Apr 4, 2024The fact that Unicorn Overlord is both accessible to new players of the tactical genre while still managing to please the most experienced and demanding fans of the genre through its complex and extensive customisation of strategies and units is an achievement. With five regions to explore, more than 60 characters to unlock and 7 or 8 dozen hours of gameplay, the it's only real problem is the emptiness it leaves behind once you've finished it.

Vanillaware's new SRPG has adopted a refined and complex combat system which, although satisfying and engaging, may not suit all tastes, due to too many automatic mechanisms and the excessive micromanagement required. Characterized by the unmistakable style that distinguishes the productions of the Japanese team, Unicorn Overlord has nevertheless revealed itself to be a multi-faceted and ambitious strategy game, underlining once again the unparalleled creative flair of Vanillaware. If the overly classic story and totally automated battles don't scare you, make it yours and let yourself be enchanted by the magic of Fevrith.
