You’ll enjoy the story and exploration side of Post Trauma, perhaps more than the combat sections and latter puzzles.

Post Trauma is a survival horror game that aims to follow in the footsteps of Silent Hill, but falls far short of the mark. The main culprit is a flat and underwhelming combat system that undermines what is otherwise a fairly well-crafted exploration and puzzle-solving component. It’s a decent starting point that could have benefited from a bit more polish, but it's worth remembering that this independent project began as the work of a single developer, who later received support from a small development team—though likely a bit too late in the process.

Puzzles are a divisive element in many Survival Horror games. When you need to justify and expand game time for an experience mostly driven by vibes and avoiding awkward combat, what else can you do? Clearly, one easy answer is to add backtracking in order to sniff out keys and doohickeys to fit into mysterious slots powering absurd door-locking mechanisms. It works for Resident Evil, at least. But there’s a balance in making this stuff actually work. A balance the subject of today’s review struggled with, to say the least.

Post Trauma does pretty well thanks to its immersive Silent Hill-esque atmosphere and its sordid and intriguing universe, enhanced by high-quality sound design. However, the rigid gameplay, the sometimes temperamental camera, the limited bestiary and a few texture and flickering issues, as well as collision bugs, detract from the experience. Despite these flaws, the title remains an immersive experience that knows how to play on its oppressive atmosphere to captivate thrill seekers. Indeed, given its modest price (€15), it remains an honest offering.
