The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is a classic, accessible, and highly enjoyable action RPG that pleases players with its pacing rather than with revolutionary mechanics. Despite some repetitive elements across its eras and some forgettable characters, its relaxed loop, outstanding art direction, and evocative soundtrack make for a solid and engaging, nostalgia-filled 16-bit era adventure.

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales certainly lives up to its name, offering an enchanting interlude—reminiscent of the finest fairy tales—amidst the myriad titles released this year. Once again, Square Enix proves it has a gold mine in the HD-2D style, an art direction that stands as one of the most influential creations of recent years. Here, the ever-helpful Elliot takes center stage in an adventure that is both classic and nostalgic, yet above all, remarkably executed and told. Certain moments truly stand out, thanks primarily to the high quality of the writing—whether in the main storyline or the side quests. This is precisely where the Square Enix title might surprise and move you, just as it did me, from start to finish.

The Adventures of Elliot is a great progression of the 2D-HD style. It brings a new genre into the mix with solid results. There are things here I would definitely change, the excessive dialogue being at the top of that list, but for a first effort, it stands out. If you are like me and craving that Zelda-style adventure, this is definitely worth a look.

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales doesn't quite reach the heights of other recent Square Enix games. It has great level design, but too much repetition from traveling back and forth between nearly identical versions of the same map.

In light of the references cited – or at least suggested – The Adventures of Elliot ultimately has nothing to be ashamed of. Admittedly, it is stuck in a conventional past (repetitive, conventional and with writing that falls short of other titles developed by the Asano team), but once these criticisms set apart, the game speaks for itself. This Zelda-like title turns out to be a luminous tale with polished gameplay mechanics, moments of brilliance and high-quality art direction. For a new audience discovering the action-RPG genre – and who, in a sense, aren’t ‘tainted’ by unrealistic expectations – it’s a solid choice. The studio has just laid the foundation for a potential future in the action-RPG genre, provided they make the necessary changes down the line.
