cameron, Rodriguez, Kishiro and all of the team that created the movie, congrats on creating a stellar example of how a movie should be made. A decent story. the pace of story telling is a bit rushed because it has enough plot for multiple movies.
It's an adoption from a 30 year-old Japanese Manga which is considered one of the greatest sci-fi / cyberpunk story.
I haven't read the source material, but I still enjoy the movie a lot.

I predicted good effects, this is James Cameron after all, but what I didn't expect were a good story and powerful acting. In the Manga-born world Salem, which is the sky city that everyone aspires to get to after the Fall, pulls you in in a way reminiscent of Star Wars. The casting is perfect and the tech has improved so much that they've avoided the creepy effect entirely, sometimes called the uncanny valley. The CGI tech is both amazing and transparent - you forget that you're watching a processed human within the first few minutes upon her introduction. This is an origin story so has a lot of ground to cover, but does a great job of building what I hope is the first installment of a fresh, original franchise on the big screen. See it today on the biggest screen in your town! Expand

As a fan of Gunnm, the manga, I was really worried about this adaptation... Indeed, I have a huge respect for Gally/ Alita, supposed to be an unapologetic, badass, and a little bit naive heroin (she tries too much to be Human!). And I must admit Robert / James Cameron did an AMAZING adaptation with this. It's not "perfect" (does perfection even exist...?), but Alita Battle Angel is a movie that non-fans can understand and enjoy as well as the fans. Why ? Because they respected the universe of the original, it's long enough to describe the story and it permits Alita to grow in front of our eyes. I had some problems connecting with Yugo (no background story !) but it wasn't huge, and it was to put the spotlight on Alita/ Ido. The world was beautifully made, but felt a bit "lighter", maybe to please a more "mainstream" audience. Blue blood for cyborgs was a good idea ! But don't worry: there still is blood and some hard scenes (or suggested, at least). This movie made Gally even more human than in the manga, I really felt like it was HER. The actress s choice was perfect. The Eyes ? Not as disturbing as everyone was saying...

The relationship between Yugo and Alita was a little cheesy, but hey, don't you ever been a teenager ? It participated in her "humanisation" I would say. The battles were as good as in the manga, with amazing effects (I had to contain myself not to turn crazy everytime Alita would beat the f* out of those pretentious cyborgs!) and not only myself, but everyone was stunned during those moments. I was expecting more battles and a darker aspect of the city but that's it !
I've seen the movie 3 times and I enjoyed every minutes. This movie is the rebirth of a heroin, who, I felt, has always earned to be known by the whole world. For more philosophy, you have to wait for a sequel because Alita is barely remembering her past in the first mangas, and in this movie. The bad reception is totally undeserved. There are plenty of scenes questioning her identity, her more human side, but maybe critics weren't getting it, huh ?

To sum up, Alita is a must-watch if you like SF, Battles, and STORIES. There's also a philosophical question surrounding cyborgs, identity (for those who pay attention), and a strong female lead. Will Alita become the next badass heroin of our decade ? I HOPE SO. (Captain Marvel is probably shaking in her costume. And so is Lara Croft !)

I'm waiting for the next movie - a french fan.

Is this movie a 10? No, I don't give 10 to movies that easily. However, this movie is not a 40-50 either, so I'm giving it a 10 to even the score. This movie it's a solid 7-8. Why? However, this movie is not a 40-50 either, so I'm giving it a 10 to even the score. This movie it's a solid 7-8. Why? It's a blockbuster with soul, with a strong female protagonist you can actually empathize with, it's human, it's weak, it's young, and it's also badass. It's also a movie that tries, it doesn't follow the Marvel formula, it doesn't go the easy way, it tries something different. It's PG-13 but it's violent, it's a popcorn film but it has deep themes behind it (I'd go as far as saying Alita it's the only blockbuster movie that transgender people may feel identified with). It's a pretty great manga adaptation, capturing the essence of the manga, and giving plenty of details and reference for the true fans. The worldbuilding in this is fantastic, the action is visceral. Just like Alita, the film offers you its heart, it's all or nothing with it, but unfortunately, people seem to stomp on it, probably by the same people than then write complains about how Hollywood only makes Remakes, Reboots and Live actions of old animated films. Well, may be that's because each time someone tries something different instead of embracing it and giving it a chance, you discard it and you make fun of it. This movie was terribly judged with double standards. Watch it, it's a fun ride. Expand

I think this movie is the first one in history that realize to transform a masterpiece manga into a masterpiece movie. The 3D is fantastic, even better than Avatar and the development of the main character is perfect. It is a great movie which constantly keeps you entertained and asking for more. Alita is a sweet heart, and the romantic switcharoo of the typical romance dynamic should be a tasteful nod to the feminist army (not that it will please them -It is a great movie which constantly keeps you entertained and asking for more.
