Swordship is a fun arcade experience with a rogue-lite twist. Furthermore, the fast-paced action and challenging experience will keep you busy for hours. However, the repetitive and brutal gameplay can sadly become frustrating.

While I’d argue the $25.99 CAD price tag is a bit steep for how little content there is, the gameplay is quite original, as I would have never thought about playing a shmup that has no shooting. Lacking some sort of online leaderboard or modes does bring in the monotony and repetitiveness quite quickly, as I was only able to sit and play a few runs at a time before getting the itch to move onto something else for a break.

There’s a killer idea at the core of Swordship, and so much presentational care has been put into supporting it. What would happen if you ‘pulled a Mirror’s Edge’ and made a shooter completely pacifist? The result would be Swordship, a dodge ’em up that’s overloaded with potential. In execution, though, it slowly capsizes.

Swordship is fun in very short bursts but it soon begins to get too repetitive for my tastes.
