Oct 16, 2023Trepang2 may well surprise. Brilliant gameplay mechanics come to the fore, allowing the overall experience to be a lot of fun. The B-movie storyline is generic but it is still done with plenty of commitment and pace that you can forgive its melodrama. Away from that and the action is relentless, whilst slo-mo has never felt so good.

Oct 24, 2023Trepang2 is a title that tries to recapture the magic of the classic F.E.A.R. franchise, managing to mimic certain aspects well, even improving upon them, while also failing to do so in others. The action-packed gameplay is mighty spectacular and incredibly satisfying when fighting against other soldiers, much less so when it’s against generic zombie-like enemies, flying mobs, or bullet sponge bosses, whose mechanics very much negate the perks of the shooting mechanics themselves. Likewise, the game’s execution of a horror mystery is a bit weak, especially compared to the great original F.E.A.R. game, with a very basic execution of horror tropes and no interesting characters to speak of. Yet, with some of the most satisfying shooting on the market and a surprising amount of customization and cheat codes, Trepang2 is still worth a shot, whether you’re a fan of the franchise it’s inspired by or just a fan of exciting first-person shooters.

Oct 2, 2023When Trepang2 is at its most gory it is a claret-drenched delight. Its attempts to delve into horror are less good.

Oct 19, 2023Despite its shortcomings Trepang2 could be the perfect option for those who long for frentic FPS games and lots of gore.
-
Sep 29, 2023Drawing inspiration from the dreary aesthetics of mid-2000s shooters and 2005’s F.E.A.R. in particular, Trepang2 sits at the blissful intersection of the very silly and the very serious.

Jan 2, 2024It may sound like I’m focusing on the negatives too much here, but much of what I enjoyed about Trepang2‘s premise was ultimately undercut by its various weaknesses. What initially seems like a promising concoction of bloody firefights, psychic superpowers and absolute bedlam suffers from poor pacing, muddled direction, odd enemy AI and controls that are more suited to a mouse and keyboard than a controller. When it works as intended brief flashes of brilliance are tucked away in the combat, when taken as a whole it winds up being a fairly middling experience.
