Its just all around bad. Feels like a Sonic reskin of something else. After playing through Origins and going to this, it's an absolute joke.

As a long-time Sonic fan (@39) I've been through pretty much all Sonic games (minus Nintendo Exclusives, Forces & Colors HD) I can say this game isn't as bad as Sonic '06, but it isn't better than Sonic Unleashed as far as gameplay goes. The storyline, dialog, and cinematics I have to admit very well done though.

The storyline, dialog, and cinematics I have to admit very well done though.

To me, Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast will always be top-tier. The gameplay in Frontiers is frustrating at times simply because of all the combinations of attacks and moves. The trainer is okay to learn the attacks but it just throws you in. I died many times battling the island bosses simply because there is no explanation on how to go about the quick-time reactions.

Another issue is the locked camera, there are times I needed to look at the stages to see if I missed a ring or item. I can't turn around the camera to look back. Plus, batting the bosses also proved difficult because of the camera getting either getting up close to Sonic or so far away you can't see where you are at.

The stages you go through are all the same type, just different arrangments, all based on stages that have been used in the past (Green Hill, Chemical Planet, Sky Sanctuary, City Escape) All 'nostalgic' levels, nothing original other than the music for those stages.

I loved previous Sonic titles because it was simple and enjoyable (for the most part). Frontiers could have worked if it was a new franchise maybe, but to take the Sonic franchise (to me) and make it seem more RPG-ish to nearly grind for items for Sonic to gain new abilities and attacks isn't what a Sonic game is about IMO.

I get that many others love the game. I believe that to be more among the lines of 'Honey Moon' phase, great at first but soon the facts start to settle in once all fan fair dies out, Frontiers will eventually show its flaws. Simply put, Sonic Frontiers is a very complex game for even a veteran Sonic gamer like myself and too complex for its own good.

The only saving grace in this game is the storyline (thanks in part to Ian Flynn), dialog, and cinematics as I said before.

Best to describe this game is "boring" , "bland" and "unpolished"

Boring : the color scheme for the islands is completely gloomy and dead. The piano music makes me wanna sleep. The story has an incredibly dark tone where death is the whole theme. It's done horribly. The character interactions are boring too. Bland : the art direction is a cheap copy of BOTW and none of the ideas here

Bland : the art direction is a cheap copy of BOTW and none of the ideas here are new. The cocos are bland chaos. The cyberspace is sonic generations. The cyber aesthetic was done in forces already. Unpolished: it's glitchy , graphics look not that impressive , sonics model has fabric texture for some reason. There's barely any animation here , and the cutscenes look like fangames.

Sonic Frontiers is a beautiful step forward for the blue blur and his friends. The combat is varied and satisfying, the story is mysterious and emotional, the voice acting is new while still feeling familiar, and the soundtrack is glorious, whether it's the soft violins of Kronos Island, the EDM music for Cyberspace, or the heavy metal for when you're up against the Titans! In Sonic Frontiers, it's up to you to save Sonic's friends and rescue them from cyberspace, all while trying to overpower the new threats that await. Unlike past Sonic games where you'd speed through levels, Frontiers takes a new approach: Open Zone, and it really pays off! As for the more linear reach the goal levels, they're a part of the new Cyberspace levels. While it's a little hard to get a hold of the, admittedly clunky controls, once you do you'll be S-ranking Cyberspace levels at the fastest speeds possible! Visually, the game looks fairly average, however you can still capture some gorgeous scenery and beautiful views from the Starfall Islands. There are a few gripes I have here and there with this game, but it doesn't knock any points, and they're more nitpicks than anything.

Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a wonderfully crafted game by SEGA and Sonic Team, and is the best 3D Sonic game since Sonic Generations! From its fun and unique combat, to the beautifully designed open zones, to its fast paced Cyberspace stages, to its incredible story, its music, and its beautiful visuals, Sonic Frontiers is worth your time and is a very thrilling game!

10/10... Sonic the Hedgehog is back!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Maybe it's because I'm an old school Sonic fan that enjoyed Sonic in his hayday. Sonic, Sonic 2, 3 &Knuckles...all great games. I even liked Sonic Adventure 1 on the Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure 2 just felt linear. Sonic Mania was a masterpiece and return to form of just a great Sonic Platformer. That being said, 3D Sonic doesn't work and I'm tired of people coming on here to defend bad game play and level design. This game had potential when first announced but clearly falters in its execution. Sonic team needs.to go back to the drawing board and relook at the formula for how they approach Sonic in 3D. Here we are in 2022 and it feels like Sonic Team is still trying to fumble their way through a design that works. BLUF: It doesn't and for.people.who think that this game deserves scores that match a masterpiece like Mario Odyssey....some of these reviewers should be fired for greenlighting these scores. 3D Sonic, currently doesn't work. Sonic Frontiers is a bland buggy mess of a game that is straight up repetitive and unfun to play, it truly is a shame that we have not gotten a good 3D Sonic game since Generations and a big part of that is the developers at Sonic Team working on a disgustingly low budget. It really saddens me seeing what this game COULD'VE been with higher funding and another year of development, butSonic Frontiers is a bland buggy mess of a game that is straight up repetitive and unfun to play, it truly is a shame that we have not gotten a good 3D Sonic game since Generations and a big part of that is the developers at Sonic Team working on a disgustingly low budget. It really saddens me seeing what this game COULD'VE been with higher funding and another year of development, but instead it came out quarter baked. despite all this, this truly is a step in the right direction for the franchise as opposed to Lost World, Forces and Sonic Boom, and again I hope that Sonic Team receives the funding they deserve to make an actual titan of a game that I know they are capable of making. I spent a lot of my time with Sonic Frontiers having a ton of fun, even if there were just as many moments where I was frustrated and ready to be done with it. This isn’t a great game, but it’s one that should satisfy Sonic fans desperate for an interesting game starring their favorite blue blur, and for the first time in a long time, it feels like the series may have a sense of direction. There’s still work to be done to make it more than that, but this is a big step in the right direction.

Big,fun, impressive at times, a little rough around the edges maybe, but Sonic: Frontiers is a step in the right direction for Sega and the beloved blue blur.

Sonic Frontiers is a fascinating move into open world for the Sonic franchise. It's frequently flawed, and doesn't always match the heights of Sonic's best games. But the fact that it occasionally does reach those highs, while offering a totally new experience, is pretty impressive, and leaves Sonic Team with a strong foundation to improve upon.
