I’m scoring this game as a 5 because that’s considered the highest failing grade in the US (60+ is usually passing). Starfield could be an incredible game, but it was rushed to launch and fails a basic test: stability. As of today, it’s an unplayable mess, and an insult to Bethesda’s loyal fanbase.

I paid $499 for a Series X just to play this console exclusive. I paid another ~$100 for early access. It’s been hard to form an opinion of the game’s story, gameplay, mechanics, etc., because it has crashed my console every ~30-60 minutes over the course of 20+ gameplay hours due to overheating. I’ve reached out to Bethesda and Microsoft on this issue. Neither party will accept responsibility; they both told me to reach out to the other company. That said, they acknowledge it. If you search Reddit, Discord, X, or Google for “Starfield Xbox crash,” you’ll see there are hundreds of others dealing with the same issue, and we’re all being told that nothing will be done unless we essentially beta test the game and send crash reports through an app on Xbox that—wait for it—we can’t launch until the system cools down from overheating.

Decent questing, but zero depth. Bethesda has lost the magic they once had, and continues in a rapid downslide. This game is only worth touching if you have GamePass. Do not spend money on this garbage.

If it were an MMO, it would have the potential to be a good game. The structure is there, the planets, the construction of ships and bases, everything ready for the community itself to build a collaborative story. But as a single player (or even party player), it's a boring game, with uninteresting and poorly rendered NPCs, empty planets and a very vanilla UI.

Mediocre at its best of times, unplayable, boring, uninspiring, bug infested, poor-performing, and shallow for the other 99% of the time. It gets a 3 because the ship building is cool and the 5 seconds you spend in space are pretty.

Dissapointing.- A bit soul-less as others have already said. They made some aspects of their game worse than it was in the past, and have not improved in the other areas.

Exploration for instance - the places feel empty, and the tile based system they use for their game may not have been so terrible if it wasn't for the fact that it makes you also feel limited in exploring. Combat

Combat is ok, but its more like a borderlands game without a significant skill system based around combat, and a fairly uninspiring set of weapons to use.

Bethesda have more and more become the activation company we all hoped they would not become, fallout 76 and not starfield being quite hard to recommend that seems more interested in adding features that salesmen like to sell, but without as much substance so that players will et heaps of joy from.

Also, Bethesda, please improve your lip sync tech, its very bad compared to what's on offer these days, sometimes utterly out o sync with what an NPC is saying.

Sure, I think a few people will di it more than me, and perhaps I am over RPG FPS games, so for those I wish you luck. But its been a real disappointment or me.

After a few hours in the game i have to sadly give this a thumbs down, even if I enjoy what someone called the "Bethesda's formula", there are just too many defects and downgrades to give this a pass.

-Lots to do but It feels like they spread the content all over the "universe" , and this works against the game because the sense of immersion is destroyed by the constant need of fast travelling. In comparison "The Outer Worlds" made a much smarter choice by focusing on a specific star system.

    - The "procedural" content is confusing , leaves you constantly wonder if something matters or it's just generated on the fly.

    - The graphics is ok when it comes to architecture but looks terribly outdated when it comes to natural items and vegetation, F76 in comparison looked way better.

    - NPCs look repetitive and very dated compared to other recent games - and interactions feel very scripted.

    - Gore and finishers are completely missing, a downgrade from other Bethesda games.

    - Weapon modding was also downgraded from Fallout 4 and 76.

    - No way to scrap objects to harvest parts and materials, another inexplicable down
    grade.

    - The "space" part feels more like a mini game rather than something that brings it all together as it should have been. You find yourself floating around and unable to really go anywhere. It was also said that the space travelling would have had a sense of danger but in the end product it's as safe as taking an elevator.

    - I can't speak much of the main story as I left it aside for now and chose to explore around instead, but frankly this is probably because I found it so forced and cliche that I didn't feel a sense of urgency to push forward with it.

Overall this game does give you a little "fix" of a Bethesda RPG but it's not the generational game that was promised, by far.

Terribly poor optimized, empty and boring game. 1. Monotonous locations created by a neural network, the developers decided to cheat.

A single player RPG without micro-transactions, a massive world with many hand-crafted locations that definitely provide for memorable scenes, events and experiences on the one hand, on the opposite a myriad of loading screens, barren landscapes that are just material item dumps and the worst possible way of implementing space combat I have seen since Star Trek on the ATARI.

To start with the BAD parts, first of all the worst things of this game that is supposed to be space exploration are... well, "space" and "exploration". Space is, excluding Bethesda's roughly 100 handcrafted locations, a huge soulless void. You start on a map screen, choose a star system, check the next screen, choose a planet or moon, check the next screen, click on a spot to land and then all you do is run around to pick up rocks. Some planets have enemies and other stuff to pick up (yay, plants) and there is a set of random locations from the "abandoned facility and loot item caves" catalogue, which gets repetitive very, very soon.

WHEN you visit a planet with a non-random hand-crafted location, that is where the game shines. I won't spoil anything, but there have been a lot of locations in the first 50 hours of my play so far with great environmental storytelling, places that gave me the creeps etc. - just do the mission where you have to get the wine and you'll know what I mean, that location was insanely fun to play.

But then, space combat feels like dreaming about playing Superman 64 and desperately trying to wake up and is absolutely unplayable unless the difficulty is set to the lowest. Apart from seeing my ship land for 800 times in non-skippable loading screens the controls suck, and there's just no point to have this in the game. Space is not freely explorable, you just chase a few squares above a planet JPG backdrop basically, it doesn't even feel like you're actually moving the ship in any direction, more like changing camera angles until you finally have the damn enemy ship in your crosshairs.

Back to the good stuff. A lot of characters have a LOT to talk about, sometimes little quests will start during seemingly small-talk conversations, and the world building is great. I spent literally the first 3 hours of the game just in the first city talking to people and I was not bored at all. NPCs move around, some talk to each other enabling you to listen in on their conversations, and doing that sometimes actually triggers a quest. And then, on the other hand there's the companions. There's not a lot of them, most of them have to be "bought" to even follow you, and there's maybe 1 or 2 that are interesting. Most are bland and boring, and the ones that seem fun at first either have a weird accent or are useless in battle. Even just the mercenaries for hire in Skyrim are a more interesting squad of characters than all the companions in Starfield combined.

I had a good time so far, and I will keep playing for hundreds of hours for sure, but Starfield is definitely no revolution (it probably also was never meant to be one in the first place) and I don't feel the immersion I felt while playing Oblivion, Skyrim or any of the Fallout games from Bethesda, which is probably due to the fact that there is too much of everything (too many planets, too many systems, etc.) but it definitely is a game that you can have a good time with, the shooting is decent enough, the story is good, some of the faction story lines are good, the music is very good at times, and if you can work around the insanely dumb space combat and don't mind running around for 10 minutes on a grey landmass with nothing but sand and rock just to get 4 chunks of aluminum, you're going to enjoy it.

I genuinely don't understand how people rate this a 0 or a 10. This game is mediocrity personified. It was hyped up to be game of the decade, but fell short completely. Is it big? Yes. Is it worth exploring? Barely. Does it give you a high degree of freedom? Yes, but not to the level that was promised. Is that freedom enjoyable? Barely, almost everything you do feels clunky and like a chore.

    Exploration:
Another point is the exploration. The game has many loading screens that break immersion. Exploring the planets can be annoying because you have to walk long distances in some places since there are no vehicles you can use.
    Story:
I can't speak much about the story because I've only completed a few missions. From what little I've seen of the story, I have loved it.
    Side Quests:
I've been playing more side quests than the main story, and I've loved them. There are typical missions like delivering a package or killing a target with little story, but there are other side quests that have a much better-developed story and can be longer than the game's main story.

Enemies are bullet sponges; be prepared to spend a lot of ammunition if your weapon doesn't do much damage.
The artificial intelligence of NPCs and enemies is quite "dumb."
    You can encounter several bugs.
    Too many loading screens.

If it wasn't for the way Microsoft cheated at the game to try and win the war of who can sell the most consoles then I would rate this at a 7.

No one should be supporting anything Microsoft or anything Microsoft owns. Microsoft owns widows and the entire world operates on widows computers. That is the only reason that all those officials let them buy 2 publishing companies that own 30 or more developer's studio's and hundreds of already successful game franchises to make them and all future games from 30 or more studios exclusive to Microsoft storefronts. They are conning the consumers and developers with gamepass telling people that gamepass gets consumers free games and gamepass helps developers sell games. You can't have both it doesn't work that way. Either people are getting free games not buying them or people are buying games more than ever before not both.

A Promising Odyssey Marred by Technical Hurdles

Starfield for Xbox Series X brings an epic space adventure to life, with a captivating story, rich details, and immersive world interaction. The universe crafted in this game is nothing short of breathtaking, promising hours of exploration and intrigue.

The narrative is a standout feature, weaving a compelling tale that keeps players engaged from start to finish. The attention to detail in the game world is commendable, creating an environment that feels both vast and lived-in. Every nook and cranny holds a secret, waiting to be discovered.

However, the experience is dampened by the frustratingly long loading times, sometimes stretching to a tedious 10 seconds. This occasional lag disrupts the flow of the game, pulling players out of the immersive world.

Regrettably, technical issues prove to be the Achilles' heel of Starfield. The game is plagued by an abundance of bugs that mar the gameplay experience. A particularly severe bug forced me to restart the game after investing 50 hours, as a main questline became irreversibly glitched. This hiccup was only the tip of the iceberg, as subsequent missions were also riddled with bugs, rendering them impossible to complete. Sound issues added to the frustration, occasionally necessitating a full Xbox reboot.

Furthermore, sporadic crashes proved to be a recurring issue. The game's instability became a constant source of concern, interrupting what should have been an otherwise immersive experience.

In spite of its lofty ambitions, Starfield's technical shortcomings hold it back from greatness. With some much-needed patches and updates, this game has the potential to ascend to the stars it so ambitiously aims for. For now, it remains a journey marked by equal parts wonder and frustration.

There are other things which hamper the experience such as the abundance of loading screens, the lack of good space combat & space travel but I'm way more dissapointed that Bethesda hasn't bothered to improve on their foundations. The reality is that no company should be rewarded for stagnating in every aspect of their game development process and its end result. I like the game as I have liked previous Bethesda titles warts and all but I cannot in good conscience say it is a step in any direction except maybe a step back from previous titles. The engine they refuse to update looks worse with each new title released, better lighting and shadows, sure, but to me it just looks like lipstick on a pig. Endless loading screens instead of a seamless experience of exploration and true role-playing. NPC's and facial animations are a real disappointment after playing games like Witcher 3, Death Stranding and Baldur's Gate 3 and one of these is from eight years ago. Just nostalgia for Bethesda games shouldn't excuse their sloppiness. They have the massive backer that is Microsoft now so they really have no excuse (not that they had one before in my opinion) as a AAA developer to deliver such a sub-par product for 2023 while other much smaller studios with a fraction of their resources deliver something amazing both in looks and feel! A real shame, especially when it comes to flying the spaceship because they look great, the personalisation and interiors are cool, and the fighting is fun. But that's limited to the emptiness of space.

A lot of mechanics in the game are also pointless and retract from the experience. The main one being O2/CO2 levels where you can't even run for more than 10 seconds without getting health damage. What's the point of that? That's not fun for anyone.

Graphically it's a nice game, and there was clearly a lot of time and effort put into the design of objects and the world in general. But the stale gameplay, constant load screens & menus - just don't make it worth it.

Starfield is a massive open-world space RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios. It has been in development for over 10 years and has been met with high expectations. However, after playing the game for over 50 hours, I am left feeling disappointed.

The game's biggest strength is its exploration. There are over 100 star systems to explore, each with its own planets, moons, and space stations. There is a lot to see and do in this vast galaxy, and I found myself getting lost in the exploration for hours at a time.

However, the game's exploration is also its biggest weakness. The planets are all procedurally generated, which means that they can feel samey and repetitive. There is also a lack of variety in the wildlife and the environment.

The game's combat is also underwhelming. It is serviceable, but it is not very engaging. The weapons feel weak and the enemies are not very challenging.

The game's story is also a letdown. It is predictable and uninspired. The characters are also one-dimensional and forgettable.

Overall, Starfield is a disappointment. It is a vast and ambitious game, but it is held back by its technical flaws and its lack of polish. I would only recommend this game to fans of Bethesda games who are willing to overlook its shortcomings.

Here are some specific criticisms of the game:

The game is buggy and unstable. I encountered several bugs during my playthrough, including quests that would not progress and enemies that would not spawn.
The game is poorly optimized. The frame rate can be choppy, even on high-end PCs.
The game's UI is clunky and unintuitive. It can be difficult to find what you are looking for.
The game's dialogue is wooden and unnatural. The characters often say things that do not make sense.
The game's quests are repetitive and uninspired. There are not many memorable quests in the game.
I am sure that some people will enjoy Starfield, but I believe that it is a flawed game that does not live up to its potential. I hope that Bethesda will address the game's shortcomings in future updates.
    A 5/10 from me.

A game made in a 25 year old engine is more likely what Todd wanted to convey. Anyone remotely interested in the game has probably seen the trailers and/or heard of the state the game was on launch day. And that's just about how much I know about the game. Because I wasn't allowed to play the game by Microsoft. "Your graphics card does not meet the minimal requirements" is the message I get when I try to open the game. On an RTX 3060. Sure, with how badly optimized the game is, my card will probably do 1080p Low 30fps. A subpar experience for sure, but that's no reason to lock a consumer out of the game right? there's people playing it on integrated GPUs on youtube. So my GPU is 100% not at fault. So what's happening here is an intentional denial of service by Microsoft because I haven't updated my Windows.

Starfield is BGS' most optimized game on launch day yet. Quite the record. And I find that only lasts the players 12-20 hours before the cracks show up in the form of game breaking bugs that ruin hours of progress because an NPC noclipped into space or something of the sort. Remember, that's 12-20 hours where a sizable chunk of your gameplay is running around and watching cutscenes for transitions between planet and space. The physics in this game however is quite the achievement, for BGS. A fraction of the object physics you can smoothly simulate in SF would crash the most community patched version of Skyrim. But then why do we see clips of spaceships spinning like a top in space for no reason? Microsoft was directing a ton of resources into the QC of this game, so the testing done for this game prior to launch probably had the greatest effort put into it in the history of Bethesda Games itself. And yet like a dozen of the initial hours of the game is all they were able to get right.

I only recently got to play FarCry5 and I realized, that game has a better system for facial expressions than SF. Facial expressions was one of the highlights of the game back when SF was just teased. Every aspect of this game makes it look like it's a decade old. A very fitting era for this game because around this time, Call of Duty Ghosts also locked players out of games for not having 6 GB RAM minimum. That got "cracked" real quick. Whether this will be as well remains to be seen. I for one have removed this from my storage. Good thing I didn't have to pay for this blueballing. But I've found on reddit others who weren't as lucky, and bought the premium version of the game. Thankfully I learned my lesson with beth games a long time ago.

Any flawless reviews are from Xbox cultists who know this game HAS to be successful or their Xbox will become irrelevant. More than 6 or 7 out of 10 is a lie and those reviews should be ignored.

The game is fine, it's ambitious and has potential but executed poorly, gun play is very generic and highly repetitive. If you don't have patience, getting through, say, the first 12 or so hours

The game is fine, it's ambitious and has potential but executed poorly, gun play is very generic and highly repetitive. If you don't have patience, getting through, say, the first 12 or so hours will be tough, which isn't great considering the main campaign is only 15 hours. Side quests are probably the more enjoyable side of things, but without a good main story, it feels disjointed.

Best quality are the ships and space combat, I agree that is kinda fun, especially ship customisation, which again is something you'll have to wade through a lot of low-grade content to get to the ships much later in game.

Xbox needed a "Messiah" to save them, unfortunately Starfield arrived instead.

Realistic Score 5.1 out of 10

I couldn't play more than 5 hours. It's by far the most broken Bethesda game at launch! The story is unambitious and full of plot holes. The side quests are very repetitive and boring.

The performance on Xbox Series X and PC is awful which is completely unacceptable given its extremely outdated visuals and lack of RT effects. The load times are extremely long, combat is repetitive,

The performance tests that have been conducted and published so far have confirmed this, with some blaming AMD's sponsorship for causing the game to only run relatively well on Radeon graphics cards. I don't think the solution is to blame AMD, because Bethesda is known for not knowing how to optimize its flagship games, and despite everything they tend to be very successful. Starfield has not been the exception to the rule, although it is interesting that even with the minimum requirements the game works quite well, as long as we have a Radeon RX 5700 XT and not a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti.

It could be a good game, if not for the lies and laziness of the Bethesda team. Instead, it is a total disappointment. I truly waited for this game and was willing to forgive many things as a "serial Bethesda player" since TES III Morrowind, but this is just appalling.

Getting into upgrading my ship and it seems pointless. Don’t really need to. I have the most expensive one. I’ve completed 3 campaign missions. Leaving that out of the review because of how short it is. Todd Howard really over sold this one. PCs are having problems running it do to poor coding. Todd Howard told them to get a more expensive PC. Dudes on a losing streak. About time to snip him and clown boy Phil Spencer. I’ve had enough of these wasted franchises and they want to charge premium prices for this last gen crap. Money talks people. I’m glad this cost me $0 to play. Another issue that bothered me a lot is that in a game with a space exploration theme, you can't land your ships on planets, something that older games like No Man's Sky already do masterfully and that compromises the player's immersion. Another problem is the facial expressions of the characters, and my God, how ugly they are! The excessive number of loading screens is quite impressive, and it greatly hinders the game's immersion, as I'm constantly reminded that I'm in a video game. It might be a good game at some point, but for now, it's just a five. Expand

My PC is not old, and it is not new but having 20 fps with an ugly screen in the first city is not acceptable. RTX 2060 in 2560x1440 is enough to play with Cyberpunk with good quality and no problems. I will wait for some performance fixes. For now 0/10.

Since they are announced. They sold it as the greatest novelty in the era of gaming, and simply a common RPG but in space and with which you cannot navigate in freestyle or in any style. It has many bugs and on Xbox series S and is poorly optimized and takes a long time to load resources, and its stories are simple. It is simply a $1 Dollar game pass game.

This loop happens forever and once you realize that it completely takes away any immersion you may of had. I find myself unable to keep playing as every time I try to play now it hits me with a loading screen(albeit quick) to another location instead of organically going to a place and then unlocking the option to fast travel if you want to. Game is fun when you're on a main planet or locale that is filled with quests and you don't leave it. Because once you do the game fades. Expand

There is really no exploration to speak of. I suppose you can "explore" various unknown landmarks on planets but that's no different than something like FarCry. Actual exploration in space, however, is non-existent (-1pt). The most egregious miss, in my opinion, is the fact that space travel, which is really important to get right, for immersion, in a space rpg, is relegated to fast traveling everywhere (-1pt). Had they simply made fallout in space, I think it would have been received better. But after all the hype and speculation of what Starfield would be and to have the devs lean into that hype and not correct false expectations on the spot leads to the disappointment we're seeing. Final score from me: 5/10. Expand

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
