Sonic zooms into the open-zone world of "Sonic Frontiers".

The action-packed combat upgrades based on the skill tree and statistics, such as the defense level. The skill tree gives players creativity in combat and requires strategic thinking in order to manage skill points and use them wisely. Different skills are required in certain points of the game, and not just in combat, as too.

Visuals are stunning and visual effects are also used well during combat and while Sonic is roaming freely around the islands. Cutscenes and basic movement in-game are well-animated.

Characters and the relationships between them are well-developed, especially in interactions where the plot progresses.

Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a great game and a celebratory milestone as Sonic has entered a new phase.

    The good:
One Sonic in large themed areas to explore (not open world). It combines the best of 3D Sonic Adventure and the best 2D planes of the most classic Sonics and even a reference to Sonic Spinball. It's funny, absurd, irreverent, it feels like the cool moments of the 90s. Nice graphics. The rails are reminiscent of Sonic Adventure (and that FFX cinematic, only here you control them

The rails are reminiscent of Sonic Adventure (and that FFX cinematic, only here you control them and don't just watch). Very well managed loading times. Giant and menacing enemies. We have surprise guests

    The bad:
It has an excess of Pop up and they do not implement fog to hide it. The novelty of the large area to explore ends soon. Enemies not very inspired (that if the generic robots have always been since the beginning of the saga). Sonic's bad reputation in 3D will drive many away. The fishing mini-game we already have many fishing mini-games.

    Lo Meh!:
It's a great nod to the movie Sonic 2
If you hate games where the accompanying characters never shut up, it's the same here. Console mods are expected to see Sanic and other recolored eyesores from deviantArt and fanfics

First Titan boss: a little underwhelming, just a button smash which I failed, I realized where I had gone wrong and will get back to it later, I guess. All you need is to smash the buttons and do a couple of combos, it seems a bit of a boring boss to be honest. I still have 3 islands to do but I have a good feeling my opinion won't change.

I am glad I bought the game but also feel I should have waited for the first price drop.

As a long-time Sonic fan (@39) I've been through pretty much all Sonic games (minus Nintendo Exclusives, Forces & Colors HD) I can say this game isn't as bad as Sonic '06, but it isn't better than Sonic Unleashed as far as gameplay goes. The storyline, dialog, and cinematics I have to admit very well done though.

To me, Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast will always be top-tier. The gameplay in Frontiers is frustrating at times simply because of all the combinations of attacks and moves. The trainer is okay to learn the attacks but it just throws you in. I died many times battling the island bosses simply because there is no explanation on how to go about the quick-time reactions.

Another issue is the locked camera, there are times I needed to look at the stages to see if I missed a ring or item. I can't turn around the camera to look back. Plus, batting the bosses also proved difficult because of the camera getting either getting up close to Sonic or so far away you can't see where you are at.

The stages you go through are all the same type, just different arrangments, all based on stages that have been used in the past (Green Hill, Chemical Planet, Sky Sanctuary, City Escape) All 'nostalgic' levels, nothing original other than the music for those stages.

I loved previous Sonic titles because it was simple and enjoyable (for the most part). Frontiers could have worked if it was a new franchise maybe, but to take the Sonic franchise (to me) and make it seem more RPG-ish to nearly grind for items for Sonic to gain new abilities and attacks isn't what a Sonic game is about IMO.

I get that many others love the game. I believe that to be more among the lines of 'Honey Moon' phase, great at first but soon the facts start to settle in once all fan fair dies out, Frontiers will eventually show its flaws. Simply put, Sonic Frontiers is a very complex game for even a veteran Sonic gamer like myself and too complex for its own good.

The only saving grace in this game is the storyline (thanks in part to Ian Flynn), dialog, and cinematics as I said before.

Sonic Frontiers is by far the best Sonic game in a decade, or even more. Frontiers greatest strength is on it's gameplay, it is very fluid and very responsive, the combat on the beginning of the game may seem a little janky, but it improves when you unlock new skills, and the platform parts of the game, are great.

Incredibly fun. The bossfights are some of the most epic moments in any game I've played, getting Sleeping With Sirens for the music is ridiculous. The open zone is great and a good new direction for the series to go. Don't let the critic reviews sway you, this is an amazing game.

No game is perfect, but this game is really good, I would give it a 9 because I’m a Sonic Fan, but I would be too biased. Anyway, 06 was 16 (f word) years ago. Who. Cares. It was bad? Yes, maybe. “Uh, Sonic should’ve died in 2D”

    What about Mario then?

    “Same thing for Mario”

No. After 10 years of cringe-jokes, bad writing we finally got a game where Sonic takes itself seriously again. It was never meant for kids. It was meant for everyone. Yeah the movies did him dirty (I’m not saying the movies are bad, they are REALLY good. Thing is, they made Sonic character for kids. It make sense since he’s still a kid there but then everyone will think he is. When he’s not.)

“Image being a kid, he would be bored playing this game”

Are you that kid? Stop self projecting. Why we have to treat Kids like they are stupid? Super Paper Mario was 14 years ago. Do I really have to explain what I’m saying? That game aged like fine wine. Bowser’s Inside Story is another one. And this will do the same because it’s good. It’s so good. Cyberspace is the “eh, okay” of the game, I see the potential, it can be improved. And here I thought I would hate this game, I hate open worlds and I don’t like Zelda at all, but I respect it because that’s just me, Zelda makes good games. Wait, silly me, this is an “Open Zone” game (coping? Maybe) but well, I liked it. Maybe that’s why it worked. I recommend it to you all.

Clearly this is one of the best sonic games. The sonic team has finally found the formula for Sonic 3D.
It is not a 10 for technical problems (popping), this bothers a bit when playing. If they had solved this problem the game would be a 10.

Sonic Frontiers is a beautiful step forward for the blue blur and his friends. The combat is varied and satisfying, the story is mysterious and emotional, the voice acting is new while still feeling familiar, and the soundtrack is glorious, whether it's the soft violins of Kronos Island, the EDM music for Cyberspace, or the heavy metal for when you're up against the Titans! In Sonic Frontiers, it's up to you to save Sonic's friends and rescue them from cyberspace, all while trying to overpower the new threats that await. Unlike past Sonic games where you'd speed through levels, Frontiers takes a new approach: Open Zone, and it really pays off! As for the more linear reach the goal levels, they're a part of the new Cyberspace levels. While it's a little hard to get a hold of the, admittedly clunky controls, once you do you'll be S-ranking Cyberspace levels at the fastest speeds possible! Visually, the game looks fairly average, however you can still capture some gorgeous scenery and beautiful views from the Starfall Islands. There are a few gripes I have here and there with this game, but it doesn't knock any points, and they're more nitpicks than anything.

Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a wonderfully crafted game by SEGA and Sonic Team, and is the best 3D Sonic game since Sonic Generations! From its fun and unique combat, to the beautifully designed open zones, to its fast paced Cyberspace stages, to its incredible story, its music, and its beautiful visuals, Sonic Frontiers is worth your time and is a very thrilling game!

However, everything else outshines it. The story is great with the help of Ian Flynn, known for the Sonic IDW comics. The voice acting is okay for the most part, Amy's in particular is wonderful. Character interactions are great and feel so much better than what we got in the last decade.

Exploring the open world is genuinely great. I always find myself exploring to see what else there is to find instead of going to the main goal. Last night, I said I'd only play for another hour. Before I knew it, I had played for 8. (Also I do not understand the complaints about the world feeling "empty", I think stuff being spaced out is necessary given how fast Sonic goes.)

But more or less, this game leaves a wonderful foundation for follow-ups. I cannot wait to see what the Sonic series brings in the future.

P.S. The soundtrack is FIRE and they got Kellin Quinn from Sleeping with Sirens on it. 100/10 banger OST.

I'm so happy to say the game exceeded my expectations. The Gameplay has finally found itself as the founding father of a formula I expect Sonic Team to use for years to come. Sonic is fast, extremely fast, but he controls fantastically. The controls are responsive, easy to use, everything blends together wonderfully and you can even set a slider to determine how you want Sonic to play. It's just a joy to play. The Gameplay loop sounds bland on paper: find token, talk to friends, defeat boss, enter portal, get keys, unlock chaos emeralds and you can guess what comes after that. Sonic Frontiers is just so much fun, that loop couldn't be more satisfying. I was genuinely struggling to put the game down, I myself put in 10 10 hours in the first day alone and I was only at the third island. For reference, it took me just over 3 hours to beat all of Sonic Forces. I hadn't even beaten the first island in that time. There's so much content here and it's all superb.

For those thinking this may be another Colours or Generations with good Gameplay but a weak cringy story, fear not. Ian Flynn absolutely understands what makes Sonic Sonic. His character hasn't been this good since Black Knight. Roger provides a new approach to Sonic here, but it absolutely suits the tone of the game in a way that gets better and better the longer it goes on. Everyone else in the game is also spot on, with a highlight coming from new-comer Sage who I can see becoming a fan-favourite for plenty of years to come. The story is engaging, full of engaging lore and references that will genuinely catch you off guard in the best way possible.

The game isn't perfect, plenty of pop-in and jank, but this isn't a review that is intended to focus on it's negative areas. They are absolutely there and by all means, the execution of the ideas in the game could have certainly been better, but assessing the core ideas and philosophies established in this game makes one thing very clear: the effort and passion in Sonic Team has shined through here. If you're wondering if this marks a sign for good things to come in Sonic's 3D future, my answer is an absolute yes. I highly recommend it; it really is what we've been waiting for.

9/10 truly the best Sonic game we've had since Sonic Adventure 2. Absolutely amazing. Well done SEGA! The only thing stopping it from being a perfect 10 is the lack of Chao Gardens. Please add CHAO GARDENS!

Having an absolute blast with this game. It's amazing to play a 3D sonic game with the quality of the Dreamcast titles, and possibly better. Technically it runs well on SRS X, I am sure Sega will apply a little more polish in future updates, but I am super happy with this game. Good work Sega.

After a whole decade of bad 3D Sonic games. I can officially say Sonic is back, the real Sonic. Sonic controls the best he ever has since the adventure era. Graphics are some of the best ever in a Sonic game. Open world is littered with tons of puzzles and bosses to do. It’s so fun just get to max boost and run through really fast throughout the islands. And the music, goes so hard. Especially Cyberspace. Although the weakest part of the game. I’ve still fairly enjoyed them alongside the level design. Most of them were actually brand new rather than old level design. The story is definitely one of the more mature Sonic stories and I even got teary eye at a few cutscenes. I’m probably just sensitive LOL. The Super Sonic fights althoufh sometimes janky. The music makes up for it. It sounds like devil may cry and metal gear solid music. The game might have some pop in issues, cutscene lip syncing issues, a “not so good” final boss and a few other nitpicks. But I still believe this may be the BEST 3D Sonic Game. Even beating Unleashed which was my favorite until now. Thanks for reading my huge review Expand

Sonic Frontiers is a different game, with its technical deficiencies, but with a fresh proposal to the franchise and that at first may feel strange, but nevertheless, it is a game that catches you and sows what could be the future of the franchise.

A mediocre game with interesting purposes, but it fails during execution. A lot of flaws of collisions, terrible physics and soulless environment. Cyber levels are short, very linear and repeating the assets of Sonic Generations and Forces. The positive point goes to the Original Soundtrack (maybe the major point). So far I really enjoyed this game, I love this new concept when sonic goes open world (or open zone they called it.) despite the world is a bit plain but you will get used to it. I will definitely recommend to play this,

This game is absolutely amazing and I have wanted a Sonic game like this since Unleashed. The combat is amazing, the music is great, controls are very good on my slider settings and the Story from what I have seen so far seems like it will be one of the greatest Sonic stories. I heavily recommend that you buy this game and the future is looking bright for the Blue Rat.

It runs SO SMOOTHLY on Series S, and the Series X version is beautiful!
Thx Ian Flynn for the best story in a Sonic game in 10 years!!!

I am blown away, I expected the open world parts and combat to be the most jank part of Sonic Frontiers but it controls remarkably well. This is gonna be a really fun era for the hedgehog if they fully utilize this control set in later games. The mood, writing, and soundtrack are phenomenal I have been smiling non stop since I started playing.

An unexpected GOTY contender for me,

This is the first Sonic game since Unleashed to have a great emphasis on story.
Presentation as a whole is great but Roger's voice direction rubs me the wrong way.
The open world is really fun! The Cyberspace levels are less fun. Sonic and Knuckles have a wholesome bro moment on the second island. The level theming is weird. The first world is grassy ruins, the second world is desert,

If this is meant to be the new direction for the series, then it's a solid start.

I spent a lot of my time with Sonic Frontiers having a ton of fun, even if there were just as many moments where I was frustrated and ready to be done with it. This isn’t a great game, but it’s one that should satisfy Sonic fans desperate for an interesting game starring their favorite blue blur, and for the first time in a long time, it feels like the series may have a sense of direction. There’s still work to be done to make it more than that, but this is a big step in the right direction.

Big,fun, impressive at times, a little rough around the edges maybe, but Sonic: Frontiers is a step in the right direction for Sega and the beloved blue blur.

Sonic Frontiers is a fascinating move into open world for the Sonic franchise. It's frequently flawed, and doesn't always match the heights of Sonic's best games. But the fact that it occasionally does reach those highs, while offering a totally new experience, is pretty impressive, and leaves Sonic Team with a strong foundation to improve upon.
