The loading screens soon grated on my patience after having to watch my ship boost into outer space rather than let me do it,

Companions lack any interesting qualities to make me bother taking them with me.
The graphics look good for what we expect in 2023 but I have read reviewers speak gospel on these textures, and to be frank I have got the game cranked to the max and it's not breathtaking, It's just nice, the lip sync on dialogue can be spot on, or resemble a dubbed anime with the lips failing to match.

Exploration, this is just a boring walk across a ProcGen planet outside of the main hub planets, once you've been to one, you've pretty much seen it all.

Weapons and combat, this lacks any real "meat" to it, enemies are utterly braindead and will stand in the open letting you slot them over and over, when they're not glitching on boxes and loose terrain objects.

Space Combat is a complete farce, not so much dogfighting as it is either instakilled by higher leveled AI ships or it's a slaughter once you unlock Class C ships.

I frankly cannot recommend this game, even if you love Fallout or Skyrims offerings, because this offers nothing new.

The story is non-compelling, gameplay monotonous, menus and leveling are a step backwards, and the NPCs are lifeless. Excellent music as with most Bethesda games. I'll be shelving this one until the mod community improves it.

Bethesda has created a mod for Fallout 4. And the concept itself stretches back to the time of Morrowind.
You should not buy this game at least because you do not want to support such a hack.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 50 hours+ in with the main quest completed twice and 2 faction quests fully completed. A very disappointing execution, very bad main story execution, tons of unnecessary travel waiting with no gameplay purpose, really bad world building, effectively 0 meaningful freedom in quests and storyline. Main story quest is effectively just 15 hours of doing the exact same thing over and over again. The worst part is that is that the locations are super generic and uninteresting locations. There is only one good quest in the entire main story quest line that features a research facility that is switching between dimensions. This quest is the only good quest in the game and it’s such a stark contrast against the extremely unambitious delivery for rest of the game.

Travelling takes forever. I wish this was a fast travel simulator like it’s often mocked for being. The reality is that the travelling is painfully slow despite a 4090 and NVME2 maxed out PC. They add tons of painfully slow landing sequences. You can’t fast travel directly to the planets surface but you must instead travel to its orbit first. You must get scanned for contraband in almost all of the meaningful solar systems which also takes even more time. You also have to wait for you grav drive to power up for upwards of at least 6 seconds out of memory. The worst part is that it serves so little purpose, you almost never get attacked by other spaceships. While any meaningful orbit interactions / quests could’ve been much better executed by just having them appear in the solar system map view as a distress signal. 0 meaningful choice or interesting gameplay in quests. Compared against Cyberpunk the ability to approach a quest in multiple different ways is just non existent. No proper stealth, no different approaches to the objective and instead just a simple speech check at the very end of a quest to skip 10s of combat. Abysmal non existent world building instead of the cool and extensive world building we saw in Fallout 4. The days of exploring the wasteland and coming across tons of cool structures and settings are gone. You got a few small cities that are hard to traverse with not a lot of substance. If you ever hope to come across a cool building with tons of enemies anywhere you’re going to be disappointed. It’s going to be same looking space building facility you see everywhere else. With the same generic 4x4 meter building block set.

7-8 years of development for this? 66% of the game is spent running in barren planet with 0 meaningful world building and tons of artificially added waiting screens. The rest of the 33% is generic combat with the most linear dialogue and quest options imaginable. To call this game too ambitious is not doing it service. This is a very unambiguous game with even worse delivery.

As for bugs I encountered 2-3 bugs that soft locked the main quest as important characters would start to float up in the air, etc. in all cases I was able to reload the save and run up to the person I needed to talk to before they floated into the planets atmosphere. Not too bad on this front for a Bethesda game.

As someone who is a massive fan of fallout new vegas and a big fan of Cyberpunk this was a massive disappointment. The game designs and direction is incredibly outdated and I have to be honest that for Bethesda to be one of only 2 game studios producing massive first person RPGs like this is leaving me sad. If you are new to the genre and not that big of a RPG fan then maybe 6/10 can be a fair rating. But if you are a massive fan of fallout new vegas, fallout 4, Cyberpunk and were hoping for a big leap forward. Then you’re in for the opposite, it’s a far worse experience than even fallout 4. The 4/10 is for the people that never wanted a looter shooter no man’s sky but an actual RPG with a good story and meaningful freedom.

After having beaten the game and putting around a ton of hours into it so far, I have to say that while it's a fun game, I'm sorely disappointed overall.

Starfield is extremely disappointing through the lens of Bethesda's past history, as it's massive regressions and streamlining of the Bethesda design philosophy makes it feel a lot more empty in a lot of regards. Stuff like the loss of AI Schedules, looting changes on both NPC's and general "clutter", a terrible map for the surrounding area/city, the overall reliance on fast travel due to the way traveling and the instances work, space being a buffer instance where there's a small chance of something happening, but it's just there to get a view of the planet before you land on it, sandwiched between 2 loading cutscenes. (Biggest gripe, world feels so broken up and even on planets extremely empty.). A ton of the Bethesda "staples" are cut down to such a degree that it's hard for that level of immersion to "click" in the same way their games have since Morrowind to around Fallout 4. The very basic looting and equipping (We have now fully regressed into having a grand total of 3 equipment slots for armor with 2 additional slots for clothing.) The armor models comes in 2 different sets repainted, and guns are a weird step in a different direction from Fallout 4's customization, as there is much less of a reliance on it here. It's a weird mix of what feels like a blend of laziness, streamlining, or even rushing that I can't quite put my finger on for a lot of these sorely implemented features.

It's both little and big things that make me sad seeing one of my favorite developers streamline their games from tremendous RPG adventures, to instanced mindless looter shooters.

The game is fun despite all this. It has a lot of strengths, keeping at least a large chunk of the Bethesda charm in the jank that stems from the engine. Combat is the best feeling it's ever been. The soundtrack is absolutely outstanding and captures the world completely. Spaceship building is a blast. The new persuasion system is a massive win. The story and side content has been fun, but suffers from the very basic writing Bethesda suffers from.

Overall, It's in a weird place where I really can't recommend it unless you were a massive fan of Fallout 4 and want more of it, or just really enjoy the modern Bethesda design philosophy. It's a shame Bethesda gets the "mods will fix it" pass, Bethesda should be making better games. They've arguably gone downhill in most ways. Another reason is performance, at least on PC. There's no good way to recommend a game where even on a high end rig you're facing an unoptimized mess.

Can't wait to see where the game goes in the future, but with it's overall disappointing and streamlined nature, I would find it hard to see myself coming back to this game over and over again in the future like I have with previous their games back to Morrowind. Who knows if things will be fixed or changed, or if my opinion will change. YMMV

The gun-play is improved from the fallout series but the classic Bethesda exploration and even quest design is just flat out not here. Many main quests early on are just simple fetch quests to generic dungeons that are reused as generic points of interest. My first point of interest I explored outside of quests was re-skinned on a different planet as a main quest dungeon minutes later. How is that acceptable? The faction quests are mostly fun and interesting but the lack of RPG choices in many scenarios is noticeable. Exploring planets is tedious and they feel largely uninspired. The 1,000 planet "selling point" is a huge detriment to the Bethesda formula many of us love due to the inherent downsides of procedural generation. Rarely in this game will you run across a cool new story or dungeon outside of the main quest hubs.

The perk system is lazy as the "challenges" are not challenges. They are simply just utilizing the skills you just purchased 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100 times.

There are pieces here for a really great game but much of the game, especially early, is a slog and that saddens me given how much time seems to be have been put into this game from the Bethesda team.

You know both the companion and enemy AI will be less than impressive, to put it mildly. You know performance, particularly on PC, will not be proportionate with the aforementioned subpar graphics. You know there will be an over-reliance from Bethesda on the modding community to fix these things. All these caveats are present in Starfield, but what has traditionally made these caveats tolerable in past BGS titles is the unparalleled sense of exploration that the games engender. Unfortunately that sense of exploration does not exist in Starfield.

Whether crossing the Commonwealth or traversing Tamriel's terrain you never knew what was going to be over the next hill or around the next bend. Just try to remember the sense of wonder and awe you felt in Skyrim when you first came across Blackreach. With Starfield, a game ostensibly about exploring space, that sense of exploration, wonder and awe is all but gone. Imagine if every point of interest in Fallout 4 or Skyrim was locked behind 4-5 loading screens and only reachable through fast travel (or by running several hundred meters across a barren landscape) and further imagine if virtually every point of interest was copied and pasted using the same assets, same layout and same enemy spawn points. That is Starfield's planetary exploration in a nutshell. 1,000 planets across a large section of a galaxy, all with identical mining facilities, labs, geological formations and enemies. It's soulless, boring, repetitive and lazy. Once it quickly loses its luster what you're left with is a rather boring conversation and loading screen simulator with occasional bursts of combat (which, to their credit, has improved somewhat due to help from the folks that made Doom - though this was an extremely low bar to clear). It's almost as if Todd got tired of hearing his games described as "wide as an ocean, shallow as a puddle" but rather than making those critics eat their words he double downed on that design philosophy out of spite instead.

Will the game perform better and have conspicuously missing quality of life features in a year due to the diligence of modders? Probably yes. But I have a hard time imagining modders being able to replicate that sense of exploration and adventure previous BGS games offered. Such a shame.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
