After a whole decade of bad 3D Sonic games. I can officially say Sonic is back, the real Sonic. Sonic controls the best he ever has since the adventure era. And the music, goes so hard. Especially Cyberspace. Although the weakest part of the game. I’ve still fairly enjoyed them alongside the level design. Most of them were actually brand new rather than old level design. The story is definitely one of the more mature Sonic stories and I even got teary eye at a few cutscenes. I’m probably just sensitive LOL. The Super Sonic fights althoufh sometimes janky. The music makes up for it. It sounds like devil may cry and metal gear solid music. The game might have some pop in issues, cutscene lip syncing issues, a “not so good” final boss and a few other nitpicks. But I still believe this may be the BEST 3D Sonic Game. Even beating Unleashed which was my favorite until now. Thanks for reading my huge review Expand

Having an absolute blast with this game. It's amazing to play a 3D sonic game with the quality of the Dreamcast titles, and possibly better. Technically it runs well on SRS X, I am sure Sega will apply a little more polish in future updates, but I am super happy with this game. Good work Sega.

Sonic Frontiers is a different game, with its technical deficiencies, but with a fresh proposal to the franchise and that at first may feel strange, but nevertheless, it is a game that catches you and sows what could be the future of the franchise.

I'm so happy to say the game exceeded my expectations. The Gameplay has finally found itself as the founding father of a formula I expect Sonic Team to use for years to come. Sonic is fast, extremely fast, but he controls fantastically. The controls are responsive, easy to use, everything blends together wonderfully and you can even set a slider to determine how you want Sonic to play. It's just a joy to play. The Gameplay loop sounds bland on paper: find token, talk to friends, defeat boss, enter portal, get keys, unlock chaos emeralds and you can guess what comes after that. Sonic Frontiers is just so much fun, that loop couldn't be more satisfying. I was genuinely struggling to put the game down, I myself put in 10 10 hours in the first day alone and I was only at the third island. For reference, it took me just over 3 hours to beat all of Sonic Forces. I hadn't even beaten the first island in that time. There's so much content here and it's all superb.

For those thinking this may be another Colours or Generations with good Gameplay but a weak cringy story, fear not. Ian Flynn absolutely understands what makes Sonic Sonic. His character hasn't been this good since Black Knight. Roger provides a new approach to Sonic here, but it absolutely suits the tone of the game in a way that gets better and better the longer it goes on. Everyone else in the game is also spot on, with a highlight coming from new-comer Sage who I can see becoming a fan-favourite for plenty of years to come. The story is engaging, full of engaging lore and references that will genuinely catch you off guard in the best way possible.

The game isn't perfect, plenty of pop-in and jank, but this isn't a review that is intended to focus on it's negative areas. They are absolutely there and by all means, the execution of the ideas in the game could have certainly been better, but assessing the core ideas and philosophies established in this game makes one thing very clear: the effort and passion in Sonic Team has shined through here. If you're wondering if this marks a sign for good things to come in Sonic's 3D future, my answer is an absolute yes. I highly recommend it; it really is what we've been waiting for.

Clearly this is one of the best sonic games. The sonic team has finally found the formula for Sonic 3D.
It is not a 10 for technical problems (popping), this bothers a bit when playing. If they had solved this problem the game would be a 10.
The best of the game? in my opinion the experience when playing with SUPER SONIC.

Sonic Frontiers is by far the best Sonic game in a decade, or even more. Frontiers greatest strength is on it's gameplay, it is very fluid and very responsive, the combat on the beginning of the game may seem a little janky, but it improves when you unlock new skills, and the platform parts of the game, are great.

However, for a future game, I would love to see the combat abilities expanded upon, I’d like to see a lot of those pop-in rails be more integrated into the surrounding land rather than simply floating over nothing, and the Cyberspace levels leave much room for improvement. Though I really ended up liking the shorter level length of the Cyberspace levels, It’s annoying when many of the stages feel 90% 2D. More 3D focus, better momentum, and the ability to lightdash and homing attack enemies without coming to an immediate stop would be greatly appreciated. Likewise, more unique settings in these traditional Sonic stages would be appreciated moving forward.

The music in this game is a phenomenal step forward for this franchise as well. The edm perfectly contrasts to the otherwise somber, but beautiful piano tracks used for the main islands, and the metal tracks used for each Titan boss are perfect representations of what Super Sonic fights should, and feel sound like. The story does it’s best at tying together many of the character inconsistencies that the 2010s left behind, and it did so seemlessly. Though the finale may feel a bit anticlimactic, this story is easily the best the franchise has seen since 2008’s Sonic Unleashed. The voice direction is by far some of the best we’ve ever gotten in a Sonic game as well, and though I would’ve really liked to see some new character models for Sonic and the others to really give this a new era feel, I’m glad we at least got a far better vocal performance to represent the beginning of this new era.

Overall, it’s a fun game. Can there, and should there be improvements for the next installment? Absolutely, but Sega, do not abandon this formula! It works so well for Sonic, and for once It feels like they’ve finally found the perfect formula for 3D Sonic.

What a game. Mild spoilers ahead, but nothing too terrible for those who haven't played yet.

Where to start...well, out the gate, I'm gonna say this is EASILY my second favorite 3D Sonic game, right behind Unleashed. Probably my fourth favorite in the whole franchise (3&K and Mania are my overall favorites).

Let's get the negatives out of the way first so I can gush: Yes, the game has glaring pop-in. It's noticable af and kinda immersion breaking at times. Does it affect my overall enjoyment of the game? Not really. I just kinda wished Sonic team hid it through like, a digital effect considering the cyber space angle of the story.

The Hard Mode secret final boss is...a thing. Never in my life would I think I would be playing that kinda genre in a Sonic game, but...well Sonic has had multiple playstyles before and I guess they had to make it somewhat different from all the mid-game bosses, gameplay wise...so it's whatever. Hard af tho it gave me 2 extra pity lives cus I kept dying for like an hour. Genuine gamer rage type stuff.

A few of the more minor cutscenes have like...little to no animation whatsoever. It's fine for games like Yakuza, but I prefer when my animated characters are actually ANIMATED, but eh, chalk it up to Sega not giving enough time and manpower to Sonic Team yet again.

There's really only like, 4 islands, instead of the 5 that's being marketed. With the last "2" being asset flips of a previous island. Pretty bummer, but despite looking the same, the platforming challenges, puzzles and enemies are different-ish, and that's pretty cool.

Yeah yeah; Green Hill, Chemical Plant and Sky Sanctuary are being reused for Cyberspace. Again. For the 4th game in 11 years. Even reusing level layouts from Gens, Unleashed and SA2....but, imma be real with you chief, this gripe I genuinely just do not care about. For one, the cyberspace levels are basically optional thanks to being able to find keys in the open zone and big, and for two, the level layouts are still fun and sonic still controls close enough to how he does in the open zone, and I still find them relatively fun...red rings are too easy to get tho. Miss the days when they were actually hidden...

OKAY that's enough negativity time to GUSH

So, this is basically Sonic's first collect-a-thon??? Hello???? That's so goddamn cool! I know tons of peeps have heard and thought comparisons to Breath of the Wild, just looking at the game, but trust me, this is a genuine collect-a-thon like Mario Odyssey, A Hat In Time etc, it's just that the maps are really big cus Sonic is really fast. And THAT'S why they're called Open Zones, cus this game is still FUNDAMENTALLY a platformer, and not a true open world game like Assassin's Creed or Marvel's Spider-Man or BotW.

And SONIC, he controls SO well in the open zones! The turning, the drop dash, the boost, the FLOW. It's all so damn good. Easily, without a doubt, the best Sonic has controlled since the original Sonic Adventure, and it's a whole ass game of it instead of just like...1/3rd or half the game! The Open Zones are varied in their platforming, the puzzles make these rails that make traversal all the more smooth (plus rail jumping is GOATED once you get the hang of it), like yeah the puzzles are simple as hell, but y'know...kids game. Gotta give it SOME leeway.

Speaking of it being a kids game, guess what's actually awesome again for the first time in 14 years? The STORY! Now, it ain't as massive in scope as say, SA2 or Unleashed...or even 06, but it's definitely a step in the right direction, ESPECIALLY in the character writing side of things! A big ol' THANK YOU to the MVP Ian Flynn for this! SO much course correcting from the Meta Era's garbage. I've always said I don't particularly care about story in a Sonic game...and tbh I still don't, but I never said a GOOD story wouldn't ADD to an already GOOD game, and this is 100% the case with Frontiers. Sonic is absolutely BACK in all his shonen glory

...and speaking of Shonen glory. THESE BOSS FIGHTS!!! OH MY GOD! The energy, the STYLE, SUPER SONIC BEING DBZ LEVELS OF BADASS, the MUSIC! These are EASILY, without a DOUBT the absolute BEST bosses in the whole franchise, bar none! I have never popped off so hard at a Super Sonic Boss Fight since the Final Hazard, and there's MORE THAN ONE OF THEM! The game is almost a must buy for them alone, at least to a Sonic fanbrat like me, lol

The soundtrack as a whole is fantastic...but then again, this is Sonic, what else is new? Even Big's lo-fi beats to fish to are bumpin'. Genuine good stuff. Pissed that it didn't get a nomination for best OST at the Game Awards, as it more than deserves at least that.

So, overall thoughts, Sonic Frontiers is not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination....but it is absolutely a FANTASTIC Sonic game. I highly recommend anyone who's familiar with the series and platformers in general give it a try!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here's my honest review of the game as a whole:

While I have the Xbox Series X's lesser half, the Series S, I genuinely enjoyed the visual quality of the game and loved the entirety of the game with a passion reminiscent to when I first played Sonic Adventure, up until Sonic Frontiers released Sonic Adventure was my favorite sonic game, and that for a modern era game is worth a lot. The pop-up of the platforms is still present, which doesn't bother me that much unless Im trying to actively search for platforms. The few glitches I've encountered like at one point with the power boost I phased through one of Asura's arms cause i went too fast, in cyberspace at some point Sonic just stood on a rail while grinding it and I found that hilarious, and I phased through the titans a few times when attacking them, but honestly besides phasing through the titans these aren't necessarily big problems. In terms of the animation this game is from what i think nearly at peak in terms of sonic games, but sometimes like when talking to Amy, the animation can seem kind of stiff or like there's a man in a costume portraying Sonic and they kind of just stand there with little to no movement. Story wise you won't really get the full experience unless you go to every possible story point you can find, which actually means you get more replay value and lore to the franchise at the same time, but even without those extra story bits Ian Flynn's writing is just as good as ever and I enjoyed the experience and little references from past games as well as characters from the comics, even one or two of the old games are mentioned a couple times which I never expected. The gameplay feels like a refined Adventure game to me besides the sort of floaty jumps and maybe slight stiffness of the turning mid-air and when you drop-dash, which of course in the settings can be adjusted to feel more refined. I've never played Sonic Forces and left the game controls as standard so the experience could be as fresh and new as possible to me for both the Open Zone and Cyberspace, and need I say they were right about cyberspace being stiff and weirdly floaty, but much like a few reviews I've seen of Sonic Forces it's enough to be controlled if you know how to handle it well and it's very fun to master, along with the familiar throwbacks to the old Adventure games as well, but the experience while it wasn't the best it is very fun to run through and the open zone was very fluid majority of the time. The puzzles in the game are pretty fun and challenging too and the bosses were creative and awesome to fight, sometimes their mechanics like Squid are reused but in a cool and fun way, even the titans use the same mechanics in the some twisting ways. The final boss may not be what you expect it to be so you may get underwhelmed at first, but if you play on hard mode you will have a better time I will guarantee, it's kind of hard to get through but it's worth it in.. The End.

This new era that Sonic Team has begun will be a great one if they continue to play their cards right, while of course it isn't a flawless start it is a great one, there was more I could touch on like the decent amount of enemy varieties but you should experience it for yourself to see what Im talking about. It seems almost everyone, including myself, is excited to see what's next for our beloved hedgehog.

Pop up can be a bit much at times and some of the battles frustrating due to camera issues, but overall the positives WAY outpace the negatives. There is an almost zen feeling to the “open world “ and the “cyber” levels add the needed excitement spike. Often repeated tip, but go to settings and switch to the Performance mode if your system allows. You’ll not really notice the resolution change, but the jump from 30fps to 60 is huge! The open world is really fun! The Cyberspace levels are less fun. Sonic and Knuckles have a wholesome bro moment on the second island. The level theming is weird. The first world is grassy ruins, the second world is desert,

If this is meant to be the new direction for the series, then it's a solid start.

So far I really enjoyed this game, I love this new concept when sonic goes open world (or open zone they called it.) despite the world is a bit plain but you will get used to it. I will definitely recommend to play this,

I spent a lot of my time with Sonic Frontiers having a ton of fun, even if there were just as many moments where I was frustrated and ready to be done with it. This isn’t a great game, but it’s one that should satisfy Sonic fans desperate for an interesting game starring their favorite blue blur, and for the first time in a long time, it feels like the series may have a sense of direction. There’s still work to be done to make it more than that, but this is a big step in the right direction.

Big,fun, impressive at times, a little rough around the edges maybe, but Sonic: Frontiers is a step in the right direction for Sega and the beloved blue blur.

Sonic Frontiers is a fascinating move into open world for the Sonic franchise. It's frequently flawed, and doesn't always match the heights of Sonic's best games. But the fact that it occasionally does reach those highs, while offering a totally new experience, is pretty impressive, and leaves Sonic Team with a strong foundation to improve upon.
