Herdling is special. It isn’t technically amazing, though it can be stupefyingly beautiful. No spoilers, like always, but the last 90 minutes of my 3 and ½ hour playthrough had my heart in my throat, and at the end, a few tears in my eyes.

Herdling is fantastic. It will not be an emotional journey through wonderful environments for everyone but if you can lose yourself in the world and your job to guide these creatures you are in for a treat. The Calicorns are lovely and you will start to care for them. This is all aided by a great soundtrack by composer Joel Schoch and a great look.

Herdling may be mechanically simple and slow-paced, with little gameplay evolution, but it still manages to stand out. Guiding a herd of creatures to their destination becomes something unexpectedly emotional, thanks to Okomotive’s beautiful audiovisual storytelling and subtle reflection on the animals we’ve loved in real life. Despite the steep price for the few hours it offers, Herdling earns a place among those rare indies that leave a lasting mark - not through mechanics, but through heart.

Herdling is not the game to convert those averse to walking simulators: It can drag, and has a confusing control setup. But it is also beautiful, heartbreaking and heartwarming in equal measures, and that’s all done without a single word spoken.

Swiss studio Okomotive once again demonstrates its talent for narrative experiences focused on nature and introspection. However, far from being just a mere contemplative adventure, Herdling offers clever puzzles and sequences that are every now and then intense. If the goal of video games is also to take us on a journey without leaving the comfort of our sofa, this title succeeds with flying colours.
