So sad to wait this many years for a lifeless game. The load screens ruin everything. The planets are just boring majority of the time.

Incredible game. I have never been a Bethesda guy. Tried two of their bigger titles to include Skyrim and Oblivion. I thought they were cool but not in my personal interest. With Starfield, I gave it a shot because I love space themed games such as Deliver Us the Moon. I have been hooked since and I can't get enough of it. Looking forward to this franchise.

Ground combat is Fallout 4 but slightly less clunky. Space combat feels like a series of unwieldy boxes whirling around above a planet, about as fast paced and exciting as helping an old lady across the street. Any kind of space flight besides this is nonexistent, space exploration consists of loading screens and takeoff/landing cinematics. The other part of space exploration is running on foot thousands of meters across a fishbowl map on a generic planet or barren moon, to find the same copy/pasted outpost you discovered on the first moon you visited, with all the same items and npc's in the same exact places. Outpost building is an absolute joke. You would think it would be good, being the third iteration of Bethesda's building system, but in SPACE. It's not, it's 4 prefab structures, 2 landing pads (1 of which doesn't work) and a bunch of large stuff you have to build on the ground outside because there's no nice foundations to build and build on and they don't fit in the very generic premade hab shapes they give you. Followers are uninspired and forgettable and dialogue is limited to Good or Edgy. The only real effect of this dialogue is getting your boring pack animal companion to complain at you for not being enough of a Lawful Good Paladin type. The background and character building is vapid and thin, with my outlaw Professor being universally recognized for having briefly worked on a mining crew at the beginning of the game before getting railroaded into the main quest, or rather, the main series of identical fetch quests that lead you to the lazily written and plainly uninspired conclusion of the very forgettable main story. I paid a hundred bucks to get this in Early Access in spite of having Game Pass because I believed in the strength of the games Bethesda used to make, but the only memorable thing about this game is that I had to play well past the refund time to get the full scope of how bad this Triple-A blockbuster game turned out to be. I fear for the disaster that Elder Scrolls 6 is likely to be, and Bethesda has finally lost me entirely. After many games and thousands of cumulative hours, I won't day one or early access anything from them anymore because they can't be trusted. Expand

Modders, however, are not here to do all your work, and it's high time to release polished games instead of barely concealed open betas.

This game had so much potential and was hyped up for so long only to deliver the worst Bethesda experience so far. Fallout 3 or Skyrim are still more worth your time in 2023.

I'm really disappointed, I've been waiting for this match for a long time and now it's a cold shower.

    Let me explain:

I was expecting an innovative game. This is what Bethesda was selling us as an argument. They also sold the game to us by telling us "The planets will be explorable in their entirety".

But that's not the case, we're on Fallout 4, in space, with a procedural generation similar to that of No Man's Sky, AND THE BIG BLACK POINT (for me anyway): we can't land freely on a planet, nor take atmospheric flight or travel in a vehicle on the surface of a planet. WHICH MEANS THAT EXPLORATION (which they sold us!) ONLY EXISTS DURING LOADING TIMES!!

The game is completely empty (well no, it's filled with "space pirates" everywhere outside of cities), and if you've ever played Fallout 4 you'll understand that the game is exactly a carbon copy, but in space with procedural generation (and less well)...

The story is sloppy as possible, we find ourselves propelled into the adventure with a simple snap of the fingers (and it's called "RPG"), I'm not going to spoiler but it's really not a credible story. And apart from the story, most of the NPCs you come across will have a small side quest to allow you to negotiate with a particular person, or look for an object,... in short, Fallout 4 (procedural) and no surprises.

Moreover, the "negotiations" are generally totally false and this inevitably leads to a fight.

Procedural generation obviously only serves to make us stay on GamePass with a myriad of bogus quests and pirates in every corner of the map.

Bethesda, you made a terrible mistake in getting bought by Microsoft.

The graphics look good for what we expect in 2023 but I have read reviewers speak gospel on these textures, and to be frank I have got the game cranked to the max and it's not breathtaking, It's just nice, the lip sync on dialogue can be spot on, or resemble a dubbed anime with the lips failing to match.

Exploration, this is just a boring walk across a ProcGen planet outside of the main hub planets, once you've been to one, you've pretty much seen it all.

Weapons and combat, this lacks any real "meat" to it, enemies are utterly braindead and will stand in the open letting you slot them over and over, when they're not glitching on boxes and loose terrain objects.

Space Combat is a complete farce, not so much dogfighting as it is either instakilled by higher leveled AI ships or it's a slaughter once you unlock Class C ships.

I frankly cannot recommend this game, even if you love Fallout or Skyrims offerings, because this offers nothing new.

But at the moment it is dull. And certain things don't make much sense. Like in the future we lost the ability to utilise any maps within civilisation centres that tell us where vendors are located etc. The spaceship is nothing but an extended inventory, you don't really fly it ... you just move it from point A to point B on a starmap. There is the illusion of flying, by moving it around the atmosphere of a planet, with a smattering of chanky space combat.

Where the game struggles I think is lore ... I have no feeling for it at all. Elder Scrolls/Fallout they crafted a world. Starfield - I don't get any world building sense. Yeah there are things that mark it as a Bethesda game, turrets, consoles, lock picking, inventory management, perks, bugs etc. But I don't care about the lore - everything is so generic. My initial feeling was it played like just any other space game, a lot of other space games have done it a lot better.

Generally just don't believe the hype with this one, it is boring. There is no 'wow' factor to the game, that blows your socks off. It is just grind and while grind in itself is not too bad if you have a captivating story or interesting characters, this game lacks on both scores.

Overall has some potential, imagine once PC modders get into it and start showing Bethesda what is actually possible. Then Bethesda take those ideas and filter them into the game over time. Starfield will end up a reasonable game. But at the minute it is seriously lacking something, and all I can think is there isn't much lore or anything.

I've been a massive Bethesda fan since Daggerfall. The game that actually managed to somehow handle this better even with all it's issues. Where Daggerfall committed to the simulation Starfield stifles you at every turn, taking bad habits learned from Oblivion onwards with more unkillable NPC's then I've ever seen. Your freedom is stifled, replaced with false 'roleplaying' choices based on your background that never actually change much of anything beyond the tone of conversations. Your actions don't matter. You words barely matter.

With Ken Rolston and Michael Kirkbride both gone Bethesda's worldbuilding backbone is completely broken and it shows in Starfield more than any other game. Even Elder Scrolls Online had Lawrence Schick to help guide the helm. Starfield DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A GAME DESIGN DOCUMENT to it's name, this is something Emile Pagliarulo himself admits and it SHOWS god damn. Not just in narrative and world building but in the inconsistent visuals, overly cluttered environments and quite frankly Schizophrenic (Todd's words) presentation.

HARD AVOID this game. If you're still curious for the love of god just play it on Gamepass.

I wanted to love this game, I love space exploration as a concept, I love RPGs and the kind of "firm" Science Fiction tone this game uses (similar to Mass Effect). Problem is this game experience is frustrating to say the least.

Exploration is tedious because Starfield's universe is largely empty, especially when you deviate "off the beaten path." This was really surprising given Betheda's history and their famous touting of their worlds, I was expecting a game where venturing off the paths of quests would be like FO4 or Skyrim, where I stumble onto some side content that pulls me in and I look back two hours later and say: "Wait, I was doing a quest!" To be very clear: Starfield DOES NOT give you this experience in the least. Many of the worlds in Starfield are largely empty and offer few NPCs or locations to interact with.

The gameplay feels dated as well, not outright bad, more like they just took FO4, stapled on some 2016 No Man's Sky, and applied a new coat of paint. Ground combat is very stale, largely due to a combination of bad AI, bullet-sponge enemies, and that most guns have really toned down sounds... Then there is space combat. The ship and base-building mechanics are much improved from their FO4 roots, clearly this is where Bethesda spent A LOT of time, and it shows. I can say I was very pleased with what I could do with my ship after awhile and there are many options in regards to constructing your base/home. That being said, combat in space is just very poorly balanced because you have the same "bullet sponge" issues from ground combat, but the added difficulty of lacking cover. This places a lot of onus on the player making sure you are upgrading your ship, particularly on higher difficulties, and causes this heavy emphasis on resource gathering, hence the NMS comparison.

Then there are the bugs. I expected them given its a Bethesda game, but this... It isn't as bad as FO76, but it also feels like Bethesda just haven't learned anything in the last 15 years. I can't tell you how many times I had companions or enemies stuck on level geometry that would either impede my progress, and more than a few times it required me to re-load and hope I didn't end up with an enemy shooting me from behind a wall or above the ceiling where I couldn't shoot back or end up with a companion preventing me from moving into a room with the quest objective. I had crashes, I had physics and texture bugs, I had objectives fail to properly complete requiring reloads.

I compared this game to 2016 No Man's Sky earlier, and I really think that is what Starfield is: 2016 No Man's Sky with a Bethesda RPG skin. It has the same lifeless universe NMS did in 2016, the same mechanical issues with the world, which I assume are driven by lazy use of procedural generation, and many of the same problems with the gameplay loop. If you're willing to grind it out for the sake of the RPG mechanics and ship-building, the two lone bright spots of this title, then more power to you. Personally, I found this game tedious to play and unrewarding to explore.

Starfield is extremely disappointing through the lens of Bethesda's past history, as it's massive regressions and streamlining of the Bethesda design philosophy makes it feel a lot more empty in a lot of regards. Stuff like the loss of AI Schedules, looting changes on both NPC's and general "clutter", a terrible map for the surrounding area/city, the overall reliance on fast travel due to the way traveling and the instances work, space being a buffer instance where there's a small chance of something happening, but it's just there to get a view of the planet before you land on it, sandwiched between 2 loading cutscenes. (Biggest gripe, world feels so broken up and even on planets extremely empty.). A ton of the Bethesda "staples" are cut down to such a degree that it's hard for that level of immersion to "click" in the same way their games have since Morrowind to around Fallout 4. The very basic looting and equipping (We have now fully regressed into having a grand total of 3 equipment slots for armor with 2 additional slots for clothing.) The armor models comes in 2 different sets repainted, and guns are a weird step in a different direction from Fallout 4's customization, as there is much less of a reliance on it here. It's a weird mix of what feels like a blend of laziness, streamlining, or even rushing that I can't quite put my finger on for a lot of these sorely implemented features.

It's both little and big things that make me sad seeing one of my favorite developers streamline their games from tremendous RPG adventures, to instanced mindless looter shooters.

The game is fun despite all this. It has a lot of strengths, keeping at least a large chunk of the Bethesda charm in the jank that stems from the engine. Combat is the best feeling it's ever been. The soundtrack is absolutely outstanding and captures the world completely. Spaceship building is a blast. The new persuasion system is a massive win. The story and side content has been fun, but suffers from the very basic writing Bethesda suffers from.

Overall, It's in a weird place where I really can't recommend it unless you were a massive fan of Fallout 4 and want more of it, or just really enjoy the modern Bethesda design philosophy. It's a shame Bethesda gets the "mods will fix it" pass, Bethesda should be making better games. They've arguably gone downhill in most ways. Another reason is performance, at least on PC. There's no good way to recommend a game where even on a high end rig you're facing an unoptimized mess.

Can't wait to see where the game goes in the future, but with it's overall disappointing and streamlined nature, I would find it hard to see myself coming back to this game over and over again in the future like I have with previous their games back to Morrowind. Who knows if things will be fixed or changed, or if my opinion will change. YMMV

As a huge fallout 4 fan, I was expecting fallout in space. Boy, were we all wrong. After being lied to again by todd and his new boss Phil, what we got was a boring, bland world where planets are a drag to explore.
People will defend this with, "Its realistic, most planets are empty in real life". Simply eat turds if you are one of these people. No mans sky puts this game to shame. Not

Not to mention it's somehow prettier? Starfield has this grey bland filter on everything that just makes me depressed and bored.

And for the Xbox fans defending this so rigorously, we get it. Youve not had a good AAA game in quite a while, but we need to demand better. After Redfall and Starfield, I am questioning whether I should join the other side of gaming. They seem to have it under control.

It's a big game, but starts way too slowly, and may never get interesting.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
