Jagged Alliance 3 is a masterful blend of different genres. At the surface level it’s a tactical shooter with some heavy simulation elements, but it expands during the lengthy campaign into deep strategic elements, managing multiple troops of soldiers and deepening your bond to those colorful and satirized mercenaries with surprisingly well-crafted and deep roleplay elements as well. The lack of hand-holding or in-depth tutorials may add to the struggle for survival for some, but also adds a steep learning curve and hefty barrier of entry to an otherwise extraordinary game.

Largely successful implementation on Xbox and PlayStation with only slight weak points that do not diminish the quality of an excellent game.

As long as you stick to the single player, Jagged Alliance 3 is very good indeed. The controls are nicely optimised for console, the story is interesting and forging a team out of a bunch of seemingly disparate personalities is a lot of fun. With a deep levelling and crafting system to get to grips with, this is one of the better strategy games of the year.

Jagged Alliance 3 has many ups and downs but I ultimately came away frustrated, especially with the combat and the over complicated controls. There is potential there but I’m not sure I can wait around another 24 years to see that potential flourish.

Waiting more than two decades for a sequel, I’m sure true Jagged Alliance fans will overlook many of its shortcomings and frustrations, as it does capture the same feeling, it seriously needs some work on its control scheme to be more much fluid and less confusing. For every moment I was enjoying, I was equally frustrated when I missed point blank shots or accidently ended my turn prematurely due to a wrong button combination.

We were awestruck by Jagged Alliance 3. We were not expecting a game with such depth on every level. However, he first few hours of play were rather strange, with the old-fashioned interfaces giving the game a retro feel and the contrast in the way the different territories and gameplay were realised. You really get into the mercenary game, and the fondness developed between the different members of the squad is brilliantly made. The quality of the writing is spot on, as is the interest of the sub-plots. The title is clearly made for fans of X-Com, Wasteland and the first Fallout games.
