Definitely a thinkers game. And it's something we don't have a whole lot of these days.
-
If more work had been put into balancing the combat portion of the game Wrath Unleashed would have received almost a full point higher score for being a complete title.
-
A pretty solid game with only one major downside: load times.
-
One part strategy, one part fighting, with a tasty dressing of polished design. Ageing PC enthusiasts have seen similar in Arcon Ultra and similar games, but for everyone else Wrath Unleashed is an envigoratingly fresh title with a unique look and epic feel.
-
Wrath's only problems are small but important: Loading unfortunately breaks up the game's pacing, the fighting engine could be deeper, and there's no online mode. [Feb 2004, p.90]
-
Cheat Code CentralDon't lose your patience with this game, otherwise you'll be missing out on some good, old-fashioned, nerd-approved fun.
-
While I can think of plenty of minor tweaks and improvements that would make this game even better, as is, Wrath Unleashed is a bold and innovative concept that will delight both strategy and action gamers who enjoy challenging gameplay, fantasy creatures, spells, and sexy goddesses.
-
The turn-based strategy offers quite a bit of challenge but the fighting should be just right, with just enough different characters to keep you going.
-
A solid title. The AI can sometimes be frustratingly stubborn, and the battles can take a long, long time to complete, but there's plenty to like here.
-
Its aspects of action, while moderately engaging, are wholly unbalanced; in addition, the elements of strategy are watered-down for ease of play. Nevertheless, Wrath Unleashed plays much better as a multiplayer game.
-
Id give this a strong rent/weak buy suggestion if youre just out for single player, but its one to pick up if you have fantasy n fightin lovin friends.
-
Both demanding and highly enjoyable at the same time, thus making this a love-it-or-hate-it type of game.
-
The strategy is intricate, the creatures are totally awesome, but some sketchy execution on the combat side of thigs keeps Wrath Unleashed from oattaining immortality. [Feb 2004, p.108]
-
The concept and the creatures, not to mention the turn-based gameplay couldve infused the strategy genre with a shot of adrenaline that it sorely needed.
-
While you might not complete Wrath Unleashed in a weekend, it's possible that it won't hold your attention for too much longer. Although Wrath does what it does very well, it suffers from a lack of ambition.
-
The only problem is that LucasArts didnt take the ultimate risk and create strictly a strategy game, because the fighting aspects sink this game faster than an ogre mage in quicksand.
-
The game's not ideal on every level, but it's good enough on all of them so that it should provide an entertaining experience and a decent amount of replay value for those who enjoy equal parts methodical strategy and button-mashing mayhem.
-
Xbox Live support would have made this a must-buy, but it's still worht the money if you have friends to share it with. [Mar 2004, p.94]
-
Official Xbox MagazineWhat's in the game is pretty compelling for the right type of gamer who knows exactly what they're in for and has buddies well versed in the same type of gameplay. Too bad, because with a little Live play this could've been a contenda. [Feb 2004, p.74]
-
The game's main "problem" is that it badly needs four players. I say "problem" because that's only a problem if you don't have three friends to play with.
-
Each game also consists of doing the same thing over and over again, and while this provides the perfect even playing field when skirmishing with a friend, it gets monotonous alone.
-
As a multiplayer game, Wrath Unleashed proves to be a solid title, but as a single-player experience it proves to be entirely too short. If you are looking for a mix of the strategy and fighting genres, then give Wrath Unleashed at least a rental.
-
TotalGames.netIt may look a little basic and the style does bear more in common with the mid-eighties mistakes in taste that the game's inspiration can be dated from, but give it a chance and Wrath Unleashed becomes very playable; proving old ideas need not die with bad fashion sense.
-
Really tends to disappoint when it comes to replay value. I expect strategy games to at least last 20 hours or so, but the multiple campaigns, single player maps and multiplayer gameplay will have a tough time reaching that magic number.
-
If either half of Wrath Unleashed had been more fully formed, the game would have been easy to recommend, but as it stands, half a fighting game and half a strategy game does not make a whole game. [Mar 2004, p.64]
-
Sloppy combat controls hamper the fun, and the lack of online play really limits the multiplayer appeal on the Xbox. Just the same, it's a great-looking, enjoyable take on a classic.
-
The game has a tendency to drag on, and it doesn't take long to realize that all four teams are almost identical.
-
It fuses a boring turn-based strategy game with a lackluster one-on-one fighter...In short, two half-assed components combine to make...well, you do the math. [March 2004, p.114]
-
PlayboyCurvy goddesses and armies of flaming unicorns make this strategy game feel like something between "Risk" and a "Spinal Tap" concert. [Mar 2004, p.39]
-
netjakWith the right mix of people, this might be a decent multiplayer game, but playing against the computer in random battles gets old quickly, and the campaign doesnt provide enough depth or challenge to make Wrath Unleashed appropriate for more than a rental.
-
Ultimately, Wrath Unleasheds biggest problem is that it sticks too firmly to concepts that were fresh twenty years ago, a mediocre strategy game and a mediocre fighting game wrapped up in one mediocre package.
-
What I find most surprising about the game is the distinct lack of replay value.
