I have to add my two cents as I have never felt such a way about a movie; the most times I have ever seen a movie in a theater was twice, but Alita: Battle Angel, 15 times. It really is just that good. Rosa Salazar's performance is top-tierI have to add my two cents as I have never felt such a way about a movie; the most times I have ever seen a movie in a theater was twice, but Alita: Battle Angel, 15 times. It really is just that good. Rosa Salazar's performance is top-tier amazing (especially considering what she had to wear during filming; check out the behind the scenes videos), the visuals are stunning and the fight scenes are jaw-dropping.

One complaint I see from some people is about the story and the set-up for a sequel. What has to be understood is that James Cameron wanted to stay close to the original manga story that is comprised of 9 books from the early 90's. So, to maintain the integrity of the original manga, there are some parts of the story that cannot be removed, overly modified or simply told over the course of just one movie. With that said, Cameron and Rodriguez completely nailed the attitude and feelings of the original manga. Simply put: there is a reason why Cameron chose to tell Alita's story and it is absolutely fantastic.

If you like action, a strong and likable main heroine, amazing visuals and a great story, this is your movie. If I'm not convincing, go watch any, or all, of the hundreds of audience review videos out there and you won't regret diving into the world of Alita: Battle Angel.… Expand

I simply adore this movie. The effects are gorgeous. Rosa Salazar and Christoph Waltz's acting has to be seen to be believed. Don't know how they did it, but an almost shot for shot recreation of the only OK anime is so much more compelling than the original. They injected enough new content for me to really want to see the sequel. They injected enough new content for me to really want to see the sequel. With the exception of Hugo, I really loved the characters. Alita's uncanny valley issues aside (mouth more than the eyes), she came across as very human with complex emotions. Christopher Waltz as Ido was the perfect casting choice, he nailed the roll and his natural features are close enough to the original character though I fully bought into him as Dr Ido.

TLDR: Good cast, good/strong characters (except Hugo), true to the source material and makes me want more.… Expand

I took my daughter to see Alita in theaters, it was so much better then I thought. Afterward I couldn’t figure out why the poor reviews but now seeing that it has a high rating from the general public makes sense. I typically don't enjoy movies like this but I love it! Disney if you don't produce a sequel you may as well consider your path the same as your first two attempts at Star Wars. Goodluck… Expand

Great fun. Great special effects and story. The "sports scenes" are just a bit over the top but you start to care about Alita by the end and the story is simple but engaging. If you like Roller Ball, Blade Runner or Anime you'll love it. I did.

Amazing Movie!!!! I went and purchased the blu-ray and i dont even own a blu-ray player. This movie is something so different from all the super hero movies we have been getting. This movie needs more than one views and it matures like wine with each one. It's first manga adaptation made by hollywood that really works. It has soul. Besides I love cyberpunk and there is always need for more good CP movies.

Simply, this is a film that comes along very infrequently: merging meaning and medium perfectly, while advancing a craft that is too often mimicked but seldom defined. The first mercurial statement: meaning and medium--this is a futurist film that welds relatable characters with an advance of the very element which best, visually, defines that future. This film accomplishes that feat in the same way that Terminator 1 and 2 did. Recall, if you can, your youthful memory of those films and remember the feelings you had. I had the same ones in this film. The second statement: CG art is a difficult medium to excel at--this is best known by those that have tried. I have made strides to progress in this arena for the twin enjoyment of both art and technology. Those that participated in this exemplar of the art have achieved something few ever will: a defining example, a unique and enduring entry into the craft of this sort. Sure, there are some implausibility issues that critics are citing (and the film borrows story element from a number of other sci-fi sagas we’ve seen), but the characters of Alita and her love interest Hugo are entirely believable and compelling. And Christophe Waltz is fantastic. Ali and Connelly have smaller parts, but they’re terrific. I was concerned, after seeing the trailer, that the bulk of the “good vs. evil” action would be confined to the MotorBall arena, but it’s not the case. There are some amazing set pieces in this movie. The film’s action sequences and its visuals are absolutely fantastic. It doesn’t have a heavy “artificial” CGI feel to it at all. And at least in my theater, the 3D experience was better-than-perfect (I typically loathe 3D) – the screen didn’t look “grey” or “dim” like it does with most 3D movies. It was entirely bright and all the colors popped. I can’t imagine this film not doing extremely well with a younger audience, and I absolutely want more of this story.… Expand

Alita: Battle Angel is a butt-kicking spectacle of sheer goodness. I have absolutely no idea why some critics are rating it badly. The art direction is stupendous and the movie is both technologically impeccable and full of heart.

Apparently, some critics have an issue with the fact that the movie serves as an introduction to Alita and doesn't conclude the story but rather acts as a first chapter, but what the hell do they expect? The manga went on for a lot more than the first few issues that the movie covers, and if they wanted everything compressed into one movie, then they're impatient and unappreciative.

Watch the thing.

I'm guessing Alitas body was designed with all the necessary parts. To be honest, I wouldn't say no to her either, especially if I needed protection from saber weilding cyborgs. It's funny how how he just can't wait to get some of that artifical booty. She has a slight CGI look too that clearly drives him wild. Ever want to see Christopher waltz wielding a huge war hammer? I didn't think I did, until I saw it. It's just a very entertaining and watchable film, with some of the best action sequences I've ever seen. The story is pretty decent, the acting fine. The dialogue is a bit silly in parts but still entertaining.… Expand

I was expecting the roller ball bits too be too long and to make the movie drag but they are kept short and fit the story perfectly. A simple sum up of Alita.... AMAZING VISUAL and 3D, an action story with enough meat to it that you had to think a little (not War and Piece but not Mighty Morphing Power Rangers either), acting was good all around, good villains and characters. The only downside I really saw was the ended for me felt like a "hey lets end it here and hope we get to do a 2nd one" and had no real closure or finality. Don't listen to the critics do yourself a favour and go see this movie.… Expand

Yet, many times it is indeed the case, especially with ALITA, which they slammed. What the critics did not get was the fact that Rodriguez and Cameron are making a 'live action ANIME'. The so called disjointed plot? If you read the manga, then it is a distillation of the so called episodic nature of the original work. Critics slammed something that they don't understand. They refer to Marvel flicks as accurate yet when Alita stays true to its original manga, they said differently. Suffice to say, Alita is spell bounding, with breathtaking effects that made you believe that an anime style character is alive and breathing. Kudos for Rosa Salazar for bring her A game here as the main character. This is also Rodriguez's best work in his career. Working with the great James Cameron does great wonders to his usual 'style'. Again, see this on the biggest screen possible. It is worth that extra ticket price.… Expand

A visual spectacle worth watching in Imax or 3D, Alita delivers a tight, interesting story in a vast world. Cyberpunk elements abound in as the story rests on the actions and existence of imperfect characters rather than contrived conflicts.

It's really no wonder the usual film critics don't get the movie. As an adaptation of a Manga, it doesn't wear its philosophy on its sleeve, doesn't plaster its message over every surface. And it uses larger than life characters while stillIt's really no wonder the usual film critics don't get the movie. As an adaptation of a Manga, it doesn't wear its philosophy on its sleeve, doesn't plaster its message over every surface. And it uses larger than life characters while still making everything seem down to earth - in a science fiction movie. It just doesn't fit the mold.

It is a beautiful movie, in visuals, plot and emotion, and as a fan of the Manga I thoroughly approve. The only reason I can't give a 10 is that it still feels a little crammed...although Rodriguez did a great job keeping everything clean and simple in a movie chock full of moments. Even then I know where they were coming from. There really isn't anything you could take away without seriously detracting from the story, the worldbuilding or the characters. I get why they whittled down the Makaku arch (which is a pity, but it alone wouldn't fill a movie and would feel too Marvel-like - they honor the missing character by not calling his stand-in big bad non-character Makaku) and so they needed to get somewhere with the movie, maxing out the acceptable runtime and filling it up to the notch - but in a (mostly) good way! Another little issue is that they made some changes that cranked up the heroic aspects of Alita (and, especially, her old self).
The changes to the Manga mostly don't hurt and are usually understandable. Some even showed me that "streamlining" can be a good thing. What they did with the berserker backstory makes a lot of sense and plays up the uncomfortable aspects of the main character.

Talking about eerieness: Not that they needed it (the visuals are gorgeous!), but this is the first movie where the uncanny valley effect was used to help a movie, instead of unintentionally hindering it. Alita's huge eyes make her seem somewhat alien, but endearing, but the other cyborg characters often seem jarring, especially Zapan and one of the cyborgs in the ambush early on, which fits the movie perfectly! After all, it is (among other things) a movie about how technology interacts with people - how we use it to miraculous effect and for petty monstrosities alike. No one could embody that better than Desty Nova, who remains elusive throughout the movie, as well he should. I hope we'll see more of him, and that Edwart Norton will do him justice in a second movie!… Expand

Das Effektgewitter in „Alita: Battle Angel“ ist – wie auch der Körper des Kriegerengels – letztendlich nur eine Hülle. Stattdessen kommt es vielmehr darauf an, das Herz am rechten Fleck zu haben — und das hat die Manga-Verfilmung ebenso wie ihre Titelheldin.

Viel für's Auge, bisschen was für's Herz und nette Aktioneinlagen. Tolle Schauspieler, bin gespannt ob's einen zweiten Teil geben wird.

My only complaint is about Hugo, he starts ok but at some point start making no sense, he felt superficial at times, without the more deep motivations of the source material.
In any case, it was a great action movie and an excellent time.
My wife knew nothing about the manga/anime and loved the movie, because it was beautiful and fun.… Expand

But it's a tiny complaint when that's all I can come up with.

I absolutely loved this movie! Crossing my fingers for the very obviously set up sequel.

The style of the world they built reminded me at times of Blade Runner, but only as dark still shots. The pace of the world is a lot faster in Alita - when it needs to be.
You really root for Alita - she's a character you feel for. I think most people can relate to her in some way. Feeling excited but lost at the same time. It's an interesting take on the "I forgot everything about my past" trope. And I love that they feed it to the viewer in bits. Not just her remembering who she is. Also literally her physical appearance throughout the movie. It was like playing a video game where you upgrade your skills and items - but as a movie. Worked well if you ask me.… Expand
