    I am wondering what Bethesda actually did in the last decade. It feels like a reskinned Skyrim/Fallout with incredibly outdated game mechanics, quests, graphics and full of annoying loading screens without actual space exploration.

    This is Bethesda in all their wonderful and irritating glory. It has incredible amounts of exploration and lore to uncover, the world completely draws you in, but it's plagued by terrible writing, boring characters and god awful character animation. Bethesda..... Bethesda never changes.

    Skyrim is a top 5 GOAT and this is a step back in some ways, 12 years later. Starfield looks great, but fails in almost every other way. Whoever decided on 90% of the game being 900 barren "planets" that are actually just small regions squared off and said that was fun should be fired. Starfield makes me worry for TES6 because I've been waiting 12 years for that and if this is their best next gen effort then that's bad news.

    To studio: post bg3 I am expecting more. you have on a market games like star citizen and no man’s sky, you can use them as example how space exploration should work. No one is expecting you to deliver unlimited number of planets but cut scenes for land and start, limited exploration area….
    My advice: don’t false advertise, do what you are good in, if game will be good and fair, gamers will forgive you many imperfections, don’t overpay your managers.

Starfield was sold by Bethesda as a synthesis of Red Dead Redemption 2 and No Man’s Sky, but delivered a Fallout in Space all instantiated, anachronistic, without freedom, with invisible walls and exaggerated steroids, style a Skyrim with hundreds of random mods. Had it been sold only as a new DLC to Fallout for $30 USD, the disappointment would have been less, as it is a good game on average down from Bethesda. Yes, the engine lacks optimization, a negative surprise for the promise offered. The worst is the poor imagination story and badly told by horrible NPCs and robotics in a 50’s Pulp science fiction environment with a thousand voids, truncated mechanics, nonsense dialogues and decontextualized menus. Anyway, it lacked an affection of Devs style Baldur’s Gate 3 to make a general and professional finish. As they said, Starfield had two previous references to overcome (RDR2 and NMS), but finished well below them, it’s just a second-class space shooter. Either way, there’s no more way for Bethesda to fix, invest more, optimize the engine, fill it with new and interesting content, improve menus and offer more creative DLCs. Time has passed, Starfield is already part of the gallery that devalues the gaming industry along with Cyberpunk 2077 and Forspoken. The scam to sell GamePass worked.” Expand

    Bethesda games were great as open world games. This is in no way open anything, its just a million different rooms you cut scene/loading screen/cut scene to. Starfield Review - A Disappointing Space Odyssey
    Starfield, Bethesda Game Studios' long-awaited space RPG, has finally hit the shelves. Unfortunately, this galactic adventure has left much to be desired, earning a lackluster 6 out of 10.
    The Bad:
    1. Endless Loading Screens: Starfield is plagued by excessively frequent loading screens that disrupt the flow of the game. The frequent interruptions detract from the overall experience.
    2. No Seamless Travel: Despite the vastness of its universe, Starfield fails to deliver seamless travel between planets and space stations. Instead, players are forced to endure more loading screens when traveling between celestial bodies, making the game feel disjointed.
    3. Buggy Mess: Bethesda's reputation for releasing buggy games remains intact with Starfield. The game is riddled with technical issues, ranging from game-breaking bugs to bizarre graphical glitches. These problems are inexcusable for a studio of Bethesda's caliber.
    4. Encumbrance System: Starfield's encumbrance system is frustrating and punitive, making inventory management a chore. It stifles exploration and detracts from the enjoyment of the game.
    5. Missing Maps: Starfield lacks comprehensive maps for its various planets and locations, leaving players feeling lost and disoriented in its sprawling universe. This absence of navigational aids hampers the overall experience.
    6. Missing Vehicles: While the game's universe offers the potential for exciting vehicle-based exploration, Starfield falls short in delivering a variety of vehicles for players to enjoy. This lack of diversity in transportation options limits the sense of adventure.
    The Mediocre:
    1. Ambitious Universe: Starfield's universe is indeed vast and visually impressive. However, it's ultimately a beautiful but hollow shell, lacking the depth and interactivity that would truly make it shine.
    2. Immersive Worldbuilding: While the game's lore and worldbuilding are extensive, they don't make up for the lackluster storytelling and underdeveloped characters. The potential for a rich narrative is squandered in favor of a generic space opera.
    3. Spaceflight Mechanics: While spaceflight controls are serviceable, they lack the depth and challenge that would have made them truly engaging.
    4. Repetitive Side Content: Starfield's side activities quickly become monotonous, offering little in the way of variety or excitement. The universe may be vast, but it often feels empty and devoid of meaningful content.
    In summary, Starfield is a game that promised to be an epic space adventure but falls disappointingly short. The loading screens, lack of seamless travel, and numerous technical issues hinder what could have been an immersive experience. Coupled with a frustrating encumbrance system, missing maps, and a lack of diverse vehicles, Starfield's flaws far outweigh its few redeeming qualities. It's a missed opportunity, and one can't help but feel that Bethesda could have done better. Maybe future patches will fix these problems and make the game, what it should have been to begin with.

    Cons

    - No memorable characters
    - Weak main story which culminates into no answers

    - Low weapon variety and next to no creativity of how to do dmg
    - Load screens are acceptable to some extend, but overused
    - Hitboxes are absolutely awful even with weapons specialization
    - UI - basically missing, a few colors put together in paint as background, no elements, no visual explanations
    - Inventory management - mostly annoying, no search, no filter, no sorting, all jammed up together
    - Weak graphics for a 2023 AAA game, especially one focused on Space
    - No boss fight mechanics
    - While planets have several biomes combinations, exploration is reduced to landing on planets followed by 1. walking, 2. explore cave, 3. explore base, 4. kill the same enemy, 5. loot, repeat for every planet.
    - Space combat is scenery, but lacks identity - somewhere between EVE online and SWBF2
    - No immersion in cities - no reactions to player actions

    The game is okay, but not much more. It doesn't live up to the hype. Generic Bethesda quests, the most fragmented space I've ever seen, and inconsistent 30fps performance that regularly drops. It looks good, but it comes at the cost of countless loading times. You can't even go up a ladder without a loading screen. There aren't too many bugs, but they occur regularly.

I wanted great writing, meaningful dialog, CHOICE, AND CONSEQUENCES, improved gunplay, more satisfying places to go to, and explore, better visuals, better animation. Has it lived up to all my expectations? Yes! It even exceeded most of them! There is no such thing as the perfect game. 10 doesn't mean perfect. This game went beyond my expectations. The fact that it has almost no bugs on console is incredible. The series s is handling this game like a beast! Todd oversold the game a bit but if you pay attention he actually was inline with how the game turned out. Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've played this highly anticipated game and all I kept waiting for was the "ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND" moment that sadly never came. All I was confronted with was a barren wasteland of empty space! Missing were the magical discovery moments! The type of moments you dream of as a kid when you looked up at the night sky and see shooting stars. This was supposed to be the ONE, the stuff of legends that we'd all be applauding for the next decade! This was supposed to be the gold standard of all games moving forward! There are no next gen moments! Somewhere in an alternate universe, they probably got it right, but in this reality, they fumbled the ball! This has to be one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history so far. How does something that took 25 years to become a reality, ended up as a nightmare? Fool me once shame on me.... fool me twice.... Expand

    Starfield is another Bethesda game that fails to revolutionize the formula of loot-shoot-return that the studio is infamously known for at this point.
    I was expecting more, but there's not one system that's at least flawed to a minor degree.
    -Ship building is fine, but the fun stuff is locked behind perks. -Space combat is mindless and boring, the only thing that determines if you win

    -Ship building is fine, but the fun stuff is locked behind perks.
    -Space combat is mindless and boring, the only thing that determines if you win or lose is level difference and perk investment.
    -The story feels generic and uninspired.
    -Gameplay is fine, but I wish there was a bit more, the powers are just another version of Skyrim's shouts but other than being a novelty they just fade in the background, and they eventually lose their appeal.
    -Perks lock you out of BASIC GAMEPLAY FEATURES, and sometimes they're required to complete quests, so you can get locked out of them.
    -The amount of loading screens in this game is astonishing, want to travel to another planet? Loading screen, wanna land on a planet? Loading screen, don't wanna travel half a mile through a barren wasteland of a planet? You guessed it, loading screen.
    -Speaking of planets, how about 950 of them with absolutely nothing to do other than walking around aimlessly for some resources you can't even carry?
    -NPC faces look creepy and lifeless, they just kinda stare at you blankly, it really makes you uneasy.
    -Inventory management is a nightmare.
    -Performance while not egregiously bad is just not acceptable, I was damn constantly dropping below 30 every time I loaded in a big city like New Atlantis.

    There's more, but I'll stop there, overall I'm disappointed by this so called 25 years in the making "space opera".

    Everything else about this game is a complete disaster:
    - the loading screens, overall terrible user experience (UX) design;
    - the amount of bugs and glitches are astounding (not surprising considering its Bethesda);
    - 'the space travel' is a joke, its just a non-convincing, uninspiring, boring emulation of the potential experience, nothing actually happens in space itself except of repetitive boring ship fights;
    - almost all planets are empty and feel generated by AI, major cities and planets are almost as dull;
    - Lore, NPCs, dialogues, factions and quests are dull and and feel generated by AI;
    - AI of the NPCs is one of the worst I've seen in my life (on par with Cyberpunk 2077 vanilla);
    - weapons and perks are boring and don't provide any interesting and unique mechanics to the game role-playing wise;
    - enemies are repetitive and quickly become tiresome to fight with, the fights are just a shooting gallery.

    Don't even think about buying the game, and I strongly advise you to not even try to play it with the Game Pass, any RPG player and/or space enthusiast (astrophile) would get disgusted by what he would experience.

You know all the complaining people are doing about loading screens? A ton of that could be solved if Bethesda had 1 employee, just 1 that had ever owned an iPhone, Blackberry, or Galaxy. Alas, we get to run back and forth for every single quest update, sometimes across many light years, because nobody at BGS said "Hey, maybe we should let them call some of this in."

    Terrible. That alone takes 4 points off of the game. The loading screens, terrible animation, horrible story, and broken AI should take off another 3 or 4 points, but I'm going to say this is a 5...because that's about what it is when you compare it to the other garbage that AAA studios have been releasing lately.

    Finished. Wait until you finish this game. If you thought it was bad before, holy jeez does it find a way to get much worse. I had given it a 5, but after finishing I'm giving it a 2. Absolutely terrible writing, buggy mess, lackluster "innovation", disjointed and jumbled universe (really just a series of boxes), and I could go on, but I'm just glad to be done with it. Play it for the ship building, which is neat. The rest is a slog at best, and painful at times. BGS doesn't deserve your money ever again. FO76 really was enough for that, imo, but we all fell for Todd's lies.

    One more thing…. Let me remind you of some of Todd’s own words: “unparalleled exploration”and “exploration without limits.” It was neither of these things. Not even close. It was a trash game developed to sell GamePass subscriptions to kids whose parents didn’t know why an Xbox Series S is not the same as an Xbox Series X. The game time was padded after data mining by analysts who figured out how many months before someone forgets to cancel a sub and how many hours a month the average Xbox Series S player puts into a game.

    3 months for them to forget about their sub? They average about 20 hours a month? Make the game take about 75 hours. This is today’s Microsoft. Wait until they get ahold of Blizzard and Activision.

    The skill tree is bland, with standard physics and human behavoir that have to be learned AGAIN?
    Like the "ability" not to bee heard/seen everywhere, far away, behind walls and obstacles by all enemies? Why can you not just run and hide like a normal human being? Not to mention all those lame characters that talks and talks about so insanely much the same pov monotone way. Again. The combat is ok enough, but a solid step down from Skyrim and Fallout 4.

    *I never upgraded a ship/weapon or used a single workbench the entire game, just felt too clunky to deal with.
    *The ship builder was a cool idea and fun but I really just wanted to finish the campaign so I could be done already.
    *I used my gun I got at level 8 all the way to the end of the game at level 28.
    *After completing the main quest I went to explore other planets around 6 to be exact and they were just lifeless apart from boulders or a few plants so I felt no need to explore anymore.
    *I had several hard crashes back to Xbox menu, one during the final quest of the game right before rolling credits.
    *The shooting/combat mechanics feel like a really bad Borderlands game.

    I'm going to go play Borderlands 3.......

The game feels empty and disjointed and constantly breaks immersion with so much required interaction through menus and time spent in loading screens. It feels like Bethesda kept all the bad parts from previous games and didn't improve on any of the good ones. The UI is terrible, especially on PC. Why can't you see the contents of tour own inventory and the vessel you're transferring to at the same time? Why do we have to rely on mods to have any sort of filtering when you can have hundreds of items? Why can't we swap weapon mods over to rarer weapons like you could do in Fallout 4? The list goes on. It seems the budget was spent on graphics and that Bethesda is happy to rely on mods to to fix all the glaring issues. The space combat is so boring and bare bones that the game would have been better without it. No need to buy fuel, no need to buy missiles as they just magically recharge. Whoever was making decisions on game mechanics has clearly never played a space sim like Freelancer, Everspace or even anything from the X series. There is no point in any excitement for a Bethesda title anymore as they seem to revel in mediocre releases that simply aren't worth the time to grind through. I pity whoever pitched the idea to Microsoft that buying Bethesda would be a good investment. Well done Todd Howard. As always, it just works. Expand

    Epic StarFail. Stuck in the past. It looks and plays like a 15 year old game and is simply a technical embarrassment in 2023. Especially on Xbox. On Pc Modders will fix a lot of the issues - and believe me, this game has a lot - but on Xbox you won't have Mod Support. Don't buy an Xbox for this garbage! Honestly.

    This is game is disappoing when you just played BG3.
    I played all previous Bethesda games... and this one is to close to the previous ones, and as such seems to be 10 years old
    Big empty places where you spend hours walking to do very low-interest tasks Quests are fetch-and come back based for more parts Combats are like hitting bick sacks of HP until you get a better gun Inventory

    Inventory space management takes 20% of your total gameplay time... and the impact on your walking speed and O2 consumption doesn't bring any gameplay interest

    so yes, from time to time you discover a very nice place, or a quest that has more interest... but so much waiting between two interesting times.

    Being released a few weeks after BG3 which is the complete opposite hits hard. Very hard.

    The issue with Starfield isn't about the endless loading screens that everyone is buzzing about online. At its core, the developers tried to deliver an adventure reminiscent of Firefly, but the immersion is completely shattered by the lack of cut-scenes, set-pieces, and quality motion capture animations. This is, in my view, the game's primary flaw. It's such a shame since Bethesda had a significant budget, and the game had potential – after all, AAA space exploration titles aren't a common sight. Another disappointment is that the so-called "space travels" merely feel like journeying through a corridor with fast-travel between these corridors. You can't fly wherever you want, nor can you land on a planet or moon on your own accord. Moreover, the landscapes on these celestial bodies are utterly dull. Why could No Man's Sky achieve procedural generation, yet Bethesda, with a budget of $200 million, couldn't? The graphics are a mixed bag: on one hand, there's a modern engine underneath with detailed models, but on the other, the lighting is awful and space feels "empty." I don't feel inclined to stay in this world, nor savor its beauty. I've played about 20 hours, planning to finish and delete it. Very disappointed. Played it on Game Pass, which is my only consolation. Had I spent $100 on this, I'd be pulling my hair out right now. You were supposed to be the new Witcher in space. You were meant to defeat the evil, not join it. Expand

    I feel these ''RPG games by Bethesda'' are outdated. They all become really boring if you played one, you played them all as they are just re-skins. They all become really boring if you played one, you played them all as they are just re-skins. This time, they dramatically improved the dialogue and consequences and branching paths which is a BIG improvement over Fallout 4. It's a better game overall but it's still a boring formula: You are in a massive sandbox with NPC's to talk to and hear conversations(I find that incredibly boring by now). It's all about immersing yourself into the lore of the world and getting tidbits of information from the NPCs which add to the overall world. It's no different than forcing yourself to read a novel about a story in another universe but with visuals. Problem is... it's just not fun if you've done it before(if it's your first time ever...you're going to have a blast though. It's going to blow your mind). But there's only so many times that I can play these kinds of games. I was exausted after a few hours... I realized it's just a big collection of ''checklist world'' with people to speak to and open up more dialogue trees and other stories. It was never really fun. Once the novelty wears off(which it wore off really quickly for me), I was left with wanting to go find something with ''gameplay'' which this doesn't. It's gameplay consists of going to procedurally generated environments and shooting then looting. That's the other thing, there are far too many useless items as usual you are spending 50%of the game just looting and managing your inventory. You've done it for hundreds of hours before in Bethesda games... you want to repeat that again? I just couldn't do it. It's not fun and it doesn't add anything anymore beyond faking depth into a game. The worst thing about this game is the empty promises they made initially such as ''the most expansive space world'' you've ever seen and you'll be able to ''travel'' to other planets. I'm sorry but travelling through ''menus'' and teleporting to a cutscene of your planet landing is not my idea of ''the most expansive space travel'' that they had initially hyped this game to be but then changed their claims later on. The ONE feature a space game needs is launching from earth and hitting the atmosphere and piercing through the different levels of the sky until you are in space. That's the coolest aspect of No Man Sky, why would you NOT have that option available for a space game? I'm not saying that it should be mandatory because eventually we will use the fast travel option. BUT to not have it in a space game was a huge con for me personally.

    Problem is the game was on gamepass so they easily got ''millions playing it'' so they will use that as an excuse to build more boring games like this. Sorry it's just an overdone formula by this point. I couldn't last more than a few hours before I was building boredom into my life. I rather play a game with actual gameplay versus a NPC dialogue encyclopedia with menu fast travelling simulator. Is it a bad game? Heck no! It's just a tired and overdone formula that those who played Fallout 3,4,76,Skyrim,Oblivion,Morrowind...that I am completely done at this point. How many dialogues can you listen to before you get tired of listening to random ''stories'' NPCs tell you? They should've released this game 10 years ago.

    Bethesda has created Fallout 4 (not New Vegas) in space. It's a mixed bag clunky, repetitive, 30fps on Xbox is very very slow and clunky but the side quests are entertaining.

    This game does not live up to the hype but is good enough to eat a couple of hundred hours...

    It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

    While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
