    Play it once without the cheats, then flick a few on and go on a tour of Gynoug’s hellish spaces.

    Out of curiosity I went online to see what a physical cartridge copy of Gynoug and Wings of Wor are currently going for. Needless to say I was quite surprised, and the mere $6 CAD to play this digital version is a minor fraction of the cost to get a physical copy. I really enjoy finding old classics that I never got to play growing up, and I hope that the trend continues with weird and unique games like Gynoug.

    I love that Ratalaika games are reviving classics; it is like a dream come true for me as I missed a lot from that era. The latest game to get the rerelease treatment from Ratalaika is Gynoug, and don’t worry, I was thinking the same thing as you; I also never heard of the game before this week. But isn’t that the best part because it means I get to enjoy it for the first time.

    Gynoug is a Shump from the Mega Drive/Sega Genesis era, released in 1991 originally. Like any classic revival that comes out these days, Gynoug has all the quality-of-life updates that most of us can’t live without these days, me included. We all know the usual suspects, and lucky for us and me, because Gynoug is hard making that rewind feature almost essential here. Luckily, if players are finding this one too hard, they can add cheats straight away instead of having to finish the game beforehand. I won’t tell anyone if you need to use those cheats as it will be our secret.

    The features in this revival are the best of the best, allowing players to customise the game in the way they want to play it, and if you’ve experienced the game before, then these features will have a more significant impact on you. For me, I was like, oh, that’s pretty cool, but I didn’t really muck about with them much as I just wanted to jump in and start shooting things.

    If you are like me and shooting enemies in a hectic nature is your way to unwind after a long day, you will be happy to know that it doesn’t disappoint the shooting department. Gynoug includes six levels, each containing a sub-boss and a main boss for your killing pleasure. The enemies in Gynoug are grotesque and brilliantly designed, with most combining flesh and steel in a horrendous way that I couldn’t help but admire. Yeah, I know, I am weird.

    Gynoug is like most shumps that any fan of the genre has played, but where it differs from most is how unforgiving it can be, especially because I like to go right to the top or bottom of the screen, which in Gynoug’s case means instant death. Good thing there is a rewind feature in the game, or else I would not be finishing this game.

    Like most shumps, your enjoyment of the game depends on how much you enjoy the genre in the first place and whether you played this game in its original incarnation. Gynoug may be old, but aren’t old things cool again, making this an instant classic? Whatever your stance, I enjoyed this a good deal, not better than the Cotton games, but you know it is up there.
