Heidelberg 1693 is a gory 2.5D action adventure title. Furthermore, its old-school appeal, hard-hitting audio, and macabre story are fantastic. Sadly, the controls aren't perfect, and the gameplay can be unfairly tough. However, this shouldn't stop you from "enjoying" this blood-soaked, gruesome affair.

Andrade games have created a unique 2D homage to the games of yesteryear while adding a fair amount of new ideas and gameplay. The macabre setting is portrayed perfectly with fantastically detailed pixel art. While there are a few questionable choices made in the game’s overall design, anyone who is a fan of old-school 2D action platformers should definitely give this a try, alternatively, if you want to experience an over-the-top, horror-themed 17th-century Europe depicted in fantastic pixel art then Heidelberg 1693 is the game for you.

It’s a game that feels very demanding, but once you get the hang of it, it will feel rewarding to progress.

Heidelberg 1693 is a familiar game with a unique hook and dreary art style. I loved the time I spent with it and recommend anyone with some patience check it out. It will beat you down, but once you get into the groove it is hard to put down. Definitely one of the better indie games attempting to mimic that NES glory.

While it won’t be as iconic as its Castlevania or Ghouls 'n Ghosts influences, Heidelberg 1693 is sure to scratch that itch for those yearning for a similar title. Boss battles are large and the highlight of the experience, though infrequent between the random and challenging difficulty spikes.

The shooting mechanic, general combat and the look of Heidelberg 1693 are all pretty good, ensuring that it is all somewhat enjoyable. However, the lack of a dodge move and the weird jumping makes things a lot harder than they should be.
