  1. There is just so much original thinking that went into this design, and it really forces you to strategize and play in whole new ways. Each encounter in the game is a new chance to plan some crafty tactics or just go in guns blazing. Rogue Trooper is a fantastic action experience and gets my highest recommendation for being added to your permanent game library.

This is solidly built, quality gaming, made by a team that's put a lot of care into adapting the license. [June 2006, p.62]

It's amazing when you sit down with a game that you had the lowest of expectations for, only to find an incredibly well put together experience.

While it doesn't innovate in any one particular area, it keeps the action fresh by giving the player a ton of flexibility.
  5. It's a decent adventure game that has some really interesting ideas on gameplay. It may be a tad too short, but there is some fun to be had while playing.
  6. Another impressive example of Rogue Trooper's AI is clearly and believably evident in the fact that very seldom can the player pull off a long range sniper shot without being shot at in turn.
  7. Rogue Trooper has some brilliance behind it. The game is exciting, fun to play, and it encourages multiple ways of taking out your enemies.
  8. The abilities of your comrades adds a level of depth often missing from games of this nature and with a little experimentation can be quite rewarding.
  9. It's a third-person shooter with smooth, detailed graphics, and a learning curve set so beautifully that even non- shooter fans should love it.
  10. Just sort of middle-of-the-road when it comes to 3rd person shooters. The main reason is the cookie-cutter AI that seems to sort of makes the game a little too easy to play.
  11. An excellent, fast paced shooter but because it launched so late in the life of the current-gen consoles, it is more likely that gamers will pick up a new 360 game or save for future PS3/Wii fare.
  12. If you're looking for a very good co-op game, or a well developed single player campaign with few issues, then Rogue Trooper would be a perfect choice.
  13. Rogue Trooper doesn't approach the inventiveness of a great budget TPS like last year's "Raze's Hell," but it's priced to move.
  14. An enjoyable action title for those of us who have yet to jump on the 360 bandwagon.
  15. The story, the graphics, and the audio are all there and really not that bad but, they just can't stand up to the very impressive gameplay.
  16. While the game isn't ground breaking with any new technologies, the flexibility of the game play will keep you interested.

The co-op gameplay is a nice touch, but not enough to overcome the bland graphics and familiarity that permeates every second of gameplay. [June 2006, p.112]

Rogue Trooper, I thank you for the important lesson you've taught me about judging a game by its cover art: That's now onlt accurate 99% of the time. [June 2006, p.111]
  19. Rogue Trooper may not be cutting edge, but as a simple, straightforward shooter, it's more than capable of delivering a quick action fix.

This thirdperson actioner spikes the familiar with flavour, and a tired but reliable vocabulary of wall-hugs, circle-strafe, grenade lobs and headshots with an invigorating Nu-Earth twang. [June 2006, p.94]

There is something oddly reassuring about a game that keeps its horizons narrow to get the job done well... A fun, smart and refreshingly uncomplicated experience. [June 2006, p.112]

The graphics are functional when it comes to the large playing areas but exemplary when it comes to the rather bone-crunching despatching of the opposition.
  23. A strong sense of style that stays close to the source material, Rogue Trooper isn't just one for the fans however; an intensive and sometimes intelligent shooter, Rogue Trooper is certainly one that could interest you if you're looking for a shooter that's a little bit different to the usual.

Warts and all, Rogue Trooper's a perfectly decent rip, and as comic-book tie-ins go, it's better than most. [July 2006, p.82]

A decent enough shooter, with good weapons and a decent cover system - but only fans of the comic will get the most from it. [June 2006, p.78]
  26. For a budget title, things could certainly be a whole lot worse. It's worth a rental at the least, and if you can find some online play then you might just want to consider purchasing it. It's fun, challenging, captivating, diverse – and cheap.
  27. In the end, Rogue Trooper is a technically solid game. It's intuitive, looks and plays great…but it's really not all that compelling.
  28. Rogue Trooper is at times a very exciting and enjoyable shooter, which makes it all the more disappointing that it's over so soon.
  29. In a climate of next-gen gaming, Rogue Trooper comes across as an anachronistic ode to the Xbox third person shooter. Not exactly rough around the edges but then not entirely polished either, it's a game best suited for either rabid fans of the comic upon which it is based or those who simply must experience every game out there that lets you play with big guns.

A decent-enough third-person shooter, then, rendered considerably more appealing if an admirer of the strip. If so, the score below can safely have a [+10] Fanboy Modifier (to hit) applied to it.
  31. The best thing you can say about Rogue Trooper is that (despite some clunky control decisions) is almost always good fun. Thanks to well-paced design you'll certainly never feel like downing the pad in abject frustration, or out of plain boredom: it's the gaming equivalent of popcorn sci-fi action movie fodder.

Elements such as stealth and stealth kills, blind firing, and the employment of cover in firefights add little to Trooper's mystique; they won't be used much as they slow down the pace to an almost unbearable crawl. [May 2006, p.53]
  33. 60
All told, unless you've got a special place in your heart for this white-eyed, blue-skinned, four-in-one sci-fi warrior, you'll come away with an experience you'll likely forget within a few days -- and a newfound appreciation for the better shooters.
  34. 60
The brevity and ease of its single-player campaign and the lack of substance in its multiplayer combine to make for a relatively unsatisfying experience.
  35. Where Rogue Trooper rescues itself from mediocrity, however, is in the way it utilises Gunnar, Helm and Bagman. They all perk up with humorous quips and helpful advice, while the futuristic gadgetry is inventive.
  36. 50
Rogue Trooper tries to be a competant third-person action game with attitude, but it ultimately fails. [June 2006, p.74]
  37. Feels more like basic training than hard-core warfare.

I had a hard time deciding if this game is a 7/10, a very enjoyable game or an 8/10, the start of where I place must play or own games. After a lot of consideration I put it at 8/10. The first thing is it's a very fun game and well designed with no bugs. It has a variety of ways to play the game and it gives you the ability to constantly pick your gear at hand during the game. You can play all out gunning, you can snipe and you can stealth it although it's not a strong game in that respect. Still, it allows different strategies and always gives a choice to the player. The game has, in my opinion, missions just the right length and the gameplay can be played fairly open for a linear game. You also have the ability to double back to areas within a mission. The graphics may have been dull at release however with my component cables I'm pretty pleased and the sound seems reasonable. There is a bit of spoon feeding to learn to play I found the tutorial proceeding up to the 3rd of 13 total missions, which if you check reviews here most players feel the controls were intuitive, and this is likely the reason why. I really thought the way they handled ammo in this game made the game. Not too much, not limiting either, but always making the player decide in the moment how to go about things without locking you into a regretful upgrade choice. Many players say this game is too short, and perhaps it is, but it is short and sweet enough to try a different strategy for each area next game, or maybe just try a higher difficulty. I didn't find any reason to think I didn't get fair value for the cost of the game. My only gripe with the game is that I actually felt the controls could have been better (I slightly disagree with other players). At times I felt annoyed and frustrated that you could only toggle either weapons or grenades and not both at the same time more effectively. Same with being in zoom it would have been handy to have an automatic loss of zoom while you chose the need to reload or change loadouts. This however is not gamebreaking but I think one area that could have been improved. That said this game was made 2006 and for that time period this game goes way above average and is in my must keep pile, and the reason I gave an 8/10 score. It just begs me to play it again even despite its age and how many fantastic games are on the market. One other thing is that this game in many respect seems like it was a game borderlands may have been inspired by, or made by some of the same designers. It's cartooned, gives a lot of variety and if I'm not mistaken, isn't that claptraps voice in there too?... Full Review »
