    The Bearded Ladies signs a winning return to the Tactical-RPG genre after the potential trial run Mutant Year Zero. Miasma Chronicles retains the same formula in gameplay, namely a title combining RPG, Xcom-style strategy and even infiltration to make the task easier in combat. The scenario, the characters, the graphics and the sound form an organic universe largely at the level to make the game one of the beautiful surprises of the year 2023. There remain a few imperfections (camera, difficulty, etc.) to be corrected so that the Swedish studio establishes itself as the leader of the genre for the rest of its adventures.

    Miasma Chronicles isn’t far removed from the studios previous outing with Mutant Year Zero in neither setting or gameplay. That doesn’t mean however that it’s a bad game at all, Miasma feels more polished and nuanced than its predecessor which speaks volumes of the talent at the studio. However, for me the narrative wasn’t as strong as the world itself which wasn’t helped by the feeling of an abrupt ending to the whole affair. But Miasma Chronicles remains a good time due to the mix of tactical strategy and stealth gameplay.

    Miasma Chronicles offers us a great world with excellently implemented game mechanics and an impressive graphic and artistic compartment. A game not to be missed for fans of the genre, and an excellent opportunity for newcomers to try their hand at a solid and fascinating strategy game.

    Everything in Miasma Chronicles comes together to ensure that it is a blast to play through. The mix of real time exploration and turn-based combat is intriguing, but combine in a good story and it will keep you hooked.

    Despite its flaws Miasma Chronicles is a good but not quite great game that sucks you back in for more and will be a decent pickup for anyone who enjoys tactical turn-based games.

    The Bearded Ladies wanted to make a richer, deeper and more ambitious game, but unfortunately, they failed. Even if you ignore the glitches, fix the difficulty and fine-tune the combat, the story and universe are far less interesting than the experience offered by Mutant Year Zero, especially as the main protagonist, Elvis, was quite annoying. From what we have seen on the PC version, the game runs without too many problems, but several players complained about the balance of the battles. If you are still interested in the game, we can only advise you to wait for the expected patches to arrive or to play the more stable PC version.

    A solid turn base game. In total I put roughly 59 hrs into miasma chronicles and completed the main campaign and all side content. The gameA solid turn base game. The game overall is very enjoyable the combat is fairly simple to get to grips with if I would compare it to anything I would say wasteland 3. The world and the story I found awesome the characters are cool to and well voiced the exception for me was the main character I found his voice acting to be a little off. The post apocalyptic world is fascinating and the art work is strong. I enjoyed exploring every nook and cranny. I thought the weapons and armor could have had more stats and perks also I found the perk system a bit simple. If you like turn based games I’m certain you will like this especially if you liked wasteland 3.… Expand

    For those that played the game’s predecessor, Miasma Chronicles improves upon it in almost every way. For those that have not played the previous game, Miasma Chronicles feels like a mix of expanded XCOM mechanics in a post apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Fallout games. For those that have not played XCOM or Fallout read on for an overview of Miasma Chronicles.

    The game has two modes, exploration and combat. During exploration you can talk to people, buy/sell items, forage for loot and silently pick off enemies without triggering combat. Scoping out enemy positions in exploration mode and sniping stragglers is recommended on regular difficulty and above… more on difficulty settings in a moment. Trying to take down a squad without thinning the herd first is a tactic for true pros to the TRPG genre on higher difficulties or for the machinists out there. The game rewards tactics and punishes running in guns blazing and cover be damned.

    After you have thinned out the enemy it is time to set up an ambush in a way that gives you every advantage. When possible take the high ground as it massively increases your hit chance. If fighting on the ground use your three person team to set up flanking fields of fire by placing them in a wide V formation… more on flanking in a moment. Once combat starts it becomes a game of trying to outflank the enemy or maintaining the high ground.

    Difficulty, tactician mode and flanking.

    There are four levels of difficulty. I played some on the default but mostly on easy. Tactician and tactician lite adjust how much distance, cover and elevation effect hit chance. I played on Tactician mode which makes flanking and taking the high ground important. Just as elevation increases hit chance so does flanking. Same applies to the enemies chance to hit your team.

    Story and character progression.

    The story was well done. The voice acting worked for the most part. As you level up you gain points to spend on improving your various abilities. Your hero gets a few special abilities that can really turn the tide of battle like chain lightning, teleportation and a medic companion, among other things. The slow drip of weapons upgrades fit well with the scarcity of a post apocalyptic setting. Over time however you will have a well equipped and supplied team.

    Some tips to make your game a bit smother.

    On tactician mode elevation and flanking are very important, yet sometimes you will be in a situation in which you are not in an optimal position. There is a weapon that fired rounds that bounce off of things. I recommend equipping it on one of your crew as it can come in quite handy at reaching an enemy behind cover.

    Sometimes in exploration mode when you are sniping you may need to lure an enemy into a better position, this is where a glass bottle comes in handy. Throw one to lure it to the right spot then take them out silently leaving their buddies none the wiser. On some maps there are audio lures such as radios that can be used to lure enemies to their demise.

    Knock grenades are great for knocking an enemy out of cover during combat to then be blasted by your team. Best done at the beginner of a turn. Once you get the teleportation miasma you can use it against enemies for the same effect.

    The game gives you a lot of room for tactics. For example sending a squad member forward to kick off combat with a long loud shot, then teleporting them on top of a building with the rest of your team and slaughtering the enemy as they charge in. The game allows for some creativity here.

    Cons.

    Game has many bugs, some of which can be annoying. Stuck in walls, game quite saving, once was unable to finish a side quest till I left the area, completed a different quest then went back at which point to quest registered as completed. Most of the bugs were minor, but the intermittent save game bug and quest bug were annoying. If the save game bug appears just leave the map then returning should resolve it.

    Bugs aside, this is one of the best TRPG’s I have ever played and I been playing them since the 1990’s. I absolutely love sneaking around in exploration mode, picking off enemies, setting up devastating ambushes and then mopping up what is left. This never got old to me!

    As is I give the game an 8 out of 10 and after it is all patched up I would bump that up to a 9. Miasma Chronicles is a bit of a fresh take on an aging genre.    … Expand

    Preface this with stating that I really like this genre of game, and I am actually enjoying this game.

    Overall, I think this is a good game, but there are notable flaws.
    -Some areas there is significant framerate dips, and that's in performance mode.
    -gun sounds don't match or sync with gun and animation. The rifle shooting 3 bullet spread shouldn't sound like a single shot laser.
    -a few times this happens, where there is a cutscene dialogue exchange between an antagonist and the main character, and when completed, you are immediately in combat where your squad is out in the open and it's the enemies turn.
    -currency reward and shopping. I get in a post apocalypse setting, resources are low, but for a game, there should be a better system. Battles are not random encounters, so you grind for currency, and the random plastics you find are in incredibly small amounts. by the time you earn enough to purchase a gun, you've already found a better gun.
    -Would be nice to see more side quests to earn exp/money
    -They probably should have spent more time with some of their cutscenes. They use the in-game engine for these scenes. This is probably an issue with a lack of proper scene setup and cinematography. Many of the scenes need consistency in it's camera work. There was a scene that was supposed to be serious but I was taken out of the emersion when the background showed blood everywhere BEFORE the one character shot and killed everyone.

    Several patches would be needed, but months later they do not arrive, so there is also a lot of disinterest.

    Miasma se situe dans la première catégorie : son combat au tour par tour est indéniablement brillant et bien pensé : un régal tactique à dire vrai ! d’autant qu’il s’avère plus accessible que Mutant Year Zero du même développeur : un mode facile est disponible ! et heureusement parce qu’en ‘normal’, c’était coton sur le jeu précédent, alors sur le nouveau avec -parfois- ces hordes d’ennemis particulièrement retors, ça pourrait être mal barré…

    Notons en tout cas que l’interface à la manette est fort bien faite et que par ailleurs, l’option furtive est souvent possible (en temps réel dans ce cas) avec des éliminations furtives également possibles (le temps d’un tour) en fonction des capacités et du matériel dont vous disposez…

    Signalons également que la musique (interactive) est de bonne facture et que les graphismes sont très réussis, pour ne pas dire tout simplement magnifiques, techniquement et artistiquement parlant : c’est digne d’un jeu triple A, sans problème ! Le mode perfs tient globalement bien la route (et ses 60 im/s) mais les temps de chargement restent trop longs (presque 30 secondes entre chaque zone… à chaque fois !).

    Ces compliments (mérités) ayant été formulés, Miasma vous énervera sur tout le reste, plus ou moins régulièrement, à savoir son histoire volontiers bidon (pour ne pas dire anecdotique et pleine de trous et de raccourcis navrants) et surtout ses personnages complètement ratés !

    Tellement ratés qu’ils sont tous hyper énervants, tellement ils sont cons et bourrés de clichés à deux balles, usés jusqu’à la corde. On a rarement vu un héros aussi tarte, aussi neuneu ou bien un robot wesh-wesh qu’on a envie de balancer à la casse au bout de… 30 secondes, montre en main. Et ce ne sont là que les exemples les plus.. frappants et cons. Même les ‘méchants’ ou les pnj les plus secondaires sont repoussants de connerie et de maladresse d’écriture…

    C’est donc une régression stupéfiante quand on repense -justement- aux personnages de Mutant Year Zero, plus originaux et bien plus attachants que cette distribution de trous de balle qu’on a ici ! sans compter un agenda woke écolo-con (et de minorités incluses obligatoires) également bien pénible !

    Mais bien entendu, si l’on n’est pas trop sensible à ce genre de soucis, Miasma Chronicles reste tout à fait intéressant… surtout pour sa belle présentation et ses combats au tour par tour !    … Expand
