Awesome! Possibly the best game I've played this year! I'm really glad I stuck with this series, the story was EPIC!
You still play a bit as JD in the beginning, but most of the game has you playing as Kait-which I wasn't sure of at first. She does really grow on you and Laura Bailey did a fantastic job with the voice acting.
Kait is trying to solve the mystery that was brought up at the end of Gears 4 and her potential connection to the Locusts. The environments are a lot more open (not quite open world) and it works really well the way they do it. You skate around on your skiff and stop at various main and side locations, with each detour providing either cool upgrades or story moments.
There is a bit of an RPG element in upgrading your trusty robot and abilities, but this is also handled in such a way that it doesn't distract from the things that make Gears a great series. The shooting is still amazing and you fight smart enemies with cool weapons all the way through.
There are also some really cool locations that the game takes you through. Not spoiling too much, but
there are always certain sequences in Gears games that could easily fit in to a horror game. You find yourself walking through creepy locales waiting for an ambush around every corner.
I rarely mention the graphics in reviews, but there were definitely a lot of times I had to stop and appreciate how amazing the game looked. The character models and places are probably better animated than any game in recent memory.
I also played the Hivebusters DLC, which was incredible as well! You're able to select from three characters, including one smart ass Scottish guy who stole the show for me. These three new characters are sent on a mission to destroy a large hive, even though it might be a suicide mission. The ending of the DLC still sticks with me as one of the coolest I can think of.
The ending of the main story is also incredibly epic, but I won't say much more. It's definitely worth sticking around for, though! Highly recommended!… Expand
